1913 Poem Methodist Success for coffee Church morning Fields that flourish in crop and grain What is and always seemed would be Tilled soil, the plough and rake does tame Watched on by lark whose skies are free. The hapless scarecrow with relentless wave That stealthy hawk daubs with mistrust, And hornets gather what the sweet tooth crave. Whilst horse and plough does thrust. Beam and rein, hitched to strike the trace, All gleaned aside for the share and blade. These rites of passage for a status place In this scene of summer never to forsake. A fixed bayonet reply against machine gunfire. From ditch and dyke now trench, pit and grave. The hawthorn and briar are surrounds of wire. And the fields weft and weave all pox paved. The sniping hawk spits lead and hot metal And soil rains a blanket death lies beneath. Spewed earth showers like confetti’s petal Over scarecrow’s of flesh and bone baring teeth, Like limp rag dolls, bait the crow to plunder, Whilst youth fearfully wait in a sacrificial state, To paint blood red under leaden skies of thunder. And our scene of summer now befits the devil’s wake. Manicured lawns and privet topiary spirals An ordered scene maintained with zealous thanks. Granite troops now parade in ceremonial files In a cemetery for workers of plough and tanks. Tranquility stifles the elation of the battle glory. And their absence deafens shouts of waste and pain. This piece England, this foreign land has its story, A sanitised account of names without a smear or stain. It is a homage given of gratitude to the ultimate cost, But “To grow old and weary,”would have been their choice. To fight to preserve freedom was won but also lost And our song of summer now returns with a solemn voice. ©Nick Staley

It’s not too late to plant spring bulbs and indeed it may be cheaper now to achieve your spring displays as most shops and garden centres are reducing bulb prices to make way for Christmas displays. In the garden and in containers one can get a succession of flowering bulbs by planting them in layers one on top of the other, as larger bulbs in general need planting deeper than smaller bulbs like crocus for example. In the picture you can see that I have a large pot that contains a variegated hosta called Cherry Berry; and I have planted tulip bulbs and crocus to add colour before the hosta reaches its full size and display potential. You can just make out the grassy looking leaves of crocus that flowered in February giving very early colour. It is important however to remember to allow the leaves of the bulbs to die down naturally and not to cut them off or tie them in a not to make things look tidier. If you do not allow the leaves to die back naturally then the bulb cannot build up food stores for next year’s flowering and will diminish and die.
Other jobs in the garden in November: Cut back and tidy up the spent flower spikes in the herbaceous boarders such as lupines, hollyhocks and any other perennial looking past its best. Sow sweet peas for next year’s crop of flowers, this can be in pots or direct sowing in the garden. I like to use fibre pots and put them in a cold frame or cold greenhouse over winter and planting them out in spring for an early crop. I am unable to sow outside directly, as we have a population of mice that live in the dry stone walling running between five gardens who eat the seeds over night after sowing. There are two schools of thought as to whether to prune roses in the autumn or in March! I like to hard prune in the autumn because my garden is in a very windy spot and I find that if I leave it until the spring my roses suffer from wind rock. This is when the wind catches the unpruned mass of twigs and leaves and rocks the rose backwards and forwards forming a cone shape gap to appear at ground level around the stem just above the roots. If it snows or rain freezes in this zone it can kill the rose
bush, so I am one that prunes early. I also feel that it looks tidier through the winter and I have more room to get among the plants to weed and to top dress. Don’t forget to start feeding the birds and once you start please keep it up through the winter months as our little feathered friends will be depending on you. Enjoy your gardening Brian Reece MBA, FCIH, Chartered Horticulturalist

Gedling Country Park has become a fully accessible and disabled friendly park thanks to the installation of a special toilet and changing facility for people with severe disabilities. The Changing Places toilet, the first of its kind in the borough, and one of only 1,000 across the country, will meet the needs of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well people with other physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis who often need extra equipment and space to allow them to use the toilets safely and comfortably. The facilities next to the newly opened Café 1899 were built by G F Tomlinson and will include height adjustable changing benches, a tracking hoist system, space for disabled people and carers, a central toilet and a non-slip floor. Access to the facilities will be available with a radar key. The installation is part of a wider ranging promise made by the council to make the
destination country park accessible to all. The pathways around the 200 acre site are compliant with legal requirements for the disabled which includes wide pathways for wheelchairs, easy access including ramps and radar key doors, disabled parking bays and the children’s play area was also designed to ensure children with disabilities can enjoy the park too. Craig Stopper, Framework Manager at G F Tomlinson said “This has been a project that the team at G F Tomlinson has been proud to have delivered. Every Photo opportunity – Friday 20 October at 1pm – Gedling Country Park. Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Cllr John Clarke, G L Tomlinson and representatives from SCOPE, a charity that supports disabled people to have equal opportunities, will be there with disabled users who will be available for interviews and photos. Page 2 of 2 aspect of this new centre has been created with inclusivity in mind and with the aim
to bring everyone in the community together. Specialist facilities like these will have a positive impact on the lives of the people who use them and I’m confident will be used for years to come.” Leader of the Council, Councillor John Clarke said; “When we initially designed the new visitor centre and café it was of vital importance that we provide facilities for the disabled and the Changing Places toilet is an excellent facility and the only one of its kind in the borough. This alongside the other things we’ve done makes this park a truly accessible park that is open and available for everyone to enjoy.”

