THIS MONTH HaHodesh AT CHIZUK AMUNO CONGREGATION AND SCHOOLS Engaging Jewish Life & Learning JUNE/JULY 2017 | Sivan/Tammuz/Av 5777

RABBI’S COLUMN “L’HITRAOT” At the end of this month Robin and I will be moving to San Diego, CA where I will serve as Senior Rabbi RABBI RON SHULMAN of Congregation Beth El in La Jolla. As a result, our relationships with so many of you and with Chizuk Amuno Congregation will change. They will not end. The Rabbinic Office will have our contact information should you wish to be in touch. We welcome your visit if you’re ever nearby. I am grateful to so many of you for your gestures of kindness and appreciation over the last months. Your calls, letters, emails, comments, and visits are gratifying and meaningful to me. The real privilege of our thirteen years together has been your gracious invitation to share in so many life experiences and sacred moments. My special opportunity has been to meet you as individuals and families, each one of you offering me new insights about life and being Jewish. Thank you.

The Talmud teaches that when rabbis and students took leave of one another they offered this prayer: “May you see the dreams of your world fulfilled in your lifetime. May you inherit the world to come and may your hope last for all generations.” I pray you know the blessings of life, health, and goodness. I wish you many more years of personal and communal celebration at Chizuk Amuno Congregation. I often sign my letters and columns with the Hebrew phrase, B’Shalom Rav. It means, “With abundant peace.” I also use it as a word play. The word rav, meaning great or abundant, is also the title, rabbi or teacher. The word shalom is, of course, the word for peace we use as a greeting. My desire in using this phrase is to wish you peace and wellbeing in your life and to say, shalom, greetings from your rabbi. Yet, in this particular case as I say good-bye, I close with a different Hebrew word. L’hitraot – Until we see each other again,

CHIZUK AMUNO RABBINIC TRANSITION Magnify your engagement MOVING FORWARD We are delighted that over 400 congregants shared in enthusiastic and thoughtful discussion at our Transition Roundtables during the months of March and April. While we heard many interesting and constructive perspectives, one of the major themes that emerged was the need to innovate for the future while honoring our traditions. Other topics that surfaced included improved efforts to engage a broader range of congregants in our communal activities including, but not limited to, religious services, education and volunteer activities. Our consultant, Dr. Guy Sapirstein, has recorded detailed notes of the many ideas, opinions, and concerns raised. He will be preparing a summary report for our committee that will ultimately be shared with our community in the Fall. A big thank you goes to our Roundtable subcommittee whom all of you heard from during the process. We will be conducting a survey of our entire community this summer to further assist in exploring who we are as a congregation and who we want to be in the future. In late June, we will begin to craft our Application to the Rabbinical Assembly, utilizing all of the feedback from our community. Please understand that we strongly encourage you to use the interval between now and then to communicate your thoughts and ideas. In addition to talking with any of our committee members, you may email us at search@chizukamuno.org or you may drop your written thoughts into our suggestions boxes throughout Chizuk Amuno and our schools. After the application is submitted in late summer, we expect to begin receiving applications. A committee will plan to begin reviewing the initial candidates who submit an application after the High Holy Days. In due course, the most promising candidates will be invited to meet our congregation and to participate in our services and other events. In the end, you, our congregants, will have the final vote for our next Chizuk Amuno Senior Rabbi as provided for in our by-laws. Thank you to all who have shared their visions with us to date. We hope to hear from even more of you! Stephen Pomerantz and Sandi Moffet, Chairs Chizuk Amuno Congregation Rabbinic Transition and Search Committee Ronald Attman, Allison Baumwald, Jason A. GOLDSEKER HESED AWARD

CAMP LETTERS

Does your Chizuk Amuno sixth grader have a passion for mitzvot and an idea for an innovative hesed project in the community? Pre b’nei mitzvah students who are currently enrolled in formal Jewish education are eligible for the Goldseker Hesed Award which provides a financial gift to be used towards the hesed project and a tzedakah box.

L’Hitraot, farewell to our students heading off to spend their summers at camp. We like to keep in touch with our kids over the summer and send letters to them. Please email Rabbi Wechsler at dwechsler@chizukamuno.org with your child’s name, summer address and the dates when they will be away. Kayitz Na’im – have a great summer!

This award was created by Shelley and Sheldon Goldseker in recognition of young students who perform meaningful acts of loving-kindness. To be considered for the Goldseker Hesed Award for 2017, please be in touch with Rabbi Wechsler at dwechsler@chizukamuno.org.

COLLEGE OUTREACH Calling all rising College Freshman! We want to stay in touch with our Chizuk Amuno member students when they go off to college. We do that by sending themed holiday packages with kosher snacks and supplementing the packages with witty and entertaining letters from our rabbis. Once you have your child’s college address please be in touch with Bonnie Ziegelstein bonnieroy3@verizon.net. If you would like to volunteer to help Bonnie pack and mail goodies, that would be great too.

ROSH SHIRAH We delighted to welcome Sam Blustin as our Rosh Shirah (songleader) for the 2017-2018 year. For Sam, music has always been a big part of life. From singing in choirs to serving as Rosh Shirah at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, he combines his passion for music with Judaism, opening doors to deeper meaning within Jewish tradition. Sam is also a Rabbinical Student at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. He’s excited to be joining Chizuk Amuno next year as Rosh Shirah thanks to the support of the Zaiman Educational Alliance Fund. Sam will be spending a long weekend with us each month from September – May where he will be involved in music in Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center, Krieger Schechter Day School, and Rosenbloom Religious School. He will also be songleading and leading prayer services for our Shabbat communities. When Sam is with us we will be providing home hospitality to him. Please be in touch with Rabbi Wechsler if you can host Sam for one of his weekend visits this year.

