Scouts Night Owl Camp 1st Farnsfield Scouts joined over two hundred other members of the Scouts this October in the annual Night Owl incident hike and camp at nearby Sherbrooke campsite in Calverton. The Scouts worked hard in a night walk of six miles through the countryside around Calverton. Teams consisted of no more than seven young people and involved seven incident bases where the scouts took on some challenges in the dark. The young people had lots of fun and worked hard hiking over newly ploughed fields at night, while map navigating their way from point to point. The Scouts spent an evening before the event preparing themselves for their walk;

becoming familiar with survival bags, first aid kits, warm clothing, sensible footwear and waterproofs. The young people had to carry their own water and spare clothing in order to be prepared, in case of themselves or a fellow walker getting cold or wet in the winter conditions. During the day the Scouts worked towards their Outdoor Challenge award with fire lighting and cooking on open fires. They did a range of activities including archery and sledging on the campsites sledge run! Farnsfield Scouts meet weekly during term time at the Farnsfield Village Centre. If you would like to find out more, please contact Group Scout Leader Chris Blockley, on 07779324341.

Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy celebrates good Ofsted result Inspectors say, “…the rate of pupils’ progress has increased”, and that pupils used words such as, “amazing’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘caring” to describe their school. Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy is celebrating the news that its Ofsted inspection has shown that it continues to be Good,-with significant signs of improvement since its previous Good report. Published on the 30th October, the report says of The Flying High Trust and the school’s Head Teacher, Mrs Anne Ingle that, “…together you have effectively led improvements to the quality of teaching, learning and behaviour across the school. Poppy displays across Sherwood I am writing this open letter to congratulate the residents of Sherwood on the amount of time, effort and organisation they have put to making poppy displays to commemorate the Armistice and the end of First World War.

As I have travelled around the constituency, I have been struck by how each village has, in their own way, created something that poignantly and properly acknowledges the loss and remembers the sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom, not just in the first world war, but in every conflict since. In the weeks leading up to the 11th I have visited as many memorials, displays and

services as I could, and whether a knitted poppy net, a school Wall of remembrance or a collection of lamppost poppies, each display was as moving and unique as the last.

As such, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to each Parish Council, Church, Community Group, School, Organization and all the individuals that have created such powerful displays of remembrance across Sherwood. You are a credit not only to our constituency, but to our County and our Country. Mark Spencer MP

Blidworth Remembrance event We held a Remembrance Day event on Sunday 11th November and despite the chilly weather, the turnout was very good. The rain abated for the duration of the service which included the laying of wreaths, readings and hymns.

Wednesday 5th December at 12noon at the Blidworth Welfare. Not only will our special guests enjoy a lovely three course lunch but they will also be able to enjoy some beautiful music from local talent including the amazing Blidworth Oaks Choir.

Our Christmas Event and light switch on happened on Saturday 24th November and was well attended by all. We had a great variety of craft and gift stalls, as well live music by local musicians, Blidworth Welfare Brass Band and Blidworth Oaks Choir. Our Santa proved very popular with the children who all received a selection box. All the Christmas lights came on at 4pm and the village looked very festive.

With the aim of winning the prestigious ‘Gold’ award for ‘Bloom’ next year, we need your help. We are recruiting any volunteers that are willing to help us with planting, weeding etc. If anyone would like to volunteer or sponsor a tub or basket in memory of a loved one then please contact Cllr Atherton at the Parish Office.

Our Pensioners Christmas Party is all set for

We hope that you enjoy the Christmas lights around the village and we wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a lovely New Year!

View from the doorstep Xmas is red and green It has been a busy time for me since I was selected as the Labour candidate for Sherwood earlier this year. I have met thousands of voters to hear what issues concern you all and we have knocked on hundreds of doors in Sherwood from Ollerton to Blidworth and the surrounding villages. The main issues that come up are the state of the NHS, pressures on our schools, Brexit, police funding and cuts to local councils. What also comes across is a lack of faith in politics generally and the role elected representatives can play in improving our communities. This is disappointing but is not unexpected given the manner in which politics has been conducted over recent years and how

the Brexit debate has been argued. I would however urge everyone to consider what the respective parties have to say about the issues that affect their lives and express an opinion at the ballot box. I strongly believe that our system of representative democracy is the best model for running a country and the strength of the system rests on you voting for your representative at local and national level.

The alternative is that you lose your voice and politicians become more detached from their constituents. I am keen to hear from you so please let me know if you would like to discuss anything. To contact Jerry Hague please email: jerryhaguesh@gmail.com

