Renson Invisivent EVO HR self-regulating window vent As a specialist in natural ventilation, Renson provides window vents that ventilate buildings and at the same time meet the acoustic requirements. The Invisivent window ventilator can be incorporated almost invisibly above the window guaranteeing a maximum inlet of natural light and a stylish finish.
A
ventilation system with natural fresh air supply has many benefits. It is a healthy choice first and foremost because the fresh air is supplied directly. This also saves energy immediately, because a natural flow of fresh air means no energy is required. Thanks to its simplicity in design, the system is also particularly maintenance-friendly.
Invisivent for wind-impacted applications The Invisivent EVO HR provides the ideal solution for wind-impacted applications such as high-rise buildings (up to 1200Pa) and apartment buildings on the coast. It contains acoustic material, that muffles external noises as much as possible (e.g. wind, seagulls, traffic), which increases user
comfort. The presence of various types of sound-damping foam in the interior profile provides three possible levels of sound insulation (basic, high or ultra). In addition, the rain cap, which is mounted as standard, ensures perfect water resistance in even the most extreme conditions. Extra mounting screws and clips guarantee satisfactory stability and sturdiness of the entire window. The Invisivent EVO HR combines its functionality with maximum respect for the architecture since it is installed above the window frame, behind the wall, so that the surface area of the glass is not reduced. The system can be used on all types and depths of windows. This self-regulating thermally broken flap ventilator offers a maximum airflow of 15.9l/s/m at 2Pa and a sound reduction in open position up to 42dB.
Acoustic window vents Noise pollution can have a serious impact on the human environment. To keep unwanted noise out of houses on a busy street or out of bedrooms you can also opt for the acoustic version, the Invisivent EVO AK, discretely integrated above windows. Thanks to an acoustic module AK33, you can even transform a standard Invisivent window vent in an existing installation into a soundproof version.
i-Flux technology Thanks to the application of i-Flux technology, Renson can guarantee maximum comfort with minimum energy loss. i-Flux technology is based on three principles: a self-regulating flap reacts to changes in pressure ensuring a constant airflow that prevents draughts, even with wind gusts. A manually controlled inner flap determines the required airflow depending for example, on the occupancy in the room. And the shape of the inner flap conducts the fresh air upwards resulting in optimal distribution throughout the space and guaranteeing maximum comfort. 8 www.rensonuk.net * info@rensonuk.net ( 01622

TORMAX has supplied and installed over 20 automatic entrances to the prestigious Zig Zag building in London Victoria. In addition to the two glass revolving doors leading to the main office entrance, TORMAX was responsible for the automatic sliding and swing doors installed to various restaurants including Jamie’s Italian and Iberica.
T
his has been a significant project worth over £200k,” confirmed MD for TORMAX, Simon Roberts.“Our comprehensive range of Swiss-designed iMotion door operators meant that we were able to offer the ideal solutions for the demands of the different locations.” Combining energy efficiency with exceptional reliability, the iMotion range is noted for the longevity of its operators, even in the busiest environments. Developed by Land Securities and completed in November 2015, the Zig Zag building is 187,000ft2 of high-end commercial office space situated on an island site surrounded by restaurants and retail outlets. Stretching over 11 floors, the building delivers bright, airy, customisable office space as well as three floors of retail outlets.TORMAX was contracted to supply and fit external automatic entrances by contractor Josef Gartner GmbH. The two TORMAX glass revolving entrances are constructed using a light frame solution. Designed to be extremely strong, the entrances appear to be almost entirely glass with just a thin crafted aluminium profile on the door leaves and
narrow chrome steel profiles on the drum walls. Further contributing to the elegant appearance, the ceiling cover is entirely glass and there is no obtrusive central column. Driving the revolving doors,TORMAX 5251 high torque microprocessor operators produce an exceptionally smooth, quiet operation, whilst simplified programming options ensure settings are adapted to consistently minimise energy consumption. Elsewhere in the Zig Zag development, TORMAX recommended its iMotion 2401 sliding door operators, as well as its iMotion 1301 swing door drives and underfloor concealed iMotion 1401 swing door operators. The entire iMotion range has been designed for reliability, longevity and minimal routine maintenance with no internal elements to wear out, such as gears and brushes. “We were delighted to work with Gartner on this iconic development,” commented Simon Roberts.“With such a broad range of technologically-advanced door drives, as well as over 60 years’ experience in the market, TORMAX is well placed to handle the varied demands of a project such as this.”

