November 2018
Extra n-ice Christmas celebration THIS year’s Christmas celebrations in Mansfield will begin with the annual Big Switch On event for the town’s festive lights.
The family fun event in November will be followed by a month-long festive market and an ice rink, which will be launched in Mansfield for the first time in December. The Big Switch On, to be held on Sunday, 18th November, will feature a variety of music acts — including Mansfield-born professional opera singer Alexandra Stenson, with pupils from her old school, All Saints’ Catholic Academy; Gary Barlow tribute act Dan Hadfield and Nottinghamshire-based rock/pop duo Brotherhood — children’s entertainment, panto stars and Father Christmas before a laser show and fireworks display. The day, which marks the beginning of the month-long Christmas Market, will include a marching band and festive activities in the Four Seasons Shopping Centre.
Other festive events include Mansfield Palace Theatre’s pantomime, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Christmas artisan markets, late-night shopping, the Four Season’s grotto, a three-day Christmas market in Mansfield Museum, and more. The Mayor of Mansfield, Kate Allsop, said: “The Christmas lights switch-on event is well known for being a spectacular family show. This year it marks the start of an even bigger programme of entertainment. The ice rink will be a real spectacle and I hope people have a go.” The ice rink is funded by Mansfield District Council and sponsored by One Call. The month-long Christmas Market on West Gate is organised by Mansfield BID with financial support from the council. The Switch On event is organised and funded by the council with support from Mansfield 103.2 and the Four Seasons Shopping Centre. l FOR timing details of the switch on event go to page 16.
Grant suits clothing charity A CHARITY that provides emergency clothing, shoes and bedding from a new base in Sutton has received a £20,000 boost. Sharewear Clothing Scheme will use the money from the People’s Postcode Trust to buy a van and support staffing at its new Ashfield and Mansfield Children’s Referral Centre at New Cross Community Church, Sutton. Sharewear chief executive Louise Cooke said: “The need for clothing in the community continues to increase and we want to be able to grow with the demand and make our services even more efficient, more specific to client needs, and develop our network of services. “The unnecessary cost of clothing is an
expense that can be avoided when families are juggling the cost of food, rent, fuel and debt arrears. “There are plenty of clothes ‘in the system’ to go around and, with many people wearing clothes very few times, these can easily be re-used by those in need — at no cost. “With our clothes, people have been able to access job interviews and get back into work. Likewise, children have returned to the classroom after non-attendance due to lack of shoes, coats or uniform.” The charity, run entirely by volunteers and based in Nottingham, has clothed 3,000 people so far in 2018.

THE stars of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, this year’s festive pantomime at the Palace Theatre, Mansfield, gathered to launch the show as tickets sales continue to rise. Comedian Adam Moss is returning yet again to lead the fun and games, playing the jester Muddles. Adam, who made national headlines when he proposed to his now-wife, Karen, during a performance of Peter Pan at the theatre two years ago, said: “I love coming back and playing here. Everyone is so friendly and gets the pantomime feel.” Sue Holderness, who starred as Marlene in television’s Only Fools And Horses, is the Wicked Queen in the production, which starts on 1st December. The team — Karen Roberts, Amanda Budd, Bryani Russell-Hart, Brandan Staniland, Deanna Housley, Cheryl Hardy, Laura Webster and Shelbie Godfrey — raised £800 for Bobby’s Fund by completing a colour run at Uttoxeter Racecourse. The money went to four-year-old Bobby Marriott, of Sutton, who is fighting the cancer neuroblastoma. Bobby and his family visited the leisure centre, which previously gave the youngster and his friends a free play day, to receive the money. The family hoped to use the donation towards a family holiday. The fundraising Color Obstacle Rush combined the fun of powdered paint runs, the thrill of a tricky obstacle course and the atmosphere of a music festival. Paul Blakemore, general manager at the Everyone Active run centre, said: “It’s fantastic to see a team of colleagues and members come together to raise money for such a great fund. “The volume raised is outstanding and I’m sure it will offer Bobby’s Fund a huge amount of support.”
THE money is handed over to the Bobby’s family at the Lammas Leisure Centre, Sutton. Diane Marriott, Bobby’s mother, added: “All money that is raised goes towards us making memories together as a family. Every penny counts and we can’t thank those that have contributed to Bobby’s Fund enough since we set it up — and that includes the team at Lammas for their efforts.” To support Bobby’s Fund go to www.facebook.com/ bobbysfunds
Open days weekend success
THE Old Meeting House Unitarian Chapel and the Rev Maria Pap, a newly-appointed minister, welcomed many visitors during three action-packed days as part of the National Open Days Heritage Weekend. Opened by Kate Allsop, the first female mayor of Mansfield who gave an insight into her role, the theme of Women Firsts proved to be an interesting topic to commemorate the centenary of women gaining the right to vote. The Rev Derek Smith gave a series of short talks about six
important female firsts, including local education pioneer, Ethel Wainwright. She was the first female to gain a Freedom of the Borough award nationally. A silver casket containing her citation, loaned by Mansfield Museum, was alongside displays, including one that also gave an insight into the local suffragette/suffragist movements. Neil Fisher explained the story of the 300-year-old Grade II listed building. Age Concern, which uses the
separate schoolrooms each week, welcomed Ben Bradley, Mansfield MP, to its coffee morning and chapel members showed him around the exhibitions. They included photographs for Within A Mile Of Mansfield OMH, which had many visitors puzzling over the location of some of the places around town, and a wide range of paintings and artwork showing a variety of local talent. The free Sunday concert, given by The Singers (above), directed by Meryl Chambers, attracted a capacity audience to the chapel.

