Working in partnership

to raise achievement for all.

Welcome to the February issue Here we are, we have broken what always feels to be the longest month of the year! The first signs of Spring are starting to pop up in the garden, thanks to the mild winter we have had and at home we are planning our adventures for 2020. We have agreed that we won’t be having any ‘big’ holidays this year as we need to spend time at home doing some DIY jobs and also enjoy what we have – we always seem to take time off work and be away, sometimes it’s nice to just be at home but without any pressure of what to do. We are hoping for some nice weather and a couple of camping breaks but I am most definitely a fair weather camper so will be booking those last minute! In this issue Laura shares with us her yummy seasonal recipes, we look at how to surprise your loved ones this valentines, how to treat your feet well and how to update your kitchen on a budget. And finally, we also discuss the importance of shopping local and supporting independent shops. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

News Support rescue dogs by training your own! Jerry Green Dog Rescue is encouraging you to add training your dog to your list of New Year’s resolutions. January has been National Train Your Dog Month which raises awareness about the

importance of proper training and healthy socialisation to a dog’s well-being. The month of January was chosen as many people receive puppies and dogs over the Christmas period and sadly many of them find themselves in rescues soon after. Shelley Wilks, the charities Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Training can make or break a dog’s chance to stay in a new home. Behaviour like constant barking and being destructive are just some of the issues new owners can struggle to control and manage and this ultimately can affect the bond between dog and owner. But we believe that with the right training and persistence, these behavioural issues can be resolved and a happy home life will soon follow. Not only does proper training and socialisation help your dog to become well mannered, it also creates a life-long bond between you both and is lots of fun! “We hope that the more people who are

educated on how to train their dog correctly will ultimately lead to less dogs coming into their rescue and rescues across the UK, which is one of our main goals as a charity.” If you would like some support with your training, their highly skilled Enterprise Trainers are here to help. They can give you the tools and skills you need to train and socialise your beloved furry friend correctly. Between them they have over 30 years of experience in variety of areas, if you are interested in any form of training please do get in touch. We have Nicki at our South Lincolnshire centre, who can be contacted on 07824 064242 or nicki. george@jerrygreendogs.org.uk All of the money raised from their training services will go towards the care and rehoming of their rescue dogs - so not only will you be helping your own dog, you’ll be helping those in their care find their forever homes too!

Speak up and help improve health and social care services in Lincolnshire Healthwatch Lincolnshire is calling on more people to share their views about health and social care as part of their campaign #SpeakUp2020. Last year more than 2000 people spoke directly to Healthwatch Lincolnshire about their experiences of health and care services. This feedback has been used to identify the most important issues in Lincolnshire. Healthwatch is currently working on areas such as

Stroke and Personal Health Budgets as well as listening to communities that don’t typically speak out. We want to hear more from patients and service users who are experiencing long waiting times for specialist appointments, those accessing social care and home care as well as your regular visits to GP’s, Pharmacies, Dentists and hospital services. To find out more, Healthwatch Lincolnshire has today launched

#SpeakUp2020, a campaign calling on people to share the changes they want to see to their local health and care services. By taking five minutes to speak up, people in Lincolnshire can improve care for themselves, their loved ones, and their community.

People can share the changes they want to see by getting in touch with Healthwatch Lincolnshire by phoning 01205 820 892, emailing info@healthwatchlincolnshire.co.uk or by completing our online form at www.healthwatchlincolnshire.co.uk/ have-your-say

Lincolnshire Co Op Fundraising for Local Wildlife Park

We’re fundraising for it alongside a number of other animal charities and sanctuaries through our Community Champions scheme. Its story began when founder Steve Nichols began helping parrot owners around his hometown of Sheffield. It struck him that not every owner could care for their parrots forever, and in 2003 opened a rescue and rehabilitation centre. It was the beginning of Lincolnshire Wildlife Park as you see it today. The National Parrot Sanctuary is one of the world’s largest parrot sanctuaries and is still the

backbone of the park. There’s also everything from meerkats, monkeys and lemurs to tapirs, tortoises and even reindeer Lexi and Boomer. And, a trip wouldn’t be complete without seeing the majestic tigers at specially built Bengal Gardens. Extra special rescues at the park include Nigel the puma (below) who suffers with an irreversible eye condition. Work has started on a sensory enclosure but funds are needed to finish it. “It will have everything he needs to ensure his life is fulfilling and happy,” Marketing Manager Sophie Hancox says.

