Blidworth Library art club celebrates World Book Day
Children and parents from Blidworth Library Art Club celebrated their love of a good story with a fantastic session to mark World Book Day. Art Club members dressed up as characters from their favourite book and created artwork based on the stories they love best, making another colourful display for the library. We also had a reading of Bee’s favourite tale “The Princess Who Saved Herself” and discovered everybody’s idea of a good read. For his picture of the Gruffalo’s Child one of our youngest members, Jack got to take home the friendly Art Club dinosaur Artysaurus for the month. We’re looking forward to hearing about their adventures together! (Continues on page 11)
Farnsfield Local History Society It was the sixteenth A.G.M. of Farnsfield Local History Society's on 14th March. Philip Marsh retired as chairman after a two year stint and he was thanked for all his work over that time, being beyond the call of duty and during that time publishing two books. “Journey of a Lifetime - Farnsfield to Rainworth” had helped boost the funds of the Society. Margaret Collingham also proposed a vote of thanks to all the members of the committee for the work they do for the Society. Doreen Clarke was elected new chairman. After the conclusion of the business we enjoyed going back to our youth with
music from the 50s, 60s and 70s, thanks to BRIAN HOWES and his 75s and 45 rpm records and Dansette record player. (Continues on page 15)

One too many There must be a million poems Written here on this earth If I could write one of my own There would be a million and one, for what’s its worth But I am not a poet or a writer be How could I make a poem of a flower or a tree I would not know where to start What is worse! How to end a verse How many lines to a verse Four, five, six or seven Where to put commas or stops Should I start with capitals or end in dots Perhaps a colourful poem about a rainbow Or one in black about the night Or one dark and grey about a cloudy day But best of all, one blue and sunny all the way I think I’ll leave my pen in the drawer Not to tire my brain or put words to the fore I’ll just read what others have wrote I think a million poems is enough to note Arthur Radford

arrange for follow-up appointments with community teams such as district nursing. Recently there have been a series of community events to hear from the public about the new treatment centre at Newark and local NHS-Commissioning Intentions, for the next 12 months. If you want to know more check out the Newark & Sherwood Clinical Commissioning Group:website - www.newarkandsherwoodccg. nhs.uk. Knowing that there are radical changes at your GPs, particularly in respect of who you see. This may not be your preferred doctor but a specialist nurse or chemist (pharmacist). I know that getting appointments is difficult, and things may not improve quickly, but we the public need to see how best to manage the changes within the NHS locally. For us at the Abbey Medical
Group, Patient Participation Group (PPG), we have decided to have an action desk for our patients. We will give out information and take it back to the practice, in the hope of being heard and ensuring we get the best use of resources possible. This starts on Monday 9th April at Blidworth Surgery and Friday 20th April at Ravenshead Surgery. Both venues 10-12.30pm. See our poster in this newsletter. Gilly Hagen

Times are changing in the NHS
As we see the better weather and Spring appears, it is a time of planning changes in our local NHS services, particularly around the future shaping of General Practices. More about this next month. Nationally we are moving towards A & E Centres or Urgent Treatment Centre. The Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) in Newark will replace the urgent care centre and will open next month. The centre will be open 24 hours a day. And it is a GP-led, with a mix of GPs and other clinicians. It will see people with urgent care needs including illness and injuries. There will be a minor injuries unit on site as well. It is intended that it is a walk-in service with an option of making a pre-booked GP appointment via NHS 111. The clinical team at the urgent treatment centre will be able to see a patient’s full case record and can more easily

