Michelle Willcocks wins world triathlon championships Mansfield Triathlon Club’s Michelle Willcocks has won the triathlon world championships in a thrilling race in Rotterdam to cap an outstanding year of racing. Michelle was fully 2.5 minutes ahead of the second placed athlete, completing the 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 51 seconds.

All this would be an incredible achievement in any normal circumstances but in 2011 Michelle had major life changing abdominal surgery as a result of being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Undeterred, she has used this to renew her determination to succeed in her sport. The world championships gold is just the latest in a series of outstanding results which include one European gold medal, two European silver medals and, six British and National gold medals. Tour of Britain competition paints the town yellow

‘It was all yellow’ as a record number of shops and businesses got involved in the Tour of Britain Shop Window Competition. Organised by Ashfield District Council in partnership with Hucknall Tourism and Regeneration; Kirkby Traders Forum and Sutton Town Centre Group, the competitions, held in Hucknall, Kirkby and Sutton, were put on to decorate the district as the Tour of Britain bike race passed through each of the town centres. The competitions were aimed at promoting town centres and their businesses, encouraging community spirit, increasing footfall and customer spend.

With criteria based on originality, theme and WOW factor, judging the overall winners proved difficult as businesses across the district tested their creativity. First prizes went to Bliss Boutique of High Street, Hucknall; Rose Bower of Outram Street, Sutton; and Scissors Hair and Beauty of Kingsway, Kirkby. All competition winners received a trophy and a meal for two kindly donated by J.D. Wetherspoon. All prizes for each of the competitions were as follows: Hucknall: 1st – Bliss Boutique; 2nd – Nottingham Building Society; 3rd – Fur-ever

Friends Sutton: 1st – Rose Bower; 2nd – Flowfayre Plumbing and Heating Kirkby: 1st – Scissors Hair and Beauty; 2nd – Brisco’s Chemist Councillor Don Davis, Deputy Leader of the Council said: “I’d like to thank all the shops and businesses who have got involved in all three competitions. “It was also great to see the number of people who decorated their houses and streets along the route. The end result really enhanced the community spirit both in the lead up to the event and on the day itself”.

Research reveals households are producing more waste

what can be recycled, followed by 18% who say it’s too difficult to do and 13% who don’t think it will make any difference. Some 9% say they are too busy to recycle and 5% said they don’t need to as their Council will do it for them.

REWS warns that as we produce more waste, a growing number of landfill sites could close and there could be a rise in recycling centres refusing to take waste. Further new research(2) from REWS reveals that 65% of professional investors

believe this problem will get worse over the next two years. This could also lead to a rise in the level of fly-tipping. Of those households who have seen a rise in the level of waste they produce, 39% said it was because their households had become bigger through for example their families growing. However, 33% said it was due to retailers making special offers to encourage people to buy more. Some 23% said it was because their disposable income had increased so they are buying more, and 14% said it was due to falling prices. When it comes to recycling, 7% say their households recycle less than 10% of the waste they produce. Some 45% say they recycle less than 50%, and just one in five think they recycle more than 75%. When asked why they don’t recycle more, 36% say that they don’t know enough about

The UK has been experiencing some of its coldest and longest winters for decades and, with many of us having been taken by surprise, next time around it may be a good idea to be slightly better prepared.

number of factors, including size, number of people and budget. If you have been stuck with an old boiler for a long time, you will be amazed at the difference a new one can bring.

homes escapes through the roof. By making sure the loft is adequately insulated, you prevent too much heat from escaping.

Although there may be a certain romance associated with snuggling up in front of a blistering fire, the truth is, cold homes can be costly, both on our pockets and our health. There are some simple ways to make your home winter proof and, as well as making your nights more comfortable, they could also save you some much-needed extra pennies for the Christmas festivities.

Have Winter Curtains

Although for some this may seem like a step too far, it will only take a minimal effort and you will be thankful if you end up having to rely on it. How extensive you decide to make your emergency kit rather depends upon your location, and the related threats. Making sure that you have an alternative heat source, torches and batteries, tools and equipment and a wellstocked pantry would certainly be a good starting point.

One in three households producing more waste blame retailers for encouraging people to buy more through special offers New research(1) from Renewable Energy Waste Solutions (REWS), a new renewable energy company, reveals that 32% of people believe the amount of waste their households have produced over the past three years has generally increased, compared to one in four (25%) who think it has declined. One in 12 households says that the amount of waste they produce has increased dramatically since 2014.

William McClintock, Chairman REWS said: “As a society, we are producing more waste than ever before. This is fuelling the growing problem of landfill sites closing and more recycling centres turning certain types of waste away as they do not have room to take it. “We need to find new ways for managing our waste, and one key focus area should be on how we can turn more of it into renewable energy.’’

Top tips to help make your home Winter-proof this year

Check Your Boilers Efficiency Although not the most interesting part of the process, the efficiency of your boiler makes a huge difference to the warmth of your home. Older boilers were built with poor efficiency, and wear and tear can mean that they are costing the earth, whilst being largely ineffective. New condensing boilers are designed to maximise efficiency by limiting the energy lost through evaporation. If your boiler is more than ten years old, there are even some subsidies and grants available to help you with the purchase of a new one. Simply by getting in a top-quality plumber, you will be able to discover the efficiency of your current boiler and receive advice on which boiler is the most suited to your household. This varies depending on a

By having seasonal curtains, you can ensure that it’s not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. As well as helping to insulate against heat loss and keeping the cold air out, winter curtains also play a large part in giving your home a warm and cosy feel. Special heavy-duty curtains with an added insulation layer are the most effective. Regardless of how much warmer they make the house, however, they will certainly make you feel more protected from the harsh winter chill outside. As an extra to this, laying down thick rugs can also boost the warmth and cosiness of your winter retreat. Not only do they act as an extra layer of insulation on the floor, but also they prevent you from having to walk across cold floors, at once making you feel more cosy. Check Your Insulation Although, once again, not the most exciting of jobs, how well you home is insulated is a crucial component of how efficient the heating is. One key place to start, in this respect, is the loft. As we all know, warm air rises and thus a lot of the heat in our

Favourite photographs at Mansfield Museum MANSFIELD Museum is continuing to bring Sherwood readers a selection of the favourite photographs from its collections.

