Local Historical Society enjoys Summer Social Members of Farnsfield Local History Society enjoyed a really pleasant evening for their annual Summer Social in the garden of David and Judith Milnes. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, 13th September about The green spaces of Nottinghamshire. the speaker
will be Judith Mills, Research Fellow, Department of History, University of Nottingham. On 11th October Richard Bowler will talk to us about women in the great war. Poem of Mansfield Methodist the Month Museum Church A clock tick tocks its lonesome song Announcing the passage of time The clock breaks, hammer hangs limply Shocked by the savagery of the crime Metal, wood, spokes and gears Lie littered on the floor I've killed time, the clock is dead Without the clock Time's no more The sun cries but I keep the time Great sailors have used me before In vicious fury the hammer flies The sun just laughs in scorn So in a room I sit, no light, no clocks Surely Time cannot still exist Sitting still the mind wanders Nails grow, stomach tumbles and time still goes by Oblivious, unforgiving A law unto itself Time's up Time Stevie - Leigh Townsend

Housing provider calls out for Apprentices in Nottinghamshire HOUSING provider Newark and Sherwood Homes will be hosting a series of pop up recruitment events throughout July, as it searches for talented individuals to fill its apprenticeship positions. The community outreach events will be part of the company’s apprentice scheme, Recruiting and Employing Apprentices Championing Housing Champions (REACH) which was created to highlight the wide choice of careers available in the housing sector. Partnering with Vision College which is Newark and Sherwood Homes’ training provider for the apprenticeship standards, the housing company will be searching for four apprentices to fill the positions which are on offer, including a gas fitter plumber, surveying technician, business administrator and a housing and property management officer. Dara Voice internal capacity coordinator at Newark and Sherwood Homes said: “We are really excited to host recruitment drop ins locally, especially as we have three separate dates and locations making it more accessible for potential candidates to
come along. “On each day, we will be having laptop stations for applications as well as staff from Newark and Sherwood Homes and Vision College who will be on hand to assist with any questions or give application advice. We encourage everyone who is considering a career in the housing sector, whether that it is in the development of new homes, customer service, housing management or repairs and maintenance, to come along and find out more.” The events will take place on three separate dates at different venues. Ambleside Community Centre in Ollerton will be first to host one of the recruitment mornings on July 11, followed by Hawtonville Community Centre on July 12, and Kelham Hall on July 13. The recruitment mornings are open to all from 10am-12pm each day where application forms for the four positions will be available, alongside refreshments and team members from Newark and Sherwood Homes. The recruitment mornings come after a Future First Expo was held last month at Newark Showground, where the housing
Homeowners craving some interior design inspiration for the summer can discover the hottest new looks thanks to a collection of top tips from Taylor Wimpey. The leading housebuilder works with expert interior designers to ensure the very latest styles are displayed in its showhomes throughout the UK – and among the on-trend features for summer 2017 are solid wood flooring and vibrant greenery to achieve that botanical look. Homeowners can take inspiration from the following top tips to give their place a sizzling summer makeover: •Solid wood flooring is in! Many people are opting for bolder flooring in 2017, and ontrend shades such as blonde and pecan are perfect for the summer as they lighten any room. As well as looking stylish, they can also make rooms appear more spacious. •Brits just love bringing the outdoors in, and adding a dash of greenery can work wonders in bringing a room to life and achieving that in-vogue botanical look. Whether its fabrics, accessories, wallpaper or even adding a feature plant in the bathroom, incorporating greenery is the way to go – so step into summer by bringing out the horticulturalist in you! •Striking patterns are making waves right now, with many interior stylists finding that people are wanting more daring, artistic shapes on their floors and walls. Geometric, angular patterns make a real statement and add lots of character to any room. •Matching two blocks of colour in a kitchen/dining room creates an appealing decorative contrast that draws the eye.
Why not try contrasting wall colours with kitchen cabinets to try out this contemporary trend? •Less is more – with open-plan living areas, the modern look is to choose light colours and materials that blend together for a clean and seamless effect. Pared-back schemes and simple styling make for a relaxed, welcoming space. •Make your garden a more enticing place to be by adding strategic lighting to enhance features such as trees, rockery or plant borders. Fairy lights or Moroccan-style lanterns provide a soft, warm glow as the sun sets. Rob Curry, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, says: “Summer is the ideal time to inject a fresh look into your home and garden, and our on-trend design tips can help you wow the family and friends when hosting a barbecue. “All these styles can be incorporated into an existing neutral scheme, thanks to widely available accessories, furniture, wallpaper, flooring and fabrics. “And if you want some further design inspiration, you can always pop in and visit a showhome at one of our developments for more ideas on how to transform your home.” Taylor Wimpey East Midlands are currently building high-quality new homes at the following developments across Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire: LEICESTERSHIRE Grangewood Manor, Leicester Forest East - 01163 660530 Liberty Gardens, Syston - 01163 669722

