Mark’s recent litter pick at local park Litter is a growing concern across our area, affecting people’s lives and costing millions to clean up. That’s why I'm delighted at the Government’s new ‘Litter Strategy for England’ which introduces new enforcement powers and makes a commitment to free waste disposal at the local tip. As part of the first national Litter Strategy litter louts could be hit with £150 fines. This will build on measures to better distribute public bins, making it easier to throw away rubbish, and the recommendation that offenders on community sentences help to clear up fly-tipped waste. These plans will make sure we can all enjoy the local environment and it is a clean, healthy place to live and work in. (Continued on page 5)

Scarecrow Festival You will have seen the posters round the village advertising the third Scarecrow Festival on 1st May. The Local History Society's offering this year is to be in the guise of Farnsfield's own explorer of Australia, Augustus Gregory, so look out for him on the Main Street, at Long Acre. Once again we shall be in charge of the Bottle Stall on the field so we should be most grateful if members would contribute a bottle or two for this event and we shall also need more bottle gift bags. Please bring them round to Long Acre before 1st May. The bottles don't have to be alcohol but they do go down better with the punt-

ers than, say, ketchup! If you could give up an hour of your time to man the stall it would be much appreciated so let David or Judith know what time between 12.30 and 4.00 you could do. The next meeting will be on 10th May about the Lord Lieutenant and his Deputies, past and present, their roles and duties. Tom Huggon is one of those Deputies. Just a reminder, the annual sub is now £15.00 and visitor's fee £3.00. Wishing you all a Happy Easter. David and Judith Milnes 01623 882454

News & Information Mark’s recent litter pick at park part of clean-up 5
(Continued from Page 1)
The Government’s aim is to be the first generation to leave our environment in a better state than we found it, and tackling litter is an important part of that drive to make the area a better place to live and visit. I’m glad this is something the Government is taking seriously as it’s a growing problem across my whole constituency and the wider area. We should be making it easier for residents to dispose of waste and more bins and a promise to maintain free disposal of your DIY waste are a positive commitment. I’d call on local councils to make use of further enforcement options that are available to tackle fly-tipping and littering. I'm running a project across my constituency to clean up our local areas, whether that's litter picking on the play area or painting the local Scout Hut. I'm looking for residents to put forward ideas and proposals, so do drop me a line on mark.spencer.mp@parliament.uk with your projects.
Rainworth & District U3A A doorway to a RAINWORTH & District U3A met on Wednesday, 11th April at Rainworth Village Hall.
The speaker was Mike Storr who gave a really amusing talk on Masters Of Mirth, during which he showed slides of past comedians, and performed many of their wonderful poems, monologues and jokes, using his considerable acting skills. A collection in lieu of a fee and expenses was made for the Asthma Society, which he supports. The meeting was opened by the vice-chairman, Jackie Hopper, and, as usual, there was a raffle, free refreshments, book stall and the very busy tables where a good attendance of members were signing up for the various forthcoming events, outings, meals, quizzes etc. There were summer events, a river cruise with hot meal and drinks, a U3A Prom Night in June and another visit to the Hostess for an event entitled The Wedding, to be signed up for and participated in.
Subs were collected — still only £20 for a full year’s membership, what a bargain! Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, 10th May, in the Village Hall at 10am, when the speaker will be Ian Morgan on The Curious World Of Olde Tyme Punishments. Check out our website — www.rainworth-u3a.org.uk/ There are no strangers here, just friends you have yet to meet. Call Jill 01623 400545.

Security & Safety The undercover dangers of spyware programmes Send your news and photos to chloe@news-journal.co.uk
CONSUMER experts urge online shoppers to protect their personal information and limit the risk of identity fraud and unauthorised transactions by shopping wisely with trustworthy online retailers.
Not all online shoppers, however, adequately protect themselves from spyware, which can be installed on your computer without your knowledge and without detection. Spyware has become a big problem for internet users, especially those who shop online with credit and debit cards. These illegal programmes can remotely monitor your online use and hijack your browser, redirecting your internet usage to third parties. At their least damaging, they can slow up your computer, but at their worst they can record your keystrokes, scan your hard drive and change your system's settings, allowing identity thieves
to access your personal details, including your card details. The main problem is that it can be installed entirely without your knowledge, sometimes through free programmes
downloaded from the internet or through file-sharing websites. So those who use the internet to shop or download leave themselves exposed to the danger of spyware. Pop-ups are one way to discover whether you have spyware installed on your computer. If you have ever had a pop-up without a browser loaded, you have spyware of some sort. There are many types of spyware and some more worrying than others. Adware is software that displays pop-up ads and has the capability to track your surfing habits and sell that information to a third party. Malware, also known as malicious software, has the ability to damage your computer. A Trojan horse, like its historical namesake, appears to be useful, but its purpose is to cause damage to your computer or compromise your confidential information. However, the most dangerous items of spyware are keyboard loggers and internet dialers. Keyboard loggers can record your keystrokes, such as your PIN number, passwords and other confidential information. Internet dialers can use your computer to dial long distance numbers, usually for adult chat line services overseas. These programmes can install themselves through a virus, MP3 files or visiting some pornography sites. Victims won't realise until a hefty phone bill arrives, often costing hundreds of pounds. Pretty scary stuff. Thankfully, there are measures you can take to ensure that you can safely shop online or download. Read the licence agreement before installing free software. If you tick that you've read the terms and conditions when you haven't, you may unintentionally provide authorisation to have your online habits monitored for marketing purposes. This is unlikely to install the most dangerous spyware, but it can slow your
7
computer with adware. File sharing is a well-known way of installing spyware, so find out if there's other software packaged with the freeware. Avoid clicking on any links in e-mail or in pop-up ads offering anything for free. By doing so, you are openly inviting the most damaging spyware to be installed. Install anti-spyware software and keep it regularly updated. Treat the spyware threat as seriously as you treat the threat of viruses. You can buy all-in-one protection programmes against spyware, viruses and phishing and there are even reputable free security packages that can be downloaded.

