The start of a new year lends itself perfectly to implementing those small (or large) changes in life that could help improve its quality. Whether you want to lose a little weight, move house, or give something up, the urge to do so in the blurry haze of 1 January’s early hours is, for many, too tempting. I can understand that – it’s a bit like at school when you start a new exercise book and you’re absolutely going to keep it neat and tidy, work hard and get only good grades in that book. I don’t think it’s ever too early to start thinking about implementing some good practices to change things for the better. That way – unlike those January gym goers who irk regular work out enthusiasts for the first month of the year – you can put in the groundwork to succeed in advance of leaving the previous year behind. In the Cabinet Maker offices, we too have been planning for next year - as a weekly magazine it’s difficult not to, particularly with such a busy period ahead of us in January. And do we have a January for you?! At the time of going to press, we are busy working ahead for the first issues of the New Year – both of which are January Furniture Show editions, and both look set to be jam-packed. Of course, you may notice that the issue you are reading right now appears to carrying a little extra holiday weight – and it’s quite sensitive about it thank you very much! I kid of course. The only overindulgence here is the result of the hive of activity shared with us as businesses ready themselves for the post-Christmas sales opportunities and of course, the show itself. So, back to New Year’s resolutions – and perhaps yours are entirely business related: starting up on your own, recruiting new members of staff, or developing a new product, website or way of selling. In times of uncertainty there are other resolutions you could be thinking about too, outside of the immediate building of customers/sales. Think about your suppliers – in times of uncertainty such as that in which we seem to be stuck right now, why not consider widening your net of trusted suppliers? That way if one happens to fail, or increases its prices, you have alternative options. This is also sound advice with other partners such as IT or logistics companies. Learning a new skill often comes up in people’s New Year resolutions lists, and this is also a good way to help boost your business. You can find many courses nowadays providing qualifications in e-commerce and online marketing, and some great resources to use, spanning a number of channels. As you would no doubt warn your customers, however, it doesn’t always pay to go with the cheapest solution, or that with the quickest promised fix. As with everything in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It is also worth giving your marketing a health check. Are you sending out the right message? Are you using the right channels? Do they offer measurement so you know if you’ve been successful? On topic, Cabinet Maker will return from the Christmas break refreshed and ready to continue bringing you the most regular and up to date platform from which to share your stories, achievements, and of course, plans for the future. It’s also the place to find news, opinions, advice and guidance to help your business. If you have anything you’d like to shout about, please feel free to get in touch. As a weekly, we still have two issues remaining in which to do so before the January Furniture Show. In the meantime, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and the greatest of success for next year.

CREDITORS TO SUFFER SHORTFALL FOLLOWING LIQUIDATION

FIRE DAMAGE S MACHINE AT FABRIC GROUPS FACTORY

Creditors of Colchester-based cabinet furniture manufacturer Fineline Furniture Contracts Limited are set to suffer a shortfall of almost £60,000. Stella Davis, of London-based insolvency firm Streets SPW, was appointed as liquidator of Fineline Furniture Contracts on 14 November 2017. According to newly filed documents through Companies House, Fineline Furniture Contracts owed creditors £62,550 ahead of entering liquidation, with secured creditors, made up of employee claims, owed £2,846.

Interior furnishings group Walker Greenbank has confirmed its wallpaper factory suffered a minor fire. The company’s Loughborough Anstey Wallpaper business suffered a fire on 5 December 2017 at 10pm which damaged one of the factory’s printing machines and stock. Walker Greenbank said that it was ‘too early’ to know if the damaged machine would be again operational and if there would be any potential impact on the company’s performance for the current financial year

Those preferential claims are expected to be paid in full from realised assets valuing a total of £3,819, largely gained from plant and machinery assets as well as customer goodwill. This leaves £973 for unsecured creditors, who have combined claims of £59,704, including the HMRC, owed £18,992, the trade, owed £14,758 and other employee arrears, owed £25,954. It is expected that unsecured creditors are to suffer a total shortfall of £58,831.

Consumer confidence ‘fragile’ as profits fall at carpet retailer

Two home furnishing related businesses have been named and shamed by the Government in its latest minimum wage offenders list.

Flooring retail specialist Carpetright has reported a growth in half year revenue despite bed sales impacting performance.

Published this month by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BEIS), a total of 260 businesses, which collectively owed £1.7m in arrears, failed to pay 16,000 workers the correct minimum wage rates. The Government investigators fined employers £1.3m for underpayment. Common reasons for errors made include: failing to pay workers travelling between jobs, deducting money from pay for uniforms and not paying for overtime. Within the list relating to the furniture and homewares industry includes Belfast-based department store Dunnes Stores (Bangor) Ltd, who failed to pay £6,951 to 804 workers. Earlier this year Dunnes closed its Bangor site, adding to previous closures over the past few years in Belfast including at the Connswater Shopping Centre and in the Park Centre, as well as other stores across Northern Ireland in Ballymoney, Antrim and Portadown. The other company named on the list was Birmingham-based flooring retailer Tower Carpets, who failed to pay £141 to three workers. Business Minister Margot James said: “There is no excuse for not paying staff the wages they’re entitled to and the government will come down hard on businesses that break the rules. “That’s why today we are naming hundreds of employers who have been short changing their workers; and to ensure there are consequences for their wallets as well as their reputation, we’ve levied millions in back pay and fines.”