Abandoned dog is school therapy pet
A FORMER stray dog given a new home when it wandered in off the street has a new role — as a therapy pet at a school. Staffordshire bull terrier-cross Bella has started work as Shirebrook Academy’s official school dog. It is working alongside the school’s student welfare team, four days a week. Bella has her own school tie and official timetable. Her duties include offering a listening ear, acting as a reading buddy, and allowing herself to be fussed and stroked by students experiencing emotional distress. Bella belongs to the school’s safeguarding officer, Abi Grocutt, who said she had already achieved notable success, having helped students overcome panic attacks. Bella has also encouraged one student who is on the autism spectrum to become more communicative and express himself. Abi, also a mental health first aider at the school, saw how dogs can play a positive role in improving people’s mental health. She got the idea for introducing a dog to the academy after visiting a school where a dog was performing a similar function. After holding a trial run with her mother’s puppy, Basil, during Mental Health Awareness Week, Abi decided to bring Bella into the academy. She said she was thrilled by Bella’s success, particularly as Bella had overcome her own challenges, having been adopted by

Jobs fairs a boost Abi’s partner, Luke, when she was a stray and turned up on the doorstep of their home. Abi said: “Bella is very soft and loves being fussed, so she is very happy to sit with students when they are upset, which really helps to calm them down. “There are a lot of studies that look at animal therapy and the effect that dogs can have on young people’s social skills. “We are observing plenty of ways in which Bella is carrying out a therapeutic role. “It’s wonderful to see how the students who are feeling anxious respond so positively to her. “We have one ASD student who never used to communicate but, since spending time with Bella,
will now happily chat to me about what he has been up to. “It’s amazing to think that she is doing this work bearing in mind her history. “She has got a lovely temperament and is proving to be a great success at school.” The academy was one of the first in the country to recruit mental health first-aiders and Bella is one of several initiatives to deal with emotional and mental health issues pupils face. Academy principal Mark Cottingham said: “We take staff and student wellbeing very seriously at our school. It’s wonderful to hear how Bella has had such a positive impact in such a short time.”

TV show transforms life of Mansfield family A MANSFIELD mum and her wheelchair-bound son, who has complex needs, say a television makeover of their home has changed their lives.
Benita Wood was surprised by television gardener and presenter Alan Titchmarsh for ITV show Love Your Home And Garden. He sprung the news of the renovation of her home while she was at work at Yeoman Park Academy, Mansfield Woodhouse, where her son, Josh, 16, is a student. Benita was nominated to receive the makeover by a family friend because of her tireless support for Josh and other students at Yeoman Park, which is part of the Diverse Academies Learning Partnership. Josh, who is severely disabled, has limited vision, epilepsy and no speech. Using a wheelchair meant he could no longer access parts of the house and had not been able to get into the garden for ore than three years. The programme, the first in a new series, followed the renovation of their home, with improvements taking place throughout the downstairs of the property as well as in the garden. The kitchen and living areas were completely revamped, meaning Benita can now see Josh when she is in the kitchen. Equally as important was the work to give Josh access from the downstairs of the property into the garden, which was also totally transformed in a multi-sensory experience. This summer the teenager was able to have friends round to the house and get into the

Quakers launch community project A QUAKER community art project was launched at the Quaker Meeting House, Mansfield.
It involved friends at Mansfield Quaker Meeting and depicted in its different panels what the meeting meant to them. Yvonne Stonehewer, the initiator of the project, explained its inspiration, the way it developed and the meaning of the different panels Lynn Morris, of Journeymen
Theatre, formally named the artwork The 10.01. The title is based on a quote from Quaker Faith and Practice, which Mansfield Meeting uses to express its values: “Our life is love, and peace, and tenderness; and bearing one with another, and forgiving one another, and not laying accusations one against another; but
praying one for another, and helping one another up with a tender hand.” — Isaac Penington, 1667 (Quaker Faith & Practice 10.01). Journeymen Theatre also performed And The Beat Goes On, a celebration of peace activism and non-violent direct action, featuring Quakers from the 1600s through to the 21st Century.

Hitting the heights in memory of son A MANSFIELD man is climbing four major peaks in the shadow of five of the world’s six highest mountains in memory of his stepson — and to raise money for two charities.
Last year Darrin Reid reached the summit of Mera Peak in Nepal, raising £16,000 for Mansfield-based charity Hetty’s and also the Epilepsy Society. He is now attempting the 28-day Khumbu Climber expedition, organised by Jagged Globe, Sheffield, in aid of the two causes. The peaks are in the shadow of Mount Everest (8,848metres high), Kangchenjunga (8,586metres), Lhotse (8,516metres), Makalu (8,463metres) and Cho Oyu (8,201metres). Darrin’s mammoth effort is in memory of his step-son, Marcus Ball, who died in December 2016, four days before his 26th birthday. Marcus, who was diagnosed with epilepsy, was a student at the University of Leeds and hoped to become a professor. Darrin, who started his trek and climb in October, said he was supporting the Epilepsy Society because it provided the family, including Darrin’s wife, Karen, with much-needed support and guidance. He said: “This has had a truly and lasting devastating effect on our other children, his girlfriend, family and friends. “As each day, week, month and now year passes, the pain and reality of his loss grows more real.
Remembering little Emily A FUN day at St Philip Neri School, Mansfield, marked the 10th anniversary of the Emily Harris Foundation and collected £1,000 for the neonatal unit at King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton. The foundation, which has raised more than £100,000, was set up after Emily died following a fivemonth battle with a rare heart condition. Her family created the foundation to support the unit after its oustanding care of their baby daughter.

