RABBI’S COLUMN
BOOK CHAT
Sunday April 22, 10 a.m.
Her name is Tali. She is one of the tour guides at Independence Hall in Tel Aviv, where Israel’s Declaration of RABBI PAUL SCHNEIDER Independence was signed. I’ve heard her presentation several times, and in my opinion, she is one of the best guides in Israel.
Three Floors Up by Eshkol Nevo Finalist for the Fiction and Book Club categories of the 2017 National Jewish Book Awards Set in a Tel Aviv apartment building, this best-selling Israeli novel examines a society in crisis, through the turmoils, secrets, unreliable confessions, and problematic decisions of the building’s residents.
So, what’s so great about Tali? Every good guide touches your mind. Tali touches your heart. She talks with passion about that Friday afternoon, May 14, 1948, and describes in detail the hall, the flag, the tables, the chairs, the music, the people who gathered and the dignitaries who signed the document. She spoke of the ongoing battles between the Jews and Arabs throughout the land at that moment, and the reason why many of the delegates from Jerusalem could not be there. And then we stood in that same hall, and listened to the original broadcast of Ben Gurion announcing the creation of the State of Israel, and the Chief Rabbi, with his voice trembling, leading those gathered in the Shaheyanu prayer, and the singing of Hatikvah, accompanied by Leonard Bernstein and the Philharmonic Orchestra. It’s a very moving experience. And then Tali speaks to us from her heart, and she says that “You will go back to the States in another week, and you will forget a lot of what you saw and did during your trip to Israel. But you will never forget how you felt .” Between 1990-2012, I had the privilege of leading many Schechter 8th grade trips to Israel. What I remember best Continued on Page 2

were the times that I was deeply touched by what I saw, and what I experienced. These people whom you have gotten to know are not just bus drivers or counselors or students. These people are your brothers and your sisters. And these places that you have visited are not just wonderful places. They are part of your home. Israel is your home and its people are your family.” That’s all she said. I got-up from my chair, tears in my eyes. I walked across the room and gave Rifka a hug. “Rabbot banot asu hayil v’at alit el kulanah. Many have done great,” I whispered, “ but you exceeded them all.” Tali was right. I remember exactly how I felt. “This is not just any land and these aren’t just any people. This is your land and these are your people.” What a powerful message, what a marvelous gift to the Schechter 8th grade class. May Israel’s 70th year bring peace and healing to all of its inhabitants! B’Shalom, Paul Schneider

Peter, Paul, & (Hazzan) Manny ’s Retirement SUNDAY, JUNE 3, 7:30 P.M.
In honor of over twenty years of service as Hazzan of Chizuk Amuno Congregation and in recognition of his election as Hazzan Emeritus, we are pleased to invite you to an evening of celebration on June 3, 2018, in honor of Hazzan Emanuel “Manny” Perlman. The musical event will highlight Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, with Peter returning to Chizuk Amuno to honor our retiring Hazzan in concert, and with Noel/Paul Stookey participating through video, and of course, Manny joining in the celebration. Mr. Yarrow was the artist of the first concert that Hazzan Perlman produced for our congregation. The evening will allow us to experience the rich history of Peter, Paul and Mary, and the trio’s cultural and moral phenomenon, as we pay tribute to Hazzan Manny Perlman for his legacy of caring, music, and artistry.
HAZZAN EMANUEL PERLMAN MUSIC ENDOWMENT FUND ESTABLISHED
Of equal excitement, in recognition of Hazzan Perlman, we are pleased to announce the creation of the Hazzan Emanuel Perlman Music Endowment Fund. This permanent endowment, generated by the contributions to the event, will be used to underwrite musical programs in the synagogue and schools in perpetuity, will underwrite a portrait of the Hazzan in our hallway of emeritus clergy, and will provide transitional funding during the search for our next hazzan. In order to celebrate a memorable evening and create a meaningful endowment, members and friends are invited to sponsor and participate in the evening at multiple contribution levels. It is our goal to raise $350,000 from those whose lives Hazzan Perlman has so meaningfully touched during his many years of work locally and nationally, as well as within and outside of the Jewish Community.
The concert is only a few months away, so please look for your invitation to participate in this exciting and important evening. The 7:30 p.m. concert will be preceded by a congregational meeting and followed by a gala dessert reception. Tickets to the evening will be $36 for general admission with the following Donor Categories for reserved seats in our sanctuary. “DEFIANT REQUIEM” MOVIE
Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m., Krieger Auditorium at Chizuk Amuno Please join us for a viewing of the feature-length documentary film “Defiant Requiem” that depicts the story of the Nazi concentration camp Theresienstadt. Led by imprisoned conductor Rafael Schächter, the inmates of Theresienstadt fought back with art and music. Through hunger, disease, and slave labor, the Jewish prisoners held onto their humanity by staging plays, composing opera, performing operas like Verdi’s Requiem, and using paper and ink to record the horrors around them. This film presentation will help prepare you for the performance of Verdi’s Requiem on Sunday, April 15. This film is a FREE, NON-TICKETED event.