According to its latest trading update for the 26 weeks ended 28 October 2017, total sales rose 2.6% to £228.1m from £222.3m, with UK like-for-like sales showing a marginal increase of 0.7% compared to its decline of 2.9% last year. Within its UK sales demographic, its core flooring sector saw improved sales of 1.9% although bed sales fell, which were impacted by the ‘clearance of discontinued lines’ as it ‘changed the entire range’. Total UK sales resulted at £185.1m. Underlying operating profit stood at £3.6m, down from £4.9m, reflecting the impact of beds clearance and higher store costs, whilst total group pre-tax profit resulted at £2.1m, down from £5.1m year-on-year. As for its EU division, like-for-like sales rose 6.5%, whilst an operating loss of £0.4m was recorded, down from its profit £1.1m against the same period. Total EU sales stood at £43m. During the period, the company closed 10 underperforming stores, reducing its total UK estate to 418 stores. Carpetright said that current trading has been ‘encouraging’ with UK like-for-like sales up by 1.4% in the six weeks to 9 December 2017, driven by its flooring category of 2.7% growth. Commenting on the results, Wilf Walsh, chief executive, said: “The first half has undoubtedly been challenging. Consumer confidence remains fragile and we continue to manage the impact of intensified competition. We have made pleasing progress in our core flooring business in the UK.”

Design brand launches furniture reuse service British design brand ByALEX has announced the launch of its furniture repair and revive service. Launching back in November 2017, the ByALEX Revive™ Service has been created as a way to bring new life to furniture and ensure it lasts a lifetime. Customers can purchase a ‘Revive at Home’ kit where they can learn how to repair their furniture in their own home with support from Alex and apply this to other furniture items they own. Alternatively, the ‘Return & Revive’ service allows the customer to return a selection of products to ByALEX for a regeneration service in their workshop. Commenting on the launch, ByALEX founder and designer Alex Swain, said: “We all love buying new things, especially designers but this project came from me thinking about what ‘new’ really means. Does refreshing a product to it’s original status bring me the same emotional bond as something new? For me I realised it does, as what is important is that I buy things I’d like to keep for a long time. Restoring them to look ‘new’ simply means taking care of the product.”

Interiors firm expands team ahead of relocation

The respected career of the late Mark Wilkinson OBE, founder of Mark Wilkinson Furniture and co-founder of Smallbone of Devizes, was celebrated at the Walpole British Luxury Awards. Taking place last month at the The Dorchester Hotel in London, the event was hosted by Catherine Zeta Jones with the late Mark Wilkinson being presented with the Walpole Honour Award. Mark’s wife Cynthia was there to receive the Honour on behalf of his family. The Honour was bestowed in memory of someone, who, as a great furniture maker and designer, has contributed to the British luxury sector Helen Brocklebank, Walpole CEO, said: “Mark’s work completely redefined what we understand by a beautifully designed kitchen. Described by one critic as the ‘Mozart of kitchen cabinet makers’,

he, more than anyone was responsible for switching the focus away from the kitchen as a utilitarian work-place and into the centre of elegant entertaining. He made the kitchen the heart of the home.” The visionary designer, who passed away in July 2017, was an exceptionally skilled craftsman and furniture maker. Amongst other accolades, he was a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, a Fellow of the City and Guilds Institute and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers of the City of London. In 2010 he was awarded an OBE for Services to the Furniture Industry and Charity. Mark was also a member of MENSA. Mark Wilkinson is survived by his wife Cynthia and his children, Victoria and Gregory.

Wind-down process begins Redundancies at collapsed furniture retail chain Multiyork has been announced as wind-down process begins. Administrators, Duff & Phelps, confirmed the loss of 112 jobs at Multiyork’s headquarters and manufacturing facility in Thetford, Norfolk, as hopes of a sale of the business remains in the air. US OFFICE FURNITURE GIANT E XPANDS; UK SALE S DOWN Global office furniture group Steelcase has announced the acquisition of adjustable furniture provider AMQ Solutions for an undisclosed sum. US-based Steelcase said the acquisition of California-based AMQ will serve customers globally and is expected to be completed during Q4 of fiscal year 2018. The deal will add AMQ’s $37m turnover business into the group. Commenting on the takeover, Allan Smith, vice president, global marketing of Steelcase, said: “There is great value to be created in joining our two companies. “AMQ is eager to grow by leveraging our industry-leading dealer network and global reach, and we expect to drive further growth.” Steelcase recently filed its full results ended February 2017 which saw total group sales remain flat at $3bn.

Within its EMEA (serving customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa primarily under the Steelcase and Coalesse brands) division, UK sales experienced a decline, alongside the Middle East and Africa, combined at $16.7m or by 3% year-on-year. Elsewhere in the segment, revenues across central Europe, Germany and France delivered growth offsetting the weak UK performance. Total EMEA sales fell 3.2% to $503.9m from $520.6m last year, with the division representing 16.6% of total group sales. Steelcase looks to build on its EMEA sector after recently entering into a partnership with Danish furniture design brand Bolia. Scottish furniture retailers grow sales Tillicoultry-based furniture retailer Forrest Furnishings has reported a growth in sales as well as seeing profits decline. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 28 February 2017, total sales rose to £9m compared to its revenue of £8.8m in December 2015. Pre-tax profit resulted at £33,174 for the period, down from £203,293 excluding an pre-exceptional item of £3.4m, with the company stating it was satisfied with the result in what was a ‘difficult market’. Forrest Furnishing, which is now part of the Sterling Furniture Group, said within its report that the Brexit vote continues to negatively impact consumer confidence. Other implicating factors include the low levels of housing activity, which have an impact on retail sales. Sterling Furniture Group, which acquired Forrest back in July 2016 for a sum of over £4m, has also reported a growth in sales of 7% to £56.7m from £53.2m in 2016. The increase in turnover marked a fourth straight year of sales growth. Due to increased costs relating to the acquisition, Sterling saw pre-tax profits drop from £2.4m to £1.8m. The group also cited the same concerns within the marketplace.