Blidworth Local News Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society At our meeting on October 3rd we had as guest speaker, Bob Massey. His talk was based on the history of Skegness; or, as he called it, Nottingham on Sea. His illustrated presentation was very interesting and although his audience were familiar with the town, Bob's knowledge was encyclopaedic. For example, we had no idea that the original name of the town was 'Skeggi', a Viking name akin to its modern nickname. Also it was a thriving port, importing coal, fish and timber, although at this time it was a great way further east than the town is now as the coast was gradually eroded away by storm. Bob suggested that the town had moved inland about a mile over its history. During that time the area was a notorious place for smugglers and Bob told the story of a blue uniformed excise officer who entered the town and promptly disappeared never to be seen again. When the Vine Hotel was being altered in 1902 a skeleton wearing a tattered blue jacket was found behind a walled up area of the hotel. By 1400, Skegness was already thought of as a health resort but it was the coming of the railway in the later part of the 19th century that enabled the holiday town to expand and many of the people of Nottingham and the East Midlands spent their annual holiday there. In 1908 the Great Northern Railway commissioned the famous poster, now the mascot of Skegness, 'The Jolly Fisherman' and the slogan 'Skegness is SO bracing'. On the sands, donkeys were used to pull bathing huts into the sea so that the Victorian bathers could keep their modesty and 'dippers' were employed to 'dip' them under water - hence the term 'to take a dip'. Billy Butlin, a travelling showman, came to Skegness in 1921 and built his first holiday camp in 1935. Our members and guests had no idea that Skegness had so much interesting history and thoroughly enjoyed Bob's presentation.
Our next three meeting details are as follows; •7th November - Colin Hobday - 'Derbyshire Delights'. •5th December - Christmas Meeting. •3rd January - Carol Lovejoy Edwards Mansfield & the Great War. The meetings are in the Function Room of the Blidworth Welfare. Doors are open at 6.45 pm. Ample parking is available. New members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is a small charge on the door of £2 to cover refreshments. We would love to see any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy and add to our extensive archive. If you would like more information please contact us through our website. You are also invited to submit articles relating to our local history for consideration for publication on our website. Rainworth Local News Light up our Community 13
Send your news and photos to chloe@news-journal.co.uk
This year, for the first time, there is to be a Community Christmas Tree in Rainworth. There is a huge fir tree in the grounds of St Simon and St Jude’s Church which is ideal for this purpose. On Wednesday 6th December, at 6.00pm the lights will be switched on and we want to bring as much of the community together as possible to make this a wonderful occasion. We will have a special guest to switch on the lights, and also join together to sing Christmas songs and carols around the tree. We are inviting local music groups, bands and choirs to be part of this, hoping that they will perform a couple of pieces of their own, and join in with the community singing. There will be refreshments served afterwards. We invite you to join in with the rest of our communities by coming and enjoying the evening. We would love it if you could bring a bauble for the tree- it would be great if you could make your own- which celebrates who you are and what you are about. Please attach a label so that everyone will know about you. Ideas and inspiration for baubles will be available on our Facebook page. Blidworth and Rainworth POP (People of Peace) Let us know if you going to take part via our ‘Event’ on Facebook or by email. If there is anyone out there who is able to participate in any other way, offering help or making suggestions, please do send a private message or contact me by email. magarner10@viginmedia.com OUTLINE OF THE EVENING 5.30pm onwards
Arrival and bringing of baubles for the tree. (Baubles can be brought in advance and left at St Simon and St Jude’s on Friday or Saturday morning between 10.00 and 12.00, in the coffee shop, or on Sunday morning when the church will be open for the 10.30 service.) 6.00pm Lights Switch on Singing of Songs and Carols round the tree supported by local bands and choirs. Schools’ bands and choirs, and any others who want to be involved are invited to bring 2 pieces, and there will be some community singing as well-words provided. Who are we, and why are we doing this? A group of people brought together orig-
inally by the local Anglican Churches, to work together in a peaceful community, and for members of the community to connect with each other. We call ourselves ‘People of Peace’, People Enthusiastic About Community and Environment. and are inspired by the late Jo Cox’ words from her maiden speech in Parliament: ‘WE ARE FAR MORE UNITED AND HAVE FAR MORE IN COMMON WITH EACH OTHER THAN THINGS WHICH DIVIDE US.’ WE ARE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS IN OUR COMMUNITIES TOGETHER.