Swim in your own back garden IF someone told you they had a swimming pool in their back garden, then your immediate thought might well be that they must be rich.
Let's face it, we're not living in Australia, where a pool in the garden is about as normal as grass on the lawn. This is Britain. Only the wealthy have swimming pools, don't they? Well maybe not. You may be surprised to hear that it can cost as little as £3,000 to have your very own pool and the advantages of doing so could stay with you for years to come. Tom Holman, managing director of Fowler Swimming Pools, explains why sale sat his company are booming. “Swimming pools are now seen as a way to keep the family fit with great exercise in your own surroundings,” he says. “Children love them and adults enjoy entertaining their friends at the poolside with barbecues and evening drinks. “Even the weather doesn't have to be a problem now because we can create covered pool areas for all-year-round use. “With an estimated 6,000 pools built each year in the UK, the industry has never looked so buoyant — no pun intended. “Modern pool construction methods have slashed both the time it takes to build a swimming pool and the cost,” says Richard Carrington, chairman of Spata (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association), the trade body for the UK swimming pool industry. If you fancy your own private pool then the options have never been better. The choice kicks off with above-ground models for the budget-conscious starting at about £3,000 and ranges up to fully tiled, reinforced concrete pools costing from £35,000. Holman has some words of warning before you take the plunge though. “By choosing a Spata-registered supplier or contractor, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that you are dealing with a reputable company with the necessary experience, expertise and back-up, should you encounter any problems,” he says. Fowler Swimming Pools advises those considering a pool to set a budget and think carefully about who is going to use it, how it will be used and when. Think carefully about the size and location of the new pool and the possibility of extending its use all year round with an enclosure. Although this will obviously add to the cost, the benefits in terms of use could be huge. There are numerous types of pools to choose from, including the following. A fully tiled, reinforced concrete pool takes the title of top of the range when it comes to home pool options. Usually finished with tiles or mosaics, concrete pools can be as glamorous and elaborative as you like, with prices starting at about £35,000. While this may seem a lot of money initially, many such pools will last up to 30 years, which actually makes them great
MAKE a splash this summer with your very own pool. Photo: Fowler Swimming Pools of West Sussex value in the long term. For those looking for a mid-priced investment, a panel and liner pool offers a realistic alternative, with prices starting at about £20,000. Taking about a month to install, liners will need replacing every 10 years or so and come in a variety of colours and patterns, including very convincing mock tiling or mosaics. A quick-fix alternative, and gaining in popularity all the time, is the one-piece pool that can be up and running within about two weeks and will cost upwards of £15,000. These are available as fibreglass or ceramic all-in-one moulds and are simply lowered into a pre-prepared hole. They use the same technology as that used by builders of luxury motor cruisers and can be fitted with all the necessary equipment, such as skimmers, drain, inlets, pump filter and lights, before they are even delivered. The complete structure is craned into position and lowered onto a pre-prepared excavation with a crushed gravel base. Once all the pre-assembled pipe-work is connected, a concrete surround collar is fitted and coping or paving stones are put in place. Then it is ready for use. Whatever type of pool you decide to have, make sure you've done your homework. Holman says: “Talk to a pool builder about the options and talk to former clients who have dealt with the pool company.” Spata is the industry watchdog and it is worth ensuring the company you deal with is a member. It offers a warranty scheme that guarantees the work of its members and a mediation service in the unlikely event of anything going wrong.
But the big question on many people's lips will be: will a swimming pool add value to the property? It's a tricky question to answer. In some cases, yes, particularly if the property is improved by the addition. But never assume that a £50,000 pool will add the same amount to a property price. And it's worth remembering that a poorly-designed and constructed pool will do nothing to a house price. "It could even hamper a house sale," says Holman. "It pays to go for the best that can be afforded and to use a reliable company with an excellent reputation.