Stylish staircase solutions Glass staircases offer a stylish solution for contemporary properties. Whether a person is looking to add a focal point to their home or a stand out feature to their business property, CANAL can fabricate a bespoke staircase to suit all applications.
D
epending on requirements, stair balustrades can be manufactured from clear toughened glass (10 – 19mm), low iron toughened (10 – 19mm) and toughened laminates (13.5 – 48mm). In addition, stair treads can be manufactured from low iron toughened glass or standard float glass (39mm +). There are also a variety of finishes to enhance the clean, modern and sophisticated aesthetic of glass staircases. Design options include sandblasting, pattern inlays and water jet cutting.
Helical glass staircases

CANAL has completed the interior of a stunning home in Cheltenham, which included a large, helical staircase and first floor balustrade. Starting in its manufacturing site in Nottingham, CANAL started by fabricating the bespoke, curved metalwork forming the initial shape of the staircase. The main structure was designed to be fully supported by only the base and the first floor landing creating a single sweeping stringer, which produced zero flex when in use. On the inside of the stainless steel stringers, special sections were fabricated into the side to host LED lighting, which was programmed with ambient changing colours and installed with sensors around the staircase to light up when movement occurred. Each glass tread was triple laminated with water jet cut fixing holes underneath to incorporate stainless steel support fixings. From above, these fixings were near on invisible due to a custom sand blasted detail for increased safety under foot as well as style. The helical feature staircase was completed onsite with a curved glass balustrade that carried onto the first floor to complement the modern look throughout the home.
Spiral glass staircases Curved glass staircases can also be produced in a tight spiral design, which is a great option for properties that see floor space as a premium. Nestled in the heart of London, Parliament View apartments offer uncompromised views across the capital towards the Houses of Parliament. However, CANAL was approached by a client who wanted more space within their apartment by expanding the upper floor and creating an elegant access solution. In order to create an open area on the upper floor of the apartment, CANAL fabricated and installed a new steel structure, providing support for an extended mezzanine landing as well as a surface to affix seamless low iron glass balustrades to, maximising the flow of light through the space. The client was keen to make a feature of the staircase as well as the design being space efficient.A stainless steel central column was fabricated to support the staircase construction and a stainless steel ribbon stringer to host the low iron glass balustrade. Triple laminated low iron glass treads, with bespoke etching, were installed to match the balustrades and allow light to flow, while a simple satin polished stainless steel handrail was installed to complement the central column, and provide a stylish and safe solution. CANAL provides the complete package from concept to completion and ensures every staircase project is installed to the highest standard as this will determine its future performance, durability and appearance. 8 www.canal.eu.com

Glass clamp MOD 42 The new MOD 42 glass clamp has a unique place in the market. It is German AbZcertified and combines glass and steel in a visually pleasing design. Its square form makes for a contemporary yet timeless design. The glass clamp is suitable for glass thicknesses of 6 – 12.76mm and comes in stainless steel or zamak, with eight different finishes. To give railings a really flawless appearance, the MOD 42 can also be supplied as a straight or 90° angled glass connector.
Easy Glass Hybrid Easy Glass Hybrid is Q-railing’s lightest and most economical glass railing system. It is a ‘hybrid’ in the sense that it can be mounted either as a glass balustrade or as a baluster railing with slender balusters and a continuous glass infill. New in this range is the fascia mount baluster. The Easy Glass Hybrid system is designed for ease of installation and low maintenance. The base shoes can be mounted on any surface, concrete or metal, with screws alone. Mounting and adjusting the glass panels is also straightforward – a job for one person that requires no special tools. 8 www.q-railing.com

