CHI Baby Guide A handy booklet to survive in HK with your babies, toddlers and young children.

Welcome... Hello there! On behalf of the CHI family we would like to welcome you to CHI, and if this is your first time to Hong Kong - 你好! For us it’s the family that makes a home, and we hope you all can quickly settle into your CHI home. Here’s a quick guide to a few places and things we have gathered from our CHI family on what they like to do together. So go out, explore and enjoy Hong Kong with your family. If you have any question, comments or would like to share your CHI experience, please feel free to contact our Building Management and we’ll be happy to help.

CHI Management Raising Kids in HK Hong Kong is good place for families, with lots of different activities, entertainment and options available for children. Public transportation is convenient and easy with the MTR, buses, trams and ferries, however if you have a baby stroller it may be a little challenging with narrow entrances and crowded spaces - so a taxi may be a more comfortable option. Not all MTRs have lifts or escalators, and don’t be timid about asking someone for help if you need it! Employing a domestic helper / carers is widely acceptable in Hong Kong and there are numerous agencies that can help with arranging interviews, processing visas and other details. If you’re not able to have an extra person stay at home, there are affordable accommodation options that you can cover the costs of for your domestic helper to live in. As it’s an important decision to make, always ask friends or people you trust for recommendations first.

Born in Hong Kong Congratulations on your new born - now to the registry! First, make an appointment online at www.gov.hk/birthregistration and check with the hospital that your baby’s birth return has been delivered to the registrar. If you register your baby within 42 days of their birth, there is no charge. After that until 1 year old, there is a registration fee of HK$140 and over a year HK$680. The Kowloon Birth Registry is right next to CHI 279 Address: M/F, Yau Ma Tei Carpark Building, 250 Shanghai Street, Yau Ma Tei, Tel. 2359 4485 On island side the Hong Kong Birth Registry is in Admiralty Address: 3/F, Low Block, Queensway Government Offices, 66 Queensway Tel. 2867 2785 Note. The child does not need to be present when registering, only one of the parents. Parents need to be bring copies of their HKIDs and marriage certificate (if there is no marriage certificate, the father’s name can still be included on the birth certificate, so check the website for the details).

Chinese Traditions for Babies Moon Yuet - Full Moon Celebration This is held when your baby is one month old and is a time to introduce him/her to the extended family and friends. Red eggs are eaten, red laisee packets given symbolising good luck, blessings and health, and sometimes the baby will have their first haircut - or even shaved. 100th Day Celebration Another party for the family and friends to celebrate the first 100 days of life to bless the child with 100 years of life. Clothing and jewellery are common gifts and the baby may wear a silver pendant to symbolise longevity.
