Woodhead MD steps into chairman role after 39 years at the helm Edwinstowe-based Woodhead Group has announced its managing director of almost 40 years, David Woodhead, will be stepping into the role of Chairman, paving the way for a new management structure. The company said the move was to ensure sustainability and resilience. David will be succeeded by an established leadership team, which has been developing for the past seven years. The family-run construction business announced the move to its employees, laying out its succession plan and vision for the

future of the company. Glenn Slater (business development director) takes up the new role of chief visionary officer, working alongside Teresa Westwood (HR director), who has been appointed managing director. Sherwood Forest Community Church I love being by the sea, and especially by the sea in St Ives in Cornwall where I have just spent a lovely sunny week with my friend. I first holidayed in St Ives with my family in 1976 and we were totally ‘hooked’ we even bought a holiday cottage in nearby Hayle which we had for several years, which we, family members and friends were able to enjoy.

I find it so amazing to stand on the beach and watch the tide coming in, that vast body of water coming higher and higher up the beach. Psalm 93 says “The seas have lifted up, O Lord, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea - the Lord on high is mighty.” God has set a limit on the great oceans so that the earth is not flooded, but there is no

limit on his love and mercy. Time passes and things change in our lives, sometimes bringing us joy and sometimes bringing us sorrow, but as it says in the old hymn “The steadfast love of the Lord never changes, it’s mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning, new every morning, Great is Thy faithfulness Oh Lord, Great is thy faithfulness “ Both my friend and I are widows now but we trust in God’s unfailing love for He has promised that “He will never leave us or forsake us.” Hebrews 13:5 That promise is for every generation and every person who call upon His Name, He hears the softest whisper and he wipes away our tears. Newark and Sherwood's parks flying the flag among the best green spaces in UK Newark Castle Gardens, Sconce and Devon Park, Vicar Water Country Park and Sherwood Heath, Cockglode and Rotary Woods are among a record number of parks and green spaces which have collected a Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy They have all been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as among the very best in the world. Record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces have been awarded either a prestigious Green Flag Award / Green Flag Community Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. Newark and Sherwood District Economic Development Committee chairman Councillor David Lloyd said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive these Green Flag Awards again. We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and

this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining the parks and green spaces to such a high standard.” Sherwood Heath, Cockglode and Rotary Woods is a 23-hectare area of lowland heathland, acid grassland and woodland which is managed as a partnership project between Newark and Sherwood District Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, the Sherwood Forest Trust, the Forestry Commission and the Friends of Sherwood Heath, Cockglode and Rotary Woods. Sconce and Devon Park is a beautiful haven right in the heart of Newark which offers visitors a vast range of habitats to explore and the chance to learn about the history of the Sconce site which dates back to the civil war. Newark Castle and Gardens are attractive, formal gardens bordered by the remaining walls of Newark Castle which was partly destroyed in 1646 at the end of the English Civil War. There are regular brass band performances on Sunday in the bandstand. As well as enjoying the gardens and experiencing the rich history of the site, visitors

can take guided tours of the castle towers, undercroft and dungeons and also find out about the castle’s role in the English Civil War. Vicar Water Country Park, which offers spectacular views across Derbyshire and Lincolnshire, has been mainly formed on the site of former colliery spoil tips which have been transformed into heathland, woodland and grassland. Sherwood Avenue Park is owned by Newark Town Council and managed and maintained in partnership with Newark and Sherwood District Council. Home & Garden Gardening in September 7

Well, my pleas to Mother Nature for some rain in August seemed to be answered with several nice downpours here and there, so this month im going to see if Mother Nature can hook me up with an Aston Martin and my own private island in the Mediterranean.....fingers crossed eh. While Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m waiting, lets have a look at a few gardening jobs for this month. Believe it or not its that time of year again when you need to be thinking about your Spring bulb displays. Daffodils, Crocus, Hyacinths etc can all be planted now to ensure some Springtime magic. As the weather starts to cool down and herbaceous perennials start to fade you can start to divide any larger clumps you may have for utilizing in other parts of the garden. Use a sharp spade or cutting tool to split them, leaving a good portion of healthy root on each piece and water in well upon replanting. If you are growing pumpkins in time for Halloween then you need to try and raise the fruits off of the ground either on a thick layer of straw or even on wood or crates so that they are not sat on wet soil where they can rot. Also remove any superfluous leaves to allow plenty of light to reach the fruits to help them ripen. September is also a perfect time for lawn planting (either by turf or seed) and maintenance tasks to. Aerating and scarifying are two of the most important tasks and