Abbey Gates Primary School Perfect PGL On the 20th of October 2018, year 6 went on a fabulous residential to PGL. They took part in a variety of amazing activities like rifle shooting, quad biking, survival training, rock climbing, a game called ambush (hide and seek in the dark) and much more! Ellie from year 6 said, ‘It was a good experience for all of year six. There were loads of fun activities. My favourite activity would have to be Jacob’s ladder. I was super proud of myself as I reached the top! Our instructor was lovely.’ It was a great trip and everyone had an absolutely brilliant time. The teachers were so proud of everyone. Walking like Egyptians On Tuesday Year 4 took part in their family assembly about Ancient Egypt. It was amazing! There were songs, dancing, they even sprayed us with water, and they showed how to prepare a mummy – shocking! The children were fantastic, we’re sure we have some budding actors in our midst. A great big well done to Miss Nash as it was her very first family assembly and we think she did a great job - as did Mrs Wilson, we’re sure she had a hand in the amazing artwork. Key stage two football team have received a letter confirming that they are playing a match against the other local school – Ravenshead C of E. This should be a great game as always when these two teams meet. In addition to this, the team are due to play a match against Mapplewells Primary School – we feel this should be an amazing match too. The team are all very excited to play these games. Jude and Leo Remembrance On Friday the 9th November the amazing Abbey Gates choir and the Year six children went up to the precinct to celebrate the people who gave up their tomorrow for our today, our brave service men and women. We sang some beautiful songs along with the Ravenshead Church of England School to bring back memories of our beloved ancestors. As usual our singing was exquisite. Lest we forget. Does holly epitomise Xmas for you? as it does or me. Shiny green leaves and bright red berries To cheer the dark days and the decline of the tree. The leaves have all fallen, the branches are bare. But the holly ,amongst others, cheers us. Wherever you look it is there. So Xmas for me is red and green. Not purple or silver or blue. I love other colours usually ,but Xmas is red and green. ©️ Elaine Price

December gardening with Timmermans

The snow was falling and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse….That’s because everyone is in the garden! Rosy cheeked, tools in hand and wellies on feet…because as we all know, there is always a job or two to be found in the garden, even at this time of year and besides…who’s to say you can’t keep a bottle of something warm and festive in the potting shed for just such an occasion? I know I certainly do...(hic)…and top tip, any tipple can be festive as long as you stick a bauble and a bow on it…just saying. You can thank me later for that one. If you have any climbing roses at home, now is a great time to prune them and train in any new growth. As with any pruning, start with removing the 3 D’s… dead, damaged and diseased material and work from there. Reduce any lateral growth (side shoots) down to about a third, then tie in any new growth to your framework ready for next year. Also make sure you gather up any fallen rose leaves from

around your bushes and dispose of, as these can harbour diseases and fungus over winter such as black spot. Prepare for cold weather and harsh frosts. Earmark any tender or half hardy plants and shrubs for either moving to a more sheltered, frost free position or fleecing throughout the coldest weather. If you’ve got any holly bushes that can be trimmed, then why not use these offcuts to create some garlands and wreathes. Keep your offcuts in a bucket of water until you are ready to use them as this will keep them fresh and hydrated.

Wondering how to add a bit of winter colour, scent and interest to the garden? Then why not think about planting up some winter containers with hardy cyclamen, primroses pansies or daisies. And for those looking for shrubs, then there are winter wonders such as Sarcococca (sweet box) or Hamamelis (witch hazel) to name but a few that will give you the most glorious scent during the colder months.

And as always, however you are enjoying your garden this month, even if it is from your comfiest chair with said tipple in hand (If you are I’ll let you off this time, but only because it’s the festive season!) then have yourself a wonderful time and I’ll see you all again next year. Timmermans Garden Centre, Lowdham Ln, Woodborough,

Moving home at Christmas You’ve found your dream home, your mortgage is approved and your solicitor calls with news of your December completion date. But instead of feeling excited, you wonder just how you are going to move home and organise Christmas all at the same time. In December 2017 more than 60,000 firsttime buyer and home-mover mortgages were completed. That’s around eight per cent of all house moves each year taking place in the run up to Christmas. NHBC, the UK’s leading warranty provider for new homes, is offering all home movers some tips to make your move this December less daunting: 1.Tell Santa If you are moving home with children your top priority will be to let Santa know. The Post Office will give you his address, and while you’re there, organise for your post to be redirected. Also, pop your new address details into your Christmas cards, saving you money on postage.

2.Christmas presents Get ahead by buying and wrapping all your presents before you move and store them at a friend’s house.Don’t forget to add an extra gift just for them as a thank you! 3.Countdown to moving day Keep your children involved by using an advent calendar as a countdown to moving day. 4.Packing Moving in December doesn’t mean you have to forget all about feeling festive. Clearly label your Christmas decoration packing boxes.Ask the removal company to put the boxes in the bathroom as this will make them easy to find so you can prioritise decorating your new home. 5.Decorating your new home You don’t need to make your house look like Santa’s Grotto to feel Christmassy.A few glittery touches will make Christmas in your new home one to remember. Focus your efforts on the spaces where you will spend most time – a family room, or

perhaps the kitchen-diner.If you don’t have time to decorate a tree, think about wrapping a garland around the banister and hang fairy lights over the fireplace. 6.The scent of Christmas There’s nothing like the smell of Christmas to get you in the festive spirit.Consider lighting candles with the scent of cinnamon, mulled spices and oranges to create a warm and cosy feeling. 7.Meet the neighbours Now you’ve moved in and got some decorations up, it’s the perfect time to meet your new neighbours.Invite them round for some mulled wine and mince pies; you can ask them for tips on things to do in your local area too! Christmas is traditionally a time when family and friends get together, so above all, just enjoy the day because the unpacking can wait!