Many of these are available at the ourmansfieldandarea website, which gives the public the opportunity to share their information, memories, photos and knowledge about Mansfield and the local communities, both as they are today and how they were in the past. If you are interested in visiting the site, type www.ourmansfieldandarea.org. uk into the address line on your internet browser. This month’s choice is some of the museum’s favourite images as they show the Market Place when it was open to traffic. An interesting display relating to the councils cleansing department has obviously attracted plenty of attention. One of the museum’s contributors said it was Tuesday, 16th July 1974, and was held in conjunction with the Keep Mansfield Tidy campaign. Three hundred schoolchildren and other visitors were shown demonstrations of how some of the new vehicles could compact furniture and mattresses.

Rainworth & District U3A Rainworth & District U3A met on Wednesday morning, 13th August at Rainworth Village Hall. The meeting was opened by the chairman, Pam Berry, and as usual, there was a raffle, free refreshments, book stall and the very busy tables where a good attendance of members were signing up for the various forthcoming events, outings, meals, quizzes etc. There was a ‘Bacon Butty and game of Curling’ event, and another visit to the Hostess for an event entitled ‘Only Fools and Three Courses’, to be signed up for and participated in, as well as a 60’s & 70s evening. The usual lunch club and breakfast club and National Trust events were announced as well as the monthly pub-quiz, the Christmas party. and many other outings.

The members had a real treat this month. The speaker was Denis Hill who gave an illustrated talk about old Mansfield – showing before and after photographs. Even though most of the members had lived locally all their lives, many of the views he showed were a revelation to everyone. Many just required walking up an alley, or even just looking upwards to see the beautiful architecture that is still in existence in Mansfield . It was such an entertaining and enlightening morning. Our next meeting will be on Wed 11th October, in the Village Hall at 10.00am. The speaker will be Brian Freeland on the subject of “The view from the Wings”. Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society On September 5th we were very fortunate to be able to welcome Peter Liddle MBE, as our guest speaker, to the Blidworth Welfare Function Room. Peter is a first class speaker and the Head of Leicestershire’s County Archaeological Team. The evening proved to be a fascinating illustrated talk on the subject of the death and burial of Richard III. Peter spoke for 90 minutes and began by explaining how Richard III lost his life during the Battle at Bosworth Field and how the body was taken to Leicester and buried with little ceremony in the church of Franciscan Friars. His remains were lost for more than five centuries. Much more research followed and eventually in 2011 Leicester City Council agreed to an archaeological excavation to establish where the remains of Richard III might be located. Following the refreshment break, Peter went on to show detailed illustrations of the trenches that were dug in a Council car park and how the skeleton of a male with curvature of the spine and evidence of battle wounds had been discovered and therefore had the potential to be Richard III. In the months that followed the skeleton was subject to scientific analysis including radiocarbon dating and finally a DNA comparison to a descendent of Richard III's eldest sister, Anne of York. In February 2013 it was established that beyond reasonable doubt the individual was indeed Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England. Our members and guests were most appreciative of an excellent evening entertainment and Peter Liddle was applauded for his most interesting and fascinating contribution. Our next three meeting details are as follows; •4th October - Bob Massey - 'Nottingham on Sea'. •7th November - Colin Hobday - 'Derby-

shire Delights'. •5th December - Christmas Meeting. The meetings are in the Function Room of the Blidworth Welfare. Doors are open at 6.45 pm. Ample parking is available. New members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is a small charge on the door of £2 to cover refreshments. We are pleased to announce that the Society's book on Blidworth & World War 1 has been reprinted and will be on sale at future meetings and through our website.

Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum On Wednesday, 16th September, we welcomed a group visit from Hucknall Tourist Regeneration and on Friday, 18th August, we opened the museum specially on the 24th anniversary of the last Bilsthorpe Colliery disaster. We were pleased to have 45 members of our former mining community for tea and cakes. On Thursday, 24th August, 22 members and friends, enjoyed a trip to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The trip was jointly organised by member Alan Ward and Keeley Ward, of Bilsthorpe British Legion. Our Tabletop Sale on Saturday, 26th August was well supported and £409 was raised for group funds. A big thankyou to everyone who helped in every way. We were pleased to participate in Bothamsall Show over the three days of the August Bank Holiday weekend, organised by the Vintage Tractor Association. We also had a display at Langwith Show, organised by Rhubarb Community Farm,

on Saturday, 2nd September and, on the weekend of 9th/10th September, we had a marquee with a museum display and sales table at Pleasley Heritage Pit Open Weekend. A big thankyou to all our wonderful hosts and volunteers at these events, who erected and dismantled marquees, helped with transport, manned our stands and, most of all, thank you to everyone who supported our exhibitions. Truly, a chance to renew old friendships and make new ones. On Thursday, 7th September, five members attended a Social Afternoon, organised by Notts Museum Forum at Creswell Crags. After tea and homemade cakes, jointly contributed by forum members, we enjoyed a tour of one of the caves at Cresswell Crags, with a very well-informed guide. Again, a chance to renew acquaintanceships and make new contacts. Our next fundraising event will be our Autumn Coffee Morning on Saturday, 18th November. Further details next month.