Well here at Sam’s Workplace we celebrated Halloween in true style. Our cobweb biscuits were a raging success as were our pumpkin decorations! Not everyone can have a unicorn pumpkin but we managed it. Hope everyone saw it at our premises on Preston Road in Rainworth. So how could we top that for bonfire night? We’ve ordered in bonfire toffee (everyone’s favourite for the cold nights), plus we’re making some firework kebabs (you need to come in to find out more!). Plus bonfire cupcakes …. you know you want them! We will also be making our remembrance day biscuits again this year, to show our support for our brave soldiers.! In these cold days, why not pop in for one of our warming Hot Chocolates - topped with
marshmallows, cream and chocolate - for only £1 you won’t find a better bargain this November! In the run up to Christmas our guys have been working super hard on unique and individual items for Christmas - pop in to see our decorated jars, personalised plates, sweet boxes, biscuit bake jars and elf doors. All details of products and how to buy are on our newly created website - check us out on www.samsworkplace.co.uk or pop in to see us we’re at 37 Preston Road, Rainworth - we’re your local community cafe and we’d lovely to see you! If you have a few spare hours any time during the week, we’re looking for volunteers to work with our fantastic young people - we would need to carry out a DBS check, but come in and chat with us ….. it’s not just biscuits and sweets, we’re
working hard in the workshop and allotment too. we’re waiting to hear from you all Happy Bonfire Night!
Send us an electronic copy of photographs with a few details and we will try to publish them in a future edition. In each edition we devote pages to
news of achievements and success by individuals and groups in the area. Email chloe@news-journal.co.uk with your news and photographs or suggestions of items to be included.

Minster Bramley Apple Festival has another fruitful year A record number of people visited the annual Bramley Food & Drink Festival in Southwell Minster last weekend, with over 350 children taking part in apple-themed craft activities in the State Chamber of the Archbishop’s Palace. Nearly 2000 adults attended the popular event - plus some special visitors from Japan – who all enjoyed the many stalls, demonstrations, and activities – including a Morris Dancing display. The Dean, the Very Revd Nicola Sullivan, said: “It was an exceedingly enjoyable day in the Minster and the town, reminding us how the story of fabulous Bramley apple
builds friendships of all ages locally and across the world.”

Walk in the woods - Rotary club of Ravenshead & Blidworth Once again all the members of the Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs wish to thank everyone who took part in our annual walk and soup lunch. We had the usual good turn out and despite some mud on parts of the path everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. And once more we had good weather. How do we manage it year after year?
Although at the time of writing we have not quite settled our final accounts we know that you have helped to raise a very generous amount for the charities we support and particularly Aquabox. A big thank you for that. Can we also give our thanks to those whose cooperation makes the walk possible – the Scout Group for the use of the Ravens Lodge, the volunteers of Ravenshead Community Transport, Cornwater Evergreens, Mark Bradbury at the Deli, the Larch Farm Inn and, again, everyone who came on the day. Apologies to anyone we have forgotten. When we all finally collapsed at the end of the day we felt our hard work had all been worth while. Bob Jackson On behalf of all the members of the two clubs.

Helping to reduce hospital admissions An innovative new system that is helping King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton, to cut unnecessary admissions and get elderly and vulnerable patients back home quickly is the first of its kind in the East Midlands. Sherwood Forest Hospitals, Nottinghamshire Health Informatics Service (NHIS) and Nottinghamshire County Council have worked closely together to develop the communication system. It allows staff working in the Emergency Department at the hospital to have access to some key aspects of information held on the council’s adult social care electronic records, once the patient has consented to information being shared. That means hospital staff can see whether a social care package is in place for a patient, enabling them to make a more informed decision about whether the patient can be sent home safely, whatever the time of day, knowing the right care and support is in place. Previously staff had to rely on asking a social care worker to look up the information, which was not possible out of office hours.
