LITMUS FURNITURE FOUNDER RETIRES

Furniture technology specialist extends licensees

The founder of Litmus Furniture, sole UK and Irish agent for German bedroom manufacturer Wiemann, has retired. Peter Hewitt set up Litmus Furniture in 2001 as a business consultancy to furniture manufacturers after 10 years as MD of Dorlux Beds and in 2005 decided to look for a new opportunity to grow the business. Wiemann proved to be that opportunity. Back then the leading German bedroom manufacturer was operating on a small scale in the UK with a handful of independent retailers. In 12 years the UK business has grown 15-fold and now has accounts with major retailers, including John Lewis, Dreams and Bensons, as well as many independent retailers, including AIS and Minerva members. Commenting on his decision, Peter said: “It’s nearly four years since my son Simon joined the business with a view to taking over. He is now pretty much fully in charge and I just

feel that the time is right to hang up the car keys. “Looking back, I really enjoyed my time with Dorlux and I was very proud of being chairman of The Sleep Council – but there is no doubt I have gained the most personal satisfaction from taking a virtually unknown brand and product range into the UK market and growing into one of the UK’s leading bedroom suppliers and Wiemann’s biggest export market. “Along the way, I’ve met and worked with so many great people. I can’t thank them all enough for the opportunities – and the challenges – but most of all for the loyalty, support and friendships. It’s those personal relationships that are the most precious and most memorable.â€? Peter will still be involved in the background – looking after DGPLQ DQG ĆŽQDQFH IRU /LWPXV Furniture. Department store retailer Marks and Spencer has reported a ‘mixed quarter’ as Clothing and Home sales were down. According to its latest third quarter trading update for the 13 weeks to 30 December 2017, total group sales fell by 0.1% to ÂŁ3.1bn as UK sales on a like-for-like basis were down 1.4%. Within its Clothing and Home division, like-for-like sales fell 2.8% and represented ÂŁ1.1bn, whilst its food sales were also down 0.4% on a like-for-like basis. M&S said it had continued its Clothing and Home strategy of ‘restoring price integrity and improving everyday value’, adding that revenue grew both in-store and online over the weeks leading up to Christmas. However, the impact of ‘an unseasonal October’ resulted in an overall revenue decline, resulting in carrying over more stock into the December sale. Commenting on the results, Steve Rowe, chief executive said: “M&S had a mixed quarter with better Christmas trading in both EXVLQHVVHV JRLQJ VRPH ZD\ WR RĆŹVHW D ZHDN FORWKLQJ PDUNHW LQ October and ongoing underperformance in our Food like-for-like sales. Cabinet Maker has a welcome catch up with Highgrove Beds Group, who offered some advice on staying ahead in a challenging market.

A 15-year anniversary, site developments and a challenging economic market in the wake of the UK’s Brexit manoeuvring presented a mixed bag for Highgrove’s mostly positive 2017. With the pressure to continue pleasing numbers in sales combined with the increase of manufacturing costs, it’s safe to say it wasn’t going to be an easy ride. But with the brands now under the Highgrove umbrella, comprising of moresleep, Sanctum and Highgrove, and a successful approach into the mid- to high-end market, it appears to have been a fruitful year for the bed and mattresses business. Head of marketing, Shane Harding, said: “I think the post Brexit blues certainly had DQ LPSDFW RQ FRQVXPHU FRQƮGHQFH DQG this, coupled with the resulting doubledigit increase in raw material costs

made it a challenging year for retailers and manufacturers alike. Despite this, Highgrove Beds Group continues to increase market share and introduced a wide range of new products and services in 2017. New 2017 products included the recently launched Anniversary model aptly named Fifteen. It has proved popular with our independent stockists and equally with consumers who are buying this great value model in high numbers.” With an impressive turnover of £20m, the FRPSDQ\ LQMHFWLQJ SURƮWV EDFN LQWR WKH business is a catalyst for the strength and size it’s been turning into. Highgrove has had a £3m expansion during developments at the headquarters in west Yorkshire. In an increasingly fast moving market and a consumer appetite that seems to always crave something fresh, it’s imperative to stand out from the crowd and likewise to keep launching new products. Not only fresh; but fast, too. It’s no wonder Highgrove are building on their previous success, as they understand the need for speed. “Maintaining quality and service standards is key and our nationwide seven day Fastersleep express delivery ensures that our stockists can LPSURYH FDVK Ć°RZ WKURXJK PLQLPXP VWRFN UHTXLUHPHQWV +LJKJURYH RĆŹHUV WKH ZLGHVW choice of products and exceptional value and we recognise this as increasingly important to our future business success,â€? says Shane. 66 | 19th January 2018