can be carried out without the need for specialist equipment, just a sturdy garden fork and a springtine rake will suffice. Remove thatch with the rake and then use the fork to pierce the surface of the lawn, giving a little wiggle each time, to create air holes throughout as much of the lawn as you can. Apply an Autumn top dressing and fertilizer after maintenance to encourage healthy root growth. If you haven't already, now is a great time to build or buy yourself a compost bin to make use of all the plant waste that will need tidying up over the coming months, even if this is just fallen leaves as leaf mould is a fantastic source of plant goodness and makes an excellent mulch for hungry plants such as Roses. Be sure to burn or throw away any diseased material that you find though, as this can spread throughout your garden if composted. Also, if you don't already have a water butt in your garden then this is a great time to get one installed in order to make use of excess rainwater in your garden. Rainwater is ideal for watering any acid loving plants in the garden such as Camelias as it won't alter your soils P.H. And it is also great for watering houseplants too, particularly orchids and venus fly traps as the mineral content of tap water can be a bit to harsh for them. And most importantly, enjoy your garden whatever you're doing.

Fragrance in the Garden But while plants stimulate our imaginations and visual senses, they can also tantalise our olfactory sense too, with a range of smells from fruity to spicy, sweet and musky, citrus and savoury tones. From the sweetest perfumes to the most aromatic scents, a gardener should plan their garden with a view to how it will stimulate every possible sense. Gardeners have been using fragrances for planting inspiration for a long time. From the sensory garden for the blind planted in London's Peckham Rye park, to window boxes planted with lavender to waft relaxing scents into rooms on cool summer evenings, fragrance can be an incredibly rewarding cue for gardeners. Fragrant Flowers Luckily for gardeners, nature developed a rich variety of fragrances for flowers to attract pollinators, with just as stunning flowers to provide a visual treat, too. The options are extensive. There are many types of fragrant roses, with scents varying from citrus to floral, musky or even fruit-

Gardenias have a heavy scent and can be grown indoors and outside too. Nicotiana have a strong, sweet fragrance that is most pronounced in the evening. Sweet autumn clematis looks stunning climbing around a window or doorway, and can climb up to 25 feet. It covers itself in masses of fragrant starry white flowers with a gorgeous light scent. Dianthus has a spicy smell, and the stunning oriental lily has a powerful hue, and varieties such as the famous 'Star Gazer' perfume huge spaces with their exotic scent. Lily of the valley may appear small but packs a punch in scent and thrives in shady spots. Sweet peas are a gardener's favourite, famed for their gorgeous fragrances. Garden phlox, lilac, flowering crab apple, honeysuckle, jasmine, iris, hyacinth, heliotrope, sweet alyssum, peony, moonflower, and southern magnolia are all also notable for their wonderful fragrances. Other Nose-Pleasers It isn't just flowers that can tickle your olfactory organ. Most varieties of herb have a wonderful smell, just as pleasing as flowers, with less sweet scents. Rosemary, thyme, basil, mint and garlic all

