News & Information Rain holds off for Guides’ ‘Night in a Box’ 5

Guides from Mansfield and Rainworth joined some 100 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire on Friday (19 May) in sleeping out under cardboard to highlight the plight of the homeless.

Aged from 10 upwards, the girls began to arrive at Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s Elton campsite from 7.00pm, all armed with a cardboard box which would be their only shelter for the night. After queuing for a simple supper from the soup kitchen, they then warmed up during a campfire singalong before bedding down in their boxes. Despite the gloomy forecast, the rain held off for most of the night and the Guides rose early on Saturday morning – still smiling!

Talking afterwards, the Guides acknowledged their heightened appreciation of some of the issues associated with homelessness. ‘You’d have to get a new box every night,’ said Sami Hurst of 19th Mansfield Guides. ‘Our box collapsed and I used three pairs of socks because they got so wet!’

0115 987 7220 or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk For details on Framework and its work with the homeless in Nottingham, visit www.frameworkha.org

Jess Atkin, also from 19th Mansfield Guides, added: ‘I wouldn’t stay for another night but it was a fun experience with my friends,’ whilst Erin Gamble of 4th Rainworth Guides said that she had felt the cold. ‘If I had to do it all the time I’d be tired because I didn’t sleep very well,’ she admitted.

All the girls had been sponsored to take part in the sleep-out and the money raised will be donated to Framework, the Nottingham-based homelessness charity.

Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is recruiting additional adult volunteers in order to whittle down the waiting lists and create more events and opportunities like the Night in a Box for girls and young women all over the county. Anyone interested in finding out what’s involved is invited to call

Security & Safety Bedtime means Tech time Send your news and photos to chloe@news-journal.co.uk

THE average British adult spends an average of 57 minutes on their gadgets in bed before going to sleep, according to new research.

A third (32%) of Britons fall trap to watching television in bed, revealed research of 1,012 UK adults carried out by gadgets and technology e-tailer, LaptopsDirect.co.uk. The device most commonly used by Brits in bed was unsurprisingly smartphones, with 68% using them from the comfort of their duvet. One in five (19%) use their tablet before sleeping, 14% admitted to listening to music in bed, while 8% confessed to playing on games consoles. Mark Kelly, marketing manager at LaptopsDirect.co.uk, said “It is interesting to see just how many Brits will postpone sleep

to play on their devices in bed.

Gadgets are great and can be really fun but using them right before sleep can be a little disruptive to sleep quality Those aged 18-24 were most likely to use tech in bed, racking up an average of 71 minutes in front of the screen.

LaptopsDirect.co.uk is the UK’s largest online laptop specialist, selling a wide range of new and refurbished laptops from leading brands, as well as a wide range of other lifestyle gadgets. For more information, visit www.laptops direct.co.uk

More than half (56%) have a morning alarm set on their smartphone, while 22% use some form of technology or app to monitor their sleep. Kelly added: “Technology such as smartphone apps and fitness bands can also be used to measure the quality of sleep and help us nod off when we struggle to sleep. “The advancements in technology and its increased accessibility mean that we are able to get a better insight into our sleeping habits once we have closed our eyes.”

Wired up for working at home thanks to technology SMARTPHONES, tablets and wireless technology mean that we are now more connected than ever to the virtual world. The advances have opened up previously unimaginable accessibility of entertainment, networking and shopping — but there are downsides as well. The average UK worker now puts in more than three weeks of overtime a year just by answering calls and emails at home, a new study reveals. In a survey of 1,000 workers, 93% of people say they keep working when they have left the office — for a total of three hours and 31 minutes each week. That's a grand total of 15 hours a month or 183 hours a year — the equivalent of 23 extra working days a year. But while half do it simply to stay organised, 20% want to impress the boss by putting in the extra hours. A further 37% reply to work emails in bed to keep on top of things. And they're also using their mobiles to mix work and their personal life in new ways. In a nod to Britain's changing work environment, 38% of those polled believe their job would now be impossible without mobile access to work email. Most people are consolidating their devices and many use the same phone for personal and work use — just 15% still carry separate personal and work phones.

Smartphones and tablets have made it much easier to be able to work on the move, and that's helping people choose when and where to get things done. At the school gate, on the train or in the queue at the coffee shop, this new wave of connected device is enabling people to be more productive than ever. The study also reveals: * 66% of people check their work emails before 7am. * The average UK worker checks their phone at 6:51am. * More than a third confess that they respond to work mails in bed. * 61% use their commute to read and reply to work emails. * The work day is getting longer - 15% still respond to work emails after 10pm. * 65% don't go to sleep until they've had a final check of work emails. * 33% can't get through Saturday morning without checking their mail. * 29% routinely check work emails at the dinner table and 16% reply during their meal.

Andy Jacques, of mobile security software company Good Technology which sponsored the study, said: “There was a time when it was difficult to continue working outside of the office without carrying a laptop. “But with today's 'always on' society, people are pretty much working from the moment they wake up until the moment they fall asleep. “While most of our customers believe their employees do work more hours as a result of this accessibility, they also appreciate and welcome the enhanced work-life balance that comes when employees have more freedom and choice as to where and when they get their work done. “Today, many businesses are allowing employees to use their personal phones for work. “In fact, 42% of the people we surveyed are using the same phone for work and personal activity, which means that they are now carrying around not only sensitive corporate information, but irreplaceable personal data on the same device.”

