within the restored log building. The blacksmith’s shop houses a permanent static display that includes a hand crank forge and blacksmith tools. You can almost hear the anvil ring as a repair was performed on a stagecoach or freighter’s wagon. The creamery is equipped with the containers and equipment that the Walther family would have used to separate and store the milk and its byproducts. The one room schoolhouse is ready for a class to begin. A teacher’s desk, a pot belly stove, a map and a blackboard have restored the building to the way that it may have looked 100 years ago. Be sure to notice how small the students desks look compared to modern models. EXPLORE y t n u o C o k El Need a place to start? Try one of these ideas for a tour of Elko County. Full Day Tour South
South Fork Reservoir, Jiggs, Harrison Pass, Ruby Mountain Wildlife Refuge, Lamoille This full day tour will take you to South Fork Reservoir and the little town of Jiggs. From there you go over Harrison Pass to the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. On your return you will pass through Ruby Valley and Fort Halleck. From Elko take the Lamoille Highway (Nevada State Highway 227) southeast toward Spring Creek. At the stoplight near the Spring Creek Plaza, approximately 6 miles, turn right on Jiggs Highway (Nevada State Highway 228). After traveling about 10 miles you will reach the South Fork Reservoir at the South Fork Dam. This is Nevada’s newest State Park with such amenities as campsites, restrooms, showers and a boat ramp. A popular fishing spot, the Nevada Department of Wildlife stocks the reservoir with trout and bass. Roughly 20 miles south of the turnoff to the park is the town of Jiggs, once the center of a large ranch in Mound Valley. Stop at the Jiggs Bar for a cool drink and see the mounted two-headed calf. Leaving Jiggs, travel three miles then turn left (east) to the Harrison Pass Road. The next leg of the tour takes you through Harrison Pass to the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge. When the blacktop road ends you will travel another 15 miles across the mountain range and Harrison Pass at 7,247-feet elevation. This road may be closed in winter so check with the Highway Department for road conditions before setting out. The road is steep, winding, rough and not maintained during the winter months. The gravel road comes to a dead end at State Route 767. Turn right (south) and