Strong demand for a range of property styles and prices in and around the Mansfield area Melissa Field of local independent estate agency Need2View Property Services trading from Albert Street in Mansfield commented that demand for property locally is high even taking into account the seasonal upturn expected at this time of year. The number of sales agreed at this time of year is the highest it has been since they opened with the most popular price range being £100,000 - £200,000. Properties priced either side of this bracket are also enjoying good levels of activity. As they approach the second quarter end Need2View report to have had a bumper period exceeding all their expectations. This is despite the general election and continuing political uncertainty. It seems to be that irrespective of outside influences, it is very much business as usual for the Mansfield property market. They had wondered whether Brexit would have a detrimental effect however, confidence would appear to be high; as long as sellers have a realistic expectation and are prepared to be flexible in negotiations, then Need2View are agreeing sales. In fact, currently 50% of their overall stock level is sold and they are keen to replace this stock to satisfy demand. If therefore, you would like a market appraisal at no charge and without any obligation
then Melissa and the team at Need2View would be very pleased to hear from you. It is very important to get a local view on your property since the overall national trend is too vague and to consider media reporting commenting on a downturn in prices for example in London and the South East, really has little or no bearing on Mansfield and the surrounding area. Melissa is a member of the local business group Mansfield & Ashfield 2020 and from the meetings she attends believes there is a very positive vibe about local employment in the area. Whilst ever employment is strong and mortgage interest rates remain at their lowest levels for many years, there is continuing optimism for the remainder of the year. If people are considering moving but would like to have a mortgage financial health check to determine their borrowing capability then this is something that can be arranged by Need2View. Clients can be given access to independent whole of market mortgage advise so again, if anyone would like to arrange an appointment, please get in touch with Melissa and the team. Neede2View have regular contact with many local firms of solicitors whose conveyancing departments are also benefit-
ing from the upturn in business. Melissa reports that having a good relationship with local solicitors helps them to smooth the path during what can be a stressful and anxious time. They offer the whole package; from pre-sale advice, property preparation and detailed market appraisal through to personalised customer service orientated sales marketing and post-sale progression updates. They focus on client communication throughout the whole sales process. Should you be looking to move home then Melissa at Need2View would love to hear from you. Contact her now on 01623 422000 or email mansfield@need2view.co.uk.
It can be very dry and warm in August and it is important that you keep your bird baths toped up. It is also the month for thunder stores and one should not be fooled into thinking that because we have had a drop of rain all of your baskets and planted containers are watered! The problem is the foliage canopy is often so thick over the container rain water cannot get through; so continue to water daily and feed once a fortnight with a soluble plant food. You can start feeding your lawn with an autumn lawn food, this has a high potassium content and will slow the growth down and also help protect the grass from frost damage in winter. Feed your Rhubarb with tomato food to help build up a strong crown for cropping next year. You should have stopped harvesting the stems by now as the build-up of oxalic acid makes them very sour. Never eat Rhubarb leaves as these are very poisonous. It’s time to think about spring bulbs which will be arriving in the garden centres about now. You can also buy on line and via the good old fashioned catalogues, which I enjoy reading very much. I have used a
company called Parkers of Manchester who wholesale and retail bulbs. If you contact them they will post you out a catalogue. sales@jparkers.co.uk I have found them to be good value, good quality and very reliable. Divide Germanic or bearded iris now and replant with a reduced fan of foliage so that the plants can get established before winter without been blown over. Continue to dead head bedding plants and perennials to encourage more flowering. Trim Lobelia in baskets and containers with a pair of Scissors if they have stopped flowering, they will look scruffy for a week or so but will then flower again. Make sure your watering of tomato plants is consistent and you do not let them dry out at any stage. If you do the skin of the fruit will harden and split when you water them next. Get the Dutch hoe out in the vegetable garden and around the rose beds to remove any weeds that are competing for nutrients and moister. Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering like Escallonia and Philadelphus to encourage new growth and better flowering
next year. On a health and safety note, soak your charcoal in lighter fluid before you use it; never spray lighter fluid on to a lit BBQ. Enjoy your gardening Brian Reece Chartered Horticulturalist.
In the Garden in August If you have any gardening questions that you can’t quite get your head around, email btreece@ntlworld.com and Brian will answer your questions in the next issue of The Sherwood. Make sure you pick up next months copy to see if your question has been answered!

Pathfinders - What is Self Care?
In May we launched ‘PATHFINDERS’ for people wanting to know more about cancer, get support and to have somewhere to get advice, information and signposting. Now as part of this centre, which meets monthly at Blidworth Library (More information in this newsletter) we offer the expert advice of a adviser from the ‘SELF CARE HUB’. So at `PATHFINDERS’, we want people in Blidworth, Rainworth & Ravenshead to know they can drop in at the centre and get advice about support about other conditions as well as cancer. Or if you need help with a problem, housing problem, getting care for someone, financial problems etc. Drop in and see if Pauline from The Hub can help you! You may wonder what is `Self Care’ - It is all about empowering people with the confidence and information to look after themselves when they can, and visit health and care professionals when they need to. There are various levels of self-care –
from carrying out exercise and adopting a healthy lifestyle, to participation in selfhelp groups. By enabling people to actively manage their conditions, it will prevent those conditions escalating from something manageable, to a point of crisis. The Self Care Hub is established in mid-Nottinghamshire to help patients, professionals and the public to access self-care advice, information and support. The Hub is run by Self Help UK and commissioned by Mansfield and Ashfield CCG and Newark and Sherwood CCG. We are here for individuals wanting to know more about their long term health condition; how to better self manage their health and wellbeing, and how they can be supported to make healthy lifestyle choices. We can also help with the wider detriments to good health; such as money worries, benefits advice, housing problems and social isolation.

