The Woodhouse wolves are back
ON the High Street in Mansfield Woodhouse is a cottage called Wolf Hunt House and it is reputed that long ago the man who lived there had the job of keeping the area free from wolves.

The wolves are back again, this time through a new community artwork on the Millennium Green. Created by Nottingham-based carver Mark Manders, the sculpture was made out of an old ash tree that was felled in 2014. Children from the Bramble and Manor academies in Mansfield Woodhouse attended a workshop, where they heard about the natural history of the green and made (Continued on page 5)

MANSFIELD Museum has appealed for help from the public with a new programme that will look at music and memory. During the project, which will start in March, a loan box will be produced containing multi-sensory elements related to music and its changes over the last century. The museum is looking for any items with a music theme, from posters, ticket stubs and memorabilia, to photos, vinyl records, clothing and radios, particularly anything with a connection to the local area. Donated items given will be used for
handling sessions, discussion points for reminiscence and education through a learning programme. A spokesman for the museum said: “All donations are welcome but we reserve the right to refuse any items not appropriate to this project or that are duplicated. The museum, which is free to enter, is open from 10am to 5pm. Woodhouse teaching assistant wins award THE Evolve Trust, a multi-academy trust with academies in Mansfield and Mansfield Woodhouse, celebrated outstanding contributions from its staff at its first awards evening.
The event, which highlighted the work towards the education of students across the trust and its academies — The Brunts and The Beech in Mansfield and The Bramble in Mansfield Woodhouse — was hosted by trust chief executive Claire-Marie Cuthbert. Headteachers from the academies nominated two members of staff, not necessarily teachers, who had made outstanding contributions. Winners were: Laura Solly (Brunts); Ricky Potts (Beech); Sarah O’Leary (a teaching assistant at Bramble); and Jennifer Bishop (Brunts). Guests at the black-tie event at Forever Green, Rainworth, included nominated staff, headteachers, trust trustees and members of the trust’s leadership team. Chris Henley and Gary Toward, of Decisive Element, gave a motivational speech. Claire-Marie Cuthbert said: “The Evolve Trust recognises that its staff are its greatest asset and without their outstanding contribution, students would not achieve their potential and develop the skills needed to succeed and enjoy life” Media coverage of the event was handled by students from The Brunts Academy, supported by teaching staff.

Woodhouse celebration marks 20 years of help
AMAZON Breast Cancer Support Group has marked 20 years of helping women with breast cancer at King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton.
At a 20th anniversary celebration for the thriving local charity at King’s Mill’s Conference Centre at the hospital, a cheque for £300 was presented by Davinda Livingstone, representing Weight Watchers, to Beryl Perrin, the charity’s chairman. The donation was the result of a fundraising event organised by Wray Annable at her Weight Watchers meetings and an event at Redfern Travel, Mansfield Woodhouse, where there was a refreshment stall, small business stalls and a raffle. The Amazons thanked the fundraising supporters of the event and also said a “big thank-you” to Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust for hosting the Amazons’ 20-year celebration.

Healthcare cadets set for life on wards
HEALTHCARE extended diploma students at Mansfield’s Vision Studio School are set to embark on clinical training and ward placements at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
An innovative new programme, which will enable the teenagers to experience real-life on hospital wards, as well as learn a range of clinical procedures, is being launched in February as a healthcare cadet scheme. The launch of the new scheme was welcomed by the students (above) at their induction day at King’s Mill Hospital, where they got to know the trust’s values and discovered the importance of infection control as well as data protection and management. From February, the extended diploma healthcare students, will be joining newly-recruited hospital healthcare support assistants in the trust’s education centre to learn techniques, such as how to take blood pressure, using a catheter and how to insert a cannula. Advanced resuscitation dolls will be used for practical training and the hands-on learning will be backed up with theory lessons.
Approximately 20 students from the studio school will begin the training, which will be coupled with ward-based experience. Kelly Hopley, subject area leader for health and social sciences, said: “These students have recently been studying health and safety at work and equality and diversity as well as care values and life stages. “This practical experience in the hospital will give them a chance to put their learning into practice and understand how it’s applied. “It’s a fantastic opportunity, which is only normally offered to university students. It will mean they can learn alongside nurses and consultants, and get meaningful and real experience. It will pave the way for them to begin working in the healthcare sector on apprenticeships or higher-level studies.” Jessica Arnold, 17, said: “Eventually I want to work in mental health and this experience is vital. “I already work in a care home so I’m getting some good grounding in the industry already.” Sixteen-year-old Sam Downs said: “The hospital induction helped to inform us about the various teams in the hospital, all the different aspects of care and what it’s like to work here.”