The chairman of property investment business Panther Securities PLC has not blamed Brexit after a number of its tenants have collapsed. Andrew Perloff, chairman of Panther Securities PLC, who also owns mattress group Airsprung as well as Beales and a number of property investment firms, commented in Panther’s latest update concerning its tenant Multiyork and its recent ‘difficulties’. Mr Perloff moved away from blaming the uncertainty around Brexit, rather to point the finger on ‘relentless’ taxes businesses have to absorb. In a statement of chairman’s ramblings headed ‘the evil that men do lives on after them’ - a quote by William Shakespeare, Andrew said: “We have begun to notice that a few of our tenants, including MultiYork, have begun to experience difficulties and although new lettings continue to take place, the recent failure of Palmer & Harvey, a large and old established business, indicates the direction of travel. “These Portents of Problems to come I believe are nothing to do with Brexit but the relentless extra taxes and obligations heaped upon businesses. There is a considerable burden on businesses from the minimum wage, carbon tax, green taxes, insurance tax, the apprenticeship levy and excessive property taxes. “This is especially the case with business rates, where even when Government experts who opine that the rate payments should be less are disregarded and effectively disallowed by minimal phasing of the reductions. In due course they will realise the folly of excessive taxes and regulations and, if in time, may halt the obviously downward trend.”

Steinhoff to provide ‘comfort’ for stakeholders Global furniture group Steinhoff International has revealed it has received ‘expressions of interest’ to release liquidity through asset sales and the refinancing of its Steinhoff Africa Retail (STAR) business. In a statement that followed the resignation of its CEO, amid an investigation into accounting irregularities, Steinhoff said it had ‘received expressions of interest in certain non-core assets that will release a minimum of €1bn of liquidity’, with its subsidiary STAR committing to the ‘refinancing of its long-term liabilities due to the company’. Steinhoff added that STAR’s refinancing will be ‘on better terms’ in a move to ‘provide additional comfort’ to stakeholders with the additional liquidity of €2bn expected to be achieved, which will be used to fund its existing operations and reduce debt. In a statement, Steinhoff, which owns UK brands Bensons for Beds, Harveys and Poundland, said: “The Supervisory Board has given further consideration to the issues subject to the investigation and to the validity and recoverability of certain non-South African assets of the company which amount to circa €6bn.”

UK GROW TH AT LIGHTING FIRM; SALES DOWN IN CURRENT YEAR

UK SALE S DOWN AT EUROPE AN FURNITURE SUPPLIER

Lighting systems and components supplier Zumtobel UK has reported a growth in full year sales and profits. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 30 April 2017, total sales rose 36.5% to £165.9m from £121.5m in 2016. In cash terms, revenues increased by £44.4m. Gross profit also experienced an uptick of 25.1% to £29.9m from £23.9m, whilst pre-tax profit resulted at £1.9m, up by 58.3% from £1.2m recorded last year. The Buckinghamshire-based business, which is part of the Zumtobel Group and also its largest market in Northern Europe, said that it continues to benefit from investments made by its parent company. Post year-end and looking into its current year, according to Zumtobel Group’s recent half year trading update, UK sales have fallen ‘sharply’ by around 35% due to a ‘more difficult market environment’ and compared to an ‘exceptionally good quarter in the previous year’. The group added that a growing number of project

Estonian furniture manufacturer and wood fibre supplier Skano Group has reported a decline in UK sales as it confirms its exit from the market. According to its latest third quarter trading update for the nine months in 2017, total UK sales, which mainly consist from its fibreboard division, fell 74.4% to €222,000 (£195,000) from €869,000 (£766,000), representing 2.4% of total sales, down from 9% last year. Skano said that sales to the UK were ‘heavily loss-making due to the extensive price competition in this segment’, with the company cancelling its contract with one large lossmaking customer in Britain. The group added: “The exit from this market has improved our total fibreboard profitability.” Exports to the UK from its furniture factory segment rose 57.1% to €33,000 (£29,000) from €21,000 (£18,000) against the same period last year. Within its other divisions, which includes retail and wholesale across Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine, group sales were down

postponements in the UK, the most important single market for the Zumtobel Group, ‘amplified’ negative effects. The weak UK performance hindered revenue growth within its Northern Europe division, with sales down by 17% to €142.9m (£125.9m) due to ‘strong negative foreign exchange effects from the British pound’. Zumtobel Group operates on a global scale with its other core market being in the DACH region, consisting of Germany, Switzerland and Austria, with the latter where the group is based in Dornbirn. Half-year sales within this sector were down 5.7% to €190.7m, whilst sales across Eastern Europe and Asia were the only two that showed positive gains, up by 9% and 0.3% respectively. The UK, with its Northern Europe segment, currently represents 22.9% of all group sales, the second largest behind its DACH division, which represents 30.5%.

