Let no lonely people pass us by Just come and sit at our table To stir the bowl where love is born To enter the oven of a heart to rise. May hope be fulfilled, not heartache now. Mayor of Gedling cycling from coast to coast for charity THE Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Viv McCrossen, has been cycling 170 miles from Bridlington to Morecambe to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Mayor McCrossen travelled with her consort, Ron McCrossen, and daughter Georgina on the epic journey from coast to coast, also known as the Way of the Roses route. The route saw the team pass through the historic towns of York and Lan-
caster, and lesser known gems such as Settle, Pateley Bridge and Ripon.
Councillor McCrossen was sworn in as the Mayor of Gedling in a special ceremony in the Council Chamber in May. Anyone who wants to sponsor her can still do so by emailing civic@gedling.gov. uk or by phone 0115 901 3944. The Mayor said: “For this challenge I won’t be wearing the yellow jersey or my mayoral robes and the only chain will
be on my bike, but I’m determined to complete this 170 mile ride and with the help of the great people of Gedling I hope to raise lots of money for my charity Motor Neurone Disease Association so please support me any way you can. The Mayor’s chosen charity, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on improving access to Motor Neurone Disease care, research and campaigning.
Ron Brooks Mansfield helps local swimmer AY-GO for gold RECORD-BREAKING Junior Swimmer Elliot Clogg from Clipstone, Nottinghamshire, will enjoy a year of sponsored motoring from Ron Brooks Toyota Mansfield.
The company have supplied Elliot with free use of a new Toyota AYGO x-press, which will help him make the twice-daily 60-mile round-trip to the National Training Centre in Loughborough as part of an intense training regime. The demanding training programme involves 4:30am starts Monday-Friday for 48 weeks of the year and Elliot fits all this in around college work & organising meal plans & nutrition. The AYGO x-press has been liveried up with gold decals, in keeping with the athletics tradition of ‘going for gold’. The economical 1.0-litre petrol engine averages up to 68.9mpg while the citycar proportions and easy driving style makes the AYGO perfect for young drivers – 17-year-old Elliot only passed his driving test in June this year. Elliot holds the British Junior Records for the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke in a 25 metre pool as well as the English Junior record for the 100m freestyle. His dream is to swim at international level and is targeting making the national squad for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo – of which Toyota Motor Corporation are a global sponsor. Mike Lane, centre principal at Ron Brooks Mansfield, said “It is with great delight that we are able to extend this
offer of vehicle sponsorship to Elliot. “Here at Ron brooks we are dedicated to developing new and exceptional talent and we believe that Elliot has what it takes to make a huge impact in his sport.” Elliot was understandably over the moon, and commented “I can’t express how much it means to be supported in this way. “So grateful for what Ron Brooks have done for me. Massive thank you!” Elliot’s father, Derek, said “We can’t
thank Ron Brooks enough really for the tremendous support this offer represents.” The agreement began in August and runs for an initial 12 months.

Newark residents ‘Get Happy’ with help of ukulele band TO CELEBRATE the completion of works at their community garden, tenants at Vale View — a scheme managed by housing provider, Newark and Sherwood Homes — were treated to a special ukulele performance in the sun. Fourteen Newark and Sherwood Homes tenants came together to enjoy a performance by the University of the Third Age (U3A) Happy Band on the garden’s newly refurbished patio. The garden was recently revived by 12 members of staff from Newark and Sherwood Homes, Henry Boot, Devlin Decorating and Willow Bank Flooring. The Happy Band is run by volunteers from across Newark with a passion for playing the ukulele. During the event, the band played hits from “You Are My Sunshine” to “Rockin' All Over The World” for Newark and Sherwood Homes tenants. Speaking of the event, U3A member co-ordinator of the Happy Band, Bob Cawson said: “We are a group of retired and semi-retired people who enjoy coming together and playing ukulele for others. The Happy Band’s aim is to give back to the local community and ultimately put a
smile on someone’s face with a happy and uplifting song. “We thoroughly enjoyed performing at Vale View, especially in the new garden, which was neat and tidy – ready for a sum-
mer in the sun!” The Newark (U3A) is a learning co-operative for older people that enables members to share educational, creative and leisure activities.
Jobs in the garden for September LET’s hope we have an Indian summer after all that rain in August Your summer bedding is probably looking a bit tired now but if you keep dead-heading and feeding it may well last you until the first frosts. If you decide to replant with spring and autumn bedding these are coming into the garden centres now and the old favourite winter pansies are always a good choice. Did you know that if you cut them back after flowering in late spring they will flower again all summer? Other favourites of mine are wall flowers and these come in dwarf and standard forms and can be bought as bare root plants in bunches of ten or in six packs like other bedding. The DIY and garden centres should be full of spring bulbs now and it is a good idea to under plant spring bedding with bulbs to add another dimension to your bedding displays I like a combination of forget-me-nots under-planted with crocus for an early display and tulips for a late splash of colour. It is a good time to split old rhubarb crowns to help regenerate them, and perhaps bring some into a dark cool shed for forcing in the spring. Start dividing the herbaceous plants that have finished flowering so that they
roots can get re-established while the soil is still warm. In the dahlia borders, stake taller dahlias to stop the stems from falling over and remove smaller flower buds, leaving one large bud per stem to get larger more showy flowers. Dead-head them regularly to encourage a side shoot to produce a new flower. Feed the lawn now with a high potassium lawn food to help slow down the growth and help protect the grass from winter frosts later on. If we have that Indian summer you will need to continue cutting for a month or so, but once the cold weather arrives raise the height of the blades and curt less often. Your main crop potatoes should be ready by now and these can be lifted as you need them or all lifted at once and stored in hessian sacks in a cool dark place It’s not too late to grow a green manure crop; this need not be anything special, any leftover seeds will do, especially things like parsnips seed that are only viable for one year. When the seeds have germinated and reached six inches or so high, dig them in as green manure. This will add organic material (colloidal material) to the soil which will improve the crumb structure, increase the soil’s ability to hold on to plant food and water, and
bring nutrients up from deeper in the soil. Enjoy your gardening Brian Reece, chartered horticulturalist

MORE THAN 20,000 Scouts and thousands more schoolchildren from across the country descend on an internationally acclaimed outdoor activity centre in north Nottinghamshire every year – and it has exciting plans to welcome even more from next summer.