HEALTHY eating is essential for overall good health, but do you know the best foods to include in your meals, and those best avoided?
Let’s take a look at some facts, to help you make realistic and informed choices. Your body needs energy to function normally and keep you alive. You get this energy from nutrients in the food that you eat - mostly, carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Minerals and vitamins are other nutrients that are also important in your diet to help your body stay healthy. It is important to get the right balance between these different nutrients to get maximum health benefits. Your daily eating plan should contain food from each of the following food groups: •Starchy foods such as bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, etc. •Fruit, vegetables and salad •Milk and dairy foods •Protein foods. These include meat, fish, eggs, nuts, tofu, pulses etc. As a general rule, starchy foods and fruit and vegetables should provide the bulk of most of your meals. About one third of what you eat should be made up from starchy foods and about one third from fruit and vegetables. The remaining one third of your ideal food plan should be made up from milk and dairy foods and protein foods. In addition, plenty of fibre and water in your diet is also important for your health. Eating healthily can also help to prevent
certain serious diseases such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes and may also help to reduce your risk of developing some cancers. If you become sick, following a eating a healthy eating plan can help you to recover more quickly. Also, a main way of preventing obesity and overweight is to eat a healthy and varied diet. If you are overweight or obese, eating a healthy diet can help you lose weight but it is important to limit the amount of foods and drinks that are high in fat or sugar. These foods are high in calories and low in nutrients. You may be eating very healthy foods but you still need to keep an eye on your portion sizes because if they are too large,
you will still gain weight. You could change your plate size for a smaller one – that way you will automatically serve up smaller portions. Do not feel that you always have to clear your plate, filling yourself with food your body doesn’t need is only going to cause you to put on weight on because the excessive food gets stored as fat. If you need help with your weight contact Margaret Turner who has specialized in weight management for the past 10 years. Margaret Turner is a clinical and cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist based in Sutton-in-Ashfield and at the Rosegarth Clinic for Alternative Therapies Phone today for more details or to make an appointment 01623 556234.
Fear — It is quite normal to experience fear when you are in a dangerous situation. It is a human response. When you feel fear it activates the automatic ‘fight or flight’ response which makes our bodies and minds alert and ready for action. We are therefore able to respond quickly to protect ourselves by either running away or staying to deal with the problem. Phobia – Fears become phobias when the threat is greatly exaggerated or nonexistent. For example, it is only natural to be afraid of a poisonous snake if you are in the jungle, but it is irrational to be terrified of a photograph of a snake in a book or on TV and if that happens it is probably caused by a snake phobia. When people are afraid or anxious they experience a variety of uncomfortable physical symptoms, such as a racing heart, panic and a suffocating or trapped feeling. These physical
sensations can be frightening themselves—and a large part of what makes a phobia so distressing. When it comes to treating fears and phobias, therapy is very effective. We use a number of different techniques in our practice and have found over the years that hypnotherapy coupled with EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) helps the client to combat both fears and phobias within one to four sessions. We also teach our clients relaxation techniques and breathing exercises which are all powerful antidotes to fears and anxious feelings. If you know anyone who may benefit from our treatments and you would like to know more please call me on 01623 556234.
Suffering from a fear or phobia?
MANY people have an irrational fear or two – fear of spiders for example, or visiting the dentist. For most people, these fears are minor but, when fears become so severe that they cause tremendous anxiety and interfere with your normal life, they’re called phobias. The good news is that phobias can be both managed and cured permanently and therapy can help anyone to overcome their fears and start enjoying life again. These are just a few of the type of fears people have: Fear of flying Fear of public speaking Fear of heights Fear of closed in spaces Fear of spiders Fear of snakes Fear of bridges Fear of needles and injections

Spring & Summer Fashion In the last month’s article I had written about London Fashion Week Festival and trends for the Spring/ Summer season. I kept a watch on the latest trends after the event and took note of ladies styled themselves. So on this occasion, I am going to share with you my thoughts on the style clicks I took. This pic shows how you wear a layer on top of an under-layer to get a glam look. You can create this look by buying a seethrough dress and wear a slip underneath.
The lady on the left has shown brilliant way of dressing up a pair of summer casuals for the event to create a glamorous look. You can also create a look with the denim shorts by wearing an A-Line mesh top and
slip. Goes to show you don’t have to break the bank to look fabulous! Embroidery is also in trend this season. The roses looked amazing on this dress and guess what, they are machine embroidered! You can get the same look from River Island. Cream mesh floral machine embroidered dress £35. Until next time – enjoy the spring season! Tarannum Shad
Give your wardrobe a spring clean
pile. 2. Hang with Pride Once you have de-cluttered, the next step is reorganising. It's important to make the most of the space within your wardrobe and never overfill - you don't have to hang everything.
As the evenings get longer, our thoughts turn to spring being the traditional time for embarking on a thorough clean-up - both inside and outside the home. But dig a little deeper and you might be surprised to discover the real cost of closing the cupboard through the winter months with a half-hearted pledge to sort it out later: the hidden piles of clothes from seasons gone by. Despite having wardrobes filled with the latest fashions, 40% of people claim to be bored with their togs and only three per cent say they feel excited about choosing a different outfit each day. A third also admit to wearing only 10% of their outfits, resulting in a shameful £1,090 worth of clothes left hanging on the rails, untouched, unloved and unwanted. Almost half of the nation - 45% - describes the state of their wardrobe as 'unorganised chaos' and nearly a quarter admit to grabbing the first thing that comes to hand each morning with 23% saying they wear the same old trusted outfits over and over again. But a simple furniture reorganisation could be the key to rediscovering our clothing caches without splashing out yet more dosh on designer creations. Bedrooms expert Pippa Swain says: "Our research shows that despite having a wealth of outfits to choose from, Brits are often left feeling frustrated and uninspired by the contents of their wardrobes.
3. You Are Your Canvas Making a great outfit is like painting - using colour and texture to create something interesting. If you know instantly where to reach in and grab those little extras like accessories, then your look becomes your own unique creation. Drawers and dividers are not only amazing space savers but they help you stay organised with separate spots for belts, scarves and tights. "Instead of buying new clothes, money-savvy Brits should invest in storage solutions that help rediscover the items they once loved." Celebrity stylist Grace Woodward has teamed up with IKEA to give hoarders some top tips on how to tame their wardrobes: 1. Clarity is Key Clear out your wardrobe every year for the coming season: if it doesn't fit or can't be worked into an outfit, then get rid of it. Put the things you simply can't bear to part with in a box and if you haven't missed them in four weeks, put them in the charity
4. Kick Off Shoe racks and boxes are the key to footloose and fancy free self-expression - and a must for good shoe care too. Boxes with clear fronts help keep dust away and make it easy to choose the right pair for your outfit. Grace advises: "Just as you have many different roles to play in a day, so does your wardrobe. It needs to organise your clothes, hang them properly, show off your best bits and keep all those things you'd rather forget cleverly hidden away. A good wardrobe fitted properly with clever de-cluttering solutions can transform your clothes from shabby to chic in no time."

