At the end of June the Snake River comes to life as boat racers flock to compete in the Idaho Regatta with three days of the fastest Inboard Circle Boat Racing in the United States. And in Mid-July the annual Wake in the Snake board competition takes place for those who crave the wave! Another great pass time on the river is to participate in the annual national Bass Fishing Contest as well as many other competitions. Spudman is a local triathlon featuring a 1.5K river swim, 40K bike with a race elevation of 4250’ and a 10K run on the country roads and canal banks. The course is 70% asphalt, 30% gravel and is a local favorite that brings a variety of visitors to town. For a more laid back day, take some time to do some bird watching and see the wide variety of avian species that flock to the river or let the gentle

current bring you some peace and quiet. Seasoned anglers can spend their time fishing for dozens of Idaho native species, most notably including catfish, salmon, and trout. Those that prefer to keep their feet on solid ground still have an abudnance of recreational opportunities. Areas for hunting, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, four wheeling, hiking, camping, snowmobiling, and biking are all readily available, and our variety of parks and public lands includes ample space for more traditional sports such as golf, disc golf, basketball, tennis, and volleyball. In short, if you’ve come seeking adventure, R&R, wildlife, or the great outdoors you’ve come to the right place. Water is our lifeblood for agriculture, recreation, and so much more. Play, stay, and have fun exploring southern Idaho!

en Hur would have felt right at home in the Idaho Regatta, pitting himself against two to seven other boats lapping the Snake River. “It’s a fabulous experience to watch all these boats racing around and around. It’s like a car race, an Indy 500, but on water,” says Kamille Mort. The Mini-Cassia area of southern Idaho may get only a dozen inches of precipitation a year. But the 1,078mile Snake River—the 13th longest river in the United States—runs through it. And it shapes the experience of living on the expansive Snake River Plain. Not only does the river irrigate the farmland, its water pumping through

canals dug by hand and horse-drawn scoops, but it provides a whale’s share of the fun quotient when residents aren’t busy driving tractors or turning dairy milk into cheese. They walk paths along the river, fish for trout, kayak and paddle board and watch for all kinds of pelicans, upland game birds, mule deer and other wildlife at Lake Walcott in the Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge. The annual Idaho Regatta held in July kicks off with a Fish Fry and entertainment on the Square in Rupert, followed by a boat parade and the actual races on the river. As many as a hundred racers turn out for the event, coming from Florida to California.

And hundreds more spectators line the banks, enjoying arts and crafts between races. Burley’s Zhallenna Nay grew up tubing on the Snake, which she equates to being on a lake. When the water turns solid in winter, she heads to Pomerelle Mountain near Albion where she likes to go snowmobiling. “It’s also fun to go to Lake Cleveland, near Mount Harrison,” she says. Elvin and Amy Lucas of Hooper, Utah, bring their two children, including 12-year-old Peyton—“a ripper on a wakeboard” –to spend a week on the Snake River during summer’s Wake on the Snake every summer. “We come three times a year,” said Elvin, an electrician. “We love that it’s not a busy place. 12 • Destination: Southern Idaho

We love the setting, the people, the little parks. It’s calm and relaxing, with plenty of elbow room. And you never feel rushed, as you do some places.” ”It’s not that cold and not hot so it’s a great place to recreate during summer,” adds Ryan Shimabukuro, a Layton, Utah, man who has judged the X Games, Olympic speed skating and Wake on the Snake. “Idaho Water Sports does a good job of putting on the event and the grassy area is great for spectators. And Wake on the Snake gets a great turnout from the local community, which is always fun for the competitors.”

DECLO, ALBION, ELBA, ALMO, OAKLEY, CASTLE ROCKS STATE PARK & CITY OF ROCKS NATIONAL RESERVE Get Ready to Roam in the Rocks. A favorite road trip adventure is an easy drive from Exit 216 off I-84. Head south on Hwy 77 to the small town of Declo. Be sure to stop in at the Sinclair Country Store in the center of Declo and fill up on gas and munchies. Surrounding farms produce world-renowned sugar beets, beans, grains and famous “Idaho Potatoes.” Don’t miss Declo Days on the second weekend in July with events Friday & Saturday including a parade, fun run, pancake breakfast, games and yummy food! Continue heading south along State Highway 77 and up the grade to Albion. The gateway to recreational areas in the mountains of southern Cassia County, Albion was the original county seat and is rich in history. Stop in at the historic Albion Campus of what was once the Albion State Normal School from 1893 to 1951. There you will find a museum filled with memorabilia from the college as well as the trial of the notorious Diamondfield Jack. The museum is open on Saturdays from mid-May to mid-September or by appointment. The rest of the campus, known as Campus Grove, is used for events, weddings, receptions, and boasts the largest haunted mansions in the Pacific Northwest during October!

