to raise achievement for all.
Welcome to the October issue
September can sometimes feel like a cruel month, the children go back to school and then the weather is glorious. We certainly have enjoyed an Indian Summer. As a family we are not in the swing of school runs and homework, I’m not sure if it feel like the new normal quite yet but I know I am already looking forward to half term. Back to this months’ magazine – we offer advice on eating out with children, there are dogs from Jerry Green Rescue looking for homes on page 14….could you find your new best friend? If you have recently got engaged or are planning winter wedding, make sure you check out our wedding feature and see how much you can save, just by switching seasons. And finally Tim test drives the VW Arteon. Well, for now, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the last few warm days and see you next month!

No Step Too Far For Volunteers Dedicated volunteers have won awards for going above and beyond while encouraging people to stay healthy by joining local health walks. There are more than 60 regular volunteer-run health walks across Lincolnshire’s seven districts, which all come under the national Ramblers Walking for Health scheme. During a recent celebration event at Woodland Waters in Ancaster, eight of the hard-working volunteers who help lead health walks were recognised with honours. Lincolnshire Co-op supports health walks in Lincoln, South Kesteven and East Lindsey alongside other agencies such as Greenwich Leisure and 1Life. They help bring together a network of walks across the whole county. Health walks can benefit people in lots of ways. As well as improving people’s physical wellbeing, walkers can meet others and enjoy their local
area, enhancing their mental health. Walk lasts between 30 and 90 minutes and take place on a regular basis. Groups cater for different abilities so everyone can enjoy walks at their own pace. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Chief Executive Ursula Lidbetter said: “It’s inspiring to meet our volunteer walk leaders and we’re immensely proud of them. We want to say thank you for their dedication and enthusiasm in leading groups and supporting others. “Winners were put forward by fellow volunteer leaders and walkers and we were impressed with some of the nominations that came in. Amongst many attributes, they were praised for their commitment, friendliness, encouragement and endless kindness.” To find a walk near you and more information, visit www.lincolnshire. coop/healthwalks

LIVES receives £23,000 grant from BNA for lifesaving equipment
Lincolnshire charity LIVES is delighted to have received a grant from the BNA Charitable Incorporated Organisation to support volunteer medic responders in Lincolnshire. The grant of £23,000 was awarded to LIVES earlier this month and will fund advanced monitoring equipment to support the advanced care delivered by LIVES medic responders who attend the most seriously ill and injured patients in the community. Carl Keeble, Head of Operations at LIVES, said: “LIVES would like to thank the BNA for this extremely important funding, which will allow us to provide two of our advanced skills medics with the equipment to extend the range of clinical interventions we can provide to critically unwell and injured patients across
Lincolnshire.” Paul Simpson, a BNA Trustee, said: “LIVES provides a service in Lincolnshire that is so important for the community. The volunteer medics and responders are often first on the scene for a wide range of medical emergencies including heart attacks, strokes and road traffic collisions. Myself and the other trustees of BNA Charitable Incorporated Organisation want to support LIVES by providing the funding required for new equipment that really can make a difference and save lives.” LIVES currently has over 60 volunteer medics, ranging from trained nurses, paramedics and doctors who work alongside and support the charity’s 700 Community First Responders in Lincolnshire.

