Farnsfield Cubs water fun day Cubs from across Nottinghamshire gathered for a Cub Water Activity Fun Day on Saturday 2nd June. With nearly 30 plus members of 1st Farnsfield Cubs attending and 300 from across Nottinghamshire, it was one of the biggest water events the Cubs have attended in recent times. Held at the newly developed Nottinghamshire Scouts Adventure Centre at Hoveringham, the day was adventure packed with loads of on, and off, water activities for the 8 to 10 ½ year olds to do. Cubs had the chance to take part in exciting water-based activities, ranging from kayaking to sailing, to canoeing and even a chance to take an adventure on a handmade raft! They also went on a nature trail around the local lake. Despite some inclement weather at the start of the day, it stayed dry and the Cubs enjoyed a great taste of adventure on the water.
Thank you to the adults that made it possible. If you have a skill and think you can help Farnsfield Cubs continue to offer young people every day adventure then get in touch. We can't do this without great adult volunteers. Visit 1stfarnsfield.org. uk/volunteer to see what role might suit you or just get in contact with Chris on 07779324341 for a chat.
Blidworth and District Historical & Heritage Society On June 5th our regular monthly meeting was once again well attended by members and guests. A full programme of events began with the main speaker for the evening, Howard Heeley. This is the second time that Howard has visited us and on this occasion his subject was “Stained Glass Aviation Commemoration” Initially, Howard explained how glass is made by mixing together some form of silica, an alkali, and lime or lead oxide. The colour is produced by adding a metallic oxide. Stained glass was usually produced to make windows. The light would shine through eloquently demonstrating a means of expression that very few means of art are able. It is a form
of painting that began over 1,000 years ago and is still essentially made the same way today. Our speaker then showed us numerous slides and examples of this art form that is used to commemorate Aviation today and the stories attached to each. A Zeppelin missed its target during WW1 whilst searching for the City of Lincoln. The parish church of St John in Washingborough, Lincolnshire has a Norman tower and a stained glass window inside the church depicts the zeppelin raid on the village in 1916. (Continued on page 11)

Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest The Rotary year starts and finishes in July each year and Sherwood Forest Rotary has been helping this community for 46 years! Before we welcome in a new President we look back over the past year and look forward to the coming year. We recalled the events, functions and fun we had during President Stella’s year and of the groups and charities we had helped, both locally and abroad. This year we welcomed two new members to our Club Tony Allsopp and Dave Dennis. Dave, who is a bit of an IT expert, created a visual presentation that looked at the past year through the eyes of a new Rotarian. Dave’s year began by our giving £3,918 to Cancer Research UK. This money was raised through sponsorship of riders, including Dave, who cycled 200 mile from Robin Hood’s Bay to Sherwood Forest in 24 hours. They coped with rain, sleet, punchers, the night and the odd pulled muscle by the end but it was all worth it. Maybe someone should have pointed out to the intrepid bikers that the prevailing wind blows from Edwinstowe towards Robin Hoods Bay and that it rains, in their case snowed, over the Yorkshire Moors. These Moors are large hills with long grinding climbs to boot!
Rotarian Dave Dennis and President Stella
Club members were treated to a variety of speakers and events throughout the year on a variety of subjects. We learnt about the Beatles, The history of Sweets and Chocolates, Comic Postcards and Astronomy. More serious topics included Charity speakers like Talking Books & Guide Dogs for the Blind. We spent an evening on the Trent listening to Jazz and it was such fun that we forgot it rained! Other activities we enjoyed were taking part in the Rotary District Quiz where the Sherwood Forest team managed to come a respectable 2nd out of 58 teams who entered. We celebrate the Clubs founding each year and our annual Charter is really

a Birthday Party. At Charter we present a Robin Hood Award to someone in the local community who gives a tireless commitment helping local people. This year this award was shared between Nicola Batty form Kirton and Beverly Potinger from Tuxford both worthy recipients.