One in two people in the UK will be affected by cancer CANCER Research UK tells us that one in two people will develop cancer at some point in their lives, according to the most accurate forecast to date and published in the (British Journal of Cancer). Thanks to research, the UK’s cancer survival has doubled over the last 40 years and around half of patients now survive the disease for more than 10 years. The new figures highlight a need to bolster public health and NHS cancer services so they can cope with a growing and ageing population and the looming demands for better diagnosis, treatment and earlier diagnosis. Prevention must also play an important role in the concerted effort required to reduce the impact of the disease to help people to be more informed about

what to look for the signs and symptoms, get an early diagnosis, access to treatment, aftercare, and survival and beyond. We want somewhere for anyone to come and importantly reduce the fear of the condition for all. Members of the Abbey Medical Group Patient Participation Group along with Inspire at Blidworth Library have launched their idea for such a place. The Pathfinder Pop-Up Centre was launched on the 14th May and people have signed up to join. Interested people can come along, have a cuppa and chat on the second Saturday of the month, from 10am to 12noon, at Blidworth library, NG21 0PP. If you want to know more, ring Gilly on 01623 797138 or Jane 01623 480038.

Your health matters It is National Eye Health Week from 13th to 19th June and Abbey Medical Group PPG is arranging two events at its surgeries to encourage patients to realise the importance of eye health, to everyone from the baby to older citizens. Vision really matters as this is the sense people fear losing the most, yet many of us don’t know how to look after our eyes — so do something for you or a family member, friend or neighbour. Tell them about National Eye Health Week. Did you know 1.8 million people in the UK are living with sight loss. For 53% of those, a simple sight test and new spectacles could really help. A sight test can detect early signs of conditions like glaucoma, which can be treated if found early enough. During a sight test, other health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure may be detected. For healthy eyes, we need to eat well, don’t smoke and wear glasses to protect your eyes in bright sunlight. What is happening in your local area – Ravenshead Surgery, Monday 13th June, 10-12noon

Wedding Dress trends 7 sensational summer tips

THE wedding season has arrived and I have been considering this year’s wedding dress trends. Well as each season’s fashion trends change, the wedding dresses have to keep pace with the new upcoming look. Expect a fairytale dress and a cathedral train dress for the more traditional bride. While the modern bride may prefer the skirt to be shorter at the front and longer at the back, cold shoulder effect or even a jumpsuit to get a more updated look. If you prefer more colours in your wedding dress, floral wedding dresses are also in. The floral dresses will look beautiful in cream, pearl white with rose, crimson, ruby, apricot and carrot shades for flowers on the dress. When choosing a floral wedding dress, be careful that the bridesmaid dresses and accessories blend in with it. In keeping with this year’s trends, I have got this floral dress designed with a bit more colour, which will go well with lilac and rose bridesmaid dresses.

I will be exhibiting at an Independent Designer Showcase on Monday 5th June, from 5pm-9pm, at Trafalgar Warehouse in Sheffield City Centre. Please do come over as it would be nice to meet some of you. If you want more information on the event and what I will be selling contact me on www.facebook.com/ CrowdCapture/ Tarannum Shad

HAVE you already been to the doctor with your pain issues and been told there is nothing they can do? Unfortunately millions of people face this problem on a regular basis, and living with pain seriously affects the quality of life of anyone who is forced to endure it. Generally speaking, pain can be divided into two distinct types: acute pain and chronic pain. When acute pain is experienced it lets us know what needs attention. Chronic pain is generally ongoing and can be relentless. When pain outlives its usefulness it needs to be silenced, but rarely do we look to ourselves in an attempt to control our chronic pain. Because we are so used to looking to other people or medicine for help with our pain we have learned a mind set of helplessness, and yet real pain relief and effective pain control can be found within yourself and your own mind.

To understand that we have the resources within our self to control pain is a major step forward in releasing its truly debilitating grip on our life. By using hypnotherapy, self hypnosis, EFT, NLP and HCBT we can instruct our own mind to dramatically reduce — and in many cases totally eliminate — any pain we may be experiencing. If you or someone you care about are suffering from chronic pain help is at hand at our therapy practice. We have enormous experience of helping clients and will teach you how to control even long-standing pain by using the power of your own mind. Our treatments will help you to regain control in your life without medication or apparatus. Telephone Clem Turner today for more information on 01623 556234. REJOICE — the warm weather is (hopefully) finally here. Long days spent soaking up the rays, barbecues and beaches; it all sounds like great fun, but chances are your body, face, hair, and eyes may not all agree. Keen to help you stave off the bad side of summer, and stay looking gorgeous, we enlisted the help of Amanda Elias, beauty expert and founder of Bravura London, to divulge her top tips for protecting your looks at this time of year.

