Welcome to the March/April issue of The Vintage Scene.

nd, here we are in March… The Snowdrops and Daffodils are in full bloom, and we have even had a day or two of sunshine - as well as a fair amount of wind and rain! Doesn’t it make you feel good though? This, and a jam packed diary of events for the next couple of months. There hasn’t been much movement on the restoration of ‘Alice’ (my Dad’s old Allis Chalmers B); although I ran out of space again to include the first instalment of work done thus far, so I will have to postpone my ‘nagging’ until nearer the deadline of the next issue! Lately, I keep adding more jobs to the list for my ‘other’ half, Robin to attend to. The latest is a bit of a dream… Nigh on thirty years ago, I purchased a small parcel of land to house my horses. Horses being somewhat selective eaters, leave a fair amount of weeds. Every year, Dad would come along on his Ferguson 35x and top the land. This, in fact, is portrayed on the Cover Picture of the very first issue of The Vintage Scene. When I look at this little Ferguson, I see ‘my Dad’; it has huge sentimental value. You can imagine my joy therefore when my Mum recently gifted it to me. It has sat untouched for a fair few years, and so Robin is braced ready for

the nagging to commence! My aim is to get it running, along with Dad’s ‘topper’ and use them on the field before the summer is out. My brother, Charlie, was also very touched when Mum gifted him Dad’s little Grey Diesel Fergie, the one which he drove to take Dad on his final journey.

On the ploughing front; Charlie won the Horticultural class at Stratford on 6th February, but has not been to any matches since. The weather put paid to the recent local matches unfortunately. Back to this issue, we have some ploughing reports courtesy of Kenny Wharton, and Willy Carson takes us back in time through old articles and adverts. We meet ‘Lord Malvern’, an Aveling & Porter F type roller. Mike Thorne tells us about his Morris 1000 pick-up, John Selley provides us with an update on the Ferguson 35 which went out to Tanzania, and young Rebecca Carson has success striking a deal to purchase a Bentall hammer mill. So, there is lots to read. We have a constant stream now of content coming in, but we are greedy and would love more! So, whether it’s an event, a project or a story we would love you to send it in. A Dream that Came True!

by Mike Thorne, a member of The Ferguson Club

A

bout 30 years ago, I dreamt that I had bought and restored a Morris 1000 pick-up and painted it in my firm’s colour of BMC Lime Flower Green.

I should explain that a few months after my 21st birthday, in 1959, I bought a brand new Morris 1000 Pick-up, XXM 572, from Henley’s of North London for the sum of £370-0-0 plus £7-10-0 for the passenger sea. It was pretty basic, no heater and no form of directional indication. The day I drove it home, my father left the family! This little Morris served me well, clocking up 187,000 miles before it was scrapped. To achieve this, it required 3 Gold Seal engine and gearboxes. (Gold Seal was BMC’s trade name for it’s rebuilt power and transmission units) During the course of it’s life, the chassis had to be replaced; the commercial Morris 1000, unlike the passenger models, had a separate chassis. On waking, I felt, well that is a good idea. So, that is exactly what I proceeded to do! I soon found that there was a sad looking 1968 Morris 1000 Pick-up in a barn at

the nearby village of Winkleigh. I approached the owner, who had used it in connection with his forestry work, and he seemed very keen that I should buy it for renovation. I cannot remember how much I paid for it – if anything! Anyway, my long-standing friend, Robin Haughton, and I soon had it back home at my workshop at Lower Park, home of my Coldridge Collection and work commenced. We took off all the mechanical units, this was followed by removing the doors and body panels, leaving just the chassis. As Robin and I picked up either end, with the intention of putting it into the scrap metal skip, it folded in half! The next stage of this project was to make a preliminary list of replacement parts required. At this time, there was a firm by the name of Hendrix of Nottingham who specialised in Morris 1000 parts and they were able to supply a replacement chassis, fabricated using thicker steel than the original! They were also able to supply a pair of front wings, repair parts for the door bottoms, inner rear wheel arches but sadly not the outer repair kit. Fortunately, Robin’s skills overcame this problem! The