Roaring loud to give hope When a baby is born all of the visions and plans flash through your thoughts. Their first steps, first words, first day at school and in this case the first kick of that football! When my 6 year old son Nayte was born all of these hopes and dreams for him overwhelmed me. Little did I know that in three short months time the floor beneath our feet would be ripped from under us, leaving us with just fear and concerns for Nayte’s future. Nayte was diagnosed with the fatal bacterial strain of Meningitis. Thus followed a lengthy stay in hospital where I watched my son have seizure after seizure, contract a heart infection and murmur, and even more long line infections. Nayte’s worst seizure lasted 17 minutes long at which point I was told by the Doctors to prepare for the worst as his brain would have suffered from oxygen deprivation. Further brain scans did confirm that he had in fact suffered from damage to the front right lobe of his brain. I was told that this would affect the left hand side of his body. I was also devastatingly informed that it was highly probable that my beautiful boy would never walk or talk and was also told that it was likely that he would lose his sight and hearing!

games of ball, eventually little by little I could see improvements. Although Nayte’s eye sight was deteriorating and he couldn’t hear low frequencies my boy was walking. The talking came a little later at the age of two. With having the brain damage Nayte had his own little quirky ways, OCD where he couldn’t stand dirt or anything being out of place and one of the major obstacles we had to conquer was the fact that he did not like meeting new people or human touch. With his love of football and the difficulties I wanted him to overcome it led me to make one of the best decisions I have ever made. I contacted Daniel Brickles from Blidworth Bengals FC, I was instantly put at ease by his relaxed coaching approach and experience of working with children like Nayte through his career as a sports coach within a Primary School. The next couple of weeks Nayte was made a part of the squad and in turn this I would see an amazing transformation in him on his journey within the Bengals family. Over time Nayte was able to learn to interact better with children and adults. Watching the team hug and jump on each other in celebration has helped him tremendously with contact. He now is part of those joyous hugs and lives in the moment when these opportunities arrive.

So began Nayte’s long journey to recovery, I would constantly exercise his left hand side, with bouncers, walkers, jigsaw and

One of Nayte’s greatest achievements was being selected and officially signed on as one of the under 7s team and welcomed with open arms by his coaches and team mates. Watching him grow strength and strength in each game is overwhelming. Nayte also has private one 2 one football sessions which has bought him on in leaps and bounds. With practice and a game

MARK Spencer, Sherwood’s Member of Parliament has thanked all residents that came to his public surgery in Blidworth over the weekend. The surgery, held at Blidworth Community Church on Saturday, was organised by the MP and allowed residents and constituents to meet with the MP to discuss any issues with him directly. The surgery is part of the MP’s long-standing commitment to hold public, face to face surgeries with constituents at various locations across Sherwood Constituency.

As well as holding regular public surgeries in Hucknall and Ollerton, Mark also holds ‘roaming’ surgeries across the constituency, so that all residents have a chance to meet with Mark. The last three of Mark’s surgeries took place at Woodborough, Farnsfield and Ravenshead. Discussing his surgeries, Mr Spencer said: “Surgeries are an easy way for me to sit down with residents or groups face to face, and hear their concerns or issues directly.” “I think that it’s really important that MP’s keep in touch with their constituents

each week this team really have become our family, not only do we all attend the matches, fund raisers and do all our football activities together but we also socialize out of football too. There are regular Bengals Sunday dinners after games; each and every parent helps out with travelling and childcare at matches. Bengals have become such a huge part of our life and have helped Nayte achieve things I never thought he would. I honestly can not thank them enough. Here’s to a bright future with the club we LOVE, Blidworth Bengals, “LET’S ROAR!” Written by Sherneen Hughes- Parent

Local MP holds public meeting to help Blidworth residents as much as possible, so as well as holding ‘drop-ins’ at my office, my bi-weekly newsletter, my updates on Facebook, my pieces for the local newspapers and knocking on doors in the constituency, surgeries are another great way for me to keep up with what’s happening across Sherwood.” If you would like to book on to Mark Spencer MP’s next surgery, or arrange a ‘dropin’ at his office, please contact Mark and his team at mark.spencer.mp@parliament.uk.

Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Our monthly talk for November was entitled, 'Bolsover - the Hidden History' and was given by a historian well known at our society's meetings, Ian Morgan. Ian is an accomplished speaker who illustrated his presentation with many excellent photographs. The name 'Bolsover' is thought to be a corruption of an old Saxon name. The fascinating history of Bolsover is centred on its castle which stands on a prominent ridge and dominates the low lying ground to the west towards Hardwick Hall.

that cost him most of his yearly income. In 1644, during the Civil War, it was laid siege to by a Parliamentary force which fired a warning shot over the castle which persuaded the Royalists of the castle to surrender. According to Ian, some locals say that the canon 'ball' going 'over' gave rise to its name! Ian also told us of some of the hidden history of the town including about the 17th century buildings that are part of the town. Some are known as 'crook houses' where a bent tree trunk has been used to support the structure of the building. In fact there are twenty one grade I or II buildings in the town. The Parish Church of St Mary and St Laurence is also of great interest. It is built on the site of a church first erected in 656AD. It is one of only two in the country that have a 'broad shouldered' or 'broached-spire'. During excavations under the tower a medieval bell pit used for casting bells in-situ was found. For the final part of his most interesting presentation, Ian showed a series of 'then and now' pictures. He was thanked by vice-chair Dale and received much deserved applause. After the coffee break Jayne showed a film of the 2007 Blessing of the Blidworth Parish War Memorial. The memorial includes all those who have fallen in conflict from Blidworth, Rainworth and Fishpool, since the beginning of the First World War.

