(Continued from page one) which was pioneered by The National Autistic Society. Its aim is to increase awareness of the range of conditions that fall under the autism spectrum. Approximately 700,000 people in the UK are on the spectrum, which includes similar conditions like Asperger’s. In addition to the work of charities like the autistic society, several programmes have helped to raise awareness too, such as the BBC’s The A Word and Netflix’s Atypical. “It is reassuring to see the increasing number of books, films, and TV shows that sensitively address autism,” said K.L. Loveley. “I conducted thorough research about Asperger’s and used my medical experience and knowledge to sensitively write about this important topic. “My novel delves deep into the condition and explores the psychological angst of both parent and child, from birth to adulthood.” K.L. Sleeping out to help the homeless MANY people joined an annual awareness and fundraising event to help highlight the problem of homelessness in Mansfield.
The Big Snore, sponsored by Nottingham Building Society, was held at Vision West Nottinghamshire College. It raised money for homelessness charity Framework as participants slept out for the night in cardboard box shelters. The event began in 2004 thanks to the
efforts of St Mark’s Church, Mansfield, and has continued since. All money raised went to tackle the problem of homelessness locally. Among those taking part was the town’s MP, Ben Bradley, together with members of his office team. Their JustGiving fundraising page — www.justgiving.com/fund raising/ben-bradleymp — set up for the cause currently stands at more than £500. Ben said: “We have raised awareness for MANSFIELD MP Ben Bradley and his office team joined the sleepout. the issue in Mansfield, as well as raising a lot of money that will go straight to Framework. “The Big Snore is a really good way of getting people involved and raising the profile of the issue. “It was positive to see so many people and groups joining in with the sleepout, such as Scouts and the college. “I want to thank all the organisers of the event. “I have worked closely with Framework, they are a genuinely good charity.

THE old school building in Chanda (left) which has been replaced by the new strcture, pictured avove taking shape.
Woodhouse shop’s role in Africa project A CHARITY based in Mansfield has completed a project to build a new school in a poor African country.
Representatives from The Peaceful (Uhuru) Trust plan to travel to Zambia later this year to officially open the school with Esther Lunga, the wife of the country’s president. The trust, which runs charity shops in Mansfield, Mansfield Woodhouse, Sutton and Nottingham, launched the project after visiting the Mwape district in the Luangwa Valley in 2016. Work started on the new school in Chanda in June last year and it is now ready to cater for 120 youngsters. “The school they had was nothing more than what we would perceive as a carport structure,” said one of the trust’s trustees, Charlene Burton-Betts. “After our visit in 2016 we discussed where we could help the most. “The majority of other villages had plans for improvements, but this one didn’t have anything speak of, so we thought it logical to help. “We feel education is the most important ingredient in a child’s future, and that every child should have a basic right to education. “Who knows what some of the children in Chanda could achieve in the future. The possibilities with a good education are endless. “It’s a massive achievement for our charity, and we are very proud of what we have accomplished with some help from others in the Mansfield area.” The Peaceful Trust’s shops sell clothes, shoes, furniture and other household goods, helping to raise money for worthwhile projects in the UK and in some of the
world’s poorest regions, particularly within Africa and Asia. Help for the Zambian project was provided by the Mansfield-based National Police Aid Convoys, which donated furniture, equipment, stationery, uniforms and school bags. They filled a container that is on its way to the Luangwa Valley and should arrive in May. West Nottinghamshire College, Mansfield, is organisng a collection of pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners and pencil cases for the school.
The charity hopes to have enough items for each pupil to have their own uniform, school bag and pencil case full of basic items. l ABOVE: Charlene Burton-Betts (right), a trustee of The Peaceful Trust, with David Scott, chairman of the National Police Aid Convoys, and Co Coun Joyce Bosnjak, of Nottinghamshire County Council, pack the container that is transporting items to Zambia for the school.

Jump into fundraising at Woodhouse business i-Jump Trampoline Park, in Mansfield Woodhouse, has launched a new initiative, Jump and Raise, which gives would-be fundraisers exclusive access to the park and a percentage of the entry fee to their cause.
Since opening in December 2016, i-Jump on Old Mill Lane Industrial Estate, has supported more than 150 charities and
projects in the area, providing raffle prizes and attending events. Operations manager Steph Grayson said “We are committed to giving back to the local community, so it’s great to be able to offer something like Jump and Raise in Mansfield. “It’s a very unique combination of fun, fitness and fundraising.” She said i-Jump managed all the
bookings and collected the cash to minimise work for event organisers. At the end of each event, i-Jump will donate up to £5 per jumper to the chosen cause. Steph said fundraising slots were available on specific evenings, on a first-come first-served basis, for any fundraising organisations that were able to promote their cause to a minimum of 40 participants.
County search for community heroes NOTTINGHAMSHIRE County Council has launched a search for community heroes and heroines — and wants to hear from the public about suggestions for people to receive a regular new award.
Nottinghamshire Community Heroes is seeking nominations for people who go the extra mile for a neighbour, an organisation or a local community. Council chairman Coun John Handley will meet the person who is named as a Nottinghamshire Community Hero and
will present them with an award for their achievements. The awards will take place on a regular basis. Coun Handley said: “In my role as chairman, I meet many, many people who are unsung heroes in their local community or neighbourhood, undertaking selfless acts to benefit others. The aim of this award, in Robin Hood county, is to recognise some of these people to celebrate their contribution to helping make Nottinghamshire a great place to live. “Nominations can come from anyone who wants to highlight the achievements
of another person who lives in Nottinghamshire and works or volunteers within the county.” Ideas for nominees include those who help vulnerable people, or support young people or volunteer for a good cause. The chairman of the council will select the people who they believe deserves a special thank you.
To nominate someone, go to www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ nottscommunityheroes or #nottsheroes on Twitter.

