Woodhouse Scouts are celebrating grant help
(Continued from page 1) for £1,500 to the 4th Mansfield Woodhouse Scout Group to help improve the facilities for young people in the area. “It is vital that young people have a comfortable environment to allow them to enjoy everything that Scouting offers.” One of the group’s Young Leaders, Josh, helped put the bid together. He worked with Cubs and Beavers on their Environmental Conservation Badge last year as part of a £7,000 grant from a National Lottery Awards For All Grant to install new LED lights and heaters to the Welbeck Road Scout Hut. Josh said: “We learnt about energy efficiency last year and had
a go with thermal imaging cameras to show just how much energy was being lost through the old windows. “It’s great that we can now get some new windows to keep the heat in.” The new windows, heating and lighting mean the group can deliver a wider range of Scouting activities to members through the winter. Scouting is always looking for new volunteers, go to http://4thmansfield woodhousescouts.org.uk lPICTURED above are Scouts from Meden Troop receiving the cheque from County Youth Commissioner for Nottinghamshire Scouts, Jordan Phillips (centre).
Dentists to host charity ball for heart fund THE Titchfield Dental Clinic, based at The Fourways, Mansfield Woodhouse, is staging a charity ball in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Hosted by Mansfield 103.2 Radio’s Tony Delahunty, the event will be held at the John Fretwell Sporting Complex, Sookholme, on 16th March, from 7pm.
Tickets, priced £35, are available by calling Andrea on 07946 20035 or 01623 650650. A spokesman said: “We all got our heads together and decided we would like to give a little something back. “We all know someone who has been affected by heart disease or has a heart
problem. It isn’t until you ask that you realise just how many people are affected. “In our practice alone, 70% of us have a link with someone who has had heart disease. “It was then a natural choice for us to support the British Heart Foundation with the proceeds from our charity ball.”

Sleep-out planned so others don’t have to
A CHARITY that helps the homeless is urging people in Mansfield and Ashfield to experience a single night of rough sleeping so others don’t have to.
Framework, which supports thousands of people across the East Midlands, will hold its annual Mansfield Big Snore sponsored sleep-out on Friday, 23rd March at West Nottinghamshire College’s Derby Road campus in Mansfield. The event, backed for the first time by Nottingham Building Society, will this year have a colourful circus-theme — carrying on a tradition of a fun, family event held in aid of a very serious cause Framework fundraising manager Chris Senior said: “Street homelessness is a significant problem in Mansfield, where members of our street outreach team regularly work with people who are experiencing serious physical and mental ill-health. “Taking part in the Mansfield Big Snore is a great way to demonstrate your concern, learn more about this issue and raise funds to support people in need. “With this year’s circus theme there’s a chance to enjoy great entertainment and even learn new skills. “Taking part in the Big Snore is truly an experience to remember and we forward to welcoming people to this year’s event. “I am also grateful to our sponsor, Nottingham Building Society, whose support ensures even more money gets to where it needs to be.” Event participants are encouraged to spend a night in a cardboard box in return for sponsorship money from friends, family and colleagues. The event will be held in a safe, secure area of the college grounds between 7pm and 6am. Money raised will support the work of Framework’s street outreach team, which supports people sleeping on the street into accommodation and treatment. Tony Gibney, manager at The Nottingham’s Stockwell Gate branch in Mansfield, added: “Much of our work as a society is about supporting people to enjoy the comfort and security of their own
home, so homelessness and rough sleeping are causes very close to our heart as an organisation. “We are very proud to be sponsoring the Big Snore this year for the first time and look forward to helping Framework make it a great success.” Principal and chief executive of West Nottinghamshire College, Dame Asha Khemka, said: “We are very proud to host another Big Snore event at the college. The one we hosted in 2017 was a great success and many students got involved. “Homelessness is something that students regularly discuss and raise awareness of amongst their peers. They have organised a number of money raising initiatives for
homeless charities and I am confident they will do their best for this year’s Big Snore sleep out at the college.” The event, which raised more than £20,000 last year, was begun by members of St Mark’s Church, Mansfield, in 2004, to raise money to buy a new washing machine for the Sherwood Street Hostel. Since then the event has grown and this year hopes to raise £25,000. Framework asks participants to raise a minimum of £50. Securing a place at the sleep out requires a non-refundable £10 fee for adults and £5 for people aged five to 16. To sign up go to www.frameworkha. org/mansfieldbigsnore