We have three annual fundraising events; The Annual Proms Concert, The Golf Day and St Georges Day celebrated Duck Race. The Proms are held at the Dukeries Academy in November. The Academy Band and Choir and the Community Voices as well as soloists give the audience a rousing evening of songs and music. Many local residents will have seen us at the St Georges Day Celebrations in Ollerton where we hold a Duck Race. You may have seen Tim in the river this year swishing and encouraging ducks to swim to the finishing line rather than resting in the vegetation along the banks. We also have Sue and Denise providing Face painting for the younger villagers. Our fundraising ended on a high note with our Rotary Golf Day sponsored by Jones and Co. The weather was kind; it was a fun day and over £2,000 was raised to be donated to the University of Nottingham’s Children’s Brain Tumor Research Trust. We supported, through donations local groups like the Thursday Club, The Memory Café and many others as well as Rotary Charities overseas like Aqua Box who provide emergency clean water filtration units after natural disasters and others. We look forward to the coming year and
agree upon those groups and charities we will be fundraising for and supporting in the forthcoming year at our AGM. Our guest Assistant Governor Rotarian Paul Richardson was generous to us and he said ‘Sherwood Forest Club punches over its weight in helping its local community and supporting causes overseas.’ Have you ever wanted to visit Antarctica or to learn more about it? On the 25th July our open evening Wednesday speaker is club member Robert Baker. Robert and his wife recently had the experience of a lifetime when they went to Antarctica and Robert will talking about his experience and showing slides of his holiday. Members of the public are welcome to come along to this meeting at South Forest Leisure Centre at 7.00pm and share a two course meal, then listen to this stimulating talk. Alternatively join us at 8.00pm after the supper. Places must be pre-booked with South Forest on 01623 823866. The two course meal is £11.00 or for the talk only £3.00. Join us and help us to help others in this community & overseas humanitarian causes & disaster relief. The Chafer Beetle threat Chafer beetles are easily recognisable as being a flying insect, approximately 9mm (⅜”) in length, with brown wing cases and a brown or metallic green head, and their presence can pose a significant threat to the health of domestic lawns.
The adult chafer beetles emerge from the lawn, typically from late May to the middle of June, and after mating, lay their eggs on the turf within a couple of weeks or so. The eggs hatch into chafer grubs a few weeks later, and the grubs start to feed on grass roots until late autumn, before burrowing deep into the ground for the winter. Any initial damage may not be serious and could therefore perhaps go unnoticed, but damage will become obvious at the times when the grubs are reaching maturity, i.e., between autumn and early summer of the following year, when areas of the lawn may become yellowish. Having lain dormant during the winter, the grubs start to move back towards the surface in the spring, feeding on the grass roots as they go, before hatching out as beetles, thereby starting the process again. There is no doubt that the presence of chafer grubs presents a serious threat to a lawn. Like leatherjackets, the grubs eat the roots of the lawn and other plants, often with devastating results. The damage caused by the grubs eating the grass roots typically becomes obvious during late summer, when the areas of the turf may turn yellowish. The grass may also be found to be easily pulled up, because the roots have been so badly damaged that
they can no longer ‘anchor’ the grass plant.
This damage is often exacerbated by the action of predators digging for the grubs. Birds are the chafer grub’s natural predator, particularly members of the crow family such as magpies and rooks, and hedgehogs, badgers and foxes will also dig up the lawn in order to feed on them. This activity can often cause more damage to the lawn than the grubs themselves. Four Seasons Lawn Care have access to a professional treatment which has been proven to be extremely effective against the chafer threat. The period from July-August is the ideal time to apply. For more information, or to arrange a free, no-obligation lawn survey, please contact us on 01623 402509 or 07738 571971.

Ravenshead Libary News Everyone’s a winner Sorry you missed the cake but you can still see the lovely refurbishments carried out recently at the library in Milton Court Ravenshead. There is an upgraded fresh layout and lots of new stock to choose from. The library was officially re-opened by then Nottinghamshire County Council Chairman John Handley pictured alongside Councillors John Cottee and Chris Barnfather and an eager group of young helpers. Customers were spotted reminiscing about times past whilst learning about the exciting plans afoot for the library service to be delivered by Inspire Culture Learning & Libraries. You will be most welcome to come to our weekly Saturday coffee mornings from 9.30-11.30am or join our Knit and Natter group which meets on Fridays from 10.0011.30am. If you have little ones please come to our Rattle Rhyme & Roll sessions
from 2.30-3.00pm on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month and those with school age children 4-11 years will love our Family Art Club which happens on Fridays from 3.454.45pm during school term time. We are in the process of setting up a Games/Quiz/Scrabble/Jigsaw group for adults on Tuesday and Saturday mornings and would love to hear from anyone interested. We’ve managed to persuade local author Caroline Tudor to come in to do a talk and book signing to promote her debut novel The Chalk Man, a creepy, claustrophobic thriller about a group of children who get caught up in a dangerous game – join us (if you dare!) on Tuesday 17th July at 2.00pm. P.S. Forgot to mention the delicious fresh ground coffee now on offer! Hope to see you soon.
I am not a fan of the beautiful game but even I can’t ignore the fact that football is taking centre stage as thirty two teams are battling away to be in the final of the FIFA world cup in Russia. As you read this I don’t know which teams will still be competing in the tournament: some will already have been knocked out and others will be hanging in there by the skin of their teeth. But on 15th July the final will be played and only one team will be lifting the world cup trophy aloft and carrying their prize back home. It seems sad after all the preparation and build up that the other teams go home with only their memories. But it was ever so – to the victor go the spoils as the old saying goes. The giving of prizes for being the best is nothing new. In the ancient world laurel wreaths were given to those who could run the fastest, jump the longest or throw the furthest. Paul, a follower of Jesus, writes in a letter to a church in the Greek city of Philippi: ‘So I run straight toward the goal in order to win the prize, which is God's call through Christ Jesus to the life above.’ What he is saying is that we are to live our lives as though we are trying to win a prize. But the prize we are to pursue is not a cup or a medal; rather it is a life of eternity spent with Jesus. To win this prize we simply have to trust in God and follow Jesus’ example, and the good news is that this prize is not just for one person, but for everyone who wants it.