On Wednesday, 16th August, we held our Annual General Meeting. In his report, chairman Dennis Lewin spoke of a busy year of interesting speakers, social events and suppers, a successful Plant Sale & Coffee Morning, Produce Show and a wonderful summer holiday visiting the Gardens of the West Midlands & Cotswolds. A cheque for £710, raised by the club and friends, was presented to Mr Martin Knox, of the John Eastwood Hospice. After the close of formal business, members enjoyed a generous buffet, prepared by the committee and tackled a floral quiz, arranged by vice-chairman Ian Roberts, which was won by Carol Orpwood. Our first raffle prizewinner was Steve Smart. Our Village Hall looked splendid with 206 exhibits at our 20th Annual Produce Show on Sunday, 3rd September. The show was organised by Show Secretary, Steve Smart, aided by Assistant Show Secretary Connie Roberts and members of the committee. We have a good programme lined up for the coming season.

Bilsthorpe Garden Club

Farnsfield Local History Society NOTTINGHAM'S HISTORIC GREEN SPACES was the subject of the talk at our September meeting. Dr. Judith Mills, Research fellow at the University of Nottingham's History Department covered the creation of the earliest Green Spaces in the city, how they were used and how they have changed over time, including the sports played there, the racecourse on the Forest and the cricket fields, the band concerts at various venues. Most of these green spaces still exist and all but Victoria Park in Sneinton are near the tram routes, from the Forest through to the Meadows. The Arboretum has recently had a makeover and is well worth a visit. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 11th October at 7.30, as usual in the Lower Hall of the village centre on New Hill. The speaker will be Richard Bowler talking about WOMEN IN WORLD WAR I starting with the fight for equality prior to 1914 and how it ended up relying on female labour to keep the country running and eventually win the war. Without them history would be very different.

Highlighting the benefits of fostering support care Julie Harrison says she can find no negatives about her role as a support foster carer in Nottinghamshire.

Watch the video here: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=Kku9QEBVZQU Nottinghamshire County Council is running a campaign this fortnight to raise awareness of support care fostering which enable people to foster children for regular weekends or short breaks at a time to fit around their lifestyle. New statistics say there are only 32 support foster carers in the county and the campaign seeks to increase this number. Julie is a single carer who has supported 26 young people since June 1995 and she has recommended the role to other people. She said: “It is not just about offering a bed for the night, it is about providing support for the young person and the family that they usually stay with on a regular basis. It is about fitting into their routine and providing a solid base for them to have a break from daily life and making it as enjoyable for them as possible.” Julie says she has a lot of empathy with the young people and says she has heard difficult and challenging background stories from children and that it is about helping to give children their childhood back. She said: “By providing constant, consistent help on a regular basis, it gives some stability for the young people and helps them to form routines. It is almost like children having a break with an aunt or uncle and gives them a fresh perspective on life.”

facturing when she first got involved in fostering and thought that without a family of her own she had something to offer. She was able to offer support care placements during weekends and school holidays which fitted around her working life. She said: “Sometimes it is a placement from Friday night to Sunday night, other times it is during holidays, dependent on what the needs of the child are following an initial consultation meeting with the foster care placement officers.

“The benefits are overwhelming. It is a very fulfilling role and the memories of events and activities make me smile even when I am not with the young person. I honestly cannot find any negatives about being a support foster.”

the Children and Young People’s Committee, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Our support care scheme enables people to foster who would not be able to consider full-time fostering. The positive experience that Julie has had offers a great example of the vital work support foster carers do across the county.” People interested in fostering support care can visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ fostering or call 0300 5008080 There is an informal drop-in session arranged with members of the fostering recruitment team on hand to discuss all aspects of foster care. The event is at Newark library, Wednesday 11 October, 4pm to 6.30pm

One of the highlights she remembers is the time she went on a zip-wire at Sherwood Pines with one of the children. She said: “I have got to try new things, things I would not otherwise have done unless I was a foster carer. The experience widens your understanding as to why a child is where they are, build a bond with them and gives the main foster family a break. Support care is a great option so I would warmly recommend it to anyone to explore. It’s a real route for self-development too.” Julie has gone on to provide a full-time placement to one of the young people she supports as well as continuing to offer support care provision. The initiative was discussed by the County Council's Children and Young People's Committee at its meeting today (Sep18).

Carers who are required to look after a family member rarely get any respite, and although helping a loved one is highly rewarding, it's also extremely demanding. A few days' rest can do wonders for your energy levels and enthusiasm, and we can help with that. Knowing that you are able to escape for a break from time-to-time can be a great incentive to keep you going, especially when you are confident that the person you care for will be well looked after by a trained professional during your absence. You don't necessarily need to have a long break to feel the benefit. Some of our clients find that short breaks at regular intervals can work well, perhaps one afternoon or evening a week for some 'me time' is all you need to rejuvenate yourself. Alternatively, a monthly visit to the theatre, a trip to the cinema, a day at the health spa or book-

ing a pampering session can provide the well-deserved and much-needed break that helps many carers to de-stress and relax. It’s easy to arrange the break you need with Respectful Care. All you need to do is brief us on the details of the normal care regime you follow for the person you care for. You can even request one of our Support and Care Workers to work alongside you for a day to introduce them to your loved one, show them where everything is and allow them to watch how you provide the care your relative or friend needs. During your respite break we will then visit as scheduled, or stay in your home to provide live-in care as planned and replicate the care that you provide every day. Our team provides homecare services across the whole of Mansfield and Ashfield, including the areas listed below. If you are not sure if we cover your area please

Artwork highlights boy’s brave blood cancer fight THE story of a Mansfield boy who underwent more than three years of treatment for childhood leukaemia formed part of a large scale art installation in one of London’s busiest squares.