engine rebuild was entrusted to Chris of Kar Engine Services of Barnstable, a most competent machine shop man whose speciality at the time was service exchange cylinder heads, all complete, suitable to run on unleaded petrol. The gearbox was rebuilt by the late Gordon Rogers, the proprietor of Mid Devon Motors in Winkleigh, using all genuine BMC parts. The rear axle just required replacement bearings, as did the propshaft. The rear shock absorb had to be replaced but the front ones were still serviceable. All parts were ordered, and paid for, from Hendrix, and Robin and I drove my Peugeot 504 to pick them up. To start off with we gave the chassis two coats of heavy duty black paint, and then a good dose of Waxoyl. Then it was a gradual process of building up the suspension and installing the braking system and the engine, gearbox, propshaft etc etc.. All the body panels were repaired by Robin, and then taken to Peter Clarke of Lapford for priming and painting with two pack BMC Lime Flower Green. Peter, of course did a first class job. They were very carefully brought back to Lower Park and we started bolting it all together. A new windscreen was fitted by Autoglass and I was able to persuade their fitter to install the rear window as well! After Peter had painted the four wheels, which are slightly wider than the car’s, new radial ply tyres were fitted, so we were now getting on well. Next we had to install a new wiring loom, new control box and new lights all round. At this point, I did take the opportunity to fit hazard warning lights, a rear fog light and reversing light,

tow bar and socket. I did not bother to have the seats or door cards retrimmed until it had had it’s MOT done, which it passed without a hitch. Then the vehicle was taken to Exeter Motor Trimmers to have the seats and door cards recovered, and they also made a very nice cover for the load space. The final work was to have the signwriting which was done by Ken Back, also of Exeter. He did this in the traditional way, by hand, with a brush. The type face I used on my vehicles was Consort Light, the letters have a slightly exaggerated serifs, some of which Ken chose to join together. It looks the ‘cat’s whiskers’! Back in the Autumn of 2020, I had our local body shop tidy up the rust patches which they did without any ‘damage’ to Ken’s beautiful signwriting! Since being put back on the road, it has clocked up a further 25,000 miles of mainly dry weather driving. It is a very nice balanced vehicle to drive and it so often gives bystanders a smile, as well as always giving me a good feeling! Mike Thorne. Footnote: Mike has a wonderful collection of Tractors and Implements at Coldridge Nr. Exeter which you can visit by appointment only. Mike does not make a charge but does ask for a donation of at least £5 for the local hospice, which he has been supporting for many years. His phone number is 07966 328600. A tip, from experience, take your sandwiches and a thermos!

An update from Tanzania! supplied by John Selley of The Ferguson Club Hi John, I trust all is well with you. I just wanted to update you all on the tractor news from Tanzania and you all contributed to make this happen. Just wanted to show you the wonderful new paint job on Punda the tractor. My team here and a couple of young English guys who are volunteering for a couple of months have been busy with the paint brushes. She is certainly putting in the hours right now as we have some tasks in the village to perform. Carting water and doing some ploughing. Also carting sand for building. So there is plenty of work around. Our local mechanic has found a very reliable supplier of any parts we may need and he is learning his way around her very quickly. I just can’t get the smile off my face as the value she is adding to the conservancy and community. Some more exciting news to come in due course. Best wishes.

What the Papers Said by Willy Carson

O

n the following few pages you might expect to find the story of some fellow vintage enthusiasts and their efforts to restore, rebuild, collect or demonstrate interesting items from our past. That’s exactly what I expected…but! I made an appointment to visit a man in a shed, find out about the engineering gems within, take some photographs and then write all about my trip. Then the fellow rings to tell me that he has to self-isolate. We rearranged the visit for a later date but then Rebecca came home from school with ‘you know what’ and had to self-isolate. Someone had to stand guard at the wardrobe door so another appointment had to be scrapped. When it looked like it was safe to go outside again, the weather man reached for his A to Z of storms and we were back to square one. I decided that this might be a good excuse to delve into my stack of boxes containing old magazines, journals and reports spanning back over a hundred years, so I made a mug of tea and sat down to read. I have a dozen Royal Agricultural Society of England journals published in the years following WW2 which would hopefully describe how the country returned to a new normal after six years of conflict had disrupted both urban and rural life. In 1947, under the guidance of Lt.Col. Sir Archibald G. Weigall Bt., K.C.M.G., the Royal Show returned to take its place on the farming calendar. Having prepared the site with few materials available due to post-war shortages, and having worked through the worst winter in a generation, the RASE welcomed, to the Lincolnshire site, 240,323 members of the public (a record number at the time) who were eager to see what the future held for British agriculture. Commenting on the livestock entries, the Show Supplement noted of the Dairy Shorthorn breed that, “It was gratifying to see proved stalwarts winning prizes….In the pedigree world the many owe much to the few....it is not exaggerating to say that each breed depends for its improvement almost entirely upon a small band of enthusiastic leaders.” I suppose if you’re happy to adapt a famous quotation to make your point, you could do worse than start with the famous words of Winston Churchill himself. In the milking trials held during the show, based on three milkings during a 24 hour period, the popular Dairy Shorthorn produced 59lb 6oz, the Ayrshire gave 65lb 9oz and the emerging breed, the British Friesian poured an impressive 77lb 2oz into the bucket. This spelled out the future of dairying in black and white. RASE Journal vol. 110 of 1949 began with a summary of farming in Oxfordshire. Of North Oxfordshire, it was noted that, “The Banbury area is one of very mixed farming, with a preponderance of small farms and no very large ones….The smaller farms rely mainly on milk production and a progressive 100 acre dairy farmer in this area might be milking about 20 cows and carrying their followers….have about 30 acres of old grass, 30 acres of leys, 20 acres of oats, 5 acres [of] roots and green crops, 5 acres of potatoes and 10 acres of wheat.” With cows to 8