However this structure fell derelict in medieval times and the present castle was started by William Cavendish of Welbeck in 1612. Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum

On Tuesday evening, 2nd October, we were pleased to welcome 30 Bilsthorpe Cubs and their leaders and on Monday, 22nd October, two Members gave a talk to a class at Bilsthopre “Flying High” Academy on “How Our Village Used to Be”.

On Saturday, 27th October, two Members attended a Coal Heritage Forum, organised by Dr. David Amos at Papplewick Pumping Station, after which, visitors were given an interesting tour of the Pumping Station. On Thursday, 1st November, Members and their families enjoyed a Group Visit to Mansfield Fire Station Museum, where we were warmly welcomed by Volunteers, Terry and Marilyn Spalding, who jointly gave us an informative guided tour, including a chance to “Drive and Crew” a vintage fire engine. The Fire Station Museum is full of wonderfully restored

exhibits and is well worth a visit and is open by appointment. Visit their website for further details. Thank you to everyone who supported our stands at Bilsthorpe “Flying High “ Academy Firework Display and Newark “Vintage Tractor” Show, respectively.

On Friday, 9th November, several Members were privileged to attend Bilsthorpe “Flying High” Academy’s Service of Remembrance, which took place in their newly created “Garden of Memory”. During the Service, conducted by Rev’d Anna Alls, the children performed a beautiful recitation of “In Flanders Fields” and presented our chairman, George Cooper and Bilsthorpe British Legion Chairman, Keeley Ward, with copies of projects they have researched on four servicemen from Bilsthorpe , who lost their lives in the

Great War. The children’s projects will be on display in the Museum for several weeks for visitors to see. On Sunday, 11th December, several Members also attended the village Remembrance Service at Bilsthorpe Welfare, followed by the parade to the War Memorial, led by a Pipe Major. Thanks to all concerned for two beautifully organised events. On Sunday, 23rd December, Wednesday, 26th December and Sunday, 30th December, the Museum will be closed for the Festive Break. We shall re-open on Wednesday, 2nd January, 2019 and thereafter for our normal Winter Opening Hours of Wednesdays and Sundays from 11.00 am until 3.00 pm. For out-of-hours enquiries or to purchase a 2019 Calendar, please ring 01623 – 870512.

Bilsthorpe Garden Club news Our Meeting on Wednesday, 17th October, was an interesting, illustrated talk on “The World of Ferns” by Neil Timm of the Fern Nursery at Binbrook, Lincs. Neil showed us many different varieties of ferns with information on cultivation, propagation and

the preferred sorts of habitat favoured by each type. Afterwards, Members had an opportunity to purchase plants and Neil answered questions. The raffle was drawn, with the first prizewinner being Linda Bee.

Our Rotary Club actively supports many of our local schools with various projects and one such example is a “Story Writing Competition for Year 6” that we organised and sponsored this year. The competition was supported by 2 of our local schools; Blidworth Oaks Primary and CofE Primary, Ravenshead.

luminous creature stood proudly. A horse with a horn. “A unicorn” breathed Ben. Its body was blacker than coal, its head was half covered with a greyish mane. A dull blue eye peered on the other side with a long S-shape scar on the same side. A cry of anger shot from its mouth. In fear the children squeezed back through the tunnel.

Our Meeting on Wednesday, December 19th will be a Members’ Christmas Quiz and Supper Evening at Southwell Garden Centre.

The Rotary Club of Ravenshead and Blidworth

Last month the winner from The CofE Ravenshead School, Georgina Brown’s story was in print on these pages. This month, Holly Bramwell has written the Winning Story from Blidworth Oaks Primary, here for you to read and enjoy; There had been a wild, violent storm during the night along the Cornish coast. Deafening thunder and awesome flashes of lightening had kept the two children awake. Large waves had crashed up the beach of a remote bay and into a cave at the foot of the cliffs. By morning the storm had given way to a dull, grey sky. The children ventured outside to see what had happened. Looking down from the clifftops they could see a strange glow coming from the mouth of the cave. Time to investigate! As the waves calmed down, dawn was breaking. Beth and Ben, twins, trailed down to the mouth of the cave to investigate the mysterious glow, clamouring through a small tunnel, Beth heard the clap of hooves heading towards her. The tunnel widened into a small room with a hole in the ceiling. Looking down a

“Owww!” screamed Ben. A glimpse of shiny white teeth sinking into Ben’s leg was missed by Beth who realised her twin was missing. “Ben” she screamed, before climbing back again to where Ben was. His leg was still trapped via the Unicorns teeth. Beth heard a distant rumble of thunder. Dawn had risen. The Unicorn stood still, its body turned to stone. Ben struggled free and fell to the ground, he limped towards Beth. A sudden load explosion deafened both Beth and Ben. Ben cautiously turned around to see nothing, nothing remained, Ben felt for Beth’s hand, it was icy cold with fear….. Suddenly they were home. Ben somehow was in Beth’s bed gripping her hand. He felt his leg and winced as he felt blood and large teeth marks remaining on his leg. Where had they come from? Slowly Beth turned over to face Ben. She opened one dull, blue eye and that was when Ben noticed the long S-shaped scar on her cheek…..