CHIZUK AMUNO CEMETERIES - PRICE INCREASE ON JULY 1 Chizuk Amuno Congregation maintains two beautiful nearby cemeteries – our historic Arlington Cemetery in Baltimore and our Garrison Forest Cemetery in Owings Mills. To keep up with increased costs, the price for cemetery plots and perpetual care will increase as of July 1st. Preneed planning relieves burden and stress at the time of a loss. For details or to arrange a visit to either cemetery, please contract Marsha Yoffe at the synagogue (410-486-6400 ext. 309).

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE SOUTHERN CIVIL RIGHTS JOURNEY Last month a group from our synagogue went with me on a powerful four day journey through the South to learn about the struggles for African Americans to gain equality in the 1950’s and 1960’s and to understand the role of Jews in the Civil Rights struggle and today. Our journey began in Atlanta at the Leo Frank Site to give a context for Jews in the South. From there we went to Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. Martin Luther King preached from the pulpit. It was powerful to close our eyes, listen to the recording of Dr. King and feel his presence. His “beloved community” was the backdrop for our exploration of The King Center and his tomb where both he and his wife Coretta Scott King are buried. From Atlanta we traveled to Montgomery Alabama to visit the Civil Rights Memorial at the Southern Poverty Law Center. It was beautiful and rich with meaning. We saw images of water with the quote from the prophet Amos, “Let justice flow like a river.” From there we spent a few hours with Rosa Parks. We saw where she got on the bus and where she was arrested giving rise to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Beneath her image cast in bronze we studied Pirkei Avot about valuing the dignity of other human beings as we value our own. From there we journeyed to the sight of a former slave warehouse, now home to the Equal Justice Initiative, an amazing organization doing the work of advocating for racial justice today. It was an intense and powerful trip so we took one night to have some fun at a minor league baseball and watched the Montgomery Biscuits defeat the Chattanooga Lookout. Instead of t-shirts they launch biscuits into the crowd. It was very different than being at Camden Yards! On our last full day, we traveled a long road from Montgomery to Selma to Birmingham. We learned the names, seen the faces, and heard the stories of the struggle for civil rights. We held in our hands the rocks on which they stood as they set out on their march from Selma to Montgomery. We walked in the footsteps of giants as we crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge. In Selma we met Joanne Bland who was beaten on the bridge on Bloody Sunday and went on to found the National Voting Rights Museum there. We prayed in the shadow of the 16th street Baptist Church with Reverend Calvin Woods who was active in the civil rights movement and drove Dr. King to the airport to catch his flight for Memphis where he was murdered. He taught us the songs of the movement in the Kelly Ingram Park in Birmingham where he recalled the children and adults who had water cannons and dogs turned on them.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS THE CHIZUK AMUNO FAMILY SERVICE WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER! Shabbat mornings, Hoffberger Chapel 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. June 3, June 10, June 24, July 8, July 22, August 12, August 26

Join us for prayers and popsicles! Rabbi Stuart Seltzer, Rabbi Moshe Schwartz, adult volunteers, and amazing students will lead a lively interactive participatory service filled with meaningful and joyous opportunities to practice the prayer skills of the Shabbat morning service. Whether it be reading Torah, having an aliyah, leading a prayer, opening the ark, or just participating as a member of the congregation, children are encouraged to learn the service by actually doing it. Psalm 100, verse 2, teaches us “to serve God with joy!” Everyone at the Family Service serves God, and the goal of Jewish education, with an excitement, gladness, and joy which is contagious. After the service, families will celebrate Kiddush together and enjoy family and friend time playing in the gym and the playground.

AUTHOR MICHAEL DOOLING’S VISIT TO KSDS On April 5, we held our annual authorin-residence program with author/ illustrator, Michael Dooling. Mr. Dooling shared his secrets for being a successful author and illustrator, offered tips for drawing like a pro, and held a lunch and learn with some Lower School students. This annual program possible was made possible by The SilvermanBrown Author-In-Residence Fund.

We counted the Omer each night which helped us focus on the blessings and challenges of each day. There were so many emotional and meaningful moments of the journey and we were glad to partner with Etgar 36 for planning and leading this amazing adventure in adult experiential learning. Page 5

A CELEBRATION OF OVER 13 YEARS OF JEWISH EDUCATION! On Tuesday evening, May 9, Chizuk Amuno Netivon celebrated five students – Ariana Gladstone, Naomi Hoch, Alanna Sereboff, Rebecca Sereboff, and Keren Stearns – who had the dedication and conviction to set aside one evening a week to continue their Jewish education during their high school years. Each of these remarkable students will be moving forward with over 13 years of Jewish education, excited to engage in the Jewish community and prepared to face the challenges they will meet on their college campuses and beyond. For these students, Jewish learning and Jewish leadership go hand in hand. In their graduation speeches all of the students commented on how Judaism is an important factor in their developing identities. They expressed that through their Netivon studies of Jewish history, Israel, sacred texts, and philosophy they now feel equipped to apply Jewish perspectives to modern day controversies and current events. During the ceremony their rabbis and teachers also noted how proud and privileged they were to spend a few hours a week with such outstanding students. Of course, a special thank you is also due to the parents of our graduating seniors, for their constant support and partnership during their children’s high school years.
