MP secures £18 million extra funding for A614 MARK Spencer, the Member of Parliament for Sherwood, has secured £18 million of additional funding for the A614 corridor. Discussing his campaign to get improvements to the A614, MP Mark Spencer said; “Following several weeks of meetings, lobbying and applying pressure about the A614, I’m incredibly pleased to say that the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced in October that Nottinghamshire County Council will receive £18 million of new funding under the Major Road Network scheme, for the County Council to spend on safety improvements along the A614 Corridor.”
“This is a hugely positive step forward for the campaign, but work doesn’t stop here – we need to make sure that we apply as much pressure as possible on both the County Council and the Government to make sure they deliver.” “I’ll continue to do this, but the more names I get on my petition for these safety improvements, the louder the argument becomes. So do please get your friends, family or anyone you know who uses the A614 to spread the word and sign the petition.” If you would like to keep up to date with Mark’s A614 campaign, sign his petition or to receive his fortnightly newsletter, please visit: https://www.markspencer.org.uk/
Traditional family farm shop opens in Ravenshead
Farming has been in the Voce family for generations. They’ve been farming in Ravenshead since the 1980s when the family farming business relocated there from Annesley. They certainly know their onions, or I should say their beef, all of the beef available in the new shop is home reared and the bakery goods are home made too.
The new venture is the brainchild of the next generation of Voce’s and an obvious next step for enterprising Grandson Craig. The family are absolutely delighted by the reception the shop has received. Craig said, “We didn’t expect it to take off quite as quickly as it has, we’re obviously thrilled to bits”. With a good range of produce, from the freshest fruit and vegetables to the dairy and fresh Deli counters; not forgetting the mouth-watering homemade pies on offer - you certainly won’t be disappointed. It really is a traditional old style family butcher, where you can pick up everything you need to compliment your family roast. The store is located on Main Road in Ravenshead,
a convenient spot for the residents of Ravenshead and perfect for passers-by. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you plan a shopping trip there, and as an added bonus don’t forget to take the 5% off voucher, on page 18, with you! It’s valid on instore purchases and Christmas orders, until the 30th November 2018. At our Meeting on Wednesday, 19th September, Members renewed their Annual Membership, which is good value at £5 per household per annum. This was followed by an interesting, illustrated talk, given by Peter Jones and Sue Wilson, entitled from “From Penguins to Polar Bears”, which chronicled their travels in Antarctica, the Arctic, The Falkland Islands and South-Georgia and featured some stunning photography of glaciers, many varieties of penguins, other seabirds and animals and some lovely studies of alpine plants.
Vice-chairman, Ian Roberts gave a vote-ofthanks and the raffle was then drawn with the first prizewinner being Muriel Haggart. Our next Meeting will be on Wednesday, 21st November at 7.30 pm in the Lounge at Bilsthorpe Welfare (speaker TBA). Visitors and new Members are most welcome.
Another busy few weeks. On Friday, 14th September, we were pleased to take part in a “Golden Years” event at Blidworth Welfare, organised by Mark Spencer M.P. On Saturday, 15th September, we had some sales tables at Bilsthorpe “Busy Bees” W.I. Tabletop Sale and raised £80 for our group funds. We wish to thank everyone who supported us at both these events. On Thursday, 27th September, we welcomed our friends from Hucknall Tourist Regeneration for their final Group Visit of the season and on Tuesday evening, 2nd October, we were pleased to have a visit from thirty Bilsthorpe Cubs and their Leaders. We are now on Winter Opening Hours of 11.00 am – 3.00 pm on two days a week,
Sundays and Wednesdays but are pleased to open up on other days or evenings for Group Visits by appointment and we also give talks to local organisations. Blidworth Bengals Football Club “Providing football opportunities for children in and around the village of Blidworth.” Welcome to the introduction of Blidworth Bengals Football Club, A relatively new club that has just entered into its 3rd season of existence and although young in football terms participation numbers are growing month upon month seeing the club provide football for over 100 children in and around the village of Blidworth. The club was set up in April 2016 to provide a feel good factor of something its members and the local community can be proud to feel apart off, Over the past 2 years the club has engaged in local events and also hosts its own fundraisers to help with the continuing costs that faces grassroots football teams face today, Actively around within the local community children associated with “The Bengals” can be seen through their striking orange and black kits and tracksuits prowling around the local areas with pride. The club has expanded quickly over a short period of time and now train’s children from the age of three to twelve but each year gains more new teams to compete within the local leagues of either the Mansfield Kick Start League or the Nottingham Young Elizabethan League. There has been an influx of young talent who has joined the clubs “Baby Bengals” section where children from the ages of 3-5 years are taught the fundamentals of football through their FA Qualified Level 2 coach, after graduating from “Baby Bengals” the children then join the main club and become the new U7s team that compete within the leagues. Through training with the children from a young age the club is then offering a pathway into competitive football which is proving a very sustainable option for the future development of the club and its players. “Our mission is to provide progressive coaching to children who we come into contact with along with offering a fun and enjoyable football experience within the foundation phase” -Daniel Brickles Club Chairman
The club in its short spell has already achieved lots of success within the local leagues through developing good quality players and teams and also has a player pathway to academy sides. Last season saw the first player to leave and sign for Sheffield United Academy along with a further 3 players to who were invited to continue their development through the Sheffield United Development Centre alongside their Bengals training. This has continued again this season and we hope for more of our players to develop into professional players one day. The club will continue to engage with the local community and look at all options to keep on providing quality coaching to all the children who we come into contact with, we shall be posting regular updates of activities and progress throughout regular issues of The Sherwood Newspaper and i thank you for taking the time to learn about our story. Regards- Blidworth Bengals FC “Lets Roar!” Upcoming Events: Our Children’s Halloween Disco proved very popular last year and we shall be hosting another one this year on Sunday 28th October 2018 at the Sir John Cockle pub