While products, service and the market fashion are all high on the agenda, there’s no denying that the current state of the industry is on every manufacturer’s mind while implementing strategy to move forward. According to statistics using the CAGR (compound annual growth rate), the UK’s overall furniture industry is forecast to increase by 2.6% from 2017 to 2021. 2017 saw a revenue growth for bedroom furniture of just 0.5%, most likely explained by the public’s uncertainty surrounding Brexit and the increase in the cost of raw materials. However, according to these statistics, bedroom furniture revenue growth for 2018 is expected to improve to 3.8%. * So, while there has been a slump in consumer spending, there could yet be reason for optimism. COT IT S AT R A Explains the New European Standard for Cot Mattresses EN 16890:2017.

Suppliers of cot mattresses in the UK now have a choice of standards to use: the British BS 1877-10:2011+A1:2012 and the new European EN 16890:2017, to show that the item is “safe” as required by the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) (2001/95/EC). Fast forward a short while and Thomas has not only helped address the aforementioned gap, but also brought TCS, which has been widely regarded as a specialist manufacturer of upholstery for close to three decades, to the UK. COUNTDOWN TO Cabinet Maker took the opportunity to catch up with Sherborne Upholstery’s Chris Walker as the business details some exciting new developments but also paid tribute to some of its successes in what was a challenging year for all up and down the industry. One of which was the installation of new machinery – a project that took three years to complete – as Chris proudly explains: “Machinery was the biggest achievement for 2017 that’s been three years in the making, before that all came to fruition last year. I’m certain we now have the most modern furniture plant there is in the country, with the investment that’s gone in there.”

Sherborne Upholstery’s Chris Walker reflects on a past year of challenges and achievements as well as hinting at what to expect during 2018.

Highlighting the importance of the right product, Chris revealed: “We really live and die through our product launches. We don’t advertise ourselves around about in any way. Having traded for over 15 years, the sales agency and importer for leather and fabric upholstery is mastering the industry’s favourites with swivel and motion recliners in high demand.

Glancing back over 2017 before eyeing up a 2018 with huge opportunities, Emily Mihailovich gives Cabinet Maker an update on what’s been happening at GFA over the last year.

Brothers Tim Painter and James Painter are directors of the business, after Tim acquired directorship of a Christie Tyler manufacturing plant in 1979. Many years on, James is now sole owner of the company, with older brother Tim taking a step back from the helm. James heads product development, Far East liaison and sales, backed by a loyal team of sales agents covering all parts of the UK.

“We had a very strong beginning to the year but then it slowed in the summer due to the good weather and economic uncertainty before, during and after the snap election. However, overall it was a great year for GFA and we are looking forward to what 2018 will bring,” says Emily. There are almost 50 products in their extensive furnishing catalogue going into

These can all be found on the GFA website. “In 2017 we launched a brand new, fresh and exciting website, which has been a great way to feature our lifestyle shots and really give our products the justice they deserve,â€? Emily continues. The business has deigned to constantly improve in an overall very competitive industry and during 2017 GFA moved into D QHZ EXLOGLQJ DQG H[SDQGHG RĆąFHV DQG spare parts warehouses. Exciting plans are still in progress to create a YouTube channel that will provide instructions on how to assemble GFA chairs. “We are heavily focused on providing a culture of continuous improvement and have invested in a project manager to support our goals.â€? As for most in the industry, 2017 didn’t come and go without its hurdles to overcome, admits Emily. “The continued uncertainty of Brexit negotiations and unprecedented price increases from our factories in China were a challenge.â€? The group remains hopeful that a period of VWDELOLW\ ZLOO KDYH D SRVLWLYH HĆŹHFW RYHU WKH next year and bring further opportunities for the business. “James is investing heavily in GFA employees and upskilling through formal training courses in key areas of the business.â€? 102 | 19th January 2018

These will be displayed at the January Furniture Show just around the corner from the main GFA stand. Constant innovation in an industry such as furniture manufacture should be an expected part of the every day grind in order to stay in the front lines for furnishings and home improvements. STAIN FREE TECHNOLOGY - EASY TO CLEAN FABRICS - MEETING THE COMFORT STANDARD OF AUTHENTIC QUALITY TEXTILES 104 | 19th January 2018

The textile industry has always been a market with longstanding traditions. From 3400 B.C. we have been spinning and weaving yarns to make beautiful and comfortable fabrics. It is only in recent decades, that technical advances have started taking place, with the likes of ScotchguardTM, Gore-Tex, etc. The main reason why these technological developments have never made it to your sofa before is simple: comfort with a lovely soft touch. So why would you ruin that with fabric treatments? You could just as easily go for leather. Well not anymore.