Caring pupil DARRIN REID on his successful fundraising climb last year. “Marcus was an incredibly bright, intelligent young man with his whole life ahead of him, with many plans, ideas and aspirations. “He was an adventurer and a thrillseeker, with wit, charm and charisma like no other. “Following the success of reaching the summit of Mera Peak last October and raising an incredible £16,000 for our two chosen charities, I want to continue the challenge in memory of Marcus — and as a testament to his short but full life.” Darrin is also supporting Hetty’s, based on Woodhouse Road, Mansfield, which offers confidential support, enabling families to recover from the effects of their loved ones’ drug and alcohol misuse. He said: “It supports families
throughout Nottinghamshire affected by addiction — through kinship care, individual one-toone support, peer-support groups, holistic therapy, mediation and bereavement counselling. “I encountered Hetty’s following the death of my father in 2011, when Hetty’s offered us significant support when we needed it most. “Since then my wife has been actively involved with them on a volunteer basis. “Because of the support we received we wanted to offer something back. “Our fundraising will make a significant difference to this small but very personal charity.” lTO make a donation go to https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ DarrinReid

CHILDREN from Asquith Primary School, Mansfield, went back in time when Four Seasons Shopping Centre’s B Club visited for a workshop journey through history. Children learnt about the first world war, Remembrance Day and the significance of poppies. Asquith youngsters helped to create a huge poppy mural made of their own designs, which will go on display in The Hive at the shopping centre in commemoration of Armistice Day. Rebekah O’Neill, Four Seasons manager, said: “Since we launched our newly-themed B Club, the activities have proved to be popular, with both children and parents. Each season brings a combination of educational topics and exciting things to keep little ones fascinated.” Asquith teacher Shauna Thomas added: “Children in years 3 and 4 loved learning about the meaning behind poppies of remembrance.” l ONCE Upon A Time B Club on Sunday, 18th November will be a workshop where children can join Snow White in decorating their own red toffee apple to take home, as well as other magical activities. All B Club events take place on the mall in the Four Seasons on the specified dates, from 11am until 3pm. Ashley, who has just graduated from the BA (Hons) in Media Makeup and Hair with Special Effects at the Northern School of Creative Industries, Bradford, spoke about how he trained as a hairdresser and moved on to studying media make-up. Ashley described the many areas of the industry that he has gained experience in, from working on theatrical make-up and editorial photoshoots to experience as an assistant at Cosmopolitan magazine, working at London and Manchester fashion weeks.
The 22-year-old has scooped a number of sector awards, including winning the 2016 Professional Beauty Warpaint Photographic Nailart competition and the 2015 Blackpool National Hairdressers’ Federation It’s A Drag competition.
SEXions advisor Phil Erdley gave advice to IT students Joseph Stain (left) and Owen Shaw (right), who tried ‘beer goggles’ that simulate the effects of being drunk.
Students asked Ashley questions about his career and training before he set them a creative challenge to put their make-up artistry skills to the test on the theme of an editorial photoshoot.
Health matters
Ashley said: “I’ve always been passionate about creative make-up and special effects, and I’m always aiming to understand techniques better. “Editorial make-up, which the students tried out, can take many different forms and be creative, beautiful or as extreme as you wish. “I love to see make-up that tells a story and makes you feel something as you look at the colours and textures. “The students put together some

make-up. Ashley’s visit has given me plenty of ideas and career inspiration. I’m going to do the Level 3 course next and then hopefully move into industry.”
Students speak up in support of colleges POLITICS students from the college headed to the capital to demand fairer funding for further education (FE). They were among thousands of learners, staff and leaders from across the country who came together in London to take part in a march on Parliament. It was followed by a packed rally. The national day of lobbying took place during Colleges Week — part of the Love Colleges campaign by the Association of Colleges (AoC) and several education unions. It is aimed at highlighting the great work that goes on in FE institutions, while calling on government for better investment and fairer pay. This comes after analysis by the AoC revealed that by 2019 funding for colleges would have been cut by almost 30% over the last decade.
After the march, West Notts students, accompanied by staff and the college’s Students’ Union president, Robyn Hodgson, met Mansfield MP Ben Bradley in Westminster to have their say and enlist his support. Robyn said: “Our students were keen to hear Ben’s views on how colleges are funded compared to schools and universities. It was good to see students engaging with Ben and voicing opinions.” Commenting on the national rally, she added: “To see so many students in one place, passionately speaking out about their beliefs, was fantastic.” AoC chief executive David Hughes said: “Every day colleges like West Notts provide a world-class education and transform the lives of millions of people. However, if we want a world-class education system we need to properly invest in it.”