have strong scents that would sit perfectly outside a kitchen window for easy access while cooking. There is also nothing quite so pleasing as to harvest your own herbs to use in cooking. You should also not overlook the vegetable patch. Tomatoes have a wonderful smell when the fruit is ripening. Where to Place Fragrant Plants When planting flowers or herbs with a strong fragrance, it is worth considering where you tend to get breezes in your garden and where you usually sit outside, or have windows or doors open, so you can best appreciate the smells. These recommendations by no means exhaust the possibilities. There is a wealth of trees that also offer wonderful smells from alpine spruces to apple trees, from their blossoms to barks - the possibilities to plant an aromatic garden are endless. Sam’s Workplace: Fairies, Unicorns & Potatoes Well this month has been as busy as ever! If you haven’t been into the shop, well where have you been? Our Fairy Tree looked fabulous …our flying fairies have literally been flying out of the shop, and our caught fairies are looking for new homes...fairy wings, unicorn horns, fairy houses, unicorn poop and fairy fart dust has all been lovingly prepared ready for sale … it has truly been a labour of love for our guys and we are so pleased that it was so well received by everyone. Down at the allotment, we have been holding pampering sessions for our rabbits and guinea pigs -they have had their nails cut, fur groomed and lots of cuddles which they have thoroughly enjoyed. We have done well with our crop of potatoes and onions this year, sadly we lost a lot of plants due to the extreme hot weather … but we’ll try again next year!! ! In the cafe we have been making lollipop cakes,unicorn cakes, cheesecakes and all our usual

favourites, and have been running activities during the school holidays such as decorating unicorn cakes and making toadstools, as well as decorating mushroom biscuits.!

Abbey Medical Group - New phone system to improve patients & carers access The Practice works closely with the Patient Participation Group who are the ‘voice ‘ of the patients . As a result of this working relationship and also listening to the wider patient feedback in respect of the Practice telephony system we have introduced a revised call handling process. I think it is important to note that our list size is just under 12000 patients and we only have 4 inbound telephone lines which are staffed fully at all times . The call volume to the Practice is often phenomenal and contrary to the community belief that the Telephones are not managed well , the Reception staff often handle over 250 calls between 0800 hours and 6.00 p.m daily . Every call can take anything from 2 minutes to 10 minutes to process depending upon the patient needs . I hope my sharing this information now affords wider understanding by the patients as to the reasons why telephoning the Practice can be sometimes challenging. Therefore in order to try and improve the patient experience for all , the new telephony process is as follows ; The initial greeting message will remain and open up with an advisory message that if you have a chest pain or collapse , Please hang up and dial 999 . You will then be prompted to ;

Patients will be advised to ring back if they have telephoned outside of those hours . During the timed hours listed above , the calls will automatically divert to dedicated and staffed extensions within the Practice . To avoid any potential misuse or attempts to usurp the new processes , you will find that the system will automatically end the call if the timed hours are deliberately breached or ignored . The hold music has been changed to ‘Opus number 1 ‘ , a well-known classical piece of music. In respect of ‘pressing 4 ‘ for a same day appointment the patient will hear a message that will inform them as follows , ” Please be aware that this call queue is for urgent or emergency appointments only . The Reception Team member will ask you for some information that will assist our triage assessment process “ . Please expect to be asked questions by the Reception staff in order that a GP can

then make a risk based assessment as to the urgency being presented for clinical assessment .

Please support us with this aspect of the process as it will speed up your wait time for a GP to telephone you back to discuss the issue or illness . Whilst patients are in the telephony queue, the hold music will break every 30 seconds and patients will be reminded on the first break that a lot of our services can be accessed ‘Online’ and you will be encouraged to sign up to the service. Please do sign up for the online services we offer . To do so , please attend the Practice and bring with you proof of identity ( passport / photo drivers licence ) and address. We will then issue you with the details , including a password on how to access the ‘online services ‘. There will be a second break in the music after 60 seconds which will provide advice in respect of “ Pharmacy First “ and the services that are available and offered . Early indications are that the revised call handling process is adding benefit and value to the patient experience . Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Our recent member’s meeting for August was once again held at the Blidworth Welfare Function room and our guest speaker was the return of the ever popular Peter Hammond. His subject on this occasion was about Nottinghamshire’s own Oliver Twist.