Doors, Windows & Balustrades
Refurbishing Kingston Hospital In 2014, the Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust embarked on a major refurbishment programme to replace the windows and doors of the hospital’s Esher Wing. The work was commissioned not only to improve the building’s aesthetics, but also to improve thermal performance, reduce energy costs and deliver improved patient, visitor and staff comfort.
T
he seven-storey block contained a mix of wards with all four elevations still featuring the building’s original 1960s, heavy-duty steel windows which were beyond their useful life. As a consequence, the performance of the windows had become extremely poor, with both draughts and water ingress causing major issues. The trust awarded a management contract to construction consultant Pellings, which took responsibility for the detailed design, specification, procurement and project management of the whole programme. ARJ was subsequently appointed main contractor, with the fenestration fabrication and installation contract being won by Heritage Window Systems (HWS), one of Smart Architectural Aluminium’s specialist partners. HWS’ first task was to undertake a survey of the wing, which revealed a significant variation in the size of the window apertures. To address this, Heritage and Smart developed a novel solution – effectively based on a curtain wall ‘grid’ system with a variable trim to allow for different sizes of window units. Chris White, Director at HWS, explained: “This was the only way that we could meet the programme and give the installation team enough flexibility onsite to react to programme changes.
12
“Although the size of the windows were quite large, our experienced teams of fabricators and installers were able to deal with these units. The main issues we faced were logistical. With work being carried out as the hospital continued to operate, we had a very exacting programme to follow – and a period of just nine hours to complete the upgrade for each unit. In that time, our teams had to take out the old windows, fit the new units, change the radiators and clean the area to a clinical standard. HWS completed the work in just eight months. During this time, the company installed around 1200 Smart Eco Futural windows – with a combination of tilt and turn and bottom-hung casement windows – as well as seven sets of Smart Wall double doors and the MC600 curtain wall grid system. MC600 was specified due to the requirement to hang brise soleil units from two of the building’s elevations. Paul Dancey, Operations Manager of BMI’s Coombe Wing which formed part of the refurbishment programme, said: “The project was exceptionally well managed, with the clear communications between all parties a vital component of its success. As a result of the programme, we now have state-of-the-art windows which have considerably improved patients’ comfort and provided an improved

All parties worked collaboratively to ensure that the programme was achieved with little disruption to the hospital.” 8 www.smartsystems.co.uk