MANSFIELD MP Ben Bradley played in a charity football match in Forest Town to help raise funds for charity.
The Frenbot match was organised by Mansfield residents Craig French and Russell Talbot in aid of The National Autistic Society. So far, the event has raised more than £3,000 from ticket sales, raffles and auctions on the day. Craig and Russell, who both work for Full Circle Catering / Full Circle Jobs, said: “A massive thank you to all the companies and individuals that supported us in making the day such a success. “It was a great event, enthused with community spirit.” The highlight auction item was won by Steven Edwards, who will watch a Manchester United match from an executive box. Discussing the MP’s involvement in the match at Forest Town Arena, Craig and Russell said: “It was good having Ben there playing with us. “He just got stuck in and was one of the lads. When he said he would play for us a few months ago, he didn’t back out — and he didn’t back down on the pitch either.” Ben said: “There were a lot of people supporting the match and it was a good, positive atmosphere. “It was good to get my boots back on, get out on the pitch and get stuck in to the game.” Craig said they were “just two local lads trying to make a bit of a difference.” “We couldn’t have done it without the

VOLUNTEERS take part in the big clean-up day in Mansfield Woodhouse last year.
Sign up for big clean-up PEOPLE, schools, businesses and community organisations are being urged to sign up for an annual initiative that helps to make Mansfield a cleaner and greener place.
Organiser Mansfield District Council is seeking help for the sixth International Clean Up Mansfield Day on Friday, 8th June. The event, part of a strategy to make the district a greener and cleaner place to live, work and visit, attracts participants from towns and cities called Mansfield in the USA and Australia. Last year’s clean-up was the biggest yet, attracting more than 60 groups of volunteers who spruced up the district
— and beyond — by picking up litter, painting a park pavilion and town centre benches, planting bulbs and removing gum. In Mansfield Woodhouse they included the 4th Mansfield Woodhouse Scout Group, Friends of Yeoman Hill Park and the Friends of Hornby Plantation. Communities in Mansfield, Texas; Mansfield, Pennsylvania; Mansfield, Minnesota; Mansfield, Massachusetts in the USA; and Mansfield in Victoria, Australia, also took part. Coun Andrew Tristram, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “This is always a very popular event, which brings people from all parts of the community together for a common good cause — to
make Mansfield an even more pleasant place. “Let’s make this year’s clean-up even bigger and better. Come and join us.” People can sign up to take part at www. mansfield.gov.uk/cleanup The latest news is available by liking the International Clean Up Mansfield Day Facebook page, where information and photographs can be shared. Thousands raised at sporting fundraiser A GROUP of businessmen helped raise £3,000 for local sportspeople at an annual fundraiser.
The Armchair Club’s Question Of Sportstyle evening at the 1861 Suite, Mansfield Town FC, featured 18 teams from local companies, including Mansfield Town FC, Linney, John Sankey, NatWest, Hopkins Solicitors, H Martin Waste, Alfreton Insurance, Barclays, Edwinstowe Plumbing, Collins Wealth Management, the NewsJournal, Adkins Sinclair, SP Fabrications, The Mortgage Zone, Tyler Bothers and the Mansfield Christmas Lights team.
Radio presenter Stewart Nicholson compered the fundraiser, which has been held annually since 1999. Money raised will be donated to local sportspeople and sports clubs. The quiz, as always a competitive affair, was won by Collins Wealth Management. Mike Collins and his son, Ben, led the firm and they are pictured, with their team, enjoying the celebration. The Armchair Club was created more than 35 years ago by a small group of Mansfield businessmen to raise much-needed funds for able-bodied and disabled local sportspeople in need of additional financial support.
The unique group has since raised and donated more than £200,000. A spokesman said: “The success has been achieved through the generosity and support of local people attending fundraising events. “The objective of the events is to help the club raise funds to be invested back into the local community to give talented young people an opportunity to grow and develop their own sporting abilities.” Grants are available to young sports people and clubs based in Mansfield or Ashfield area.