Robert Blincoe was born around 1792 and at the early age of just 4 yrs.’, he was an orphan and living in the St. Pancras workhouse in London. In August 1799, at the age of seven, he was sold to indenture as a parish apprentice to work in the Gonalston Cotton Mill, in Lowdham. Robert was initially a scavenger. Both boys and girls worked as scavengers, a very dangerous job that entailed constantly stooping and crawling to pick up loose cotton waste from under the spinning frames whilst the machine was working. Robert was one of the 80 seven-year-old children sent to Lowdham. They travelled in wagons for five days and were promised roast beef, plum pudding and proper schooling. In reality, their food consisted of porridge and black bread. They worked 14 hours a day, six days a week. Overseers beat the children on the slightest provocation and when Robert ran away, a tailor who sometimes worked for the mill recognized him and dragged him back. In 1802, when Lowdham Mill was closed,

the children were sent to Litton Mill in Derbyshire where the treatment was even worse. Robert Blincoe earned his freedom in 1813 at the age of 21 and made his way to Manchester working at several Cotton Mills along the way. Within a few years he had saved enough to become a waste cotton dealer. In 1819, he founded his own cotton-spinning business and married a woman named Martha. Robert Blincoe was one of the lucky ones; he persevered, overcame and ended up making a decent life for himself. Thousands of other children never made it out of the mills, factories and mines. Peter Hammond’s presentation was very well received by the members and guests and he recommended reading “A Memoir of Robert Blincoe” by John Brown. Following the refreshment break we continued by discussing the life of James Prior, the author of the novel “Forest Folk”. It is set in the early 19th century when Luddism and frame breaking was at its height, and takes place in and around Blidworth. The book tells a story of Blidworth and Blidworth folk, using plenty of local dialect and shows a considerable knowledge of local history and local working-class characters. Despite the irony of Prior being a teetotal Methodist, the Forest Folk hotel and public house was built in Blidworth, incorporating a memorial room with a stained glass window in his honour. His early attempts to become a successful author began with a few short stories and plays, and his first success came in 1897 with “Ripple and Flood” a story set along the Trent valley. “Forest Folk”, his most well-known book, written in 1901, was a modest success. “A Walking Gentleman” 1907 and “Fortuna Chance”1910 also had reasonable reviews. These books are all

available in public libraries. James Prior (1851-1922) lived all his life in Nottinghamshire and is buried in Bingham. With the exception D. H. Lawrence, Prior is probably the only local novelist of the 19th and early 20th century, and yet to our knowledge, following the demolition of the Forest Folk building, nothing exists to appreciate his achievements. Tour of Britain cycle race returns The OVO Energy Tour of Britain returns in September 2018 with 8 days of gruelling, ultra-competitive cycling and, once again, passes through North Nottinghamshireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s roads, this time travelling in the opposite direction. Nottinghamshire Stage 7 takes place on Saturday 8th September and at 223 kilometres, this is the longest stage of the whole tour which started 7 punishing days earlier from Carmarthenshire, Wales. Tour Stage 7 starts from West Bridgford, Nottingham and passes through the towns and pretty villages of Nottinghamshire including Keyworth where thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a King of the Mountains climb, Lowdham, Southwell, Tuxford, Eaton, Retford town centre (sprint as the riders enter Retford), Babworth, Ranby, Worksop (sprint), Edwinstowe, Bilsthorpe (sprint), Blidworth, Ravenshead and Hucknall, ending with the race passing through the streets of central Mansfield and very likely with a bunch sprint at the end.

Bilsthorpe Garden Club On Wednesday evening, 18th July, Members enjoyed a visit to Eaton Avenue Growers’ Association, an inspiring project for people with learning difficulties, where we were given an informative tour and lovely refreshments, served by their team of enthusiastic volunteers. Our visit was organised by Pat Jones.

On Wednesday, 15th August, we held our Annual General Meeting & Social Evening at Bilsthorpe Welfare. In his report, Chairman, Dennis Lewin, spoke of a busy year of interesting speakers, social events and suppers, Summer evening visits and two all-day coach-trips, a Plant Sale & Coffee Morning, our Autumn Produce Show and, of course, our Annual Summer Holiday, which, this year, was to North Wales. Three Officers were standing down this year: Sandra Fleet, our long-standing Secretary, Steve Smart, who has been our show Secretary for several years, and Pat Jones, who has organised our summer evening visits so well. Pat and Steve would still continue to serve on the Committee. Member, Alan Ashley gave a vote-of-thanks to all three retiring Officers, in appreciation of their hard work and dedication on