“We desperately need to get Nigel into his new home before his sight goes, so that he can create an image of the enclosure to move around without difficulty.” With such a wide array of animals there’s always food and medical bills to think of, plus a need for more holding enclosures. Funds raised will go towards all of this. Did you know? In October 2019, colleagues from Lincolnshire Co-op spent the day volunteering at the wildlife park. They helped re-landscape some areas following flooding at the site earlier in 2019. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 5

Mini Police As our Mini Police program rolls into 2020, our Neighbourhood Policing Teams continue to meet and engage with thousands of primary school aged children across Lincolnshire on a regular basis. Since September, our PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) in South Boston have delivered key messages across 14 schools, helping to educate children and keep them safe. We have delivered messages around topics including Online Safety, Anti-Bullying, Antisocial behaviour and Scams. We have also covered Crime Scene Investigation, School Parking, Crime Prevention and our Social Responsibilty task. Each of these carries a different message and involves a different learning style to keep the children engaged. One example of how we keep the Mini Police program engaging is our Crime Scene Investigation task – our Mini Police (and in some schools whole classes) get to play detective. We stage a crime

scene within the school, leaving clues that Police officers find in crime scenes such as fingerprints, DNA (from blood, hair, skin cells etc) and footprints. Before our Mini Police can even examine the crime scene, we kit them out with protective equipment – forensic suits and gloves – and they are then tasked to identify anything that could be evidence. If they can identify anything, we challenge them to work out how they can practically recover that evidence from the crime scene and then we explain how the police use that evidence to identify suspects. Once we’ve gathered all the evidence, we look for suspects – we get the children to work out how we can use what is in our surroundings to identify suspects. If we are able to identify any (we usually do!)

then we have to think about what we would want to ask those suspects – our Mini Police write their own interview questions and then interview the suspects. It is up to them to work out ‘whodunit’. This session is great fun to be part of, but also helps to deliver learning about how the Police solve crimes, how forensics and science help to find evidence, and how using open questions (who, what, where, when, why and how) help to increase our knowledge base and put the pieces of the investigative puzzle together. Another topic we cover is Scams – we know that your average 9-11 year old isn’t likely to be a scam victim – mainly because they don’t have what the scammers want – money – but we know that primary school age children come into

contact with lots of adults – from parents and grandparents to family friends and others in their communities. We set out to teach the children what scams are, what types of scams there are, how to identify a scam and what to do if they think something is a scam or someone might be a victim of a scam. We do this with our Powerpoint presentation (written by ourselves in association with Friends Against Scams and adopted nationally by Trading Standards), and by using interactive games and challenges to encourage the children to apply their new-found knowledge. Our PCSOs then arrange and host engagements with their Mini Police to share the knowledge they have learnt within their local communities.

Haven High Academy AN INNOVATIVE new scheme has been launched by Boston’s Haven High Academy to help young cyclists stay safe on the area’s roads. The Safer Cycling Initiative, created by the academy’s Pupil Premium Co-ordinator Damien Daly, has a number of aims and phases - all centred around encouraging students to bike to school and stay safe while doing so. Mr Daly said: “All of the staff at Haven High Academy take the safety of our students extremely seriously, which also extends to their use of bicycles. “With the long dark winter nights we are experiencing at the moment we were keen to improve the visibility of our student cyclists to other road users. “In order to do this, the first phase of our Safer Cycling Initiative has involved all of the Year 7 students at our Tollfield Campus who cycle to school being given free front and back lights for their bikes via our in-school rewards shop.” More than 100 Year 7 students regularly bike to and from the academy’s Tollfield Road site, while Haven High’s main campus in Marian Road has over 200 cyclists. Mr Daly said: “Following the huge success of the start of this initiative at our Tollfield Campus, which was well supported by Head of Year Martyn Miles MBE, we will now also be rolling it out to all of the students who cycle to and from our Marian Road campus. “Staff at Haven High are very keen to encourage students to cycle to school, as not only does this support the Healthy Schools Initiative but it also means the children are helping to reduce the environmental impact of cars on their local area. “This is just phase one of a much larger initiative which will see Haven High spearheading the drive to help young people’s road safety in the local area.” Mr Daly added that the Safer Cycling Initiative forms part of a bigger plan, which has also been designed to integrate with the construction of a new cycle hub at the Marian Road campus. The hub will also facilitate Haven High’s future working relationships with external cycling agencies.