November gardening with Timmermans Well, I don’t know about you guys but I have got a lot of calories to burn off thanks to a bumper Halloween trick or treat haul, which was a surprise really as I wasn’t even dressed in a costume…must be something about nipping to the shops for a pint of milk in a dressing gown, a pair of bright green flip flops and a five o’clock shadow rivalling that of a Grizzly bear that just makes people run away in terror and throw copious amounts of fun sized chocolate bars at you. I’ll have to remember that for next year. Anyway, I digress….let’s get to it shall we. Believe it or not, there is indeed still time to be planting bulbs out into your garden if you are still wanting a few surprise fireworks in the springtime. Daffodils, Tulips and hyacinths can all still be planted out now and in the case of Tulips, delaying their planting until November can benefit them as it lessens the chances of a Fungal infection known as Tulip fire which can cause brown, distorted leaves in the Spring. If you have been growing Dahlias in your garden this year and are very keen to keep them for many years to come now is the time to lift and store their delicate tuberous roots for replanting after Winter. Of course,
if you do happen to live in an area that gets very little frost or waterlogged ground over the coldest of months then you can sometimes get away with leaving the Dahlias in the ground and simply applying a thick layer of mulch over them, but it is a more risky venture. To lift the tubers, simply wait for the plants to turn a yellowy brown colour, which indicates that the nutrients from them have been stored back into the roots, then cut this foliage off and carefully dig the roots out of the soil, wash off any excess dirt and then leave to dry for a few days (preferably hung upside down so that excess moisture can seep away from the roots and out of the stem). Once dry, you can then place the tubers into pots or boxes and cover with dry compost. Keep these in a frost free greenhouse or shed. Any Autumn fruiting trees you may have
in your garden such as apples can now be pruned once you have had your fill of fruits. Pruning can be done anytime between now and late Jan/early feb. Start with removing any dead, damaged or diseased wood and then move onto more delicate pruning from there. Also, apply greasebands or greasepaint to the trunks of fruit trees to help prevent pests from making their way from the ground up into the precious canopy where they can cause harm. And as always, enjoy your garden and have a fantastic bonfire night with plenty of toffee apples and sparklers. And if you are having a bonfire with all the garden debris that you have been collecting, please check beneath it for any wildlife that may be using it as a shelter before lighting. Homeowners in East Midlands urged to carry out essential safety checks as cold nights draw in As the clocks go back for another year, NICEIC, the UK’s leading name for registered electricians, is urging homeowners in the East Midlands to carry out important safety checks in their homes to avoid being left in the dark this winter.
“Whilst carrying out these checks should be routine in keeping your home safe, it’s important to recognise what is normal, what should be a warning sign and when to call in the professionals to avoid putting yourself and your family at risk.”
With the darker nights drawing in, homeowners will now begin to switch on more lights and turn up the heat to stay warm and cosy. The plugging in of additional equipment places a far greater strain on the electrical installation in the home.
To stay safe this winter, NICEIC is calling for homeowners in the East Midlands to undertake the following visual safety checks:
As such, NICEIC is encouraging homeowners to take the time to make some simple safety checks, to ensure homes are winter-proofed and avoid a potential disaster. Darren Staniforth, technical expert at NICEIC, said: “With the clocks going back this weekend, we’ve reached that time of year when people will naturally start plugging in more lamps or portable heaters as they nestle down for the winter. “However, with faulty electrics accounting for 20,000 house fires each year, it’s important that homeowners carry out regular ‘home health checks’ to avoid any unnecessary danger, or costly repairs.
•Ensure that plug sockets are not damaged or scorched Any scorch marks around a socket are an indication that something is overheating and that you should call a registered electrician to investigate further. •Check that any leads or cables are not damaged or frayed Never use an appliance if the cable is in a bad condition. •Check that lights are working correctly and there is no sign of visible damage •Check that sockets are not overloaded or that too many extension leads are in use •Check that the main fusebox (consumer unit) has RCD protection fitted. A Residual Current Device instantly breaks an electric circuit to prevent serious harm from an ongoing electric shock.
Those aged over 65 are at even greater risk of being involved in a fire and NICEIC is also urging those in the East Midlands to extend the safety checks to any elderly relatives or neighbours this year. Darren continued: “People over 65 are statistically more likely to be involved in a fire caused by faulty electrics. We want to encourage those looking out for an older relative or neighbour to have a quick check of the home to make sure that there is nothing there that causes electrical concern. During the colder months the elderly are more likely to be plugging in electrical appliances such as heaters or electric blankets - many of which could be old and potentially dangerous. By following the guidance provided, it should be quick and easy to spot any problems. “As the clocks go back, our message to homeowners in the East Midlands is simple – carry out the visual checks and if you are concerned, call in a professional, such as those registered with NICEIC, for any electrical work in order to keep your home and family safe.” For more information, or to search for a NICEIC registered contractor visit www. niceic.com

Local MP praises government Charter to stamp out racism in the workplace The local Member of Parliament for Sherwood, Mark Spencer, has welcomed the government’s plan to introduce the ‘Race at Work Charter’ as a positive step forward. The charter, which is designed to tackle injustices in the workplace, comes one year after the government published the findings of a world-first ‘Race Disparity Audit’, which looked at how people from different ethnic backgrounds are treated across society. The Race at Work Charter formally com-
mits businesses to a set of principles and actions, which are designed to remove any barriers that people may face because of their ethnic background. So far, there have been a number of high-profile organisations and businesses that have already signed up to the Charter, including NHS England, KPMG, Saatchi & Saatchi, RBS, the Civil Service and Lloyds Banking Group. Discussing the new charter, Mark said “This is a positive step from the government to make the workplace more meri-
tocratic. It’s important that you’re able to achieve your potential at work, no matter what your background, race, religion or ethnicity.” “This charter is a clear sign of the government’s commitment to equal opportunities in the work place, and it’s something that I’m proud to support. I would also tell any local employers and employees to take a look at the Charter, and if they have any questions about it at all to email me.”