Specialist discharge nurse at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, Debbie Thompson, said: “This new system has made decision making when discharging patients a much quicker process, especially out of hours, as we know whether vulnerable or elderly patients will have the support they need in place when they return home. “We know how important it is that patients, in particular elderly and vulnerable patients, can return to their own home as quickly as possible rather than having to be admitted to hospital unnecessarily – one week of reduced mobility can result in a 10% to 20% reduction in muscle mass, meaning that elderly patients can go from independent to dependent just by spending a week in hospital. “This new system helps us to ensure that we can deliver the care that the patient needs in a timely way and get them back in their home and independent.” If a care package is in place, contact details of the care provider are displayed allowing the clinician to contact the service provider directly. This allows a decision to be made more speedily, and in most cases
without the need to contact on-site social care teams. Claire Atkinson, team manager at the council’s hospital assessment team covering Mansfield, said: “This system is allowing health professionals working in the Emergency Department to make informed decisions on whether there is care and support at home for vulnerable people they see to help reduce unnecessary admissions. “It will also highlight if the County Council has any safeguarding concerns relating to an individual so health professionals can work with social workers to ensure that it is safe to discharge the person home.” Mary Whetstone, business change and project manager at the Nottinghamshire Health Informatics Service, said: “This was a clinically lead project that has supported Emergency Department staff to make appropriate decisions about whether it is safe to discharge a patient out of hours. It has reduced the amount of time spent discussing ‘routine’ patients with the Social Care team in Emergency Department, allowing them to focus on the more complex cases.”
Sky’s the limit for fundraising Kate When Kate Bradshaw bought a sky dive as a birthday present for her father’s 69th birthday, little did she expect to also be completing the dive at the same time. Kate, (37), a marketing assistant for business gifts and promotional merchandise specialists Pellacraft, completed the dive with her father, Trevor Wellings, at Langar Airfield, raising £300 for homeless charity Framework.
So far fundraising by Pellacraft for Framework has realised more than £8,000. Framework is Pellacraft’s nominated charity and staff are encouraged to help the company raise more money by doing their own independent fundraising activities. Kate, of Mansfield, said: “When my col-
leagues said they would sponsor me to do the sky dive at the same time as my dad, it seemed like a good idea. “While it was scary, I was thrilled that I had the courage to jump out of the airplane. It was great to do something together with my dad while at the same time know that I would be helping a homeless person.” The money will be given to Framework’s Sherwood Street Centre in Mansfield, which offers 15 units of high-quality emergency accommodation for people who have either been sleeping rough or are at immediate risk of doing so.
in the community. Pellacraft has been supporting Framework since 2015 and staff have participated in a number of activities to raise money. These include donating Easter Eggs and Christmas dinners, completing the 5k colour Runga Run as well as sleep-outs and other initiatives.
The service, which accommodates some of the most vulnerable local people, is staffed 24 hours a day and is designed to help residents along a journey to independent living

What’s On Garden bird of the month 23
The chances of you seeing this bird species in your garden are remote. However, I had one visit my garden regularly over a period of six weeks during the winter of 2009. The Ring-necked Parakeet or Rose-ringed Parakeet, as it is sometimes known, originates from southern Asia and central Africa. Nowadays, it is found in European countries including Britain. How did the species arrive over here? It is said that some escaped from the film set of “The African Queen” at Shepperton studios in 1951. Others say that a few escaped from containers at Heathrow Airport and there is even a rumour that Jimi Hendrix released some to bring some psychedelic colour to Britain. Rumours apart, it is widely accepted by ornithologists that they descend from a number of birds which were either accidentally or deliberately released in to the wild. The species was first recorded as breeding in England in 1969. There are now calculated to be 30,000 plus, mainly in the south-east of England. They have been here long enough to acclimatise in our country and therefore have no problem dealing with our winter
temperatures. Their diet consists of nuts, berries and seeds and they supplement this by visiting garden tables and feeders. Being larger than many of our garden birds, they are able to compete for food and nesting places and this has earned them a rather negative reputation. They are very vocal birds and their call is certainly distinctive. In Nottinghamshire, sightings of this species are thought to be escaped birds rather than from the main feral population in the south-east of the country. Occasionally, there are sightings in Wollaton Park and over the past few years they have appeared in various gardens throughout the county. Jean Powley Jean is a voluntary Ambassador for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch scheme in Nottinghamshire. If you enjoy watching birds and other wildlife which visit your garde, Garden BirdWatch may be operect for you. If you would like a free information pack about the scheme, contact Jean at jpbirds@outlook.com

Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy is honoured to present new trophy in memory of much loved pupil Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy says it is ‘honoured’ to begin what it hopes will become a school tradition for generations after the donation of a new school trophy from the parents of a much-loved former pupil at the school. Former Bilsthorpe residents, Jean and Ron Weaver have donated not only a new school trophy to the school, but new sports t-shirts too, in memory of their son Lee Weaver, who attended the school between 1965 – 1971. Sadly, Lee died suddenly but peacefully in July 2016 and his parents said after the huge support they received from local people, they decided to donate something lasting to the school that holds such a strong connection to their family. “Lee never realised how much he was liked,” said his father, Ron Weaver, “He would be so proud.” The school intends to present the trophy annually on sports day. “I played football with Lee when he was a youngster and he went onto being the youngest boy to be chosen for his school team and went onto play for Dukeries, Joseph Whitaker, the Youth League and County. He loved Manchester United and we would often go to watch matches with other fans from Bilsthorpe in a mini bus.” Lee’s Mum Jean said she thinks her son would be proud to know his memory will live on at his school. “We have had many generations of the family attending the school, starting with me, and we still have family attending now! It would mean the world to Lee that the trophy will be given at sports day each year and we hope to continue attending, and our daughter after us, for many years to come.” Anne Ingle, Acting Head Teacher at the school said they were honoured and proud to keep Lee’s memory alive. “Lee not only was a former pupil here, but his family have connections to the school dating back an astonishing 74 years. So, it is our absolute privilege to present the Lee Weaver Trophy annually to the Team Winners of our Sports Day and we would like to say a huge thank you to his parents for donating not only the trophy and sports shirts to our pupils, but for their continued support of the school. We will honour Lee’s memory every year and tell new generations of children of his inspirational sporting achievements at the school. We hope his memory will go on inspiring children in the community for generation to come.”