Marking 25 years of making a big splash
THE Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Complex in Mansfield is celebrating 25 years since it was first opened by the Princess Royal. Visitors can swim, ride flumes and work-out at the centre, which offers three water rides, a wave machine, fun pool and water features for young children within a sub-tropical atmosphere. The 25m competition pool is home to the Nova Centurion Swimming Club, which has coached Olympic and Paralympic med-
allists Rebecca Adlington, Sam Hynd, Ollie Hynd and Charlotte Henshaw. Water Meadows, along with other leisure centres in the district, is managed by Mansfield District Leisure Trust and its operator Serco. Mansfield District Council works in partnership with the trust to continue to improve facilities. In 2012, the fitness complex was refurbished and new water features were added to the pool for young children. In 2014, thanks to funding from Sport
England, the existing changing area was revamped and improvements made to showers and toilet facilities. Earlier this year, a new soft play and café area were added. Coun Andrew Tristram, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “We are very proud of Water Meadows, which offers such a wide range of facilities for everyone across the district and beyond to enjoy. “We have made various improvements over the years and we hope people continue to enjoy using it for many years to come.”

Town centre shops join seat scheme A STUDENT whose winning design is highlighting Mansfield town centre’s Take A Seat campaign hopes the poster will appeal to all shoppers.
Mansfield BID (Business Improvement District) is working with Vision West Nottinghamshire College and Swinton Insurance on the Healthy High Streets scheme that sees shops and businesses offering a seat to people who need it, without any obligation to buy anything. Students from the college’s Cambridge Technical Diploma in IT Level 2 (Software and Systems Support) took part in a competition to design the poster that will be used by businesses to show they are participating in the campaign. Kulraj Singh Johal. (16), of Pinxton, won the competition, scooping a goodie bag from Boots worth more than £100. Kulraj (pictured centre) said: “My design showed a classic armchair, with a swirled pattern and a black outer circle. I wanted to make the chair stand out using vibrant colours to attract the target audiences. “I hope it appeals to young and old as both groups would probably welcome a sit down when they are out shopping in Mansfield.” Runner-up was Fabio Incerti. (17), of Farnsfield, and third was Ryan Gill. (19), of Sutton. Businesses taking part so far include Boots, Swinton Insurance, Bon Marche, Collections, The Nottingham, Xibit Jewellery, Santander, The Shiny Spoon, Charmingly Yours, Mansfield Museum, Wilkos, Manor Pharmacy, Birds, 10 Green Bottles, Marks and Spencer and Harmony Health. Sarah Nelson, BID manager, (also pictured) said: “This is a superb idea and will help people. “It is great to see that Kulraj thought about what the campaign was all about when thinking of the design.”
Businesses will display the winning poster in their shop windows, highlighting the fact that they are participating in the initiative.

PUPILS at The Bramble Academy with decorations they made at workshops at the school.
Creative youngsters at Bramble Academy
THE Bramble Academy in Mansfield Woodhouse invited parents and families to join pupils at its annual Christmas decoration workshops.
Children took home decorations they had made to put on their Christmas trees. The event was organised by the chairman of governors, Anne Callaghan, and Jayne Littlewood, director of engagement at The Evolve Trust, which runs the academy together with The Brunts and The Beech academies in Mansfield. Anne said: “We ran two workshops and had a very good turnout at both. “The Bramble Academy is committed to working closely with parents and families to engage them in their children’s learning. We believe in our children and so we have very high expectations of what they can accomplish in terms of behaviour, academic work and play. “A Christmas theme was a great way to get everyone working together. It was lovely to see the excitement on children’s faces.”