Patient now has services on her doorstep thanks to new treatments at Newark Patients based in Newark are now able to access treatments closer to home thanks to the expansion of day case services at Newark Hospital. New services have been added to Newark Hospital’s day case unit (Minster Ward) as part of the Newark Hospital strategy to increase the scope of services and improve local use of the hospital. New procedures introduced at the unit include referrals from the Urgent Care Centre, also on the Newark Hospital site, for patients who need to be monitored by nurses and reviewed by doctors for suspected deep vein thrombosis, accidental overdose, mechanical falls and anaemia, along with outpatient care for conditions such as cellulitis (a serious skin infection), ulcerative colitis (inflammatory bowel disease) and arthritis. The changes have made a huge difference to one patient, who has been travelling 48 miles every week for the last six years to receive treatment for her rheumatoid arthritis. Newark resident, Lynn Chapman, now only has to travel 10 minutes to her appointments to get the weekly medication injection that she needs to help reduce her symptoms. Lynn has to have the disease-modifying anti-rheumatic (DMARD) drug called Methotrexate. Due to the nature of the drug, it can only be given by specially trained nurses. Two nurses have now been trained to give the medication at Newark Hospital, with plans to train the rest of the team, meaning that the service has been permanently added to the procedures that the day case unit offers. Lynn said: “I used to get picked up in the morning by the hospital transport and often didn’t get home until late afternoon.
It was a 45 minute journey to get there and sometimes I had to wait to get taken back, so it could take a whole morning just to receive a 5 minute injection. It makes a huge difference to be able to have the injection here at Newark, as it only takes me 10 minutes to get here and get back home again. “I used to dread the long journey every week as I don’t like travelling, so getting the treatment at Newark really is brilliant.” Ward Sister for Minster Ward, Denise Davies said: “If we make it easier for just one patient to receive treatment more locally to them, then it is worth us expanding the service. We have worked really hard to provide more services at Minster Ward, it can be quite a lengthy process getting all the right procedures and training in place,
but we are dedicated to providing as many services as possible to benefit our patients.” Assistant Chief Operating Officer for Newark Hospital, Ant Rosevear added: “This is just one example of how we are expanding our services and making things better and easier for the patients of Newark. Being able to come to your local hospital for treatments such as this obviously makes a huge difference. We are really pleased that we are able to offer this service, which has been made possible by expanding the clinical skills of our nurses through training and development.” Between October 2016 and May 2017 the day case unit has seen around 800 medical day case patients, a number which is expected to increase even further over time as services expand.

A Summer trip to Umbria, Italy We are enjoying the hot summer season. Some of you may have already gone on holiday or you will be going away soon. I have just come back from my holiday in Umbria, the central mountainous region of Italy. I had a splendid time walking around the Piazzas, the cool Alleyways with oodles of character, the Cathedrals and in general soaking up the summer heat. Umbria is off the beaten track frequented by the tourists. What I found attractive about Umbria is that there were lots of Artisan Boutiques. The designs of jewellery, clothes and items made of leather caught my eyes. When I visited a couple of clothing boutiques, the
inspiration behind the clothes designed by them reminded me of what I had previously made. And It was good to see that some other designers shared my vision! . •How you can wear one garment in six different ways •Hand embroidery on casual, smart Summer clothing Leather is so common in Italy, I came across one boutique where the leather is used extensively to create accessory pieces in a tasteful manner. No wonder Italians are justifiably known for their design flair! Here is a pair of leather Earrings I bought

Attempting to lose weight can be a long, boring and a very challenging journey and if you’ve tried to lose weight by dieting before then I’m sure you’ll remember how frustrating it can be. Sometimes people get into a cycle of dieting, losing some weight, overeating, feeling guilty and then dieting again. This is known as ‘yo-yo dieting’. When you ‘diet’ you are constantly telling yourself “I can’t eat that” or “I want to eat that but I shouldn’t” and it makes the diet difficult to sustain and often leads to failure. There’s no doubt that you can lose weight by following a strict diet but the chances are, if you haven’t changed your mindset around food then you’ll probably put it all back on again and usually more besides. By using Hypnotherapy you can change the way you think and feel about what you eat, so instead of craving chocolate cake you’re more than happy to eat a healthy alternative. That might be hard for you to imagine at the moment – a world where you would happily turn down your favourite food for something healthier but with the techniques we use you can change your thinking patterns and gain control over cravings in a way that will help you to feel really good about yourself. Our five week Weight Management Programme will help you to lose weight healthily and responsibly and not only that but by targeting the subconscious mind with powerful suggestions you will develop a positive relationship with food and exercise. Nottinghamshire Youth Parliament members crusading for young people Encouraging more opportunities for young people in local communities and highlighting mental health issues are just some of the shared interests of group members.
Almost 10,000 votes were cast for 49 candidates across Nottinghamshire this year. They met Nottinghamshire County Council Leader Councillor Kay Cutts, and previous Youth Parliament members on Saturday (July8) at County Hall, in Loughborough Road, West Bridgford. Councillor Cutts said: “Many congratulations to everyone who has been elected – they can be rightly proud of this significant achievement. We wish them every success as they begin their important work to represent young people in our neighbourhoods and local communities.” The county council's youth service will support the team during their two year term in office. The elected members for Nottinghamshire are: • Ashfield district: Aisha Shamsaldeen • Bassetlaw district: Kirk Marriott • Broxtowe district: Ranea Saad • Gedling district: Florence Orchard – re-elected from last term • Mansfield district: Sophie Whitby • Newark and Sherwood district: Sikander Khan • Rushcliffe district: Sami Ayoub – re-elected from last term • Pioneers: Chandler Wilson, representing young people with disabilities – re-elected from last term. • Looked after children: Darren Yem • Chairman of the Children’s Young People Board: Jack Heald. Nationally, the UK Youth Parliament has 600 elected MYPs (Members of Youth Parliament) aged 11 to 18. MYPs are elected in youth elections throughout the UK. Any young person aged 11 to 18 can stand or vote. In the past two years, one million young people have voted in UK Youth Parliament elections. A key area of work for all members of Youth Parliament will be the 'Make Your Mark' campaign - a ballot formed by the UK Youth Parliament for young people to highlight important issues and topics - which then form the basis for national
campaigns.
ing more young people about politics."
Make Your Mark is the largest consultation of young people in the UK. Every 11-18 year old in the UK is eligible to vote in MYM. Last year Nottinghamshire’s members of Youth Parliament supported over 12,000 young people in having a say on the things that matter to young people.
Ranea Saad, 16, from Stapleford, said: "I campaigned for promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy food choices among young people, highlighting discrimination and raising awareness of mental health issues. I am looking forward to helping other young people."
The teenagers are excited about their new role. Jack Heald, aged 15, from Kirton, is a student at Dukeries Academy and said: "I'm interested in politics and am very pleased to be involved. I am keen to promote the positive image of young people and increase youth participation at events in local communities through publicity and other activities."
Sophie Whitby, 13, from Mansfield Woodhouse, attends My Place young people's centre in Mansfield and said: "I am keen to promote equality for groups such as the LGBT community and I cannot wait to put my ideas into practice."
Jack is particularly keen to see more young people attend District Youth Forums in local communities and he attends a monthly session in Hawtonville in Newark. Sikander Khan, 17, from Kirklington, is looking forward to promoting the Make Your Mark campaign and said: "I want to challenge the negative stigma around mental health issues and reduce bullying of all types, as well as encouraging and educat-
Sami Ayoub, 16, is from Beeston, and attends Nottingham Emmanuel School and will soon be studying at The Beckett School. He said: “I am very pleased to be re-elected and aim to use the skills and knowledge I gained from last time – politics is one of my hobbies and I am looking forward to the next two years.”