Home & Garden To trend or not to trend? 7
Send your news and photos to chloe@news-journal.co.uk
This is the question. Are you a follower or a creator? Neither is wrong, it’s just personal taste. It’s important to some people to be ’ontrend’, others prefer to create their own trends. Some may think it is difficult to keep up with the trends, due the financial implications. It may be easier than you think, I’m a massive advocate of small changes make all the difference. A few new cushions, a throw, an upcycled piece of furniture, a new statement rug or chair, and if this is too much for you, concentrate on the smaller accessories. What to look out for this year, it’s slightly different to last when grey was the predominant colour everywhere. This year’s tones are richer; navy, emerald greens, and violets. It’s about creating a mood, an ambience if you like. If you really want to be on trend, work towards this year’s pantone colour of the year which is Ultra violet. This does not mean you have got to go paint every wall in this tone, do it your way, introduce small amounts around the room and discover what works for you! If
you’re able to make bigger changes, plush materials on your upholstery is what it is all about; creating a splash with boisterous tones, using fabrics such as velvet create the drama your space needs to be bang up to date. Last year was taken over with the Scandi vibes, fresher paler tones, especially in furniture. We’re now going in the opposite direction and it’s dark, dark dark all the way. We’re definitely going glam again, with a slight retro twist. How do we do that? The devil is in the detail; handles, legs etc, whether it be gold, brass or matt black handles, or even a marble effect top. If we look at the colours that are in trend now in the various textiles on the market, they are highly influenced by travel and current world events. It’s about richness but down to earth in appearance, products in tones such as ochre and terracotta. Textures are important, but we are taking a step back to textures such as rattan and wicker. If it’s a homely and layered, then it will probably work. Natural materials are always a safe bet.
Not all trends from last year have been replaced but rather expended on, such as tropical prints. It’s more about the tones of green that are current and have a plusher feel than before, do it your way, be it a small injections or a drama. We also saw a big copper and rose gold trend last year, the metallics are still around but it’s all about the brass tones now. Try a new drinks tray or some new lamps, or how about some new kitchen accessories. This just touches on the trends that are out there, but remember, you don’t not have to go out and spend a fortune, purchasing all new accessories, you can spray your current products, make your own cushions, re upholster or upcycle some furniture, or even create your own art work. Where there’s a will, there’s always a way! And if keeping up with trends is all too much for you, give me a shout and I can help you with some great ideas on interiors@danielledurkandesigns.com Or follow my blog on my website weekly www. danielledurkandesigns.com
Considering changing your space? No idea where to start? When I visit my clients for the first time, the first question I ask is; “why are you doing this project”? It’s vital to know why you are doing something, otherwise how can you ever achieve your goal - because essentially you don’t have one. Decide if your project is purely cosmetic or practical, maybe the space doesn’t work for you, maybe it just doesn’t have the ‘feel good’ factor. You should be affected in a positive way by your surroundings, otherwise they are not working for you. As an Interior designer, it is so important that I understand how a client wants to feel in a space. Do they want the space to relax in or feel inspired in, do they want a stimulating space or an energetic space. This largely depends on a person’s lifestyle and how they use their space. After we take a brief, we can talk about how your space should look or function. Whether you are hiring someone or braving it alone, this is my advice from my experience. Knowing how you want to feel in the space will help you know what to do with the space. For example, if you wanted a relaxing space, the design should be simple, fresh, neutral tones and comfort is a must. A big mistake is going shopping and choosing a product you like or a finish you like. It’s not the right way to go about it, this is how to waste time, money and more than likely, regret the finished product. To put it in simple terms, if you are getting dressed for the day, would you choose your shoes or jewellery and then plan your outfit? Probably not. The starting point should be, deciding the sort of look you want to achieve and
then planning the layout of the space. Setting a budget is essential at this point, to allow you to start specking the products that will achieve the look and layout that you want. You are more likely to get your desired finished product, because you have a plan to follow. To give you an example of this, if you want to achieve a classical neutral look, or a plush elegant feel, even an industrial look; it’s time to get inspired, search for images that summarise this look.
Now it is time to create this look with your own twist. Design is like a sandwich, full of layers and flavours, each ingredient is essential to create the overall taste. There are many things to consider when planning your layout; what items you need, what storage you need, allowing enough circulating space and being aware how your space functions. These factors are all detrimental to creating the best overall space.
What to consider when designing your space

Farnsfield Cubs swimming challenge This term has been a very busy one 1st Farnsfield Cubs. So far this term the young people, aged 8 to 10½, have took part in several challenges across Nottinghamshire.
In January the pack took 10 members to the NESST Challenge Walk near Ollerton. The Cubs rambled 4 miles local villages ending with chips and sausages. Thank you to the adults that went along. More recently the Cubs have been working on their challenge award learning about the body by drawing life size versions of themselves! In February the Cubs joined in the District Swimming Gala event at Nottingham High School. 15 members of the pack attended an evening of swimming challenges. The young people participated in single and team events. A multitude of awards were handed out with Farnsfield Cubs coming
second overall. Well done to the young people who’s first time in the event was great to see!
More recently during March 1st Farnsfield Cubs has grown yet again with the addition of a second Cub pack running on a Thursday. They started on a very snowy Thursday during the “Beast from the East” snow but had a great night learning about their local surroundings going towards their Local Knowledge Activity Badge. Farnsfield Scout Group continues to offer young people everyday adventure but we can't do this without adult volunteers. We're looking for new helpers to the group committee who administer the group. If you think you can help visit 1stfarnsfield.org. uk/volunteer to see what role might suit you.