behalf of the Club. All other Officers and Committee Members were prepared to stand again and were re-elected as follows:Chairman – Dennis Lewin, Vice-chairman – Ian Roberts, Treasurer – Jenny Smart, Speakers’ Programme Organiser – Florence Mitchell, Assistant Show Secretary – Connie Roberts, Media Officer – Chris Cooper and Margaret Wright, who assists Holiday Organiser, Alan Ashley, who also volunteered and was elected to the post of Summer Evening Visits Organiser for the year 2019. After the conclusion of formal business, Members enjoyed a generous cold buffet supper, prepared by the Committee. Our next event will be our Annual Produce Show on Sunday, 2nd September in the Village Hall, Cross Street. Doors will be open to the public at 2.15 pm and awards will be presented at 3.0 pm, after which there will be an Auction of Produce, followed by the Raffle Draw. All are welcome. Membership Renewal of £5 per household will be on Wednesday evening, 19th September at 7.30 pm in the Lounge at Bilsthorpe Welfare.

On Wednesday, 1st August, we enjoyed a Group Visit from the National Women’s Register and on Thursday, evening, 9th August, we were pleased to have a Group visit from Worksop Rotary Club. (Continues from page 1) Ross Frazer, RSPB project manager, said he was delighted that so many local workers and resources have been used whenever possible in the project, which is costing more than £5 million. “I’m sure everyone connected to this area will be delighted to see these figures, and we’ll hope to continue in this vein going forwards when we open.” Andy Stamford, Woodhead’s site manager, said a lot of time and effort went into ensuring that so much of the build was resourced locally. “Woodheads is a local family firm, committed to this area, so I think everyone who has been involved in this project has a great deal to be proud of. It’s not just a wonderful looking building but a great asset for this area.” Nottinghamshire County Councillor, John Cottee, Chairman of the Communities and Place Committee, said he was delighted by

the news. “After many years of work trying to establish a new Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, I am thrilled that this has finally come to fruition and is almost ready to open. “Working with our new partners, the RSPB

and their consortium, I believe this facility will help Nottinghamshire to realise the true potential of the Legend of Robin Hood, in terms of increasing tourism and promoting the County on an international stage.”

Getting ready to rock for Heroes A new live music show, Rock For Heroes, will combine the music of favourite rock and pop stars with fundraising.

A collection for Help For Heroes is made at the end of each show, including the one at the Palace Theatre, Mansfield, on 21st September.

Reach Mansfield gearing up for the Mansfield 10k Local charity Reach Learning Disability is once again gearing up for the annual Mansfield10k on Sunday, 16th September The charity, which has its Reach Mansfield base at the St John’s Centre, supports adults with learning disabilities from the town and surrounding areas. Clients, staff and volunteers from across Reach’s four centres will be out in force to support the event this year including two Reach Mansfield staff who are swapping roles. Last year, Reach Mansfield Project Coordinator Maria Williams ran with her father. This year she will be showing her support again by marshalling at the event. Maria said: “I ran for Reach last year as

