These are non-instructional sessions that allow potters to use The Centre’s Clay Studio to work on their own projects and practice skills both on the wheel and handbuilding. Complete personalized projects and steer your own ceramics journey! Clay must be purchased separately through The Centre Box Office.

Only work produced at Chilliwack Cultural Centre from clay purchased at The Centre Box Office can be fired in The Centre’s kilns. These sessions are not designed to accommodate production potters but to allow students to independently develop their skills. Drop-in work will be glazed during a scheduled drop-in glazing session.

CLAY CREATORS: HANDBUILDING Saturdays (8 sessions) January 30 - March 26, 2016 April 30 - June 25, 2016

Explore the medium of clay and create a range of functional and beautiful items by hand! From plates and mugs to ornaments and jewellery, handbuilding opens up a whole world of ceramic possibilities. This is an eight week course, with seven sessions of handbuilding and one of glazing – with one week break between sessions seven and eight to allow for proper drying prior to firing.

Be taken through the entire process of wheel throwing, from creating on the wheel through to the finishing of work through glazing and firing - you’ll be amazed at what you can create! This class will run for eight sessions – seven weeks of wheel work and a final session of glazing. There will be a one week break between sessions seven and eight to allow for proper drying prior to firing.

In three sessions over three weeks, students will be introduced to ceramics and learn about all the stages of creating objects in clay in this class. Students will create objects in wet clay, work with dry and bisque clay, and also touch on glazing and surface techniques in the perfect introduction to ceramics! After completion students are able to work on projects in The Centre’s self-directed Clay Open Studio.

TIPS & TECHNIQUES FOR WHEEL THROWN POTTERY

This class is intended for Intermediate Adult students with prior experience in centering and throwing a cylinder on the wheel. Students will have the rare opportunity to learn how to develop their wheel throwing experience and expand the visual appeal of their ceramics under the guidance of two seasoned potters! This class will include demos, critiques, and discussions on form & function as well as more advanced surface decoration and glazing techniques.

This self-directed class provides students with the opportunity to sculpt a human figure, with one individual model presenting one pose over four three-hour sessions. This format allows potters to fully explore the contours and essence of the body in an in-depth manner, and encourages the development of sculpting skills while enjoying the unique opportunity to produce large-scale work.

The Glass Open Studio allows students to hone their glass-bead making skills in a non-instructional, self-paced environment. Only students that have completed The Centre’s Glass Bead-Making Class are able to participate in the Glass Open Studio. Work stations, and safety equipment, and glass rods can be purchased from The Centre Box Office.

Using a torch and glass rods, students will learn the ancient art of Flameworking to make Glass Beads in this class taught by professional jewellery-maker Alicia Champ. The class will experiment with using stringers, frits, and dots, and discuss glass alchemy, studio set-up and safety to provide students with the perfect introduction to an infectiously addictive art form!

This workshop will teach students the basics of making glass dots – one of the foundational skills of design work in glass beads. Techniques in layering, twisting, plunging and in giving glass dots a rainbow effect will be covered in a three hour workshop that explores the huge possibilities that a tiny glass dot offers, and offers an especially fun way to explore creativity!

In this wire-focused class students will tackle various techniques in wirework and learn how to make jump rings, head and eye pins, ear wires, bead dangles and spiral charms. By the completion of the class students will be able to construct a necklace, bracelet, and earrings from start to finish with nothing but wire, hand tools, and decorative glass beads.

Students will explore the possibilities of wirework more in this class, building on the skills of the introductory course. Working with textures, hammering, shaping wire and making individual beads and connectors, as well as more advanced finishing techniques with patinas, students will learn the trips and tricks that make mastering this unique art form easier – and even more fun!

GLASS FLOWERS Sunday, March 6, 2016

With Glass Flowers Alicia will show students how to elaborate on the skills learned in the dot workshop, demonstrating how to layer, plunge, and create incredible floral designs in glass. Students will learn how to create the raised flora, encased, and plunged water florals as well as flower beads, as well as explore different colouring techniques to bring flowers to life in glass - adding a whole new dimension to home-made jewellery!

Students that have completed Glass Beads 1 will learn to develop their skills and technique in this advanced Glass Bead Making class. Students will explore how they can use moulds to create a range of different shaped beads, as well as experiment with encasing to produce items with multiple levels of depth, colour, and form, and build their Glass Bead Making abilities to the next level - and take another step towards Glass Bead mastery!