Welcome To David Hallgate Opticians Why Is An Eye Examination So Importan t? One in two cases of sight loss can be avoided. Your eye health is very important to us, and only by having the most advanced equipment can we provide early detection, monitoring and treatment of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetes. David Hallgate Opticians have invested in a Spectralis 4D eye scanner. Unlike colour retinal photographs our system helps us to look below the surface at each layer of the retina to create a high definition map, that provides us with such detailed and invaluable information. Prior to your sight test we will use the Spectralis 4D eye scanner. You will simply sit at the instrument and we will scan your eye using a light beam. The scan only takes a few seconds and you can blink normally. There is no discomfort and the camera will not touch your eye. One in two patients with glaucoma don’t know they have the disease. Glaucoma is a hereditary disease. 50% Of patients are unaware they have the condition. One in two patients with diabetes are unaware they have the disease. Diabeties is a serious disease that can cause sight loss. Early detection and treatment is so important to prevent this.

One in two sixty year olds have some form of cataract. Hundreds of thousands of cataract procedures are carried out every year. To get the best outcome its important to have a full eye health check beforehand. One in two cases of serious sight loss is caused by age related macular degeneration. AMD can affect simple activities like driving, and watching tv, as it can rob you of your central sight. Just another reason to book your eye examination. The scan and eye examination will take approximately 45 minuites. We are at 86-88 Wide Bargate, Boston near Gala Bingo and you can contact us on (01205) 310710 or through our website davidhallgateopticians.co.uk The website also provides information on all the services we provide including - NHS examinations - Single vision glasses from £50 and free for those with income help - Varifocals from £89 with a 3 month no quibble money back guarantee - Childrens’ glasses free - Standard retinal screening free - 3 Months interest free credit - Contact lenses from £8 a month

Surprise Your Loved One

this Valentines It is almost that time of year again, love it or loathe it; Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. If you want to do something special for your loved one, we have plenty of tricks for you to stuff up your sleeve. It is not all about spending a fortune, you can demonstrate someone your love in lots of different ways that they will really appreciate. We’ve put together a few suggestions to get your ideas flowing, take a look!

Breakfast In Bed It really is the little things that mean a lot, and what is better than breakfast in bed? This will put your partner in a great mood from the start of the day; they will definitely get out of the right side of the bed. Why not be creative and make heart shaped pancakes of fried eggs with using a special cutter. Check out your local discount

store for some cheap Valentine’s Day themed plates and glasses; they are guaranteed to put a smile on your lover’s face! Post It Notes Why not make a really romantic gesture that is sure to make your partner feel special by leaving sticky notes around the house. Write notes about your feelings and favorite things about your special person. Fill a page of sticky colourful notes with loads of romantic gestures and stick them in the fridge, wardrobe, on the walls, on the door handle. You can cut them in different shapes if you wish like a heart, circle, flower, etc. You’ve Been Framed The two of you probably have hundreds of couple photos taken and collected over the years. But where are they all, stored away on your desktop, Facebook or in the back of a shelf? They are probably just sitting around collecting dust. Well we reckon that it is time to do something about it. A framed photo can make such special gift for your significant other, or why not compile a photo album in chronological order of your time together? Another idea is printing different pictures of you together and forming a heart shape on the wall. We promise you that your partner’s heart will melt when

18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

they see all the thought and love that has gone into this gift. Whether you have been lovers since a school age, university or it is a newly sparked romance, it is always important to make that special effort on Valentine’s Day. If you have been with you partner for many years and have kids, it doesn’t mean you should feel less excited about this special day for lovers. Take a day off for yourselves – leave the kids in childcare for a day or with someone you trust and feel young again!