Keep driving on scenic Hwy 77 towards Elba & Almo. Be sure to take the turn to Pomerelle Mountain Resort for awesome skiing, snowmobiling and snow shoeing in the winter or disc golf and mountain biking in the late spring & summer. There are plenty of hiking trails great for families and experts to try. Check out routes with the US Forest Service that will take you to some overnight backpacking spots around Lake Cleveland and the hidden lakes.

Back on Hwy 77, continue on to the picturesque valleys of Elba & Almo. They were settled in the 1870’s by pioneers traveling the California Trail. Be sure to stop in at the Visitor Center for the City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park. Get advice on exploring unique granite rock formations and see messages left by early pioneers in the rocks. Tracey’s General Store has a great lunch café and serves up tasty treats, or dine in and plan a stay at Almo Outpost & Inn. The rooms feature beautiful, one of a kind décor and the Outpost steaks and homemade desserts are incredible – rated one of the top 10 in Idaho! Be sure to try the Pioneer Pudding! Save time to soak at Durfee Hot Springs and shop for unique gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop.

Round out your loop drive through City of Rocks National Reserve to the historic, quaint town of Oakley. Located on Highway 27 between Burley and the City of Rocks National Reserve, Oakley has been designated a National Historic District because of its turn-of-the-century architecture. The streets are dotted with Victorian style homes and buildings, including the renovated Howells Opera House - home to the Oakley Valley Arts Council and numerous theatrical productions. The Oakley Museum on Main Street is open May through Labor Day. Learn about pioneers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints and the lasting impression they made on this charming town. Oakley is also known for its Oakley Stone, quarried from the South Hills and shipped worldwide. While you’re there be sure to stop in to Searle’s for a great bite to eat! Our favorite is the chicken Malibu sandwich paired with one of their delicious, real ice cream shakes! Make sure to ask for fry sauce – you won’t regret it! From Oakley it’s an easy and picturesque drive through the Mini-Cassia valley and back to I-84. For the ultimate road tripping CD, stop by the Mini-Cassia Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in Heyburn. Pick up your copy of “South Central Idaho’s Trails of Adventure” created & narrated by Dr. Ken Turner, also known as ‘Dr. History’-an 85 mile historic loop of Cassia County including map & directions. From start to finish it will feel like Dr. History is in the car with you! From Burley to Declo, Albion, Elba, Almo, City of Rocks, Oakley, and back to Burley, this CD is a must-have for a great adventure.

S T N’ DO

OF DAYTRIPPING

CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST AND PACK ACCORDINGLY.

There’s a saying around here, if you don’t like the weather just wait 30 minutes. Southern Idaho does experience all four seasons...sometimes in one day, or in one hour! So be sure to look over the local forecast before setting foot out the door. Bring an extra raincoat, sunscreen, hat and proper footwear. When the wind blows (and, yes expect this to happen) having an extra coat and pants won’t feel too bad either.

BRING CASH.

Paper folding money talks when fancy plastic money machines can’t be found. While a wide variety of places take credit and debit cards, some establishments in small towns always take cash. Cash is also key for paying state park fees. If you don’t have one, get a State Park Pass for $25 and enjoy all of Idaho’s beautiful parks.

EXPLORE LOCAL STORES AND RESTAURANTS.

Day tripping is about exploring new things! So skip the usual fare and try a place and food that’s not in your usual comfort zone. You’re in Southern Idaho now and we love FRY SAUCE! Be sure to ask for it with burgers, hotdogs, fries and anything else you want to savor with this nectar from the Gods. This is prime agricultural land known for POTATOES! Seek out amazing fries! Order the steak. Try the bread pudding. Half the fun of day tripping is savoring stuff you can’t always get back home.

DISRESPECT LOCALS.

Ok. Southern Idaho doesn’t mean we have a southern drawl accent. However we do say things like, “Crick” when we mean “Creek” as in a small stream of water. You may find farmers taking up two lanes of traffic or get a good laugh out of your waitress’ outfit, but keep it to yourself. Keep in mind many places aren’t open 24 hours, agriculture is king and the way of life can be a bit slower than a bustling metropolitan area.

SKIP THE LOCAL EVENTS.

Festivals, fish frys, 4th of July, county fairs, rodeos and so much more! If you want to see what your day-trip destination really has to offer, you’ve got to check out all there is to do and see! Go online to our website at minicassiachamber.com or visitsouthidaho.com and see what’s on the events calendar near you.