The Parish Council have had several reports of horses on land at the Sherwood Avenue Recreation area and the Bull Piece. Can we ask that horse riders take care to stick to designated bridleways at all times please.
Woodborough Bridge Club The match season is drawing to its close. Results have been mixed but we hope that our first team may return to the first division. We continue to support a number of charities. Recently we were one of many Clubs which held a Sim Pairs evening to support the RNLI and our contribution of over £100 will go towards a considerable sum raised by all participating Clubs. Richard Dale and John Glass were our best performing pair nationally. Unfortunately, along with many other things, inclement weather lead to the cancellation of the Journal Cup. April promises to be a busy month. A number of us will be participating in a day of Café Bridge in Nottingham when we will play in a number of different venues during the day. The Priday Cup takes place on 29th April and is always a popular event.

Explorer Scouts Climb High!
The newly formed 1st Farnsfield Explorers, 14 to 18, has had a busy first six months since they started in the autumn term last year. During February 15 members from Farnsfield took a trip to Clip'n'Climb in Nottingham to enjoy an evening climbing with a twist. Each climbing wall is not conventional as they all have some sort of puzzle element. They spent the evening taking on the sprint climb racing against a friend to the top where Sam, one of the Explorers, got the quickest time that month at the centre. The other challenge was the steps to heaven where they have to climb round stepping stones to about two storeys off the ground then jump off. Sarah, Assistant Leader at the unit said "Climbing the steps to heaven is a real challenge whether you’re a young person or an adult. It was a great sense of achievement when I made it to the top!" Coming up on their programme is Burger night where the young people have to get their culinary thinking caps on and in small teams design, plan, cost and make their own burger shack recipe! After Easter they are taking on a village challenge using their local knowledge to track and find people in a real life game of Hunted. Farnsfield Explorers are looking for new members aged 14 to 18. If you enjoy adventure and want to get involved in something locally then contact Chris for more information on 07779324341 or go to 1stfarnsfield. org.uk/join.