Health & Beauty

Put a Spring in Your Step Feet are often the foundation upon which our entire physical lives are based. Any activity that requires standing or squatting, such as walking, running, and cycling, requires your feet for stability and balance. Despite how important feet are, they are often neglected and ignored because they are so often hidden away under socks and shoes. Taking proper care of your feet will keep them looking clean, soft, and presentable, and it will also help ensure good foot health and overall health. The best way to take care of your feet includes keeping up good hygiene practices, eating right and taking care of your body, and addressing pain and medical issues that could cause problems. Keep your feet clean. Wash your feet every day with warm water and a mild cleanser. Even if you don’t shower each day, take a few minutes to wash your feet in a sink or tub. Avoid soaking your feet, however, as this can strip away natural oils. Washing your feet daily will keep your skin clean and bright, prevent odour, and can prevent corns, infections, ingrown toenails, and calluses. Exfoliate and scrub. For softer feet, remove dead skin cells and improve circulation by gently scrubbing your feet every day with a pumice stone. Focus especially on your heels and toes. Don’t scrub too hard, or this will promote a thick and protective layer of skin to grow. Keep your feet dry and your socks clean. After you wash your feet, swim, shower, or get your feet wet, thoroughly pat them dry with a clean towel. Be especially careful to dry the area in between your toes. Change your socks every day, and always put on clean socks after washing your feet. Socks and feet that are dry and clean are the best defence against foot odour. Moisturize daily. Keeping your feet moisturized will keep the skin soft and supple. After you wash and dry your feet, massage your favourite moisturizer into the skin before putting on clean socks. Don’t moisturise between your toes. If this area stays damp or wet, it can lead to fungal growth and infection. Take care of your nails. Cut your toenails regularly, but never too short. If your nails are too short, dirt and fungus can get in between the skin and nail and cause an infection. Clean under your nails with a nail brush, clean toothbrush, or a rubber or wooden manicure stick. Avoid ingrown nails by cutting your toenails straight, not at an angle or rounded at the edges. To smooth the edges down after trimming, use an emery board and file gently in one direction only.

20 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Nail polish is acceptable to use on healthy toenails once in a while, but don’t apply polish to unhealthy nails or to cover up discoloured nails— this could be a sign of infection and covering it with polish will prevent it from clearing up. Eating for Foot Health Consume plenty of calcium. Everybody knows that calcium helps to build strong bones, but many people don’t realize that osteoporosis, or bone loss, often shows up first in the feet. No matter your age, your body and feet need between 1,000 and 1,300 mg of calcium per day to stay strong and healthy. Good dietary sources of calcium include: • Dark green vegetables, such as kale, spinach, bok choi and broccoli • Edamame, soybeans, and white beans • Figs and oranges

• Sardines and salmon • Almonds Get enough vitamin D. V itamin D is another necessary daily nutrient, in part because it helps our bodies absorb the calcium we need for strong bones and healthy feet. On a daily basis, we need between 400 IU to 1,000 IU of vitamin D. The main source of vitamin D is sunlight, but there are also dietary sources, including: • Mushrooms • Fortified orange juice, almond milk, tofu, breakfast cereal, and oatmeal • Liver • Mackerel and canned tuna If you have any concerns regarding your feet talk to your GP or local Podiatrist or Chiropodist.

