Woodhouse student hits the net with football vlog A FOOTBALL-MAD media production student from Mansfield Woodhouse enjoyed his very own taste of the industry, after starring in a BBC video charting his team’s FA Cup run.
Notts County supporter Declan Weliczko was hand-picked by producers of the BBC Sport website’s FA Cup Stories series to be filmed on the day of the Magpies’ fourth-round tie against Swansea City at Meadow Lane. It came after they spotted the 18-yearold’s self-filmed match-day vlogs on his own YouTube Channel, ARLukomski, where he muses all things Notts and captures fan footage from the terraces. Declan, who attends West Nottinghamshire College, was recorded going about his regular match-day routine for the piece — called Notts County’s New Era. It featured his customary walk to the stadium from Nottingham train station while simultaneously talking about his hopes for the game, along with the club’s turbulent recent history and his optimism for the future under its current regime. He even grabbed an opportunity to have his photograph taken with Football Focus presenter Dan Walker after that week’s edition of the long-running BBC programme was broadcast live from The Broken Wheelbarrow pub, a favourite haunt for Notts fans. Declan’s passionate support for the Magpies was captured from the stands as the game unfolded — ranging from the despair of conceding a goal just before half-time to the ecstasy of salvaging an equaliser after the hour mark, which saw the high-flying League Two outfit finish the game 1-1 to earn a replay against their Premier League opposition. Declan said: “Throughout the day I was accompanied by a video journalist, who filmed me pulling-on my Notts shirt at home and taking the train to Nottingham before recording some bits around the stadium — all while talking about Notts’ past, present and future. “Then we headed inside for the match, where he videoed me and lots of other supporters as things got under way, including my reaction to the goals. “It was a bit surreal because I hadn’t experienced anything like that before, being filmed by the media, but I really enjoyed it. “I’ve received lots of congratulations and positive comments from friends and family, which is quite cool.” Although Declan’s beloved Magpies went on to crash-out of the competition — after being thrashed 8-1 in the return fixture at the Swan’s Liberty Stadium, in South

Wales — he insisted he had an amazing experience overall, with his two-minute 40-second film subsequently featured on the BBC Sport website, YouTube Channel and Facebook page. The teenager — who hopes to pursue a career as a journalist or full-time vlogger — said the experience had further whetted his appetite for the industry. Declan, who studies the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Media Production (Film and TV), added: “This has opened my eyes to different aspects of the media; not just journalism and vlogging but other things too.
“I’ve already tried lots of roles that were new to me, such as camera and sound operator, as part of my college course and this has introduced me to even more jobs in the media. “While it’s disappointing to go out of the FA Cup, especially in the manner we did, it was an amazing experience to work with the BBC and produce a match-day blog that combined my passions for Notts County, film and TV.” Declan’s BBC vlog is on his YouTube channel, ARLukomski.

Woodhouse group at orchard pruning event FOLLOWING the planting of 71 apple trees in the newly-created Pleasley Community Orchard, its friends group invited orchard expert John Starkey, of Starkey’s Fruit Farm, Southwell, to give ideas for making sure the trees will bear fruit for the community.
Following a presentation on how apple trees develop, John showed management techniques necessary to ensure their correct shape and maximise productivity in the future. Volunteers had a go themselves and pruned 22 apple and 15 pear trees. The Friends Of Pleasley Community Orchard invited the community to attend
Andrea said: “It’s important for me to have this tree as a memorial and I have had a plaque inscribed with part of a poem my grandma wrote to granddad while he
was away at war in 1942, about meeting again under a shady tree.” Matt Arnold, chairman of the Pleasley Community Orchard, said: “This was an excellent kick start to the Friends of Pleasley Orchard’s gardening group, which takes place each second Saturday of the month, and we look forward to welcoming others from our local community to dig in and help bring this wonderful place to even more fruition. John Starkey added: “It has been a good and productive day and a pleasure to help such an enthusiastic group to achieve their dream orchard. “Managing the trees properly will provide fruit for many generations to come.”
Send us an electronic copy of photographs with a few details and we will try to publish them in a future edition. In each edition we devote pages to

as well as fellow friends groups from the Friends Of Greenwood Community Forum.
Trees in the orchard were planted as memorials to loved ones. Local resident Andrea Stanforth attended to find out how to best prune her Discovery apple tree — a memorial to her late grandmother Betty Moore. Andrea was keen for sons, Adam, Daniel and Jake and her partner’s son, Daly, to find out how to look after the tree for future generations.