Joe Hogan, (9), was one of 104 people with blood cancer, chosen from across the UK, to have their story told as part of the installation in Paternoster Square. The work represented the 104 people who are diagnosed with blood cancer every day in the UK, raising public awareness and making their experiences visible by telling their individual stories. It was erected in September, to mark Blood Cancer Awareness Month. The artwork also launched the Make Blood Cancer Visible campaign, supported by the blood cancer research charity Bloodwise and eight other blood cancer charities and patient support groups. Joe, a pupil at St Philip Neri with St Bede Catholic Primary School, and his family now help the blood cancer charity Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, His mum, Leanne, is also a patient ambassador for Bloodwise. Joe was diagnosed with high risk acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in January 2010 when he was just two. Leanne said: “He was withdrawn, feverish and lethargic. “We visited the GP several times

JOE Hogan, centre, with his parents, Leanne and Billy, his brother, Finlay, and sister, Lexi. and although his symptoms were put down to a viral infection, we weren’t convinced. “He seemed to get worse, his face matched the colour of his light blond hair, he developed pain in his limbs and unexplained bruises and tiny blood spots all over his body. “We took him back to the GP again but this time we were adamant that something was not quite right with our little boy. “After a thorough examination it was identified that Joe had an enlarged spleen and, coupled with

his other symptoms, he was sent to hospital immediately for further investigation. “At the hospital Joe had a blood test, the first of many needles that he was to encounter on his long journey, before two doctors took us and our scared, confused two-yearold into a room and told us the most devastating news. “We were shocked, speechless and just sobbed; never in a million years do you expect something like this to happen to your child.” Joe’s name, constructed in three dimensions at his exact

height, with a summary of his blood cancer experience, featured alongside other patients’ names and stories and plinths highlighting facts about blood cancer in the artwork. Pharmaceutical company Janssen commissioned artist Paul Cocksedge to create the installation. next to St Paul’s Cathedral. Leanne said: “Joe’s life became very difficult and scary – 3½ years of tests, procedures, transfusions, chemotherapy, steroids, hair loss, pain and endless hospital stays.” Joe finished treatment in June 2013 and he has been cancer free since. Leanne added: “Despite all that he has been through, Joe is a happy boy and takes everything in his stride. “Watching him fight cancer has changed our lives forever and taught us never to take anything for granted. “We were happy for Joe to be featured in the installation as it highlights the fact that blood cancer can affect any one of us at any time, including children. “Blood cancer needs to be more acknowledged and so raising awareness of this devastating disease is very important to us.”

3D magic on way for Palace pantomime MAGICAL 3D effects have been promised at this winter’s panto at Mansfield Palace Theatre.

Further cast members for Jack And The Beanstalk have also been revealed. Andrew Tucker, cultural services manager, said: “A major part of the magic of pantomime is to be found in the special effects. “This is the first time our audiences will be wowed by 3D and we can’t wait to experience the excited reaction of our crowds.” Rebecca Wheatley, perhaps best known as receptionist Amy Howard from TV’s Casualty, will play the Vegetable Fairy. Rebecca, who scored top 10 singles with Everlasting Love and Stay With Me Baby in 1998 and 2000 respectively and is also a presenter on Loose Women and The Wright Stuff, said: “Acting, singing, presenting... it’s all telling stories. “I love to tell stories. Panto is absolutely the one thing that you have to do every Christmas. It’s tradition. “There will be lots of surprises and the show will have heart, fun and games — I think we all need a bit of that.” The panto dame, Dame Trott, will be played by Craig Ansell, who is known for taking traditional characters and providing his own unique spin. He said: “Poisoned apples, rusty old lamps, ticking crocodiles and gargantuan beanstalks do not compare to two shows a day in heels… and Cinderella thought she had issues!” Rebecca and Craig join previously announced stars Mark Little and Adam Moss in the cast for the show. Comedian Adam is returning to Mansfield for a third time due to overwhelming customer demand, this time taking on the role of Silly Billy. He promised: “More madness and Mossy mayhem! I am really thrilled to be coming back to such a lovely place as Mansfield Palace Theatre to spend time with the incredible audiences and staff there.”

REBECCA Wheatley and Craig Ansell have joined the cast for Jack And The Beanstalk at the Palace Theatre, Mansfield, which already included Mark Little (right). Mark – who is most well-known for his role as Joe Mangel in Neighbours – will be playing the character audiences will love to hate, Fleshcreep. “I like playing the baddy, but will be more nutty than scary,” he said. “I want the kids to have banter with me without being terrified.” The pantomime opens on Saturday, 2nd December and runs until Sunday, 7th January, with relaxed and signed performances available on certain dates. Go to www.mansfieldpalace.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01623 633133 to book tickets.

Following a recent report by Kellogg’s, which highlighted a potential funding crisis across the UK for school breakfast clubs, Kellogg’s managing director Dave Lawlor, said: “Great progress has been made since the 1990s to increase the number of schools offering pupils a safe and fun environment that provides a nutritious breakfast. “That’s why each year the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards celebrate the fantastic people who make these clubs happen every day in schools up and down the country. Many schools fund their breakfast club through the school budget but according to teachers cuts in school funding is making this more challenging. In the report commissioned by Kellogg’s titled ‘The future of school breakfast clubs: a funding crisis in the UK’* 43 per cent of teachers said their breakfast club could face closure in the next 3 years. But many schools are desperately trying to keep their clubs open.

Dave Lawlor continued: “The challenge for schools, government and partners in private and third sectors is to ensure that we help to sustain as many breakfast clubs as possible in the future. We will continue to support breakfast clubs because we believe that every child deserves the best start to the day.” Kellogg’s has supported breakfast clubs for the last 19 years and offers funding, food and training to 3,000 clubs across the UK. Over the school holidays, little shoppers were able to enjoy ‘creating a summer t-shirt’, ‘cap decorating’, ‘sand art’, ‘cupcake cone designing’, ‘sandpaper castle collage’ and putting together a ‘back to school healthy lunchbox’.