Young people help launch new centre YOUNG people have fundraised and helped to design the new-look Gara Young People’s Centre, Forest Town.
Nottinghamshire County Council has completed a refurbishment of the centre, previously known as The Garrage YPC, on Garibaldi Road. It was officially opened by Coun Tracey Taylor, vice-chairman of the council’s children and young people’s committee. Chloe Smith and other teenagers who had a major say in the redesign of the building were also at the event. Youth centre worker Zoe Taylor, said: “Chloe became part of the centre’s youth management committee and together with two other young people decided we needed to make changes to the youth club. “She became instrumental in contacting the head of service, county councillors and local district councillors to try to raise funds to have a refurbishment of the youth club.” Young people organised a litter pick, cake bake sale and jumble sales, and local county councillors provided funding to support an arts project on the outside of the centre. Coun Taylor, who attended the cake sale last year, said: “Chloe has clearly grown as a person and found the youth service has been a positive influence for her development. “Together with her peers and

Despite that, they kept on with the refurbishment project. A memorial board is now in place at the new-look centre for the young man. Chloe, 17, who lives nearby, said:

“It has taken a long time and been hard work to get to this point. “There have been times when I doubted the refurbishment would actually happen, but here it is — and it’s pretty impressive.” Young people picked colour schemes, types of kitchen equipment, flooring and made changes to initial building design. They developed artwork plans and a graffiti artist worked with the young people to create graffiti boards to decorate youth club walls. The project was supported by the council’s property team and designed and delivered by Arc Partnership, a joint venture between the council and Scape Group.

Celebrating the town’s MANSFIELD couple Tony and June Harvey have notched up a hat-trick of gardening wins.
They found success in Mansfield District Council’s Best Kept Garden competition, taking the top prize for three successive years. The couple’s colourful floral displays, topiary, and environmentally-friendly approach to gardening at their home on the Grange Farm Estate impressed the judges in the Mansfield District Council-sponsored competition. The couple’s garden was described as absolutely fantastic. Judges said: “The planting throughout was a pleasure to see. “From the topiary on the front, to the plants as you walk through the tropically-planted carport into the back garden, (they) were all truly excellent. “Every nook and cranny is planted, creating interest throughout the garden.” The competition is held annually to encourage people in the district to care for their gardens and help to make Mansfield a greener and more pleasant place to live. Coun Andrew Tristram, portfolio holder for the environment and wellbeing, said:
“Well done to all those who took part in this year’s competition. “There were some impressive entries, which gave the judges a difficult job. “We had two very worthy winners in Mr and Mrs Harvey, who have shown for three years that their dedication and green fingers are the seeds of their success.” The Silver Gilt Award, sponsored by Mansfield District Council,

Community support from The Mansfield pTHE Amazon Breast Cancer Support Group, based at King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton, has thanked Stanton Hill Co-op store manager Tracy and the staff at local Co-op stores who ran a charity stall (above) at Ashfield Gala on the Healdswood Recreation Ground, Skegby. They raised £370, which will be used by the Amazons to benefit local breast cancer patients. An Amazons spokesman said: “Well done to them and the supporters and organisers of the gala.” pTHE support group marked Breast Cancer
Awareness Month by holding an annual tombola and awareness stand in the Idlewells Shopping Centre, Sutton. The charity handed out free newsletters, information sheets, free books, and knitted pink flower badges. Pink ribbon badges and wristbands were also sold as the event raised £251. A spokesman for the Amazons thanked those who helped on the day and donated prizes, Lily’s Cards, and staff at the Idlewells.
Checking out support for Amazons A CHARITY has received a donation of £1,000 from The Mansfield Building Society’s Community Support Scheme to help fund a secure tool shed and maintenance area for tools and machinery. Ex-Hawkind star’s Diamond date Pay what you want Bainbridge and former Hawkwind guitarist Jerry Richards, will be performing a selection of the late Robert Calvert’s songs as part of their set at The Diamond, Sutton, on Sunday, 11th November. They will also showcase material from their recent back catalogue and songs from the new studio
album, Brave New World, which was released at the end of October. This follows the band’s critically acclaimed 2017 album, Six, which charted at number 35 in the official UK top 40 rock chart. The show features a light show created for the band by veteran lighting designer Dave Johnson.
The revamped play area, which explores the ages, from the Tudors through to Shakespeare, has been designed for children aged three and above. It includes historical details associated with past kings, queens and other important figures. These include an Edward VI-inspired oversized throne, which was designed following research into the boy king, and a ship-themed climbing frame reflecting the age of pirates and
seafaring that took place under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. A pathway leads to the Globe amphitheatre opposite a family refreshment area. The park is free and the adventure playground features tunnels and netting, inspired by the priest holes of King Henry VIII’s reign. These surround a large climbing rock.
The changes have been developed by Nottinghamshire County Council and Parkwood Outdoors. Chairman of the council’s Communicates and Place Committee, Coun John Cottee, said: “Alongside an adventure golf experience opened in the summer, the playground bolsters what the park has to offer younger visitors.”
LOCAL historian Denis Hill is to give a lecture marathon in support of Children In Need. Historic Mansfield, an illustrated set of five lectures on 17th November, will explore the history of the town. The event at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
Southridge Drive, Mansfield, starts at 11am. The lectures are free, but a donation for charity is requested. The lectures are: Water Mills Of Mansfield (11am), Victorian Mansfield (1pm), Mansfield Miscellany (3pm), Historic Mansfield Today (5pm) and Early
History Of Mansfield (7pm). Denis said the final lecture was a memorial to a soldier who wrote the Early History Of Mansfield before he died in the second world war. Email Denis Hill at denishill1066@gmail.com for further details.