Woodhouse allotments made available for rent MANSFIELD District Council has cleared five large allotment plots in Mansfield Woodhouse and is offering 10 half-sized plots for rent.
The plots, which are about 125 square metres, are at the Whinney Hill site and cost £20.50 a year to rent – half the cost of a full sized plot (£41). Full and half-plots are also available at Priory Road Allotments, Mansfield Woodhouse. The council cleared them of rubbish, large weeds, sheds and greenhouses last year. Each plot will come with a compost bin provided by the council and will be rotivated for new plot holders. Coun Andrew Tristram, portfolio holder for the environment and wellbeing, said: “Gardening is well known to be a good form of exercise and is also a very therapeutic pastime – beneficial for the mind as well as the body. “These half-plots are a good way for new plot holders and gardeners to give allotments a try before committing to a full plot. It’s also a good option for people who want allotments but find the full plots are too much to cope with.” Philip Cooper, chairman of Mansfield Woodhouse Garden Holders Association, which administers and manages the allotments in Mansfield Woodhouse on behalf of the council, said: “Having an allotment is a fantastic hobby. “There’s nothing better for the soul than getting out into the fresh air and getting your hands dirty. And the bonus is you can grow your own fresh food, too. “Allotments are a great leveller. They bring together people from all age groups and backgrounds and can foster a sense

Woodhouse youngsters get moving at festival
A SPORTS festival designed to get youngsters, including from Mansfield Woodhouse, more active and co-ordinated had resounding success at West Nottinghamshire College.
More than 100 five to seven-year-olds from 11 Mansfield area primary schools, including Peafield Lane Academy, Mansfield Woodhouse, joined sports students at the Mansfield-based college for a day of activities and games. Each of the games were specially designed by the learners on the Level 3 sports programme.
Held in the college’s sports hall at the Derby Road campus, pupils got to grips with a range of games which have been designed to improve agility, co-ordination, balance and accuracy. The games, which involved girls and boys in mixed teams, included a ladder run task, target shooting with bean bags, a cricket wicket challenge and relay, javelin and frisbee games. Sport and coaching tutor Rachael Evans said: “It has been a really exciting and successful day for the children. They are much younger than the children we’ve
typically created sports programmes for, so we’ve ensured that the activities are suited to them but still challenging and fun. “They’ve been very engaged with these multi-skilled games and have really enjoyed what our Level 3 students put together in this circuit format.” Each pupil was awarded with a medal and certificate for participating in the games, by Nicki Biggs, Mansfield school games organiser. Nicki works with local schools to deliver more activities around Change4Life in line with the school curriculum.
Lifesaving charity extends its work THE Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance is to be on call 24 hours a day after trustees approved a decision to extend the helicopter’s operational hours. Last year the charity, which has a major charity shop in Mansfield Woodhouse, took delivery of a state-of-the-art AgustaWestland 169 helicopter and carried blood on board for the first time. Chief executive Karen Jobling said: “Emergencies don’t stop at 7pm and nor will we. “Thanks to our fantastic supporters, we are now in a position to fund the extension of our service and provide advanced clinical care to the people of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“This extended service will not happen overnight, but the wheels are already in motion towards the provision of a 24/7 helicopter emergency service for the communities we serve by the end of the year.” The charity has a rapid response vehicle that can quickly transport a critical care paramedic and pre-hospital care doctor to a patient. The vehicle carries the same life-saving equipment as the helicopter and is available when the helicopter is grounded due to bad weather or unplanned maintenance. Donations to help fund the air ambulance can be made at www. ambucopter.org.uk/donate