THE Emergency Assessment Unit team (left) at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were among the winners as staff excellence and outstanding achievements were celebrated at a special awards ceremony.
Health stars honoured at annual celebration SHERWOOD Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has celebrated staff excellence and the outstanding achievements of its staff at a special awards ceremony.
More than 340 exceptional individual and team entries from across the trust were congratulated on their achievements in 10 separate categories. One team that stood out was the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU), which won the team award in the Efficient And Safe category as well as the chairman’s team award for excellence. They were recognised for their work to develop the service by integrating inpatient therapists and those working in the community, making working together more effective. This more joined-up service has had a positive impact on patient care and progression through the hospital and healthcare system. That is reflected in the fact that Sherwood Forest Hospitals is among the
top 30 of England’s 136 trusts offering an emergency department service for the fourhour target. Figures show that for the three months to the end of September, the trust achieved the national target of seeing and treating 95% of urgent admissions within four hours. Jayne Revill, EAU matron, said: “I’m so proud that we won not one, but two awards. It really is down to the hard work of the team that we have been able to implement a system that works so well. “Many people put forward ideas on how we could improve things and I’m proud to say that many of the suggestions have been put into practice. We have vastly improved the service for our patients to ensure that they get the best possible care they need.” Staff members nominated colleagues for eight of the awards, and members of the public voted for a special team or individual providing care above and beyond the call of duty in The People’s Award.
In addition, the Chairman’s Award recognised an exceptional and inspirational contribution to the trust by an individual and team. Winners represented all levels of staff from consultants to housekeepers, acknowledging a wide range of achievements from the introduction of new policies and service improvements through to the support provided by the trust’s army of volunteers. Trust chairman Peter Marks said: “I was delighted to attend the awards. It made me very proud to know that we have so many excellent staff working here at Sherwood Forest Hospitals. “The event alone made it quite clear how we have succeeded in making such significant improvements across the trust over the past year, and many of the areas commended by inspectors in our latest CQC report were reflected in the shortlisted entries. “The quality of the applications was very high, and those shortlisted did extremely well.”

Digging into a seam of mining heritage A SHOW that has its roots in coal mining is part of the new season at the Palace Theatre, Mansfield.
The Pitmen Poets (right) have been dubbed from Billy Elliot and Close The Coalhouse Door to When The Boat Comes In and The Pitmen Painters. The group features four of NorthEast England’s musical champions — ex-Lindisfarne singer Billy Mitchell, renowned singer and instrumentalist Bob Fox, leading exponent of Tyneside song Benny Graham, and much-covered Durham songwriter Jez Lowe. The four will celebrate the triumphs, tragedy, humour and hard times of NorthEast England’s coal mining tradition in an evening of music, song and spoken word, illustrated by atmospheric photography. The Pitmen Poets is on Sunday, 12th February, at 7.30pm. Music of many genres features at the Palace in February and March. It is all aboard the ghost train on Saturday, 4th February for two performances of Vampires Rock – Ghost Train, while memories of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and then Elvis Presley will be stirred by two shows — Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular on Friday, 10th February, and One Night Of Elvis, on Saturday, 11th February. Elvis tribute artist Lee Memphis King will recreate the iconic Vegas years in his new production for 2017. Stand By Me, on Saturday, 25th February, is a celebration of Ben E. King and The Drifters, In March, Les McKeown’s Bay City Rollers will roll back the years to hits
such as Bye Bye Baby, Shang-a-Lang and Remember, and play new songs from an upcoming Rollers album.
MANSFIELD Palace Senior Youth Theatre is presenting its take on a spooky classic with When Frankenstein Came To Matlock on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th February, at 7pm. In Mary Shelley’s novel, Dr Frankenstein stops in Matlock to create a bride for his monster, who is travelling with him. This version, written by Kevin Fegan, sees the monster meet a young girl and settle down there. Fast forward to 2018, when there have
been many advances in genetic engineering, and Percy, a descendant of Frankenstein, runs a motorcyle shop in Matlock. But what happens when Percy teams up with dodgy genetic surgeon, Godwin? Will he be able to get body parts as easily as bike parts? The production is suitable for those aged 12 and above. l FOR tickets, call 633133 or go to www. mansfieldpalace.co.uk

Made in Mansfield — The importance of mines THE Made In Mansfield industrial gallery in the arcade at Mansfield Museum arcade looks at eight of the more well-known industries that built Mansfield’s reputation for manufacturing — and reveals stories about the work and the social aspects of working for major companies in the past. The museum is bringing NewsJournal readers the story of the people and companies that made Mansfield a centre of industry — and reveals stories about the work and the social aspects of working for major companies in the past.
A mining town THE growth of British industry led to a huge demand for coal. The first mines in this area were at Skegby, where coal lay closer to the surface. Mansfield’s best coal lay about a quarterof-a-mile underground and could not be reached without steam power. The Warsop Main, Sherwood and Mansfield collieries were all founded around 1900. More mines nearby made Mansfield the centre of a major coalfield and its population more than doubled to reach 36,888 in 1911.
Mansfield Mines Rescue Service COAL mining was a very dangerous business — explosive and poisonous gases, heavy machinery, long tunnels and deep lift shafts all took their toll and 286 miners lost their lives working in the Mansfield, Sherwood and Warsop Main collieries. Many more would have done so had they not been quickly rescued from their underground workplace. Mansfield was home to one of the first and last central Mines Rescue Stations. It was opened in 1909 and went through nationalisation and privatisation to become the base of the national Mines Rescue Service Ltd.