BALTIMORE-WIDE YOM HASHOAH EVENT
A TRIBUTE TO THE HUMAN SPIRIT
Sunday, April 15 at 4 p.m. | Chizuk Amuno Congregation
The featured performance will be Verdi’s dramatic masterpiece, Requiem, a breathtaking and varied piece expressing a full range of emotion from terror, joy, uncertainty, and the indelible strength of the human spirit in the face of tragedy. Between 1943 and 1944, the Requiem was performed 16 times by the prisoners of Theresienstadt, a Nazi concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. Our performance of Verdi’s Requiem will feature the Morgan State University Choir joining the Bach in Baltimore Choir and Orchestra, conducted by T. Herbert Dimmock. Over two hundred musicians will together recreate Verdi’s “most famous opera” in remembrance of the Shoah and in an affirmation of our shared humanity. The program will begin with a Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony honoring survivors, with Hazzan Emanuel Perlman chanting the El Maleh Rahamim Memorial Prayer. The concert will be accompanied by a projected visual presentation and displays to commemorate the Holocaust. Admission to A Tribute to the Human Spirit is FREE, but tickets are required. Tickets are available now at the Chizuk Amuno office, 410-486-6400. RARE DISEASE DAY
Marci Scher and her family’s lives were changed many times over the years because of a rare disease. Marci had learned that her son, Ian, had a rare motor neuron/neurogenetic disease which was progressive, non-treatable and terminal. Ian had a mutation of the VRK1 gene, also known as Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia with Spinal Muscular Atrophy or PCH1A. At that time, according to records the doctors could find, Ian was the 4th documented case. On September 15, 2016, Ian peacefully passed away. We thank Marci for sharing her story and journey with us as Ian was a part of our family as well. We continue honoring Ian and celebrate his life in many ways, including as we gather as a staff and wear “jeans for genes” in support of Rare Disease Day. To learn more information or how you can get involved, please contact Marci Scher at mscher@chizukamuno.org, or visit globalgenes.org.
TIME AND TALENT
Dixie Leikach had just completed her term as Sisterhood President when she was asked to serve again. The Sisterhood Judaica Shop needed a co-manager, as Anne King had been managing the shop for over 15 years. With her retail experience and love of merchandising, Dixie decided to work with Anne to start the transition. Dixie and Anne are working closely together to delineate tasks so that the job is manageable. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the Sisterhood Judaica Shop is a wonderful resource for our members and those in the community. Special orders can come in anytime and there are often emergencies that need to be handled after hours. “I have been in the shop on a Friday afternoon and had someone run in right before closing to purchase a glass for a wedding to take place on Saturday. If we hadn’t been there, what would the couple have done?” says Dixie.
Many would be surprised as to what you can purchase from the Judaica shop instead of shopping online. Chizuk Amuno Sisterhood is proud to have their Judaica shop still open and thriving, as most places nationally and locally have closed or minimized their Judaica shop presence. What you get from our shop is that personal service that cannot be replaced when shopping online. Kippot for your Bar or Bat Mitzvah guests can be ordered, and you can see samples of fabrics and colors in the shop before deciding. There are many items that make great gifts for a new baby, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Wedding, or Hostess Gift. We have a variety of items that can be customized to make your gift a memorable one! You will find that our prices are comparable, if not better, than what you find online. Your decision to purchase your Judaica through the Judaica Shop truly makes a difference in the success of the shop. The profits of the shop go directly to Sisterhood and make it possible for Sisterhood to support our Shul and Schools. There are many new vendors and new items arriving on a regular basis so if you have not visited the shop recently, be sure to stop by! You may not see Dixie on the day you visit, but one of our dedicated, friendly volunteers will be happy to help you! Page 7

KRIEGER SCHECHTER DAY SCHOOL EPIC FACULTY PARTY SHABBATON RECAP
On March 2nd and 3rd, over 500 members of the KSDS community gathered together to celebrate Shabbat and the school’s 36th anniversary. Representatives from each KSDS constituency (alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, current parents, faculty, former faculty, and students) led every aspect of the weekend including Torah, chevruta study, yoga/meditation, davening, kids activities, and more. It was a beautiful and sacred Shabbat experience for the entire KSDS family, past and present.