Free community parade and festival this summer
THE first Mayor’s Community Parade in Mansfield has moved a step closer.
The free event, being organised by Mansfield Sister Cities Association and Mansfield Rotary Club, will be held next to the Civic Centre on Sunday, 10th June. Following the parade, which it is hoped will feature many local groups and organisations, there will be a festival with entertainment from bands, fairground rides for young children and charity stalls. The event was inspired by a Sister Cities Association visit to Mansfield Pennsylvania in September 2016 — the fourth official exchange visit following an inaugural meeting of Mansfields from around the world that took place in Mansfield, UK, in 2000. The mayor of Mansfield,, Kate Allsop, who was on the trip to Pennsylvania, was invited to lead a community parade there and said a similar event in the UK would be a great event. She said: “I want to see a parade like the old Mansfield Carnival that ceased in the early 80s with representatives from Girl Guides, Rainbows, Brownies, Scouts, Beavers, Cubs, cadets, heritage groups, Neighbourhood Watch, youth groups, WI, local sports clubs, perhaps Mansfield Town FC, colliery bands/marching bands, classic car, vintage vehicle and bike groups as well as the emergency services like the police, fire service, ambulance and air ambulance, plus the Royal British Legion, Armed Forces and local churches.” Stewart Rickersey, chairman of the Sister Cities Association, said: “The parade will be open to community and charitable groups across Mansfield and district and there will be no charge to those groups taking part. “The logistics of the parade, however, mean that numbers will be limited, so early booking will be necessary.” Direct invitations will be made to all the community groups that expressed an interest when the project was first announced last June. Nicky Tomlinson-Murphy, president of Mansfield Rotary Club, was not in Mansfield Pennsylvania last September but said she was inspired by the enthusiasm of her members who made the trip. “The Rotary motto is Service Above
Self and all our members play a role in supporting our local community in a variety of ways, whether through fundraising on the Christmas Sleigh or support to local groups,” she said. “This community parade fits perfectly into our objectives of helping others and we are delighted to be a co-organiser of this event with the Sister Cities Association.” Details of the event are still being developed but a local event management company has been appointed by the organising team and the grounds adjacent to the Civic Centre and associated car park have been booked with Mansfield District Council. The parade route has been provisionally identified but will be subject to discussions with highways authority and the police.
The parade is expected to start at 11am and finish around 12.30pm ahead of the afternoon of entertainment. A feature that is being borrowed from Mansfield Pennsylvania will be the handing out of free sweets to young children lining the parade route. Community groups who want to book their place in the parade and have a stall at the festival following the parade can book at https://www.eventbrite. co.uk/e/mayors-community-paradetickets-41642926113 Further information can be obtained from the organising team by e-mailing stewart@ rickersey.net or calling him on 01623 404215. More details will be announced in the next few weeks.