8% to €12.5m from €13.6m, although net profit increased to €117,000 compared to its loss of €667,000 last year. Skano Group recorded EBITDA of €289,000, representing 7.5% of sales, compared to €219,000 last year. This was mainly due to the sale of its Ukrainian retail subsidiary TOV Skano Ukraine in March 2017 for a sum of €48,000, as well as one off gains in the sale of a property worth €142,000 in September. Skano said in a statement: “The overall global demand for Fibreboard remains strong, as we can see from our overall 18% sales growth in selling to customers located in 32 countries (excluding sales to Finland and UK). “The good performance of Skano’s own retail furniture operations has made up for wholesale sales decline, thus enabling Skano to record a positive EBITDA result for our total furniture activities. We remain bullish on the outlook for our own furniture chain.”

FURNITURE MAKER ACQUIRES UK BRAND

Office furniture maker receives green recognition

Commercial furniture manufacturer Ocee International has announced the acquisition of British manufacturer Race Furniture. Ocee International, which has just been listed in the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 fastest growing privately owned UK companies and is the parent company of furniture brands Ocee Design and Danishbased Four Design, said that the acquisition will ‘add to the group’s own contemporary British and Danish furniture portfolio’. Gloucestershire-based Race Furniture was founded by Ernest Race over 70 years ago and supplies seating for public spaces, which includes both UK and international projects such as The Royal Opera House and Royal Copenhagen Opera House. Stuart Finlator, director of Race said: “I am very excited about the next chapter under Ocee’s ownership. With Ocee’s increasing focus on design and international markets I

believe that Race will continue to flourish as a world leader in public seating and that our incredible design heritage will bring a new dimension to the Ocee brand.” Alistair Gough, CEO, of Ocee International commented: “The acquisition of Race Furniture is a fantastic opportunity to have such an iconic British brand as part of the Group and to enable Ocee International to establish a strong presence within the public seating sectors of auditorium and concourse furniture. The existing Race team have done a tremendous job developing the strong reputation and performance of the company within the market sectors it operates. “We believe that by further investing in areas such as sales, marketing and product development there are opportunities for significant growth within the UK and internationally.”

Office furniture manufacturer Herman Miller has been named the winner of a sustainable award. Taking place last month at the Made in the South West Awards, Herman Miller won the ‘Green/Sustainable Manufacturer’ accolade for the South West region. The award for Green/Sustainable Manufacturer is for the company that has demonstrated the greatest commitment, though its products and processes, to forging a sustainable manufacturing future for their region. This includes the commitment to energy efficiency and to reducing the impact of manufacturing on the environment. As part of their submission, Herman Miller could demonstrate its commitment to using 100% renewable energy in all its facilities through purchasing certified Renewable Energy Credits and Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin, since 2010. On receiving the award, Becci Ricardo, head of international safety and sustainability commented: “Behaving responsibly towards the environment should be more than just a statement of intent. At Herman Miller, it’s an attitude that permeates every part of our business, as it has done for the last sixty years. “During the past year, we have implemented a closed-loop recycling system with Egger UK/Timberpak for wood waste generated at our factory in Melksham. We use EGGER board in the manufacturing of our desks and work systems. The waste generated is sent to Timberpak for initial reprocessing and then to EGGER for further processing. “The clean recycled wood is then used as part of the mix to make new particle board, which we then use to make more furniture. I am really proud that this amounts to the ethical disposal of more than 1,000 tonnes of wood waste each year.”

We hope that the opportunity will arise again in the future to resurrect Against the Grain as our commitment to the idea remains strong.” Against the Grain is a charity which takes on young people to upcycle unwanted furniture to sell on.

TRENDING HOMEWARE SALES UP 2.2% IN NOVEMBER HIGH STREET SALES TRACKER Sophie Michael, head of retail and wholesale at BDO LLP “Many stores have struggled so far in the final quarter of this year, and a small rise in sales over Black Friday won’t be nearly enough to deliver a positive like-for-like result in the fourth quarter. We believe that the fall in consumer confidence combined with the drop in real earnings due to rising prices is very likely to lead to shoppers cutting back on their discretionary spending. Retailers will be hoping for a repeat of last year’s massive last-minute festive buying spree, when we saw double digit like-for-like growth in the week leading up to Christmas.”

RETAIL PARKS MOST RESILIENT AS HIGH STREET SUFFERS The latest data from retail intelligence experts Springboard, showed total footfall across all retail destinations rose marginally by +1% week-on-week. For the week commencing 27 November, it was the UK high streets that suffered the most, reporting a marginal rise in footfall of just +0.3% week on week. Retail Parks were the most resilient with footfall increasing by +1.7% from the Black Friday week. Diane Wehrle, retail insights director at Springboard, said: “These results are likely to be driven by the surge in click and collect following the Black Friday Weekend and Cyber Monday, evidence why the retail parks are seeming to buck the UK high streets slowdown.”

JANUARY FURNITURE SHOW 28 | 15th December 2017

POINT We may not yet have reached Christmas, but we all know that the start of 2018 is where the real excitement lies, as we cast our minds for ward to what can be expected at the NEC in a few short weeks, for the January Fu r n i t u re S h ow.