The next Four Seasons’ Buzzy B Club will be taking place on Sunday 24 September, starting at 11am running until 3pm. For more information on this and all the events that are taking place at Four Seasons Shopping Centre, please visit the website at www.fourseasonsshopping.co.uk

Rebekah O’Neill, Four Seasons Shopping Centre Manager, said she was thrilled with the club’s popularity over the school holidays. She said: “We have had a phenomenal response, with so many families making the most of the variety of activities we have been offering,” said Rebekah. “Each themed session welcomed up to 150 children and provided youngsters with the opportunity to put their imaginations to the test in an exciting environment.” For those that attended, they were able to collect a variety of stamps each time they went to a Buzzy B Club event. There was also the opportunity to collect a host of seaside themed gifts, including a stick of rock, a beach ball and a bucket and spade. “Everyone who took part showed such enthusiasm for the various projects and were eager to learn how to do each task,” Rebekah said. “We are now really looking

Youth Zone High note for local choir 29

Send your news and photos to chloe@news-journal.co.uk

MANSFIELD’S world famous Cantamus Girls’ Choir added to its numerous awards with medal success at the European Choir Games.

The 38 girls also appeared on television as hundreds of groups came together for the competition, which featured mixed choirs of many ages.

Cantamus not only brought home three golds and a silver in the Youth Choir, Sacred Songs, Unaccompanied Songs and Jazz and Music Theatre classes, but the girls were among six international choirs invited to sing at the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival in Riga, Latvia.

Well-known composer and conductor John Rutter told Cantamus director Ann Irons that he knew of the choir’s fine reputation and was pleased to see their high standard was continuing. The artistic director of games organiser

Interkultur invited Cantamus to its future events. The girls were congratulated by people when they walked through the streets or travelled on trams.

On one occasion when they spontaneously burst into song, a tram passenger said he would not get off at his stop because he wanted to hear more.

Ofsted praise For R.E.A.L. Independent School At the end of last term, R.E.A.L. Independent School was visited by Ofsted. After a rigorous inspection process, we are absolutely delighted to announce that Ofsted awarded the school a ‘good’ rating overall with two out of five areas inspected classed as ‘outstanding’.

The report gives a glowing reflection of our brilliant school, stating that the “senior leaders are united in their unceasing drive for excellence,” and that “an environment of high expectations and continual improvement permeates all levels of the school,” with staff “dedicated to improving opportunities for vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils.” The inspector classed the ‘effectiveness of leadership and management’ of the school as outstanding, highlighting that “a major strength of the school is the high quality of relationships between staff and pupils.” The ‘personal development, behaviour and welfare’ area was also judged to be outstanding, recognising that: “The excellent quality of relationships between staff and pupils enables pupils to develop respect for themselves and for adults.” A key finding from the Ofsted inspection was that “pupils make outstanding improvements in their behaviour and attendance once they have developed confidence in the exemplary care and individual support provided by staff.” Nikki Purcell, head teacher at R.E.A.L. Independent School, said: “It is marvellous that the inspection has highlighted the hard work and high expectations of staff

across the school and also that it recognises the quality of relationships between staff and learners “ Staff at all levels within our school have worked hard in partnership with parents/ carers and learners themselves to help those in our care achieve great things and make progress in all areas of life, including academic and social. “We are very pleased with the outcome and will continue in our efforts to provide a high quality of education and care for the young people who are on our roll. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all learners, staff, parents/carers and professionals working alongside us for their hard work and support over the years. Together we have built something great.” Craig Wilkie, governing body Representative said: “The bovernors are so thrilled

to be part of our amazing story of success at the R.E.A.L. Independent School. We are delighted that Ofsted recognised the fantastic work of the children and young people, leadership, staff and of course, the headteacher Nikki Purcell — not just during the inspection, but during each and every day throughout the year. “The energy and determination of the whole of the team at Blidworth and Concorde House bases, to put children and young people first and build a world class curriculum around their needs, has contributed to this fantastic outcome. “At the heart of all the staff efforts are the needs of the children and young people. We are looking to build on the successes outlined in this report, and reflect on ways to enhance our provision in our determined effort to give the children and young people at Real Independent School our very best; now and in future years.”

Wipe out those kitchen germs Ask 100 people which room in the house they think harbours the most germs and most would probably say the bathroom. But they'd be wrong. One scientific experiment showed the least contaminated place in the house was the toilet seat, and concluded that most people would be safer making a sandwich on top of the toilet bowl than in the kitchen. Yes, it is actually a household kitchen which is the most dangerous when it comes to nasty little bacteria, and it can be a mini war zone when it comes to battling the micro bugs to keep yourself and your family free from infection and illness. They lurk everywhere: down drains, in sinks and waste bins, on work surfaces and cutting boards, in the fridge, in the oven, on the floor, and on cleaning cloths, sponges, tea towels and hand towels. A single bacteria cell can multiply into more than 8 million cells in less than 24 hours and the number of bacteria it takes to make people sick can range from as few as 10 up to millions. And we all know how unpleasant tummy bugs can be.

But it is food preparation where the greatest danger lies. Domestic goddess Nigella Lawson uses disposable vinyl gloves, calling them her 'CSI gloves' as they are like the gloves used by the forensic teams. Quick, easy and light to slip on and off, they protect your hands (and those lovely long decorated finger nails if you have them!) from germs and smells too. The pungent pong of onions, garlic, fish and raw meat can be tricky to get rid of, so wearing gloves to handle them is the perfect answer. Kitchen sponges are also major offenders of germ-harbouring; each can contain up to 50 million of the bacteria that like to live in the holes and crevices. During lab tests, even faecal bacteria was found on kitchen sponges and dishcloths. The worst kinds of germs are found in the kitchen sink, and

thoroughly wiping the sink and counters with a sponge will only spread them all over the kitchen. But did you know that both kitchen sponges and the new type of microfibre cleaning cloths can now be sanitized via a quick burst in the microwave? And before you put your handbag or shopping bags on your kitchen counters, remember where they were last: on the floor; in the back of your car; on the pavement when you took them out of the boot. They are covered in germs, so don't put your bags on the worktops. With all the affordable hygiene aids available in the supermarket or online these days and by observing a few simple kitchen rules, there really isn't any excuse for not being a queen - or king - of clean.