Walesby Forest, which is located on the outskirts of Newark, will celebrate its 80th birthday next year after opening originally as a Scout centre in 1938, and will mark the occasion with the opening of its second purpose-built residential lodge. Ian Sinclair is the chief executive at Walesby Forest and he says the centre has gone from strength to strength in recent years. He said: “Walesby started its life as a Scout centre, but over the last 80 years it has grown into much more and we now welcome schoolchildren from across the country as well as thousands of Scouts each and every year. “It’s incredibly important for children to get out of the classroom and experience something different – and those adventures are exactly what we encourage here at Walesby through our residential adventure courses. “We are very excited to be improving our provision for our visitors with the addition of a brand new lodge next year. We have plans for five in total; the first one was built in 2012 and we are expecting the second to be ready in May next year, giving us accommodation for 36 children plus teachers or leaders in the new fully equipped facility. “Over the years we have seen demand for this type of overnight accommodation increase and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming even more children to the centre as a result.” “The developments over the last few years
have included extensive refurbishments of Sherwood and Parker lodges, an extension to our catering facility which can now seat over 200 and the introduction of new activities including an impressive indoor climbing facility.” Alistair Bow, managing director at local firm Thomas Bow City Asphalt, has been chairman at Walesby Forest since 1999 and is very proud of the work being done by Ian and his team. He added: “Walesby is an amazing facility that welcomes thousands of youngsters from across the country all year round and it’s something that I am very pleased to have been involved in for the last 18 years; it has really gone from strength to
strength. “As a business, we work very hard to support local good causes and charities; I believe it is really important to give something back to the community, whether that be through giving our time or by sponsoring sports team for instance. “It makes me very proud to see how successful Walesby has continued to be throughout my tenure as chairman and we are looking forward to seeing the completion of the second lodge in its 80th anniversary year in 2018. It’s exciting.” Thomas Bow is celebrating 150 years in business this year. To find out more about Thomas Bow City Asphalt, visit www. thomasbow.com
Armchair Club backs Taekwondo academy A MANSFIELD sports club has received a £580 donation from a group that dedicates itself to raising money for sport in the area. Mansfield Taekwondo Academy’s Wednesday evening class is pictured accepting the cheque from representatives of the Armchair Club, Geoff Waller (right) and Bill Taylor (third left). Senior coach Adrian Tranter said: “The funding will enable us to invest in two coaches achieving their level two coaching certificate in taekwondo. “This will help secure our development plans to have a safe and welcoming club for everyone who wants to participate in WTF Olympic Taekwondo.”
The Armchair Club, formed in 1982 by local business people, has donated more than £200,000 to local sport.

Sam’s Workplace - A fun place to be Sam’s Workplace is your local community cafe and sweet shop based on Preston Road in Rainworth. We work closely with adults who have a learning disability, offering them a realistic work experience placement, and teaching them relevant cookery and life skills. Our guys mainly come from the local areas and, for some, it is their first interactions with people from their local community. We are extremely proud of the achievements all of our guys have made during the four years we have been open. Each person now has the confidence to come through to the shop and speak with customers (believe us, for some it is a real challenge), and bring the food out to serve you. What seems easy for you is a real mountain to climb for our young people and we are so impressed with their commitment to customer service. Why not come and see what we’ve been up to... During the summer school holidays we’ve been having lots of fun experimenting with milkshake flavours - our bubblegum flavour is delightful (don’t let the blue colour put you off)… it tastes divine.
chocolate. Ok, so it’s not particularly good for anyone dieting, but when it tastes that good, who cares? And while you’re quenching your thirst, why not treat yourself to a decorated cupcake? Our guys have really pushed their artistic boundaries and have thoroughly enjoyed making them. We still make the cupcakes to support the local RAID campaign. And we are still making the biscuits to help fund the pantomime costs for Lake View Primary School students. All available every day… If cakes are not your thing, why not try an ice cream sandwich? They may take a little longer to serve, but they are well worth the wait. As well as all our usual bacon or sausage cobs, mini fry up or just an omelette … our lovely young people are waiting for your visit. Treat yourself - bacon cobs are only £1
If milkshake is not your thing, try our hot chocolate, especially during the wet times (where did the sun go to?) Our hot chocolate comes topped with marshmallows and cream and
Rainworth Methodist Church Congregation swells Many people living in Rainworth are unaware that our small Chapel exists.
They pass by on a daily basis completely unaware that behind the high hedge, next to the hairdresser on Southwell Road, we have a busy meeting hall used by villagers of all ages. We have slimming clubs, art groups, line dancers, Guides and Brownies and training facilities for carers groups as well as weekly religious services. This year, however, as we made plans to repair the roof of the chapel, we discovered that we had extra residents! We found that we had bats in the loft and they had obviously been joining us in our worship for quite a long time.
It soon became clear to us that we could no longer just carry out repairs but had to call in environmental specialists and then ‘BATMAN’ (or ecology consultants).