Award for work on underage drinking A PAVEMENT spray-stencil initiative to combat underage drinking in Mansfield and Ashfield has helped to win a national award
Sue Grief, communications officer for the Mansfield and Ashfield area of the Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP), came up with the idea for the stencil — and designed it. The temporary stencil, which is put on pavements outside shops, warns adults not to buy alcohol for children. The idea has been hailed a success — leading to a reduction in under-18s buying and drinking alcohol, and has now been adopted by other CAP groups, including those in Yorkshire, Edinburgh and Wales. A new report showed that in Mansfield, alcohol-related anti-social behaviour among youngsters fell by 53% — 13% higher than the national average. There was also a 14% reduction in the number of cases of adults buying alcohol for under18s. Sue said: “The award came as a complete surprise but, of course, a very nice one. I am delighted that it is helping to raise the profile of successful partnership work being done in Ashfield and Mansfield. The CAPs work as a result of everyone working together and it is great to be part of the teams.” Sue received her award from CAP director Nick Grant, head of legal services at Sainsbury’s, who said: “Sue has come up with a wide range of creative and effective ways to inform and educate the public. “These include newsletters for schools, leaflets for distribution in shops and articles for the press. “Her superb idea for temporary spray stencils on pavements outside shops, warning adults not to buy alcohol for children, has been a huge hit and adopted by CAP groups all around the UK.” Derek Lewis, chairman of CAP,
said: “Sue has made a tremendous contribution to the success of CAPs in Nottinghamshire. “Local partnerships of communities and retailers are working together to provide tailor-made solutions to under-age drinking. “They are a powerful and effective way to protect children and create better and safer neighbourhoods.” CAP brings together retailers, councils, police, schools, neighbourhood groups and others to tackle the problem of under-age drinking.

Woodhouse winner at sports awards LAUREN King, from the Manor Academy, Mansfield Woodhouse, was among the winners at the 2016 Mansfield Sports Recognition Awards.
A member of the Mansfield Leadership Academy since 2014, she provides support to many Mansfield district schools competitions and events. She received the Junior Sports Leader of the Year award, sponsored by Belvoir Lettings. Her citation said: “Since graduating from the Leadership Academy in 2014, Lauren has become a mentor to her peers and younger members of the Leadership Academy. “She is always willing to help and volunteer at both her school and district sporting events. “Lauren has recently been nominated to represent Mansfield on a County Coaching leadership academy, which is an opportunity to develop her skills further and meet like-minded leaders from across the county. “She also volunteers at 2nd Mansfield Scout Group as an Explorer. “This involves fundraising events, working in a church kitchen, day trips and residential trips. “Lauren leads a Beaver group every Friday evening, providing fun games and activities for the young members.” The annual ceremony, organised by Mansfield District Council in association with The Armchair Club and the Chad, recognised the district’s sporting greats, including the best teams, coaches, volunteers, sportsmen and sportswomen. It was held at The Civic Quarter inside the Civic Centre, Mansfield, and

attracted 41 nominations across 10 categories. Athlete Ella Hughes capped a marvellous year by being named sportsperson of the year. Ella made the transition from school
to university in the year, earning a full blue for Cambridge University and an England call-up. The cross-country athlete won the Nottinghamshire County Under-20 Championship by a huge margin and then went on to win the Midlands title. Swimmer Ollie Hynd claimed the disabled sportsperson of the year award after a terrific year that saw him break world records and become the leading male medal winner for the British swimming team at the Paralympics in Brazil, where he won two gold medals. There were also two additional awards — the Mayor’s Special Achievement Award, which recognises the work of an individual in promoting sport within the district, and the Ian Bagshaw Memorial Award, in memory of Water Meadows manager Ian Bagshaw, who lost his life to leukaemia in 2014, aged 57. Swimmers claimed the junior awards. Junior sportsperson of the year was Warsop’s Elliot Clogg, who qualified for the 2016 European Juniors Championships in Hungary, and junior disabled sportsperson of the year was Ben Foulston, ranked number three in Britain at his Paralympic 400m freestyle event and 21st in the International Paralympic Committee world rankings. Portfolio holder for the environment at the district council Coun Andrew Tristram said: “Mansfield is deservedly proud of its athletes, teams, coaches and volunteers, who have made 2016 yet another memorable sporting year. “The sportsmen and sportswomen are competing at a very high level, putting Mansfield on the map, both nationally and internationally. “I thank them for all their outstanding contributions to sport in the district.”