`Self-Care’, is about preventing ill health and promoting good health. This requires a rebalance of the relationship between a person’s needs and public services. Too often, the health and care system, is particularly social services & healthcare is better at reacting to crisis and relies on hospitals and long-term care. This results in excess pressure on A & E departments, delayed discharges from hospital and people going into long-term care instead of returning to their homes. We that is the public, need a different approach, one that focuses on people and places rather than organisation, taking charge. There is now solid evidence that proves prevention, is the way forward. And this means we you and I, need a person and community centred approaches, to reduce the demands on resources to achieve better outcomes, given the limited resources. What we need is supportive social networks and resilient communities. It does remind me of the past, but working together has been something we have a history of doing well. And now again we need to work together to help people sustain good health and wellbeing. This can be done by enabling communities to support people to connect with and access non-medical local services, which are true community assets. How you may ask? Well, you need to monitor your health, by ensuring you check regularly for signs of a range of conditions, such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, stress. Your GP Surgery has lots of information about how to monitor for various conditions, and of course there is social media. But more is needed if you are isolated, lonely or feeling why should I bother. Well Self Care is having something to get up for, and if you have a health issue particularly knowing where you can find help, support
and information. Often sharing with others helps In our local area our Abbey Medical Group, Patient Participation Group (PPG) during Self Care week and beyond, is leading a project to identify what is available for the public across Blidworth, Rainworth & Ravenshead. What we need to know are the following things*** What groups are there? What would people like to do, but do not know how to get started? Let me know. We will have noticeboards to put ideas on at Blidworth & Ravenshead Surgery from Monday 12th November as well as Sherwood Forest Community Church in Blidworth & St Marys, and the PPG will have a stand at Blidworth Community Event, at the Sherwood Community Church on Saturday 17th November. Or you can e-mail me with information - contact:- gillyflower50@hotmail.com. This is the start of a 3 month project to find out what our community members, can do locally, want to get started or feel is needed. So get involved. For example, I have in the past run courses for people living with long-term conditions, but due to funding cuts these ended in 2016. However, over the past 8 months I have been working with the NHS in Mid Notts aiming to get people who live with Muscular Skeletal problems and long-term pain together. The purpose being to find ways of helping them manage their lives more effectively and give them a sense of purpose, to keep going, realising this is not just relying on medication. Through the focus group we have looked for a range of ways that each of them can improve the lives they have currently. Everyone is unique and not one strategy suits all, we know. The members feel that coming together and hearing others’ stories who have similar issues, chatting sharing ideas,
exercise & various other therapies etc, has helped. Now we want to move forward and have a group. Currently we have 14 people and we are looking at establishing coaches to help other patients manage their pain, in Mid Notts. This could be done 1 to 1 or in a group. This is a new idea & approach, this group is trying, but there is more to do, but importantly keeping positive and going, all agree is what they need more than anything for themselves and their families. Group members know there is no cure, but they now have a purpose to be more positive that they are doing more than just surviving each day. Are you interested in joining us let me know? Our next planning meeting is in January. This project is not just in our area it is across Nottinghamshire, the project manager for `Community Centred Approaches is Natalie Dunn’. She wants to meet & speak to local people, carers, community groups who wish to share their experiences to find out more about what really matters to people as they go about their daily lives within local communities. They want to understand what communities need and work with local people to get them what they need. Please share your experiences with her by e-mailing : natalie.dunn@nhs. net Natalie is looking to bring local people together at forums across the county. These forums will give people the opportunity to make their experiences, needs and wishes known. The forums will be made up of community leaders, local citizens, public service providers, local businesses, sports, cultural and spiritual groups and retailers. All working together to make each person count in our community.

Sam’s Workplace have been awarded a grant through the Reduce, Reuse, Recycling Fund from Veolia, (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractors) The grant will be used to purchase composting bins, aerators and compost manure. Pictured are Phil and Kyle accepting a HUGE cheque!! The Reduce, Reuse, Recycling Fund
(previously EnviroGrant) is run by Veolia (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractors) and offers a helping hand to a wide range of grassroots community, voluntary and school projects. Over the years support has been granted for a range of projects such as providing reuse workshops, food waste reduction cookery classes, compost and recycling bins, and enabling recyclable material and upcycling workshops to take place.