As other industries prepare themselves for a brief respite from the daily grind with the rapidly approaching festive holiday period, those in the furniture trade are doing quite the opposite, somehow fitting in their own present buying, decorating and cooking with the not insignificant preparation that goes into four days of exhibiting at a show. And what a show! Yes, it’s that time again where, as we get ready to go to press, exhibitors in their hundreds are putting together the finishing touches for their stands in preparation for the January Furniture Show in a few weeks’ time. These aforementioned exhibitors represent the majority of the biggest names in the UK, alongside a healthy number of international brands, offering a comprehensive representation of today’s furniture and furnishings industry. Cabinet Maker will bring you all the latest developments from the show and its exhibitors in the weeks preceding the show, but for now we have put together some helpful information for those planning to make their way to Birmingham. After two successful years of running over four days, the 2018 iteration of the event will follow suit, allowing maximum time for visitors to see everything the exhibitors have to showcase. The event will begin

on Sunday 21 January, when it will be from 9.30am and run until Wednesday 24 January. The doors will be open from 9am until 6pm for remaining days, barring a slightly earlier finish of 4pm on the last day. With its location in the middle of the UK’s motorway network, some 75% of the UK is able to reach the NEC within a three-hour drive. The postcode for sat nav users is B40 1NT, but the NEC is actually clearly signposted from all motorways and major routes, so just look for signs to the January Furniture Show. Unlike many venues, the NEC has catered for parking, with more than 16,500 spaces available and a helpful traffic team on-hand to offer guidance. A free shuttle bus is also available to transfer visitors from the car park to the venue entrance.

BFM Hall 1, Stand A90 Visitors to the 2018 January Furniture Show will be able to discover the British Furniture Manufacturers’ (BFM) brand new initiative for 2018, launching at the exhibition. Said Jackie Bazeley, md: “We’re delighted to once again be attending the January Furniture Show and unveil our new scheme, alongside some 44 of our members. It’s a key platform for us to show visitors to our stand the advantages of BFM membership and a great opportunity to network with as many people from the furniture sector as possible.”

For visitors choosing to arrive by rail, the venue is located less than 10 minutes by foot from Birmingham International Railway Station. Direct services run all day, but for those travelling from further away may need to catch a connecting train at Birmingham New Street. International visitors can rest assured that Birmingham Airport is practically on the NEC’s doorstep and there is a free, fast air-rail link to Birmingham International Railway Station located on the upper level of Terminal 1. So, now you know where and when it is, and how to get there, what can you expect from this year’s show? Well, the event can boast a full and comprehensive product mix, with everything you need from classic and contemporary furniture, flooring, lighting and accessories and more. It also, says the organisers, has the widest choice of suppliers under one roof. And these will this year be joined by some exciting new signings.

It’s not often that even one Cabinet Maker squad member is fortunate enough to bag seats to a movie premiere, but thanks

LEAGUE The 15 players weighed a combined 1.5 metric tonnes

to Kaymed, both Keely Por t way and Dan Squires secured exclusive invitations to the filming of the company’s latest big box office production. If this were an old school movie trailer, it might begin something like this: “In a world famous for its fishing, one team had a common goal. That goal was to gain a sponsor to play rugby. And fit 15 burly men on one mattress.” But of course, it’s not, although the excitement at being able to see a real life advert in production was as palpable to the Cabinet Maker team as a ticket to the Oscars. The plot began on an early November Saturday, which saw two Cabinet Maker editors make their way to the West Norfolk Rugby Union Football Club in King’s Lynn to witness the filming of a brand new advert for luxury bed and mattress manufacturer, Kaymed. The TV advert is for the company’s best selling Mighty Bed, and it is due to run instore and on the web from Boxing Day into 2018 to support the manufacturer’s retailer customers in this busy trading period.

34 | 15th December 2017

The Mighty Bed itself is designed to combine stunning aesthetics with superior comfort – check – but it additionally offers a level of strength of which Superman himself would be proud, making it the ideal choice, optionally but not exclusively for even the heaviest of sleepers. And who better to tell this story than 15 of West Norfolk Rugby Football Club’s finest? The club kindly allowed one of its teams to take part in the shoot on a busy match day, as well as donating the club itself as a venue. It return, fame and fortune for the lucky 15 beckoned, and so too did kit sponsorship from the company – a great result all round! But of course, as is often the case not every single thing can go to plan. When discussing arrangements with marketing manager UK for the business, Jeremy Navrady, the phrase ‘weather permitting’ cropped up, and this editor awoke on

Saturday morning to torrential rain! Luckily as one might expect from the business, this eventuality was planned for, and – following a rather welcome bacon sandwich and coffee courtesy of the lovely Lisa Navrady - we were ushered to the venue’s squash court to watch the filming. For anyone in any doubt, it has to be said, we saw those 15 rugby players – none of whom were remotely diminutive – climb onto the bed for filming and stay on it for the duration. And it stood firm, with nothing to indicate it was carrying such a weighty cargo (1.5 metric tonnes to be precise). The camaraderie between the players was great – and not just a little bit amusing – to behold, and they were all even happy to stick around in case of any re-films, despite having to rush off to play a match – the kind of dedication we’ve become accustomed to from Kaymed itself.

MANUFACTURE|BEDS & MAT TRESSES GOOD COMPANY The attention to detail that goes into the making of an advert was also something to behold, even if our ears were left slightly ringing after numerous takes that required all 15 lads to bellow at the top of their voices, echoing around the court creating a stadium-like atmosphere. That said, even further behind the scenes forms the actual planning and preproduction stages that all must be signed off and approved, which can cause a few muddy patches. The most important aspect for Jeremy is telling the right story that engages and highlights just how mighty the Mighty Bed is. “The way I tell a story is it needs to be simple, unexpected, concrete, credible and emotional. The Mighty Bed is a phenomenally strong bed and we wanted to get that story across. Then sticking a rugby team of 15 on it is pretty concrete,” he explained. The simple strategy builds a formation that delivers. When was the last time you saw 15 rugby players on a bed? Creating the unexpected using real people sets the tone for the brand, which ultimately makes it stand out from the crowd as Jeremy says: “It’s part of our commitment to differentiate the brand. The product is very different but if our story is not remarkable then it’s just another brand. We want to be remarkable and get people to say ‘we’ve never seen that before’.” The goal has certainly been accomplished. Once the story has been created it must be approved by Clearcast, an organisation