THE new programme of low-cost and pay-what-you-can theatre shows at the Old Library, Mansfield, is continuing. The Affordable Theatre programme has been developed by the Inspire Youth Arts team. It concludes on a historical note as Pantaloons presents its new verse adaption of the most epic journey of all time, The Odyssey (14th March) and award-winning playwright Kevin Fegan’s Bess – The Commoner Queen (21st March) tells the story of survival and business success in the brutal world of Elizabethan politics as witnessed by Bess of Hardwick Hall. It gives the public the opportunity to share information, memories, photos and knowledge about Mansfield and the local communities, both as they are today and how they were in the past. If you are interested in visiting the site, go to www. ourmansfieldandarea.org.uk. The site has just been relaunched after a major upgrade. Liz Weston, museum curator, said: “If you have never been on it or haven’t been on for a while, please take the time to have a look and add some of your own memories. “This month we want to showcase one of our newly-added pages, which you will find at the bottom of the home page of the website. “This intriguing image of Pierrot clowns has some helpful information handwritten on the back. “It says: ‘St Alban’s Church Hall
after we had raised stage and built store underneath.’ “This was the church hall at Forest Town and our contributor knows that it is possible that Muriel Baylis is on the photograph. “The photo was taken by LYLE, Photographer, Handley
Arcade, Mansfield, Notts. Phone 1646. “So we want to know if anyone knows anything more about the photograph, about the people, what the occasion was or whether you know more about the photographer.
“Any help will be much appreciated.” Anyone who can help should contact the museum. For more interesting stories from Mansfield and the surrounding area, visit www. ourmansfieldandarea.org.uk

Poetry scene is thriving
Y
OU may have noticed a gradual increase in the use of poetry as a means of promotion and advertising.
For example, the Nationwide Building Society is taking a poetic approach in its recent campaign to capture the senses and minds of consumers. The play on words and the natural rhythms are unmistakably a pleasant and innovative change from alternative methods of advertising. For those of you who feel that poetry is an acquired taste and something you left behind at school, I urge you to think again. Remember the simple rhythms of nursery rhymes that we enjoyed as children and how they became imprinted in our young minds? Those same simple poems are recited by every generation. The poetry scene in Nottinghamshire is thriving, driven by a diverse range of styles. For the past two years, the Nottingham Poetry Festival has continued to pack out a variety of venues across the region. The two-week event brings together talented poets to showcase their personal verve and panache. The Inspire Poetry Festival 2018 in late September saw events at several venues, including Mansfield Central Library and The Old Library Mansfield. I was able to attend The Old Library event and also secured tickets to see Jo Bell, known for her adverts with the Nationwide poetry, and Georgina Wilding, Nottingham’s first young poet laureate at The Poetry Café, Worksop.

IN the fifth of her regular columns for the NewsJournal, Mansfield Woodhouse author K. L. Loveley (right) turns her spotlight on to poetry. Right, she is pictured (centre) with poets Jo Bell and Georgina Wilding. Both of the events were inspirational for me. I had the pleasure of meeting Georgina and Jo, who kindly invited me to read one of my poems from Chameleon Days. It was a great privilege to read publically from my own collection. In addition, I was invited to Mansfield Woodhouse Library to give a talk about well-being and the benefits of reading. The library was a focal point of my young life, so it was a dream come true. Nottingham is well known for its famous poets, two of whom I have mentioned in previous reports. However, this month, I want to draw your attention (right) to D. H. Lawrence’s well-known poem, The Collier’s Wife. lMY own collection of poetry,
Chameleon Days, illustrated by Elvina Dulac, a mixed media artist from Nottingham, will soon be available to buy. Published by The Globeflower Agency, the collection, which spans 20 years of my life, is an eclectic mix of styles that reflect the path of life.