Birchall brothers are record breakers again Mansfield sidecar champions Ben and Tom Birchall won the 2018 Locate.im Sidecar TT Race 2 at the Isle of Man TT Races with a flawless performance that saw both lap and race records smashed for the second time in less than a week. The win gave the brothers their third TT double and their eighth win around the 37.75-mile Mountain Course. In perfect conditions, the IEG Racing supported pair rode three blinding laps, all of which were inside their previous lap record set in 2017. Following a steady start to the race, driver Ben Birchall began to push and on lap two, the brothers increased their lead over the second-placed outfit to over 15 seconds. Their lap-time of 18 minutes 59.018 seconds – the first sub 19-minute lap for a sidecar – netted the Mansfield-based duo a new record average speed of 119.250mph. Easing off just a little on the final circuit, the Birchalls still recorded an impressive lap of 118.427mph. The win marks the eighth for Mitchells of Mansfield supported Birchall Racing – their fifth in a row. Tom now equals Manxman Dan Sayle as the
most successful sidecar TT passenger, both with eight wins to their credit.
Birchall Racing won the Fred Hanks Award for the fastest aggregate time in both sidecar races and, with three LCR outfits on the podium, were also awarded the Chassis Manufacturers Team Award. Ben said: “What can I say, it’s been such a fantastic week. I’ve got two great competitors who pushed me all the way today and on the opening lap the first board I saw said we were in second place – two seconds behind. I knew then we had a race on our hands. I have to give full credit to John (Holden), it’s been a tough week for him, and I wish Fiona all the best following her accident. “Things felt really good with the bike though and the conditions out there were perfect, so I was able to push on a little harder and again the lap times just come when everything is right like that. I didn’t go out there to break the record, my aim was to stay as clean and consistent as possible, but we were rewarded with an amazing lap time and the win.
“I can’t begin to try and explain what it feels like or takes to win around here, there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes that enables us to race and for that I have to thank everyone involved.” Tom said: “It feels amazing to take another win on the TT course – you can never take anything for granted around here. The first lap felt strong, but John was just that little bit faster – I knew then we would have to press on a little more. We fired out of Quarterbridge on the second lap so well, that it was obvious something special was going to happen, Ben’s driving was amazing – smooth and yet so fast and that’s exactly what you need around the Isle of Man. “We have to thank everyone that has supported us, especially over the last two weeks. The Isle of Man TT is such a massive challenge to all who race here and we wouldn’t be able to claim the results we do without such a strong and dedicated team behind us.” Results: 2018 Locate.im Sidecar TT Race 2 1. (Continued from Page 1) Without doubt the most impressive displays of aviation stained glass are installed in the St George RAF Chapel in Halton Buckinghamshire. The School of Technical Training at RAF Halton stretches back to 1919 and contains over 100 stained glass panels commemorating each Apprentice entry. These panels commemorate the many achievements and events in aviation history. Howard Heeley has a tremendous passion for the subject and this became more apparent when he explained to us, the only true way to appreciate the art of stained glass is to view the original. During the refreshment break our members and guests were able to view a selection of the many photographs from our extensive archive and also to brows a selection of our books and magazines. Afterwards we continued with our audience participation section. This time we discussed the life and times of a Blidworth man who a few still remember, but perhaps didn’t know the full story of his experiences as a young man. Mention the name “Leonard Stafford” to anyone who lived in a colliery house in our village during the 1940’s & 50’s, and they will tell you that he was the man you went to see when you needed to report a fault or a repair to your house. Leonard’s official title was the “Estate Foreman” and as such he was responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the 800 properties that the Blidworth miners and their families occupied at that time. In 1916, Leonard Stafford enlisted in the army at the age of 17years 11months. Following 12 months training with the South Staffordshire Regiment he became a Lance Corporal. He was then posted to France where he subsequently took up position on the front line. On March 21st 1918, during what became known as the Spring Offensive, which resulted in many casualties and 21,000 British soldiers taken prisoner. Leonard Stafford became a POW on that day and remained a prisoner until Armistice Day in November. He suffered many
hardships at that time which he recorded in great detail in his notebook. He mentions, the shortage of food, the long hours of work maintaining roads and railways, how his fellow prisoners were killed by bombs dropped by British aircraft. Leonard passed away in 1959 and on the 100th anniversary of his capture, Leonard’s family presented his wartime notebook to the South Staffordshire Regiment’s Museum. Top Rotary honour for rugby stalwarts Three members of Mansfield Rugby Club have been honoured by Mansfield Rotary Club, after they were each presented with a Paul Harrris Fellow Award for their work as volunteers promoting sport within the community. Club chairman Andy Foster, together with president Byron Edwards and treasurer Mike Copestake, were invited to a Rotary meeting — and surprised to all be honoured. Former club member Kelvin Bowman introduced the awards on the night and Mansfield Rotary president Nicky Tomlinson-Murphy presented the awards. The Paul Harris Fellow is the highest award an individual can receive from Rotary for service above self — only a maximum of 150 are awarded each year by the board of Rotary International. Andy explained: “We have a long-standing and very strong relationship with Mansfield Rotary Club that spans well over 40 years. “For example, in return for borrowing the Rotary club’s Santa Sleigh for our children’s Christmas parties, club members have always collected funds for Rotary every December in the town centre during the build up to Christmas, so it’s worked well for both of us over the years. “So, when I was contacted by Rotary secretary Stewart Rickersey to ask if I could arrange for Byron and Mike to attend the