follow the road to the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters. Fishing and hunting regulation publications are distributed here. Head south and you will see the Ruby Marshes made up of more than 200 springs. Within the 38,000-acre refuge, created in 1938, a network of ditches and dikes were built to manage the riparian habitat. More than 200 species of birds, including trumpeter swans, canvasback and redhead ducks, cranes, herons, egrets, eagles, falcons and others make their home here. Five types of trout and bass were introduced to the area as well. This is a popular spot attracting anglers from around the world. After exploring the area around the refuge, head north again continuing to the town of Ruby Valley. If you are hungry, the Ruby Lake Resort is a good place to have a snack or a full meal. Continue north until you reach State Highway 229, turning left on the blacktop road. Heading on this northbound route you’ll pass through Arthur. About 12-miles further you will reach State Route 227 on your left where you can continue your tour to Lamoille or continue straight to Interstate-80. Westbound Interstate-80, another 12 miles further will bring you back to Elko. If you decide on heading toward Lamoille, you will pass by a memorial at the site of Fort Halleck where a military fort was built in 1867. After the discharge of the soldiers, medical aid and a government school were maintained here. The quaint community of Lamoille is about 10 miles past the Fort Halleck memorial. By this time you’ll probably be ready for dinner and the Pine Lodge in Lamoille is an excellent choice. Afterwards, continue along the Lamoille Highway to Elko for the completion of this full day tour.
Half Day Tour South
Lamoille, Lamoille Canyon National Scenic Byway, Fort Halleck To begin this half-day tour, head for the Ruby Mountains by following Hwy. 227 18 miles south of Elko. On the way you will pass Spring Creek, a residential community with an equestrian center, trap and skeet club, golf course and a private lake. Make a right turn right on Canyon Drive just before you reach the tiny town of Lamoille. This 12mile drive curves its way upward through the verdant, lush landscape of glacier-formed Lamoille Canyon. A four-stop, self-guided auto tour with geology interpretive exhibits leads travelers past meadows bursting with wildflowers, abundant wildlife, waterfalls and avalanche chutes. More than 100 miles of trails dotted with numerous pristine alpine lakes attract hikers to this beautiful mountain area. After exploring the canyon, head back down Canyon Drive into the charming town of Lamoille, boasting family ranches and country lanes. The tiny town is a popular destination with travelers from around the state. Have lunch and converse with locals at the Bitter Inn. If you arrive in the evening, enjoy a steak or seafood at the Pine Lodge. This longestablished dinner house and 3-room hotel has an astonishing display of game animals. Be sure to stop at The Gallery, a wonderful shop located across from the country store. It is filled with antiques, handcrafted furniture, fossils and minerals. Continue your drive through Lamoille on Hwy. 227. This well-graded dirt road takes you toward Hwy. 228. The winding road travels through 17-miles of beautiful ranch country. You’ll see a memorial marker at the site of Fort Halleck, an old military post that became a social center where many balls and dances were held. When you reach the end of Highway 228 turn left, heading north on paved Highway 229. When you reach I-80, go westbound. From the Interstate it is approximately 20 miles back to Elko.
Half Day Tour North
Tuscarora Leaving Elko on State Route 225, pass the airport, cross I-80, continue north into the Independence Mountains. You’ll pass Adobe Summit after traveling about 12 miles. Proceed another 14 miles to Dinner Station, a stop on the Elko-Tuscarora stage line. Before continuing their journey across the desert, stage passengers once stopped here for a meal while horses were fed and watered. Go ahead from here another four miles where you’ll reach State Route 226. Turn left toward Tuscarora. On the way you will pass through an area where the Petrochem Company drilled an experimental oil well in 1981. A bit further along you will see the bar and cabins at Taylor Canyon Resort. You could stop here for a stretch break and grab a snack or a meal. Shortly after the resort, less than one-half mile on the left is the graded dirt road to Tuscarora. After driving about a mile you can see the town on the hillside to your right. About five miles ahead take a right hand turn to this fascinating living ghost town.
Drive up and down the narrow lanes and see the remains of this once thriving mining town. Gold was discovered here in the spring of 1867. Old relics adorn many of the ramshackle buildings. There are no facilities here for tourists. However the Parks family operates a pottery school. Visitors may tour the establishment and see the hand-made kilns that fire products made of local clay. Pottery pieces are available for purchase from this renowned school. On your way out of Tuscarora, notice the old fenced in cemetery on your left. Be sure to stop and see the gravesites of early settlers and members of the old ranch families.

Half Day Tour East Clover Valley, Contact & Bishop Creek Turnoff On The California Trail Along Clover Valley Road are family ranches in operation since the 1860s. Descendants of early pioneers are still there helping each other to live off the land and maintain the cowboy way of life. On one of America’s most beautiful and authentically western ranch roads Angel Creek Ranch has modernized somewhat with the awardwinning Ruby Mountain Micro-Brewery operating to the rear of its 19th century house. Original pioneers rest in two graveyards, one overlooked by a natural rock formation “Hole in the Mountain.” This valley is described in Shawn Halls Connecting the West, or see A History of Clover Valley, Nevada by Robin Johns in the Northeastern Nevada Museum reference section. From the 4-Way intersection in Wells go about 5 miles south on US Highway 93, then turn west (right) to follow Clover Valley Road (Nevada 232) which runs south about 20 miles passing 18 ranches and several residences, then bends east to rejoin US 93.