WIRE WEAVING

In this three hour workshop that explores three different methods of wire weaving, students will release their creativity even further! Suitable for both beginners and those that have prior experience in wire weaving, this fun workshop offers an opportunity to dive into the world of creating jewellery with wire. Students will complete a pendant that can be added to a chain to make a one of a kind necklace.

Explore the art of enamelling and learn how to create vibrant and unique jewellery by fusing glass to metal! Students will use a torch set-up and a kiln to create beautiful pendants, connectors for bracelets, earrings, and more. Over four sessions students will learn to enamel sheet metal and wire washers, opening up a world of how to create one-of-a-kind necklace, bracelet and earring sets.

CRAFTING JEWELLERY

This four week course will take students through the basics steps of making their own jewellery – from bead stringing and designing beaded jewellery through to making their own jump rings, headpins, and clasps. Students will expand on the skills they learn in the first session throughout the course, with the aim to be able to easily create a range of jewellery by the last session - expect to never buy jewellery again!

Students of all skill levels will be able to begin making their own chainmail jewellery using the knowledge learned in this workshop. Alicia Champ will discuss the different types of wire, metal, and tools that can be used to craft unique jewellery, as well as how to make and measure wire rings. These basics all come together in a one-of-a-kind bracelet created in class for students to take home - an amazing memory and skill all rolled into one!

The ability to draw the human figure is an essential art form, and vital to those who wish to develop strong observational drawing skills. This Open Studio provides artists with the opportunity to observe and draw a posed human form. No formal instruction is provided, but guidance and support is given. Both male and female models of varying body shapes are booked for the Open Studio.

Discover the uses of light and shade in drawing with this class. A series of fun exercises will lead students on a process of developing their ability to see light and incorporate it into their drawings, as well as explore contour lines, solid three dimensional shapes, and shading in the creation of form. Learn an exciting array of new techniques in watercolour, including applying washes, wet on wet techniques, pouring, glazing, and masking. Whatever your preferred medium or handicraft, this Open Studio is the perfect place to grab some you-time and work on a project! This noninstructional weekly handicraft session provides artists with a casual and relaxed space to get together and work on personal projects. From yarn working to knitting, cross stitch and embroidery, the all will be enjoyed in the Handicraft Open Studio. No supplies are provided, but The Centre’s Red Chair Lounge and the time and space to meet like-minded artists offers a delightful atmosphere in which to create.

In this introduction to papercrafts, students will learn the tools and techniques of cardmaking, stamping, traditional die cutting, paper punching, embossing, inks and papers, providing a complete introduction to producing their own personalized gift cards and crafts. Students will also have three free drop-ins for The Centre’s newly re-opened Papercraft Open Studio, a self-directed weekly session where projects and creations can be worked on at the Centre, using familiar tools and supplies - and create cards everybody will love!

A fun way to learn papercrafts skills, this class will introduce students to the beginner’s approach to scrapbooking and journaling. Creative layouts based on individualized themes and events will be covered, such as the first days of school, travels abroad, birthdays, and many more, teaching students the very best ways to depict their stories through visual and textual media. Students will also have three free drop-ins for our newly re-opened Papercraft Open Studio, a self-directed weekly session where projects and creations can be worked on at The Centre, using familiar tools and supplies.

Chilliwack photographer Vickie Legere will guide aspiring photographers on demystifying their cameras with this workshop! Through a mixture of seminar and practical techniques, students will explore the different basic photography methods of DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras. Students will need to bring their own camera, as well as tools for taking notes.

PEOPLE IN MOTION: BALLET JORGEN

This workshop will offer students the unique opportunity to photograph professional performers in action. Ballet Jorgen (who will be performing Sleeping Beauty at The Centre on this date), will act as subjects while students learn how to capture movements in an indoor environment. Students will need their own camera and ideally a tripod, and are also welcome to bring flash equipment.

This workshop will give students insight into the techniques that will enable them to take beautiful close up shots, using flowers as the subject of focus. Students that sign up for the Art Safari will be taught how to develop their drawing abilities as they take inspiration to draw various objects and creatures. Kids will be introduced to the exciting world of illustration, storytelling, and comic book construction in this class! The basic techniques of composition and drawing will be covered, including anatomy, perspective, and foreshortening. STOP MOTION (7-10)

Stop-Motion offers an exciting insight into how kids can work with figurines and animation to create their own movies! In this class students will be able to bring their own toys and learn how to create a story, use still cameras, and discover how to use four different computer programs to produce a short film. The best videos will be shown at a public screening at the class finale.

THEATRE PEEPS (6-12)