Pain management

1 - The first thing you want to think about is sun protection; the sun is the main cause of premature ageing which can leave your skin dull, dry, wrinkled and with hyperpigmentation (brown spots). Protect all exposed skin with a broad spectrum SPF (protects against both UVA and UVB) of at least 30, preferably a mineral SPF which acts as a sunblock to instantly block the sun's rays. Look for a product that's waterproof and don't forget your lips, ears and the back of your neck. Re-apply frequently. 2 - You may know about cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising your face, but do you spend as much TLC on your body? Ensure you exfoliate at least twice a week and if possible, slather yourself daily (after your shower) in your favourite body lotion. 3 - Do you find your skin flushes when you get hot? Keep a refreshing water spray or toner spray at hand to spritz your face and neck when you feel yourself overheating. 4 - Avoid wearing perfumes on your skin; when the sun hits the areas of skin that contain perfumes it can cause irritation. Fragrance your hair by spraying your hairbrush then brush through your locks, every time you swish your hair you'll be surrounded by a beautiful fragrance. 5 - Sun and lip gloss aren't a good combination — remember the days of people baking in the sun covered in baby oil? Same thing. Get yourself a good lip balm that contains an SPF (you can get plenty that have colour) or line your lips with a lip pencil then top with a clear SPF balm. 6 - Parched skin after too much alcohol and sun? Intensely nourish your skin with an oil such as jojoba oil, this non-comedogenic (won't block your pores) oil is more of a wax and is close to your skin’s natural oil. For sunburnt skin, help the healing process with pure aloe vera gel and apply three to four times a day. 7 - Don't forget to hydrate yourself. To keep your body functioning properly and to aid in the removal of toxins from the body it needs to be well hydrated, so be sure to drink two to three litres of liquid (sadly this doesn't include dehydrating substances such as cocktails and coffee) per day.

Aunty Mavis and the Woollilots’ adventures

AUNTY Mavis was preparing to go on a very special journey and the Woollilots were gathering at her house. She was wondering what she might need for the journey. “Don't worry,” said Little Angel, “you won't need anything because you will have everything that you might need.” The sky was full of soft white clouds and birds were flying from tree to tree, chattering and singing soft, gentle songs so peacefully that Aunty Mavis nodded off to sleep for a while. She found herself in the forest where all manner of creature came out of hiding in

order to cheer her on... step by step. A horse, pure white, with a golden crown, sat on the ground, while Aunty Mavis was lifted somehow onto its back. The horse stood up and began to trot. Aunty Mavis rode past a waterfall, clear as crystal, making a tinkling sound, sweet and harmonious. Flowers of many types and magnificent colours, their fragrances lingering along her path, were so breathtakingly beautiful that she felt joy beyond joy.

Eventually she arrived at the mouth of a tunnel, which was full of light. Little Angel beckoned her in safely and lovingly, so deeply loving... more angels surrounded her with their wings. She looked back and found the Woollilots waving and cheering. A skylark fluttered high and sang with all its heart and soul and Aunty Mavis found such peace in its song, so joyful... so deeply loving... © Christine Michael

Local swim school trains teachers in deaf awareness LOCAL swim school Puddle Ducks supported Deaf Awareness Week (15 – 21 May 2017), partnering with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) to provide deaf awareness training to all their swimming teachers. Research conducted by the NDCS found that 40% of deaf children have difficulty accessing swimming opportunities, which can lead to a lack of confidence and the potential to fall behind their hearing peers. The research also revealed that a third of deaf people aged twelve and above can’t swim as far as ten metres. Those statistics encouraged NDCS and Puddle Ducks to put a plan into action, to support deaf young people in the UK. Ashleigh Scott, swimming development officer at NDCS, explained: “Unfortunately, too many deaf children are currently being denied the opportunity to learn to swim, as some swimming providers don’t understand their needs. “We know that these barriers can be overcome; by making small changes to swimming lessons, teachers and coaches can ensure that young deaf people are fully included. “We’re delighted to support Puddle Ducks’ positive approach, ensuring inclusion for young deaf people.” Nicola Wilson owner of Puddle Ducks commented: “We are proud to partner with the NDCS. They are a fantastic charity

that work tirelessly supporting young deaf people in the UK. We now provide deaf awareness training for all our teachers, and many have also learnt basic sign language in order to communicate effectively will all children in their class. “Children are at the centre of everything we do, and we want to continue providing a fantastic experience to suit every child’s needs when they come to us.” Puddle Ducks’ award-winning swimming programmes take an innovative approach

to swimming, employing highly-trained teachers who can identify a child’s level of ability and adapt lessons and activities to suit the needs of each child in the class. Puddle Ducks has made deaf awareness training compulsory for all their teachers across the network, with over 300 teachers completing the training so far. For more information on the classes available at Puddle Ducks call 01949 831322 or visit www.puddleducks.com/local-teams/ lincolnshire

BHI Museum launches summer opening 2017 THE BHI Museum has announced details of its summer opening arrangements for 2017, as part of exciting new developments.

In a first step to deliver the museum’s commitment to open its doors more regularly, it will be open to visitors every Friday from 26th May through to 8th September 2017, from 11am-3pm (last admission 2.30pm). The museum is based at the home of the British Horological Institute, in Upton. The museum houses a fascinating collection of clocks, watches, timepieces and archives brought together by BHI members since the founding of the Institute in 1858. The BHI Museum Trust was established as a separate registered charity in 1994, transferring the collection into public trust to help ensure its long-term future and enjoyment by all.