Contact Beginning in the 1870s scattered mines were extracting gold and copper from four districts later known as the Contact Mining District. Many Chinese worked mines on China Mountain on commission. Productive new mines boomed Contact in 1897 through 1898, then slowed until a 1905 revival. Connected to the outside world by stagecoach and 16-mule freight wagons, Contact’s copper ore was more valuable after World War I increased copper demand and much more profitable after the Union Pacific short line being built between Twin Falls, Idaho and Wells, NV located a depot below town in 1925. Fires destroyed many of the town’s buildings, but it clung to life through a long decline until its post office closed in 1962. There are still a few residents and the gutted Contact Community Social Hall still stands, its pressed tin ornamental ceiling rusting a little more every winter. Go about 50 miles north of Wells on US 93, turn left and west for 3/4 of a mile. Site on State map. Historic marker just off US 93. Bishop Creek Turnoff On The California Trail For those with Greenhaw & Hyslop’s Entering the Great Basin, The California Trail Through Wells, Nevada there are a multitude of trail landmarks in the general vicinity of Wells, Nevada, including the Bishop Creek Turnoff.
Full Day Tour North Tuscarora, Jack Creek, Mountain City, Wildhorse, and North Fork. From Elko take State Route 225 North through the Independence Mountains to Tuscarora. The town can be reached by turning left (West) on State Route 226. About 19 miles from this intersection you will see a graded dirt road on your left and a sign directing you to the town site. Tuscarora sits on a hillside to the right about five miles up the road. Tuscarora lies in the Independence Valley, west of the mountains of the same name. Prospectors were the first white men interested in the area. In 1867 two brothers, Steve and John Beard established a mining district here. Once you have completed your exploration of Tuscarora, return the way you came to State Route 226, turning left. About six miles north you will see the Spanish Ranch founded by L.I. Hogle, one of the earliest landowners. Pedro and Bernard Altube bought Hogle Field and it became the core of operations for the Spanish Ranch. After traveling another five miles you’ll reach Jack Creek. The Jack Creek Lodge offers a place to stop for a meal, stretch your legs. A small store carries provisions where you can get a quick snack. After passing through Jack Creek you will reach a place to turn right onto FR473 toward the Jack Creek
Campground and pass through the Humboldt National Forest. The road is normally closed during winter months so check with the Highway Department before taking this route. It is also open range cattle grazing country, so watch for livestock. You will pass by the Doheny and Stevens ranches on your right. Once you reach State Route 225 turn left toward Wildhorse and Mountain City. Traveling north about eight miles is the Wildhorse Dam, a popular fishing area with local anglers. The Wildhorse State Recreation area has a paved boat ramp, restrooms, and campground. Though restricted in winter, this is one of the best places in the state for ice fishing. You can also get the latest fishing forecast at Dunn’s Wildhorse Resort, which also offers food, gas and overnight lodging. On your return trip you will pass through North Fork. The Highway Department Maintenance Station was once a ranching settlement with a school, saloon and grocery store. Finishing your tour, make your way back the remaining 54 miles south on State Route 225 to Elko. On your return trip, you will drive through some of Nevada’s greatest cattle ranch areas. The famous singer and actor, Bing Crosby purchased the Crumley ranches in this area in 1948. He was also named Elko’s Honorary Mayor.

Filled with unusual rock formations, this spectacular drive takes us through the glacially carved Ruby Mountain Wilderness. Next stop is the historic Little Church of the Crossroads, which has hosted more than 600 weddings. A tasty lunch at O'Carrols is an absolute must when visiting Lamoille. Returning to Elko, let's get serious about getting our “cowboy on” with a tour of the Western Folklife Center's Wiegand Gallery and 20-seat Black Box Theater. If time allows, cross the street to J.M. Capriola and watch a master saddle maker display his skills. Nearby, the new Cowboy Arts &Gear Museum, which displays some exquisitely decorated antique saddles and other vintage tack, also preserves the area’s ranching heritage. Enjoy dinner at one of Elko's famous Basque restaurants. Elko-area Basques take pride in the culture of their homeland, northern Spain/southwestern France. Bring your appetite because we're going family-style and nobody leaves hungry.