New team to tackle on-street litter A new team of enforcement officers have taken to the streets of Boston this month in a bid to tackle people who deliberately drop litter, who don’t clean up after their dog and those who fly-tip instead of taking a trip to the tip. These new officers began patrolling areas of Boston at the beginning of this month and have been issuing fines daily. Anyone they spot either dropping litter, urinating, spitting, fails to pick up after their dog or fails to be able to provide the
means to pick up after their dog will receive an immediate £150 fixed penalty notice. Anyone who does not discharge their responsibility by paying the fine will be taken to court and prosecuted. As well as dog excrement, litter and fly tipping, the team have also been given the powers to deal with other problems such as graffiti, fly-posting, exposing vehicles for sale on the highway, repairing vehicles on the highway, abandoned vehicles, failure to
produce a waste transfer note, failure to produce a waste carrier licence and Duty of Care. Some of their work will be carried out using information passed to us by members of the public and local councillors. It is hoped that because of our zero tolerance approach people will decide to dispose of their rubbish more responsibly and this will help keep Boston much cleaner and improve the overall look of the town and surrounding areas
Portfolio holder for environmental services, which includes street cleaning, Cllr Yvonne Stevens, said: “”Littering and fly-tipping are two of the most regular complaints we receive from the public. Residents have had enough of those people who don’t care about the effects their behaviour has on their neighbours or the environment. “The enforcement team will do everything in their power to stop this and help make the streets of Boston much cleaner.” www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 5

Hello I’m Paul Skinner, Boston Borough Council’s cabinet member responsible for the regulatory portfolio. This year since May a number of additional responsibilities have been added. Climate change is one such item, extremely topical politically and according to the Mori Polls in the minds of a high number of the population (85%). Climate change is a neverending, natural process and has been happening since the formation of the atmosphere around the early earth. However, we’ve experienced record temperatures this summer, as well as floods and storms. The proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher than at any point for 400,000 years, and going up fast. Climate change threatens life as we know it, the encouraging news is that the people of this country recognise the crisis for what it is, we are remarkably united on the fact, and we want action in response. I was delighted this week to attend and

support a working group set up by the council to look at how we can do as much as we can to reduce our carbon footprint to ZERO. Many councils have already declared climate emergencies as a symbolic commitment to do something to address the biggest challenge the world has faced in 100s of years. What is different in our approach is a desire across the council to have a meaningful and realistic plan with actions that can measure our progress. As council we have already reduced our carbon emissions by 49% since 2008 but we want to do more. We want to ensure that we not only lead from the front by demonstrating and practicing excellent environmental initiatives but we do it in a way which encourages others to do their bit. We will be moving away from single use plastics, we will be using renewable energy sources, we will be rolling out EV charging points across our car parks, we will be reducing our vehicle and building emissions and much more but we cannot do this alone. Every business, every organisation, every individual
can do a little which can achieve a lot. Boston Borough Council CCTV has now been upgraded to an Open Source system, this enables us to purchase better performance cameras at more competitive rates while giving other operational benefit’s, our staff and services being called upon by a number of partners including Lincolnshire Police, East Lindsey District Council and South Holland District Council. Anti-social behaviour and evidence packages requested have decreased suggesting a drop in both crime and anti-social behaviour. I applaud both our staff and those in our partnerships efforts in achieving those figures, but I can reassure the public that we strive constantly to build upon our knowledge and methods to improve further. Our licensing services continue to perform well, this is quasi-judicial and the choices made by committee and officers are down defined paths. The building regulations department continues delivering a professional service that competes well with commercial services in the area. Health and Wellbeing continues to work well to raise the importance of all taking responsibility for ourselves. The area has improved against other areas of the UK showing real progress. We are working with the other district councils sharing best practice while tailoring the approach to the needs in our area. An example is gaining Central Government funding to support the government’s strategy to eradicate rough sleeping by 2027. This will not happen overnight but we are putting together a wider rough sleeping team to support those vulnerable members of our community. This will include on the ground street support, opportunities for intensive and focused support, e.g. for mental health and substance misuse, as well as working with rough sleepers to increase their confidence in dealing with securing and maintaining longer lasting tenancies and accommodation.