But it only takes a few simple precautions to keep the kitchen squeaky clean and your family safe. One good idea is to have a selection of cheerful rubber gloves for cleaning the surfaces and doing other household chores. Colour-coding is a good idea so the ones you wear for washing the floor or cleaning windows are never the same as the ones you use for the washing up or cleaning surfaces.

Jobs in the garden for October If you have not feed your lawn there is still time to do so. Autumn lawn food is high in potassium that slows growth down and helps protect the lawn from frost damage. It will also help the grass resist attack by diseases like red thread, dollar spot and fusarium patch, all fungus diseases that can attack weak or damaged turf. With that in mind it is important not to walk on the grass in frosty weather as the blades of grass brake when frozen letting the disease in via the wounds.

It is a good time to start feeding the birds as natural foods will less abundant. Once you have started feeding however it is important to keep it up especially in cold snaps. Remember to keep the bird bath topped up as well as water is just as important to wildlife survival. If you have problems with squirrels as I do, there are plenty of bird feeders now with squirrel baffles build in. I also but nuts and other food out for the squirrels as well as they can be very entertaining.

It is also a good time to start general tidying up by pruning climbing roses and cutting back herbaceous plants that have finished flowering. In the veg garden it’s time to plant spring cabbage and these can be obtained as young plants in the garden centre if you haven’t grown your own from seed. It is also a good time to divide rhubarb crowns and perhaps take some into a shed for forcing next spring. Any tender plants used outside in the summer should now be moved to conservatory or green house for winter protection. Alternatively you could wrap them in fibre flees which allows them to breath but keeps the frost off. This can be purchased as readymade bags or by the meter for bigger plants.

Give hedges a last trim and if you need a new hedge barefoot plants are still available and are a very cost effective way of creating a hedge.

Sow sweet peas now in cold frames to get early cropping next year and clear out summer bedding replanting with spring flowering annuals like, Violas, pansy’s, forget-me-nots, Wall flowers, and bellis daisies. Giving them a good feed with tomato or rose food to get them established Enjoy your gardening By Brian Reece Chartered Horticultur-

3 ways to keep that better you in Autumn and Winter Stop us if you've heard this one before. An adult human decides to kick start a new health regime the moment Britain's weather system starts to perk up, then once the clouds come back and make the sky that perpetual dark grey colour we have for most of the year they struggle, stumble and fall off their health bandwagon.

It's a familiar story for a reason- it's harder to maintain exercise routines and even a good diet when everything outside looks as appealing as spending the evening on a Yorkshire moor, alone, in a thunderstorm. The mornings are as good as night time, the air colder, the rain somehow wetter and the wind, well, let's not go into the wind. The result is we could all do with a little extra help and motivation. With that in mind we've come up with a few ideas on ways you can keep your head up, and eyes on the prize; even when every lazy bone in your body is crying out to be left alone with some

tomato soup, a duvet and some crap TV.

Learn about seasonal shopping This can be easier said than done, but trying to shop seasonally is great for two reasons. Firstly, you reduce the environmental impact- so in the most selfish way of looking at things you'll feel better about yourself. On top of that, it will improve your overall knowledge of what can be cooked and when, opening up new options for healthy, seasonal dishes and leaving microwave meals and pizzas in the chilled section. Concentrate on your immune system If things are getting darker, and it has been proven that our immune systems are less effective at night, then it's probably wise to make sure you have yours as fully stocked as possible. This means focusing on foods with plenty of vitamins and minerals, and a great way to do that is with living, or 'raw' foods. And no, that doesn't mean

blue steak. Also remember taking in iron and zinc is important, if necessary consider supplements. Yoga We know what you're thinking- another middle class wannabee bohemian ranting about striking admittedly difficult poses before probably heading off in their oversized, petrol-guzzling car to their desirable Victorian terrace that's actually round the corner. Well, so what!? Yoga is a fantastic way to get really good exercise without having to brave the elements, offering a beneficial all-round workout, and can be helpful to anyone with back, limb and joint aches or pains (just consult an expert first).

Skin Food is the best kept beauty secret It’s full of goodness- plant actives of calendula, chamomile, rosemary leaf extract and lavender, enveloped in a soothing base of natural waxes and pure plant oils including almond and sunflower seed oil. Everyone should have one handy for use. It’s the most versatile product you can buy; a tube of skin food is sold every 30 seconds. It’s 100% natural and smells heavenly. You can use it on areas of rough skin, on your face to deeply nourish overnight or as a masque. Models at London fashion week use it to protect their skin under heavy make up. You can use it on hair ends, on cheek bones to high light or feet to nourish. It’s used by gardeners, builders, plumbers, fishermen, surgeons as well as supermodels, actresses and pop stars, like Julia Roberts, Adele, Victoria Beckham. It has been produced by the worldwide company, Weleda, since 1996 so you know that there has been no animal testing and each ingredient is checked and only accepted if it is the highest standard. There are NO synthetic colours, fragrances, parabens, preservatives or mineral oils. Weleda

believe that it is important to look after the planet so the ingredients are sustainable and the packaging is recyclable. Like all the Weleda skin care range, it has a high content of essential oils so needs no preservatives. If you would like to try it before you buy, Weleda advisors Like Wendy Lowe of Kirkby in Ashfield offer a special service: You can try a small sample, you can have a free skin consultation and luxury Weleda facial with no obligation to buy. You can have a 30 day guarantee period on anything you do buy. There is also an event programme, where you can share a Weleda experience with friends, either checking out the face creams,; or soaking feet in a foot bowl and trying all the bath milks, body washes, oils and lotions; learning about detoxing the body and products to use ie clean beauty without toxins; mother and baby and numerous other types of events. For any hostess holding an event, there are special gifts and she receives 15% in gifts of all sales at her event. You can contact Wendy on 01623 755891 or 07757 057808. Email: wendy.lowe@