Blidworth Library art club celebrates World Book Day
(Continued from Page 1) Art Club is a voluntary group run by the parents and volunteers who use it, and is hosted by our friends at Blidworth Library. Children of all ages come along, as do their mums, dads and grandparents: everyone joins in, makes art, and has fun together. We welcome new members from the Blidworth local area who want to explore their creativity and love for stories with us. Sessions take place on the first Saturday morning of each month and are free. For more information contact Jon Rea on jonrea@hotmail.com or call Blidworth Library on 01623 793775.
Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Our March meeting on the 6th was also the date of our Annual General Meeting. Chairman Alan Higgins gave a comprehensive overview of the Society's activities over the last year and reported that the Society had received a large number of requests for information from people with connections or interest in the village. He also thanked all of the Society's members and the committee for their support over the previous year. Treasurer Eric Hall confirmed that member’s annual subscription and the cost attending meetings would remain at the past years level of £5 and £2 respectively. Eric confirmed that he had organised a full programme of guest speakers for the coming year and on behalf of the members present he thanked Chairman Alan for the hard work he had given to the Society over the year. As there were no new nominations for the Committee, the present members and post holders agreed to continue for a further year. After the break we were treated to a presentation by Laxton History Group who had received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in support of their project 'A Snapshot in Time, Laxton in Peace and War (1900 - 1920)'. Laxton is unique in that it still retains its open field farming system managed by a court and jury and dating back to the Middle Ages. However, during the years of the study, Laxton underwent a major reorganisation of its 'strip' farming methods and the project uncovered the impact on village life affected by World War 1. In total, seven booklets have been produced that help show and explain how
village life changed during the first twenty years of the last century. Their most enjoyable presentation was in the form of a role play and commentary as told by villagers of the period and performed in costume of the time. They have performed two different versions of the presentation in various situations previously, but they amalgamated them for us and it worked exceptionally well. This particular group had not worked together before and normally would have had five people available so we were a bit of a test bed.
Surgery Lane. In the 1920’s a doctor’s s urgery was held here on one day per week. Dr. Saunders from Hucknall would make the journey to Blidworth It would appear that there were quite a few similarities between life in the village of Laxton and life in Blidworth during those years. In both our villages schools were beginning to become established thanks to local wealthy benefactors. Farming and working on the land were the foremost occupations although in both
our villages, tradesmen were beginning to develop skills to complement each other’s needs and the requirements of local inhabitants. Shortly after the 1918 armistice, and the opening of the colliery, building of a new school and the opening of retail businesses, life for the majority in Blidworth would have become unrecognisable, compared to the rural villages that continued to be reliant upon local wealthy benefactors. Our next three meeting details are as follows; • 3rd April - Bob Massey - Snippets from History - North Notts Tales. •1st May - Michael Harrison - History of Coal Mining. •5th June - Howard Heeley - Stained Glass Aviation Commemoration. The meetings are in the Function Room of the Blidworth Welfare. Doors are open at 6.45 pm. Ample parking is available. New members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is a small charge on the door of £2 to cover refreshments. Our book, 'Blidworth and the First Word War' is into its second printing. It can be purchased from 'Miss Victoria's Shabby Chic Furniture Shop' at 39 Mansfield Road, Blidworth, at a cost of £10, Telephone 07712693966. Keeping busy at Sam’s Workplace Well yet again it’s been an incredibly busy month for us all here at Sam’s Workplace. Following feedback from customers, we have extended our opening hours to 6pm on Thursdays and are now open on Saturdays from 9am to 2pm, so lots of extra hours to come and see us! Still based at 37 Preston Road and still only charging £1 for a bacon cob!! We are also in the process of setting up our card payment machine, so we can accept payment by debit cards - we aim to please! Like everyone else, we were moved by the documentary highlighting the problem of plastic pollution so we have undertaken to reduce our use of plastic bags in the shop. We will be using more paper bags in an attempt to help the environment, and we hope our fantastic customers will help us in our endeavours. We will be looking at possibly reducing costs for those re-using cups - more details later... We had some brilliant fun making all the Mother’s Day cheesecakes - if you didn’t get one it’s not too late - our guys have perfected making them, so get them while you can …. it doesn’t have to be a special occasion just to treat yourself! Wait until you see what we’ve got in store for Easter ….. the cakes will be amazing and we’ll have some new sweets in too!! But you’ll have to come in to see for yourselves! We’ve been busy supporting lots of fantastic community initiatives; we’ve donated one of our amazing chocolate bouquets and a cream tea voucher to the Co-operative Funeral Care for their raffle; we’ve given hampers to both Ellie Pheasant who is a contender for the Miss Mansfield & Sherwood Forest which is being raffled for Guide Dogs as well as to Sarah Windibank who is running the London Landmarks Half Marathon in support of Tommy’s charity. Good luck to both ladies and the Co-op too; we’re glad to have been involved and able to help.
mas lights switch on in Rainworth; well we’re involved with the Angel Hunt which is taking place on 27th March. Local members of the community have been busy making angels which are being placed around the community - if you see an angel anywhere, take it, it is yours to keep or to give to a friend. We have to give a massive shout out and well done to our lovely friend Claire Reynolds who, despite having some family illness, has made an amazing 145
We also need to thank Nottinghamshire Community Foundation Lindhurst Wind Farm Grant team; they have so very kindly donated to us so we can purchase equipment to continue the learning of our guys with sewing, embroidery, and pyrography. We are going to have so much fun!! So on top of all that we still have been working hard on our allotment which is now ready for planting, although we are waiting for some decent weather - is spring really ever going to come? We are also preparing our lovely Teacher Gifts ready for the end of term, which is only 14 weeks after Easter!!! Thank you to all our customers, your loyalty and custom is so important to us - hope to see you at Sam’s Workplace soon!! You can get in touch with us by phone 01623 797240, or email to samsworkplace@mail. com or find out what we’re up to on our Facebook page ….. thank you!
We have been involved with the P.O.P. group formed in the village; you may remember the organisation of the Christ-

Edwinstowe, Bilsthorpe & Farnsfield Local News Happy 75th Birthday 1st Farnsfield Scout Group! 1st Farnsfield Scout Group have begun celebrating 75 years of Scouting in Farnsfield during 2018 with the group having met for the first time on 14th July 1943! The Scout Group was originally joint with Bilsthorpe in 1941 but with a growing population of young people, Farnsfield finally had its own group two years later. The group will be marking this special year of celebration on several occasions throughout this year. It has all began with the young people designing the 75th birthday badge and the Founders Church Service at St. Michael’s Church, on February 25th. The Cubs, Beavers, and Scouts took part in designing the special 75th birthday badge which was then entered into a vote for the best designed badge. George Sissons, age 10, cleverly won the best badge design with the most votes! This was made into a real badge for the group to proudly wear on their uniforms throughout 2018. Well done George!
Later in the year the group are joining 5,000 young people and adults from across Nottinghamshire in a special camp. Over 100 members from the group aswell as Farnsfield Guides will join them to celebrate. If you would like to find out more, please contact Group Scout Leader Chris Blockley, on 07779324341.
Bilsthorpe Garden Club At our Meeting on Wednesday, 21st February, Chairman, Dennis Lewin introduced our speakers, Linda and Ray Heywood from “Echium World”, who had kindly stood in at short notice, in a last-minute change of schedule, and gave us an interesting and informative, illustrated talk on every aspect of the cultivation of echiums, with some stunning, colourful photographs, showing how their garden had progressed. Afterwards, Linda and Ray answered our questions and there was a chance to purchase some young plants. The raffle was drawn with the first prizewinner being
Gillian Hattersley. Our next Meeting will be a talk on the “National Garden Scheme” on Wednesday, 18th April at 7.30 pm in the Lounge at Bilsthorpe Welfare. Visitors are most welcome.
On Monday, 19th February, twenty-one Members and friends visited the National Mining Museum at the former Caphouse Colliery, near Wakefield, where we all had an interesting day, the highlight of which was a guided tour underground with a former miner. Our guide was Ross, who was both informative and entertaining and engaged the children in the party very well. Thanks are due to trip organiser, Alan Ward, for a lovely day out.
Farnsfield Local History Society
(Continued from page 1) Our next meeting will be on 11th April when Paul Mann Q.C. will give a talk about “The Winkburn Murder of 1821”. A traveller was murdered on his way to Kirklington. Visitors and new members are welcome. £3 for visitors, £15 annual membership. As usual we shall be involved with the Scarecrow Festival in Farnsfield on 7th May Bank Holiday. We are planning a visit to St. Ann's Allotments in Nottingham in May and on 5th September a coach trip to Eden Camp in North Yorkshire. Those who have already been have been impressed by the Camp. There is always something new going on and a day is not long enough to see everything. Please www.farnsfieldlhs.co.uk for our programme, photographs and lots more!
Our Members’ Summer Holiday is fast approaching and this year we will be visiting the gardens and places of interest in North Wales from Sunday, 24th June until Saturday, 30th June. If you would like to become a Member and join us for this holiday, ring 01623 – 870810 for further details.