WEST NORFOLK RUGBY CLUB WERE ENGAGED FROM THE START. IT 'S GOOD TO SUPPORT GRASSROOTS AS LOTS OF PEOPLE GO OUT AND SPEND LOTS OF MONEY ON TEAMS AND PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY WELL SUPPORTED ANYWAY that approves adverts before making it onto the screen. Kaymed said that work began back at the NBF Bed Show in September to make sure it was targeting the right audience and the right time. Jeremy revealed: “The important thing is to make sure you get to the right audience with the right products in the right place at the right time. Our job is to make sure we support the trade and our specialist retailers, and because of that the winter sale is a key selling period for the retailers. Getting on specific TV stations and channels is a very cost effective way of doing that.” Alongside the rugby scene, Kaymed opted for a second location for its beauty side of the advert, which made the logistics a challenge that had to be planned to perfection. Aside from the King’s Lynn rain, the filming was a success at both shoots. In keeping with the rugby, Jeremy indicated the importance to provide support to those who might best

appreciate it when thinking of the right partner for the Mighty Bed. He said: “West Norfolk Rugby Club were engaged from the start. It’s good to support grassroots as lots of people go out and spend lots of money on teams and people who are very well supported anyway. These guys have a harder job to get that publicity.” Jeremy also remarked that the rugby team was his personal highlight of the process and from attending the filming we would have to agree. They were brilliant! And the finished article? It’s all to support the retailer, as Jeremy concluded: “A significant sum of investment goes into the production and we are committed in supporting our retailers - which will be able to display the ad in their stores. “A lot of time, energy and effort goes into these activities. We think it is interesting to tell the story and show what goes into something like this. It’s not just thrown together, a lot of thought goes into it, just like when creating a product.” As these two editors left the rainy rugby pitch in King’s Lynn, it was with a feeling of genuine excitement to see the finished article, and having now done so, we weren’t disappointed! You can see it for yourself on Kaymed’s website from Boxing Day onwards, and we also have a sneak preview on the Cabinet Maker site. So grab your popcorn and get comfortable.

This is something that Darren Barker, general manager at family run manufacturing business, The British Bed Company has found out. No stranger himself to what is involved when it comes to starting and growing a business, The British Bed Company opened its factory’s doors back in 2012, when it began its life with a small (but incredibly hardworking) team and a range of four mattresses. The factory was expanded two years later, with the addition of divan production and the recruitment of more skilled British workers to the team. Today’s British Bed Company has a staff of nearly 60, and a product offering which encompasses dozens of retail and contract mattresses, customisable divans and bespoke special beds across the country. Combining traditional manufacturing techniques with the latest technology, the company is proud of its status as a British manufacturer, sourcing its raw

MATTRESSTEK OVERSAW THE PROCESS OF MOVING THE EXISTING FACTORY TO THE NEW ONE AND THEIR CALL OUT TIMES WERE FANTASTIC WE ARE ALREADY UP AND RUNNING materials from quality UK suppliers to and so promoting the British manufacturing industry and supporting local at the same time as creating a high quality product. If these ideals sound familiar to those held by Mattresstek, it’s probably because they are, so it’s little surprise that the two businesses have quickly developed such a strong working relationship. In fact, when The British Bed Company was looking to expand once again in order to stay ahead of the increased demand for its products, 20171207_160645 the company

turned to Mattresstek, and the machinery manufacturer was more than happy to go above and beyond machinery supply alone. To offer a little more in the way of background, the mattress manufacturer recently moved from its 30,000 sq ft facility in Norwich, to a new, 50,000 sq ft factory not far away in the city, in order to allow room for further growth in line with demand. General manager, Darren Barker explained: “We placed our requirements out to Tender. Once again we were looking for good value, good quality machines. Shaun and Michael came to see us and they were brilliant. Nothing was too much hassle; they came with good ideas, great products and value for money.” The British Bed Company purchased a new tape edger, tufter and conveyor belts from Mattresstek, and, from placing

the order for the machines (a TapeTek, TuftTek, and full conveyor line - of 30m including a 90 degree turner, and 20m of gravity conveyor) Mattresstek had less than eight weeks to fully manufacture and deliver. And the project didn’t end there, as Shaun, Michael and their team actively got involved with what is often the difficult and arduous process of moving from one facility to another ensuring that the transfer of 30 existing machines was completed in a single weekend. Darren continued: “Mattresstek oversaw the process of moving the existing factory to the new one and their call out times were fantastic - we are already up and running. We are quite small compared to many companies, and, especially as a new startup itself, Mattresstek was understanding of exactly what we required, from the products, but also timeframes and value for money. Their prices were keen and their service excellent.” So, what does the expansion mean for the manufacturer? Well, without giving too much away, as well as keeping ahead of customer demand, it has allowed the business to additionally invest time in its popular product range. “The nice thing,” said Darren, “is working in close contact with companies like Mattresstek so that we have the new technology to test new designs and materials.” And there are some new designs in development as we speak, so watch this space!

whether Brexit will impact nearshoring.