Arnold Leisure Centre has reopened its doors after essential roof replacement After a three month closure for essential maintenance and repair work, Arnold Leisure Centre has reopened. A new external roof and internal suspended ceiling has been installed along with a new lighting system in the pool area, upgrade of the heating system and work has also been done to improve the interior of the centre. The changing facilities have also been improved with the installation of new hair dryers and straighteners. The roof has been installed with energy efficient insulation which will reduce the costs of the upkeep of the pool by keeping the 25 metre swimming pool cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The centre, situated near Arnold town centre is also home to the Bonington Cinema and Theatre, which has had a new heating and cooling system installed alongside the recently installed state-of-the-art high definition cinema screen. Coun Henry Wheeler, portfolio holder for housing, health and well-being, said:“I’d like to thank the residents, parents and swimming clubs for their patience whilst we had this essential work done. The swimming pool looks great.”

Heritage craft day success at Minster (Continued from page 1) Work included stained glass, stonemasonry, brick lime pointing, traditional English plasterwork, clockmaking, church textiles, calligraphy, furniture making, mediaeval tile-making and mud walling.

Experts were on hand from local groups to answer questions from the steady stream of visitors. Only once did the outside exhibitors have to dash for cover in the north porch of the cathedral. The event opened to the public at 10.00am and closed at 4.00pm, and throughout the day exhibitors and visitors were served tea, coffee and cake, provided by an enthusiastic group of volunteers, with money raised from sales going towards the funding of the Minster Time Travelling project. Organiser, Alan Wahlers, said: “All seemed to go well with a steady flow of visitors throughout the day and good reports from both visitors and exhibitors. Thanks go out to all those who helped put on the day and the many visitors who passed through the doors.” NBPT are always looking for support from the public...further details can be obtained from Jane Harrison on01636 819555. www.nbpt.co.uk.

What is a community-based defibrillator or AED? fibrillators (cPAD) have a very important part to play in helping save lives in rural communities.

SUDDEN cardiac arrest happens around 140,000 times a year in the UK, making it one of the UK’s largest killers – equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every day.

cPAD schemes are reckoned to be about 10 times more effective in saving a life post-hospital than other community schemes alone.

The potential for saving a life is dependent upon time — the faster medical help can be attained, the better the chance of survival.

Your community needs to decide if you want one, but as SCA can happen to anyone at any time, and is not age related, it is better safe than sorry! Try timing yourself from your nearest ambulance station.

To try to give people in Blidworth and Ravenshead a greater chance of survival, the Abbey Medical Group Patient Participation Group is raising money to fund community-based defibrillator units. Currently we have funds amounting to £2,000 but we need much more to have several units based in our communities. Volunteer staff will be trained to provide the service. It is hoped other organisations in our communities will join us in this project. A defibrillator is a computerised medical device that delivers an electrical current through the chest, aiming to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm and allowing it to pump again. Rapid response using automated technology can significantly improve the quality of life of a survivor, as the longer the brain is starved of oxygen, the more damage that can occur. An AED is a portable defibrillator especially designed for people with little or no medical background. When applied to the victim, voice commands and screen messages will guide the

user step-by-step through the process and its intelligent technology will only allow it to shock a ‘shockable’ heart rhythm. AED technology opens a window for the public to take on a key role to support emergency services who would otherwise be hindered by the time it takes to reach the victim.

On November 17th we are holding a fundraising Quiz Night at Ravenshead Village Hall. (See the advert in this newsletter). Of you want to get involved or know more, ring Gilly 07816 933429.

It is argued that AEDs should be as broadly deployed as fire extinguishers and first aid kits. Is there a need? CLINICAL studies suggest you have less than five minutes from the event to save the life. This decreases by up to 23% per minute. In rural areas it takes time to get medical help, so Community Public Access De-

Change your life - Stop smoking this October THE NHS is encouraging people to stop smoking for 28 days during October — and if you quit smoking for that length of time you are five times more likely to stop permanently. Thousands of people are taking advantage of this opportunity and there is a lot of free help and advice online at: https:// campaignresources.phe.gov.uk/resources/ campaigns/6-stoptober/overview Here are just a few reasons to quit smoking: •Smoking kills about 80,000 people in the UK every year – that’s almost enough people to fill Wembley Stadium. •90% of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. •The heart of a smoker beats 10,000 a

day more than a non-smoker. •An average smoker will die 10 years earlier than a non-smoker. •Smoking 20 a day will mean you spend almost £48,000 over the next 20 years. •Children exposed to a smoky atmosphere are more likely to suffer from breathing problems, allergies and chest infections. •If you smoke your children are twice as likely to smoke when they are adults. There are so many reasons to give up

smoking and hypnotherapy is one of the finest treatments available that can help people. If you really want to quit this destructive habit then our two-hour smoking cessation treatment plan can help you to achieve your goal. How do you like your steak? 1)Rare 2)Medium Rare 3)Medium 4)Medium Well 5)Well Done

According to a survey by trade magazine Caterer and Hotelkeeper, the most popular dinner menu in British restaurants in the 1980s included steak: being Prawn Cocktail, Steak and Black Forest gateau. Steaks can be cooked at different temperatures, or for different lengths of time. The resulting cooked steak ranges from blue (very rare) to well done. The most common characteristics of a rare steak is a soft, cold, red middle. The outside is seared for flavour, while the inside is cooked to suit the diner's preference. Steaks cooked well-done are typically cooked throughout the entire cut of meat. For example, a Fillet Steak cooked well-done will not have any pinkness in the middle when sliced. Uncooked beef steak can be served raw, such as in Steak Tartare or Beef Carpaccio. My favourite is Rib Eye and as the name suggests, from a cow's rib section. It has a wonderful rich flavour and is very tender. Because there are pockets of fat in the

steak, it’s also great for roasting as a joint. Best enjoyed medium rare. Key insider tips: Be very careful when cooking rib eye steaks. The best way is to cook it with the bone. Make sure you are cooking on a red hot surface and leave it to rest a bit longer than other steaks. Served with a nice Stilton Sauce, Homemade Chips, SautÊed Mushrooms and Beer Battered Onion Rings.