meeting as they wanted to thank them for their hard work for the club over the years by presenting them with the Paul Harris Fellow Award, it came as no surprise as they both thoroughly deserve the recognition. I was thrilled for them. “However, what did come as a surprise to me was the fact that I was to receive the award as well. “As I knew they were to be honoured, I told Byron and Mike that we were all there to
represent the club and to receive formal thanks from the Rotary club to celebrate our long-term friendship, but none of us knew I was to receive the award as well. “Receiving the award is a tremendous honour and something we know is not given away lightly, especially to non-Rotarians. “Each of us offer our grateful thanks for such humbling recognition.”

www.nottsappliancesrepairs.co.uk How to make sure the summer sun doesn’t damage your finances With talk of this summer set to be the hottest for 12 years, it’s hard not to feel happy about the heatwave.
Yet despite the many benefits that a little sunshine has on our health and wellbeing, evidence suggests that it can be detrimental to our wealth. As we feel the sun on our skin, our purse strings often loosen. Many people find it difficult to control their summer spending, which is clear from the number of customers visiting Everyday Loans’ new Mansfield branch asking for the team’s support. One recent study* showed that 57% of
Brits spend more money in the summer months. Nearly a quarter of these say they rely on credit to fund their extra sunny-day spending, which comes down to there simply being “more things to do”. But it’s important to try not to spend on impulse because of the weather, as this can – and usually does - wreak havoc on our budgets. For those who are already feeling the pinch, the UK’s largest non-standard branch-based lender can help with any borrowing needs. Daniel De Quincey, Manager of Everyday Loan’s Mansfield branch, said: “It’s important to keep an eye on your bank balance over the next few months. Set a budget now that will
account for the odd summer treat, but steer clear of splurging money that you don’t have.
“When customers come to us for help, we first look through their finances to determine where they’re spending less wisely. As a responsible lender, we always meet face-to-face and get to understand their needs on a human, personal level. This way, we’re best placed to help get them back on to their financial feet – and we know that they can comfortably manage our repayments.
“Working out exactly how much you spend in relation to what you earn is a very useful exercise for everyone. Most people are shocked by what they find.” Here are Everyday Loans’ top five tips to sticking within your means this summer. #1 Undertake a frank financial self-assessment Look at all outgoings and work out what’s essential. Cut out anything that pushes spending beyond income. Once you know what you've got, you can work out your summer spends. #2 Be open with family and friends Everyone wants to go out for a drink or a bite to eat when the sun is shining. But if you tell friends why you’re saving, they’ll happily opt for cheaper alternative.
Why not invite them round to yours for a couple rather than going to the pub? #3 Work out what it would cost in work time If you’re tempted to spend on non-essentials that you can’t really afford, work out how many hours it would take you to earn that money. Is it worth it? #4 Leave the car and move more Make the most of the warmer weather and lighter evenings and walk more. You’ll look better in those shorts too! #5 Make your own Kids love a picnic. So instead of buying food out or on-the-go this summer holiday, pack your own instead.

Farnsfield Local History Society Woodborough THE DUCHESS OF CURIOSITIES was Margaret Cavendish Holles Harley Bentinck, the Duchess of Portland, born at Welbeck in 1715 to the Duke and Duchess of Oxford. From a very early age she began collecting and some of the collection can still be seen at the Harley and Portland Galleries at Welbeck Abbey. Lily Ann Dawes gave us a fascinating talk on the woman who was not prepared to deal with just domestic matters but had many interests, corresponded with Alexander Pope, Rousseau, Joseph Banks, helping to finance the journeys of Banks and Cook and receiving shells and other interesting items from their travels. George III and his large family were regular visitors at her home in Buckinghamshire, Bulstrode Hall (now no longer there) where she had a zoo and aviaries. The famous Portland
Vase was bought by her not long before her death in 1785 for the incredible sum of £2000 from Lord Hamilton. (The money was used to pay off Lady Hamilton's considerable gambling debts) After her death over 4000 items from her collection were sold and many went to become the basis of the British Museum. In July the Local History Society has its Summer Social which is for members only, no meeting in August so we shall not have a speaker in the village centre until 12th September when Bill Taylor's talk will be about the ROBIN HOOD LINE – THE RAILWAY BETWEEN NOTTINGHAM AND WORKSOP. We have cancelled the proposed visit to Eden Camp as there was not enough interest.