As bats are a protected species, we would have incurred a substantial fine had we just gone ahead and done the work. The ‘batmen’ originally thought that our bats were a maternity colony who overwintered in the woods behind the Chapel, but after carrying out several night surveys they have established that we have a group of brown long-eared bats who just spend their summer holidays with us. We are now in the process of obtaining a licence to enable the work to be carried out and to ensure that we keep special entry
and exit points for the bats.
‘Batman’ will monitor this work and keep doing so also for quite some time afterwards. We have learnt a lot during this year. We have learnt that starting on an expensive job of work can suddenly escalate in price, but we have also found that by working together we can find a solution. We can’t thank our members and other Chapels enough for coming to our aid. As for the future, I am sure that once the work is completed, the bats and our congregation will have a lovely dry home. Maybe our next project could involve placing cameras in the loft with screens for everyone to observe them. We may all grow to love them in time.

Blidworth Local News Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society news Our August member’s meeting was once again very well attended and this month the guest speaker was Mr Peter Hammond.
Peter’s talk concerned the “Wells and Caves” in Nottingham and he explained how the city sits on a ridge of sandstone that can easily be dug with simple hand tools. Peter also brought along and displayed many extremely interesting items that had been discovered by archaeologists who had spent time excavating the caves. Pottery found here has been dated from between 1270-1300. He also gave details of how these discoveries became the subject of further research, such as items that contained dates and names. Centuries old graffiti or carvings on the walls often uncovered new information or added to existing details already known. Over 800 caves have currently been discovered in Nottingham and others are continually being located during development of the city. The caves had many uses over the years including secret places of worship, Public house storage cellars, living accommodation, air raid shelters and even used as cells for condemned prisoners. Continuing on a similar theme, following the refreshment break, we viewed slides of Blidworth wells (natural and excavated) on the big screen. We then went on to discuss how wa-
ter has been supplied to our village and surrounding area. The link between water supply and water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid was established in the 1850s and the need to supply clean filtered water resulted in a number of local projects some of which can still be seen today. Our next three meeting details are: •5th September - Peter Liddle - 'The Death and Burial of Richard III.' •4th October - Bob Massey - 'Nottingham on Sea'. •7th November - Colin Hobday - 'Derbyshire Delights'. The meetings are in the Function Room of the Blidworth Welfare. Doors are open at 6.45pm. Ample parking is available. New members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is a small charge on the door of £2 to cover refreshments. We are pleased to announce that the Society's book on Blidworth & World War 1 has been reprinted and will be on sale at future meetings and through our website. We would like to see any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy and add to our extensive archive. If you would like more information please contact us through our website. You are also invited to submit articles relating to our local history for consideration for publication on our website. Please refer to the website for further details. We look forward to hearing from you. www.blidworthhistoricalsociety.co.uk Email: blidworthhistory@virginmedia.com
Giving patients a voice As things change in health and care nationally, locally and within our GP surgeries, it becomes so important to involve patients and carers in improving our services. Parish Council
Blidworth Parish Council held a Summer Gala on Sunday, 30th July, at the Blidworth Miners’ Welfare. The event was very well attended and was a great family day out. Fortunately the weather stayed dry. There was a variety of stalls, catering outlets and charity tombolas. There were children’s activities, trampolines and rides and Jerry Green Dog Rescue held a fun dog show, which attracted a variety of fury friends. We also held a Great Blidworth Bake Off’ where a variety of cakes were displayed, sampled and then auctioned off. The Parish Council have sent all proceeds from the event to A Dollar For Dawson and raised £470. The East Midlands In Bloom awards are being held on the 13th September in Boston, where we are very much looking forward to hearing if we have scooped an award for the Village. I’m sure you will agree that Blidworth is looking fantastic following the hard work of Christine Dabbs and her volunteers who have worked tirelessly weeding, planting and watering. Sadly we didn’t manage to secure a place in the Best Kept Village Competition 2017. Here’s a reminder of some of the items that are happening within the Village: Saturday 25th November – Blidworth Parish Council Christmas Lights Switch on Event and Christmas Fair There will be lots of stalls, arts and crafts, Music, food and drink, face painting, music and carols throughout the afternoon. Elsa and Anna from Frozen 1pm-2pm. Santa arrives at 2.30pm with gifts for the children. For further details contact the clerk on 490358, or Cllr Ellaine Hurst on 490358. Pensioners Christmas Party – Wednesday, 6th December, at Blidworth Miners’ Welfare More details to follow on how to book, times etc. Speed Reduction Petition — Members of Blidworth Parish Council have continuing with the petition to request that the speed limit be reduced from 60mph to 40mph from the junction of Mansfield Road, Blidworth/ Warsop Lane to Rainworth. If you would like to sign this petition please call into the Parish Office, or contact one of our councillors And finally... The OVO Energy Tour of Britain is coming to the district on Wednesday, 6 September, and is passing through Blidworth. This is the British Cycling premier road cycle event and will be a wonderful spectacle for locals as well as drawing big crowds of visitors to the area. Stage Four –– Mansfield to Newark The route will take in Newstead Abbey, Sherwood Forest and Clumber Park passing through Blidworth before finishing at Sconce and Devon Park in Newark.