March/April 2022

milk and all these different crops to plant and harvest, farmer Brown of Bottom Farm would own one tractor and a range of implements to make life easier for himself and his two farmhands. In the 1951 edition of the journal, there was an analysis of the previous year’s Machinery Census concentrating on the size and distribution of tractors throughout England and Wales. “There are substantially more tractors on farms of under 50 acres to-day than there were in the whole country when the first Census was taken in 1927. Even so, more than 23,000 farms of over 50 acres still had no tractor at all. Only about 1 percent of all tractors in the country were owned by whole-time contractors.” Advertisements appearing in the pages of the journal show how the tractor manufacturers were making great advances in design and production as their factories reverted from producing wartime material to the machines that were needed to feed the nation and help balance the chancellor’s books. “Export or Die,” was the new rallying call. As a result of this policy, an innovative vehicle appeared to fill a short-term production hiatus at a former aircraft factory in Solihull. Due to steel shortages, allocation preference was given to firms which could secure foreign currency by exports, and Maurice Wilks had come up with a design which fitted into the new manufacturing order of things. His design

would solve transport problems in parts of the world where poor roads made travel difficult and, by using war-surplus aircraft grade Birmabright in place of steel, he didn’t have to worry about materials supply. His brilliant idea was, of course, the Land-Rover. In the issue of Commercial Motor, dated 30th April 1948, this revolution in vehicle design was described as combining, “the functions of a light van or a car and trailer, with those of a light tractor, thus providing a single vehicle which will meet the majority of needs of the small farmer.” Overseen by the technical editor, extensive tests were carried out the following year with the following conclusions, “A fuel consumption trial was made when the machine was attached to a Ransomes No. 3 Motrac two-furrow plough….set to a depth of 7in….At the end of the hour’s fuel test, 6.3 pints were required to replenish the tank to the original level. A medium-weight wheeled tractor uses 6 pints of fuel per hour when engaged in the same class of work. We estimated that half an acre had been ploughed during the hour.” Appearing on the newsstand shelves the same week, The Motor was equally enthusiastic about this new wonder, “In launching this new vehicle the Rover Co. has displayed an enterprise which should be well rewarded, and there is no doubt that a big market exists for a machine such as the LandRover. There is no doubt, also, that in its design the Rover Co. has applied a wide knowledge and experience not only of vehicle manufacture, but of agricultural and industrial requirements.” As a ‘short term’ manufacturing venture the Land-Rover seemed to have done the trick and was to continue to do the trick for the next 70 years!

Fordson improved Manifold by Carl Hargreaves

I

am writing this article to give you an insight as to how much time and work is involved in “Putting the newness back” into these old tractors.

A retired engineering chum of mine (Plumb), goes mad when people say “Can you just” … He says, they just don’t realise the time/effort/head scratching involved. Anyway, this manifold is for one of our E27N’s which is patiently waiting its turn for restoration. Here is my dad (Jimmy) happy in his work, grinding valves in. Then over at the milling machine; I clamped the manifold to the mill as the original machined face of the manifold, which goes against the engine would be the best way to position it, as a starting point.

During the winter months, I tend to do a little more indoors. I recently bought a later style, known as the “Improved Manifold” for the E27N. This came from our good friend and Fordson parts supplier, Ken. The manifold had seen better days; the outlet was broken, along with a few broken and seized bolts. The heat control baffle was stuck solid, which is quite a common problem on these. But remember, they are 70+ years old and the newness has worn off!