Very Well-done Holly.

Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy celebrates Good Ofsted result (Continued from page 1) The school’s pupils also came in for particular praise in the report which says, “Pupils are inquisitive and enjoy talking to visitors and showing them their work, of which they are proud. Children in the early years are already demonstrating sustained concentration in their activities and were excited to discuss the theme of their learning,” and “…pupils were engrossed in their learning and described their lessons as ‘fun’.” Stating that children are well prepared for the next stage of their education, the report said, “They make good progress from their starting points and have developed positive attitudes to their learning.” The report’s author said that “Pupils were keen to tell me how safe they feel in school” and found that any barriers to pupils’ learning was tackled ‘head on’ by Leaders, with a ‘…purposeful and rich curriculum’, with pupils describing their school to inspectors using words like, “‘amazing’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘caring’.” Head Teacher Anne Ingle said she is pleased with the outcome. “A great result! We are delighted that the report recognises the commitment and hard work of the staff and our wonderful children which has driven the school to become the success that it is. “We would like to thank the community for its continued encouragement, and a special thanks to parents who are partners in this success. Their untiring support of the children and the staff has created a family environment that has improved the experiences of all of the children at the school.” Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy Parents told inspectors that the school is ‘nurturing’ and a hub of the community with one parent commenting, “The new headteacher has brought a new excitement for my children and they can’t wait to see what surprises the teaching staff will come up with next.” Parents also told inspectors that the school has an ‘open and friendly nature’ and that they find the Head Teacher and staff to be ‘approachable and supportive of their children’s needs’. One parent said, “The staff can never do enough for the children and

parents and are always happy to help when you need to have a chat.” The reports states that improvements at the school are driven by school Leaders who have worked hard to raise the aspirations of the pupils and families, providing focused support and accurate and regular monitoring which has led to a ‘considerable impact on pupils’ progress and attainment.’ It says that “Adults use every opportunity to develop the children’s speech, language and communication skills so that they are now receiving a high-quality start in the early years.” Head Teacher Anne Ingle says that the school does not intend to rest on its laurels, but to work hard to address any next steps the school can take. “We will take the time to celebrate this result and then it will be back to work, aiming to be the best school that we can be!”

Are You Protecting Your Eyesight? Local expert corneal surgeons Professor Dua and Dr. Dalia Said explain: As we age, many of us begin to need reading glasses even if we’ve never needed glasses before. This is due to the lenses in our eye naturally losing flexibility over time, making it more difficult to adjust our focus from objects far away to those nearby. There are a few common eye problems and diseases that come with age, such as, dry eye, glaucoma, detached retina, macular degeneration and cataracts. Usually, these can be treated, controlled or reversed. There are a few things you can do in your daily life to reduce the risk of developing age-related vision problems: Protect your eyes from UV rays We all know not to look directly at the sun even during an eclipse, and the damage this can cause to our eyes. But even indirect sunlight can cause damage. Wear sunglasses with UV protection to keep your eyes safe.

Avoid digital eye strain Staring at screens can cause digital eye strain. Ensure you take regular breaks from looking at electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers. You can follow the 2020-20 rule - spend twenty seconds, look at something twenty feet away, every twenty minutes to stop your eyes from tiring. Most computers, printers and scanners eject hot air when used. This creates a microenvironment around us, an envelope of warm air, that dries our eyes. This is compounded by the fact than when reading or concentrating, we blink less allowing the eyes to dry. Stay active Studies have shown, those who lead an inactive lifestyle tend to lose more vision as they age, as opposed to those who are active. So keep moving! Stop smoking Smoking greatly increases the risk of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Stopping smoking (at any age) can greatly reduce your risk of developing these issues.

Regular eye tests Even if you have never had glasses before, ensure you are attending regular eye tests as you age, to catch any issues when they first appear. Early detection is key. Can you imagine life without glasses?? It may well be possible. Find out more from your local experts. Professor Dua and Dr Said perform a wide range of corneal and refractive treatments with LaserVision at BMI The Park Hospital in Arnold. As part of the opening, the store has already recruited four local staff to join the team, which will be headed up by manager Claire Fox. The brand-new store has five optical consulting rooms, a contact lens area and a dedicated sound-proof room for audiology. It boasts all the latest high-tech optical equipment including an advanced eye scanning system which helps to detect several eye conditions, including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy. OCT scans are additional to the normal eye test and can be requested when the appointment is booked or when the customer arrives in store. The cost of this scan (£10) is not covered by the NHS examination.