The Importance of

Keeping it Local As we hear the news that several prominent retail sites in the town look set to close we are looking at more empty shop fronts, loss of jobs and a sad town centre. We all want the speed and convenience of online shopping today but quite simply how do we expect the town centre shops to stay open if we are changing where we spend our money? We are not alone famous UK retail names that have vanished in the past couple of years include Toys R Us, Maplin and Poundworld. HMV is on the brink. The Centre for Retail Research reported that 43 retailers bit the dust in 2018, affecting 2,594 stores. So what’s the answers? How can you make a difference? The first thing to consider is where you spend your money, we have many national and also a great mix of independent shops on our high street which unless we support them they will not thrive and survive. National stores work on statistics and if a store isn’t performing it will be closed. Independents have more of an emotional approach but facts are facts and accountants reports are final; hard decisions have to be made but ultimately business owners have to close if they aren’t supported by the community. Why Supporting our Small Business is Supporting Our Community Small businesses create jobs. Many of the ‘new’ jobs that we are told have been created in the UK in recent years have been created by people who have taken the leap of faith to go self-employed, or

22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

start their own business and grow it so that they can employ others. Spending money with a small business keeps more money in your local economy. Research by local authorities in the UK has shown that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business, 63p stays in the local economy. This compares to 40p in every £1 spent with larger businesses. Small businesses will spend more of the money they earn locally, buying products and services from other small businesses, going out to eat and buying tickets for local sports events, the local cinema and local theatre shows. It’s a real win-win situation for our local businesses and communities, helping other businesses to thrive and safeguarding local jobs. Small independents add colour and variety to our towns and villages. It would be a boring shopping experience if every street had the same national chain stores. One great thing about the big High Street shopping names is that you know what to expect. They are successful because they are consistent when you go into a branch anywhere in the country. Of course they bring shoppers into town and they provide jobs. But it’s also great when you find a one-off shop, founded and run by people with a passion for what they do. Small business owners are at the forefront of innovation. Owners of independent businesses have the freedom, agility and flexibility to run things their way. They don’t have to go through long-

winded processes to get approval for new ideas and they can respond quickly to what their customers want. They know that by building up loyal, regular customers who shout about their business to others, their business will grow. They will listen to your feedback and ideas and that means you can have a bit of influence over what they sell. Small businesses care about their reputation. Businesses only enjoy longevity by delivering great customer service, quality products and services and value that keeps their customers coming back – and continually attracts new customers too. Shopping local is about the guarantees you have because you know the business owner and their standing in the local community. Small food businesses are often more environmentally friendly. When you shop at a local bakers, butchers, market or farm shop, it is likely that a high percentage of what’s on sale has had a relatively short journey from where it was first produced. So how does the high street of the future look like? Council planners across the country are having to think smart about what the high street offers. Where retail stores once stood they are being filled with services such as medical centres, children’s activity destinations, training centres to compliment the retailers and bring a purpose into bringing people into the town.

Kitchen Makeover on a Budget

If your kitchen dreams are bigger than your budget, try some of these ideas. You can scale down your project by doing less construction, trimming luxury materials, or rethinking the ingredients that make up traditional kitchen design. Let these ideas help you get a lovely kitchen for a little less money. Substitute Furniture Not every wall in the kitchen needs to be wrapped in cabinetry. Use furniture creatively to achieve an unfitted look on a budget. Create a pantry from an armoire or an island from an old table. Research Before You Buy Compare prices. Most big-item stores carry additional products online and will special order just about anything from top manufacturers at below list price. Refinish Your Cupboards If your cupboards are in good working condition, but you don’t like the style, refinishing them is the best way to get a new look for less. Homeowners with basic do-it-yourself skills can give them a fresh coat of paint. Or, send them out to a paint

shop for a factory-finish spray coat. Wallpaper The sky is the limit with wallpaper. Use them to dress up a wall, to apply to a cupboard door, or to line the back of an open cupboard. They deliver an instant style upgrade. Splurge Sensibly If your heart is set on a material, then splurge. But to keep costs in line, choose the material in a way that will make a big impact for less. Take marble, for example. Use it on a small island instead of all counter surfaces. Or shop for a marble tile to use as a backsplash. Paint Anything! Without a doubt, paint is the fastest way to a fresh look for the least amount of money. Use