YOUR RESEARCH.

There’s this thing called the internet, and it’s got a wealth of information for local goings-ons. Call us here at the Mini-Cassia Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, (208) 679-4793, or check out our website at minicassiachamber.com/calendar for a month-tomonth guide listing year-round activities. We can help you plan out your route. and print it out if you’d like. Also, make sure you know what you’re getting into. If you don’t like water, skip a trip on the Snake River and head to Castle Rocks State Park. Love aqua! Then be sure to take time to see Lake Walcott or Milner Lake and the Snake River!

RUPERT HISTORIC SQUARE, NEPTUNE PARK, LAKE WALCOTT STATE PARK, SPLASH PARK IN PAUL PARK PARADISE OK, don’t leave home without your swimsuit, a towel, good walking shoes and your fun meter set to high! Some of the coolest, well-kept secrets on the north side of the Snake River are the number of amazing parks in Minidoka County. Start the day off with breakfast and a stroll through Rupert’s Historic Square. Located in the heart of the City of Rupert, the square is the centerpiece for the city’s famous week long 4th of July celebration. The festival features a grand hometown parade, Christmas in July pancake breakfast, music every night, great food, rides and of course, FIREWORKS! Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the square is also home to a great winter holiday tradition. Designated as a Christmas City USA, Rupert kicks off their festivities the night after Thanksgiving with hot chocolate and a chili feed, followed by Santa Claus and a flip of the switch to light up the entire area with lights! The entire event is capped off by a breathtaking fireworks display and visits with Santa. Stroll and shop around the square for a variety of restaurants, specialty shops and more. If the weather is hot, head to Neptune Park just a few minutes away for a dip in the city pool. A local favorite, Neptune Park also features a disc golf course, lots of picnic areas and shade. SNAKE RIVER, BURLEY, HEYBURN, OAKLEY The majestic Snake River ties the Minidoka and Cassia counties together. With 26 miles of accessible river frontage (see the center section map in this issue) THIS is why so many people travel from out of the area to the Mini-Cassia area. In summer, the Snake River is a boaters paradise. The river may be shallow in places, but there are plenty of easy boat launches, parks and docks for fishing, wakeboarding, surfing, waterskiing or just plain floating the river.

Nearby Scholer Park has a small stretch of sandy beach that’s shared by fishermen and paddle boarders. Green, grassy areas make it easy to meet, assemble gear and go! Explore the islands or paddle across to Heyburn’s spectacular Riverside Park on the north side of the Snake River. Use the boat docks or shoreline and check out the park’s great walking path and arboretum. There are a reservable gazebos for family reunions or birthday parties or check out the local concerts that take place in the amphitheater.

One of our favorite spots for easy boating access is the River Front Park in Burley. It has plenty of parking, a wide ramp and quality docks, plus picnicking areas. If you have time, swing in for a round of riverside golf during the day! You’ll experience great water both up and down river from the launch. It’s a favorite spot for water lovers to play with all their toys! Jet skiers and paddle boarders love this stretch too! The summer months are busy for this park with the Idaho Regatta in June, Wake in the Snake wakeboarding competition in early July and the famous Spudman Triathlon the last Saturday in July. 22 • Destination: Southern Idaho

There are plenty of places up and down the river to find water access that fits your needs. Check out the City of Burley’s website (burleyidaho.org) for a list of great parks and other events in the area. Or head south to explore the Oakley Dam and Goose Creek Reservoir, a great place for fishing and boating. When the dam was constructed between 1909 and 1912 it was the largest earth-filled dam in the world. Easy access to camping, fishing and hunting make these waters a true gateway to recreation. In the summer, take the scenic byway as alternate entrance to City of Rocks National Reserve.

name that crop Magic Valley Agriculture

With more than 26 miles of accessible shore, the Snake River winds its way through the Mini-Cassia Area providing some of the most productive farm land in the nation. There are no limits to the benefits the river provides for us, and we take full advantage of that fact to irrigate a wide variety of crops grown throughout the area. Can you spot them all on your journeys?

Alfalfa is a perennial flowering plant cultivated as an important forage crop in many countries around the world. It is used for grazing, hay, and silage. Alfalfa sports the largest acreage in the Mini-Cassia area with over 142,000 acres in production.

Corn Silage is used as the primary feed on most of the dairies in the Mini-Cassia area with high energy and high fiber. Corn silage is corn that is chopped just before the corn ripens. There are 34,565 acres in corn in the area.