Furniture export is increasing year by year, and Poland is fourth on the list of the furniture exporters in the world. The statistics show that in the first quarter of 2017, export of Polish furniture has significantly increased compared with previous years. Within 160 countries, to which furniture were exported, the majority of the production was distributed within EU, mainly in Germany, Great Britain, Netherlands, France and Czech Republic. Furniture imported from Poland were further exported within European and non-European parts of the World. Central Europe is still popular in the global outsourcing business. Will the nearshoring continue to grow even though Article 50 for Brexit has been triggered? It is not only in UK but also in their counterparty’s interest to negotiate a mutually beneficial deal and continue free trade. There is also a big question mark on Polish people that are currently working in UK furniture factories. A lack of free movement caused by Brexit might result in more nearshoring. The positive attitude is being observed among Polish furniture manufacturers. They continue investing in first class machines, robots and automation in their factories, minimizing production costs wherever possible. Lack of resources, with finding the right skillset in the furniture industry is becoming an issue all over the world. Private furniture companies and sewing rooms in Poland are sponsoring education in schools and organizing dedicated trainings for seamstresses and upholsterers. Customer care in export teams has also improved recently and companies are well aware that the right communication is a key for successful business collaboration. I am impressed how the family businesses are developing into big companies, employing more and more people every year serving clients from all over the world. Even though 50 | 15th December 2017

the exchange rate for British Pound dropped off and there has been an increase in safety restrictions in the furniture industry, there is still a lot of interest in doing business with UK based companies.

PRIVATE FURNITURE COMPANIES AND SEWING ROOMS IN POLAND ARE SPONSORING EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZING DEDICATED TRAININGS FOR SEAMSTRESSES AND UPHOLSTERERS

Brexit is considered as an opportunity for nearshoring growth as more and more outsourcing deals were signed on the UK market last year. In Micro Outsourcing I observe lots of interest in art (hand-made modern furniture made of glass, wood and metal) as well as in upholstery furniture (mainly sewing) coming from Belgium, Netherlands and the UK. Spare parts, furniture accessories and furniture for fair are also of importance for British buyers. I believe the nearshoring business will not be highly impacted by Brexit unless Great Britain delays the negotiations with countries on trade tariffs. There is also a trend in purchasing factories within the EU by British manufacturers. Is this the way to avoid custom costs and ensure continuity in export within EU in future? Such proactive reactions on upcoming changes will continue unless the UK dispels any doubts about international cooperation. I believe that the trade conditions, although new, will be to ensure further cooperation between UK and EU to not harm British economy.

T H E G A P… Did you know that a whopping 77% of worldwide e-commerce carts are still sitting there in the ether, waiting to materialise into a transaction? This clearly suggests that access to the right expertise at the time of purchase is crucial. So, with online shopping becoming ever big business, how can retailers get around this problem? In 2015, entrepreneur Adam Levene developed a solution that has been turning heads (and fingertips) in the world of retail.

Homeware retailer Heal’s announces collaboration with Hero, helping to merge the digital with the physical. Sally Gower investigates.

At the tap of a button thanks to the Hero app, customers around the globe can access an in-store expert in real-time.

52 | 15th December 2017

David Kohn, Heal’s e-commerce director, said: “Hero is helping us remain at the forefront of retail, enabling our online customers to access in real-time the knowledge and passion of our in-store experts. This not only reinforces what makes the Heal’s brand and experience special, but is also very successful. Customers engaging with Hero convert at

“We’d seen an explosion of channels in terms of how people use their smart phones and other devices,” explained Adam, Hero founder and co-CEO. “It’s full of messaging apps such as WhatsApp and it’s all effortless. There was an opportunity to make the retail industry more human. We’re bringing Hero to the largest of retail websites, creating these ‘omni-channels’ that enable retailers to connect to customers.” Iconic homeware retailer Heal’s has recently hopped on board the Hero train. With a history spanning more than 200 years, Heal’s remains the go-to-store for contemporary design and emerging talent. Unsurprisingly dubbed ‘the home of design’, the retailer started out as a mattress-maker in 1810 later joining forces with the Arts and Crafts movement, making it one of London’s favourite jewels atop the design retail crown.

Armed with Hero on smartphones and tablets, in-store style advisors can now provide their expertise to customers on the website, particularly during busy hours online and quieter trading hours in-store. Sending recommendations, photos of the latest collections and even live video broadcasts, style advisors are providing a highly visual 1:1 shopping experience.

Hero employees can now use smartphones to offer their expertise to customers on the website

RE TAIL|OMNICHANNEL GOOD COMPANY 14 times our normal rate and their average order value is 57% higher.” It doesn’t stop there. Retailers such as Made.com, John Hardy and Heal’s have reported conversion rates and sales increases of 15.9%, 44% and 57% respectively, since the introduction of Hero. Adam believes this trend should continue: “The shopper needs a personal experience of the store. When in-store, the customer is drawn to buy something so the conversion rate is higher than online. So in speaking to an associate through an online channel such as Hero, they are supplied with in-depth knowledge and experience of the products available.” The technology also enables the ability to ‘upsell’. The opportunity is there for growth in value, as a 15% higher conversion rate signifies. Monitoring of data is key, whereby the teams at both businesses work together, monitoring significant data they collect from the app, in order to utilise it in the best way for the business and the consumer.