Doors, Windows & Balustrades Images: Left: Traditional and coordinated timber panelling makes a real eye-catching contribution to the streetscape of this pretty location Below left: The roadside frontage has been completely redesigned with wide, double glazed, six over six sliding sash windows
Conservation timber facade solution for KoHo Coffee Conservation timber windows and doors, by Mumford & Wood, have been designed into the remodelling of a neighbourhood high street gallery, which is now the successful, independently-owned KoHo Coffee. Situated on Nightingales Corner in the village of Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire, the property was developed by Richard Anthony Developments.
K
oHo Coffee has introduced a fun, rich, dark and smooth atmosphere to this 20th century village and is definitely the place to sit back and savour lunches and sweet tasting treats. Previously a glass fronted art gallery, the roadside frontage has now been completely redesigned with wide, double glazed, six over six sliding sash windows while a recessed, half glazed, double Conservation entrance door is complete with an overhead fanlight.
Traditional and coordinated timber panelling, by Mumford & Wood, completes this elegant facade and makes a real eyecatching contribution to the streetscape of this pretty location. Replacement Conservation sash windows, in a bay configuration, have also been specified to the first floor windows of a separate apartment. This has been converted into a commercial office and is accessed via its own private entrance door adjacent to KoHo.
“We worked very closely with the developer, Richard Anthony, a long-standing client, to achieve his vision for KoHo’s frontage, and what we delivered is a far cry from the original design,” says Tom Barfield, Regional Sales Director for Mumford & Wood. “This primarily consisted of open-in bi-folding doors which wouldn’t have given the same cosy appearance and atmosphere KoHo has now. We deliberated on the door position and other major elements of the design until we had it just right. “The Conservation frontage design has become popular since a similar design was introduced a few years ago for Café Colbert in London’s upmarket Sloane Square,” continues Barfield, “and more recently for Artist Residence in Pimlico Village. This hotel/ restaurant has just picked up the London Hotel of the Year 2016 award, and we are very proud to have been associated with its shabby chic appeal. And now we have the funky KoHo Coffee, so I think we are setting a trend here.” Founder Sami, who manages KoHo, said:“The look and feel of KoHo has raised the bar in Little Chalfont, enhancing the area with a sophisticated facade. Our partnership with Mumford & Wood has again been a great success.” Windows, doors and panelling for KoHo were finished in RAL 7024 Graphite Grey externally. The dual colour paint, or stain, option in RAL 9003 Signal White was chosen internally to add light and spaciousness. Mumford & Wood uses only high quality, spray-applied, micro-porous finishes that provide durable, low-maintenance protection. Made-to-order Conservation products, a fully coordinated collection of sash and casement windows, French doorsets, bifolding and entrance doors, special shapes and fixed glazed panels, combine modern manufacturing technology with superior aesthetics and has earned the brand an award-winning status. Manufactured in accordance to the British Woodworking Federation’s Wood Window Alliance standards, Conservation products achieve exceptional U-values that exceed the requirements of current Part L Building Regulations’ and are BRE A+ rated. 8 www.mumfordwood.com

Doors, Windows & Balustrades Images: Left: Gilgen SLX automatic sliding doors with bi-parting door leaves were installed to the entrance of the new ITM reception area Below left: The external arrangement consists of a telescopic door, side screens and four fanlights suiting a structural opening of 6 x 4m
Opening doors for Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham Gilgen Door Systems has installed three new SLX automatic sliding door systems at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Working with Vinci Construction, the door installations were part of a major redevelopment of facilities at the hospital including the creation of a new world-class clinical research unit for the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM).
T
hese extensive works followed a master plan developed by Glenn Howells Architects, containing office space, laboratories and collaborative working areas, as well as a clinical trials facility on the university hospital’s Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust site.
Gilgen SLX automatic sliding doors with bi-parting door leaves were installed to the entrance of the new ITM reception area. The attractive new reception retains an art deco style providing a stylish and tranquil environment for visitors. The SLX doors improve accessibility for visitors and are set
back from the external doors creating an internal lobby that improves comfort in the reception area. The 24.8mm double glazing fitted throughout the doors also improves energy efficiency by reducing building heat loss. The glazed door leaves and side panels are complemented by overhead fanlights which draw in natural light and maximise the visual appeal of the entrance. Gilgen’s SLX drive and flush mounted sensors are incorporated within the height of the door frame providing a low profile appearance. The bi-parting arrangement of these doors, with a clear opening width of 1.5m, helps improve accessibility and the stylish PSX door profiles are powder coated, blending harmoniously with the stylish interior design. Elsewhere, the main entrance of the old Queen Elizabeth Hospital – renamed the Heritage Building – has been reconfigured as four wings set around a newly-formed courtyard. Following a site survey to review safety considerations, Gilgen was commissioned to install two sets of telescopic sliding doors configured around a lobby area for wheelchair storage. The main advantage of these two leaf automatic doors is a clear width of 2.5m, suitable for a variety of users including disabled persons, wheelchair users, children, the elderly and staff moving heavy equipment and supplies. The external arrangement consists of a telescopic door, side screens and four fanlights suiting a structural opening of 6 x 4m, whilst the internal door incorporates two overhead fanlights matched to a 3.7 x 4m structural opening. Both of the doors are activated by infrared motion sensors which constantly scan the area for approaching traffic, and an additional side-scan monitors an adjacent corridor for pedestrians approaching from an acute angle. In accordance with BS EN16005 guidelines glazed pocket screens are incorporated to remove any risk of accidental contact with the moving door leaf. Gilgen Door Systems has 50 years’ experience of installing door systems in healthcare and other environments. The company provides a complete solution covering the manufacture, installation, service and repair of all types of automatic doors, fire doors, security doors, shutters and sliding wall systems for any application. 8 www.gilgendoorsystems.co.uk * info@gilgendoorsystems.co.uk ( 0800