Bilsthorpe’s Oakwood Fuels Ltd donate 110 safety vests to local school children Oakwood Fuels Ltd have donated 110 high visibility vests to their local school, Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy. Acting Head Teacher Anne Ingle said the vests are crucial equipment for the school. “We are so grateful to Oakwood Fuels Ltd for the donation, the company is a great supporter of our wonderful school. The vests are required to help us to keep children safe on outings and donations of this kind mean that school funds can be directed towards learning resources instead. All of the staff and children want to say a big thank you to Oakwood for once again stepping in to help us.” Gareth Lowry, Commercial Manager at Oakwood Fuels Ltd says his company maintains strong ties with the school. “We heard that the school required high visibility jackets so that when they take the children out on excursions children will be visible and safe. They needed a cross section of sizes to suit the different age ranges and we were pleased to provide 110 of them. “We are a very large employer within the village and we felt it was the right thing to do. Many of our own employees have children at the school and we would like to think that in years to come some of the children here will come and work for Oakwood too!”

Brits are so house-proud two-thirds of us clean before the cleaner comes
With Brexit looming, nesting Brits are taking more satisfaction in their homes than ever with two thirds of us admitting to cleaning or tidying before the cleaner comes. The living room (46%)* and kitchen (32%) are the two rooms we like to show off the most and a staggering 95% of Brits consider themselves house-proud. Furthermore, over two-thirds (67%) look after their homes as they consider it a long-term investment, despite economic uncertainty. A HOUSE-PROUD NATION •TWO THIRDS OF BRITS ADMIT TO CLEANING BEFORE THE CLEANER COMES •MAJORITY OF BRITS (67%) STILL CONSIDER THEIR HOME A LONG TERM INVESTMENT DESPITE ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY Britain’s homes are more pristine than ever, as we’re fast becoming a nation of Hyacinth Buckets. Money talks – at least at home as over two-thirds (67%) say they look after the space they live in as they consider it a longterm investment, according to a poll by kitchen retailer Magnet. A quarter of us take greater pride in our home than our parents did at the same age and almost a third are prouder than they were 10 years ago, while half of the homeowners surveyed (51%) confess to having been embarrassed about their homes previously when hosting guests. And it’s not just the furniture and electrical items that matter - half of us say it’s important that crockery and other soft furnishing match. But only for special guests, as the majority of Brits only get their best crockery and cutlery out less than twice a year (78%). Tech takes top place as the TV is the object we take greatest pride in (15%), followed by the oven (9%) and professional art (10%) – which beats children’s art which is only considered something we’re proud of by 6% of those polled. A Magnet spokesperson said: “We set out to identify how house-proud we are as a nation and we were reassured
to see just how much a nice home means to us. “In times of economic uncertainty, people want a home they can not only see a haven they can relax and de-stress in, but also show off to friends and visitors as a marker of what they work hard for. “We see where we live as a reflection of ourselves and put a great deal of effort into making it a space we can take pride in.” Yorkshire (96%) is the most house-proud region of the country, while those in Wales considered this the least important. Top ten household objects we are most proud of: 1.TV 2.Oven 3.Professional art 4.Display cabinet 5.Sound system
6.Photography 7.Tablet / laptop 8.Children’s art 9.Dinner service 10.Coffee machine Top ten house-proud cities: 1.Leeds 2.Belfast 3.Manchester 4.Bristol 5.Norwich 6.Cardiff 7.London 8.Birmingham 9.Croydon 10.Newcastle It’s the older generation (the over 70s) who are most proud of their homes (98%), surprisingly closely followed by millennials (96%).

Red is the colour for the Christmas season This Autumn/ Winter Season I venture to write about the colour RED. You may well ask why RED ?? I am particularly drawn to this colour because it is Bright, Bold, Daring and just right for Christmas season. The other day when I went into Dune – the high street shop as you know, I couldn’t but fail to notice the bright RED Suede boots, kitten heeled shoes and flats. I loved them then the question is where would you wear these footwear and what will you wear them with? It suddenly dawned upon me that of course these footwear can be worn for Christmas. Now let us take a peek at the looks we can then follow.