Garden Bird of the Month The Chaffinch The Chaffinch, as the name suggests, is a member of the finch family and is one of our commonest breeding birds, although this spring, there has been a marked decline of this bird in our gardens and in the wider countryside. The species is known as the ‘bachelor’ bird because during the winter months, the males are often found in large flocks. The name Chaffinch refers to its habit of flocking in fields of stubble to obtain the chaff left over from harvesting. British Chaffinches are mainly sedentary birds and during their life will stay within 5km of where they originated. In winter, they are joined by many migrants from Scandinavia. The species is found all year round over most of the UK in woodlands, hedgerows, fields, parks and gardens. The male of the species during breeding time is particularly attractive and is easily recognised by its pink breast and cheeks and slate-blue crown and nape. It has a chestnut coloured back, a green rump and white wing bars which easily show up when it is in flight. The female is duller and has an olive-brown
back and buff-white underparts. She also has a green rump and white wing bars. You are more likely to see the Chaffinch hopping about on the ground, especially underneath feeders. Although I have seen Chaffinches at my hanging feeders, they do seem to have difficulty settling on them. Jean Powley Jean is a voluntary Ambassador for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch scheme in Nottinghamshire. If you enjoy watching birds and other wildlife which visit your garden, Garden BirdWatch may be perfect for you. If you would like a free information pack about the scheme, contact Jean at jpbirds@outlook.com or visit www.bto.org/gbw

NEW: Echoes of the Empire Fascinating 19-night tour to discover heritage of the British Raj as India celebrates 70 years of Independence Saga has created a 19-night tour, with 15 excursions, to reveal the true heritage of the British Raj, crossing the country from Calcutta to Bombay. The well-paced tour starts with threenight stay at Lalit Great Eastern (4Q+) in the heart of 'Old Calcutta' with visits to Dalhousie Square and the Indo-Gothic St Paul's Cathedral. On a different side of the city, there’s also a call to the Mother House, where the humanitarian Mother Teresa lived and worked, followed by an evening cruise on Hooghly River to see ghats and landmarks from the days of the Raj. An early morning tour of the flower market and visits to the Victoria Memorial and Fort William, built by Robert Clive, are also on the itinerary. The tour continues with an internal flight to Bagdogra, for a three-night stay at the Mayfair Resort (4Q). It was here, a picturesque hill station, that the British decamped to escape Calcutta's summer heat. Guests take a ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and chug slowly to Ghoom to visit the Tibetan monastery and, later,
the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park. A tea plantation visit, to learn all about regional tea production, is followed by a call to the Tibetan Self Help Centre to see traditional Tibetan handicrafts before an internal flight to Lucknow, via Delhi. During a two-night stay at the Lebua Lucknow (4Q), Lucknow's fascinating past is revealed on a sightseeing tour including the Turkish Gate, the spires of Bara Imambara and the British Raj residency, site of the 1857 Indian Mutiny. Sampling Awadhi cuisine at dinner with a member of the Nawab dynasty is also on the schedule! Next is a train journey to Agra, with a twonight stay at the Radisson Hotel (4Q), for a visit to the Taj Mahal at sunrise and the 16th century Agra Fort. After a drive to Delhi, for a three-night stay at Le Meridien (4Q), there’s leisure time to explore the city that was designated the British imperial capital in 1911 and developed by the British architect Edwin Lutyens. A tour to discover Lutyens’ work and the Presidential Residence is followed by an evening talk on the British Raj. Guests can also join a sightseeing tour of Old Delhi; taking in the Raj Ghat, where
Mahatma Gandhi’s mortal remains were cremated, and the Jama Masjid – India’s largest mosque. The next stage of the journey is to Kalka, where guests jump on the Himalayan Toy Train to travel through the Shivalik ranges to Shimla for a three-night stay at the Oberoi Cecil (4Q). In 1863, Shimla replaced Darjeeling as the summer capital of the Raj. Guests take a walk through the heritage zone and visit the former summer residence of the Viceroys of India. After an internal flight to Mumbai, a twonight stay at the Trident Nariman Point (4Q) features a cruise to Elephanta Island to see the 5th century cave temples. There’s also a heritage walk around the Fort Mumbai area, including the UNESCO-listed Victoria terminus and the Gothic glories of Mumbai University. To relax after such a fascinating tour, guests can opt for a five-night half-board extension at The Zuri White Sands, Goa Resort and Casino (4Q) in southern Goa. The extension is available in 2018 with price on application. For details call free on 0800 056 0464 or visit saga.co.uk/india