Our stall was manned by Margaret Wright, Flo and Courteney Mitchell and Jean Manning. Thankyou to everyone who supported us that afternoon. On Wednesday evening, 19th July, members participated in a visit to Park Farm Gardens, Crink Lane, Southwell, where our hosts, Mr and Mrs Johnston, gave us enthusiastic and informative guided tours of their beautiful and interesting gardens, finishing with a lovely picnic on the terrace, enjoying the extensive views. Since the club’s inauguration 16 months ago, it has gone from strength to strength. We now have over 50 members, apparently one of the largest memberships in the region and our facilities are also amongst the best in the country. We have plenty of parking and now have three portable buildings that house a meeting room, an office, a dining room and storage plus an outdoor seating area. The terrain is set in a beautiful country spot on the very edge of Rainworth, accessible from the old Rufford Colliery Pit Lane between the venue and the football ground. We have an abundance of wildlife with a visiting kestrel, buzzard and lots of rabbits. Our members have planted up the surrounding gardens, which are beginning to mature, despite the efforts of the rabbits to eat everything. The terrain consists of 14 full-sized pistes, which can be made into 19 for competitions if necessary. We play every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday (1pm–4pm) and we have a competition called the Thursday Pairs, spread over the summer months, where we play different clubs from around the area. In July we hosted the Mercia Region Triples Competition, when 70 players enjoyed themselves. There are more events planned for over the winter months. Our members are both local and from wider afield and we welcome anyone who would like to give petanque a go. You don’t need any experience — we have spare sets of boules if you would like to come down to give it a go. If you would like any information, give Morris a call on 01623491935 or just call in and have a game.

Ever tried your hand at fostering? Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Nottinghamshire are constantly looking for foster carers
played a key part in the rehoming process when a foster dog is successfully rehomed. It also gives people who would normally be unable to take in a dog long term due to other commitments, with an alternative. You can find out more about fostering our dogs by contacting our Nottinghamshire team on 01623 792886.
Foster one of our dogs! We rely on fosterers to provide temporary homes for the dogs in our care whilst they are looking for their forever home. We need more people willing to open up their homes to dogs as some of our dogs do become very stressed in a kennel environment whilst they are waiting to find their forever home. When you foster a dog you'll be freeing up space in our centres so that we can rescue more dogs in desperate need. Benefit to our Dogs Dog fostering is an important role. It helps improve their chance of finding a new home. Some dogs don't cope well in a kennel environment. This is where we need people
to take them in to provide them with a real home, even if it is only on a temporary basis. Benefits to people Fostering dogs can also be a pleasurable experience. It’s rewarding to know that you
In just six months The Mansfield Building Society has almost reached its two year fundraising target for Macmillan Cancer Support. Staff at the Society launched with Macmillan as its charity partner in December 2016 with a commitment to raise at least £5,000 for the charity by December 2018. Fundraising is already well on track after staff have completed numerous events to help support the charity. In March, staff completed a 40-hour bikeathon in the Mansfield branch, cycling during opening hours. During May, a team of 15, including family and friends, climbed Mount Snowdon. And in June, four members of staff hiked from the society’s branch in Chesterfield to its branches in Sutton and Kirkby before finishing at its Mansfield head office. Macmillan support cancer patients and those affected by cancer by providing guidance, healthcare and financial support ensuring that no one faces cancer alone. As the society’s charity partner, all funds raised for Macmillan by The Mansfield will be used to support the charity’s local activity in Mansfield, Ashfield and Chesterfield. Meg Fisher, customer service manager, who was part of the team that endured the six-hour hike to reach the peak of Mount Snowdon in torrential weather, said: “Macmillan is a charity that means so much to so many. The incredible support that they give to those living with cancer means that
the people affected can still take back some control in their lives. “We’ve climbed mountains, walked miles and cycled for hours because staff here are committed to raising money for Macmillan and the great work they do.” Stacey Smalley, Macmillan fundraising manager for Nottinghamshire, said: “I am totally amazed at the amount of energy and enthusiasm everyone at The Mansfield has for raising money for Macmillan.
Mansfield Building Society raises £4,117 for Macmillan in six months
From the very first meeting, everyone has got involved with ideas and plans. The staff at The Mansfield are such a hardworking bunch and I had every faith they would reach their target. What I didn’t anticipate was how quickly they would get there. “This will make a huge difference to so many people living with cancer through our information centres, helpline and Macmillan professionals working in the community.”

Garden bird of the month The Little Owl is Britain’s smallest owl and is about the size of a Starling. You may be surprised to learn that it is not a native species.
It was introduced in to Britain from the continent during the 1880s. The owls were originally purchased from Italy by wealthy landowners to help keep down garden pests. They soon spread and can now be found in England and Wales with a possible few in southern Scotland. They are mainly found in farmland areas and villages and are often seen during daylight hours when perched on posts, trees, or telephone wires. They are active both day and night but hunt mainly at dawn or dusk and these are usually the best times to see them. They feed on beetles and small birds and mammals and they catch these by swooping down from a perch and chasing them on the ground. Earthworms are included in their diet and they are also known to eat some plants and berries. If they have a surplus of food, they will cache it away in holes. In Greek mythology, the Little Owl was held in high esteem by Pallas Athene, the Goddess of Wisdom and it would often be depicted on
Photo: Jill Pakenham soldiers in battle as it was thought to pro
her shoulder. Ancient Greek pottery, other artefacts and coins were decorated with pictures of the owl. The bird is thought to have been protected and it is understood that many inhabited the Acropolis. The owl would accompany Greek
tect them and if one flew over them before a battle, they read this as a sign of victory. Sherwood Forest Trust, said: “Come and enjoy what promises to be an enjoyable weekend in Sherwood Forest – meet friendly bodgers, charcoal burners, wood turners, conservation organisations and be inspired to get back to nature. “It’s also your chance to find out if you are smarter than the Major Oak, so will you dare to ask this grand ancient oak tree a question? Come and help The Green Man wake the Major Oak from its slumbers.” Sponsoring the Woodland Festival is the Woodhead Group based in Edwinstowe House, which is home to more than 40 businesses in Edwinstowe. The Woodhead Group is an award-winning group of companies that specialise in construction, property management and regeneration. It is part of the company’s vision to celebrate and raise awareness for traditional heritage crafts, and we are proud and privileged to have their support. Robert Woodhead Limited is the contractor who is presently developing a
new car park and access road for the new Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre. Councillor John Cottee, the council’s chairman of the community and place committee, said: “Festival season continues at Sherwood Forest. “On the back of the Robin Hood festival, this popular event is a great celebration of Sherwood Forest and our iconic Major Oak. An array of fascinating traditional and modern woodland crafts and skills will be on display during the event.” The festival runs from 11am – 4pm each day and the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre can be located at NG21 9HN. The festival is also supported by Newark and Sherwood District Council, who are proud to have Sherwood Forest as a major visitor attraction. The festival will also be supporting the national campaign for a new Charter for Trees, Woods and People, which will celebrate the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Charter of the Forest. There are parking charges: Cars - £3 (including blue badge holders) Motorbikes - £1 Minibus and coach - no charge
The world-famous Major Oak branches out to host a festival Join Nottinghamshire County Council and The Sherwood Forest Trust for the only festival in the world that is hosted by a tree. The #MajorOakWoodlandFestival is free and takes place on September 16 and 17 at the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve. Now in its fourth year, The Major Oak Woodland Festival attracts people from all around the world where Sherwood Forest provides the unique back drop of amazing ancient oaks and beautiful birch that set this apart from other woodland festivals. Wonderland Classic & Sports Car Festival It was a gamble with the weather by moving the festival, now in its 17th year, from the original June dates, into July.