Have Success in 2019 with your Resolutions and Goals After the festive season, perhaps you’ve been overindulging in food and alcohol and may now be making some Resolutions and goals for 2019. This year why not make a commitment to yourself to actually do something about that problem you’ve been putting to the back of your mind for a while. Here are some tips for making resolutions: 1. Just make one resolution at a time. You have more chance of success if you channel your attention into changing just one aspect of your behaviour. 2. Think about what you are prepared to change and focus on what you want to achieve. 3. Forget about previous resolutions you’ve made – if you failed before you just weren’t in the right mind-set and that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen again. 4. Think about what you really want out of life. 5. Write down your goals and break it down into a series of steps that are realistic and time-based.

6. Talk to your friends and family about what you want to achieve, that way you’re more likely to get support from them. 7. Stay motivated and focused on the benefits of what you will achieve. 8. Give yourself a small reward when you take another step towards your ultimate goal. This will help to motivate you and will give you a sense of progress. 9. Keeping a journal or spreadsheet of your progress will also increase your motivation. 10. You might go back to your old habits from time to time, but treat this as a ‘blip’ or temporary set-back rather than seeing it as a reason for giving up. Lose Weight – we have a five week programme to help you achieve your goal weight Stop Smoking –one of our therapy sessions could be all you need to help you stop smoking Stop Anxiety and Negative Thoughts – let us explain why you’re feeling negative and anxious and how we can help you conquer your fears and panic attacks.

Stop or cut down on alcohol – we help and support you to moderate or stop drinking alcohol. All year round we help people overcome a variety of different issues and problems. People usually come to us because they want to change some aspect of their lives and find it difficult using will power. We help people by using Hypnotherapy and other treatments that we use here at the Clem and Margaret Turner Therapy Practice. We are here to help you achieve your goals. All you have to do is pick up the phone and talk to us – let us explain to you how we can guide you into becoming a ‘New You’ this year. We wish you all a Safe, Healthy and Happy New Year! Dressed for all occasions For those acquainted with Blidworth Menswear, it's no surprise when you walk through the door of the Old Chapel on Dale Lane, Blidworth, and are greeted by a fully-loaded menswear store, which could only be rivalled by a trip to a city. Filled to the rafters with everything needed for a dapper gentleman, the business has undertaken a major transformation over the past two and a half years. From the full production High Street suit manufacturer, Guy Warwick, through to a fully-stocked factory shop, when production moved overseas, Blidworth Menswear, supplier of award-winning brands and contemporary men's suits, has emerged from its chrysalis to become the one-stop menswear shop that it is today. The transformation is thanks to Glynis Staddon who has been on this journey since

the early days, when she worked with the previous owners to ensure success with a high level of customer service and product knowledge. Taking the business from the place where a dad would buy his work suits, to the thriving supplier of Marc Darcy, Scott By The Label, Skopes, Lloyd Attree And Smith, and Ikon, to name a few, Glynis and her staff offer a service that provides a full male wedding package. It includes fitted three-piece suits and separates, through to shirts, shoes, ties and matching top pocket handkerchiefs, not forgetting cufflinks and braces, plus a cap and overcoat if required. Wedding parties can take advantage of a 'Groom Goes Free' offer when eight adult suits are purchased. Steamforce Alterations, on-site tailors, can

reat food is obviously paramount, but the atmosphere of the restaurant can make or break your evening.

This fabulous hostelry, best described as a gastro pub with rooms, dates back to 1730 and absolutely wraps itself around you from the minute you walk through the door. The Black Bull has ambience by the bucket, whether you're dining, drinking or popping in for a bar snack; which just happen to be as great as the restaurant food! And it’s family friendly.

As a free house, the bar serves stout, bitter, mild, lagers; including five cask ales selected from Nottinghamshire’s finest brewers, a selection of ciders and over 50 types of gin. There's an extensive choice of spirits and a large wine selection from around the world. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the main bar and the small dining room. It’s an ideal venue for a family night out, a catch up with friends, a business lunch, or to mark a family milestone; great for a small gathering or a special occasion.

The restaurant was named ‘best out of town’ at the Nottingham Post food & drink awards and chefs Lewis & Craig enjoyed celebrity status, sharing the limelight at the Great Food & Drink Festival with TV chefs such as James Martin.

The chefs, wherever they can, prefer to use local, seasonal ingredients; if you want to enjoy some of their wonderful creations, book one of their taster evenings and watch the website for other speciality evening they do such as gin or wine tasting.

Whilst the chefs are really inventive with both modern and classic cuisine, they appreciate that it’s not for everyone; so they run these dishes alongside classic family favourites like fish and chips and steak and ale pie, priced not to break the piggy bank. Pizza is served directly from their monster of a wood fired oven and is absolutely not to be missed - be sure not to miss their daily specials.

A relatively new arrival at the Black Bull is returning chef Lucy Varnava - Ukraine born Lucy’s CV includes making afternoon tea for Ukrainian ‘royalty’.

Not surprisingly Lucy has now added afternoon tea to the Black Bull’s repertoire, served from 12pm – 4pm daily except Sundays; the restaurant really lends itself to something so traditional; it’s a real treat and makes a really great gift.