The family of our late, popular Trustee, Frank Jarvis have kindly presented us with a lovely wooden bench, in Frank’s memory, for the outside area of the Museum and also a special rose called “In Loving Memory” for the Memorial Garden and, in addition, some other climbing and floribunda roses. Thank you to all concerned and also to Member, Ron Chaplin for his generous donation of colourful polyanthus plants for the garden, which is finally looking very pretty after Winter with snowdrops, crocus, cyclamen and daffodils blooming. The garden is open for everyone to enjoy.

Thousands raised at sporting fundraiser A group of businessmen helped raise £3,000 for local sportspeople at an annual fundraiser.
The Armchair Club’s Question Of Sportstyle evening at the 1861 Suite, Mansfield Town FC, featured 18 teams from local companies, including Mansfield Town FC, Linney, John Sankey, NatWest, Hopkins Solicitors, H Martin Waste, Alfreton Insurance, Barclays, Edwinstowe Plumbing, Collins Wealth Management, the NewsJournal, Adkins Sinclair, SP Fabrications, The Mortgage Zone, Tyler Bothers and the Mansfield Christmas Lights team. Radio presenter Stewart Nicholson compered the fundraiser, which has been held annually since 1999.
Money raised will be donated to local sportspeople and sports clubs. The quiz, as always a competitive affair, was won by Collins Wealth Management.
Mike Collins and his son, Ben, pictured, led the firm and they are pictured, with their team, enjoying the celebration. The Armchair Club was created more than 35 years ago by a small group of Mansfield businessmen to raise much-needed funds for able-bodied and disabled local sportspeople in need of additional financial support. The unique group has since raised and donated more than £200,000.
A spokesman said: “The success has been achieved through the generosity and support of local people attending fundraising events.
“The objective of the events is to help the club raise funds to be invested back into the local community to give talented young people an opportunity to grow and develop their own sporting abilities.” Grants are available to young sports people and clubs based in Mansfield or Ashfield area. Garden Bird of the Month – Feral Pigeon As we walk through our towns and cities the Feral Pigeon is a familiar sight. Trafalgar Square is particularly well known for its pigeons and many tourists have photos taken with one of these birds resting on their arm. People love to feed them and children love to run after them. Whether you like or loathe them, you have to admit they are very successful birds.
Feral Pigeons are descended from the Rock Dove, a bird which in the wild in the UK, can only be found in the remote north and west of Scotland, the Scottish Isles and coastal areas of Northern Ireland. It is a cliff nesting bird so it is easy to understand why its descendants populate mainly urban areas where there are ample places to nest and roost. Pigeons were first domesticated for food way back in ancient times. They have also been invaluable to man as messenger birds, especially in times of war. If you live in an urban or suburban area, you may well have these birds visit your garden. If so, take time to study them. You will notice that there are a wide variety of patterns and colours in their plumage. They vary from white through to black. Some are a blue-grey colour and some are brown. Some are banded, some are chequered and some are just plain and some are mottled. Such a variety of shades is due to interbreeding with escaped ornamental birds and racing birds. A recent survey found that a pigeon will breed with a pigeon which looks different to itself and this also adds to the variety found in their plumage. It is also genetically sound practice.
The fact that there are Peregrine Falcons in a lot of cities nowadays doesn’t seem to make much difference to pigeon populations. The Peregrine Falcon has quite an eclectic taste in birds and only few feral pigeons are actually picked off. I think one has to admit that these successful birds do add some character to our many concrete cities and towns. Jean Powley
Photo: Jean Powley The success of the Feral Pigeon is down to the ability of them to breed throughout the year. Also, tall buildings, window ledges and the underside of bridges give them good nesting and roosting sites. Of course food is also readily available in urban areas. Their natural food is seed and grain but in towns they will eat discarded chips, pies and other scraps of food. In fact they will eat most foodstuffs which humans throw away on the ground.
Jean is a voluntary Ambassador for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch scheme. If you enjoy watching birds and other wildlife which visit your garden, Garden Birdwatch may be perfect for you. If you would like a free information pack about the scheme, contact Jean at jpbirds@outlook.com or visit www.bto. org/gbw
The density of feral pigeons in urban areas has caused concern with many councils and some will prosecute people who feed them. It is known that the pigeons can cause structural damage to buildings, their fouling poses an aesthetic and public health risk and they can spread disease and parasites. Others say these claims are exaggerated.