Until now the museum has traditionally been accessible only via pre-booked group visits, plus special event days when the clocks go forward and back and a weekend event in June. Visitors can look forward to exploring the museum’s treasures, including Britain’s first three speaking clocks, stunning early 17th Century timepieces, the BHI’s famous 150th anniversary clock, and even Captain Scott’s pocket-watch carried on his ill-fated 1912 Antarctic expedition. General admission is charged at £3 per adult, £2 BHI members, children under-12 free (payment by cash at the door). Parking is available free of charge, and visitors can also enjoy a tasty treat at the independent on-site Clock House Café. Over the course of the next three years the museum plans to extend these seasonal summer opening hours to cover additional

days, including weekends. It also plans to introduce new events and develop museum displays and exhibits to add new features and activities for visitors. The museum team are looking forward to welcoming new visitors, and to learning more about how visitors would like to see the museum develop in the future. The museum is currently recruiting room guide volunteers to assist on these open days. For additional information and enquiries please contact Eleanor Baumber, museum manager, on 01636 817 601 or email bhimuseum@bhi.co.uk The museum is located in the village of Upton, on the A612 between Newark and Southwell at The BHI Museum Trust, Main Street, Upton, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG23 5TE.

Garden Bird of the Month SWIFTS may be identified by their dark brown colouring and sickle-shaped wings. Parties of these birds are usually heard screaming while flying at a low height around the rooftops of houses. This indicates that they are nesting in the vicinity. The speed and aerial dynamics of this bird are truly amazing. The swift is often confused with the swallow and house martin but although there are similarities in their appearance, they are not related. It is a unique bird and does everything on the wing – eating, drinking by catching raindrops, sleeping and mating. It settles only at its nest site, which is usually high up in a wall crevice or under a convex roof tile. A young swift will spend its first two to three years in flight, and will not land until it nests. They never settle voluntarily on the ground as their short legs and long wings make it difficult for them to become airborne again. If stormy weather is forecast, they will fly away and return many hours and sometimes days later. Chicks at the nest become torpid and will survive for several days without being fed. Swifts travel 14,000 miles every year. At night, they fly to about 10,000 feet. They can navigate through different wind speeds while sleeping. Sadly, swifts are declining in numbers, due mainly to demolition of their nesting

sites and the modern methods used in renovating old buildings. Since 1995, the number of swifts has reduced by about a third. However, buildings can be renovated with swifts in mind but a sympathetic attitude is needed from house owners, local authorities, developers and builders. If you are fortunate to have swifts nesting in your property, please consider these birds if you have to carry out any renovation work. For information about practical help for Swifts visit www.swift-conserva tion.org.uk Jean Powley Jean is a voluntary ambassador for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch scheme in Nottinghamshire. If you are interested in birds and other creatures which visit your garden and would like more information about the scheme, contact her at jpbirds@outlook. com or visit www.bto.org/gbw

Mansfield, Music & Me This year we turn our attention to those

Music is a distinctive entity that impacts all our lives in different ways, and it can unlock memories, stimulate conversations, build relationships and identify connections within our own lives and with others, both personal and local. The project Mansfield, Music & Me explores our relationship with music and the memories it creates, from the first single bought to the first dance as a married couple. As well as two touring exhibitions, a loan box has been created, with the overall aim of the project to generate meaningful experiences for the individuals participating. Whether this is undertaken independently

The two touring exhibitions will be visiting seven local libraries within the Mansfield area looking at The Evolution of Music Technology and 1970s Music. Below are the locations and dates of these touring exhibitions, why not pop in and take a look?

Blidworth and District Historical and Heritage Society news THE main speaker for our members’ meeting in May was Dr David Amos who gave a talk entitled D. H. Lawrence And The Eastwood Connection. The event was once again very well attended and David’s talk certainly lived up to expectations. Lawrence was born in 1885 and brought up there in the coalmining town of Eastwood. The local area is mentioned in many of his novels. His birthplace is now a museum. Dr Amos explained and showed us slides of the sites in and around Eastwood that inspired Lawrence. David Amos has spoken to us before and has proved himself a very diligent and hard-working researcher. His knowledge of the history of the East Midlands during the Industrial Revolution is exceptional and in his distinctive style David took us through the changes that occurred in Eastwood during the early years that D. H. Lawrence spent there. David Amos spent time answering questions during the refreshment break and this was followed by the screening of a very informative video of Mansfield, featuring many views of the town during the early years of photography.

OUR picture shows the windmill that still stands on ground opposite St Mary’s Church on Main Street. The windmill has been a Blidworth land mark for many years, and was a working windmill between 1816 and 1920. Our next three meeting details are as follows: • 6th June - Howard Healey, History Of the Newark Air Museum. •4th July - Kevin Winter, The Battle Of Stoke Field.

Local Brownie leader awarded a grant for Blidworth Brownie group

JASMINE has been a Brownie leader (Pink Bear) for over six years at 1st Blidworth (St Mary's) Brownies. Having initially undertaken her Gold DoE, she continued and undertook the qualification to become a leader. Having gone to the University of Derby she has still carried on her community work, helping and assisting leading the Brownies on a weekly basis. She recently applied for a community fund grant from the University of Derby to assist in buying camp beds for the Brownies. Jasmine was awarded £300 to allow the purchase of camp beds; not only will this allow the Brownies to go on a variety of camp holidays but it will also significantly decrease the cost of camp for the parents (camps are far less cheaper when you don't have to pay for equipment or dorms). I am so proud of Jasmine’s achievements and of her community spirit. As a family, we have lived in Blidworth all our lives, and I feel that Jasmine's achievement in applying for and being awarded this large amount of money will help Brownies and their families for many generations to come.