Mini Police
The Mini Police program is now back in full swing after the summer break. The team have packaged and dispatched hundreds of new uniforms, notebooks, lanyards and contracts ready for the coming year. Since the new term began, PCSOs have been visiting our Mini Police schools and introducing the Mini Police program to the Year 5 pupils. It is quite an exciting time for them, as unlike last year, they have a little bit more of an idea about what the Mini Police program is all about – they have seen Mini Police in their schools and on their playgrounds, as well as out
in the local community. This has led to greater interest and more applicants for the program. PCSOs have been hearing all about what each child believes is important about being in the role, not only to themselves but to making a positive difference to their school. We have heard from children who pledge to make their fellow pupils aware of issues that not only affect them, but those around them, such as scams. We have heard from pupils who want to stamp out bullying, who want to challenge stereotypes and those who want to make our roads safer by educating motorists about excess speed.
We look forward to following their journey through the program. We would love to take on every single applicant to the role, but as we unfortunately can’t, our PCSOs and teachers will be working hard to ensure that pupils are elected fairly and democratically, meaning that anyone who feels inspired to stand up and want to be considered can be. The Mini Police program provides a platform for its participants to share important topics to fellow pupils and the wider community. It also encourages the children on the program to reflect on their own characters, to uphold high
standards and to inspire others to do the same. We are, after all, asking them to act as our ambassadors, sometimes in the public arena. We ask our recruits to uphold high school attendance, good behaviour and to encourage and promote respect amongst pupils. We also ask them to share these values and ethics through the topics they undertake both in and out of school, as they are great qualities to continue with through the school journey. We look forward to sharing some pictures of our new recruits next month once uniforms are issued and the children are settled into the role and working on their first tasks.

Adult Book Choice Elevator Pitch by Linwood Barclay It all begins on a Monday, when four people board an elevator in a Manhattan office tower. Each presses a button for their floor, but the elevator proceeds, non-stop, to the top. Once there, it stops for a few seconds, and then plummets right to the bottom of the shaft. It appears to be a horrific, random tragedy. But then, on Tuesday, it happens again, in a different Manhattan skyscraper. Who is behind this? Two seasoned New York detectives and a straight-shooting journalist must race against time to find the answers . . .

Where to go? Well, tried and tested is always a good idea. You know the menu, the people, the place and you know your kids will love it. Carvery style means minimum waiting, and restaurants with indoor games areas and mini soft plays are often a winner. Some restaurants have outdoor play equipment that is so amazing you may want to have your tea there as well as your lunch! Most places serving food are pleased to welcome children, and offer dedicated kids’ menus and activities for them to enjoy at the table. Children of all ages can make the most of a buffet style meal. Chinese, Indian, even pie buffets, for example, are perfect for trying a bit of this and a bit of that, and discovering new foods your youngsters like. Wherever you go, do ring ahead to book. You can request high chairs, a quiet table in the corner, or make the restaurant aware of any other requirements in plenty of time. You can also check your chosen place to eat definitely has a table available at your preferred time. The last thing you want is to turn up for dinner to be told they are full. Having to find somewhere to eat with hangry children, if plan A fails, is rarely easy. We probably don’t need to tell you to bring oodles of things to keep your youngsters occupied.
Colouring books, stickers, pens, paper, magazines, readers, bears, dolls, tablets. Bring them all!!! Your kids may be content to join in with the chatter, and be so happy eating, you may not even need them. A newborn baby may well sleep all the way through your meal, but it could be worth ordering something you can eat with one hand in case your dinky diner wakes up, and you are called for feeding duty. If you are in the middle of the toddler years, when your baby is at the restaurant for a good time, not a long time, and prefers exploring to eating, take heart. In a few short years, they will be nine, insisting they eat from the adult menu, and still have their eyes on your pudding after they’ve demolished their own. Do have a little tidy around the floor and table before you leave. No one can help dropping the odd chip, but baby-led weaning size chunks of veg are best picked up. Finally, don’t be nervous about taking your little gnawers out for lunch. Your servers will be well used to welcoming families, and many of your fellow diners will have children of their own, so there’s pretty much nothing your motley crew can do that they haven’t experienced before. People are always happy to help. Bon appetit!