it to freshen old wood floors, to remake tired cupboards, and to add a focal point wall to your kitchen. With careful prep work, you can even paint counters and backsplash tiles. Assemble Your Cupboards Flat-pack or ready-to-assemble cupboards reward homeowners who are willing to invest a little elbow grease with deep discounts. The cabinets come flat and unassembled. Each box needs to be built before it can be hung. Accents & Appliances Consider replacing sinks, lighting, and appliances as part of a total makeover. If these elements are more than 10 years old, they’re probably showing signs of wear and may not have some of the convenience, style, and operating features that today’s products offer. Eliminate Upper Cupboards If the budget is tight and you can do with less, install lower cupboards only for a significant cost savings. In place of upper cabinets, you can display art, hang a shelf or two, or create a feature wall.

Easy to Clean There are unlimited options for paint and wallcoverings to spruce up the walls -- just make sure that whatever you choose can be easily cleaned. There are also many kinds of window treatments, but for ease of installation and cleanup, keep the design uncomplicated.

Buying a Use

How much a used car will cost you will ultimately depend on what car you get. Yet there are plenty of ways you can reduce the final bill.

1. Year old cars are MUCH cheaper than new cars The average new car has a list price of around £28,500. But by the time it’s one year old with 10,000 miles on the clock it costs just £21,000 – a reduction of more than 27% in the first 12 months. In the second year the depreciation rate is likely to slow by roughly half (so the second year, this average car would lose around

£3,750 in value). So picking a year-old model will dramatically slash the upfront cost. There are exceptions if you’re picking a plush model. Brands that hold their value best tend to include Mercedes and Porsche - so you won’t see too many year old luxury car bargains out there. 2. Revealed: The cheapest cars to run To save you time and energy trying to work this out, car experts have already done this research. You can compare running costs of different

26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

models, including the ones you’re looking to buy, on several sites, including Parkers and What Car?. But, follow these rules to home in on the cheapest cars:

• Smaller engines can be cheaper. The choice of a 1.0-litre or a 2.0-litre engine isn’t just about pure horsepower. A large engine will usually burn more fuel than a smaller one. So engine size is a vital consideration if fuel economy is an important factor in your decision. Of course, this depends on how you use the car. A small engine is most

efficient when it’s used as intended, such as to pootle around town. If a small engine is used a high speed, it’ll need to work much harder to keep the car moving - burning more fuel. • Petrol cars tend to be cheaper than diesel. Diesel engines are often more economical than their petrol counterparts. But don’t be fooled into thinking this definitely makes diesel a better option. These cars are more expensive, and they usually cost more at the pump than petrol. • Manual cars are cheaper than automatic. Switching between gears is extra work - particularly to those

between one and 50, using research by the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre (Thatchem). This is based of a range of info including performance, safety features, price of a new model and cost of spare parts. The Hyundai i10, for example, is one of a handful of cars in group one, and thus is cheap to insure. Check the insurance group rating of the exact model you have in mind before buying at Thatcham Research.

ed Car of us prone to stalling at traffic lights. Yet while automatics take some of the hassle out of driving, they come with a higher price tag. • Hybrid cars are cheap to run, but cost more to buy. Technology is improving everyday with modern hybrids coming in all shapes and sizes, from superminis to luxury SUVs. Fuel-economy and cheap or even zero tax rates make part-electric models appealing, like the Toyota Prius. They also tend to hold their value for resale. But they usually cost more to buy – so weigh up the savings.