Aunty Mavis and the Woollilots adventure
AUNTY Mavis was tidying her garden and digging up weeds. It was a lovely day with a blue sky and and lots of sunshine. The Woollilots were enjoying themselves by helping as usual. “I really appreciate your help,” declared Aunty Mavis. “We like helping,” chorused the Woollilots. Aunty Mavis smiled but deep down she had a worry. “What’s wrong Aunty Mavis?” asked Little Angel. She knew really because angels know everything. “It’s my friend,” replied Aunty Mavis.
“She’s not happy and I don’t know how to cheer her up.” “Don’t worry,” said Little Angel, everyone has a Fed-up Day now and again.” “I suppose so,” said Aunty Mavis, “but there must be something I can do.” The very next day Aunty Mavis went to visit her friend. She told jokes and and pulled funny faces to make her friend laugh but it was no good... her friend didn’t laugh. The next day was the same and the day after that.
“I wish my friend would feel better,” whispered Aunty Mavis. Suddenly a butterfly appeared and landed on Aunty Mavis’ shoulder. “Your wish is being granted,” the butterfly seemed to say... and then it darted away. It took two more days for the wish to come true but it did! “Thank you for being a good listener,” said Aunty Mavis’ friend’ “I feel so much better...” ........... more to follow next time! © Christine Michael
D.A.R.E. to say Aloha! MY name is Molly Rooth Corder, I am a 15-year-old Joseph Whitaker student and live in Ravenshead. This January I was given an amazing opportunity, I had the chance, along with a few other schools in the district, to write 500 words about myself that would lead to me becoming the Youth Ambassador for Life Skills Education CIC for the UK. The position is part of the D.A.R.E. America Youth Advocacy Board, a board of 50 young people, from around America, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom, who come together to help give a young person’s view on how to improve D.A.R.E’s programmes across the world and advocate for Life Skills Education/D.A.R.E. America in their given state/country. Lifeskills aim to develop and deliver a range of resources to help children and young people develop the skills they need to live safe healthy and productive lives, in a world where they face constant challenges. Some of the thing the programmes cover include bullying, misuse of alcohol and drugs, social media, risk and consequences and decision making. Lifeskills programmes are delivered to 10,000 young people every year and since 1994, 360,000 children have graduated through the lifeskills programmes. The aim is to increase this number, helping more people to make healthier and safer decisions. As a part of my position I jetted off to Hawaii in mid-March, where I had a fantastic time in conferences over three days with all the other YAB members. We learnt how we
could successfully advocate for Life Skills Education/D.A.R.E. in our state/country, and how we could unleash our full potential and truly make a difference. At the end of our trip we were given a project, to perform any kind of advocacy we wished in our state/country to expand the Life Skills Education/D.A.R.E. programmes. I have submitted my ideas, and will soon be beginning a project that will bring a positive impact to young people across the UK. I have also been interviewed on BBC Radio Nottingham. Here is a link to Soundcloud, where you can hear more about what I’m doing — https://soundcloud.com/stubastion/molly-on-notts-radio We will also be hosting a fundraising dinner in November for Life Skills CIC, watch this space for more information
coming soon. You can follow/like my progress on Facebook at Life Skills Education CIC.

Garden bird of the month IF you have a large garden with mature trees you may come across the Chiffchaff but it is not easy to see as it tends to flit amongst the higher branches of trees. It is a small olive-brown warbler about the size of a Blue Tit. It often gets mistaken for the Willow Warbler which is very similar in appearance. There are very subtle differences between the two birds but once the Chiffchaff starts singing, you will not mistake it. It gives out a constant two note ‘chiff chaff’ sound as opposed to the Willow Warbler which has a sweet descending song. If you do get the opportunity to see it, look at the legs. The Chiffchaff has dark legs whilst the Willow Warbler has light coloured legs, but this difference is not easy to see in the field. It comes from the Mediterranean and West Africa and is one of our first summer migrants arriving as early as March. Most years, I have one visit my small garden and it is interesting to watch it pick insects from the leaves of the trees with its sharp pointed bill. It is a very active bird, constantly flicking its tail and wings as it forages for food amongst the foliage. They eat caterpillars and will sometimes take small flies and gnats by catching them in mid-air like a flycatcher.