News Museum celebrates top education award 15
Pinders Opticians
MANSFIELD Museum has earned another prestigious accolade — the Sandford Award, which independently assesses heritage sites, museums, archives and collections across the British Isles on the quality of their education programmes.
The award, managed by the Heritage Education Trust in partnership with Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln, focuses on curriculum-linked education opportunities offered to schools by heritage sites, as well as informal learning, such as family programmes. Museum manager and curator Liz Weston, who received the award with museum education officer Geoff Liptrot at a ceremony in Bath, said: “It shows that our education service is of a high standard and it is also fantastic recognition for Geoff.” Lead judge Jean MacIntyre said the museum was highly rated for the overall quality of experience. Geoff Liptrot was singled out for particular praise for providing “an engaging and inspirational educational programme”. “The museum education officer is charismatic and inspirational and brings the museum to life,” said the report. “He was very skilled at engaging and informing the pupils. He told captivating anecdotes about the artefacts he presented, providing social and historical contexts for the form and function of each one to ensure the pupils would remember them.” The judges assessed a school visit to the museum by a group of Year 3 pupils and noted the youngsters were made to feel welcome in an effectively structured, well thought-out, well paced tour. The pupils also undertook practical activities. The report, which commended the museum’s Made In Mansfield exhibition and the way the museum collaborated with teachers to develop its educational programme, said: “Mansfield Museum is absolutely worthy of a Sandford Award. “Throughout increasingly challenging times the education team have crafted and delivered an excellent programme that
meets the needs of a range of local schools and institutions. “The museum attracts many school groups simply because teachers know that an interesting and innovative day will be provided.” Coun Dave Saunders, portfolio holder for regeneration and growth, said: “This is a well-deserved award because the museum and its staff work so hard to ensure the
experience for all the museum’s visitors is interesting, enjoyable and worthwhile.” The town’s museum has joined an illustrious list of almost 500 sites that have received a Sandford Award since the scheme began in 1978, including the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, the official residence of the Queen in Scotland; Worcester Cathedral and London Transport Museum.
HOST families are wanted in the Mansfield and Ashfield area to host international students. The students, who study A or AS Levels, go to local schools. A spokesman said: “This is a chance to enhance the social and cultural
development of both your family and the visiting student, and create new and long lasting cross-cultural friendships and connections. “Give them the full British experience alongside them attending your local sixthform and studying A or AS levels.
“It would provide a rewarding experience for your family that they will engage in, be educated by and enjoy.” For further information go to www.xploretheworld.com or e-mail katehalouva42@gmail.com or call 07805 763719.

Changing the way care is delivered in Mansfield
A new care home in the centre of town offers choice and something different for anyone looking for care for a loved one. We all want choice in our lives, particularly about where and how we live. However, for some of us that choice is removed because of ill health or other conditions associated with old age. For many, moving into a care home is considered by some as a ‘last resort’ option. However, in Mansfield one company, My Care, are trying to change that image with their new Care Village, situated right in the heart of the town. My Care have developed a different way of living in a care setting that gives residents greater independence and privacy. They have created over 25 brand new apartments designed to give their residents a much greater of level of independence, but still backed by all the resources of a care home should they need it. The Willows Independent Living Apartments come in either one or two-bedroom formats and are available from February 2018.
The Willows Independent Living Apartments come in either one or two-bedroom formats and are available from February 2018. They offer much more than the traditional care home. More space, more amenities and all backed by the same great level of care delivered just next door in the Willow Tree House care home. Martin Fox-Smith, My Care’s Operations Director explains: ‘We want to offer something that gives people complete peace of mind, but also allows them much greater independence, than they would have in a traditional care home. We believe our independent living apartments do just that they provide more choice backed up by great care . “Residents of the new apartments will have their own communal areas separate from the care home, and their own garden. We want to create a community where people have privacy, dignity and are able to do things for themselves should they want to. When they feel the need for help we will be on hand to provide that assistance. We think it’s the best of both worlds.”

Striking a Balance
My Care were faced with a difficult task when creating their new Independent Living Apartments at The Willows in Mansfield. ‘We wanted to create something completely dif-ferent from other care homes in the local area. It took a lot of thinking about what people liked about care homes, but also we had to think about some of the things they were less keen on’ says Martin Fox-Smith, My Care’s Operations Director. Built on a large site, a traditional care home offering residential, dementia, respite and day care forms one half of the complex, but it is the other half where My Care have developed something different. Connected by a fantastic entrance lobby complete with full length chandeliers is The Willows, containing over twenty-five one and two-bedroom Independent Living Apartments in Phase One. Martin explains: ‘We knew that people wanted to have access to good care and support when they needed it. But they didn’t want to necessarily give up their feeling of independence, of having a place they could call their own.’
‘We had looked at similar schemes but none of them provided the total care package that we can deliver through the adjacent care home. We think it is this combination of total peace of mind linked to more space, privacy and greater flexibility, that will appeal to people.’ he continues. ‘But getting the balance right between space, functionality and something that was attractive and above all just a nice place to be in, was difficult’ he admits. Why not go along and have a look for yourself. The apartments are due to be ready for occupation in early 2018, and Willow Tree House is inviting people to come and see what their new offering is all about. If you would like to make an appointment to visit and discuss your needs then why not call Sally Ward on 01623 471300 or Martin Fox-Smith on 07850 334311 and ask about The Willows apartments.
Creating a community
Listening, talking and interacting with someone living with dementia is so important in preserving a relationship How do you create a community within a care home, making it feel like a home where someone can truly belong. At Willow Tree House we believe getting the right answer to this is really important. We strive to create a ‘home-like’ environment that gives our residents a feeling of independence and a sense of security. Whilst delivering the right care for each individual may be our prime concern it is not our only one. Feeling ‘cared for’ is just as much about relationships with staff and other residents as it is about how you are looked after. We invite all our residents to become part of our community where those residents who are able, and choose to, can contribute and be part of the daily life of the home. Our staff will always encourage and assist residents who would like to develop relationships with other residents but who may find it difficult, perhaps because they have difficulty communicating due to sensory impairment. Similarly, we know that most families are desperate to maintain the closeness of their relationship with a loved one. Willow Tree House is all about creating a sense of community within the home, allowing residents, families, friends and staff to come together for the benefit of everyone.