But we ‘threw a double-six’ and had glorious weather and a vast array of vehicles on display from the past 85 years of motoring. The event was a total success and we saw vehicles on site ranging from 1930s Austin 7’s, to WWI Jeeps and racing Capris right up to ‘modern classics’ only a few years off the production line. The build-up week was hot and sunny and so the last-minute bookings ‘went through the roof’ with everybody now deciding to camp and make a full weekend of it. First arrivals on Friday morning were the clubs – Fordsport and Rally Orange – closely followed by a steady stream of individual entrants. The festival venue is on the banks of the river Trent just north of Nottingham and
provides a beautiful tranquil setting to camp, BBQ and display your classic car. The festival opened at 4pm on Saturday. The award for ‘Car of the Show’ (Saturday) went to a 3-year restoration 1970s Toyota LandCruiser. With a bar on site, food, live band and a disco, the festival went on well in to the night. Sunday was ‘Show n Shine’ day – with 30+ trophies to be won. This year we celebrated 30 years of our local Capri Club and created a large Capri display for MKI, MKII and MKIII Capri’s. One of our other feature displays was for ‘Endangered Species’ (classics with less than 1% of their production run still on the road). First on to the display was a lovely 1.3Morris Ital 1.3HL – soon to be joined by Cortina’s, Granada’s and many other rare classics. Product from Meguiar’s, Waxoyl and Frankie & Benny’s accompanied the tro-
phies presented in the afternoon to the 16 category winners and runner up. Our competition to find the Most Powerful Sports Car in Nottinghamshire (sponsored by Webcon), went to a 360bhp Ford Sierra Cosworth owned by Richard Barnes and Car of the Show was won by Paul Bostrum’s Ford Escort RS Cosworth. Trophies were awarded for classes ranging from pre 1970s to 21st Century and included such stunning motors as a TR4, Mercedes 420SL, Pontiac Firebird TransAm, Porsche 911 Carrera Sport, Brooklands Capri to name but a few. For the full results, please log onto www. capriclub2000.co.uk and head for the ‘Wonderland’ page. A huge thank you to all our visitors, exhibitors, traders, sponsors and crew. We are planning the 2018 festival for July 7th & 8th – check website for updates and photos from the 2017 event.

Mansfield based Proskins race for Dawson Willcock Mansfield based Proskins are supporting and raising money for a local boy who needs lifesaving treatment for a rare liver cancer. In January this year at 15 months old, Dawson Willcock from Mansfield was diagnosed with a rare 0.9 in one million cancer, Hepatoblastoma. Since that day Dawson has tried several different chemotherapy drugs, none of which have worked. In April 2017, Dawson's family was told even whilst on chemotherapy, the Cancer had spread to Dawson's lungs. There was a last chance chemotherapy treatment to try and Dawson started this treatment in April. On May 17th 2017, Dawson's family were told the heart-breaking news that the chemotherapy treatment had no effect, the lung tumours have increased in size and his Cancer is chemo resistant. Dawson needs lifesaving treatment in America, which is going to cost £500,000. Dawson's family are in talks with a Doctor in Cincinnati, who has cured many children who were classed as terminal in the UK. The plan is, to spread this as far and wide as possible and get as many people as possible to donate, so Dawson can get the treatment he needs to save his life.
Neil French, Managing Director for Proskins says: “We want to raise as much money as we can for Dawson. So anything you can donate, big or small, will really make a difference. Dawson’s family have been a loyal and valued customer of ours, so the team here at Proskins want to raise awareness and money to help Dawson get the treatment he needs.”
Proskins have teamed up with a local event to take part in a 5K and 10K run in Dawson’s local area of Mansfield on Sunday 17th September 2017. Proskins Director, Rugby Legend and the finalist of Channel 4’s The Jump - Jason Robinson will be running alongside the Proskins team to support Dawson and there are also 100 other places available to join together to run (or walk) for Dawson.