The Collier’s Wife by D.H. Lawrence Somebody’s knockin’ at th’ door Mother, come down an’ see! — I’s think it’s nobbut, a beggar; Say I’m busy.
Out o’ my way, childt! dear o’ me, wheer ‘Ave I put ‘is clean stockin’s an’ shirt? Goodness knows if they’ll be able To take off ‘is pit-dirt!
It’s not a beggar, mother; hark How ‘ard ‘e knocks! — Eh, tha’rt a mard-arsed kid, ‘E’ll gie thee socks!
An’ what a moan ‘e’ll make! there niver Was such a man for a fuss If anything ailed ‘im; at any rate I shan’t ‘ave ‘im to nuss.
Shout an’ ax what ‘e wants, I canna come down. — ‘E says, is it Arthur Holliday’s? — Say Yes, tha clown.
I do ‘ope as it’s not so very bad! Eh, what a shame it seems As some should ha’e hardly a smite o’ trouble An’ others ‘as reams!
‘E says: Tell your mother as ‘er mester’s Got hurt i’ th’ pit — — What? Oh my Sirs, ‘e never says that, That’s not it! Come out o’ th’ way an’ let me see! Eh, there’s no peace! An’ stop thy scraightin’, childt, Do shut thy face! “ Your mester’s ‘ad a accident An’ they ta’ein’ ‘im i’ th’ ambulance Ter Nottingham. “ — Eh dear o’ me, If ‘e’s not a man for mischance! Wheer’s ‘e hurt this time, lad? — I dunna know, They on’y towd me it wor bad — It would be so!
It’s a shame as ‘e should be knocked about Like this, I’m sure it is! ‘E’s ‘ad twenty accidents, if ‘e’s ‘ad one; Owt bad, an’ it’s his! There’s one thing, we s’ll ‘ave a peaceful ‘ouse f’r a bit, Thank heaven for a peaceful house! An’ there’s compensation, sin’ its accident. An’ club-money — I won’t growse. An’ a fork an’ a spoon ‘e’ll want — an’ what else? I s’ll never catch that train! What a traipse it is, if a man gets hurt! I sh’d think ‘e’ll get right again.

Rainbows is the only hospice for children and young people with life-limiting conditions in the East Midlands, providing palliative care and support for them and their families. lABOVE: The club’s presidents, Jean Moulson (left) and Lynda Moor (right) presented a further £127 to Paula (centre), bringing the total donated by the club this year to £654.
A POPPY display was put up in Forest Town Methodist Church garden. It was a joint venture by people from the church and members of the community. Young and older people joined in, knitting crocheting and sewing poppies out of net and material. Many people helped to tie poppies on to the netting and Coun
Martin Wright gave a donation towards the cost. Bunting with a We Will Remember Them message added to the display that will complement the large poppies Forest Town British Legion is placing on lamp posts in the village. A spokesman for those behind the display said Forest Town was proud to remember.
Fundraising for cancer fund at pub A COMMUNITY fundraising day at The White Swan pub, Pleasley, raised more than £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Licensees Stuart and David Taylor Day, who took over the pub in February, having worked with Admiral Taverns for six years, are strong supporters of the charity. A traditional fete featured bake stalls, bric-a-brac, hook-a-duck competitions and a barbecue. The fundraising continued into the evening with a live auction, when prizes included a signed Mansfield Town Football Club ball that raised £100. Yorkshire singer Lee Kirmen also performed. Further fundraising initiatives are planned at The White Swan, where David and Stuart have brought the pub’s beer garden back to life after a 10-year period of non-use. Stuart and David said: “We are thrilled to have raised such a significant amount for Macmillan. It was an

Focus On Home & Garden

November gardening with Timmermans Well, I don’t know about you guys but I have got a lot of calories to burn off thanks to a bumper Halloween trick or treat haul, which was a surprise really as I wasn’t even dressed in a costume…must be something about nipping to the shops for a pint of milk in a dressing gown, a pair of bright green flip flops and a five o’clock shadow rivalling that of a Grizzly bear that just makes people run away in terror and throw copious amounts of fun sized chocolate bars at you. I’ll have to remember that for next year. Anyway, I digress….let’s get to it shall we. Believe it or not, there is indeed still time to be planting bulbs out into your garden if you are still wanting a few surprise fireworks in the springtime. Daffodils, Tulips and hyacinths can all still be planted out now and in the case of Tulips, delaying their planting until November can benefit them as it lessens the chances of a Fungal infection known as Tulip fire which can cause brown, distorted leaves in the Spring. If you have been growing Dahlias in your garden this year and are very keen to keep them for many years to come now is the time to lift and store their delicate tuberous roots for replanting after Winter. Of course, if you do happen to live in an area that gets very little frost or waterlogged ground over the coldest of months then you can sometimes get away with leaving the Dahlias in the ground and simply applying a thick layer of mulch over them, but it is a more risky venture. To lift the

tubers, simply wait for the plants to turn a yellowy brown colour, which indicates that the nutrients from them have been stored back into the roots, then cut this foliage off and carefully dig the roots out of the soil, wash off any excess dirt and then leave to dry for a few days (preferably hung upside down so that excess moisture can seep away from the roots and out of the stem). Once dry, you can then place the tubers into pots or boxes and cover with dry compost. Keep these in a frost free greenhouse or shed. Any Autumn fruiting trees you may have in your garden such as apples can now be pruned once you have had your fill of fruits. Pruning can be done anytime between now and late Jan/early feb. Start with removing any dead, damaged or diseased wood and then move onto more delicate pruning from there. Also, apply greasebands or greasepaint to the trunks of fruit trees to help prevent pests from making their way from the ground up into the precious canopy where they can cause harm. And as always, enjoy your garden and have a fantastic bonfire night with plenty of toffee apples and sparklers. And if you are having a bonfire with all the garden debris that you have been collecting, please check beneath it for any wildlife that may be using it as a shelter before lighting.