The Fund is a community fund to which not-for-profit community groups based in the county of Nottinghamshire (excluding the City of Nottingham) can apply for grants to assist with projects which improve their local environment. Projects with an environmental / green focus are prioritised, however all applications are considered on their individual merit. E-ON’s Energising Communities Fund have very generously given us a donation which we have used to purchase solar generators, panels and heaters for our polytunnels, which will be an absolutely boost for our guys working in the cold during the winter months (as well as our plants!). We hope this will help with our produce next year … we wait and see!! And .. hot off the press … we’ve just heard that Asda have awarded us £200 which we will use to purchase new crockery for the
cafe. Our growth and future is dependant on such kind donations, and we are truly grateful to everyone who has donated to us. Talking of kind donations …. one of our lovely customers, Bill, donated a fantastic candy floss machine which is now up and running …. we are having so much fun with it, and our candy floss topped milkshakes are proving extremely popular!! As we get more proficient with it, we are hoping for some exotic candy floss creations …. watch this space!!! Best wishes from us all at Sam’s Workplace 37 Preston Road, Rainworth, NG21 0BA

some festive fun! The Christmas lights switch-on is a chance for the village to come together. We’re all excited about being involved and we hope that local people will come along on the night to enjoy the fun.”

Story Writing Competition
Meghan and Charlie dashed down the Cornish bay to get closer to the mystery. They could smell the fishy scent of rained seaweed as they walked towards the cave. At the entrance of the chamber was a clue, it had been written by a man called Gareth Hampton. Meghan and Charlie were both thinking the same thing, who was he?
freezing cold water, waves slapped against their faces. Finally they got to where the heart belonged. Charlie fumbled to put the heart in place. The heart fell to the depths of the ocean. The water remained dark. Meghan and Charlie still hadn’t solved the mystery.
The children tiptoed into the mouth of the cave. They had to duck because of stalactites hanging down from the roof of the chamber. They could hardly see into the cave because of the illuminating light blinding their vision. The chamber was getting narrower and narrower the further they went in. Charlie could hear red blood dripping onto the stone floor, DRIP, DRIP, Drip! They felt panic stricken. They could the fear consuming all around them. As they came closer to the end of the tunnel the gleaming light went from a golden yellow to a sapphire blue. A shiver ran through their spines as they got closer to the end. At the end the cave looked like a derelict abandoned and monstrous chamber: falling apart. The children were paralysed with terror. Eventually they had come to the shimmering glow. “The Heart!” cried Meghan “It’s here!”
Very Well-done Georgina. Next month, the Winners Story from Blidworth Oaks Primary will be in print here for you to read.
The Rotary Club of Ravenshead and Blidworth Our Rotary Club actively supports many of our local schools with various projects and one such example is a “Story Writing Competition for Year 6” that we organised and sponsored this year. The competition was supported by 2 of our local schools; Blidworth Oaks Primary and CofE Primary, Ravenshead. The Competition allowed for up to the best 10 entries per school to be entered. The overall standard was exceptionally high. All entries were about two sides of A4 and handwritten, the story starting from a setpiece opening paragraph designed to give each participant a common idea from which to develop their story. Most had made a really good effort at punctuation and use of vocabulary. In fact quite impressive! For each school a 1st prize £25 voucher for The Works and 3 runner-up vouchers of £15 were awarded. Consolation prizes were awarded to the entries that hadn’t won a prize. The winner from The CofE Ravenshead School was Georgina Brown, aged 11, and below is her winning entry: There had been a wild, violent storm during the night along the Cornish coast. Deafening thunder and awesome flashes of lightening had kept the two children awake. Large waves had crashed up the beach of a remote bay and into a cave at the foot of the cliffs. By morning the storm had given way to a dull, grey sky. The children ventured outside to see what had happened. Looking down from the clifftops they could see a strange glow coming from the mouth of the cave. Time to investigate!
“Oh I never knew the famous heart would be here” shouted Charlie triumphantly, “My Grandad told many fables about I never knew I would find it here”. Meghan pulled out her hand to grab the glittering heart, a giant earthquake ran through the town. Charlie gave it one last tug and the rumbling stopped. “Lets go!” screamed Charlie at the top of his lungs. As quick as a flash, Charlie and Meghan raced to the end of the cave,. Desperately trying to return the heart as quickly as possible. They dived into the

Up-and-coming golf star receives support at sportsaid charity lunch •More than £800 raised by regional businesses on behalf of SportsAid •Teen golf hopeful Callum Macfie presented with essential funds at charity lunch •Retired Nottingham Panthers and Great Britain international forward, David Clarke, spoke to attendees about his career history BUSINESSES from Nottingham raised £820 for SportsAid – which helps to support the next generation of British sports stars – at a charity event last week. The money raised from the lunch – which took place at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground on Friday 12 October – will go towards providing financial support to local, talented, young people who have no other access to vital funding to assist them with training and ultimately enable them to reach their sporting potential. Event sponsors Nelsons, Yorkshire Bank, Trent Bridge Cricket Ground and Musson Liggins, along with other guests, heard from retired Nottingham Panthers and Great Britain international forward, David Clarke, who spoke about his career history. Teenager Callum Macfie was presented with a £500 cheque to help him reach his goals of playing golf internationally. The 17-year-old, of Edwinstowe, who plays with a handicap of +1, started playing golf at the age of nine and has already represented England four times. He is captain of the team that has won the England Golf Boys’ County Finals for the past two years. Tim Lawler, chief executive for SportsAid,
said: “Nottingham’s business community continues to offer wonderful support to young up-and-coming athletes, just like Callum, from across the local area. SportsAid offers a huge boost to the next generation of British sporting talent, not just financially, but through recognition of their achievements and the potential they’ve shown to reach the very top. “Fundraising is absolutely key to allowing the charity to support these stars of the future and we are very grateful to everybody who attends the lunch clubs and makes a contribution towards the country’s sporting success.” Stewart Vandermark, chief executive at Nelsons, added: “We are really pleased to be able to continue our support of SportsAid. It’s fantastic to see local businesses
come together to help young athletes progress in their chosen sport. As a business, it’s really rewarding to be able to say we help make these sports stars’ dreams come true.” The events are held three times annually and the sponsors choose an athlete to present with a £500 donation. Previous recipients of SportsAid support have included Sir Steve Redgrave and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. For more information on Nelsons, please visit www.nelsonslaw.co.uk or call 0115 958 6262. For further information about how you could become a sponsor or if you are interested in taking a table at future events, please call 0115 989 5298 or email chloe.williams@nelsonslaw.co.uk.