AT our well attended May meeting, members and visitors were told about ‘Our Lord-Lieutenant and his Deputies, Past and Present, their Roles and Duties’ by one of the 48 Deputies, Tom Huggon. The present Lord-Lieutenant is Sir Tom Peace, who took over the appointment in 2012 from Sir Andrew Buchanan. He represents the Queen in this county. Originally it was a military appointment and he could still rally troops if necessary, but now the Lord-Lieutenant and the Deputies are seen attending numerous civic events, church services such as the St George's Day service at the Minster, the various Remembrance Day services held throughout the county, opening of new premises, presenting awards and celebrating a variety of events. Tom showed us pictures of some of the more famous and infamous past holders of the post, like the Fourth Duke of Newcastle and Admiral Sherbrooke VC. Overall it was a most informative and interesting evening much enjoyed and appreciated by the audience. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 14th June, as usual, at 7.30pm in the Lower Hall of the Village Centre. John Taylor is the speaker and the subject is “The Nine Dukes of Portland: the Fascinating History of the Portland Peerage and Welbeck Abbey”. Visitors welcome, £3 includes tea and biscuits There is talk at the Village Centre in July as it will be our Summer Social and no meeting in August.

Farnsfield celebrating

Do you have any photographs of events in Farnsfield from the 1970s onwards? Farnsfield Local History Society has plenty of photographs of earlier events on its website but not from the more recent past. There was the Silver Jubilee in 1977, with street parties and floats, events on the cricket field; the Millennium celebrations; the Golden Jubilee in 2002; and the Diamond Jubilee in 2012. We used to close Main Street on May Day and have stalls. There have been pram races, school sports and It's A Knockout events. Were you involved with any of these? Even though it was before the days of mobile phone cameras and Instagram, there must have been someone taking pictures. Could you look them out and let us copy them and, if you consent, put them on our website as this is now history. You can contact us through the website www.farnsfieldlhs.co.uk or telephone David and Judith Milnes on 01623 882454.

Rock and Potatoes at Summer Fair The Ravenshead Summer Fair, the annual event organised by St Peter’s Church, gains a large popular following due its range of attractions and wide appeal. But this year there are two special features likely to draw even bigger crowds. Alongside the stalls, displays and games in the St Peter’s centre, the church building stages a series of performances by local, music, dance and drama groups. For the event on 24th June the unmissable attraction will be the local Rainworth section of Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Rock Choir. One of 6 choirs across these 2

counties that are part of the wider pioneering Rock Choir movement that has over 23,000 members across the UK. The music and friendship bring to those who take part a new-found confidence in their everyday lives, It’s all about singing for fun. . The anticipated fifty strong choir say they are thrilled to be performing in Ravenshead for the first time. Many of whom are resident in the village. Replacing the traditional scarecrow competition is a new challenge, inviting all ages to design and build a “Mr. Potato Head”. Details are published on the St Peter’s

website. All entries will be displayed at the Fair and anyone attending can vote for their favourite. Prizes and certificates will be awarded to the winners Charles Clarkson, the event organiser, says: “The fair would not be the same without the usual range of homemade cakes and preserves, as well as handmade crafts and a great selection of second hand books. There’s also a tombola and children’s games. All this is enhanced by the fair’s famous bacon butties and shortbreads together with free tea and coffee.”

Problem solving, partnership working and strong relationships with the local supply chain, have been the key drivers to making efficiencies on a boiler replacement programme across Nottinghamshire's schools. Local construction company, Robert Woodhead Ltd, was appointed last year by Arc Partnership, to carry out the £1.6m silo and boiler replacement and maintenance programme. Arc Partnership is an innovative collaboration between Nottinghamshire County Council and Scape Group, a public-sector organisation, dedicated to creating ongoing efficiency and social value via the built environment. Woodhead is still half way through the programme across the county's schools, but has already saved the project £31,000. This has been possible thanks to the project team working together with its supply chain to find better ways of working, which on such a large scheme can present multiple opportunities to make efficiencies. The impact extends beyond the initial programme, with boiler replacements saving schools on the cost of their fuel bills. Where schools have replaced their old silo pellet fed systems with gas or oil boilers, each individual site will save around a quarter on their bills each year, with the initial cost

and improve safety. Woodhead has removed the old store silos and replaced them with a new external silo or internal modern bag silo. This reduces the maintenance costs of the system and also improves the general running and health and safety, by reducing the dust levels and reducing the need to have the systems cleaned as often. The programme is expected to be completed by the end of September 2017, enabling the construction teams to be off-site as soon as possible at the start of the new school year. Steve Gribby, Construction Director at Woodhead, said: "This project has been a real team effort and shown just what we can do when we work collaboratively. It's always our aim to not only complete our work to a high standard and on time, but to make those extra efficiency savings as we go along, to benefit the client we're working with. "Working closely with Arc Partnership, Nottinghamshire County Council and the supply chain has ensured a good collaborative and problem solving relationship is maintained throughout the programme. We have worked closely to deliver these schemes right through from initial feasibility costings, to the delivery and handover of the project. By working closely, we can quickly adapt our methods on site and fit in additional works, or change the programme to suit any unforeseen issues." The scheme has also enabled Woodhead and its contractor partners to work with five apprentices on site, providing them

with valued experience and knowledge, working alongside qualified engineers. Daniel Maher, Managing Director of Arc Partnership, said: "We've been really pleased to see the work that's taken place so far on this scheme. On each project we deliver in collaboration with our supply chain partners we continue to focus on quality of outcome, value for money and customer excellence on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council and its communities - Woodhead understands and delivers on these key drivers. "

Working together saves thousands on Notts schools programme

of replacing the boiler being paid back in just five years. As part of the scheme, Wood Heat boilers have been significantly upgraded to maintain the required standards

Children from St Wilfrid’s CofE Primary School in Calverton and their teacher, mark the success of the boiler programme with representatives from ARC, Woodhead and the school itself.

Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest ST GEORGE’S DAY in Ollerton was the day the village got together and celebrated our patron saint’s day. Many congratulations to the organising committee for putting on such a varied event and for making sure that residents and visitors were treated to a great day. Our Rotary Club members were delighted to stage our annual Duck Race on the River Maun, which entertained many and delighted the onlookers by seeing us wade into the river to collect the ducks at the end of each race. The unclaimed tickets are Race 1 – no.123 Race 2 – no.347 Race 3 - no.586. This year we also offered the young, and the not so young, face-painting, and thank Denise and Sue for their valuable help and for making this event so successful.

Club members were delighted with a recent talk from Claire Clayton and Emma Farrier, of Little Oaks Playgroup in Edwinstowe. The amazing project they are doing requires funding and voluntary help and they would be delighted to receive offers of help in the way of both time and money. The playgroup, run by volunteer parents and grandparents, has proven to be an essential service in the village. Based at Edwinstowe Village Hall, parents, grandparent and carers meet twice a week with their babies and toddlers. The children play and learn in a safe and fun environment with lots of themed toys, crafts and activities. The Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest is delighted to support this community venture and we have donated £100 towards the fencing to kick start their allotment project. Since opening in May 2016, Little Oaks Playgroup has become very popular; 30+ little ones regularly attend each session. Their volunteer organisers plan to extend their provision to include a new, exciting allotment space where little ones can dig, plant and play in their very own plot. There is still a lot of work to be done, however. The plot has been untouched for over a year and is in desperate need of a

makeover. Little Oaks Playgroup are planning an Allotment Makeover day on the first Sunday in June. They are looking for volunteers who can help them clear the site on Sunday, 4th June 10am-2pm at Edwinstowe Allotments (Royal Oak Court). Please contact Clare Clayton 07779 596996 for more details on how you can help this ongoing exciting project. All volunteers will be warmly welcomed with complimentary breakfast cobs and hot drinks. In memory of Kim Wright

THE inaugural charity football match took place on Saturday, 13th May between past players from Rainworth MWFC and Old Elizabethans in aid of The Kim Wright Association. Kim sadly passed away last October after a lengthy battle with cancer and his family set up the charity in his memory to supply grants for local young sportspeople. Kim was a keen follower of football, having played in his earlier years, and had a long association with both Rainworth MWFC and Old Elizabethans with both clubs indebted to him for his generosity over the years. Like all inaugural events, there was a degree of trepidation, but it not only lived up to expectations, it exceeded them, so much so that it is almost certain to become an annual event. It was well supported, raised a lot of money, the football was of a very high

quality but most of all it took place in a fun atmosphere, something Ann, Kim’s widow, had wished for. Kim had always been held in high esteem by both clubs, but the number of people who attended and former players who wanted to play more than reflected that affection. The opening match was an under-11 fixture between Mansfield Athletic and Clipstone Colts Barca, with Clipstone victorious. The main match between Rainworth and Old Elizabethans was preceded by a minute’s applause in memory of Kim, and what followed was an absolute feast of football. The final score of 3-3 was followed by a penalty shoot-out, which was won by Rainworth. The match wasn’t without incident with the second-half delayed whilst a fire on the barbecue was extinguished by Wrens’

chairman ‘Fireman Les’, something Ann said would have brought a huge smile to Kim’s face. Speaking to ‘Sherwood’ after the match, a delighted Ann added: “It’s been a truly fabulous occasion, and it’s wonderful that so many people turned up to support the event. Both games were really good, and OE’s stand in goalkeeper Martin did fantastically. It was a sight for sore eyes watching all those past and present players out there enjoying themselves. “We now want to make this an annual occasion along with the ‘birthday bash’ in January so that we can gradually grow the charity. “It’s been a lot of work but well worth it. We don’t yet know how much was raised in total, but we do know that the raffle alone raised £2,000, so a big thank you to Rainworth Football Club for hosting it and also to everyone who has helped in any way.”

Revisit your childhood at Wellow House School Have you ever wondered what it would be like to revisit your childhood school? For a number of former Wellow House School pupils, ‘wondering’ recently became a reality as they once again ventured into the idyllic, 20-acre grounds to refresh their childhood memories. It was clear they had revelled in their Wellow experience – with one Old Wellovian proudly pointing out his name on the ‘Outstanding Pupil of the Year’ board in 1984 – but even more so that they considered Wellow House to be ‘in excellent hands’ in 2017. Looking around the school today, isn’t difficult to see why. The gentle sounds of leather on willow on a warm June afternoon, harmonious voices from the music room or laughter from the playground still resonate at Wellow. Today’s Wellow child is happy, confident and articulate, safe in the knowledge they have a head start to a bright future. With small class sizes, high academic standards and a wealth of activities – including tennis, cricket, archery, swimming in the school’s own 20m pool, boarding sleepover events and a host of musical and artistic opportunities – our boys and girls aged between 3 and 13 years simply

Wellow House has always enjoyed a family atmosphere – something we are continuing to celebrate in style on Tuesday 20th June with our Grandparents and New Parents’ Day. Extended family or friends, who play such an increasingly important role in children’s lives, are warmly invited to join in an afternoon of activities from 2.00pm in the Pre-Prep department. The Pre-Prep facility is available for children from 3 years, so please do feel free to come along and see the nurturing, caring environment we offer.