Do something worthwhile – and have fun doing it! Girlguiding is growing all over the Mansfield area – but needs more adult volunteers to help it grow even more!
Figures just released by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire show that, despite a new Rainbow unit having opened in Mansfield in April, there are still about 40 local girls aged between 5 and 7 who are waiting for a place. That’s enough to fill several more units: the only thing missing at the moment is the volunteers to run them.
Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is a big supporter of ‘flexible guiding’: units can be run on a job-share basis, for instance, and there are plenty of supporting and non-uniformed roles for volunteers offering help just as and when needed. The time and frequency of unit meetings can even be organised around other commitments, with Mansfield pioneering this approach by being one of the first divisions in the UK to open up a Saturdays-only Rainbow unit. Plans for new units to run during school holiday
periods are also being considered.
To talk to Sarah Clarkson about helping Guiding to grow in Mansfield, Blidworth and Rainworth, e-mail sarah.clarkson@ care4free.net Enquiries about volunteering with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire across the county are always welcome: explore www. girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk to find out more.
Add to that the girls aged 7-10 who want to join Brownies, and the 10-to-teens who are waiting to join Guides, and the scale of the issue hits home. ‘Adults find that joining us is a positive move in so many ways, and I can honestly say that grown-ups in Girlguiding have as much fun as the girls!’ says Sarah Clarkson, who, as Division Commissioner for Mansfield and Leader of 3rd Rainworth Brownies, is inviting would-be volunteers to get in touch with her to find out more. ‘Whether helping to set up new units or supporting existing ones, all our volunteers are given full training and mentoring which both add up to invaluable experience and facilitate the development of some really useful transferable skills,’ Sarah continues. ‘Then there’s the social side! Being a member of Girlguiding creates so many opportunities to meet people and make new friends. And, of course, you just can’t beat the excitement of helping young people to make the most of life.’
The place to be this Summer As the summer is coming to an end, we are looking at our allotment and looking at the produce that we have grown this year, some have fared better than others - we really struggled with beetroot this year, but our pumpkins are (hopefully) going to be enormous. We are always grateful to everyone for their interest as they walk by, the lovely people that take their time to stop and have a chat with our guys (who are always happy to stop working for good chinwag) and for donations of plants, pots and advice. Blidworth Parish Council have been so supportive to us and we are extremely grateful to them. We have also been so lucky to have been given 3 new guinea pigs and a baby rabbit which our users are spoiling thoroughly they are Bob the rabbit, Percy, Larry and Pig the guinea pigs. We still have the
lovely Peter Rabbit who still enjoys his walks on the lead around the allotment, and we are getting much better at keeping him off the vegetables.
We are looking at topping up our chicken flock as our current birds are nearing the end of their laying life. They will, of course, remain with us until their natural end and be spoilt rotten by our young adults. However if anyone has any chickens who they wish to rehome, please contact us as we will be able to offer them a loving home. Our cafe continues to offer a wide range of low priced food; our bacon cobs at £1 each are ever popular, but our brownie with ice cream, chocolate sauce and cream - available in small for 50p or large for £1 is now easily our best seller … why not pop in and treat yourself? Or go for it with a mini fry - at only £3.50 you can’t go wrong!
There is always a range of fresh home baked cakes, biscuits or chocolate bars available. We will be holding our MacMillan Coffee Morning soon - look for updates on our Facebook page, as we are hoping to raise as much as possible for this fantastic cause. We are also hoping to become a HOT (Healthy Options Takeaway) - this is a work in progress for us - so watch this space.
We continue to make our blue rainbow cupcakes to support the R.A.I.D. team, and are selling blue and yellow biscuits to help fund the pantomime trip for local pupils attending Lake View School. Please please come in and support our local community, you will receive a very warm welcome from all our young adults. Hope to see you soon!

Blidworth Local News
Blidworth Parish Council We kicked July off with a visit from the East Midlands in Bloom judges on Friday 7th July. Our Village is looking fantastic following the hard work of Christine Dabbs and her volunteers who have worked tirelessly weeding, planting and watering. We hope we impressed them enough to scoop an award but we will have to wait a few months to find out. I hope many of you had chance to look at our Well Dressing - the flowers were kindly donated by Petals and Plantstyle on Burma Road. The central picture had been drawn by a pupil from Blidworth Oaks Primary School and children and volunteers had helped make the finished creation of flowers. Thank you to all the wonderful helpers including Scouts, cubs, Brownies, army cadets and Sam’s Workplace.
I’m also delighted to tell you that Blidworth is through to the second round of the ‘Best Kept Village Competition 2017’ so watch this space! Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society
Our speaker for our July meeting was Kevin Winter. Kevin is a curator at the Newark Civil War Centre and who better than him to tell us about the last significant battle of the 'War of the Roses' that was fought just a few miles south of Newark near the Fosse Way at East Stoke. The battle of Stoke Field was fought on the morning of 16th June 1487 between the Lancastrians led by Henry VII, King of England and the House of York. This battle is thought to have been a bigger battle than that of Bosworth Field, where Richard III was killed a couple of years earlier and with much greater casualties. Kevin said that the battle raged for three hours and that although the 'Yorkists' were supported by German and Swiss mercenaries with the latest handguns, the traditional archers of the Lancastrians were able to shoot arrow after arrow very quickly. Being hemmed in by the River Trent on three sides the Yorkists could not retreat unless they ran down what became known as the 'Bloody Gutter' and tried to swim across the river - it is understood that many drowned in their attempts to escape. It is chronicled that the dead were 'filled with arrows like hedgehogs'. King Henry marked his victory by raising his standard on the battlefield at 'Burnham Furlong' and the spot is now marked by a large stone. Kevin said that the 'Battlefield Trust' charity, of which he is a member, along with the County Council, hopes to be able to develop interest in the site and make it more accessible to the general public. The Chairman, Alan Higgins, thanked Kevin for a most interesting presentation. Following the refreshment break our Chairman showed the remainder of the film featuring pictures of old Mansfield. Always a popular topic with our members and guests. Our next three meeting details are as follows; 1st August - Peter Hammond - 'Well Well Well'. Peter's presentation will be about the caves and wells of Nottingham - their usage and what was found there. 5th Sept - Peter Liddle – 'The Death and Burial of Richard III' 4th October - Bob Massey - 'Nottingham on Sea' The meetings are in the Function Room of the Blidworth Welfare. Doors are open at 6.45 pm. Ample parking is available. New members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is a small charge on the door of £2 to cover refreshments. We are pleased to announce that the Society's book on Blidworth & World War 1 has been reprinted and will be on sale at future meetings, through our website also via ebay. We would like to see any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy and add to our extensive archive. If you would like more information please contact us through our website. You are also invited to submit articles relating to our local history for consideration for publication on our website. Please refer to the website for further details. We look forward to hearing from you. www.blidworthhistoricalsociety.co.uk Email: blidworthhistory@virginmedia.com