The Bull upstairs is now open to accommodate guests for bed & breakfast. Quirky en-suite bedrooms have maintained the character of the 18th Century building whilst providing modern facilities. The festive menu is available from the beginning of December and surprisingly they still have some availability throughout the month - If you’re stuck for Christmas present ideas, vouchers for this fabulous restaurant will be a welcome addition to anyone’s Christmas stocking.

The Joseph Whitaker School Remembrance Service On the morning of 9th November 2018 the whole school of 1280 students and 120 staff marked the centenary of the end of World War One with a Remembrance Service. This was led by Reverend Hazel Robinson, Vicar of Rainworth and Blidworth, with local members of the Royal British Legion (RBL). This followed a week of remembrance activities led by Miss Kim Edwards and Mrs M Roberts, who laid a wreath on behalf of the school staff. Additionally, wreaths were laid by the RBL, the school’s Chairman of Governors Mr Rupert Corder, plus Molly Hall and Jack Toplis on behalf of the school’s students. Our students who are members of the Blidworth Army Cadet Force, Mansfield Air Training Corp and the Mansfield Sea Cadets led the parade. An oak tree was then planted at the front of the school to mark this important event in history with a commemorative plaque made by Mr Phil Worsley. David Bell, Headteacher said: ‘As a school we feel it is incredibly import-

ant to mark such a significant milestone in history. We are very grateful to Hazel and John Robinson for organising and leading this memorable event. Our students were, as ever, a credit to the school, fully engaging in the service and all of the activities this week. On behalf of the students, staff and parents…We Will Remember Them’

A major event in our yearly scouting calendar is joining together with other groups from Farnsfield to remember those that served in our armed forces. This year was no different as young people and leaders from all the scouting sections (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts) that make up 1st Farnsfield Scout Group joined in the parade through Farnsfield, culminating in a remembrance service at St Michaels Church and wreath laying at the memorial outside.

parading through the village to the service. After the service the Scouts laid wreaths at the memorial outside of the church and presented a special 100 years of armistice wreath to remember 100 years since armistice day. The parade then marched back through the village and were dismissed at Ridgeway.

Jerry Hague Labour PPC for Sherwood On Remembrance Sunday communities throughout Sherwood turned out in their hundreds at memorable events in towns and villages, producing beautiful poppy displays and giving their respects for those who have served our country. It was an honour for me to take part in the Calverton Remembrance Parade where the number of people on the march, lining the streets and attending the service showed the whole village had joined in. It was particularly pleasing to see the wide range of ages of the participants from groups including the British Legion, Scouts and Guides and local schoolchildren. The whole event comprising the parade, the service in St Wilfrid’s Church, the laying of wreaths

at the Cenotaph and the hospitality at the Calverton WMC was a fitting tribute to all our servicemen and women. I am grateful for the efforts of all those who organised the event and it was a pleasure to chat on the day with local councillors and residents. As we reflect on the horrors of war and the courage of those who have served, it is important that we show respect for our servicemen and woman when they are no longer in service. I therefore welcome the Social Contract for veterans that the Labour Party has put forward which will ensure that veterans have the security they deserve. This Social Contract will guarantee armed forces personnel the opportunity

to have a home, free education and training and mental health support. I believe these proposals can gain cross party support and we must all work to end the scourge of rough sleeping from which some veterans unfortunately suffer and ensure help is available for all those who are affected by PTSD. Finally, as we are now approaching the end of the year I wish everyone in Sherwood an enjoyable festive season and look forward to meeting more of you in 2019! How grant helped to shape play park Groups and organisations have until the end of February to apply for a grant of up to £50,000 to help with community projects. Nottinghamshire County Council’s 2018-19 capital fund, from its Local Improvement Scheme, is open for applications from the county that can demonstrate how a grant would benefit residents. To apply, visit www.nottinghamshire.gov. uk/capital before 28th February. One scheme that has already benefited from the fund was a play park in Blidworth. Schoolchildren helped to shape the renovation of a the park by choosing the equipment they wanted thanks to a grant of £35,000, obtained by Blidworth Parish Council from the scheme.

parents and school staff teamed up with the parish council to redesign the play area, The new equipment, which is suitable for children aged up to 12, includes items suitable for use by youngsters with disabilities. The total project cost £66,500. Nottinghamshire County Council’s vice-chairman for communities and place, Coun John Handley, said: “The Local Improvement Scheme provides targeted financial support for community organisations to deliver the council’s priorities to make Nottinghamshire a great place to live, work, visit and relax. “This play park scheme is precisely the sort of application we want to support as it helps to empower local communities.”

the parish council’s application, added: Councillor Woodhead said the grant enabled the parish council to go ahead with creating a new play area, not just a renovation. Clare Brettell, clerk to the parish council, said: “Blidworth Parish Council had for some time wanted to invest in new play equipment and had set aside money each year. “We also investigated if grant funding was available to assist with this project and came across the Local Improvement Scheme’s Capital Fund, managed by Nottinghamshire County Council. “The application process was easy to follow, and we were delighted to learn that we had been successful with our application. It as made a world of difference to our young people.”