WHEN AND HOW TO CHOOSE Yo u h a v e d e c i d e d you would like to run a high impact sale to celebrate a new development in your business or just to drive some trade through the doors. Yo u h a v e a c h o i c e ; do you try something on your own or do you consult a sales promotion specialist ?

112 | 19th January 2018

Most retailers who want to do a “Daniel Lynch will proceed as follows: 1. Hire the Lynch Sales Company, the originators of the Sales Promotion business. 2. Create something new of their own or often produce largely derivative material. 3. Find an alternative company who will try and replicate the Lynch formula. Going It Alone Creating original marketing plans takes time and care, deciding how much to spend in each particular channel in your market is crucial and intricate. To really understand all the media opportunities in your area you need to thoroughly research the reach and audience of each. Extrapolating that data, deciding what is relevant and helpful is complicated, particularly with all the emerging platforms available. But once you have

completed this, prioritised the most appropriate media and scheduled this into a plan you still need to create original and appropriate marketing material for the complete event. If you have accomplished all this to your satisfaction you will also need a plan B in case not everything you have planned – goes to plan. To do all this thoroughly, takes time and experience. If you get it right, you will be busy with customers and then administering the additional sales that they provide. We describe this process as being a bit like a snake swallowing a mouse. Often businesses are caught RƏ JXDUG E\ WKH YROXPHV JHQHUDWHG they have just not planned for it. The consequence of this is that the event quickly runs out of steam as resources are diverted and opportunities missed. In my book there is nothing more damaging than an event that fails to deliver value and a good level of service for the customer.

RE TAIL|LYNCH SOME FEEDBACK FROM OUR RECENT CLIENTS: -

Creating original marketing plans takes time and care Hiring a promotional partner. So you decide you would like some help with all this. You could contact an advertising agency, they should have the competencies you need to advise on media, creative ideas and may have existing relationships with many of the media instruments you should be considering. However, many agencies rely on commission payments from their media partners, so you need to be certain WKDW WKH\ DUH QRW EHLQJ XQGXO\ LQĆ°XHQFHG E\ their need for fees. You also need to be sure that your promotional partner understands your business and your objectives. Retail is GLĆŹHUHQW WR OHLVXUH DQG VHOOLQJ FDUV LV D ZRUOG away from selling sofas. Many retailers choose to consult a promotional specialist but how do you pick the right one for your business? Do your research. • Do they have an up to date website? • Do they have recent testimonials or are they quoting past achievements, from more benign trading periods? • Are their testimonials published in full? • Do they employ modern marketing techniques such as social media in their own marketing? If not, why not? • Are they using their own methodology or simply regurgitating other people’s? • What do their coordinators do? Once you have researched your options it is always a good idea to speak to a client who has worked with one or more agencies, hear it from the “horse’s mouthâ€? as it were. 114 | 19th January 2018

Hiring Lynch: The Joseph P. In the past, Lynch has had to turn them down because they are simply too small to justify us sending a Sales Conductor and Sales Personnel into their store. Now, after much research and development, Lynch is able to provide a scaled down version of their copyrighted Sales Events, which includes everything a retailer needs to have a successful Lynch Sale, minus our on-site management team, and at a reduced cost to the retailers.

LAST WORD VIC SMITH, VIC SMITH BEDS

IT WOULD BE LOVELY IF THE NATIONAL BED FEDERATION WOULD SET OUT SOME CLEAR DEFINING GUIDELINES. Manufacturers and retailers don’t work together and clearly know what’s in the mattresses they are selling to the public. Where the ƮOOLQJV JR WR PDNH XS \RXU PDWWUHVV RQ top of your spring units – be it Open Coil, Miracoil, Zoned, Pocket Spring, Tablet Spring and Foam Springs or the new German Wooden springs, the biggest problem is untrained smarmy Sales people giving false misleading information to customers to get the sales.

If you have X amount of silk, a minimum of Y, because otherwise with an ingredient list, it would just be confusing, you’ll have some manufacturers using a minimum recommended amount of silk wool or cashmere that would not weigh up to a FRPSHWLWRUV VLQJOH OD\HU RI Æ®OOLQJ

After all if we have a National Bed Federation, isn’t this precisely what they should be doing?