Edwinstowe, Bilsthorpe & Farnsfield Local News Farnsfield Youngsters Decide Grant's Future Farnsfield young people have been deciding the future of their scout group as part of a recent £100,000 grant scheme set up by Nottinghamshire Scouts to look at improving scouting venues and headquarters. The Great Places for Great Scouting scheme is administered by young people in partnership with adult volunteers and is issuing grants ranging from £250 to £5,000.
1st Farnsfield Scouts (aged 10½ to 14) were tasked with the challenge of deciding what they could improve in their headquarters and with recent growth at the group, the storage was an obvious problem. The scouts designed how they could improve the group's storage cupboards. Currently the equipment serves over 100 members each week; is kept over two locations and in three storage rooms. The designs from the Scouts have meant the three areas can be consolidated down to two and all be in our weekly headquarters. Jordan Phillips, Nottinghamshire Scouts
Youth Commissioner, presented the cheque £250 to the young people at the groups recent annual review.
All the young people, adults and supporters at 1st Farnsfield Scout Group would like to thank the Nottinghamshire Scouts for their contribution to continue scouting in Farnsfield.
Farnsfield Cubs busy building Giant Bug B&B The Scout Group is heading into its summer break now where we can all take a holiday from the adventures of Scouting.
All sections have continued to have a busy summer terms programme. Our Cub section, ages 8 to 10½, have recently been doing their DIY badge. As part of this they took a trip to the Farnsfield allotments where they built a giant bug B&B from pallets, bricks, bamboo and plants. The Scout section, age 10½ to 14, have been on a visit to Clip'n'Climb in Nottingham where they enjoyed an evening of climbing different puzzle walls including the leap of faith! Our Beaver sections have been building dens, completing sports badges and also Go-Karting at our local scout campsite in Calverton. In the last month of term we’ve been celebrating our achievements with our annual review. This is where the young people of the group receive awards for their achievements plus recognition for our adult volunteers. This year was no different to usual with 50 adults and young people squeezing into our village centre room to celebrate our successes! At this years review we had a special presentation to our outgoing District Commissioner, Steven Tupper, who has spent five years supporting Farnsfield Scouting and 1,400 other young people in the district. We are always looking for new members
and adult support. Do you enjoy fundraising? Can you manage our camping kit? Please contact Chris Blockley on 07779324341 or email join@1stfarnsfield. org.uk if you can help.

Another busy few weeks On Thursday, 15th June, two Members attended a “Visit Nottingham” tourism conference at the East Midlands Conference Centre on Nottingham University Campus. A big thankyou to everyone who supported our stall at Bilsthorpe Scouts’ Tea Party on Saturday, 17th June. On Monday, 19th June, we were pleased to welcome a very well-behaved and interested class from Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy, who wanted to know all about the history of our village and on Tuesday, 4th July, we enjoyed the first of a series of visits from the Hucknall Tourist Regeneration organisation. We were pleased to participate in the Flower Festival at St. Margaret’s Church, Bilsthorpe on 8th/9th July, with a small exhibition of Museum artefacts and pictures and some flowers from our Memorial Garden. We also enjoyed attending the lovely service there on Sunday morning. It was a gloriously sunny weekend and the event was a great success, with lots of hard work from the members of the Church. On Friday, August 18th, we shall be opening the Museum specially to commemorate the disaster at Bilsthorpe Colliery on that date. Refreshments will be available to all our visitors. We have been delighted to recently be informed that our Museum has attained “Accreditation Status”. This is a huge step forward for us, especially as we are all volunteers and is largely due to the tireless work towards this achievement by our Archivist and Funding Officer, Andrea Swallow. On Saturday, 26th August, we shall be holding a Tabletop Sale in the Village Hall, Cross Street from 10.00 am until 12.00 noon (stallholders may set-up from 8.00 am onwards). Admission is 25p and will include light refreshments. Regret all tables have now been taken. Also on Saturday, 26th, Sunday 27th and Monday 28th August, we shall be having an exhibition stand at Bothamsall Show and on Saturday, 2nd September, we shall be participating in Langwith Show. Do come and visit us at these events.