LOCAL Member of Parliament, Mark Spencer, has organised a community litter Pick in Rainworth, to take place later this month, and is calling for residents to come along. The MP and his team are meeting at The Lurcher Pub in Rainworth, NG21 0FB, at 10am on Friday 30th November, and will spend the morning litter picking the surrounding streets. Discussing his litter pick, Mark said “it’s
great to be able to organise a litter pick in Rainworth, and to take part in it myself. I’ve done a few litter picks in different villages across the constituency now, and they’re always really positive.” Explaining why he has organised the litter pick, Mr Spencer said; “A resident contacted me to complain about the amount of litter on and around his street. So rather than waiting around for it to be sorted by somebody else, I said I’d get my boots on,
get a team together and sort it myself.” “I’d love to see as many local residents there as possible to help clean up Rainworth. If you would like to get involved, feel free to drop me an email at mark.spencer. mp@parliament.uk.” Mark will be providing all equipment, such as bags and litter pickers, but asks that you wear sensible clothes and footwear.

Christmas fashion with Tara As the Christmas season approaches, besides worrying about buying presents in time, we have the additional thought of what to wear for the Christmas parties. In my next two articles leading up to Christmas I am going to talk about just this. Depending on where you get invited, the parties can a posh black tie event or a more formal/informal event. In this article I am going to talk about the dress wear for a Christmas formal to informal party.
Recently when I was in London for a Conference on Sustainable Fashion at the V&A, one lady there particularly caught my eye. She had sling back blond hair and wore an oversized red and white checked below the knee dress with see through patterned tights and black ankle boots. This look really interested me. It gave me thoughts on ways to create it as a winter style wear. You can create a similar look for a Christmas party. All you have to do
is to combine a long jersey dress and wear a Christmas jumper over it. This can create a winter warmer affect and can make you look stylish at the same time. For the accessories you can wear winter boots, knee high socks or printed see through tights, a colour shade that goes well with your outfit and boots of course. Dresses from Warehouse are ideal for creating this look and you can team it up with Christmas jumpers from Next. Tarannum Shad

Make a Difference – Volunteer!
granted them the opportunity to experience something new or do something they can no longer do for themselves is better than anything. Some of the members might not socialise with anyone till we see them the following week, this makes me want to make their day even more special.
Volunteers are vital to the success of Cornwater Evergreens, we couldn’t do without them. Volunteering is a rewarding pastime, but don’t take our word for it, read our volunteer Lisa’s story below: Why would anyone be a volunteer? For me it was a chance conversation with a friend, who enthused about the members of Cornwater Evergreens, which had me walking through the door the following week and still here nearly two years later. I first started volunteering at fourteen, and I’m still volunteering thirty-six years later! The great thing about being a volunteer is that I can give something back, but it fits in around my family and work life. I have volunteered with older people, children and those with additional needs.
Being a Cornwater Evergreens volunteer is all about laughter, chatting, listening, sharing, fun and friends. But whatever you do you’ll be making a difference to someone’s day.