Zara has some fabulous choices and I immediately fell in love with their Moroccan style knitwear. The dashing, sparkly, bright colours all caught my eye. The simplicity of the colours and designs will look good when worn. Almost everyone has an irrational fear or two—of spiders for example, flying or visiting the dentist. For most people, these fears are minor but, when fears become so severe that they cause tremendous anxiety and interfere with your normal life, they’re called phobias. The good news is that phobias can be both managed and cured and therapy can help anyone to overcome their fears and start enjoying life again. These are just a few of the type of fears people have: Fear of flying Fear of spiders Fear of heights Fear of closed in spaces Fear of bridges Fear of needles and injections Fear of public speaking Fear of snakes
and minds alert and ready for action. We are therefore able to respond quickly to protect ourselves by either running away or staying to deal with the problem. Phobia – Fears become phobias when the threat is greatly exaggerated or nonexistent. For example, it is only natural to be afraid of a poisonous snake if you are in the jungle, but it is irrational to be terrified of a photograph of a snake in a book or on TV and if that happens it is probably caused by a snake phobia. When people are afraid or anxious they experience a variety of uncomfortable physical symptoms, such as a racing heart, panic and a suffocating or trapped feeling. These physical sensations can be frightening themselves—and a large part of what makes a phobia so distressing. When it comes to treating fears and phobias, therapy is very effective. We use a number of different techniques in our practice and have found over the years that Hypnotherapy coupled with EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) helps the client to combat both fears and phobias within just a few sessions. We also teach our clients
relaxation techniques and breathing exercises which are all powerful antidotes to fears and anxious feelings. Local MP gives thumbs up to ‘safer’ barrier thanks to Woodhead MP for Sherwood, Mark Spencer, has praised Construction Company, Robert Woodhead Ltds response to the Edwinstowe community when they showed concern over the safety of a pedestrian crossing in the North Nottinghamshire village. The crossing connects the car park for the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre to the tourist attraction itself. Woodhead is currently responsible for the build of the fantastic new Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, set to open in 2018. The centre will include information about the legendary tales of Robin Hood, and the local environment and wildlife. Nottinghamshire County Council is working together with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), which heads a partnership to bring this state-of-the-art and impressive building to the local area, in the hope that it will help to inspire and entertain anyone who visits from nearby to further afield. Other partners include The Sherwood Forest Trust, Thoresby Estate, Continuum Attractions and the Woodland Trust. The new centre, based in Forest Corner just outside the village of Edwinstowe, will include a shop and cafe, with a terrace and amphitheatre outside. Plans feature the addition of a brand new play area with a Robin Hood theme. Woodhead installed the new pedestrian barrier to improve safety at the crossing.
Woodheads Project Manager for the scheme, Sue Hunter, said: We were only too happy to help Mark Spencer and the local community with their request. We always aim to do what we can to support the surrounding community and enhance the local environment when were working on any site, so it’s great to be able to have such an impact - and of course the new barrier is a huge benefit and safety measure for the competed visitor centre itself. Mark Spencer, MP for Sherwood added: I am really pleased and would like to thank the team at Woodhead for how they have responded so willingly and quickly to our
request. This crossing was a real concern to the local residents, but now this barrier should make a huge difference to the safety of those visiting this fantastic new centre which will be a great edition to the tourism industry in Nottinghamshire.Ross Frazer, RSPB's project manager for the new visitor centre, said; "I was impressed with the swift and positive way that Woodhead dealt with this concern about safety, which is absolutely paramount to everyone working on this project. For more information about the project, please go to www.visitsherwood.co.uk