The English Summer - Get gardening with Greg With summer here, it’s time to enjoy your garden and some basic routine maintenance will keep it looking at it’s best. Deadheading flowering and summer bedding plants will encourage further flowering while removing decaying plant debris will help discourage diseases and pests. For a second flush of blooms, cut back perennials after flowering (such as delphiniums and hardy geraniums) and rose heads which should be pruned back by approximately 15cm to a healthy leaf joint. All plants, particularly flowering and fruiting types, will benefit from regular feeding throughout the growing season. Nibbled or sad-looking plants are likely to be under attack from pests such as aphids, vine weevils or slugs and will need treating. There are some great new organic products on the market if you don’t want to use chemicals. In the veg garden use an insect netting over your crops to avoid spraying. Diseases such as mildew, a powdery white substance, can become a problem during the summer and will need treating with an appropriate fungicide. Damp down greenhouses during hot weather to discourage red spider mite, which thrives in dry heat. While all plants need regular watering during warm weather, pay particular attention to any plants in pots or baskets which dry out very quickly and anything newly planted. Shrubs and trees which are planted during the summer will need a lot of water, considerably more than you might think, to get established. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day so as not to scorch the foliage. Mulching beds and borders will help the soil retain moisture as well as keeping weeds at bay. This is a good month to get on top of difficult perennial weeds with a good spray and regular hoeing in the veg garden will stop it getting overrun. There is a stunning choice of flowering perennials in colour at the garden centre this time of year, hollyhocks, echinacea, rudbeckia and achillea for example, so it’s a good time to chose some new plants. Lupins continue to flower during July and
were very popular at Chelsea this year. Tall plants such as these, foxgloves & delphiniums look glorious when planted amongst contrasting shorter plants such as alchemilla mollis or zingy lime green euphorbias. Foxgloves can be sown from seed now for flowering next year, along with forget-me-nots, stocks & wallflowers. Bridge Club
The AGM is upon us and will be held at the beginning of July. It has been a very busy year. Most members of the committee are prepared to stand again and all club members have been invited to offer the committee their services. The constitution needed revising after many years and is ready to be put to members. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has implications for us as it does for everybody, although some of us wonder whether it isn’t a repetition of the millennium bug that turned out to be something of a damp squib - the exercise of common sense should be sufficient for clubs and societies such as ours. Nonetheless, we have a policy in place and are revising our working practices. Considerable debate has taken place about how best to run our teams next year in order to best capitalise on our recent successes. All members are being asked whether they would like to participate in team playing against other Clubs - it may not be everybody’s cup of tea. We continue regularly to have forty or fifty players on Thursday evenings at Woodborough Village Hall at 7pm and large quantities of chocolate biscuits are consumed. The Club welcomes visitors - telephone Jane whose number appears below or take a risk and just turn up. To get a feel of what sort of Club we are, have a look at our website details below. Garden Bird of the Month - Tree Sparrow The Tree Sparrow is known as the House Sparrow’s country cousin. It is a bird of lowland rural areas rather than urban sprawl. The name Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) is a little misleading because it is not classed as a woodland bird and neither does it live in mountainous regions as its Latin name suggests. It was probably named Tree Sparrow because it nests and roosts in tree holes. It is slightly smaller than the House Sparrow and has a chestnut brown head and nape, white cheeks and a black cheek spot. Both sexes are similar. Compared to the House Sparrow, it is a shy bird but is happy to live in colonies with its own kind. If you want to encourage Tree Sparrows to your garden, it is better if you can erect more than one nest box or better still, a terrace so that they can become a colony. You can encourage them by putting out sunflower seeds or hearts. Millet apparently, is one of their favourite foods but during the summer months they eat invertebrates
and caterpillars and will feed their young with insects only. Tree Sparrows suffered a drastic decline between 1970 and 2008 when their numbers fell by a huge 90%. This was down to
The musical evenings came to a close for the first half of the year, with a magnificent performance by TALON on June 8th. They performed an acoustic set to a very receptive sell out audience, and it is no wonder that they sell out at much bigger venues than ours. There are a few events happening before we start the autumn programme on Friday 14th September with the UK's premier female country artist LISA STANLEY. On Friday 13th July a Charity Disco featuring Michael Buble aka LEE HUTTON is taking place, to raise money for a village defibrillator which will be sited at the village hall and available for emergencies 24/7. Tickets are £12 each and available
from www.musicatthehall.co.uk (no Fees). Also from Abbey Gates Primary School PTA chairman Caroline, Suzanne Goss and Nat Stringer at the C of E Primary School. On Saturday 18th August 70's JUKEBOX HEROES arrive at the hall. This 6 piece band consists members from groups of the era ranging from Bay City Rollers to Sweet and Paper Lace to the Glitter Band. Tickets are £15 each and are available by calling Peter on 01623 360155 or 07745 791337 also available at Adcock Financial in Milton Court. Saturday 1st September is the chosen day to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Ravenshead Village Hall. There will be activities for all the family from midday to 6.00 pm
changes in agricultural methods, hedgerow clearance, loss of old trees and more efficient farming techniques. Neither was there any surplus of grain around farm buildings. Lately however, it seems their numbers are only just beginning to pick up but it is too early to say if their numbers will continue to increase. Do look out for Tree Sparrows, especially so during the winter months as they often mix with House Sparrows and finches. Remember to look out for the little black cheek spot. Women have always known that hair becomes more difficult to style and maintain with age, but experts now confirm that it does indeed age along with our skin and bodies.