First five-star tattoo On the ball for artist for Mansfield mental health
MANSFIELD Town Football In The Community is tackling mental health issues through community programmes for all ages. It is working with many primary schools through the Premier League Primary Stars initiative, which Duncan White, the head of Forest Town’s Holly Primary School, said helped children to form friendships. “Football In The Community provides children with a high-quality activity, which engages them in their learning. “It gives them the confidence and skills to speak out and seek assistance if required. “The staff are sensitive to our needs and the children’s needs. The different approach gives children confidence to engage in conversations, which can sometimes be the toughest step for a child who is suffering.” Mansfield Town Football In The Community has also launched a dementia group, aimed at tackling isolation and loneliness. It meets every Friday and among those attending is the club’s oldest living player, Walter Edwards. The Football In The Community project also focuses on a range of activities, including disability sport, girls’ football and walking football. l FOR further information go to www. mansfield townfitc.net or call 01623 656920.
Over-50s club wants more members AN over-50s club is appealing for new members. The group meets in Bilsthorpe Miners’ Welfare on Wednesdays, from 1pm to 4pm. A spokesman said: “Come and make new friends and enjoy music, dancing, a quiz, games, a raffle and bingo. Refreshments are included and everyone is welcome.” For more information call 01623 871185.
A TATTOO studio in Mansfield has become the first in the area to be registered with a new county-wide registration scheme — and has achieved the top rating of five stars.
Helen Molloy, a tattoo artist for two years, has been running her own business, Trinity Ink, from her home on Eakring Road for the past four months. She said: “I feel the star rating gives the customer a better opportunity to make an informed decision about where they would like to be tattooed. “I decided to apply because I thought it was important to set a high standard when it comes to cleanliness, hygiene and safety, due to it being a home studio. “In the past home studios have been frowned upon but, by setting high standards, I feel that clients can feel reassured when they visit. “No customer should have health concerns when getting a tattoo.” Other businesses that use needles and blades are being urged to sign up to the Nottinghamshire Hygiene Accreditation Scheme, which is being co-ordinated by local authorities across the county that are responsible for licensing tattoo, body piercing and beauty treatment businesses. The voluntary scheme aims to improve hygiene and safety standards and is part of a wider strategy by Mansfield District Council to make the district a safer place to live, work and visit and improve the wellbeing of its citizens.
It supplements the inspections of tattoo studios that are carried out by the council as part of the required licensing process to ensure a minimum standard of hygiene is achieved. Operating in a similar way to the national food hygiene scheme for restaurants, it costs £120 to join and for the initial inspection, and £60 for a re-inspection and re-rating. The process of becoming rated took Helen about two weeks from application to being accredited. “The inspection itself took about an hour and was really informative,” she said. “Even though I got five stars I learned a lot about other techniques and practices, which I found very helpful. “I was a bit nervous as this was

my first business and I wanted to break the stigma that surrounds home studios. “I am very pleased to achieve five stars, which demonstrates to the customer that they can be tattooed in a clean and hygienic environment. I was proud to be called clinical when I had the inspection. “Being a tattoo artist is something I have always wanted to do since I was very young. “I love art and drawing and this profession offers opportunities for people to express their artistic side. I like that it also gives customers the freedom to express themselves, however they like.” Businesses interested in the scheme can contact environmental health at Mansfield District Council on 01623 463492 for more information.
Keeping the elderly more independent NOTTINGHAMSHIRE County Council has been awarded NHS Digital funding to create an early warning system to identify residents aged over 65 at most risk of losing their independence. The £50,000 funding will be used to start developing an IT programme to detect older people with health conditions that make them at greater risk of needing long-term care. The programme will use data available to health and social services. Long-term conditions, such as diabetes, dementia and limited mobility, will be considered alongside life events such as a fall, death of a loved one or other issues such as limited social engagement and living alone. The project will look at the potential for the information to identify people who are unknown to social care. Once identified they can then be referred to social care earlier for extra care and support to prevent a loss of independence. The council is one of five to be awarded the funding. Coun Stuart Wallace, chairman of the council’s Adult Social Care and Public Health Committee, said: “This funding will help us target people most at risk to help prevent them losing their independence and reduce their chances of needing ongoing care.”

Praise for students at awards presentations
Alpha Ads Lifestyle & Beauty
A CONCERT preceded the awards ceremony of The Treloyhan School Of Speech And Drama at Bethel Church, Mansfield.
A large audience of parents and friends watched students perform a selection of verse speaking, reading, acting and scenes from Shakespeare. The guest of honour was Melanie Evans, of Wynndale Primary School, who has entered students in the Mansfield Music And Drama Festival for many years. She congratulated the concert students on their ability to create a presence on stage and communicate with the audience. The principal of the school, Ann Jones, announced that last December students had aided Trinity College London by working on a proposed new syllabus for communication skills. The December Associated Schools Amateur Drama Awards (ASADA) examinations, postponed due to heavy falls of snow, were held in the spring half-term. Ann said she was sad to announce that examiner Miss Patricia James had recently died, although medal examinations would continue with the help of two new examiners. In March, most students took part in the Mansfield Music And Drama Festival, gaining several trophies. In July, examination sessions were held for ASADA medals, Trinity College Speech And Drama, and Victoria College diplomas. A charity concert will be held at Henley Hall, St Mark’s Church, Mansfield, on Sunday, 2nd December. School awards were presented to those making an outstanding effort during the year — Junior Trophy: Elizabeth Hardy Griffiths. Senior