“IT’S HELPING RETAILERS AS WELL AS GIVING CUSTOMERS THAT COMFORT AND ULTIMATELY TAPPING INTO THE DEMOCRATISATION OF GREAT SERVICE. ”

Heal’s wanted to get involved to bring in as many customers as possible, Adam explained: “The associates in-store have a deep understanding of the products in their stores. When the customer walks into a store with their smart phone, it empowers

associates have sufficient training on the Hero app to bring the process to life. There has been a real desire to use the app, a lot of excitement to get started.”

the associates in-store to sell. From day one, we made sure Hero would be easy to use, so it’s as simple as tapping a button on the bottom right side of the retailer’s website. The process is designed to be as smooth as shopping in-store. It will have only taken one day for a Heal’s engineer to install. It’s then a case of ensuring

foresee a problem. Before purchasing a bed or sofa, customers need to be 100% sure the product meets their criteria in order to avoid having to return it. Despite this, Adam’s confident that it won’t be an issue for consumers: “Customers can chat with associates about fit, texture and comfort. They can communicate the product to the customer through video on the app, and really bring the small details to life that may not otherwise have been possible on the website.”

Some in the furniture retail industry might

The initial risk with so much emphasis on online shopping through apps is that it isn’t accessible for all and retailers could miss a portion of the wider demographic. Adam voiced confidence in the app’s usability: “We’ve tried to make Hero accessible for all customers. It’s available for use on phones and tablets and really no different to text messaging.” Although Hero has been around for two years, it has been growing rapidly and more retailers, like Heal’s, are joining forces with 54 | 15th December 2017

the app to help increase their turnover. Retailers with Hero tend to fall into three categories, with mainly luxury goods and jewellery, home-ware and fashion apparel leading the evolution in e-commerce. “The greatest competitive advantage is with Amazon,” explained Adam. “People at Amazon can’t offer a personal experience or advice and expertise on demand. Using our technology gives the customer the sensation of having his or her own personal shopper. It’s very open-ended, too, as customers can ask for advice on which styles of furniture are currently in fashion. It can be a much more considered purchase. “It’s the same for apps such as Facebook or Instagram,” elaborated Adam. “While they are fantastic apps for acquisition, they are not driven for e-commerce. Hero fits on retailers’ websites. Nobody else uses the technology in-store. It’s an element of control for the retailer – the associate can build a profile, see which previous purchases customers have made, see which products the customer has been browsing. It’s a powerful tool in driving sales. While December typically brings a quieter period in furniture and homeware sales, the introduction of Hero in flagship stores such as Heal’s will potentially lead to big distribution and a high number of recommendations.” Hero’s promise is to assist customers outside the store with products in-store. So what happens when a customer walks into the store while an associate is assisting a customer on the app? “We never tell retailers to hire personnel for Hero. Retailers have enough opportunity throughout the week to go online and assist customers with their purchases. There are quieter hours in-store and busier hours online during the evening. It’s very flexible around the associate too – they can switch their ‘availability’ setting to off in stores when customers approach them. Additionally, the branded devices used for Hero will clearly indicate that associates are working, and it presents an opportunity to promote the app to customers for future use. In essence, it’s been positively disruptive for retail. It’s the future of the retail industry.”

COULD THEY BE DOING BETTER? The prospect of continued trading uncertainty raises the question of whether your distributors and agents are performing as you want them to perform. Could they be doing better? In turn, this raises the question of whether your business would do better by replacing any of your distributors or agents. If so, the issue is then how to achieve this result, particularly when distributors and agents enjoy certain legal protections. Often the answer is to be found in performance management. If this goes well, things turn around and the actual performance of the distributor or agent has improved then no further action is needed. Alternatively it can provide the way forward to terminate the agreement and avoid a claim for some form of compensation – or at least reduce the amount. The basis of performance management is the agreement which you have, whether it is with the distributor or the agent. If it has been drafted to protect your interests, the agreement should impose a raft of duties on the distributor or agent which you can take advantage of. It is not simply an issue of going through the duties and obligations and requiring the distributor or agent to fulfil them. Thought is needed both in terms of what you are seeking to achieve and how it

is to be achieved. If it is a case of using performance management to result in a justification for termination of the distributorship or agency agreement, it is important that a paper trail is laid. Equally it is important that what is sought from the distributor or agent is reasonable both in terms of scope and time. In the case of an agent, a repeated failure to comply with your reasonable requests can result in you being able to take advantage of the Commercial Agents Regulations (the law which protects agents) to avoid making a statutory compensation payment or reduce the amount which is paid in settlement. Similarly in the case of a distributor. Whilst English law does not provide expressly the same type of special legal protection given to agents, judgments given in a number of cases in the English courts over the last few years involving

thought to how you are going to service the customers in the distributor or agent’s territory following termination. Without careful planning you may find yourself in the situation where: Actions taken by you before termination literally give the game away and can result in the distributor or agent being able to turn the tables on you; you do not have a replacement distributor or agent (or sales representative) in place in order to continue to service the customers; or both! Also in the case of a distributorship agreement, do you know where the outgoing distributors’ customers are and how to contact them? Finally, take care. Whilst it is open to you to performance manage underperforming distributors or agents, it is equally open to savvy distributors and agents to performance manage their suppliers and principals so as to engineer an exit from the distributorship

distributors have hinted at such protection being given to terminated distributors. Equally the laws of a number of other countries provide special protection for distributors in a way which is directly analogous to that of agents.

or agency agreement to the maximum advantage of the distributor or agent!!

Even without this special protection, failure to properly performance manage a distributor can result in the distributor having a claim for damages for wrongful termination of the distributorship agreement. Crunch time, think about how you are going to get to where you want to be. Equally important is to give
