RABBI’S COLUMN Are you ready for the Four Questions? Not “those” Four Questions but the Four Questions RABBI DEBI WECHSLER BEFORE the Four Questions. Judaism is always looking to give our moments and our days new meaning beyond the ordinary day-to-day routine. One of the ways in which it does that is by taking what would otherwise be just another weekend and giving it a special name and special character. For four (pun intended) Sabbaths leading up to Passover, our tradition highlights four different aspects of our lives. It does this through special Sabbaths, each with its own name, its own context, its own scriptural reading, and its own question or set of questions. On February 10th this year we will mark Shabbat Shekalim, the Sabbath of the census when each Israelite was asked to contribute a half shekel to be counted and to help with the upkeep of the Tent of Meeting. On that Shabbat we will ask ourselves: 1.) How do I participate in the upkeep of my synagogue community so that I might be “counted”? On February 24th we mark one of my favorite special Sabbaths (it was the Maftir reading at my Bat Mitzvah) Shabbat Zachor, the Sabbath of memory when we are commanded to remember and then act upon our Continued on Page 2