Join us at our next Open Morning on Thursday 15th June from 9.30-11.30am, and see what Wellow House can offer your child. Sherwood Forest Community Church As I was watching the “One Show” on television on the 17th February this year, they were talking about the day being the “Random acts of kindness day”. I had never heard of this before and started to listen intently to what was being said. The Random acts of kindness foundation is a non profit organisation that believes in spreading kindness throughout schools, communities and homes. Their motto is “We believe in the power of kindness to change the way people see and experience the world.” Aesop said “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”. I’m sure we would all agree with that!

I immediately got a bunch of flowers and took them round to one of my neighbours (who hadn’t heard of it either!) She very kindly made me a cup of tea and we spent a lovely hour talking together about what a good idea it was. I must admit to feeling a little bit miffed at not knowing it was this ‘special day” earlier as I could have done lots more “Random acts of kindness” throughout the day.

life that is truly life.” (1 Timothy 6:18) God, is rich in love and generous towards us every day of our lives, and as we look to Him, He gives us the grace to have that same generosity resulting in acts of love and kindness in all sorts of lovely ways, so let today, and every other day be a random act of kindness day. Be blessed.

But do we really need a “special day” to prompt us to be thoughtful and generous? In The Message version of the Bible it tells us to “do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If we do that, we’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining

nightmares and sleepwalking. Chances are, you are one of the 79% of respondents who has experienced one or two of these in their time. So what can be done to avoid such nocturnal pitfalls? Well, according to sleep expert Dr. Nerina Ramlakhan, some pretty easy steps should begin erasing those big black circles without the need for cosmetics. First, consider restricting caffeine intake so that you only drink tea, coffee or other pick-me-ups before 2pm. Then make sure you're switching off properly before bed — so no computers or smartphones for at least one hour in the run-up to calling it a night.

Instead read, or watch something relaxing on the box. It’s also imperative that if you need to organise things for the next day, you do so prior to your relaxation time. Make a physical checklist of what needs to be done around the house or when you get to the office tomorrow, then descend onto the couch and it should be far less likely you’ll spend the night thinking about getting those tasks ticked off. And, finally, if you are having trouble getting off after hitting the hay then under no circumstances should you check the time — this will only compound the situation by making you worry about lost sleep.

and supporting people to improve their own health and wellbeing.

Sleep in a time-starved world WE’RE all in the same position these days. You’re juggling kids and career, career and breakneck-speed social life, or all three. It doesn’t leave much room for anything else. From night-time meetings to midnight feeds with baby and 1am feasts with friends after a Friday in the bar, it’s safe to say that on the whole Britain is staying up later and getting less rest the more we adopt the 24/7 mentality. Even in regional cities such as Manchester and Leeds it’s now possible to party right through until the first train to anywhere on a Sunday morning, and as the world adapts to the whole globalisation thing, there’s no doubt people will increasingly burn the candle at both ends, professionally. The problem is, none of this is going to do us much good in either the health or looks department. Indeed, it’s often said that the best remedy for a multitude of ailments, from bags under the eyes to stress, is a good night's rest. But have you ever stopped to think about whether or not you're taking the right steps to ensure that your sleep pattern is helping you look and feel ravishing, no matter what the situation? According to research done on behalf of one of Britain’s biggest bed manufacturers, Silentnight, 19% of Britons took a day off in 2012 as a result of sleep-deprivation, with a total cost to the economy of £600million, and women are far more prone to suffering than men. Common issues include problems dropping off, problems staying asleep, poor quality of sleep, too much sleep,

Laura sells books I’m Laura, your local Independent Usborne Organiser, promoting literacy at home and school. Being an Independent organiser earns me an additional income around my family, paying for extra family treats, holidays and my children’s hobbies. One of the many perks of being an organiser is that I get FREE and discounted books for my own children, Leo 4 and Lily 11 months, they both adore books and our family collection is ever increasing. One of our most recent additions to the family bookcase is How Big is a Million by Anna Milbourne and Serena Riglietti (£10.99 – hardback edition). This book is a great story to help children visualise just how big a million is, with the lovely little penguin Pipkin. As he starts his journey looking for a million he finds 10 fish, 100 penguins, 1000 snowflakes and finally answers his question of how big a million is with a 1x1.5m poster of one million stars. Leo loves to count as we read through the story, he enjoys counting the fish and the penguins although to date we’ve skipped counting the snowflakes and the stars thankfully! It’s a great story for parents to read to young children and as children get older they can read it independently. When asked about the story at the end Leo said ‘Wow, is that really a million stars, that’s a lot isn’t it’.