Local mums and dads set to bag a bargain at nearly new sales inspired by Dragons Den The popular Mum2mum Markets which started out in Ravenshead in 2016 are celebrating their FIRST BIRTHDAY of holding fabulous events. Parents can sell their children’s outgrown clothes, toys, books and equipment to other mums and dads and keep 100 per cent of the profits at the sales. Events now to take place in Hucknall at The Holgate Academy having previously outgrowing their village venue, with the next event scheduled for 15th October 2017. Local mum and event organizer Lindsey Dudley says “We began holding sales in Ravenshead in 2016 and have been blown away with the response to our events. We’ve welcomed hundreds of buyers and sold out of all stalls at each event, with many repeat sellers. We quickly outgrew the original venue and needed more space so we don’t have to turn sellers away. Moving to The Holgate Academy meant we can provide more stalls and space for sellers, and offer our buyers even more choice, with
great free onsite parking facilities. Its a wonderful community event, bringing families together- and great for the environment too- as its recycling at its very best!” ”Lindsey added: “With Mum2mum Market everyone’s a winner. Buyers can source great quality lightly used goods at a fraction of the high street price and sellers keep 100 per cent of their profits. “There are serious savings to be made by buying second hand. With large items like designer prams selling for around a third of the new price and baby and children's clothes from just 50p, parents can save hundreds of pounds.” Mum2Mum Market will be at The Holgate Academy Lower School, Nabbs Lane Hucknall NG15 6HB on Sunday 15th October 2017 2pm-4pm Admission is £2 on the door, children admitted free, with free admission after 3.30pm. There’s also 241 admission available on the website.

East Midlands ‘Forever Home’ revealed The ideal ‘forever home’ for a resident in the East Midlands is a four-bedroom, detached house in the country, worth £395,745 – and just down the road from the kids, it has emerged. A detailed study also found that we hanker after a property with a driveway, a play room – and somewhere to hang the washing. Other must-haves include a large kitchen and breakfast room, an ample lounge, utility room and dining room. A double garage and conservatory are also essential, as is a study and cloakroom. Ideally, we want to live in a location just 7.9 miles from the office. Good transport links and a pub within a mile and a half are also vital elements. While an ambitious one in three even went as far as to suggest their ‘forever home’ would include a swimming pool and sauna. The detail emerged from a study of 2,000 homeowners carried out by Origin, the leading British manufacturer of bespoke aluminium bi-folding doors, residential doors and windows. Ben Brocklesby, Director at Origin, said: “We wanted to find out more about the concept of the forever home and whether it still existed. Years ago it was not unusual for people to live in the same house for their entire lives, but we’ve certainly seen a shift in this trend as we now live in an average of seven homes throughout our lifetimes. “Interestingly, almost three quarters of people in the region still believe in the concept of a forever home, which shows that the clear majority of homeowners are constantly climbing the property ladder, striving to find a home to live in for the rest of their lives.
“We carried out the research to find out exactly what people want from their forever homes, and if any of the features on their wish list could be added to their existing properties. Among the most sought after elements were a power shower, big windows, a bath and bi-fold or sliding doors – all of which can be incorporated into any home, without the need to move.” Two bathrooms, two en-suites and two reception rooms are also key components. On a national scale, over half of people chose the sea as the perfect view from their windows, followed by a countryside view of either rolling hills or a field of cows. Britain’s least chosen view from the home was, perhaps unsurprisingly, a football stadium. Plenty of natural light was also a musthave for homeowners, with 99 per cent of people saying it was important. Over half said they wanted big windows, while bi-folding or sliding doors that lead out to the garden were also high on the list of features. It also emerged that we dream of spending our years in a street where we are surrounded by friendly neighbours, four of whom we are on first name terms with. A 1,000sq ft garden is the ideal size, according to most Brits. With regard to amenities, our forever home would have everything we needed within a three mile radius. The Post Office, corner shop, newsagents and off-licence are considered the most important to have close by. While a third of people are actively putting savings aside for their forever home, a third already reside in theirs. The age at which we believe we’ll own our forever home emerged as 53, and four out of ten were convinced they would, at some point, purchase their dream pad.
Eighty-four per cent of UK adults are happy with their current home and around eight in ten think it’s likely they will try to improve or renovate the house they own now. THE IDEAL FOREVER HOME AMONG BRITS: •Is worth £458,000. •Is 10.5 miles from work and has transport links. •Has four friendly neighbours - who we are on first name terms with. Has the following rooms: •Playroom x1 •Reception rooms x 2 •En-suites x 2 •Bathrooms x 2 •Bedrooms x 4 And has the following features: •Front AND back gardens •Driveway •Off street parking •Patio •Double garage •Flowerbeds •Summer house •Somewhere to hang the washing out •Gates at the front •Veg patch •Open fields •Garden 1000sqft •View of sea view, rolling hills or field of cows Is this far away from local amenities: •Post office - 1 mile away •Doctors - 1 mile away •Dentist - 2 miles away •Corner shop - 1 mile away •Supermarket - 2 miles away •Leisure centre - 3 miles away •Newsagent off licence - 1 mile away •Petrol station - 2 miles away •Park - 2 miles away •Playground - 2 miles away •Farm shop - 2 miles away •Pub – 1.5 miles away •School - 2 miles away •Clothes shop - 3 miles away •Library – 2.5 miles away •Cinema - 3 miles away •Restaurant - 2 miles away •Chemist 1.5 •Vet – 2.5 miles away And these are the most desired views: •Sea view - 54 per cent •Garden - 38 per cent •Mountains - 44 per cent •Field of cows - 21 per cent To find out more, visit www.origin-global. com/forever-home

Make the most of the remaining Summer I quite like the idea of the current trend in revamping of jeans, which I mentioned in the July edition and I will continue on that theme this month.
Now as we try to make the most of the remaining summer, should you decide to go to the beach or to an outdoor festival, what would you be thinking of wearing? What if you decide that you had enough of splashing out on new clothes and just want to revamp what you already have in your wardrobe?
with the shorts roll up the sleeves and tie the hems at the front.