National Trust cooks up food school partnership THE National Trust has used local help to help its top chefs develop innovative menus using locallysourced, seasonal and sustainable ingredients at its properties across the country.
Ten chefs from the National Trust’s Food Innovation Group travelled to The School of Artisan Food — a not-for-profit organisation and registered charity dedicated to teaching skills in all aspects of sustainable and artisan food production — on the Welbeck Estate to start a partnership between the two organisations. The school’s food experts worked with 10 National Trust chefs for several days on cheesemaking, breadmaking, venison butchery, gnocchi and risotto. “We are passionate about developing a seasonal and sustainable food culture, so working with the National Trust’s chefs means we can spread the gospel far and wide,” said Julie Byrne, managing director at The School of Artisan Food. “We can help them develop their skills and that means better menus and better food for the millions of people who visit their wonderful properties every year.” Courses will run several times each year for National Trust chefs as part of
a long-term partnership agreement to develop their skills in butchery, brewing, charcuterie, chocolate-making, patisserie and more.
Returning to Trust properties around the country, the chefs will in turn train other kitchen and catering staff in the new techniques and approach. Tim Howard, food and beverage development manager at the National Trust, said: “The National Trust is committed to using responsibly-sourced ingredients with provenance. “The butchery workshop used venison from the National Trust’s Ashridge Estate in Hertfordshire, where the team there manage the estate’s population of deer to support nature conservation. “We are delighted to have partnered with Welbeck, an organisation that we feel shares our food values.” The School of Artisan Food runs dozens of short courses each year to teach practical food skills as well as the UK’s only FDQaccredited, full-time Advanced Diploma in Baking. It has recently launched a new Artisan Business Start-Up Certificate, which teaches students practical skills and the opportunity to test their ideas with experts.

NIKKI Rolls, the new chief executive of Mansfield BID, with Mansfield BID chairman John Sankey.
New BID chief sets out her aims for the group HIGHLY-EXPERIENCED town centre regeneration specialist Nikki Rolls has been appointed to head up Mansfield Business Improvement District (BID).
Nikki, who succeeds Sarah Nelson as chief executive, said the organisation had already made a positive difference to the town and she wanted to take it further forward. Nikki said: “The BID in Mansfield has been an extremely proactive organisation in the town centre, working with partners such as the local authorities and the businesses on a number of initiatives that have really made a difference. “In fact, I have never come across a BID that does as much as Mansfield does for its levypayers. “One of my first aims is to get the BID officially accredited for what it does. I am confident this can happen and that the
BID will become one of just 30 out of 205 across the UK to have this recognition. “My key role is to take the BID forward, using the foundation it has already built. I will be working on a strategic vision for the town centre, in particular the public realm areas (community spaces), attracting more national inward investment and the potential regeneration sites.” Nikki has a wealth of experience that includes stakeholder partnership development, community safety initiatives, delivering events, marketing strategies, and developing and delivering environmental and public realm improvements. In particular, she has a thorough understanding of regeneration schemes and how to bring them forward, working to resolve issues that might prevent them from being successful. She has worked on the regeneration of a
number of strategic town centres within Walsall, setting up a number of town centre partnerships, and has secured vital investment in the continued development of strategies that result in the reduction in the number of vacant units. Nikki is one of just 45 BID managers to have worked towards, and gained, a certificate in BID management. She won an Association of Town Centre Managers 2016 Award for building a sustainable town centre community. Mansfield BID chairman John Sankey said: “Nikki has a wealth of experience in working in town centre regeneration and promotion, and has a track record of getting results. She’s a logical thinker with a can-do attitude, and that’s exactly what we need in Mansfield.” Nikki won an Association of Town Centre Managers 2016 Award for building a sustainable town centre community.