Newark & Sherwood District Council is working in partnership with Cadent Gas Ltd and Affordable Warmth Solutions to explore the possibility of bringing a new gas service and gas fired central heating to Bevan Close and Vera Crescent (Rainworth) at little or no cost to residents.

This project is in early stage development and so is still only a proposal but if enough residents register their interest then the scheme will go ahead.

Newark & Sherwood District Council currently has grant funding available to help local residents on low incomes to repair or replace inadequate heating systems. If you or someone you know is on a low income and suffering with a long term health condition made worse by living in a cold home, the Council may be able to help thanks to the Warm Homes on Prescription scheme. Last year Newark & Sherwood District Council supported more than 30 home owners (and two tenants renting from private landlords) to make their home warmer,

potentially avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions due to cold-related illnesses. A local resident who benefitted from the scheme last year said: “I suffer with mobility problems so spend a lot of time at home and feel the cold. My old back boiler broke down just before Christmas. I couldn’t afford to repair or replace it and I was getting a bit depressed with the situation so phoned the Council – they were brilliant. I’ve now got a new gas boiler and my home is toasty and warm again!” If you would like to know more about the Warm Homes on Prescription scheme, con-

“It was also really positive to meet with the School Council and the Pupil Parliament and to see just how proactively the school is engaging with democracy and participation. I was asked some really engaging questions by the students, such as what an MP does and how local democracy works. They were really switched on, and there’s definitely some future MP’s among them!” Discussing the MP’s visit, Headteacher Ms Warrington said: “I am delighted that Mark has come to Lake View to plant the sapling and we also wish to thank our MP for supporting the school especially in our

drive to improve our building and grounds. Additionally the children really enjoyed hearing all about Mark’s job, especially meeting the Queen!” The MP visited a number of other schools across the constituency to plant trees in the name of the Queens Commonwealth Canopy. The scheme, which was organised with the Woodland Trust, has seen various new trees planted and areas marked for conservation across the entire Commonwealth of Nations, including across the United Kingdom.

The MP was met by the Headteacher, the Head Boy & Girl and the School Council, before planting a sapling in the school grounds. Discussing his visit, Mr Spencer said: “It was really great to be able to visit Lake View Primary School in Rainworth, and to plant a tree with the School Council. Sport Wrens’ Christmas wish 32

Rainworth MW’s first three games under new manager Lewis Saxby has produced a mixed bag of results. A win and a draw in his first two games doubled the Wrens’ points tally from their first 14 East Midlands Counties League games to eight and lifted them out of the relegation zone into which they had slipped, before the new regime’s first loss in their most recent game as I write. The new look side got off to a winning start, achieving their first home points of the season with a 2-1 win over fellow strugglers West Bridgford. The visitors were also playing under a recently-appointed new manager, and although both sides were towards the bottom of the table the indications were that both would begin climbing the table before too long. Josh Asuman got Rainworth’s noses in front and although Bridgford pulled level it was a thunderbolt of a shot by acting skipper Jonathan Drake from well outside the area that screamed into the net for the late winner. Happy with the result, Saxby was less impressed by the side’s performance, insisting that his team could and would do much better, although for the long suffering fans it was one to savour after the previous run of results. Next up at the Tomlin Personnel Stadium were Teversal, who had knocked the Wrens out of the FA Vase 3-0 earlier in the season, but this was a completely different Rainworth side from then, and hopes were high of a second successive win.

Beeley Hawley Chartered Accountants

It was the Tevie Boys who drew first blood though, but goals either side of half time from Jonathan Drake – another one from distance, this time a direct free kick –Blessing Adaleye which put Rainworth into the driving seat and seemingly onto a second successive win. But a needless late penalty conceded gave Teversal a share of the spoils, leaving Saxby to reflect that it felt like a defeat. “We threw away two points in a game we should have won,” he said, adding with some justification that Teversal’s first goal should have been ruled out for offside. The assistant referee had raised his flag for offside and then put it down again. More frustration followed when high-riding Clifton All Whites arrived on the back of five wins in their last six, two of them by double figures. The visitors went home celebrating a 2-0 win in a match which turned on four key points. Clifton led when a shot which keeper Josh Hollis seemed to have covered struck unlucky defender Shomari Doyle and looped over the keeper into the net, giving Clifton a 1-0 interval lead. In the second half Rainworth had a blatant penalty denied when play was pulled back for an earlier offence after Aidy Harris was brought down in the box. They did get a penalty shortly afterwards but the normally deadly Harris’ spot kick was poor and easily saved. And to rub salt into the wounds Clifton snatched a late second goal to make sure of the points following a rare goalkeeping error. Coming up for the rest of November Rainworth have three away trips. They travel

to Gedling MW on Saturday 17th and will be favourites to progress in the League Cup at Borrowash Victoria on Wednesday 21st, before ending the month with a tricky trip to Radford on Saturday 24th. December brings a home game with bottom club Arnold Town on 1st, then it’s 8th Ingles (a), 15th Graham Street Prims (a), 22nd Ashby Ivanhoe (h), and 29th Borrowash Victoria (h). Saxby will be looking for a Christmas bonus of at least 10 points from the December games.