Winter
Weddings
Have you considered a winter wedding? Winter weddings have a lot going for them. Yes, summer weddings sure are stunning but there are some downsides to consider. Sweltering heat could make a hot mess of a bride’s wedding hairstyle and make melting away. And with a hectic diary packed with other summertime nuptials, some guests might be forced to RSVP ‘no’ to your warm-weathered bash. But with a winter wedding, you can avoid all that and get stunning snowy wedding photos, holiday-themed wedding decorations, and more. Less Stress Winter weddings generally offer a lack of stress about the elements since they typically take place inside. The risk of rain and wind can make the planning period extremely stressful and potentially costly if you need to add a tent. Guests are frequently exposed to heat and cold in all outdoor weddings and they can be very uncomfortable. Taking Mother Nature out of the equation means less stress for you, your vendors, your guests and your family.” More Venue Dates & Better Rates Most locations and vendors book up quickly during the summer months at a high rate, whereas those same locations and vendors are available for a lower price during the colder months. Because the winter months aren’t as busy as others, they’ll also be able to focus more of their attention on your big day
You’ll have more flexibility to come in and set up early or break down late, as there’s likely not another event right after yours that the venue needs to prep for right away.” Bonus (and Free!) Decorations Although the time of year might not be the reason you chose a winter wedding, there are many benefits to a celebration aligned with the holidays. Most venues you select will most likely be decorated for the holiday season adding a more celebratory feel to your special day.” And, at no cost to you! Cheaper Travel and Accommodations Travel and hotel stays are at peak pricing in the summer, when school is out and families take their holidays. Winter weddings allow guests to take advantage off-season pricing for their travel and accommodation options. This

is a win-win for everyone, we think! It’s Something Out of the Ordinary Simply it’s something different! From colour choices to flowers and décor, there are elements of the season to inspire your theme that will stand out in a sea of peonies.” If your style is romantic, trying shades of winter white and lots of greenery, and if you’re going for a rustic-cozy vibe, use lots of wood and deep hues. Embrace the season by throwing blankets over guests’ chairs or keep them warm by serving a hot signature cocktail. It’s the Best Time for Black Tie If you’re planning a formal wedding, you can bet you’ll hear much less complaining from your guests in black tie attire when it’s cold outside. Tuxedos weren’t meant for outdoor ceremonies and cocktail hours in the heat of the summer, however, they are the perfect choice for indoor winter weddings, as are gowns covered in sequins. You Won’t Be a Hot Mess Some people seriously don’t deal well in the heat. It makes them irritated and not to mention a sweaty mess. You can always add layers to combat the cold, but in the hotter months, well, you can’t exactly take off your clothes. “If you’re stressed about being hot and sweaty for your wedding photos, than a winter wedding is perfect for you! Stunning Snowy Wedding Photos If you’re blessed with a sprinkling of snow ahead of your big day, you can snap some stunning snowy wedding photos that’ll revival any sun-drenched summer snapshot.

Planning a Funeral of a Loved One Most funerals are arranged by the nearest relatives and if not by a close friend. If there is no one, the local or health authority will arrange a simple funeral. The person may have left instructions about the type of funeral and burial they wanted. There is no legal obligation for these instructions to be followed, but they usually are. Read about how funerals are arranged, what services you can expect to get from a funeral director and how to get help with paying. How funerals are arranged Most funerals are arranged through a funeral director. Find
one who belongs to one of the professional associations, such as the National Association of Funeral Directors - NAFD or the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors – SAIF. These associations have codes of practice and complaints procedures. Some local authorities also run their own funeral services by arrangement with a local firm of funeral directors. Arranging a funeral without a funeral director You can arrange a funeral without a funeral director. If you want to do this, the Natural Death Centre or Cemeteries and Crematorium department of your local authority
can offer help and guidance. Dealing with funeral costs If you arrange the funeral with a funeral director, you’re responsible for the costs. You should ask to see a price list before choosing a funeral, or explain how much you have to spend and see what services are possible. Getting a written estimate Once you’ve chosen the funeral, you should be given a written estimate giving a breakdown of all of the costs involved. Ask for one if it’s not provided. If you want to compare costs, you can contact other funeral directors,
or ask someone else to help you with this. Services provided by funeral directors A basic funeral is likely to include: • a plain, lined coffin • transport of the body of the person who has died to the funeral director’s premises, usually up to ten miles from wherever the death occurred • the care of the person who has died until the funeral. This will include washing and dressing the person who has died and laying the body out, but will not include embalming