Barley a member of the grass family, is a major cereal grain. Barley is raised for both feed and for beer production in the area. The acreage in the two county area is over 81,000 acres.

Wheat is a cereal grain. This grain is grown on more land area than any other commercial food. Wheat acres in the area total 76,369 acres.

24 • Destination: Southern Idaho

The famous “Idaho Potato” is popular to grow in this area of Idaho. There are several potato processors both for fresh pack and for processing into fries and chips. Potatoes from this area are sold all over the world. Potato acres in the area total over 54,800 acres.

Sugar beets are grown commercially for sugar production. The largest sugar beet processing facility in the world is located in the Mini-Cassia area in Paul, Idaho. The area produces sugar beets on 72,159 acres of prime farm ground.

The Mini-Cassia area uses Mustards as a biofumigant for soils that are going to be planted to other crops.

Triticale (trit-ih-KAY-lee) is a hybrid of wheat and rye. It is thought to contain the best of both grains and is attracting interest due to its higher protein content compared to wheat.

Dry Beans which include dry beans, dry peas, lentils, and garbanzo beans or chickpeas are grown on 14,159 acres in the Mini-Cassia area.

Safflower is commercially cultivated for vegetable oil extracted from the seeds. Safflower is a minor crop in the Mini-Cassia area comprised of around 1500 acres per year.

FORWARD THINKING Bridging the gap between industry, technology, and schooling while maintaining unmatched quality of life and growth in the Magic Valley

Brent Tolman left the Mini-Cassia area to pursue college and launch his career. But he couldn’t wait to get back. “There are so many opportunities to play outdoors here—I’ve got 26 miles of river we can run a boat on less than a half hour from my driveway. I can play a round of golf in the morning and head to Pomerelle to go skiing or snowmobiling in the afternoon,” says Tolman, who moved back to Burley 19 years ago. “We’ve got great plays put on by the arts center. And we’ve got a good pace of life—a small-town feel where people know people. Yet it’s just over a couple hours to Boise and Salt Lake City if you need a big city fix.”

30 • Destination: Southern Idaho

Making that lifestyle possible are all the good job opportunities, says Chet Jeppesen, who is with the Idaho Department of Labor. Cassia County, long known for growing potatoes and sugar beets, has become known as the food processing capital of Idaho. And this is not the food processing of 20 years ago that meant sorting potatoes on a conveyor belt. “Everything is run through computerized control machines today,” says Tolman, regional business specialist with the Idaho Department of Labor. “Today’s food processing involves high-tech automated systems that require welders, fabricators and others with a wide range of technical skills.” Until recently, there was a

At the same time, industry didn’t realize how schools were employing robotics in their curriculum--Cassia Regional Technical Center, for instance, has fielded the fourth best robotics team in the world in competition. Area high schools and

on-the-job tasks, such as performing diagnostic tests on machinery and recalibrating sensors. Unemployment in the Mini-Cassia area is currently 2.7 percent—about as low as it can get. New expansions and development are bringing more jobs to the area. The Hilton, for instance, is building a four-story, 80room Hampton Inn with a surf-and-turf style restaurant

in Burley’s new River Bend Business Park set to open in early 2018. Another 18 lots on the property are available for retail and office development. This is the latest development in an area that’s trending toward growth, says Doug Manning, Burley’s economic development director: “We’ve had several large projects over the past 10 years and we don’t see an end to it.” www.minicassiachamber.com • 31

$200 MILLION ECONOMIC EXPANSION The world’s largest manufacturer of frozen potato products wants to expand its facility outside of Burley as well. McCain Foods USA announced it will invest more than $200 million into expanding the plant, creating 180 jobs and increasing potato production throughout the state. The company will construct additional buildings behind its existing facilities, Burley City Administrator Mark Mitton said. “This is the type of thing that can happen when everyone sits down together and can make it happen,” Burley’s Economic Development Director Doug Manning said. “Statewide, we’ve made a commitment to McCain Foods, and McCain Foods will make a commitment to the state.” The city began working with McCain Foods’ team late last year, and the state incentive was granted in December. The new production capacity for frozen french fries will require another 15,000 acres of potatoes to be grown per year from eastern Idaho to the Oregon border, Mitton said. “We’re very happy they decided to build a new plant in Burley,” he said. “It’ll be good for the farmers — more contracts there.” Over 20 years, the state’s gross domestic product will be enhanced an estimated $560 million. And aside from the new jobs at the facility, the entire project will drive 380 new jobs, the state announced. 32 • Destination: Southern Idaho