New Miss Mansfield to be crowned at night of inspiration THE current Miss Mansfield and Sherwood Forest, Jessica Pinnick, is staging the final fundraising event of her year in office.
A Night Of Inspiration at the John Fretwell Sporting Complex, Sookholme, on Friday, 23rd March, will raise money for Guide Dogs — the charity Jessica has been supporting for the past 12 months. The next Miss Mansfield and Sherwood Forest will also be crowned at the charity gala and auction. The five finalists are: Nikita Wilson, 18, of New Houghton; Elinore Pheasant, 21, of Rainworth; Lauren King, 18, of Mansfield; Bethany Wigley, 17, of
Mansfield; and Daniella Welch, 18, of Shirebrook.
Inspirational award winners who will be special guests on the night include Paralympian swimmers Ollie Hynd and Charlotte Henshaw, young boxer Nico Leivars and Nathan Edge, the brave Mansfield man who went blind overnight and now raises funds and awareness for Guide Dogs. Nathan, who said his life was transformed when he was given his guide dog, Hudson, has since gone on to play blind football for England. The fundraising event will also include entertainment by Ben Haynes (acoustic
singer), Craig James (illusionist), Jon Pearson (comedian), Pete Jones (musician), the Christine March School of Dance and Paddy Shaw (saxophonist). Jessica said: “I have had the most unbelievable year fundraising for Guide Dogs, supporting local businesses and being an ambassador for the local area. “My final event is a celebration of the talent and inspiration we have in Mansfield and I can’t wait to hand over my crown to the next amazing young woman.” The event starts at 7pm. Tickets, priced £30, are available from Jessica Pinnick, the venue or Superstar Speakers Mansfield. Call 07792 039480 for details.

MANSFIELD Museum is continuing to bring NewsJournal readers a selection of its favourite photographs from the ourmansfieldarea website.
It gives the public the opportunity to share information, memories, photos and knowledge about Mansfield and the local communities, both as they are today and how they were in the past. If you are interested in visiting the site, type www.ourmansfieldandarea. org.uk into the address line on your internet browser. This month we thought we would share these fantastic images of Mansfield Station. Mansfield Town Station saw its passenger services finish on 10th October, 1964, when, as a result of the Beeching cuts, services on the former Midland line between Nottingham Midland and Worksop were withdrawn. The line was worked by steam until the end and when the Saturdays-only Nottingham to Elmton and Cresswell service left northbound at 10.25pm, it ended 115 years of passenger services. The line through Mansfield remained open for coal traffic, but it took another 31 years to reinstate passenger services when, in November 1995, the second stage of the Robin Hood Line opened. It saw services reinstated between Mansfield Woodhouse and Nottingham. The first stage of the line saw services reintroduced between Nottingham and Newstead in May 1993. Services between Worksop and Nottingham finally reappeared in 1998 after an absence of 34 years.

The Life Of A Coalminer On until 2nd June, 2018 THE Life Of A Coalminer is all about the world of the Nottinghamshire coalfield throughout the 20th Century. The exhibition attempts to capture not just the rigours and dangers of life at the coal-face, but also something of the flavour of the closelyknit communities whose lives revolved around the pit.
Mansfield Society Of Artists’ Annual Exhibition 21st April to 26th May The Museum Of The Mercian Regiment On Tour 9th June to 24th November The Museum Of The Mercian Regiment (WFR Collection) will be hosting an exhibition to commemorate the end of the first world war. The museum is normally located within Nottingham Castle. The exhibition will focus on the impact the end of the war had on Mansfield, and the surrounding areas, as well as on those members of the Sherwood Foresters, and other regiments, who came from Mansfield.