Photo: Jean Powley I have known this bird to visit my garden as late as October; by then it is then feeding up before it undertakes the long journey south. Listen out for this fascinating bird as there are usually a few about in the village and one may often be heard high up in the trees in the churchyard. Jean Powley

Smash-hit show a worldwide phenomenon
HAVING started in the UK back in 1999, the Sing-a-Long-a Sound Of Music show has now become a worldwide hit, playing to packed houses across the globe. It even fills the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles every year.
And it is coming to Mansfield Palace Theatre — see competition at bottom of the page. Let’s start at the very beginning (a very good place to start)… For those of you not yet converted, Singa-Long-a Sound of Music is a screening of the classic Julie Andrews film musical in glorious, full-screen technicolor, complete with subtitles so that the whole audience can sing along! The fun-filled show starts with a vocal warm-up led by the evening’s host, who also takes the audience through their free interactive props bags, containing various props to be used at strategic points throughout the film. Then, of course, there is the famous fancy-dress competition in which everyone who has come in costume is invited on to the stage to show off their fantastic tailoring skills. Previous entries have included: •Nuns of both genders (including a pregnant nun!) •Girls (and boys!) in white dresses with blue satin sashes •A plumber (as in Christopher ‘Plumber’)! •A lonely Goatherd! •The Hills •Whiskers on kittens •Brown paper packages tied up with string
West End on 13 August 1999 (and has been there ever since). In August 2004, it celebrated its fifth birthday. Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music began its UK tour in January 2000. By the end of 2000 it had played in over 70 UK towns and cities, and it’s still going strong over four years later. Celebrity fans of Sing-a-Long-a Sound Of Music include Carrie Fisher, Jack Dee, Elton John (who had a special private screening for his birthday), Lulu, Janet Street-Porter, Neil Tennant of The Pet Shop Boys, Hugh Grant, Joan Collins, Tessa Dahl, Frank Skinner, Graham Norton and Dan Ackroyd.
So get those vocal chords warmed up, cut up those chintz curtains and hurry down for another dose of the international smash-hit sensation. The audience are the stars, so every show is different. Even if you have been before come and experience it again. If you remember being taken to see the movie when it first came out, wallow in a nostalgia-fest with your children or grandchildren! It’s the perfect night out for family trips, hen parties, office outings or anyone who has ever shed a tear during ‘Edelweiss’! Fancy dress is not obligatory but highly recommended! Check out our website at www.singalon ga.net The story so far… After a festival debut in May 1999, Singa-Long-a Sound of Music began running at the Prince Charles Cinema in London’s

Take a moment to experience the now I WAS once recommended a book to read by Eckhart Tolle, called The Power of Now. It is a book about spiritual reflection written by a Christian but written so that it appeals to those of some faith or no faith. The interesting premise of the book is that as human beings we constantly fail to experience what is happening at this very minute. Our minds are constantly forcing us to focus on what we are going to do or what we have just been doing. Our mind’s focus is either on the past or the future. Even reading this article your attention will be limited as your mind spins off at tangents initiated by what you read or by
something your mind is ruminating on in the background. To be present in the moment, we are told in the book, is to experience the ‘now’ with all our senses. So as you read this feel the quality of the newspaper with your finger tips, the noises that form the backdrop to where you are at present, take in the smell of place, sense the material of the chair on which you are sitting or the floor on which you stand. To be present in the ‘now’ we need to forcibly concentrate our minds. Tolle’s aim is to bring us into an experience that we most possibly never have — the ‘now’. Here is life as it should be lived.
THIS month we’ve been enjoying the Easter break to have some fun. After training we decided to have a go at Sumo football. Zak and Ethan bravely decided to wear the Sumo suits and try to play. Surprisingly they did very well, and everyone had lots of fun. Our under-8s team had a fun training session, culminating in a match versus parents using a giant inflatable football. There was lots of cheating going on (mainly by parents) which ended in a 2-2 draw so the winner was decided on penalties. Well done the under-8s for beating the parents on penalties 1-0. A newly-formed girls’ squad is looking for more players to join. They are being coached by Daniel Colledge, who is one of our junior coaches who will undertake his official training as soon as he turns 16. He is supervised by Phil Colledge, chair-
man of the club and a fully-qualified coach. Coaches or parent assistants are always needed. We will train you if you wish, or just support you for giving us and your child a helping hand. Don’t just watch your child develop through the next 10 years, get involved and enjoy the time with us and them. We are currently recruiting for new players — all ages and abilities are welcomed. Training is currently on Wednesday nights at Rainworth Miners’ Welfare Football Club ground on Kirklington Road at 6pm. Contact Phil Colledge on 07513 954786 for more details. We look forward to welcoming you soon to this fantastic local club.
Rainworth Rangers Football Club news
We cannot change the past and the future is not yet upon us, but the ‘now’ is the place we inhabit each day but a place we seldom truly experience.
To experience God we need to experience him in the Now. Jesus told his disciples not to worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. From Genesis to Revelation God has a plan for our lives but we need to learn to tune in for that plan begins now. Take a moment to experience it, why not do it right Now. Friends of Tippings Wood
Due to inactivity, the Friends of Tippings Wood will close unless any local community members wish to step forward to be on the committee to help drive the group forward. We need a chairman and secretary for the group. If no-one comes forward then the Friends will call a meeting in May to dissolve the group and decide which project should receive any funds. Tippings Wood is a community woodland that lies between Blidworth and Rainworth. The Friends of Tippings Wood acts as the eyes and ears for the landowner, Nottinghamshire County Council’s Green Estate Team, and reports back any anti-social behaviour as well as positive actions and comments from the community. Should anyone wish to become chairman or secretary please email friendsoftippingswood@yahoo.com or contact Mark Guy, Nottinghamshire County Council mark. guy@nottscc.gov.uk or 01623 812355 for further details. Blidworth and District Historical & Heritage Society ON April 4th, the society heard the tale of Inspector Hopkinson's Discovery from a speaker we have heard from many times before, Ian Morgan.
I am pleased to say he did not disappoint. He told the sad and tragic tale of one night's events in 1895. Our members and guests were the jury in this true story of murder that took place in a lodging house in Star Terrace, Mansfield — this was close to today's Commercial Street. Henry Wright, who had been drinking in the Horse and Jockey and the Cross Keys, was seen later in the Police Station, naked except for his socks, covered in blood and with his landlady's grandson in his arms. The boy’s clothes were burning and Henry Wright's wind pipe was partly severed. After putting out the smouldering clothes Inspector Christopher Wright dashed off to Star Terrace to find the house ablaze and inside he discovered the body of landlady Elizabeth Reynolds with her throat cut from ear to ear, covered in blood and disembowelled. The fire brigade who were upstairs fighting the fire, found both of her teenage sons with their throats cut. It was a gruesome discovery. Ian Morgan had done some painstaking research to uncover the details and our ‘jury’ was enthralled by his presentation. Our audience’s opinions are a secret but if you get the chance to hear Ian retell this tale it is highly recommended that you do. After the break, our treasurer Eric Hall talked of his time as a child on the cargo barges with his grandfather, that plied between Gunthorpe on the Trent and
BLIDWORTH Miners’ Welfare built 1933, see photo, hosted the Blidworth Annual Gala until 1989. Many events included the choosing of the village Coal Queen. Guests included some very prominent politicians of the day and on August 14th, 1941, Gracie Fields attended. Hull Docks on the Humber Estuary. Our previous meeting was about this very subject and was therefore most relevant to our audience. Our next three meeting details are: • 2nd May - David Amos - D. H. Lawrence and the Eastwood Connection. •6th June - Howard Healey - History of the Newark Air Museum. •4th July - Kevin Winter - The Battle of Stoke Field. The meetings are in the Function Room of the Blidworth Welfare. Doors are open at 6.45 pm. Ample parking is available. New members are
always welcome, just turn up on the night. There is a small charge on the door of £2 to cover refreshments. We will be showing a selection of our archive of photographs at our meeting in May and also a film on a local aspect of the district’s history. We are pleased to announce that the society's book on Blidworth And World War 1 has been reprinted and will be on sale at future meetings and through our website. We would like to see any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy and add to our extensive archive.
Blidworth Parish Council news The Summer Fair – due to circumstances beyond our control, we have had to change the date from Saturday, 22nd July to Sunday, 30th July. All stallholders have been notified of this change and most have already rebooked. During the evening of Wednesday 29th March the Parish Office was burgled after both the door and frame were smashed. The office was out of bounds to all for a few days as the police fingerprint
staff carried out their duties and the new door and frame were fitted. Our annual pensioners party is on Wednesday, 6th December 2017 in Blidworth Welfare.
Our annual Parish Meeting was on 22nd April in the Methodist Church Hall. The chairman gave his annual report after which questions were answered by your councillors and other organisations. Refreshments will be provided.