For a starter - why not customise your past Autumn outfits? And here are some tips to get you started: 1.Take a pair of your old navy blue jeans 2. Get a pair of dressmaking scissors to cut heavy weight fabric. Cut them to make shorts.
3. Stitch an appliqué of an ice cream or any summer image on the shorts near the pocket. 4. Get some navy blue and black chiffon, cut them into diagonals. Place them and stitch them to the hem of the shorts. 5. Get your Autumn print shirt. Style it up
It’s a fact that between 30% and 75% of adults suffer from some level of fear at the thought of visiting the dentist. Some sufferers of dental phobias and needle phobias will put off going to the dentist for years. The main cause is anxiety – anxiety tells you to avoid what you fear, because what you fear seems threatening. But if you have anxiety because of dental phobia, then avoiding the problem does not benefit you and the problem doesn’t go away. In fact, putting treatment off means that eventually you’ll need more extensive (and expensive!) dental treatment. Sometimes you put off preventative treatment for so long you end up with damage that can’t be repaired, and get severe pain, or find you can’t eat properly – maybe you even end up even losing teeth. The cheapest and best dental treatment is preventative, stopping problems before they start, but even if you have got beyond the preventative stage and your teeth are in a poor condition it’s still not too late because Hypnotherapy can help you overcome your fears and carry on with essential treatment. Don’t worry about your dentist being judgmental, or angry with you – he or she is there to help you and will certainly have seen similar problems before and they will certainly be used to seeing other patients
who suffer from dental phobias. Hypnotherapy and other treatments we offer such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can help you to change your mind-set and face the dentist – or blood tests or injections. Our methods will teach you to relax at will and it’s impossible to be relaxed and anxious at the same time. Your dental or needle phobia is simply an association between dentists or needles and feelings of fear and panic.
In just a few sessions of Hypnotherapy you can replace this association with feelings of calmness and being in control. You will be taught to completely relax whilst visualizing yourself at the dentist, doctors’ or hospital. It doesn’t matter where the fear started – you have the problem now so let’s deal with it together. For more details or to make an appointment phone: 01623 556234 Clem Turner Hypnotherapy Practice,

Charity race fun
STAFF at Mansfield opticians Pinders have raised £1,584.50 for APTCOO (A Place To Call Our Own), the charity it is supporting this year. They took part in a 5k inflatable obstacle run at Colwick Racecourse, Nottingham, and collected money at a tombola at Warsop Carnival. Staff at the Queen Street practice in Mansfield decided to join the obstacle race after looking for an interesting way to raise money for the Mansfield-based charity. Optometrist Hannah Shooter, a triathlon champion, offered coaching sessions for the staff, who had an average age of 47, a dislike of heights and no athletic ability.
“Our 20 finalists, who cover a variety of sectors across the country, are all leading examples of success and we firmly believe they truly showcase the Best of Britain.”
Six members of staff — Joanne, Martine, Jackie, Allyson, Jo and Derra — were joined by family and friends for a team of 12 for the race, with finishing times ranging from 27 to 90 minutes.
Love Energy Savings was recognised for its leading work in the industry, winning this year’s Super Consultancy of the Year category in The Energy Live Consultancy Awards (TELCAs).
A spokesman said: “We thank our families, work colleagues, friends and patients who sponsored and supported us, helping to raise a fantastic £1,267.”

Patients at heart of hospital’s new and improved facilities Patients at BMI The Park Hospital, in Nottingham, are benefiting from further investment in new, improved facilities that have opened at the hospital. Patients were invited to view the new facilities at an informal opening.
The improvements at the hospital include a new eight-bedded day case unit, new consulting rooms and a refurbished hospital entrance area. Work is also about to start on a refurbishment of one of the wards. The improvements follow the opening in December 2016 of a brand new cath lab for heart patients. Already, thanks to these new cardiac facilities, the hospital has expanded the number of specialist doctors and has increased the number of clinics for cardiac patients. The opening of the new day case facilities further enhance the services that the hospital provides to some 50,000 patients across Nottingham each year. John Lindars, the hospital’s executive director, explained: “These new facilities represent a multi-million pound investment in the hospital by our parent company BMI Healthcare, and have been designed with our patients in mind. “Thanks to our new day case unit, we are now able to provide some procedures for patients which would have otherwise required them to stay overnight. “Now, people coming in needing – for example – impacted teeth removals, hernia repairs, cataract operations and wrist carpel tunnel operations can be in
and out in the same day.” The hospital is about to embark on refurbishment of the 24 en-suite bedrooms on Rufford Ward. The works will install modern fixtures including flat screen TVs, LED lighting, air conditioning units in every room and upgrading the ensuite bathrooms to wet rooms. Added to this, BMI Healthcare is investing in fast wifi internet access for all its hospitals, so that patients and
visitors can connect to the internet. Mr Lindars added: “Patients, whether they choose us for their NHS-funded care, are covered by health insurance or who decide to pay for their own care, expect to come to a modern facility which has good connectivity, good standards of care and individual attention for their needs. Our improvements are all designed with this in mind, and the feedback from patients so far has been really great.”
Feeling stressed and anxious? So the children are back safely in school and although you could feel a bit guilty about it you might actually be relieved.
One thing about having children is that life is never the same... although you wouldn’t be without them, you miss that ‘me’ time that seems readily available when there are no children around. But just stop and think for a minute... how many other people feel the same. Time demand by other people is one of the biggest causes of stress and anxiety. As well as your busy day-to-day activities, you might be caring for elderly parents or be a grandparent looking after grandchildren. We all have busy lives, rushing round doing things not just for ourselves but for other people. There’s always so much to do – I call it ‘information overload’. Your time is

The need for speed and instant gratification means we are attracted to modern products such as drive-in car washes, drive through restaurants and ready meals. For many people, this emphasis on instant service is a winning formula, particularly for younger people and young families.