I started off by grinding the heads off the bolts on the outlet to gain access to the heat control baffle plate inside. Doing this also left the seized in bolts proud of the surface to make it easier to align the cutter to machine them out. 12

March/April 2022

The seized in bolts were 3/8UNC thread, and the tap/drill size required in modern day terms is 8mm. I used a 2flute cutter, or some folks call them a slot drill it depends where abouts you come from …… I lined up the cutter in both plains, North to South and East to West. This is where having the intended stud, proud of the surface comes in handy. Basically, you need to drill the centre of the bolt/stud out without going outside the edge and, if done so correctly, you should be able to pick out the threads and just run a tap down them to use the original threads.

You can see in this picture; the thread is spiralling out as the cutter bores through it.

Vintage Scene MarchApril 2022_Layout 1 10/03/2022 21:38 Page 13

Don’t get me wrong, it is a lot easier doing this on a milling machine but, with patience the same could be achieved on a decent pillar drill. After machining out the 4 bolts, the next phase was to skim the surface where the outlet bolts on to the manifold. This area was badly pitted. I used a carbide tipped endmill to go over the surface and true it all up. Here are the results

My next task was to try and free up the heat control baffle; these things are commonly seized. I took the cutting torch and gently warmed up the manifold. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on my side that day. So, I decided to cut the rod in 3 and remove the baffle plate that way. I also tried to remove the very rusty bolt in the control arm and that broke.

Now with a freshly machined surface as a reference point, I flipped over the manifold and give the mating surface to the engine block a light skim. The main source of trouble with Fordson manifolds is they need good gaskets and seals so they don’t suck any air to weaken your fuel/air mixture.

I knocked out the old bushes and the amount of rust and corrosion was evident. Even if I had freed them up with the rust out of them, they would have been a very poor fit. With the main casting now machined, I turned my attention to the replacement outlet I had found for this project. They are a strange shape to hold on to the milling machine, so a bit of creative thinking was required. I used a clock gauge, some machinist jacks and a parallel to get the part true and just how I wanted it to be held for machining. Like the old saying “a picture speaks a thousand words”.

Please mention THE VINTAGE SCENE when responding to advertisements

I decided to make my replacement bushes from Phosphor Bronze, so they wouldn’t rust up again. I know what you are thinking, the softer metal and the cast + heat … Phoz. Bronze melts at 977oC and cast iron at 1204oC. If ever a Fordson was to get to them temperatures, I think that would be an achievement in itself on an engine with only splash lubrication. People in the past and still do, braze manifolds to repair them with brass, which has a melting point of 930oC.

Vintage Scene MarchApril 2022_Layout 1 10/03/2022 21:39 Page 14

One morning over the Christmas break, I made a replacement control arm, to replace the one I broke; cut out from an offcut of thick steel.

the manifold and the top hat shape of them means they cannot fall outwards as things warm up. All built up and fitted with a heat control mechanism I made from flat bar, after copying it from another original manifold we have here.

Everything was a good fit and all I had to do was cut the rod to length and thread one end for a nut.

Here is a view of my trial assembly. My new heat control arm is held on with an Allen bolt on the back side which is hidden from view. I have drilled and tapped the baffle flap to take an Allen bolt to secure it to the new rod. The new bronze bushes are shaped like top hats and fitted from the inside, then the baffle plate goes in between them, so they cannot fall in to

14

March/April 2022

I am looking forward to testing this repaired manifold out on the tractor when the weather warms up. Hopefully it will be an “improved-improved Manifold” we shall see...

Lord Malvern joined W.W. Buncombe’s iconic fleet as number 88, serving it's working life as a general purpose road rolling engine. Currently residing at Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire, the roller is under the ownership of Tim

Hayter, and is now ready to run under it’s own steam for the first time in over a decade. Tim's niece, Sophie Hayter and her partner Ben Collard alongside Tim, have dedicated their spare time to make sure Lord Malvern arrives back onto the rally field in top condition, although Sophie tells us there is still plenty of work to be done.