be cut and styled a little differently. He says softer, loose curls or waves make anyone appear younger, whereas sharp angles and severe shapes will have the opposite effect.
Supply nutrients to your hair through a healthy diet and supplements of essential fatty acids. Hair is definitely a reflection of inner health. •Drink plenty of water to keep skin and hair hydrated.
Whenever hair is neglected or abused its strength starts to decline, no matter what your age. However, ageing hair is far more delicate and needs a little extra tender loving care.
Pelusi also suggests that ageing hair looks at its best when treated to softer, slightly lighter hair colour with varying tones. Dark, solid shades must be avoided. Hair colour also needs to complement skin and eye colour, so a consultation with a skilled salon colourist is advisable.
Exercise helps maintain a healthy blood flow to the scalp. This will help encourage healthy hair growth.
Pelusi offers his top 10 anti-ageing tips for hair.
Get plenty of rest. Proper sleep is very important to maintain the health of the entire body, including the hair.
Beautiful hair - whatever your age
Hair actually starts to age after the age of 25. Each strand shrinks 10 per cent in diameter and may become duller due to loss of the colour pigment melanin. Just like prematurely aged skin, hair can also be prematurely aged by abuse and misuse of chemicals and heat styling tools. Signs include weakness or brittleness, dryness, flaking scalp, split ends and an extra fine and frizzy texture. Ageing hair needs to be strengthened and moisturised by the right combination of products. This can be easily achieved with a daily care regime as well as the right haircut. Celebrity New York hair designer Philip Pelusi recommends that ageing hair
•Use products specifically designed to rejuvenate ageing hair. Dove Pro-Age shampoo and conditioner is specifically made for ageing hair, but your hairdresser can tailor-make a hair care regime for you. Follow the regime consistently for best results. Treat your hair to regular salon hair and scalp treatments for deep, intense conditioning.
Maintain a relaxation programme to keep stress at bay. Stress can take its toll on the health of your hair and skin.
Keep the scalp in its optimum healthy state. A healthy scalp means healthy hair. Treat wet hair with tender loving care. Apply a detangling product before combing it and use a wide toothed comb only. Never brush wet hair as it will break. Sleep on a satin pillowcase to reduce friction on the hair, which can cause breakage.

Have a heart healthy BBQ this summer With the summer months approaching, what better way to kick-start a healthy eating plan than eating good food in the great outdoors? You don't have to load up your barbeque with fatty burgers and sausages - with our tips for healthy grilling you can enjoy al-fresco eating with family and friends and be kind to your heart at the same time. Keep the amount of saturated fat and salt to a minimum by trying oily fish instead of meat - salmon and sardines taste great grilled on the BBQ and the Omega 3 oils are good for your heart. Combine them with vegetable kebabs or corn on the cob, which you can cook slowly on the cooler part of the BBQ. Make use of marinades! They're a great way to add flavour to chicken or lean beef, and will stop the meat drying out without adding fat or salt. Try low-fat natural yoghurt mixed with Indian spices to add a spicy theme to your BBQ. But if you just can't imagine a barbeque without a burger or two, try making your own using lean beef mince or turkey mince, and try a colourful salad as an accompaniment instead of an uninspiring burger bun. Try some of our heart health inspired summer BBQ recipes below and you can't go far wrong. Home Made Burgers (makes 4) 540g/1lb 3oz lean minced beef 1 chopped onion 25g/1oz chopped coriander 1tbsp Dijon mustard 1tbsp olive oil a little salt and freshly ground black pepper Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir until well combined. Shape into 4 patties, then grill on the BBQ, turning occasionally until evenly cooked. Serve with a crunchy salad, a wholemeal pitta or a Ciabatta bun.