A visit to the V&A – Fashion and Nature On Friday the 8th of August I ventured out to London to visit the V&A and to see the Fashion and Nature Exhibition. With my interest in Eco-friendly fabrics and designs, this Exhibition was a must visit for me. The exhibition gives us the history of clothes, the animals they came from such as Birds for its feathers for the adorned ladies hats, sheeps for the wool for the tailored jackets, whales for the boning for ladies corsetry underneath the dresses etc. The exhibition also showed modern clothing using recycled resources. Following is a dress made from plastics by recycling it to make a polyester dress, beautiful isn’t it! Sustainable fashion is now moving forward as public trend is to buy less clothes and buy those that last longer and which can be recycled and the manufacturing does not involve harmful chemicals. Taste of restaurant business from ‘rising star’ chefs Trainee chefs from West Nottinghamshire College got a taste of what it takes to create award-winning food and run a professional kitchen – from three former students who are rapidly making a name for themselves in the world of gastronomy. It came courtesy of an end-of-year trip by catering and hospitality students to renowned restaurant The Black Bull Blidworth, Blidworth, last week (Tuesday 19 June) to sample dishes cooked by joint head chefs Lewis Kuciers and Craig Hadden and chef de partie Rees Whelpton. The talented trio put together a special three-course menu for the entry-level and level one students and staff before taking part in a question and answer session, which saw them reveal the ideas behind their culinary creations and what inspired them to become chefs, along with their tips for career success. Dishes on the menu included a starter of baked John Dory with seaweed vinegar gel, puffed pork skin and grated horseradish, black pudding purée and parsley sauce split with parsley oil. This was followed by a main course of chicken and mushroom suet pudding, confit chicken wing, crisp chicken skin, mushroom sauce, asparagus, and chips. It was rounded off with a dessert of sheep yoghurt mousse, Starkey’s strawberries, strawberry and lovage granita, lovage meringue, and strawberry gel. Inventive dishes such these have earned The Black Bull two coveted AA Rosettes for culinary excellence – one of just two pubs in Nottinghamshire to hold the double honour – along with the title of ‘best out of town establishment’ at the 2017 Nottinghamshire Food and Drink Awards. Meanwhile, Lewis, 21, was named best young chef at this year’s Nottinghamshire Food and Drink Awards, held at the De Vere East Midlands Conference Centre on Thursday 14 June, after triumphing over five fellow competitors in a MasterChef-style cooking competition hosted by the college in May, judged by celebrated two-Michelin star chef Sat Bains. It was the latest individual accolade for Lewis, who was one of just seven Craft

Guild of Chefs graduate award winners from across the UK last year, joining its coveted Hall of Fame. Level 1 Diploma in Hospitality and Catering student Patrick Murray, 17, said: “Seeing and tasting their food has given me a better insight into how to balance-out dishes in terms of flavour and texture. Hearing from these guys has given me a goal to aim for.” Ruth Ajayi, also 17, who studied on the same course, said: “It was interesting to learn what they went through to become successful chefs and the gratitude they still have for the college. It makes me appreciate the tutors we have; if they can do this for other students, they can do it for us too.” Lewis and Craig graduated from the college in 2015 with the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Professional Cookery, with Rees graduating the following year with the same qualification. Chef tutor Mark Jones, who continues to mentor The Black Bull chefs, said: “The idea was to show current students what they can aspire towards after completing their course. Hopefully they can take some inspiration to move forwards and progress through the levels, like Craig, Lewis and Rees did, and maybe they will have similar opportunities in the future, with the right skills behind them.

“The industry is crying out for high-calibre chefs and these are exactly what we’re trying to produce.” Speaking about Lewis’s latest accolade, Mark said: “I was very proud to learn Lewis has been crowned Nottinghamshire’s best young chef, although I wasn’t at all surprised his talent has been recognised in this way. He thoroughly deserves it. “Having taught and mentored Lewis from the start, his continuous drive, passion and dedication to his craft is fantastic. I know he and his colleagues are constantly evolving as chefs and it’s wonderful to see.”

Lewis said: “We wouldn’t be where we are now if it wasn’t for the college, so it’s good to give something back. By talking to students about our routes into professional cookery and aspects such as choosing the right produce and correct pricing, we’ve hopefully broadened their knowledge.” Craig, 22, added: “To succeed in this business, you need the right attitude and aptitude, and a passion for what you do – that was my main message to them. If they take just a little bit of what we’ve said and carry it forward, that’s brilliant.”

Mixed fortunes for Birchalls at Assen

Mitchells of Mansfield-backed Birchall Racing claimed another podium result, this time at round five of the 2018 FIM Sidecar World Championship held at Assen in the Netherlands. Although fastest all weekend, the brothers were forced to settle for third following a small technical issue in Sunday’s Gold Race. The sun shone down on Assen for round five of the FIM Sidecar World Championship. Starting early on Saturday morning, Birchall Racing went out on track and after bedding themselves and their machine in immediately began to set the pace. At the end of the first qualifying session they were the only team to break the one minute 45 second barrier. Qualifying two also went the way of the Mansfield-based family team and, enjoying a trouble-free session, the brothers posted a time of 1:44.099 – over a second faster than their nearest rivals. Finding even more pace on Sunday’s morning warm-up, the Birchalls went into the Gold Race feeling confident of a top result.

