Northwest Kidney Centers (NKC) has long history providing dialysis treatment in Pacific northwest area. The Rainier Beach clinic will be one of their pioneer project to innovate a new type of dialysis clinic with untypical layout, to provide and balance the best medical practice and patient experience. Multiple approaches have been taken into design process. From mock-up study, to patient journey mapping. Along with NKC’s lean methodology, we are pursuing a new type of floor layout as a new paradigm of future dialysis clinic practice. M

NEW TREATMENT SPACE EVOLVING FROM TYPICAL LAYOUT PAST RESEARCH INIDICATE ACCESS TO NATURE IS CRUCIAL TO PATIENTS.

Shifting from current enclosed clinic layout toward a porous fenestrated communityscaled space to provide a cozy and less clinicfeel space to ease patient’s long experience of routine dialysis. Past research provide strong evidence that clinic with access to nature can provide better clinic atmosphere and enhance patient’s health. This is the goal of new layout is aiming toward.

Northwest Kidney Centers is planning to build a new operation/ administration center and new logistic center together with up to 32 seats of large dialysis clinic. As a new facility come after the design of Rainier Beach clinic. Design concept of access to nature has been also brought into the planning phase. Besides complex programs in single two-story building, to achieve access to nature with no courtyard option for 32-seat clinic space is a tremendous challenge and massive study is conducted. Current solution is to adapt U-shape scheme to balance staff operational needs and patient’s experience of nature view. M

Within a developing high-tech park and adjacent to a university, this international school campus locating in suburb area of metropolitan city of Wuhan will provide K-12 study environment to 3 international schools: 1 English school and 2 French schools. Schools will have their own teaching building and share a small size theatre and a sports facility, as well as a academic size of soccer field acting as a buffer to isolate campus from outside. To accomodate 3 schools inside a tiny site with only one side adjacent to public road bring us first challenge of campus circulation.