This morning's journey takes us west to Carlin and the Chinese Gardens Nature Study Area. Carlin's history is all about the Gold Rush and railroad construction. Chinese immigrants played a major role in the latter. Nature trails with interpretive signs share the story. Next it's on to Carlin Canyon Historical Wayside. This was a travel route for Native Americans, mountain men, pioneers and eventually the Central Pacific Railroad. Interpretive signs share the history of the 3,000year-old geographical formations. Our first stop this afternoon is a visit to Wells and the Trail of the 49ers Interpretive Center. An intriguing collection of artifacts reinforces the hardships early travelers experienced on the California Trail. Right outside Wells we'll begin our 11-mile Angel Lake Scenic Drive. This spectacular tour presents a panoramic view of the Humboldt

lko was not a primary destination for Western settlers, yet people from many cultures around the world discovered its special charms and decided to stay.
The result has been a colorful blend of traditions mixing cattlemen with Native American Indians and a variety of European societies. In the latter half of the 19th century people were drawn here to work on the railroad, mine for gold or develop some of the largest cattle ranches in the nation. Many stayed on to enjoy the small-town life in a unique environment with a diverse heritage. Tribes of Western Shoshone Indians roamed what is now Elko County for thousands of years before the West was settled by immigrants. Today, the Te-Moak Band is one of many that continue to teach their children the ancient customs of their ancestors. They celebrate with Powwows at least once a year, inviting everyone to watch them dance, play music and compete in games with other bands of Shoshone. Beginning in the 1880s, Basque immigrants traveled from the mountainous region between France and Spain to the American West to work as sheepherders. Like northeastern Nevada, the land they came from was open and isolated. Many of their descendants settled in Elko, some of them operating boarding houses. Their cuisine remains a highlight of any visit, with a selection of fine Basque restaurants to choose from. The National Basque Festival is held every year in Elko on the first weekend in July. People of Hispanic ancestry also have been an integral part of Elko culture, and they now

ulture make up about 20 percent of the population. Cinco de Mayo is a festive time of year that includes a parade and activities in the city park. Many of the early Hispanics were vaqueros, and today’s festivals featuresome of the elaborate rope tricks and other skills practiced by the cowboys. Immigrants also came from China, Italy, Scotland and other countries, often to work on the railroad or as cowboys on the open range. It is not unusual to see them in their western outfits, especially during the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering held each winter. Elko is one of the best places to find authentic cowboy clothing and paraphernalia. Elko was once called “the last cowtown in America” by writer and commentator Lowell Thomas. This aspect of the culture lives on today, and is celebrated every winter during the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. The Western Folklife Center, which sponsors the event, is open year-round. Stop by to view the exhibits or to enjoy a glass of sarsaparilla at the old-time bar. Step back into the past with a visit to the Northeastern Nevada Museum, where standing exhibits tell about the cultural heritage of Native American, Basque and other immigrants. One of the displays features a Levi tuxedo worn by Bing Crosby, who was named the town’s honorary mayor. 2018 Elko Visitor’s Guide

BOOT ART The people of Elko are warm and friendly as they strive to make visitors feel at home. The small-town atmosphere allows residents to greet one another by name, with a cheerful smile. It is that hospitality most visitors remember, and tell others about, when they return home. It is the people who add life and leisure to Elko’s wide-open landscapes, beckoning others to slow down and enjoy a taste of the simple life. In 2017 the Elko Arts and Culture Board sponsored a public Art program to celebrate the 100th year of our City. The Elko Centennial boot project was a massive community art project that brought many thousands of dollars of private investment to the community through giant Cowboy boots that represent the authentic Cowboy spirit and a unifying art project all over the City that tells visitors and locals alike, you can leave your boots on in Elko.
FIND THEM ALL! There are 33 unique Centennial boot installments proudly displayed throughout Elko. Can you spot them all? Head to www.everythingelko.com/ centenial-boots to find a map detailing the location of each installment.