Newark’s William Ghent House Brews up support for Marie Curie NEWARK and Sherwood Homes tenants came together to raise over £190 for terminal illness charity Marie Curie during two coffee and cake mornings. The most recent coffee and cake event, held at Balderton-based centre William Ghent House, was hosted by the housing provider’s tenant forum, a group of tenants who help to shape Newark and Sherwood Homes’ services and raised over £100. A similar event in March raised £90 for the charity. During the coffee morning tenants had an opportunity to meet other people, eat cake and raise awareness of Marie Curie’s charitable work. Ginette Hardy, chair of the tenant forum, said: “We always want to find new ways
to bring the local community together and support causes close to our members’ hearts – so this coffee morning worked perfectly! “This event took place just before the tenant’s forum meeting at William Ghent House, which we host on a quarterly-basis to keep an open dialogue between tenants and Newark and Sherwood Homes. We were really pleased with how the event went and we are planning on hosting another coffee morning in September.” Newark and Sherwood Homes has a strong culture of involving tenants in shaping its services and has a range of mechanisms in place which allow tenants to get involved in how it delivers its services.

Bilsthorpe Garden Club What’s on in On Wednesday, 21st June, Members enjoyed an evening visit to the “Manor House” and “Norwood Cottage”, East Markham, which were two lovely gardens with tea and home-baked cakes provided. The “Manor House” was situated with the village church as a magnificent backdrop on one side and wonderful views on the other. “Norwood Cottage” had a series of interesting courtyard gardens with unusual foliage, cosy seating areas and pretty climbing plants. Thanks are due to the owners of the properties for their hospitality and to Member, Pat Jones, who organised the visit. On Sunday, 25th June, twenty Members set off for our Annual Summer Holiday. Based at the comfortable Gainsborough House Hotel in Kidderminster, we visited gardens and stately homes in the West Midlands and Cotswolds, including several National Trust estates (many of which had strong connections with the Gunpowder Plot and contained ingenious “Priest Hides”), Pershore Horticultural College for a tour of the campus with a talk on the past and present work there, David Austin Roses for a tour and talk and several private N.G.S. gardens, enjoying lots of tea and cakes along the way. On our “free
day”, many of us explored the local area on the Severn Valley Railway. Alan Ashley was, once again, our holiday organiser and a well-deserved vote-of-thanks was given to him by Vice-chairman, Ian Roberts. Alan was assisted by Margaret Wright and our transport was provided by Kettlewells of Retford. It is hoped that our 2018 holiday may possibly be in North Wales. On the weekend of 8th/9th July, we participated in the “Flower Festival” at St. Margaret’s Church, Bilsthorpe. Member, Sandra Fleet, assisted by Jean Manning, created a beautiful arrangement for the entrance porch of the church. On Wednesday, 16th August, we shall be holding our Annual General Meeting & Social Evening at 7.30 pm in the Lounge at Bilsthorpe Miners’ Welfare. New Members are welcome. On Sunday, 3rd September, we shall be holding our 20th Annual Show at Bilsthorpe Village Hall, Cross Street. The Show will be open to the public from 2.15 pm. Awards will be presented at 3.0 pm, after which there will be an auction of produce, followed by the raffle draw.

Are you struggling with sleep? Having a sleepless night can be so disruptive to our lives, it alters our immune system and we feel generally lethargic. Basically, we need to have a good quality of sleep to re-charge our batteries. Sleep is as essential to us as food, air and water. Sometime in your life you may have difficulty sleeping - many people do Anyone can suffer from insomnia, although sleeping problems are more common among women (especially menopausal), the ill, the elderly, smokers, and alcoholics. Sleep problems are, however, surprisingly common among young people. While it is not an illness and is in no way life-threatening, insomnia can be very distressing, frustrating, exhausting, depressing and at worst it can make you feel like you're going crazy. If you have been suffering from insomnia for some time you may be depressed. Signs to look out for are: •waking in the middle of the night or early morning and unable to get back to sleep •loss of interest, energy and appetite •aggression and anti-social behaviour •aches and pains that have no physical explanation There’s a great deal you can do about this problem and Hypnotherapy is one
of the finest ways to beat it. Your subconscious mind helps your body function and regulates your automatic behaviours. Hypnotherapy can help access this part of your mind through deep relaxation and visualization techniques and this will help you to develop a regular sleeping pattern. Part of our treatment is to give the client a relaxing Hypnotherapy CD to listen to when they are in bed, just before you are

Youth Zone R.E.A.L. Learning with Functional Snooker Fun 37
Send your news and photos to chloe@news-journal.co.uk
R.E.A.L. Education’s patron and World snooker champion Shaun Murphy has given his backing to a pioneering programme which uses snooker to develop the Science, Maths and English skills of young people. R.E.A.L. Functional Snooker links the sport with the national curriculum using a scoring system adapted from the traditional game in which the coloured balls retain their values, the reds are numbered one to ten and all balls contain symbols to indicate whether to multiply, subtract or use addition to calculate the value of the shot.
R.E.A.L. - an acronym of the phrase Re-thinking Engagement and Approaches to Learning - is the organisation’s attempt to spell out that, for some students, success in the education system means that they need to be offered something different. Functional Snooker aims to engage young people through the sport and help them to develop their core skills, as well as their communication, teamwork and problem-solving abilities. King Edward Primary School, Mansfield have recently begun six weeks of free Functional Snooker taster sessions at R.E.A.L. Education’s Kings Mill Way hub in Mansfield. The students really enjoyed their first session as they were introduced to the basic techniques of snooker, and the innovative Functional Snooker format - all in a relaxed, fun and engaging environment.
The students also really enjoyed their time, with one student saying that they, “liked learning good sportsmanship and although we played against each other we supported each other. The maths was helpful and I also liked the puzzles and worksheets we used.” R.E.AL. Education’s patron and World Snooker Champion Shaun Murphy said: “Being involved with young people in their life and trying to help and encourage them is very important to me and my family. “There are a lot of things involved in snooker that people miss. I left school at 13 and was home tutored. I learnt my education,
certainly in mathematics, in the snooker clubs. “My multiplication, division, working out the difference between my opponent's score and myself's was, how many points were available, how many reds and blacks you need for a 147, all that type of thing, came to me without really knowing it. It was like having a constant maths lesson.” Bespoke Functional Snooker courses are available for both primary and secondary interventions, along with limited free pilot sessions. Schools can email: functionalsnooker@real-education.org for more information.
Sheila O’Keefe, Teaching Assistant from King Edward Primary School said: “It has been a pleasure to bring the children along, they have learned some fantastic skills. “The maths side of functional snooker just adds to the fun, the children don’t really notice the fact they are learning. They have shown great teamwork helping each other decide what shots to play to score well. They have been very supportive and shown great sportsmanship.”

