Prayer @ Chizuk Amuno Learning @ Chizuk Amuno Our Achshav 9th Graders Enjoy Learning in Israel On January 2, we proudly welcomed home our Achshav Cohort I Israel Mission participants, the first students to participate in the new Chizuk Amuno and Beth El Achshav: Leadership Now program. After a year and a half of learning about Jewish approaches to leadership through Israeli history and heroes, 22 ninth grade students put their learning to action during an 11-day trip that took them from the antiquities of Jerusalem to the technological wonders of the Weisman Institute, from making new friends in Ashkelon to getting cozy with old ones in a Bedoin tent, and from the courage of Masada to the bravery of the IDF. The trip, which for the majority of the students was their first to Israel, put their many years of Jewish studies into perspective and provided the environment to forge an even deeper connection to their Jewish identity. As one student wrote, “the first day when

we were shepherds, I felt like I was part of the land.” Said another, “[I’m] learning new things and becoming more confident.”

The trip was even more meaningful because it coincided with the last three days of Hanukkah. The feeling of being in a truly Jewish country was pervasive, as the wreaths and trees so prominent in America were replaced by hanukkiyot and donut-stands. Said one student, “Hanukkah in Israel is so much better. It’s so cool standing

Sharing the Holiday with our Elders

by RRS Students Jenna Resnik and Hannah Stone On December 7, 2014, Yad B’Yad – Hand in Hand – went to Weinberg Village. Yad B’Yad is a group of Rosenbloom Religious School students and their parents who do handson community service. Usually, kids under 13 don’t get the opportunity to do community service. This program gives those kids a chance to see the outcome of a mitzvah. Every month or couple of months, we do something. This time, we had a Hanukkah party with the residents at Weinberg Village. We sang songs to them and then we played driedel. While playing our game, it

was heartwarming to see the smiles on their faces. Older people don’t usually get a lot of visitors, and they were extremely grateful to have kids there with them. Afterwards, the kitchen staff even brought us a snack as a thank you for coming and visiting the residents. Everyone, including the kids, the parents, and the residents, came out of the party feeling happy and in full holiday spirit. We would like to thank Michelle Clay and Richard Stone for setting up this wonderful party for us, and also the staff and residents at Weinberg Village for having us. We all had a great time! 4

where Hanukkah actually was.” Many students also reflected on the realization that in visiting Israel they were living experiences that many of their great-grandparents had only dreamed of. As the trip drew to a close, the students were asked to think about how the trip had changed them, and when their next trip to Israel might be. Some have already asked that Achshav offer a Hebrew language component, to prepare them for their next visit. The Achshav Israel Mission was truly a transformative experience for many of the participants, and it could not have happened without the generous support of many people and organizations. Achshav: Leadership Now is so grateful to The Florence and Charles Hoffberger Family Foundation, The Charles Crane Family Foundation, and The Jacob & Hilda Blaustein Fund for the Enrichment of Jewish Education, an endowment of The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore. In the words of our students, “todah rabbah!”

Attention 2017-2018 B’nei Mitzvah Families Note Important Changes

It is difficult to believe that we are already planning for our 2017-2018 b’nei mitzvah students. Our date assignment process is a little different than in previous years. Rather than assign dates based on the calendar year as we have done in the past, we will now be assigning dates according to the school year (August through June). This will enable us to create one cohort of students, mostly in the same grade, who can participate with their families in our preparation programs, training, meetings, and gatherings. We will soon be assigning dates for students born between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005. If you have not yet received your B’nei Mitzvah introductory letter, please contact Marci Scher, mscher@ chizukamuno.org or ext. 223. The letter includes a B’nei Mitzvah Application, which asks, in advance, for any dates or pairings that we should avoid. Instead of assigning a date to our families and then asking if the date works with their family schedule, we now ask families, in advance, of any date preferences or pairings that we

should avoid through the completion of a B’nei Mitzvah Application Form. Finally, we recognize that the finances surrounding a bar/bat mitzvah year can be significant so we will be reducing some of the expenses and spreading them out so they don’t all occur at one time. In the time period between the assignment of a bar/bat mitzvah date and the day of the simhah, families will continue to be invited to participate in “613 & Me,” a series of programs designed to enhance the meaning of this milestone lifecycle event. These programs include a session entitled “It’s a Date” that will explore each child’s Torah portion, a Mitzvah Fair to help your family be more engaged in mitzvot and acts of social justice, a special Shabbat dinner for our b’nei mitzvah families, and a special Shabbat morning service to help families become more familiar with and comfortable in our Sanctuary service. We hope that these changes to our bar/bat mitzvah preparation program are helpful and enhance the b’nei mitzvah experiences for our families.

613 & Me: Preparing for Bar and Bat Mitzvah It’s a Journey • Friday, March 27 • 6 p.m.

Sixth graders and their families go on a scavenger hunt through the Friday evening prayer service. Following a delicious Shabbat dinner, the rabbis will lead an engaging discussion on the meaning of becoming Bar and Bat Mitzvah.

Preschool Students Participate in Day of Service On the day we honor Martin Luther King, Jr., students and families from the Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center visited North Oaks seniors and shared activities with them. Books were read and songs were sung – accompanied by GECEC music teacher, Becky Gordon. Games were played – such as “roll the question die,” which elicited some pretty funny answers to the question “What do you like to cook?” (…Nothing!) The students presented each resident with a craft 5

item created by GECEC students and brightened the day for many who can no longer get out and about. We thank GECEC parent Lauren Kean for organizing this project, with the support of the Jewish Volunteer Connection.

Continued from page 1 in religious identity, and in peril due to an irrational prejudice and vicious ego. The story is an important marker of Jewish responsibility for our people’s welfare and identity. The story of Purim is also a parody, a spoof. Biblical scholars understand Megillat Esther to be a farce, a comedy designed to provoke laughter through exaggerated characters and ludicrous situations. The pious Jew Mordecai, who everyone knows is a Jew, encourages his niece Esther to enter a pagan king’s beauty contest while hiding her Jewish identity. The Persian king is upset by his queen’s refusal to attend a party but gives no real thought to his decision to annihilate a portion of his population. In a mad and threatening world, we can’t maintain our stamina and our values if we can’t imagine a happy ending. The Book of Esther affirms our Jewish place in the larger world, no matter the circumstances. The Purim story encourages us to demonstrate our values and beliefs in all places at all times. That’s why I’m looking forward to Purim. In a world where religious fanaticism threatens us all, it’ll be good to laugh, to celebrate, and to honor a religious tradition, our Jewish tradition, that reminds us there’s even a time and a place to mock and to make fun.