Mining
Northeastern Nevada is the largest goldmining region in the country, making Nevada the fourth largest gold producer in the world behind Australia, South Africa and China.
Barrick Gold of North America’s Goldstrike Mine is one of the largest producing openpit mines in the world, with more than one million ounces taken from the ground and many years worth of production left. Barrick’s nearby Meikle Mine is the largest producing underground gold mine in North America. Gold mines are located throughout the region. However, most are on the prolific Carlin Trend and Cortez/Battle Mountain Trend, just a short drive west of Elko.
and solid land stewardship as it does to producing gold.
Since most of the above-ground gold visible to the naked eye was mined decades ago, today’s gold is microscopic — “specks of gold” as one journalist put it — and must be mined, processed and refined for market. This type of mining began in 1965 on the Carlin Trend at Newmont Mining Corp.’s Carlin East gold mine, which is still going strong today. Today’s gold miners use giantshovels to mine the earth, mammoth trucks to haul it, and massive plants to process the metal, making this unique job sector truly a “titan” of industry.
It is ironic to note hundreds, if not thousands, of prospectors combed over the Mining is Nevada’s second-largest driver of area 150 years ago in search of the mother the economy, next to gaming, and employs lode, never knowing they were standing on millions of ounces of gold “dust.” Of thousands of residents who are among the highest paid workforce in the Silver State, as course, that’s probably just as well since they didn’t have the technology to recover well as the nation. the precious mineral — a fact that might While many Americans continue to have driven them mad. embrace the romantic view of yesteryear’s gold prospector, complete with donkey and shovel, modern-day gold mining is actually a fascinating and complex process that pays as much attention to worker safety, sound environmental protections

Watch traditional Basque rural sports featuring weightlifting, wood chopping, tug-o-war and more. http://www.elkobasqueclub.com/

Silver State Stampede
The Silver State Stampede is the oldest rodeo in Nevada. The tradition of Elko’s annual rodeo started in 1913 when GS Garcia, the world-famous bit, spur, and saddle maker, decided that northern Nevada cowboys needed a rodeo, and the town needed the added entertainment and income. Today’s Stampede has grown into a multi-faceted event, showcasing the best of rodeo and ranch cowboys alike. http://www.silverstatestampede.com/ Art in the Park
Art in the Park is a weekend event with hundreds of vendors coming from the west to the Elko City Park to sell their artwork and handmade crafts from booth spaces rented by ECAC. Spruce Mountain The first trail centers around Spruce Mountain, located east of U.S. Highway 93 south of Wells. The trail goes to the site of the historic mining ghost town of Spruce Mountain, complete with abandoned structures and equipment, as well as several abandoned historic mine sites, such as the Black Forest and Killie mines. It winds through varied terrain and elevations, offering wildlife viewing opportunities such as deer, elk, wild mustangs, raptors and other birds, smaller mammals, and the occasional mountain lion track. The trail crosses several distinct ecosystems, from sagebrush flats to grazing meadows to mountainous evergreen forest to mountaintop barrens above the tree line. Nearby runs the path of the Hastings Cutoff, part of the original California Trail used by early emigrants moving west. Sunflower Flats/Merritt Mountain The second trail is to Sunflower Flats/Merritt Mountain (selected as one of the top 10 snowmobiling destinations in the world). It is located east of Mountain City Highway, north of Wildhorse Reservoir. The area is rich in historic mining culture as well as beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife. This trail will connect the Wildhorse Reservoir area with the historic town of Mountain City, which includes a Forest Service Visitors Center. It also goes near the mining ghost towns of Patsville and Rio Tinto. The gentle terrain of this trail is particularly well-suited to families with children, beginner ATV and snowmobile riders. The trail is also conducive to senior outdoor recreationalists, as well as the off-highway SUV driver.