Annie says, “We are not about fast food, we are in it for the experience... so enjoy your surroundings, enjoy your time in the historical Lace Market, and its beautiful architecture which, funnily enough, reminds me of home”
However, research indicates that modern consumers are seeking experiences that are more individualised and authentic.
Today’s food companies are continually researching the latest consumer trends, behaviors and eating experiences.
In Tradition We Trust - Today’s consumers seek comfort from modernized versions of age-old recipes, flavours and formats.
To stay ahead and come up with new ideas, they must STOP and take time to THINK. After all, “The electric light did not come from the continuous improvement of the candle”.
We see this in the growing trend for street food. Where once the food from a ‘kiosk’ may have been a greasy burger or a hot dog, we now enjoy Gourmet Burgers, Burritos, Tacos, Buttermilk chicken, Loaded Mac N Cheese and so much more!
So how do large food companies such as McDonalds stay ahead of the trends and ever changing customer? They innovate!
So how do they do this? •They define the challenge and the desired outcome. •They look at what the competition is doing. •They gather provocative and interesting stimulus as inspiration. •The big, believable ideas are refined into workable concepts and tested with the consumer. •Only the strongest ideas then make it to market. Who Knew that so much effort goes into new food products on our retail shelves’ and restaurant menu’s? The next time you try something new, consider where the idea came from. According to The Food People; a food consultancy offering food and beverage trendspotting” Street food is now consumed by an estimated 2.5bn people worldwide, each day”. Street Food markets are popping up all over the UK in London, Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. The Humble Burger So how might you connect hot food trends, flavour’s and dining concepts to the humble burger? ANNIE’S Burger Shack in Nottingham is a
Are fish and chips bad for you? Fish and chips first appeared in the 1860s. Around 1910 there was said to be more than 25,000 fish and chip shops across the UK, and by the 1930s this was over 35,000. Battered fish is first coated in flour then dipped into a batter consisting of flour mixed with liquid, usually water but sometimes beer. Some newer modifications to the recipe may have cornflour added, and instead of beer sometimes soda water is added. It wasn’t until 2003 that British fish and chip shops had to stop serving the food in a wrapping of old newspapers, so with plain paper, cardboard, or plastic being used instead. Also in the same year, the Fish & Chip shop had to name the type of fish it
was serving, so no longer did we see Fish & Chips with a price it had to be Cod & Haddock. Other fried products include scraps but in Southern England these are known as ‘bits’ and ‘scrumps’ in South Wales. During World War II, fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing. Prime Minister at that time Winston Churchill would often refer the combination of fish and chips as "the good companions". Annual spend on fish and chips in the UK is in the region of a staggering £1.2 billion, so that means that British consumers eat some 382 million portions of fish and chips every year. That’s six servings for every
man, woman and child. There are currently approximately 10,500 specialist fish and chip shops in the UK. When people say that Fish & Chips are bad for you just remember these few facts. One portion of chips contains less fat than a prawn mayonnaise sandwich, you can get a third of your daily vitamin C from a portion of chips, Thick fish and chip shop chips absorb less oil than thin chips, which means that chunky chips are actually healthier and They have a third fewer calories than other popular takeaways. They have been a firm British favourite for over 150 years, will this continue over the next 150 years or will a Beef Madras or will a Chicken Chow Mein take over?

Meet the squad who will be striving to bring success to Rainworth MWFC With the new season now under way new manager Craig Denton will be learning much from seeing his Rainworth MW squad in competitive action. Unfortunately the Wrens are already out of the FA Cup, having lost 1-0 at home to Shepshed Dynamo on the first day of the new season. But Denton hopes to put that setback behind him as he looks to improve on last season’s performance. So let’s meet the players who will be doing the job on the field for the Wrens: PLAYERS RETAINED FROM LAST SEASON Tomas Poole (Midfielder): Tomas was signed from Clay Cross Town and since his debut last September has been an instant success. Ben Townsend (Goalkeeper): Ben signed in February 2016 having played for Barnsley and Rotherham United as a junior before playing for Vision Pro Sports Institute, Staveley MW, Ilkeston and Worksop Town. Jordan Claxton (Defender): Three seasons ago Jordan was promoted from the reserves to Rainworth’s then Evo-Stik League side becoming a regular. Unfortunately his work commitments meant he was unable to play on Saturdays and he moved on. He had hoped to return last season but once again work commitments made it impossible to commit and he made only a couple of appearances. This season he has changed jobs and it is hoped he can get back to his previous high levels. Rob Ludlam (Defender): A combative defender signed from Sheffield FC. Liam played for Rotherham Reserves more than 30 times before joining Alfreton Town and going onto Stocksbridge PS and Clipstone FC. He joined from Sheffield FC in July. Jack Waddle (Midfielder): The 23-year-old left-sided midfielder, son of former England star Chris, has already been described as a big loss for Worksop Town, where last season he not only skippered the side but also won the Players' Player and Supporters' Player of the Year awards. Danny State (Striker); Danny is a young striker who has dual registration with EvoStik side Stocksbridge Park Steels. Sam Bebbington (Striker): Sam was a prolific goalscorer for Dronfield Town before moving to Athersley Rec. He has already shown in pre-season that he is also an excellent link-up player, creating many assists. He signed in July. Lee Betts (Defender): Lee played for Gainsborough Trinity U21’s before moving to Parkgate and then Retford United last season. He joined in July. Nathan Modest (Striker): Nathan has Football League experience with Sheffield Wednesday & Darlington before moving to the Non-League. He joined in July.