FARNSFIELD LOCAL Bilsthorpe Garden Club HISTORY SOCIETY CHAIRMAN Philip Marsh welcomed members to the 15th Annual General Meeting of the society and summarised the events of the last year, the speakers we had and the visits to Bletchley Park and Grimsthorpe Castle as well as Farnsfield Hall. It had been another successful year. The AGM was followed by a quiz and then cheese and wine. There will be no meeting at the village centre in April as members will be visiting the Nottinghamshire Archives Office in the afternoon. We shall be taking part in the village Scarecrow Festival on 1st May as usual and have a bottle stall on the field. Our speaker at the meeting on Wednesday, 10th May will be one of the deputy lord lieutenants of Nottingham Tom HuggonG who will talk about Our Lord Lieutenant And His
Deputies Past And Present, Their Roles And Duties. This will be in the Lower Hall of the Village Centre, New Hill, Farnsfield at 7.30pm. Visitors are most welcome. On 31st May we have organised a coach trip to the National Memorial Arboretum. The cost of this is £12 for members and £14 for non-members. There is an option of a ride on the train around the site for an additional £4.50. We may have a few seats left on the coach if you would like to join us. Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum ON Saturday, March 11th, we were privileged to be invited to participate, with a large display of mining memorabilia, at the Bilsthorpe Miners’ Reunion at our Miners’ Welfare. It was a very well-attended and wonderful evening and we are most grateful to the organiser, Steve Crane, Kenny Zarebski and the team from the Welfare for their hard work and kind assistance, the Reverend Anna Alls for her appropriate words and prayers and, above all, the members of Bilsthorpe’s former mining community, whose generous donations were divided between ourselves and the Beaumond House Community Hospice at Newark. Thank you all. On Wednesday, March 15th, member, Brian Jackson gave a talk on Village Heritage to Bilsthorpe Garden Club, which was well-received. Do come along and support our coffee morning on Saturday, 13th May in the Village Hall, Cross Street from 10am am until 12noon. Admission is 25p, which includes your first drink and biscuit. Stalls will include a grand raffle, tombolas, cake stall, books, jumble, bric-a-
brac and craft and publications. There will also be our popular memory lane photoboard.
AT our meeting on Wednesday, 15th March we heard the sad news of the death of long-standing member, Ida Varty, who, together with her daughterm Sandra, enjoyed many of our club summer holidays. Our thoughts are with Sandra and all the family. Chairman Denis Lewin introduced our speaker, Brian Jackson, from Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum, who gave an interesting and informative talk on Our Village Heritage, after which he answered members’ questions. As a former collier, from a mining family, Brian was particularly able to answer in depth about the industry. He brought a collection of artefacts and a photo-board, which members were pleased to peruse. The raffle was drawn and the first prizewinner was Gillian Hattersley. ON Saturday, 18th March, members and friends enjoyed a coach-trip to the village of Thriplow in Cambridgeshire for their Daffodil Weekend. The whole village opened for charity. There were hosts of daffodils growing everywhere, open gardens, stalls of every kind, food to sample from all around the world and delicious homemade cakes to enjoy with a well-earned cup of tea. There was also entertainment from the Sealed Knot re-enactment group, morris dancing and folk music sessions and a flower festival at the church. Statue in honour of the mining history of Gedling Country Park to be built thanks to £18k funding A GROUP of volunteers have been awarded £18,000 to create a permanent memorial for miners who died on a former colliery site in Gedling.
The Friends of Gedling Country Park has won £18,425 in funding from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Supporting Local Communities Fund to commission an artist to create a permanent piece of art in the new memorial garden at Gedling Country Park. The group applied for money from the county council’s Supporting Local Communities Fund, which provides over £500,000 per year in funding awards to support projects that are beneficial to the local community. With the support of Gedling Borough Council, which manages and maintains the park, an artist will be commissioned by the Friends group to work with local children and community groups to create the centrepiece for the memorial garden. It will commemorate the miners who worked and died on the site and provide a focal point for anyone wishing to spend a few minutes in quiet reflection. Gedling Colliery was the lifeblood of the village and its surrounding areas until it closed in 1991. The site stood derelict for over 20 years before being transformed into a country park in March 2015. The Friends and Gedling Borough Council have been developing the memorial garden within the country park for a number of months and have already installed several large metal ‘rings’ to mark the entrance — these were salvaged from the former colliery, where they were used underground to maintain the stability of the tunnels. The park was awarded Green Flag status in 2016 and a unique mining-themed large children’s adventure play area opened later in the same year. A new visitor centre is also near completio,n making Gedling Country Park one of the top destinations in the county to visit. Coun Peter Barnes, portfolio holder for environment, said: “This is superb news and huge congratulations must go to the Friends Group who are great ambassadors for the country park and have done very well to get this funding. When we turned the former colliery into this brilliant country park, we
always said that the heritage of the site would not be forgotten and these plans for a memorial to remember the miners will go a long way to ensuring that the site’s history is never forgotten.” Terry Lock, chairman of the Friends of Gedling Country Park said: “Our sincere gratitude goes to the councillors and members of the public who have helped us in not only achieving this funding but who have donated their time and money to design and develop this memorial garden. “We will be working closely with both Gedling Borough and the County Council to ensure that we create a fitting
memorial to commemorate all those who gave their lives during the lifetime of the colliery.” Kevin Sharman, Nottinghamshire County Council’s transport, planning and programme development team manager said: “We are delighted to support this project which has had a lot of local support and will be a fitting tribute to the miners who lost their lives while the pit was open. “The memorial will be a welcome addition to the country park and highlights the variety of projects that communities are benefitting from as part of the Supporting Local Communities scheme.”