Hamilton Bullion Trail The third trail is the Hamilton Bullion Trail area. It is located south of Bullion Road, between Elko and South Fork Reservoir and State Park. Its varied terrain – from moderate to extreme difficulty – offers a variety of recreation opportunities. Individuals living in the vicinity can offer outfitting and guide service, as well as ranch life experiences. The rim of the South Fork Canyon overlooks the ruts of the historic California Emigrant Trail (by directing recreationists to the canyon rim, rather than its floor, both the historical wagon trail and sensitive habitat remains safe from inadvertent damage). The exact routes of the three trails may be adjusted during various project phases. For more information such as maps and current status of the trail program, contact the Elko Convention and Visitors Authority at 1-800-248-3556 or visit www. ExploreElko.com. Winter months in the Elko area are usually blanketed with snow. Whether your idea of adventure revolves around the hush of falling snowflakes in a pristine alpine meadow or racing through powder with adrenaline-pumping speed, Northern Nevada can fulfill your longings. With the challenge of winter recreation come new risks to visitors unfamiliar to our terrain. To ensure safe adventures, please consider the following precautions: • Avalanches frequently occur throughout our mountain ranges where steep ridges may cause unstable snow pack conditions. Winter adventurists should be knowledgeable about avoiding likely avalanche areas. • When driving, carry snow equipment such as chains, shovels and sand. • Hypothermia can kill those who are unprepared for sudden cold temperatures, snowfall, icy rain and chilly winds. Sudden weather changes are common, so be prepared. • It is always wise to check road conditions before starting a drive. For upto-date information, contact the Nevada Department of Transportation at (775) 777-2700 (office) or 877-NV-ROADS (toll free road conditions info) or the website at: www.nevadadot.com. 2018 Elko Visitor’s Guide

Carlin
on the banks of the Humboldt River, Carlin is the oldest community in Elko L ocated County. Situated in a valley, the area is lush with natural springs and meadows. In the
early 1800s, emigrants bound for California used the area as a resting stop. The area was also a central trading area with native Americans. The area is known as a sportsman’s paradise, offering hunting, rock hounding, hiking and dirt bike riding. The emigrant trail can be traced through the valley floor and mountains surrounding the area. Nature study, picnicking and fishing are offered at the Chinese Garden Nature Study Area. Rare geological formations and history can be found in the Carlin Canyon. Ghost towns of Palisade and Alpha are minutes from the area. Geothermal activity is noted throughout the Humboldt River flowing through the southern portion of the city.

Wells
SMALL TOWN, BIG ENTERTAINMENT
W
ells lies at the Junction of I-80 & U.S. 93. Although the Central Pacific Railroad founded the town of Wells in 1869, use of the Humboldt Wells dates back thousands of years to the Western Shoshone who still live in a colony overlooking the town. Shoshone, Hudson Bay trappers, mountain men, and westbound wagon trains replenished at the Humboldt Wells. At the I-80 & US 93 intersection, Wells is the jump-off point for California-Oregon Trail sites; Baker City, Idaho; Jackson Hole; Salt Lake City & Park City, Utah; Yellowstone; and points elsewhere. Casinos! Real Cows! Real Cowboys! Some of the best hunting/ fishing west of Mississippi. In addition, of course, being Nevada, no personal income tax. Hub for regional ranchers and California Trail sites, Wells has an Emigrant Trail Center to tell the story. The Senior Pro Rodeo, Nevada State Fiddle Contest, annual car show and a half marathon to Angel Lake combine with stretches of Fabulous Forty—the Victory Highway—to give a period feel to this small town. Proud of its past, an airport, nine-hole golf course, casinos, and restaurants connect Wells to the twenty-first century. Wells has everything you need for your visit and is the Gateway to the East Humboldt Range, Angel Lake and some of the best hunting, fishing and camping in Northeastern Nevada.