Tarannum Shad Dune Red cross strap two part court shoe £85
Flowing Midi dress with long sleeves £69
The Collection – Grey sequin cat Christmas jumper £30.00
Dune Point Toe Ruched Calf Boot £145
Shapewear: It's My Secret There's no denying that shapewear has been a godsend, designed to even out our lumps and bumps and give us a smooth silhouette under that little black dress. But let's be honest - it's never been the most flattering option for a big night out. Every woman of a certain age remembers the scene from Bridget Jones' Diary, where Bridget finally gets her man while looking svelte and stunning in a figure-hugging black evening dress - only to reveal at the crucial moment that a giant pair of fleshtoned, control top granny pants had been doing all the hard work for her.
Thankfully, there is another option if you'd rather wear something a bit sexier under your outfit for that big date. The "It's My Secret" range from www.kaleidoscope.co.uk features beautiful designs with control panels built into the clothes themselves. Choose from dresses, jeans, trousers and skirts: there's an option for every occasion so you can banish your unflattering undies
to the back of the drawer forever.
The It's My Secret Dress (pictured, £59) comes in sizes 10-22 and features a shaping tube, running from the waistband to the thigh to smooth your tummy and give you a flattering silhouette, while the ruched sleeves and gathered front will have you brimming with confidence for that big night out. Jeans can be a problem item if you're worried about your tum, but the collection's stretch jeans (pictured, £39), available in black or blue washes, feature a control panel in the tummy area to offer a bit more
streamlining. The straight-leg style goes well with pumps for daytime wear or heels for an evening look, making them ideal for any occasion. Also available in the collection are smart black trousers (£32) and skirts (£28), offering the comfort of an elastic waist but without the bunching and wrinkling: ideal for a night out our a day at the office. And for a more casual look, choose from the long-line denim skirt (£35) or black capri pants (£17.50). With looks for all kinds of occasions, the It's My Secret range is a secret worth keeping. Proposals for new powers to improve living conditions in the borough A consultation has been launched to introduce new powers to make privately rented homes better for people to live in. Gedling Borough Council is asking residents in Netherfield to have their say on plans to make it mandatory for landlords to have licences for each of their private rented properties in the Netherfield area. The licence means that the landlord has to provide minimum standards of accommodation for residents. The council will work with landlords and residents to improve the area but where necessary use the licensing conditions and enforcement powers to bring about improvements. The power, known as Selective Licencing, can be applied in areas where there is deprivation, high levels of antisocial behaviour, high levels of crime and poor housing conditions. The licencing will gives the Council’s Environmental Health team powers to do more when landlords are not taking steps to deal with issues relating to properties. Each licence will cost around £675 per property for a five year licence, the equivalent of £2.50 per week for each property. The proposals are being welcomed by Think Big Developments, a local landlord and construction firm who have recently transformed a run-down property in the
Netherfield area into a liveable dwelling. They also provide training and employment through the renovation of affordable homes. Think Big Development owners Louchavan Lemard and Ryan Jeffers said; “We believe that the introduction of the licencing will help prevent exploitation of low income tenants and improve the quality of housing that is available to Page 2 of 3 residents of Netherfield. The system will help regulate what’s going on in the private sector and we fully support Gedling Borough Council’s proposals. Our vision is to provide employment, high quality and affordable housing.” Portfolio Holder for Public Protection, Cllr David Ellis said; “This is a very important consultation and could make a really important difference to this community. Residents have a right to
live in properties that are fit for purpose. Asking landlords to meet our standards acts as way of improving housing conditions and property management and also it can have a longer term effect of reducing anti-social behaviour and crime which can be linked to areas with deprivation and poor living conditions.” Consultation on the proposals to introduce mandatory licencing in Netherfield is open until 5 January and residents and business owners can have their say by visiting www. gedling.gov.uk/haveyoursay. There will be two consultation events, the first one will be for residents on Thursday 2 November at St George’s Centre, Netherfield at 6pm and on Tuesday 21 November, Landlords will be able to have their say at an event at Gedling Borough Council at 6pm.

Break the cycle of Yo-Yo dieting and sugar cravings If like many of my clients you seem to have been yo-yo dieting all your life then its time for a different approach to weight reduction.
Many of my clients come to me because they’ve been on diets and lost weight by calorie control and will power which was okay but has meant they’ve had to deprive themselves of some of the food they love to eat, only to put all the weight back on (and sometimes more besides) when they have begun to eat ‘normally’ again. It’s a yo-yo cycle that Hypnotherapy can completely change. Our Weight Management Programme is not a diet – you can eat what you want,
when you want. Now if that sounds crazy to you let’s just say that the emphasis is on the word ‘want’. Hypnotherapy re-codes the subconscious mind to change the bad eating habits you may have got into so that you only want the foods that are good for you. So just by listening to your subconscious mind and making some subtle adjustments to your eating habits you will not only lose weight but it will stay off permanently.