No one wants to have to arrange a funeral at what is already a difficult time. If you do, having an understanding of what is involved and how to deal with problems will help. • fees for religious services • a burial or crematorium fee. The burial fee will usually include the costs of preparing the grave • extra cars • embalming • extra services by the funeral director, for example, use of the Chapel of Rest, transport from the mortuary, or special viewing arrangements • the cost of journeys of more than ten miles to the funeral director’s premises • a memorial • catering arrangements Signing a contract You may need to sign a contract
with the funeral director. Make sure you read it carefully and ask the funeral director about anything you don’t understand. Paying for the funeral Some funeral directors might ask for a deposit before making the funeral arrangements. You may be offered a discount to pay for the funeral before or soon after it takes place. If you know the money will be released at a later date to cover the cost, you might want to consider a bank loan or overdraft to pay early.
Money may be released later, if the person who has died made arrangements to pay for their funeral through an insurance or other policy, or if money is released after their estate has been dealt with. If there is a legal claim for negligence against someone for the death, the cost of the funeral can be claimed as compensation. Otherwise, you may agree payment by instalment, or pay after the legal process of dealing with the person’s estate has been settled.

Advice Worth Hearing!
Y
ou probablyhave regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life.

get Ready For Winter With the great British winter fast approaching, now is the time to make sure your roof is in tip top condition to protect you from the elements! Give your roof and driveway a new lease of life, call the experts in and relax, knowing you will be all warm and cosy in your home this winter! Driveways Block paving and other surfaces covered with algae, moss and weeds can be unsightly and slippery. Trip hazards can be avoided and the area can soon look great again with all organic matter removed and any joints re-sanded. Roofs
Moss acts like a sponge, absorbing large amounts of moisture and resulting in your roof being constantly wet. If this moisture travels underneath the tiles, it could rot the wooden components of the roof, threatening structural integrity and leading to costly repairs. Moss can break off or be disturbed by birds looking for insects and fall into gutters or downpipes, blocking your drainage system. If this issue is not spotted, it could potentially lead to parts of your roof or drainage system requiring costly replacement. Cleaning and maintaining these areas can make a dramatic difference to the look and feel of your home. This is where the Moss Man can help. We use manufacturer recommended techniques to remove and kill moss to give your property a fresh look. Once the initial work is completed, we can use our own brand biocide to suppress future growth and keep your property clean with regular maintenance