“Between construction activities, employment at the plant, and the sourcing of local supplies throughout our Idaho potato farmers, there’s no question that the economic impact of McCain’s investment will help expand our solid economic base throughout Southern Idaho,” Lt. Gov. Brad Little said in a statement. “It’s certainly exciting news for our industry,” she said. “I think it’s a real testament to the quality of our potatoes and the reliability of our supply here.” The expansion, Manning said, “casts a spotlight on us as a community.” Construction and labor alone will bring in a lot of money over the next year to year-and-a-half, Mitton said. And the jobs that will be created are more technical and higher-paying — the average wage is $44,200. Cassia County has reported significantly low unemployment this year — at 2.7 percent in March — which raises the question of how McCain Foods will get the work force it needs. But Manning believes that the job demand will take care of itself, with people coming into the area as jobs are created. And Burley’s homebuilders are responding to accommodate those needs, Mitton said. “We’re trying to drastically increase the housing stock.” Manning expects multiple subdivision expansions, new subdivisions, and new market rate apartments on Highland Avenue to begin or continue construction this year.

WITH JEFF McCRAY, McCAIN FOODS PLANT MANAGER Could you give a brief history of McCain Foods in Burley, Idaho? When did this all start and what has the operation grown to today? McCain Foods has been doing business in Burley, Idaho for over 20 years. The cornerstone of Burley Plant 1 was laid by Governor Robert Smylie in October of 1960. Today Burley is comprised of two factories sitting on 97.7 acres. Why the expansion in Burley? What makes this area of Southern Idaho so unique for what McCain Foods does? How does this compare to some of the other facilities around the world? The State of Idaho is a great place to do business, the famous Idaho potato makes potato processing an obvious choice. Our strong relationship with family growers and the high quality, dependable raw material around Burley strengthen that choice. Finally, our talented and hardworking workforce make Burley a top-notch facility. What will be taking place at McCain Foods in Burley over the next several months for the new expansion? Hiring? How many employees and what types of jobs? What is the construction timeline/when ready for operation? What will the new expansion do/produce? In the next 12 months, the team will be placing the final touches on the design, securing the proper permits, building a state- of-the-art factory and recruiting top talent to staff that factory. We will be hiring a multitude of positions from boiler and refrigeration operators, electronic technicians, to equipment technicians. McCain Foods is working closely with the College of Southern Idaho and the Idaho Department of Labor to develop recruitment and training plans to ensure a vertical start up. What does this mean for the surrounding farms and communities? In addition to the 180 new McCain positions created by the expansion, an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 acres of additional raw potatoes will supply the expansion. McCain Foods will source as much raw potato supply as possible from surrounding communities close to the Burley, Idaho facility. This project continues to solidify the “Magic Valley Miracle”. McCain Foods has an incredible reputation for being an active supporter of community, is this unique to the Burley facility or part of company philosophy? McCain Foods contributes to good causes around the world – we are proud to integrate into the communities where we operate and play a positive role in improving the quality of life for our employees, their families and their neighborhoods. One of McCain Foods core values is to “Be Good, Do Good”-- it is a fundamental part of who we are. We recognize we are integrated deeply into rural communities where our factories are located, so we want to make sure our lasting impact makes our communities better than how we found them. Our involvement is mostly driven locally and managed by the individual regions, so the support we give can take many forms – generous efforts of our people, transfer of knowledge and expertise to growers, donation of products and services and sponsorships that inspire broad participation towards worthwhile goals.

Minidoka Memorial Hospital is growing to meet the needs of the Mini-Cassia Community. With a new Emergency Department and updated Medical Floor our patients and family experience can only be described as exceptional. If you haven’t seen the new look of MMH stop by for a tour. We have purchased the Toshiba Prime 80 CT Scanner with the patient in mind. With 80 slices per rotation all CT procedures will be done faster and more accurate. We offer some of the most advanced medical technology available in the Magic Valley which is only exceeded by the skill and compassion of our professional staff. If you’re seeking a new physician, out-patient testing (any doctor can order out-patient test), Long Term Care, Home Health or specialized joint replacement surgery; Minidoka Memorial Hospital should be your first choice. Ask for us by name. In 2015, MMH built a brand new Medical Office Building (MOB) that is technologically advanced, ergonomically modern and esthetically pleasing to patients, providers and general public. The new building also provides the latest in electronic capabilities in regards to Electronic Health Records. The new MOB houses an Internal Medicine specialists, three Family Practice prov as well as three mid-lev practitioner’s. Minidoka Memorial Hospital has never stood still and we will continue to meet and surpass the needs and expectations of our community and those that visit the Mini-Cassia area.