New Sainsbury’s to open in Colwick after councillors lobby retailer
SAINSBURY’S has confirmed it will be pushing forward with plans to build a new superstore in Colwick after listening to calls from Gedling Borough Council and Vernon Coaker MP to invest in the borough.
Vernon Coaker MP, leader of Gedling Borough Council, Coun John Clarke and chief executive John Robinson have been
pushing for Sainsbury’s to consider the Colwick Industrial site as part of the council’s economic development strategy that includes development of the old industrial site. Coun Clarke said: “This is great news for the borough and we welcome Sainsbury’s decision to invest in Gedling in the coming years. “This news opens other doors to develop the rest of the site which will bring jobs and economic growth to the area. “It just shows that with a bit of tenacity we can get the big employers to listen and take note that Gedling is the place to be if
THOSE members of Farnsfield Local History Society who visited the Nottinghamshire Archives office in April had a most interesting afternoon. The staff took the trouble to look out various documents relating to Farnsfield, including not only old maps, but school records, the diary of a lady who visited the village in the early 19th century, the will of Emily Benson who lived here in the 1500s, school records and cricket club scorebooks. Also we saw a Charter granted by Henry II in about 1155, granting the Burgesses of Nottingham certain rights. There were notes made by Dame Laura Knight in January 1946 when she was attending the Nuremberg Trials as official artist, including a sketch of Goebbels, with a note in the margin saying “Dark hair – dyed?” and that he wore make-up, lipstick. After we had been shown the rooms where the records are stored and told how they are preserved and how they can be accessed by the public, we went into the
conservation room and were shown how some of that was done. While the Archives Office does not have as many visitors coming through the door, with the internet it has far more enquiries by email and it receives about four times as many documents as it used to have deposited (possibly 5,000 a week), many because of the closing down of a company, club or society. Our next meeting in the village centre will be on Wednesday, 10th May when one of the deputy lieutenants of the county, Tom Huggon, will be telling us about Our Lord Lieutenant And His Deputies, Past And Present, Their Roles And Duties. 7.30pm, lower hall. Visitors £3. The coach visit to the National Memorial Arboretum on 31st May leaves the church at 9.30am. We still have a few seats on the coach. £14 for non-members of the society. For more information telephone David and Judith Milnes on 01623 882454.
The retailer contacted Vernon Coaker’s office and the council to say that it wanted to build a new store on the Colwick Industrial Estate by 2020, after carrying out an internal review of the scheme.

you’re looking to grow your business.” Vernon Coaker MP also welcomed the news, saying: “The hard work by Gedling Borough Council has paid off, and Sainsbury’s commitment to the development of the Colwick site is great news — for the whole area, for jobs and for future prosperity. “I am sure it will lead to further investment which we all welcome. “I will continue to do all I can, along with the council, to get this project up and running as soon as we possibly can — and to work on the other projects in the pipeline to ensure they move forward.”