For the marinade: 265ml low fat natural yoghurt 3tbsp mustard oil 9 cloves of garlic, crushed, 2.5 teaspoons paprika 2.5 teaspoons ground coriander 2.5 teaspoons ground cumin 1.5 teaspoons ground ginger 0.5 teaspoons red, orange or yellow food colouring
Grill the marinated chicken on the BBQ until well cooked, turning occasionally. Baste with any remaining marinade. Serve with salad and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Marinated Vegetable Kebabs (Makes 8) For the kebabs: 8 bamboo skewers, soaked in water overnight 3 medium courgettes, cut diagonally into thick slices 4 peppers, cut into large chunks 8 cherry tomatoes 4 red onions, cut into quarters 2 corn on the cobs, leaves removed and cut into 2cm thick pieces For the marinade: 12 tablespoon olive oil Juice and zest from 1 lime 2 teaspoon of demerara sugar 3 teaspoon dried oregano 4 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
Remove the skin from the chicken and make short slashes in the flesh. Rub the lemon or lime juice into the flesh and set aside for half an hour. Tandoori spiced chicken drumsticks (Serves 6) 6 large chicken legs 4 tbsp lime or lemon juice
Mix all the other ingredients in a bowl until thoroughly combined. Rub the mixture into the chicken, then cover and leave to marinate overnight in the fridge.
Prepare the vegetables and spread them on a non-metallic dish in a single layer. Mix the marinade ingredients and pour over the vegetables, ensuring each piece is thoroughly coated. Leave to marinate in the fridge for a few hours before threading onto the soaked bamboo skewers, ensuring each kebab has an even mix of veg. Grill on the BBQ, turning regularly until the vegetables are softened and evenly coloured.

Free exercise tracking app Story of girls who changed at Mansfield Centres the world A free exercise tracking app, launched in Mansfield earlier this month, is proving a big hit with customers at Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Complex, Oak Tree Leisure Centre and the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.
“Our leisure centres are all about encouraging the people of Mansfield to be active and enjoy their exercise time, whether it be on their own, in groups or as a family. The More Fitness App is another way we’re hoping to engage people even more.”
The More Fitness app is available for all centre users, giving an easy and interactive way to book classes, record workouts, enter challenges to win prizes, and connect with other members.
More Fitness synchronises with other wearable fitness devices and apps, such as Fitbit, My Fitness Pal, Strava, Garmin and Map My Fitness.
In just two weeks, Mansfield District Leisure Trust, which oversees the running of the centres via its managing agent, Serco Leisure, has seen almost 500 downloads for the new app.
It’s available to everyone, not just centre members, and can be downloaded via the iTunes or Google Play stores.
Paul Suter, Serco Leisure’s marketing manager for the Mansfield centres, said: “The More Fitness App is a really exciting development for our customers and staff. It’s so easy to download and use; we’re already seeing great uptake in numbers.

Co-Op in Mansfield in £30,000 fundraising drive for fire fighters charity A Mansfield Co-op food store has helped to raise £30,000 to support the work of the Fire Fighters Charity. The money has been raised by Co-op colleagues at the Victoria Street store in Shirebrook along with staff across the region who ran marathons, hosting raffles, cake sales, pub quizzes and even a sky dive. The Co-op food store is saying a huge “thank you” to its members and customers in the community, and will continue to raise money for a further 12 months for the “worthy cause”. The charity - which offers a range of ser-
vices including: rehabilitation; health and well-being; nursing; recuperation and advice – was presented with the money after a year of fundraising from Co-op colleagues across the region. Co-op Regional Manager, Danny Howarth, said: “As a community retailer our stores are committed to making a difference to local life. I would like to thank our members, colleagues and customers in Mansfield for their fantastic support. Supporting communities is at the heart of everything we do and the amazing sum raised illustrates the importance of the Fire Fighters Charity,
and how it is a cause close to people’s hearts. Fire Fighters put their own lives at risk to help others and so I am delighted that we have been able to raise funds to help this very worthy cause.” Fire Fighters Charity Regional Fundraiser, Laura Harden, said: “It’s fantastic that the Co-op have been able to support the Fire Fighters Charity in the way in which they have done. £30,000 will provide rehabilitation and support for firefighters, along with guidance from our dedicated team which equips people with the tools they may need to self-manage their conditions once they return home.” For more information and details on how you can donate to the Fire Fighters Charity, which is almost entirely funded through donations from the fire community and public, visit: https://www.firefighterscharity.org.uk/donate/

The charity Literacy Volunteers, formed in 1996, needs more volunteers to work with pupils on a one-to-one basis on Nottinghamshire schools and Early Years settings.
The next training courses are planned for Mansfield at the end of June and in September.
The charity encourages children to develop an interest and love for books. It urged people to “help break down barriers and open doors to lifelong achievement.” Volunteers do not teach reading, but talk, read and play word games with children to help build their vocabulary and confidence through words and spelling. Volunteers do not need formal qualifications, and training and ongoing support is provided.