Pipkin helps children answer other big questions through stories with 2 additional books ‘How High is the Sky?’ and ‘Where do baby animals come from?’. Usborne offers over 2500 titles with books for babies all the way through to young adults. Books include fiction/non-fiction, a large range of educational books as well as many activity books. You can order How Big is a Million? or any other book directly from me with free local delivery. Host an Usborne Book party at your home and you could receive a free book, invite your friends and family and you’ll get to view a selection of books and browse the full catalogue with free local delivery. I also offer sponsored reading and listening events to schools and nurseries, raising funds to purchase new Usborne books to expand their current reading resources. Schools and nurseries can receive up to 60% extra in free books, all without the school or nursery touching their budget. If you’d like to find out more about becoming an Independent Usborne Organiser, get in touch and I’ll happily provide further information. Make it nice or do it twice Well I am a local lad born and breed, my first School years were spent at Oak Tree Lane first School, and then I went to Wind Mill Ridge quickly followed by Sherwood Hall Upper School. At Sherwood Hall Upper School I was among only a few boys who did Cooking as a subject (so yes, I did get all the jokes about cooking) My next few years were spent at West Notts College on Derby Road. When I left there I moved away from Mansfield and work in a lovely hotel in Bamford called The Rising Sun. This was then followed by seven years working for the Hilton hotel chain. One of my highlights working with them was go down to London and working for Head Chef

at Wembley Hilton during Euro 96. I then moved back to Mansfield to help open up Thorsbey Hall Hotel and Spa. I spent four years working there and one of the best days was when I won Warner’s Master Chef 2001. Following this a spent a year working at The Toll House Restaurant in Gunthorpe, I then went back in the hotel Trade spending a number of years working Marriott Hotels and then Q Hotels. Then I went and worked for a restaurant chain called Loch Fyne, then off to Twin Oaks Hotel, whilst working here I heard Watko from Mansfield 103.2 asking for a Resident Chef to fill in a spot called Tasty Tuesday. I enjoyed this experience live on-air.

I then join Full Circle Catering as a relief Chef and after a number of months I was asked to join them in the office as a Catering Consultant. Happy cooking and just remember my saying: Make it nice or do it twice.

As a young lad from Mansfield I would often go into Mansfield on a Saturday morning with my Mum and younger Sister to do the fresh food shop, while my Dad was busy working down Sherwood Colliery.

Young man can you manage that bag is what Keith would say to me. See you next week Mrs. French

The Bakers (Moons) would be our next stop as a Child the only thing I can really remember is how good the cakes looked and how nice it smelt in there. With all the shopping done, we would make our way up Woodhouse Road to meet my Dad after work. How things have changed over the last 30 years!

How things have changed since my childhood I can remember going to see Keith Reed on the market for our fruit and vegetables. It was always 4 or 5 people deep waiting to be served. Looking up and pass the plastic green grass waiting to be served, everything looked fresh and smelt so good. No matter who served my Mum, they always began with the same question. “Good morning Mrs. French how are you today?” My mum would then pass over her bag “See you at the end Mrs. French.” A gentleman would then come over ruffle my hair, give me and my sister an apple each followed with “How’s Mrs.T doing? (That would be what he called my Grandma, the lady who walked into town every day for fresh food).

Next stop would be Birds Butchers, yet again 4 or 5 people deep waiting to be served. The floor always had saw dust on it. A very precise order was always placed. Four slices of this, four slices of that, 2lb of Pork Sausage, 2lb Smoked bacon and something called Pork dripping! My look of amazement of something that looked like a meat trifle, I learnt in later life that it was the best thing to do Roast Potatoes in. The indoor market would be next. My Mum would always ask for “Wet Fish!” I thought that all the fish was wet, my litter sister would always say the same thing when we went into the Indoor market “Oh Mum it stinks!”

HAVING successfully avoided relegation at the end of season 2016-17, Rainworth Miners’ Welfare will begin their 2017-18 campaign once again in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

But they will do so with a new management team at the helm after parting company with Julian Watts and Ady Smith following their final match of the old season. The Wrens ensured their safety in their penultimate match with a 2-1 victory at Garforth Town, where they produced one of their best performances of the season and, with a little more luck in front of goal, would have had the points comfortably in their pockets by half time. That win took the pressure of the final game of the season against Hemsworth, but despite taking the lead in that game they ended up losing 2-1. Having parted company with the management team the club acted quickly to bring in as their new boss 30-year-old Craig Denton, who was assistant manager at Worksop Town last season – and Denton began work immediately to start building a squad which he hopes, despite extra financial constraints, will improve on the disappointments of what has been a difficult year for the club both on and off the field. Chairman Les Lee said: “We must thank Julian and Ady for their efforts over the past two seasons – we part as friends and they will always be welcome through our gates.

“We drew up a blueprint of the kind of manager we wanted to bring in, and Craig ticks all the boxes. He’s been assistant manager, he’s coached, he has contacts with several professional clubs and he’s happy to work with a reduced playing budget.

they want to achieve. It felt as if the club would give me what I wanted, as much as what I want to bring to Rainworth. “For me it was a mutual thing, and it’s now about getting Rainworth winning games and bidding for a much higher finishing place.” The Wrens have arranged a number of pre-season friendlies, including Chesterfield and Mansfield Town, to prepare for their new campaign, as follows: JULY: Tue 11th 7pm Sherwood Colliery (h); Fri 14th 7.30pm Ollerton Town (a); Tue 18th 7.30pm Dronfield Town (h); Sat 22nd 3pm Chesterfield (h); Tue 25th 7pm Spalding United (h); Sat 29th 3pm Lincoln United (h). AUGUST: Tue 1st 7.30pm Mansfield Town (h).

Denton, who will bring with him Rob Poulter as his assistant, enthused: “I decided it was time to give management a go. In the past people have judged me on someone else’s players, but I wanted the chance to have my own backroom staff, and having met Les and some of the officials at Rainworth I had the overwhelming conviction that this was the right job for me. “I’ve looked around the club, they have excellent facilities which helps attract players, they know and I know what