Healthy together for 2017 FIRSTLY this month I want to remind you about possible changes to what medications are not now available to you on prescription.
The Mid Notts NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups are supporting individuals purchasing medicines and products from local pharmacies for the treatment of minor ailments as part of self-care. Many treatments for minor illnesses are more expensive when they are provided on an NHS prescription, compared to the purchase price to the individual, from the pharmacies or supermarket etc. Your local pharmacy is ideally placed and can be more accessible for individuals to offer prompt advice about treatment of minor ailments and injuries. There is no need for an appointment, they are open longer hours over the week and they stock a wide range of inexpensive treatments. The Pharmacy First service is now accessible at local community pharmacies. This means people that get free prescriptions can get over the counter treatment for minor common illnesses FREE, such as fever, sore throats, head lice, rash, hay fever etc. Can I remind you that pharmacists
know as much about medicines as doctors, and they are there to advise you about taking new medicines and can go over with you how best to use current medicines, they offer advice on side-effects to medication. If you are not sure about repeat prescriptions, they can help you review your personal requirements. In fact, I had a relative who should have been using an inhaler to assist with breathing, prescribed in hospital, who actually had forgotten the process of using the appliance when they got home. And it proved to be an important part of their daily care. So, we nipped down to the pharmacy and had a chat, and now all is sorted and they know how to get a prescription when this machine is empty. Please remember, you can have a private consultation if you wish. St George’s Day celebrations A MAJOR event in our yearly scouting calendar is joining together with other Scout groups from our District to celebrate St George’s Day. This year was no different as young people and leaders from all the scouting sections (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts) that make up 1st Farnsfield Scout Group joined in the parade through Southwell, culminating in a celebration service at Southwell Minster. Over 800 scouts assembled at The Burgage, Southwell before parading through the town to the celebration service which was held at the minster for all sections. After the service the parade reassembled in the minster grounds and marched on to the Memorial Field, Bishops Drive. This coming term the whole Scout group is going on a camp discovering time travel. 56 young people and adults enjoying a weekend of activities at a local campsite. Other activities this term include the Farnsfield Scarecrow Festival being held
on Monday, 1st May. Come and see our scarecrows! If you would like to join the fun and
adventure please contact Chris on 07779324341 or email join@1stfarnsfield. org.uk.
Farnsfield Scouts group is getting much bigger YOU may have seen on the local and national news about the popularity of Scouting with there now being 618,000 members across the UK and 40 million worldwide – five times the population of in London!
Scouting through the 90s was on decline but has now celebrated its 12th year of growth showing it is still as relevant as it was 110 years ago. It's no different in Farnsfield. Over the last three years the group has gone from having just short of 20 members to this year now having more than 100 members. That is down to the local community supporting the group. More adults are choosing to volunteer with the Scouts but not necessarily in the traditional areas you may think. This year Farnsfield have had five new adult volunteers who choose to support the group — in its administration and management once a
term, and three new volunteers who help on evenings once a month. We do, however, need more support to enable young people in the village to enjoy adventure! If you think you can help but are not sure with what, why not get in contact with Chris on 07779324341 or go to 1stfarnsfield.org.uk/volun teer

Match will pay tribute to a Wrens stalwart BY the time this article is in print Rainworth Miners’ Welfare Football Club will know whether they have been successful in their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier Division of the Northern Counties East League.
However, should Barton fail to beat inform Parkgate then Rainworth will be safe. But if the worst happens and they do go down, the next question will be into which
As it was being written, though, the Wrens still had two matches left to save themselves, and needed either one win or two draws to be sure of staying up without having to rely on the results of others.
Rainworth’s own two remaining games at the time of writing were Garforth Town away, and Hemsworth Miners’ Welfare at home on the last day of the season. Both these clubs are mid-table with only pride left to play for. The home game against Garforth in November ended goalless, and although a week later they lost 5-3 in the fog at Hemsworth, they have since then returned there to win 2-0 in the League Cup, prior to bowing out to Emley in the next round.
Whatever happens, there is one further diary date, on Saturday, 13th May, when Rainworth will host Old Elizabethans in a charity match for the Kim Wright Memorial Association. Kim was vice-chairman of the club until his untimely death earlier in the season, and he was also associated with OEs, having played for both clubs in his younger days.
The crucial home match on Easter Saturday at home to fellow relegation candidates Parkgate enabled the Rotherham-based visitors to draw level with Rainworth on points, and the Steelmen’s 3-0 victory also lifted them above Rainworth on goal difference. Meanwhile Barton Town were winning 2-0 against Worksop Town, so while they remain in the bottom three above already doomed Armthorpe Welfare and Retford United, if they were to beat Parkgate on the final day of the season and Rainworth were to fail to take at least two points from their remaining two games, the Wrens would find themselves relegated.
points to remain in their current league. It promises to be a nail-biting end to the season for the club.

league? Rainworth are the most southerly club in the Northern Counties East League, and if they do drop to step 6 of the National Leagues System they would prefer to enter the East Midlands Counties League rather than NCEL Division One, because it would involve far less travelling. Whether they are allowed to make that switch would depend on the knock-on effect of promotions and relegations throughout the national system, and they would probably not know where they would be placed until midway through the close season. So the only way to avoid the uncertainty would be to make sure they obtain enough