Let’s work together to make your weight problems a thing of the past. Margaret Turner Clinical Hypnotherapist
If you‘ve tried every diet in the book and are disillusioned with dieting then give me a ring to find out more about our Weight Management Programme on 01623 556234. Our therapy rooms are in Sutton in Ashfield and Rosegarth Clinic Mansfield.
Hypnosis is the perfect tool for overcoming fears and phobias Do you have a fear or phobia? Do you fear speaking in public, flying, elevators, spiders, snakes, open spaces, closed spaces, the sight of blood, diseases, germs, or people? Do you experience palpitations, anxiety, trouble breathing, or sweating? Hypnosis has been proven to be extremely effective in either controlling fears and phobias or eliminating them entirely. What is a 'fear'? A fear is what we feel when we are in the presence of a real danger… it is the feeling associated with our body preparing itself to either fight the source of the danger, or escape from it. What is a phobia? A phobia is a similar, often extremely intense feeling of fear, which is caused this time, by a situation or object which doesn't actually pose any real threat to our safety. Common with many phobias, is the feeling of loss of control in the given situation, this brings stress and anxiety, and often full scale panic. Often, the person will avoid the situation or object which brings these feelings, and when they avoid it, (and subsequently don't get these feelings of anxiety), this only serves to re-enforce the link between the object or situation, and the fear. Hypnosis has been proven to be extremely effective in either controlling fears and phobias or eliminating them entirely. In
Hypnosis your subconscious mind is open and receptive to a new way of thinking and feeling. If you have a fear or phobia that is starting to control the way you live your life, then now is the right time to do something about it, don’t suffer in silence. For more information, or to make an
appointment call Clem Turner or Margaret Turner on 01623 556234 or the Rosegarth Clinic on 01623 658224. The Clem Turner Hypnotherapy Practice e-mail: clem@clemturner.co.uk www.clemturner.co.uk

Our traditional Sunday roast If there’s one thing that us British can all agree on, it is our love of the traditional roast dinner. For centuries, this hearty feast has unified families every Sunday, bringing us all together to feast on delicious meat, crisp potatoes and fresh vegetables. However, have you ever wondered how we grew to love this meal so much? It turns out that our ancestors started eating beef on Sunday’s way back during the reign of King Henry VII in 1485. Now depending upon your personal preference, you may prefer chicken, lamb or even pork but if you want to keep it really traditional, you’ll opt for that family favourite beef. Common traditional accompaniments include: •Beef: Yorkshire pudding, suet pudding; English mustard, or horseradish sauce. •Pork: crackling, sage-and-onion stuffing; apple sauce or English mustard. •Lamb: mint sauce or jelly or redcurrant jelly. •Chicken: pigs in blankets, sausages or sausage meat, stuffing, bread sauce, apple sauce, cranberry sauce or redcurrant jelly. We’ve all heard the old wife’s tale that eating carrots will improve your eyesight but did you know that carrots used to be purple? When it comes to potatoes, you may be
surprised to learn that the British treated them with great distaste until the board of agriculture launched a massive campaign to sway public opinion. The Spanish brought them back from Peru in 1536 but it wasn’t until 1795 that we started eating them in Blighty, where they were quickly made a staple ingredient of a roast dinner. More than a fifth simply say they aren’t bothered about eating a Sunday roast, while 18 per cent claim they don’t have the
time to cook it. And more than one in ten reckon it’s a lot of time and effort for a meal that only takes 10 minutes to eat. So with this said is a traditional Sunday Lunch coming to a sad end or is our obsession for active life’s
BUSSINESS support provider Enterprise Loans has given an essential funding boost to more start-ups and growing businesses than ever in the East Midlands over the past six months. The not for profit organisation, formerly known as First Enterprise, provides responsible loans and business advice and has given out £1,450,000 in much needed cash to 85 fledging companies and growing organisations across the region, since April 1 this year. The businesses which have benefitted are primarily within the food and drink sector. Enterprise Loans has a strong history of helping food and drink retailers to thrive. Earlier this year, four out of the five businesses it had previously supported and put forward for the 2017 Nottingham Post Food and Drink Awards were shortlisted, including Junkyard in Bridlesmith Walk, run by Nigel Garlick and Sam Dean, which won Best Drink’s Venue. Entrepreneurial duo Nigel and Sam, who run Junkbars Ltd, received £50,000 worth of loans from First Enterprise to launch Junkyard, a specialist craft beer bar, and their latest venture the Herbert Kilpin Public House in Nottingham - which opened last year. Herbert Kilpin was named after founder of Italian football club A.C Milan who hails from Nottingham. It’s the third pub to be set up by the pair who also run popular cocktail bar Boilermarker in Nottingham’s