Spring Creek
M
any of the residents who call Elko their home actually live in Spring Creek, a mostly residential community that stretches several miles between the county seat and the scenic Ruby Mountain range. The community is governed by a property-owners association, which also cares for amenities such as a private marina and campground. But Spring Creek also has commercial businesses, including a casino, grocery store and restaurants. Near the base of the Ruby Mountains lies the 23.4 square mile rural community of Spring Creek. Outdoor Recreation and Spring Creek have become synonymous. Lamoille Canyon, Southfork Reservoir State Park, and the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge are all within a short drive. There is easy access to Spring Creek via Lamoille Highway (SR227) from Interstate 80 in Elko, Nevada. Newcomers are welcomed and considered a valuable resource who bring fresh perspective and experience. It is easy to become involved in many active youth and adult clubs and organizations available. Spring Creek is family friendly. An example is the outdoor recreation at our 32 acre stocked private marina, which provides opportunities for fishing, canoeing, wildlife viewing, covered picnic areas with grills, open space and playground equipment. The Spring Creek Golf Course is located at the base of the Majestic Ruby Mountains. Our course is an uncrowded, par 71 18-hole golf course. Lamoille
his quiet hamlet at the base of the Ruby Mountains is a charming spot to visit or spend the night. A babbling creek runs through the groves of trees in the quaint town, while deer prance around in the pine-scented mountain air. Visiting Lamoille Canyon is a must for anyone who travels to Elko. But the town of Lamoille also is a must-see, and it is less than half a mile from the canyon road turnoff. They can also spend the night at Hotel Lamoille or rent a little house for the night or week, and they can visit the Gallery in Lamoille that features antiques and sheep wagons. At the end of the road is the Little Church of the Crossroads, a landmark visitors will surely want to photograph. Pine Lodge Restaurant features steak and seafood dinners among the lodge’s plentiful display of game animals mounted on the walls. Complete dioramas show deer and other wildlife in their natural surroundings. O’Carrolls is another favorite and a must stop in your visit to Lamoille. Your history of Lamoille wouldn’t be complete without a visit to O’Carrolls for a filling meal and the friendly atmosphere. Near Lamoille is the home of Ruby Mountain Heli-Ski. The company has been flying its clientele, including Hollywood celebrities, high into the mountain range for some of the finest skiing on the planet for more than 30 years. Each summer and fall, visitors flock to town for events such as the Lamoille Country Fair, held the final weekend in June. Artists and craftsmen show their work under the shady trees of Lamoille Grove, while vendors sell fresh-squeezed lemonade or tasty chorizos. 2018 Elko Visitor’s Guide

Tuscarora- although placer gold was discovered in 1867 it did not flourish until 1869 until the first Chinese moved into the area. In the 1870’s it became a silver mining town but fires plagued its existence. The town still thrives with a few people living there. Palisade- founded in 1868 as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. Population of approximately 600 with churches, lodges, businesses, and a residential district. After local area mining declined along with disastrous flooding and the closing of the railroad the town died out. Two buildings remain along with an extensive cemetery. Fort Halleck- established in 1867 soon becoming a trading center where local ranchers sold many of their goods and materials to the soldiers of the Fort. Designs to relocate the fort closer to the Central Pacific Railroad located in the local town of Halleck, twelve miles away, never materialized and the fort was shut down in 1886. Harrison Pass- a 1500 acre ranch was established in 1865 and by 1897 mining activity started. In 1916 a Schelite deposit was found and mining camps were erected. Today mill foundations are still visible as well some occupied cabins. Metropolis- established as a model farming district by the Pacific Reclamation Company, of New York in 1909. It boasted a population of 700 at its peak but unforeseen circumstances caused it to die and only ruins remain of once was a thriving community. Charleston- founded in 1876, it was originally named Mardis but was renamed after a local miner in 1900. Mining continued until 1942. It is a predominately ranching area today. Jarbidge- known as the last big boomtown of Nevada, the first prospecting began in 1860’s. Several more discoveries were made in 1909 and the boom lasted until 1932. It is still a thriving community known as a popular recreational area.
Gold Creek- placer gold was discovered in 1869. The town enjoyed such amenities as electric lights, a water system, telephones, and other conveniences. In June of 1898, mining in this area ended. Only a concrete sidewalk remains where there used to be a thriving town. Jack Creek- established in 1869 soon becoming a stop on the Northern Stage Company’s line from Tuscarora to Mountain City. It boasted of a store, a restaurant, a rooming house as well as the Jack Creek Opera House for many years. After 1886 the property was sold and developed for travelers and fishing parties and hunters and became a local sportsmen’s mecca.