For me being a volunteer is about giving, but the rewards are huge. Knowing that the support and encouragement I’ve given a member of Cornwater Evergreens has

Robin Hood, Friar Tuck and TV presenter help officially launch Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre Robin Hood (Ade Andrews), Friar Tuck (Phil Rose) and Mike Dilger, wildlife presenter on the BBC’s The One Show, helped officially launch the new £5.3m Sherwood Forest Visitor. Mike, a naturalist who has become a regular on the nation’s TV screens thanks to his wildlife features on the popular BBC1 family show, began his conservation career in the county, working for the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers after graduating from the University of Nottingham. Nottinghamshire County Council Leader Councillor Kay Cutts, MBE, Councillor John Cottee, Communities and Place Committee Chairman, and Nottinghamshire Vice-Lord Lieutenant Tim Richmond OBE were among the other guests at the launch event. Around 200 people looked on as the Major Oak Pop Choir sang songs to welcome guests, and Coun Cutts, RSPB Chief Exec Mike Clarke and BBC One Show presenter Mike Dilger gave speeches at the official opening before a plaque was unveiled. Mike Dilger said: “One of my jobs whilst I was working there as a Conservation Volunteer Coordinator was to put up a new fence around the Major Oak, so it’s a location I know well and as such is a place close to my heart.” Nottinghamshire County Council Leader Councillor Kay Cutts MBE said: "We would like to thank everyone who has worked with us as this exciting project has
developed. The official opening is a proud moment and it is inspiring to think that millions of people visiting our iconic Sherwood Forest will enjoy spending time at the visitor centre in the years to come." Councillor John Cottee, Committee Chairman for Communities and Place, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: "It is a landmark occasion to witness the official opening of the new Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre. As a county council, we have demonstrated our total commitment to the project from the start with our investment of £4m. Our world-famous Sherwood Forest, historic Major Oak and legendary Robin Hood will go from strength to strength following the completion of this scheme." Robin Hood, aka Ade Andrews, VisitEngland Ambassador, said: “This is a new chapter in the story of Sherwood Forest. It is about time Robin Hood was put on the pedestal he deserves, so we have this iconic figure representing the environment in this part of England which is our most famous forest – Sherwood Forest.” Phil Rose, known to millions as Friar Tuck from the hit TV programme Robin of Sherwood, was also at the official opening. He appeared in every episode in all three series of the programme in the 1980s which starred first Michael Praed then Jason Connery as Robin Hood. It also featured Ray Winstone as Will Scarlet. Gemma Howarth, RSPB senior site
manager, said: “Whilst the last 12 months of building has been a huge focus for us, the project dates back much further than this, and includes years of planning to help bring it to fruition,” she said. “We recognise that a project of this ambition needs backing from so many different quarters. We are especially thankful for the support of the local village residents and groups, and plan to host a community event to celebrate with them a little later in the year.” The facility, which cost more than £5 million, was completed in August following a year-long build. The building and the National Nature Reserve are managed by an RSPB-led partnership which includes Sherwood Forest Trust, Thoresby Estate and the Woodland Trust, working together with Nottinghamshire County Council, who provided £4 million towards the cost of the project. Besides partners, other funders included the Garfield Weston Foundation and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership; the private sector-led partnership of business, local authorities, skills and training providers, and community and voluntary organisations, promoting economic growth across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Derbyshire. It invested £500,000 in the visitor centre via its Local Growth Fund, allocated by Government to part-fund infrastructure projects directly benefiting the economy.

A decade of being at the heart of the community For the past 10 years, Lammas Leisure Centre has catered for not only the community’s health and wellbeing aspirations but also developed international athletes, hosted a multitude of events and been the health hub for the community.
Since it opened on the 3 November 2008, Lammas Leisure Centre has offered stateof-the-art gym equipment, an ice skating rink, an indoor bowls hall, a four court sports hall and squash courts. The two swimming pools host a variety of aquatic activities, including an award-winning swimming lesson programme. The centre’s facilities continue to be the best in the area and the staff pride themselves on providing a top-class service to every customer that comes through the doors. The reach of the centre goes beyond the walls of the centre, the community engagement team have worked closely with Ashfield District Council to increase physical activity by 15% over the last year, and lowered childhood obesity by 1.6% during this time. For Paul Blakemore, Everyone Active General Manager, the centre has become
central to the community and he is looking forward to celebrating the landmark date with the people of Sutton-in-Ashfield in November.
“I have been at Lammas for two years, following after Richard Chatwin who managed the centre since its opening and to see how the centre has grown has been fantastic,” Blakemore said. “It’s a great landmark to hit for the centre and we pride ourselves on being somewhere that the whole community can use. “We offer a variety of programmes, from learn to swim to GP referral schemes to ice skating lessons, which encourages anyone and everyone to get a little bit more active. “A decade’s worth of service is really worth marking so I hope the people of Sutton-in-Ashfield will come and join us for the celebration on the 3 November when we open our doors for everyone.” For further details of the open day or the facilities available at Lammas Leisure Centre visit www.everyoneactive.com or call 01623 511 177.

Morning Shade your eyes from nature’s brightness Let a moment of silence fall upon your ears Let your fingers touch the painted picture Still damp from morning dew Capture the Suns reflections As they sparkle from the stream Morning mists have left with the night To return again with the midnight moon Break of dawn spreads herself slowly from her bed Witnessed by nature’s all seeing eye Of birds and animals And even man In this wooded valley’d land Sun shines filtered rays warm the opening flowers And insects find their way to pollen honey’d gift Take these things into your mind Breathe in the freshness of the morning Step out of your dreams Step into the new day To the awakening of the world ©️Arthur Radford
Young people’s night-time operation in Sherwood Forest Just under 400 young people took part in an enthralling navigation and team exercise in the heart of Sherwood Forest in October - at the dead of night. Shadow 2018 is an overnight navigation and team exercise, organised by Nottinghamshire County Council’s youth service to boost the skills and confidence of young people, which was celebrating its 44th year, and took place from 10pm and 4am, overnight on Saturday, October 13. With base camp at the new £5.3m Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, near Edwinstowe, the young people took part in small teams on the night, matched by various skills and abilities in each group. The event concluded with a well-earned breakfast back at base. The teenagers wore head torches and were given orienteering maps and received basic navigation training and basic first aid training, ahead of the exercise. Councillor Tracey Taylor, Vice-Chairman of the Children and Young People’s Committee, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “What a fantastic experience for many of our young people! As well as being a weekend to remember, there were key transferable skills the young people learnt at the event that they can take forward into other areas of life such as teamwork, resilience and problem solving.”
The youth service had teams from 38 young people’s centres from across the county taking part in the event, and also involved were teams from the cadets, scouts and the voluntary youth services. There were nine different incidents out in the forest including activities such as An Assault Course, Scary Circus Skills and Performing Songs. And each team had six hours in the forest to navigate around the sectors completing as many 'incidents' as they could – earning
more points for the more tasks they successfully completed. To ensure the teams did not get lost in the pitch black of night, teams were given a map with a list of locations for the incidents. They then navigated their way around. The incidents were spread out around the forest and they were all given a radio, so the youth service leaders were able to track the progress of the teams from headquarters, and ensuring the young people stayed on track.