Lace Market. Nigel said: “We’ve always found Enterprise Loans to be really supportive and the success of our venues wouldn’t have been possible without its financial backing.” Another Nottingham company to have benefitted from Enterprise Loans’ support is the Treat Kitchen, which was shortlisted for growth in the 2016 Citi Micro Entrepreneurship Awards. It received £25,000 from the organisation to help it achieve strategic growth. Set up by entrepreneurial couple Jess and Martin Barnett in 2014, The Treat Kitchen is an independent, family run confectionary retailer offering beautifully packaged, high quality confectionary. Neil Millington, loan fund manager at Enterprise Loans, said: “Jess and Martin are a great inspiration for other entrepreneurs and those looking to follow their career dreams. “In the short space of about three years their business has grown from one to five stores and has products available across hundreds of locations due to their wholesale arm. They also now employ 42 full and part time staff – a brilliant achievement.” The Incredible Bakery Company, in Northamptonshire, received a loan of £20,000 from First Enterprise last month to help it expand. The bakery was set up by Valeria and James Turner after they discovered their son Leon was affected by multiple food al-
lergies and spotted a gap in the market for tasty, allergen free produce. As a result all their produce is coeliac and vegan friendly as well as being free from gluten, dairy, eggs and soya. Since launching, the bakery has received multiple awards and now sells its products across the country to caterers, food outlets and specialist retailers. Neil added: “We are passionate about helping to grow businesses and support entrepreneurs. We know there are many people out there that just need a financial boost to enable their businesses to develop and flourish and we want them to know that we are here and ready to help. “The last six months have been record breaking for us and we are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. It is more apparent than ever that Midlands businesses need our support to flourish. Whether they need funding and advice or help getting started or investing in new premises or equipment, we are here to support them.” For more details about Enterprise Loans visit www.first-enterprise.co.uk or call 0115 942 3772.

Wrens stay in top half of table
It’s been another mixed month for Rainworth Miners’ Welfare Football Club, but one which has seen an encouraging upturn in performances, and has ensured that they have held their place in the top half of the Nortrhern Counties East League Premier Division table. The period under review did not begin well, however, when a disappointing display at home to Albion Sports, from Bradford, brought an unexpected 3-0 reverse, and really the Wrens could have no complaints on the day, with a disjointed display. Four days later Craig Denton’s men were back on home soil for a local derby against old rivals Staveley Miners’ Welfare. Denton had demanded from his side both a performance and a result to eradicate the memory of the Albion defeat, and they came up with the goods, with Tomas Poole and Liam Royles on target in a 2-1 victory. Next up was the long trip to unbeaten league leaders Pickering Town and, predictably perhaps, the Wrens found themselves trailing 3-0. But they refused to give up the fight, and pulled back two goals through Joshua Ross, a beautifully struck direct free kick from 25 yards, and Bryan Dakouri. Unfortunately it was too little too late, but they left North Yorkshire with plenty of credit. The following Tuesday night Mansfield Town brought a first team squad to Kirklington Road for a friendly fixture. The Stags normally visit in pre-season, but this year that fixture was only four days before they began the season proper, so they sent a squad of youngsters. However, Stags boss Steve Evans promised to send a first team at the first opportunity and fulfilled that promise on this occasion. Rainworth gave a very good account of themselves but conceded two goals in a
minute just after the midpoint of the first half, and although they had chances of their own they could not make the breakthrough, and lost 2-0 before over 200 fans. That game did serve as a useful preparation for the next big local derby against Worksop Town. A bumper crowd of 241, many from Worksop who have by far the biggest fan base in the division. But there were also a few more home fans in and, on what was designated Non-League Day, one or two Stags fans returned too rather than making the long journey to Colchester. Tomas Poole lit up the game with a superb angled 63rd minute strike which beat Tigers keeper Jason Alexander (son of the late and legendary Keith) all ends up. But more chances were missed in a dominant second half show, and in the fourth of five
added minutes they were made to pay when the visitors snatched a last gasp equaliser. It was home again a week later to Hemsworth, and after 75 goalless minutes Luke Walker came off the bench to hit two, before the visitors got a late goal back. As I write, the Wrens have three more October fixtures, at Athersley Recreation on 21st, the return game at Albion Sports on Wednesday 25th, and home to Thackley on 28th. November games (all Saturdays) are 4th, Parkgate away, 11th Hall Road Rangers home, 18th AFC Mansfield away, and 25th Barton Town home. Your support is welcomed at any or all of these matches, particularly the home games and that big date at Forest Town against AFC Mansfield.