Are Cooking Shows and TV Chefs Good for the Hospitality Industry? It is 47 years since Delia Smith published her first recipe and in that time the British public's diet has changed radically under the auspices of a wave of celebrity chefs and fly on the wall documentations.
From channels dedicated to food & the culinary arts, to television shows such as MasterChef, My Kitchen Rules, Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmare, Great British Bake Off & the fun side of Come Dine with me and Can’t cook Won’t Cook. As reality TV created an interesting avenue for average people to gain insight into the Hospitality Industry. Something that nobody can really understand without doing it hands on yourself. The cons of such Reality TV shows are that it is not really reality and the viewers do not see what happens behind the scenes. The fact that some of it is staged to make
good viewing. I am sure that we all have watched Gordon Ramsey go into an empty restaurant to help them out, only for the following day for the Restaurant being full! (Is this Staged or not) They don’t see the chefs working long hours, missing family gatherings, cooking for huge numbers of guests at once, cleaning dishes or scrubbing benches. They don’t get a real sense of the time and preparation that really goes into running a restaurant. This is something that going to West Notts College in the early 1990’s to study Catering never prepared me for. The rise of TV ‘celebrity chefs’ has also changed the way we think about eating. Jamie Oliver introduced youth to the concept of cooking, Nigella Lawson added “sexy” to the menu, and the sharp-tongued Gordon Ramsay went from studying Hotel Management to becoming one of the most famous chefs. As a young Chef wishing to give my best in
the kitchen I often thought “Why are they talking to them like that!” This suddenly became clear within the high pressure of running a busy kitchen, in which every second of every minute of every hour would be intense. On a brighter side we have all watched the fun side of cooking shows like ‘Come Dine With Me’ & ‘Ready Steady Cook’ thinking what are you really doing with that food, what fun it looks like. Home FA Cup Draw to kickstart Wrens’ New Season for 2017 -18 New look Rainworth Miners’ Welfare FC will be pitched straight in at the deep end when their 2017-18 season kicks off on Saturday, 5th August. With no chance of a Toolstation UK Northern Counties East League Premier Division fixture to warm up in advance, the Wrens will launch their season with a home FA Cup extra preliminary round tie against old Evo-Stik League rivals Shepshed Dynamo. These days Shepshed operate in the Midland League, which is the same level as the NCEL, and they have a vociferous away following so Rainworth officials are calling on the local populace to turn up in numbers and support the club. The winners of the tie will be at home to East Midlands Counties League opposition, from one level below, with the winners of the tie between Kimberley MW and Blaby and Whetstone Athletic barring the way. The Wrens have not been quite as fortunate in the draw for the FA Vase though, for they will travel in the first qualifying round to Long Eaton United of the Midland League, with another away tie awaiting the winners, at either Grimsby Borough or local rivals Shirebrook Town, both of the NCEL Division One. The Wrens’ final warm-up game of the season before the Shepshed tie will be the annual home fixture against Mansfield Town, which the Stags have listed as a first team friendly. Although some pre-season games will already have taken place by the time this is in print, the fjull pre-season list is: JULY: Tue 11th 7pm Sherwood Colliery (h); Fri 14th 7.30pm Ollerton Town (a); Tue 18th 7.30pm Dronfield Town (h); Tue 25th
7.30pm Spalding United (h); Sat 29th 3pm Lincoln United (h). AUGUST: Tue 1st 7.30pm Mansfield Town (h). Meanwhile, new boss Craig Denton has been busy recruiting players for his new look side. So far just five of last season’s squad remain, and Denton has been busy tightening up the defence. Last season the Wrens conceded over 100 league goals despite having arguably the best goalkeeper in the division in Ben Townsend. He has agreed to stay and it is understood he will continue as team captain. Others of last season’s squad to have put pen to paper are defender Rob Ludlam, midfielders Tomas Poole and Ryan Herbert, and mid-field/defender Jordan Claxton. Heading the list of newcomers is last season’s Worksop Town captain Jack Waddle, son of ex-England and Sheffield Wednesday star Chris. Jack can operate equally effectively at full back or in midfield and also knows the way to goal. Denton has also brought in two players who were plying their trade in the EvoStik League Premier Division last season. Shomari Doyle, who plays right back, has joined from Buxton, while Denton is particularly pleased to have landed Julian Lawrence from Frickley Athletic. Lawrence sees himself as a central defender, but can operate right through the centre of the park as midfielder or striker. Other newcomers include midfielder/ defender Aaron Draper, left wing back Lee Betts from Retford United, defenders Kieran Barnes from Shirebrook Town, Jack Bennett, and former Sheffield FC’s Tim
Whittaker who joins from Hallam, while Brad Wilson returns to the fold after a year with AFC Mansfield.