Keep Warm this Winter Heating homes accounts for over 70% of household energy consumption. So reducing this figure – while keeping homes warm enough – not only cuts energy bills, but helps meet the carbon reduction commitments that the UK government is legally required to deliver. The most recent figures show that 2.38m households in the UK are in fuel poverty – which basically means that almost 11% of British homes cannot afford to keep warm. But while the scale of this problem is significant, not all the solutions need to be complex and costly. So here are 10 simple tips for keeping your home warm for little or no extra cost – just in time for that severe weather warning. 1. Use your curtains Heat from the sun is free so make the most of it. Open your curtains and let the sunlight in during the day to make use of this free heat. When it gets dark, shut your curtains, which act as another layer of insulation and keep warmth in your rooms. You should also make sure you don’t have any leaks or gaps so that the warm air can stay in and the cold air stays out – this also helps to reduce condensation. 2. Use timers on your central heating The Centre for Sustainable Energy advises that programming your boiler to turn the heating on a little earlier – such as 30 minutes before you get up in the morning – but at a lower temperature is cheaper than turning it on just as you need it at a higher temperature. This is because a boiler heats up at a constant speed whether you set your thermostat to 20°C or 30°C. But don’t make the mistake of leaving your heating on low all day – because then you’re just paying for heat when you don’t need it.
worth seeing what’s going on in your walls, as around a third of the heat in an uninsulated home is lost this way. Although it’s not as cheap to install as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation could save up to £160 a year in heating bills. It’s also worth checking with your energy supplier to see if they have any insulation schemes running – which can sometimes mean cheap or free installation. 5. Wrap up warm If you have a hot water tank, make sure it is properly lagged – or insulated. This will keep the water warmer for longer, and reduce heating costs. The Energy Community reckons that insulating an uninsulated water tank could save up to £150 a year – but even just upgrading your tank’s “old jacket” will help to save money. 6. Turn down the dial This may seem a little counter-intuitive, but bear with me. The World Health Organisation previously recommended a minimum temperature of 21°C in the living room, but Public Health England revised this to 18°C in 2014. And research shows that turning your thermostat down by 1°C could cut your heating bill by up to 10%. So keep the dial at 18°C, save money and avoid the negative impacts of a cold home . 7. Block out the draughts Even a simple solution such as a making your own sausage dog draught excluder will help keep the warmth in your home. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that DIY draught-proofing your doors, windows and cracks in the floor could save £25 per year. You can do this yourself for very little cost. Selfadhesive rubber seals around doors and windows and door draught excluders are relatively cheap and easy to install. So it’s worth getting those doors and windows sealed before winter properly kicks in. 8. Install thermostatic radiator valves Research at the University of Salford has shown that installing heating controls and theromostatic radiator valves results in energy savings of 40% compared to a house with no controls. These work by allowing you to programme your heating to come on at predefined times – so you only use energy when you need it. New smart thermostats can also be controlled remotely via your mobile so you can turn on your heating on the way home, ensuring it’s nice and toasty when you arrive.
3. Move your sofa It might feel great to have your favourite seat in front of the radiator, but it’s absorbing heat that could be warming your home. By moving it away from the radiator, hot air can circulate freely. The same goes for your curtains or drying clothes – keep them away from the radiator so that you can get the most out of your heat source. 4. Maximise your insulation When it comes to heat, around 25% is lost through the roof. This can be easily reduced by installing 25cm of insulation throughout your loft. It’s also

9. Upgrade your boiler If your boiler is more than 10 years old, it may be time to replace it with a new, more efficient model. Depending on your old boiler type and house, you could save up to £350 with a new A-rated condensing boiler – which uses less energy to produce the same amount of heat. Plus, if it’s new, you’re less likely to have any issues going into the winter season. 10. Reflect the heat Radiator panels are relatively cheap, easy to install, and ensure that heat from your radiators warms up your room and not your walls. They work by reflecting the heat back into the room.

Volkswagen VW Arteon Volkswagen’s Arteon is a roomy coupe that chucks in some style to boost the VW Passat’s family-friendly formula. The Arteon’s large grille makes sure it sticks out from other coupes, but the well-built cabin isn’t quite as striking. The digital instruments are cool, but most of the interior has been appropriated from the more conservative, and cheaper, Passat. The space inside the VW Arteon is fantastic though, and the seats very comfortable. The car will seat a family-of-five – with rear seat passengers getting masses of legroom. The boot is enormous, too. Everyone’s luggage will fit in there – no problem. One of the best powertrains for the model is the 2.0-litre 150ps diesel mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. It packs enough punch and
is economical – achieving up to 50.4mpg. On the road, the German coupe soaks up potholes well, particularly when you move the optional adaptable suspension into ‘comfort’ setting. There is also a stack of technology to keep you out of harm’s way. For instance, the car comes with adaptive cruise control; there’s also gadgetry that will automatically pull over and stop the Arteon if it senses you’ve dropped off at the wheel. No surprise then that this Volkswagen achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating during crash testing. So, not only is the Volkswagen Arteon a goodlooking and practical coupe, but it is also a car well matched to family motoring.