GOLDSMITH EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER OPERATION “SPRUCE IT UP”
Children experience the deepest, most genuine learning when they are having fun! Our teachers customize their classrooms to provide opportunities for discovery, cooperative learning and to develop skills for success. Furniture enhances the classroom layout and choosing appropriate sized tables and chairs for the children was a priority with this project. Our parents Association fundraising (over the past 2 years) allowed us to purchase new wooden tables and chairs for all of our classrooms as well as brighten up our hallways with a fresh coat of paint. This was start of operation “spruce it up” in honor of our upcoming 60th Anniversary. Thank you to our Parents Association and our team of Kelly Blavatt, Alison Feldstein, Jodie/Casey Silverman, Stephanie Weinstein, Paige Schwartz and Anne Marie Goldberger who helped assemble the tables.

On March 4th, KSDS paid tribute to former and current faculty and staff as part of the school's 36th anniversary celebration. 140 attendees gathered together to commemorate the outstanding educational program that they have built together and shared lots of laughs, memories and hugs. Attendees traveled from near and far (including Israel and Colorado!) to enjoy the Mexican-themed reception and improv comedy performance. Thanks to this amazing collection of people for their priceless contribution to our school.
ENGAGE WITH OUR SCHOOLS
YOUNG FAMILIES OF CHIZUK AMUNO - CHALLAH BAKING WITH RABBI WECHSLER Many thanks to Rabbi Wechsler for opening her home while sharing her challah baking expertise. Parents from Rosenbloom Religious School, Goldsmith ECC, KSDS, Achshav, and Young Families of Chizuk Amuno all came together to gain new skills making three varieties of challah. The pretzel variety was eggless and required boiling while the other 2 varieties (Molly’s and Sweet) offered a more traditional process. The group also enjoyed a little taste tasting and wine while waiting for cooling and rising. Apple butter, hummus and mustard complimented the sweet and savory tastes of the challot. Everybody had their favorites based on ingredients and of course taste!
ROSENBLOOM RELIGIOUS SCHOOL RRS BASEBALL CARDS
I overheard several students reviewing this year’s line-up and their favorite baseball players. March 29th was Opening Day at Camden Yards where the Orioles played the Minnesota Twins. Children need heroes, and baseball has them. Heroes, in their feats and in their person, embody ideals. Personal development requires adult models for children to emulate and to admire. Children can also be heroes to other children and Rosenbloom Religious School has them. Let’s imagine that there are trading cards of Religious School kid heroes. On one side we would find a picture of our favorite stars. But what would we find on the backside? Where we find the number of games played on a baseball card, Religious School playing cards would record attendance at religious school. Where we find the positions played, religious school trading cards would list the virtues, qualities, and attributes of so many of our students. For example, Mason S. always remembers to bring Tzedakah. Ellie and Lexi K. always say hello to Rabbi Seltzer when he greets them at arrival. Ayala A. helps our Giborim students read their Hebrew letters. Julia B. is kind and a real mensch. Religious school trading cards would have their share of “hits,” especially on the back of student cards. Roy H. and Meital A hit a double – Roy recited the Torah blessings over 20 times in the Family Service and Meital has perfect attendance. Collin B, Reuben D, Linley G, Nadav W, Daniel and Jacob W, Caroline K, hit a triple – all of them have led the Ashrei in the Main Sanctuary. Paul H, David K, Sophia K, and Bobby Stone hit one out of the park – they have continued their Jewish education in the 7th grade RRS after becoming Bnei Mitzvah. The French author, Jacques Barzun, once wrote: “Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball.” I would like to paraphrase Mr. Barzun to express another idea. “Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of Rosenbloom Religious School had better learn about our heroes.” - Rabbi Stuart Seltzer
ACQUIRING A JEWISH LENS
50 Achshav and Netivon teens and faculty dove into the national debate over how their generation should respond to the tragic recent Florida high school shooting. In a special symposium, Rabbi Debi Wechsler led our students in a text study on what Jewish law has to say about weapons and self-defense. Morah Lilach and Morah Orly discussed how the issues of guns play out in Israeli society and Dr. Martin Shuster (Judaic Studies Dean of Goucher College) guided our teens through philosophical dilemmas. Dr. Neil Rubin moderated a discussion on gun issues, prompting the students to share their own opinions and thoughts. For nearly two hours, the teens were focused and engaged as they bounced ideas off one another, shared what’s happening in their schools, and even expressed concerns for fellow students. It was clear that our students knew that Achshav and Netivon were safe spaces to grapple with the important issues of the day. At Achshav and Netivon our teens continue their relationships with peers and teachers who can provide a unique resource for their intellectual curiosities. They look at contemporary issues and events from a Jewish perspective and acquire a Jewish lens as part of a “tool kit” to make sense of their reality, the world, and their changing minds and bodies.