Celebrating the best BUSINESSES in Mansfield town centre were rewarded for their commitment to delivering high levels of customer service.
Mansfield Business Improvement District (BID invited all businesses in its area to take part in an annual awards scheme. Companies were visited by mystery shoppers from an independent consultant. They were scored against a strict criteria, with the results giving an overall score that equated to a bronze, silver, gold or platinum ranking. The rankings were revealed to 72 businesses at a presentation evening, supported by Mansfield Building Society, at Mansfield Library. For the first time in the awards scheme’s five-year history, there were no businesses at bronze level. Claiming silver were Mansfield Bus Station Service Desk, Futures, Ground Zero, Megabites Cafe, Poundbakery, Quality Shoe Repairs, The Garrison, The Green Dragon, and Vinyl Lounge. Gold winners were 5 Star Tanning Lounge, Ann Summers, Barclays Bank, Bling Boutique, Booth Discount Furniture, Boots, Capo Lounge, Dorothy Perkins, Easy Barber, Everyday Loans, FA Henshaw, Games Emporium, Handley Arcade Antiques, Harmony Health, Just 4 Mortgages, KH Hair, Mansfield Museum, Mansfield Shoe Repairs, Moss
CLOCKWISE, from above, platinum award winners Bonmarche, Collections, Four Seasons Service Desk, Fidler & Pepper and Duffy Opticians. & Co, Music Scene, Need 2 View, Quiz, Sally Twinkles, Select, Superdrug, Swintons, The Beauty Chain, The Courthouse, The Mangrove, The Palace Theatre, The Shiny Spoon, The Village Activity Centre, and Wood Cafe. Businesses received a certificate and a report of the scoring. They could also have one-to-one meetings with the authors of the report. BID chief executive Nikki Rolls, who hosted the event,
said: “Customer service is what helps to bring people back into our businesses and our town centre, so I cannot emphasise just how important it is to get it right. “It was so pleasing to see that none of the participants got a bronze award, as it shows there are high levels of customer service being offered by our businesses.” Mystery shoppers from Douglas Stafford Global visited businesses and scored them on criteria such as presentation, appearance, products, pricing and knowledge of the area. There were a number of highlights in the scoring, including 15 top performers maintaining their 100 per cent score, 14 improving their scores, and nine new locations gaining 90 per cent or more. A spokesman for the organisers added: “Overall, every open location had polite conversation with the mystery shopper, but one issue that needed improvement was upselling.”

Fundraising walking footballers are praised
TWO teams from Mansfield Senior Reds were among walking footballers (above) who took part in a Derbyshire County FA tournament that raised £314 for children and young adults with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions.
The event in aid of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, North Anston, was held at Belper Leisure Centre. There were also teams from Alfreton, Derby County Community Trust, Barmy Army, Chesterfield, Belper and Ashbourne.
Derbyshire County FA’s first charity walking football tournament saw money raised through entry fees and fines. Angie Harper, football development officer for Derbyshire County FA, said: “We hope to make it a regular event.”
Skating to success at international event A YOUNG ice-skater delivered a personal best performance to claim a podium finish at the Lee Valley Skate Southern Club International tournament. Paige Elliott, 10, who skates at Lammas Leisure Centre, Sutton, was third and also gained the second-highest technical score of the competition in London — missing out on the highest score by 0.01 points. She gave a fine performance to the Greatest Showman’s hit track Million Dreams. Paige prepared for the event by training four times per week with her coach, Jamie Geere, at the leisure centre, which is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Ashfield District Council. She has been training at the site for the past two years. The young skater also competed in the national Young Stars Sheffield 2018
competition, where she claimed the special recognition and talent identified awards from the National Ice Skating Association (NISA). She has now become part of NISA’s Young Stars national development programme. Paige’s mother, Keliegh Spafford, said: “We are incredibly proud of Paige and her recent success. “She thoroughly enjoys figure skating and she is very passionate about the sport.
Lucy Rathbone, Bluebell Wood community fundraiser, said: “It was a fantastic day. The money raised will make a difference to families across the region, helping them to make special memories, whether they have days, months or years left together.”
World title for the history boys MANSFIELD brothers Ben and Tom Birchall have won the FIM Sidecar World Championships for a second successive year. The Mitchells of Mansfield-backed Birchall Racing team won in Oschersleben, Germany, having entered the final round of the season one point behind Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes. They made a great start from the front of the grid and entered the first series of corners in the lead. Using his skill and experience, Ben steered the Yamaha-powered machine flawlessly all the way to the chequered flag and was never headed by the chasing outfits. It was the brothers third world title and they became the first team to win both back-to-back world and TT titles in the same two years.
Ben said: “I can’t believe this has happened. We had a great year — the TT was incredible but a run of bad luck had put us a long way behind in the world championship chase. “Everyone told me to never give up, and so we fought hard every single mile right to that final flag in Germany. “Tim suffered some bad luck in those final two rounds, but that only matched what we had to go through at the beginning of the season.”
“We are so proud of how hard she works on and off the ice, and her determination to meet her own goals.” Jamie said: “Paige is an absolute pleasure to coach. She works incredibly hard on and off the ice with her training. “Paige continues to progress and it shows in her recent success. “I’m incredibly proud of her. She is an inspiration to all young athletes.”