NotTs NVTEC Working Day 6th February 2022 Report & Photos by Kenny Wharton, www.kenpics.com

T

he Notts NVTEC working days are a fantastic opportunity to see a wide variety of machines out in the field, doing what they do best. On this occasion Crawlers were well represented including a huge BTD20.. As well as the usual ones, it was good to see the NATCO 130+ working. It is a ‘one-off’ construction and thankfully doesn’t remain hidden away. The day was organised by the Notts NTVEC committee to allow members to get out and play, as well as raise a bit of money for club funds to finance the working weekend in August.

Ford power leads the way

Thanks must go to the Dunthorpe family for use of the land, and setting out was organised by Nicholas Kitchen and Dan Bartle. The rest of the committee worked hard in various ways to make it all come together and everyone was rewarded by having 37 working tractors and one stationary engine. As seems the norm nowadays, the day ended in rain, providing two rainbows but causing the lorries to need towing from the field!

Thirsk Ploughing Match 13th February 2022 In aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research Photos & Report by Kenny Wharton, www.kenpics.com rganiser Derek Tyson has not had much luck with the weather when arranging recent events. This match was no exception starting out cold and damp, with rain setting in before the end of the match. Despite the rain the ploughmen remained in high spirits and produced excellent work.

Trevor Johnstone was in a class of his own, literally! Being the only competitor in the Vintage Trailed class first place was guaranteed, but in true style he still aimed for the perfect plot. Speaking to Trevor towards the end of the day, he said the rain does not bother him as being

from the West side of the country he is used to it! Joking aside, there could be something in this as Mac Simpson from Garstang also won his class. Land supplied by kind permission of the Milnes-Coates family. With thanks to the Baker boys and Allen Brown for marking out and to the judges, John Hill, David Thomlinson, Ian Thompson, Paul Hudson and Les Hall. Derek Tyson expressed his gratitude to everyone who donated, as the final sum exceeded the target of £1000.

“Not a lot of spanNering done” By Rebecca Carson t’s been a while since I was out because I had Covid 19, and as a result of that there has been not a lot of spannering done.

I

Did I tell you about the water pump I got for my 10th birthday? We got as far as we could with taking it apart, but we couldn’t take the cross shaft out of the piston and we needed to take the piston out to replace the rope seals which were rotten. Daddy’s cousin, Harry, has a hydraulic press in his farm workshop, just what we needed. The big gauge said there was 15 tonne of pressure on the cross shaft but it wasn’t enough to move it, so we took the pump to the bench and heated it up with his gas bottles. Daddy lifted the pump back onto the press and we tried again. There was a huge bang and…the pump body casting broke. It obviously wasn’t supported the same way as the first time. I pressed the cross shaft out of the piston and Daddy said that there was no point in worrying about the broken casting, something would turn up. The following Saturday, another of Daddy’s cousins called to say that he had been clearing out a shed and found a dismantled Lister water pump. Were we interested? This might get Daddy out of jail! We went to see the pump and it was a Lister H3. We’re back in business. Hopefully we won’t make the same mistake again! On a visit to Geoffrey Mark’s shed, he showed us a Bentall hammer mill which he had for sale. It was seized solid, quite battered and the topper needed to be replaced. However, I knew that it would be an interesting project, especially as I could try out my new welding mask. I thought about it for a while and asked Daddy if we could go back to see Geoffrey again. I was really excited the day we went up to see him. I had some money in my purse and spent the journey thinking about how the dealing might go. When we got there I told him that I would need to make new legs for it and wood was expensive and it would need a new hopper. I sucked through my teeth with my hands on my hips and shook my head, just like Daddy told me to, and offered him a bid. Geoffrey told me what he was hoping to get for it so I had to put my bid up a fiver. Geoffrey agreed to take my price. I had gone up by £5, but he had come down a lot more! Before Christmas I had bought a box of old tools, mostly Whitworth stuff. We went to see Sammy Gault, a stationary engine collector, and swapped some of the Whitworth taps for a dinky wee oil can. John Fleming, a Ferguson tractor restorer, rang to say that he had some old cans, including a very nice square Agricastrol can to add to my collection. We called in with him one day and it was interesting to see the MF 35 that he was working on.

Harry lined up the press the first time.

It needed some heat from Harry’s gas bottles.

This was just before it went bang! pump and having another look at the Allen Scythe. The dates for this year’s shows are out so we are hoping to take the engine out in the summer. Until then….

Rebecca.

Hopefully we’ll be back in the barn working on the water 26

The casting was broken but we still had to remove the cross shaft.

The cutest wee oil can you’ll ever see.

The result of my first deal.

It looks like this mill was made in Ireland. We’ll have to look into that.