• Check CO2 emissions, as it affects the duty you pay. Buyers of the most polluting cars pay the most road tax. But choose a car (such as the emission-free hybrid Toyota Prius) that produces less than 100g of CO2/ km and you’ll pay nothing at all. • Smaller cars are cheaper to insure. If you’re looking to save money, you’ll want a car that’s cheap to cover. The cheapest to insure tend to have a lot in common, including size. Put simply, it’ll cost you more to insure a 4x4 than a small city runaround. Cars are placed in groups ranked

The best time to buy a used car Once you’ve decided what car to pick, now you need to know how to get the best deal. One way to slash costs is to buy at the right time. Dealers have targets to meet, with bonuses up for grabs. Typically, these are based on quarterly sales, making the end of March, June, September and December a good time to buy. They need to shift cars, so will be more willing to negotiate and offer attractive finance packages. But, if you’re buying from a private seller, there’s unlikely to be a good or bad time. Private sellers don’t have targets to meet, other than the price they want to achieve. If you’re buying this way, keep an eye on prices a few months before you actually buy - if they’re heading down, you may want to wait. Heading up, and it’s prudent to buy sooner. For a quiet time, try to avoid weekends, or the start of the month, just after payday. A dealership crammed with wannabe buyers isn’t a good place to bargain hard. If you’re buying privately, it’s also worth picking your time when other potential buyers might be away. This could be over Christmas, or deep into the summer holidays. Think about the style of car too. Summer is when drivers dream of buying convertibles, making winter a good time to haggle for a deal on one. ‘What car do I need?’ checklist Before you start browsing for the ‘one’, think about what you really NEED from a car. There’s no point buying a two-seater convertible if you’re about to start a family, so work out what’s realistic. Ask yourself: What are my essential requirements? Enough room for the family? A cheap car to run? A sporty number? Think about what you need... Do I need the car to do anything

specific? This could include towing a trailer or fitting into a small space. Is it for short city drives or longer motorway journeys? Does it need to be able to cruise at motorway speeds without straining? What’s better, petrol or diesel? The fuel you want to use can make a big difference in the model you might choose. Do I need a massive boot? Consider whether you need room for things such as sports equipment or a pushchair. Do I want to consider an ecofriendly car? If so, a hybrid or electric car could be an option. The cost more to start with but some come with Government grants. Need to flog your current car? Selling privately can net you 20% more than part-exchanging If you need to flog your current wheels, you’ve two options. You can either part-exchange the car at the dealership, where the dealer gives you a price and knocks it off the total cost of the car you’re buying. Or you can sell privately – where you list the car and get cash from the person who buys it. • Part-exchange. This can save a lot of hassle, but it’s highly unlikely to be MoneySaving. Yes, it stops you having to advertise the car or deal with potential buyers, but, and this is a big but, you also won’t get as much as selling privately. Remember, the dealer will pay less than your car’s value so it can move it along at a profit. So weigh up offers carefully. • Selling privately. This is more time consuming, but you’re likely to get more for the car, if you’re prepared to put the effort in. Options include classified listing on Gumtree (free), PistonHeads (30-day ad is £11.99), Autotrader* (one-week ad is free for cars under £1,000, while cars over £1,000 can be listed from £36.95) and Motors (12-week free ad). Other options include selling the car on eBay or Facebook. If you do decide to part-exchange, watch for dealers inflating the tradein price of your old car – making it look like you’re getting a good deal – but at the same time charging you more for the new model. Simply check how much cash you’ll hand over once you’ve swapped cars – that is the true cost of the deal. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 27

HOW WILL YOUR FENCE LOOK AFTER ANOTHER UK WINTER?

COLOURFENCE - no painting or repairs for 25 years!

Don’t wait until your timber fence breaks down. Prevention is better than cure!

We’ll be maintenance-free until 2044! †

The problem with traditional fencing is that it will break. And the moment it does, you have to deal with third party damage, security and privacy issues, neighbour’s concerns, quotes, the expense and inconvenience – all at once. How much simpler it would be to give Colourfence a call and head off all your problems for the next 25 years! The only fence not to warp, crack, shrink, rot or peel and withstand windspeeds up to 130mph. To see our great value, colours and designs call today.

To see our wide choice of sizes, mix and match colours and designs contact us today!

Despite many coats of preservative, the structure of the wooden fence in our front garden rotted, and a recent storm sent it off down the road, thankfully missing the neighbour’s car. However, every cloud has a silver lining, and we couldn’t be more pleased with our new ColourFence. It looks great, and we are looking forward to years of summers with no fence paint or algae treatments.