A very British addiction Forget cigarettes, alcohol and even drugs, there is a new addiction sweeping the nation - snackoholism.

A survey by Diet Chef has uncovered some shocking truths about British snacking behaviour - not least that more than one in 10 of us would rather snack than have sex. A third of us would rather give up alcohol than snacks and 13% of smokers said they'd rather kick their nicotine habit than give up chocolate, biscuits and crisps. As a nation, the number of snacks we are consuming has reached colossal proportions. Our snack of choice is crisps - 61% of Brits admit to eating at least one packet a day and some scoff as many as five or six. This equates to a staggering 48 million packets of crisps being consumed every day by the UK's adult population. Add to this 45 million chocolate bars and the 78 million biscuits and cakes we eat every day and it is no wonder we have an obesity crisis. One in 10 of the people surveyed have either a burger, a pizza or a portion of chips as a snack every day, showing we no longer understand the difference between a snack and a meal. Yet only 14% of the people surveyed knew how many calories something as basic as an average portion of chips contained. Diet Chef's nutritionist Caron Leckie says: "Our survey shows the extent to which snacking has got out of control. Most of the people we surveyed said they snack out of habit or boredom, which shows people are eating without thinking, not out of

Some of these steaks are not that poplar in

necessity.

"It can be difficult to curb or change snacking habits as there are many different components involved - sometimes we snack out of hunger, boredom, cravings or just pure habit. Identifying our snacking ways and preparing ourselves is the first step to snacking success." Caron's 10 steps to avoiding snacking: * Identify what - Keeping a food diary can help you identify your snacking reality. * Identify where - Once you know what your snacks are, you need to consider where you are most likely to snack - then clear out your snack stash. * Identify when - Knowing when you snack can reveal the trigger. When you've sussed out your snacking patterns, you're ready to confront them. * Find a healthier alternative - Try a low calorie chocolate drink instead of chocolate or popcorn instead of crisps. * Distract yourself - Occupy your mind with other things - go for a walk, phone a friend, get busy cleaning or ironing, read a book, take a bath, paint your nails etc to get your mind off those treats. * Avoid tricky situations - Take a packed lunch to work to avoid the temptation of shops, and cut back on tea or coffee if you usually have biscuits too. * Cut the portions - You can make anything instantly healthier by cutting the portions

- this way you get a little of what you fancy, just in a smaller package. * Fill up on fruit and veg - Aim for at least 5 a day, so if you feel yourself reaching for a snack, make it fruits or vegetables instead. * Make small changes - If you deprive yourself of everything that you like and that is habitual, it's much harder, and is likely to end in a cycle of deprivation and bingeing. * Don't forget drinks - Whether it's a fizzy drink, orange juice or the mid-morning caramel latte - they add up, so choose a healthier alternative like green tea or water.

September - A nearly month With the 2017-18 season now under way, Rainworth MW find themselves tucked cosily in mid-table as the deadline for this month’s ‘Sherwood’ nears. It has been a rather odd few weeks for the Wrens who, despite having exited both the FA Cup and the FA Vase at the first hurdle, did find themselves top of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division table for a few days at the end of August, shortly after the last issue of your newsletter went to print. That followed three successive victories, at home to Scunthorpe-based Bottesford Town then away to both Maltby and Bridlington Town. So it was a happy manager Craig Denton who set off for his wedding on 26th August, leaving the legendary Chris Waddle to take charge for the day – although Chris’ son Jack was not playing, being a guest at the wedding along with assistant boss Rob Poulter.

But while Chris was at the altar making his vows, things back at the Wrens’ Nest were taking something of a turn for the worse, and the prestige of having the ex-England star in charge for the day did not work out quite as planned. The side slumped to a 5-0 home defeat by Pontefract, who promptly replaced them at the top of the table. That result was put into some perspective by the fact that for Pontefract it was the start of, as I write, six successive games in which they have hit five goals. Nevertheless, some pride needed to be restored on the trip to Harrogate Railway the following Saturday. I was unable to make the trip, but the match reports indicated that it had been a fairly one-sided contest, the only down side being that the dominant team on the day had somehow contrived to lose 4-1. Supporters, then, feared the worst when big-spending promotion favourites Handsworth formed the next opposition, but in

probably their best display of the season they held the high fliers to a draw. On the day one point should have been three, but ‘should have’ has been the story of September so far. Unfortunately a 2-0 defeat at Long Eaton ended the Vase run before it had begun, but a return to winning ways saw neighbours Clipstone beaten 4-1, prior to yet another ‘should have’ in losing 1-0 at Garforth Town. By the time this is in print both Albion Sports, from Bradford, and Staveley will have visited, and fixtures for the coming month are: 30th September Pickering Town (away); 7th October Worksop Town (home); 11th Albion Sports (away); 14th Hemsworth MW (home); 21st, Athersley Recreation (away); 28th Thackley (home). Do get yourselves down to the Kirklington Road Stadium for the home games and with your support help to give the village a team to be proud of.