Can you solve a photo mystery with museum? MANSFIELD Museum is continuing to bring NewsJournal readers a selection of its favourite photographs from the ourmansfieldarea website.
It gives the public the opportunity to share information, memories, photos and knowledge about Mansfield and the local communities, both as they are today and how they were in the past.
If you are interested in visiting the site, type www.ourmansfieldandarea.org. uk into the address line on your internet browser. This month’s feature is a mystery page. Users of the site often add photographs about which they have little or no information. Visitors can then help in identifying the people, the place, the event or the date.
This has been very successful over the years, but this picture of a group of young lads off on a trip somewhere remains unidentified, although someone has commented on how it reminds him of a trip he went on as a boy. Perhaps you will recognise yourself or someone else — if so why not visit the site and add your information?
Currently on at Mansfield Museum The Life Of A Coalminer On until 2nd June, 2018 THE Life Of A Coalminer’ is all about the world of the Nottinghamshire coalfield throughout the 20th Century. The exhibition attempts to capture not just the rigours and dangers of life at the coal-face, but also something of the flavour of the closelyknit communities whose lives revolved around ‘Th’Pit.
This Is Me, This Is Mansfield Until 24th March, 2018
THIS Is Me, This Is Mansfield celebrates the museum’s first home in a building known locally as the Tin Tabernacle (right). It is the culmination of an inter-generational arts project that invited local residents to create mini-me ceramic figures during workshops at the museum and out in the community. The resulting three-dimensional figures (or selfies) will be displayed in cabinets of curiosity alongside two-dimensional responses from local schoolchildren.

Children’s groups are fun and thriving TWO children’s groups sponsored by St Edmund’s Church are thriving at Turner Hall in Mansfield Woodhouse.
Both groups — an after-school club and a toddler group — are held on Wednesdays. Superheroes costumes were created from colourful balloons at the launch of the new after-school club. Magical Mayhem, who is always popular when he comes to Mansfield Woodhouse, was enjoyed by more than 100 children. The new club meets from 3.30pm-4.30pm every Wednesday in term-time. Primary children can pop in straight from school to enjoy a healthy snack, craft and active games. There are also board games available. The club finishes with Friends And Heroes, animated children’s stories that bring the Bible to life. The toddler group, called Little Teds, has grown so popular that it has twice moved to bigger premises. It meets from 1pm to 3.15pm in the large Turner Hall, where there is still room for more families to join. They enjoy ride-on toys, action songs, Little Ted’s stories, play musical instruments, have a healthy snack and explore large toy-boxes to see what they can find. Both groups are run by Rachel Coupe. Call her on 07752 686000 for more information.
Helping to make dreams come true A COMPANY with a branch in Mansfield Woodhouse helped make dreams come true for sick children after raising £1,500 for charity. Staff at regional electrical retailer LEW, which opened on Old Mill Industrial Estate last year, made a donation to
When You Wish Upon A Star instead of sending Christmas cards along with colleagues at the firm’s 12 branches Joanne Wright, area manager for the charity, received a cheque for £1,500 from Andy Johnson, LEW managing director.
She said: “We would like to thank LEW for their wonderful support. “By not sending Christmas cards they will truly help to make a difference to the lives of some very brave and special children and their families.”