Mansfield solicitors add to Wills, Trusts & Probate strengths The Wills, Trusts and Probate department at Tallents Solicitors in Mansfield is responding to a local need for more appointments with their experienced Private Client team by increasing availability at their Mansfield office. Sarah Allen, a solicitor specialising in Wills, Trusts and Probate has over 15 years’ experience in helping her clients write and update Wills and manage the affairs of their loved ones. She has been offering appointments at the Tallents Newark office but will now also be available at Mansfield. Sarah is already highly regarded and known by the Mansfield community, having worked in the town for around 10 years previously. She has already gained a reputation for making the complicated law around Wills, Trusts and Probate very simple for her clients to understand. No need for complications when writing a Will She says: “I completely understand that making a Will can be overwhelming for my clients and the last thing they need is to be bombarded with complicated legal terms. It doesn’t matter whether their personal situation is simple or complicated, I will sit down with them to fully understand their needs so I can provide comprehensive, yet accessible legal advice to help them achieve their wishes.” You don’t have to be rich to have a Will Sarah says: “We’ve recognised that there is a growing need for the Mansfield community to access clear legal advice on Wills, Trust and Probate so they can protect their loved ones from the trauma of dying intestate. “I’m a firm believer that everyone should have a Will, whether you just have a few sentimental items to leave to your family or significant wealth and property that needs to be distributed effectively.
Sarah Allen (also below) with the Private Client team from Tallents, along with John Coulthurst from the British Red Cross.
Sarah, and the Wills, Trust and Probate team can offer sympathetic advice on a wide range of Private Client topics: •Lasting Powers of Attorney •Inheritance Tax Advice •Wills, both writing and updating •Probate and estate administration •Court of Protection applications Sarah is also a member of STEP, the global association for practitioners who specialise in family inheritance and

Sarah added “Thinking of writing your Will might seem incredibly morbid, but in reality, it’s a straightforward process that I can help you understand easily. After an appointment with me or one of my colleagues, you’ll feel as if a weight has been lifted off your shoulders, knowing that should the worst happen, your loved ones won’t be having to sort out your affairs when they should be mourning your loss.” l Sarah Allen is available for appointments at both the Mansfield and Newark offices of Tallents Solicitors. What would you give up if you could do it easily? Chocolate? Alcohol? Smoking? Snacking? Most habits start out harmless enough but then they can become a habit. If a habitual behaviour bring us pleasure our brains produce chemicals such as serotonin or dopamine which make us feel good. This encourages us to do it again. In a society where pleasurable behaviours are easy to find the more likely we are to repeat the behaviour to get the same sense of satisfaction from it and so we can get addicted. You might eventually want to give something up and if so, we can find it really hard and start to have cravings. You might find you can go for a period of time without your ‘fix’ but that relies on willpower and eventually may result in you returning to your old patterns of behaviour. So why do we have this internal conflict? As humans, we have two parts to our mind our conscious mind that thinks, learns things and makes decisions and subconscious which is our automatic part. Think of the sub conscious as being a storehouse of memories and habits and unfortunately once a habit is in there it’s difficult to change. When we learn as a child like walking and talking the conscious mind learns how to do something and then passes it onto the subconscious mind. It was the same when you were learning anything new – the conscious learns and then the subconscious just does. It all works very well until there’s a conflict between the two parts of the mind. One voice says you want to change – lose weight, cut out
alcohol or stop smoking and the other tells you to keep on with your old habits because it doesn’t like change. You are then in a situation of having to rely on the willpower of the conscious mind to override the urges of the subconscious. If you consciously want to stop doing something the subconscious will provide you with many emotional reasons to change your mind so you need to identify what conflicting thoughts your subconscious holds. 1. I need to drink alcohol to enjoy myself 2. I enjoy smoking and it relaxes me 3. I’ve had a bad day so I’m going to eat chocolate to treat myself When you consciously want to stop doing something, the subconscious will provide you with various emotional arguments to change your mind because it doesn’t like change. The first step is to identify what conflicting thoughts your subconscious holds. But if you analyse those statements with your conscious mind this would probably be the reply: 1. You didn’t always need alcohol to enjoy yourself – it’s more what you are doing and who you are with that make a situation enjoyable. 2. Smoking doesn’t really relax you - in fact all those chemicals in cigarettes are just slowly killing you. 3. Is eating sugar and fat that contain empty calories and no nutrients really a treat? – Maybe you should reconsider and treat yourself to fitness and health or pamper yourself with a beautiful relaxing massage.