Local street warden ‘shines charitable light’ in cape verde A STAFF member at Newark and Sherwood Homes has helped make a big impact to a children’s charity in Africa, following donations from staff at the housing provider. Sarah Sturgeon, a local street warden, visited street children in Cape Verde and joined forces with a local housing project and orphanage during her trip. Ahead of Sarah’s trip, Newark and Sherwood Homes’ team came together to collect various items for Sarah to take with her, which were donated to ‘The Kim Barbosa School’ in Santa Maria. Stationery items such as pens, crayons and notepads were donated, among other much-needed everyday items including toys, clothing, tooth brushes and torches. Sarah said: “It was an amazing life-changing experience and I am so pleased that I was able to visit a vulnerable area like this and make a difference to the community. I am incredibly grateful that my colleagues Newark and Sherwood Homes were able donate so many useful items. The children’s faces ‘literally’ lit up when I gave them the gifts – the torches proved to be the most successful item – the children loved shining them on the walls in dark rooms making shapes. “Making a difference to people and communities is one of my passions in life. The conditions these children were living
in were devastating and it made me realise how lucky and fortunate we are to have access to social housing and everyday needs, such as hot water and electricity.” Sarah has also recently won a Nora Armstrong Community Spirit Award in recognition of determination, tenacity, loyalty and her ability to put tenants at the heart of everything she does. Rebecca Rance, chief executive at Newark and Sherwood Homes, said: “Our staff are

Easter Angels
My, now adult, god-daughter is a little clumsy at times (she once fell through a plate glass window) and we speculate that she must have a guardian angel because she has managed to get to through life largely unscathed! Many people talk of angels in this kind of way. The Bible speaks of angels as messengers of God – an angel tells Mary she will be the mother of Jesus; an angel tells Joseph is told that he should take Mary as his wife and care for her and her child; a host of angels coax a group of shepherds from the hillside into Bethlehem to see the newborn baby. We encounter angels at every turn in Christmas story. But they are also there in the Easter story. Angels are seen in the empty tomb on the first Easter day and tell Jesus’ friends that he has risen from the dead. And of course Jesus’ friends then encounter him for themselves and come to know that the angels’ message is true. Angels point us not to themselves, but to God. This Easter we are showering the villages of Blidworth and Rainworth with angels made with love by people in the communities and in our churches. You might find one hanging on a fence, lamppost or tree or you may see one sitting on a shelf in the shop with the potatoes or magazines. If you do please take it home with you as a sign of God’s love and may it be a reminder of the true joy of Easter.

Car dealer franchise drives skills forward with college Leading motor dealer franchise Pendragon PLC – and Nottinghamshire’s second largest company – is investing in upskilling contact centre operatives through West Nottinghamshire College.
Twelve employees who currently lead teams of contact centre team members, are being put through their paces on a Team Leading and Supervisor Level 3 apprenticeship. The 18-month apprenticeship will be delivered at the Pendragon’s specialist Training Academy on Southwell Road West in Mansfield. Apprentices will work through the various modules designed to strengthen skills in communicating in a business environment, managing personal perform-
ance and development as well as developing working relationships with colleagues. Reece Thompson, 20, from Nottingham, is about to embark on the apprenticeship. He said: “I’ve always been drawn towards working in customer service and this leadership programme will give me more of an insight to be able to perform to the best of my abilities as a team leader as well as looking at how to get the most from my team members.
Jo Moxon, HR director at Pendragon PLC, said: “We are committed to developing our team members and supporting them to progress in their careers. “This apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity for some of our contact centre team members to develop both customer service and leadership skills on the road to becoming our future leaders. I look forward to seeing these team members progress with us.”
“We have many contact centre team members at the Annesley site and it’s important that the group of current team leaders can be as professionally developed as possible to support this team.
Pendragon also has apprentices studying at the college’s Engineering Innovation Centre in Kirkby-in-Ashfield on the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair on a rolling programme.