A spokesman said: “If you can give just half a day a week’s regular commitment for at least one school year, and would like to become part of a committed volunteering force that is doing great work improving

All about Hernias - The facts you need to know A hernia occurs if an organ pushes an opening through the muscle that holds it in place. Abdominal hernias are the most common form and they generally occur in certain places such as the groin area, belly button area and sometimes in the upper thigh. Hernias do not go away on their own and, although they are not initially a threat to life, they may need to be operated upon if they get worse. If left untreated, further complications can include them protruding further and causing pain, nausea or constipation. WHAT TYPES OF HERNIAS ARE THERE? There are several common types of hernias. The inguinal hernia is the most common type and is found in the groin. This type of hernia is more commonly found in men rather than women. The hiatus hernia occurs when a part of the stomach protrudes up through the diaghram into the chest cavity. It is most common in people over 50 years of age. Hiatus hernias can create another symptom by causing gastroesophageal reflux which causes a burning sensation in the oesophagus. Umbilical hernias often occur in children and babies under six months old, when the intestines bulge into the abdominal wall near the belly button. This type of hernia is the only one that can often go away on its own as the muscle walls get stronger. However, surgery may be required if it doesn’t.
WHAT CAUSES HERNIAS AND WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Hernias are often caused by muscle weakness and develop over time. Causes of this weakness are due to factors such as: •age, •congenital defects, •an injury, •surgery, •pregnancy, •being constipated, •lifting heavy weights, •persistently coughing and sneezing, •being overweight, •smoking, •a family history of hernias. All of the above can contribute to weakened muscles that might give rise to a hernia. The most common symptom is a lump in
the affected area, but pain and discomfort may be felt especially when coughing or bending over. You may also feel a burning or aching sensation at the site of the hernia.
of prevention, but by doing some simple things such as not smoking, mainting a good body weight, not lifting heavy weights and avoiding straining on the toilet, the chances of having a hernia may be reduced.
DIAGNOSIONG A HERNIA? Hernias are usually diagnosed by a physical examination although a hiatus hernia may be diagnosed by a barium X-ray or endoscopy. Ultrasounds can be used on babies and children for diagnosis of an umbilical hernia.
WHAT NOW? If you have any digestive health questions or would like to be tested for any gut issues or feel you might be intolerant to certain foods that may be causing you some digestive discomfort give me a call today and I will be happy to assess your requirements. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO TREAT HERNIAS? Often dietary changes are suggested to help treat a hernia, like avoiding spicy foods that might cause heart burn. Avoiding heavy lifting, and not lying down or bending over after a meal are also often recommended. There are also certain exercises that can be done to strengthen the affected area. If a hernia is growing and causing severe pain and discomfort surgery may have to be considered, the most common procedure being to patch the affected area with surgical mesh. PREVENTION IS BEST. If you have a propensity for developing hernias there isn’t always a complete method

New league for Wrens Rainworth MWFC are well into preparations for the coming season, following confirmation that they will be competing in the East Midlands Counties League next season. Pre-season training is now well under way and the Wrens have arranged a programme of pre-season games as they build up for the new campaign in a new league and under a new manager.
bulk of the squad was Sheffield-based, and he has already secured several new players who have committed to the club for the coming season.
New assistant manager, Paul Rockley
New manager, Ben Marvin Boss Ben Marvin and assistant Paul Rockley will begin the season with a totally new squad. Most of last season’s squad have moved on, may following former manager Craig Denton and his management team to Worksop Town, where the former Wrens boss has been named as new manager. Marvin will have a drastically reduced budget to work with compared to last season, but his new squad will essentially be made up of Mansfield/Nottingham-based players as opposed to last season when the
This season will also see the beginning of the link with youth side Rainworth Rangers who will be playing under the Wrens’ banner, and as the link strengthens over time the hope is that this will provide a feeder for players into the first team. One huge advantage of stepping down into the EMCL will be the end of long journeys to away matches – no more 200-mile round trips to the likes of Pickering and Bridlington – indeed the Wrens’ longest away journey will be just 38 miles to Ashby-dela-Zouch. The full constitution of the league will be: Arnold Town, Ashby Ivanhoe, Barrow Town, Belper United, Borrowash Victoria, Clifton All Whites, Clipstone, Eastwood Community, Gedling MW, Graham Street Prims, Heanor Town, Holbrook Sports, Ingles (based at Shepshed), Kimberley MW,
Newark Flowserve, Radford, Rainworth MW, Selston, Teversal, West Bridgford - that is 12 clubs from within Nottinghamshire, five from Derbyshire and three from Leicestershire, meaning an abundance of local derbies. Meanwhile the following pre-season matches have been arranged: Sat 7th July FC Bolsover (h); Thu 12th July Mansfield Town U23 (h); Tue 17th July Basford United (h); Sat 21st July Sherwood Colliery (h); Tue 24th July Southwell City (a); Sat 28th July Mansfield Hosiery Mills (a). League fixtures have not yet been released, but the season will start on Saturday 4th August, with the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup on 11th and the first qualifying round of the FA Vase on 18th – draws for the two FA competitions are also due any time now.