Of course, these are just some examples and everyone’s thought processes are different – but it’s worth thinking through this process with your conscious mind so you can assess your thoughts logically and rationally and address what you need to change. Hypnotherapy is a great tool to assist you in this process, as when we are deeply relaxed our subconscious mind is in a heightened state of awareness and is more open to new suggestions. So with a little bit of work on your part, a qualified hypnotherapist will be able to guide you through the process, often resulting in a far easier change than willpower alone. Some clients come to our Practice hoping that we’ve got a magic wand which can make change be a simple process. Unfortunately there is no magic wand but our techniques can help to undo that feeling of inner conflict which reduces the need for willpower and makes it easier for us to give up something we no longer need or want in our lives. The Brain Gut Connection - What is it? There are certain sayings that have always been connected to the gut. We have heard of the saying ‘go with your gut feeling’ and if we are nervous, we might say we have ‘butterflies in our stomach’. Have you ever thought why this reaction takes happens. It seems that the gut-brain connection is much more linked than first thought in the influence and control of emotions, weight, immunity and even heart health and cholesterol levels. The gut is linked to the brain and is connected by the Central Nervous System (CNS) and neurotransmitters, whilst the vagus nerve also plays a prominent role in the gut - brain connection. For example, the neurotransmitter serotonin, contributes to feelings of happiness and helps control our body clock. A healthy gut, therefore, is beneficial, as it produces a large proportion of serotonin, low serotonin levels is said to cause anxiety and depression. We get a lot of our understanding of the connections between the brain and gut through studies, mainly of mice and rats. One study looked at rats brought up in a germ free environment (as opposed to those brought up in an environment of colonised bacteria) the outcome showed that they produce more important, and different, brain fertilizers.
The brain fertilizer in question, is an important protein called Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) when this is found to be low, perhaps because of high levels of stress, it is implicated in the incidence of depression and anxiety. As humans, we have learned to live with whatever is in our gut; they are referred to as microbes. These microbes, which form the chemical make-up of our gut, have very important functions; our microbes help to control our immune system and keep it in check. The microbes job, amongst many, is to communicate with the immune cells in the body. If we have too many bad bacteria’s in the gut, this can have an effect on our immunity and, in turn, our overall health. As we grow from babies into adults our gut microbiome changes and the food that we eat has an effect on the diversity of our gut. There is growing research that suggests that the gut microbiome affects our Central Nervous System, which controls key functions in the brain such as our emotions. An imbalance in our gut is called dysbiosis and this affects our CNS. If there are too many unhealthy microbes, it can lead to conditions such as weight gain and obesity, which in turn may also lead to further health issues. One study looked at the microbiome of twins; one was obese and the other was a healthy weight. When the scientists implanted the faeces of the twins into mice, one of the mice, who received the gut makeup of the obese twin,
also became obese; this could suggest that the gut make up is what is contributing to making us over weight. Furthermore, other studies have looked at the gut diversity and how it may influence our heart health, as it’s suggested that the gut plays an important role in promoting healthy cholesterol. To counteract the effect of bad gut bacteria’s, Lactobacillus bacteria has been used to reduce high cholesterol levels. Because of the growth of genetic testing we are able to find out more about the brain gut connection, that we could not easily have assessed before, as it’s an area that cannot easily cultured in a laboratory. To help improve our gut environment and therefore improve immunity, mood, cardiovascular health and weight, a few simple things can help. Consider a good probiotic Eat wholegrain foods. Eat a diverse range of foods Eat fermented foods such as sauerkraut Limit intake of sugar and artificial sweeteners Take antibiotics only when it’s really necessary. Sport All change at the Wrens 32
An horrendous run of results has brought about a change of management at East Midlands Counties League club Rainworth MW. Both manager Ben Marvin and assistant Paul Rockley have tendered their resignations, although Marvin agreed to stay on until a new manager was appointed. Stepping up to the helm now is new boss Lewis Saxby, who took charge of neighbouring Central Midlands League outfit Blidworth at the start of the season, and guided the club to the second round proper of the FA Vase, their latest success being a 3-0 win at Leicester-based Aylestone Park, who play at the same step in the non-league system as Rainworth, but in the United Counties League. Saxby brings with him assistant manager Dan Machin, and with the co-operation of Blidworth they have brought with them a number of new players who, they believe, will lift the club well clear of a relegation threat. Marvin’s last game in charge saw a badly depleted side crash 6-0 to Stapleford Town in the second round of the Notts Senior Cup, making it a sad end for the likeable departing manager. Marvin said: “This is a decision I made in my mind in September and, after notifying the chairman of my intentions, I agreed to stay on until a suitable replacement was found. “A change in my working circumstances has found me unable to commit to giving the manager’s role the full attention it deserves. “Results have been undeniably poor, but performances haven’t been too far off and there is a core of good young local players in the squad. With the addition of some experience in the right areas the club will

find itself climbing the table in the very near future. “Les Lee has been a great chairman to work for and I wish him, the committee and the helpers all the very best for the future.” The chairman has thanked both Ben and Paul for their efforts and they both go with the club’s best wishes. Meanwhile, followers of local non-league football may wonder why Saxby decided to leave Blidworth in the middle of a good run in the Vase to join a club which has been in turmoil in terms of results. Saxby, whose father Gary is also a former manager at Rainworth, explained: “For me, despite results so far this season, Rainworth is the biggest club locally apart from Mansfield Town, and while AFC Mansfield have kicked off in recent seasons, it’s Rainworth who have the proud history. “As a kid growing up and through all my footballing career Rainworth have been the top club.” Saxby’s dad Gary, the former Mansfield Town defender, managed Rainworth some years ago, and Lewis agreed that may have had some influence. But he continued: “I would like to do an even better job than he did. Anyone who knows me knows I am quite ambitious, I’m not one to just sit still, I want to try to climb as high as possible in the game as I can, and I see this as my next step up. “I know the club has been in turmoil results-wise, but my realistic aim is to get us out of the bottom four or five, and then go on from there.” Forthcoming fixtures (at the time of writing): October: 27th West Bridgford (h). November: 3rd Teversal (h); 10th Clifton All Whites (h); 17th Gedling MW (a); 21st Borrowash Victoria (League Cup) (a); 24th Radford (a).