Let’s talk bowels - Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Irritable Bowel Syndrome or (IBS) as it is commonly known, is a disorder affecting many groups of people, but it’s twice as likely to be women who suffer with it. It’s a common digestive disorder. It’s believed that the symptoms of IBS, such as constipation, bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea etc, may be linked to certain life events or periods of stress, but the true cause is largely unknown. There are several schools of thought when it comes to treating IBS. Medically, the condition focuses on symptom relief, so prescription drugs are often given to reduce the symptoms of IBS such as internal spasms, anti-diarrhoea medications, or laxatives for constipation and sometimes, if it is felt necessary, people may be prescribed anti-depressants. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF IBS AND HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED IBS symptoms can be so debilitating for individuals and may have a real affect on people’s everyday lives. IBS sufferers tend to get a mixture of different symptoms, such as diarrhoea, sometimes with urgency and the need to go to the toilet quickly. Some sufferers may experience constipation and sensations of needing to go to the toilet frequently. Often, people who suffer IBS, do not feel as though they have completely emptied their bowel and they still feel full. Some individuals may experience both constipation then diarrhoea interchangeably. Stools can become mucus like and they can be small and watery. Some experience gas and bloating most of the time. When we see our Doctor, the diagnosis is often based on the symptoms that are presented to them by the patient. Blood samples may be taken if it is felt there may be other underlying conditions. SYMPTOMS THAT MAY BE CONFUSED WITH IBS Sometimes, IBS can be caught up with other symptoms from other digestive condi-
tions and whilst assessing the symptoms of IBS, there may be other causes that underlie the symptoms that are being presented. Some people may have intolerances to certain foods or may have other conditions such as diverticular or coeliac disease, so a series of eliminations have to be done, in order to pinpoint the problem and this of course takes time. WHAT ELSE COULD BE CONSIDERED? When individuals are being investigated for their bowel symptoms, as mentioned, this process can sometimes take time for each area to be investigated and eliminated. So, in the meantime, out of desperation and to ease the discomfort, often people may decide to try and self medicate, to alleviate the symptoms that they are experiencing. Unfortunately, this approach may in turn present their own set of symptoms, for example, anti-diarrhoea medication can cause cramping in itself and regular usage of laxatives for constipation makes the bowel sluggish, so people often become trapped in a situation where by they are not sure what has caused their symptoms, its often a chicken and the egg type of scenario!!
cally and are they negative? Perhaps you could consider a functional or nutritional approach to IBS. Nutritional approaches may take you down the route of establishing if you might be food sensitive or intolerant to certain foods. Functional medicine may look at removing certain reactive foods such as alcohol or sugar, for example and it might be suggested that you try to repair and rebalance the gut with digestive enzymes or live bacteria. It may be a good idea to explore all areas and avenues open to you when trying to live and survive IBS, as the collective symptoms can be devastating for sufferers and for the people around them. I probably fall into the functional category, for treating IBS, although all areas have a role to play. If you would like to know more about IBS, I am always open to enquiries, why not give me a call, I’d love to hear from you! March was mad for the Wrens as the weather took hold It’s been a frustrating month for Rainworth MWFC as the ‘Beast from the East’ and its little brother have hit their fixtures during March. Nevertheless as the month end, and indeed the end of the season, approaches, the Wrens lie in sixth place in the Northern Counties East Premier Division table. February ended with a comfortable 3-0 win in the League Cup third round at Rossington, where goals by man of the match Nathan Modest, Max Pemberton and Charlie Dawes provided their place in the fourth round. That was followed by another 3-0 success in the league at Staveley. Long range shots early and late from Tomas Poole and Kyle Jordan, with a Charlie Dawes penalty in between, saw the Wrens up one place in the table to sixth to end the month. As I write, though, March hasn’t really got going. It began with a postponement of a home game with Pickering Town, who must now make the longest journey in the whole of the NCEL on Tuseday, 27th March. Indeed only one fixture in March has been completed to date, this a home goalless draw against Bridlington Town, making it three clean sheets in a row for keeper Andy Francis, who is standing in for the injured Ben Townsend – Ben’s knee injury, reported last month, looks to have ended his season prematurely. Since then visits to both Worksop Town and Hemsworth MW have also fallen victim to the weather and have been re-arranged for dates in April.
Nathan Modest starred in Rainworth’s League Cup win at Rossington. Still to come in March, we have the League Cup fourth round tie at Parkgate, weather permitting, on Wednesday 21st, a home match with Barnsley-based Athersley Recreation on Saturday 24th, and that re-arranged Pickering fixture on 27th before ending the month on Easter Saturday with the long trip north to Thackley. That will leave Rainworth with six league games to play in April, this not including any further progress in the League Cup, before the league season ends on Saturday 28th. Tuesday 3rd sees the re-arranged visit to
Hemsworth, then on Saturday 7th Parkgate again provide the opposition, but this time at home. On Saturday 14th there is a trip to Hull to face Hall Road Rangers, and the Wrens are on their travels yet again on the following Wednesday, 18th, with a local derby at Worksop Town. Saturday 21st sees the penultimate league fixture, the final one at home this season, and it’s the big local derby against hot championship favourites AFC Mansfield, before the season draws to a close on 28th in the shadow of the Humber Bridge at Barton Town.