Firing off the line and grabbing the holeshot, the boys took the early lead and immediately pulled a second over the following pack. With their LCR Yamaha outfit handling perfectly on the famous Assen circuit Ben and Tom looked set to claim another world championship win.

“We’ll go back now and start preparing the bike for Croatia and hopefully we’ll be able to carry the speed we had from Assen into the last two rounds of the championship and come away with maximum points.” Tom Birchall added: “Obviously it’s so disappointing not to have come away with a win, especially after showing such dominating pace over the course of the event.

Swapping positions with Reeves for the next five laps, the technical issue began to worsen – Ben was unable to maintain the pace needed to fight for the win and was regrettably forced to back-off, ultimately crossing the line in third, salvaging valuable championship points. Although the team have thankfully diagnosed the issue as a simple faulty throttle position sensor, they were disappointed not to have converted their superior pace over the weekend into a race win. Ben Birchall said: “I am gutted we couldn’t take victory at Assen. Third place is still a great result but after all the hard work the team have put in preparing the machine over the last couple of months it’s disappointing not to reward them with a win. “We did everything right all weekend and had a good advantage over the rest of the field. Unfortunately, despite fixing one issue that has bugged us all season, another

Young players give cause for optimism Rainworth MW’s debut season in the East Midlands Counties League is now under way, and at the time of the publishing deadline they are still seeking their first league victory after three matches. But they did chalk up a great victory over Dunkirk in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup. Pre-season preparations ended with a 3-0 defeat for a very depleted side at big spending United Counties League Harrowby United at Grantham, followed by a 4-2 triumph at Awsworth Villa of the Nottinghamshire Senior League. Manager Ben Marvin and his assistant Paul Rockley have assembled what is primarily a very young side with a handful of senior players to add a bit of experience. But, while these youngsters have been a joy to watch and have shown good cause for optimism for the season, their first three league games have yielded one point from a 1-1 draw at Kimberley, both goals coming from the penalty spot with Rainworth’s scored by Blessing Adaleye. The season began with a home fixture against Heanor Town who, like the Wrens, took a voluntary drop from a higher division, in their case the Midland League, for financial reasons. Having been reduced to 10 men in the 38th minute, the Wrens held out until virtually the last kick of the first half when the Lions of Heanor grabbed a lead which they doubled thanks to an unlucky own goal midway through the second half. That 38th minute bogey struck again in the second match at Kimberley when keeper Warren Squires was very harshly dismissed, Kimberley going in front from the resulting penalty with skipper Jacob Lowe having donned the jersey. But a spirited second half display by the Wrens brought an early equaliser and, on balance of play, they might well have won it. They didn’t have long to wait for that first win though – but it wasn’t for league

points. Dunkirk, who were promoted as champions last season from the EMCL into the Midland League, provided the opposition, and indeed they did take the lead, but a tremendous strike by 18-year-old James Jepson restored parity before Blessing Adaleye sealed Rainworth’s first FA Cup win for eight years. They could not have asked for a tougher draw for the next round than Evo-Stik League newcomers AFC Mansfield, who had defeated Leicestershire outfit Kirby Muxloe 6-1 in the previous round, and by the time this is in print the result of that local derby will be known. But back to league action and a lack lustre first half performance at Ashby Ivanhoe saw the Wrens trail 2-0 at the break. A much better second half show followed but there were no more goals and that was how it ended. Remaining August fixtures were the cup tie at AFC Mansfield on 25th and Clipstone at home on Bank Holiday Monday. September 1st sees the start of the FA Vase campaign and it’s a third local derby

in a row with Teversal visiting the Tomlin Personnel Stadium, and the derbies keep on coming with Sherwood Colliery also due at Rainworth on 8th. Should FA Vase progress have been made, 15th will see a trip to the winners of the Clifton All Whites v Belper United tie, before the Wrens set off on their travels for two Tuesday night games, to Barrow Town on 18th and Newark Flowserve on 25th, before wrapping up the month at home to Eastwood on Saturday 29th.