James Latham answers the prayers of an East London church James Latham has supplied 40 door blanks from its Moralt Laminesse FireSmoke range to a listed Grade I building in the East End of London. The doors are now for all to see in the iconic Christ Church at Spitalfields, which is nestled between bustling Brick Lane and the infamous Spitalfields Market.

From start to finish the ambitious renovation project was completed in just under six months, with just three months of that being onsite. Marc Horsman, from Icklesham Joinery, said:“As soon as we were commissioned with this job we knew James Latham would be the perfect partners to supply the door blanks for this high-end fit out. We have a great long-standing relationship with James Latham, and in particular, I have always been impressed with its extensive range of performance door blanks solutions.” Darren Gentle, Door Champion at James Latham’s Thurrock depot that supplied the door blanks, said:“To be able to complement a historic Grade I listed building such as this with a modern, highly technical solution is a challenge in itself, but we are very proud of the end result and are confident that these Moralt Laminesse FireSmoke door blanks not only look great, but more importantly, will consistently perform to an extremely high-level.” 8 www.lathamtimber.co.uk

Doors, Windows & Balustrades Images: Left: The gloomy entrance at the Places For People Group’s headquarters was transformed with the installation of a light, spacious and draughtproof curved lobby Below left: There has been an increase in demand for automatic doors that have sustainable properties such as low emissivity coatings
Designing sustainability into an entrance Energy efficiency is not only an important objective of architectural design, but a requirement thanks to the revisions to Part L of the Building Regulations (Conservation of Fuel and Power) in 2014. Here FC&A speaks to Andy Howland, Sales Director of GEZE UK, about the design techniques that can be used to reduce energy loss during the specification of entrances.
B
y their very nature, entrances create energy loss as they are designed to allow people, often in large numbers, to move quickly in and out of a building. But as the doors open to let people in or out, heated or cooled air can escape. This can lead to unnecessary energy consumption, as well as creating blasts of hot
or cold air which is uncomfortable for staff. One way to help increase sustainability, and maintain a pleasant and constant internal temperature, is through the creation of a lobby. A perfect example is the Places For People Group’s headquarters at The Pavilions in Preston, where the primary aims of the project were aesthetics and environmental control.
In this case, the gloomy entrance was transformed with the installation of a light, spacious and draughtproof curved lobby, which was designed to maximise space and light, as well as allowing for pedestrian traffic flow. It features two sets of automatic biparting curved sliding glass doors powered by GEZE’s energy-efficient Slimdrive SC, a curved automatic door operator.
Sustainable properties As with the Pavilions, glass remains a popular choice for entrances of all styles thanks to its aesthetic properties and ability to create a feeling of light and space. However, in its natural form, glass allows heat to escape. As a result, we have seen an increase in demand for automatic doors that have sustainable properties such as low emissivity (Low E) coatings. These not only dramatically reduce heat transfer, but reflect interior heat back into the room. To maximise the efficiency of such coatings they should only be used as part of a double glazed system, so doors and screens will need to be of a framed construction. Low E coatings can be enhanced by the use of argon filled double glazing which buffers against heat loss and gains even more effectively. Where space is limited, revolving doors provide a high degree of insulation against the elements, saving energy and ensuring a pleasant and uniform climate inside the building. This was the case at The Nadler Hotel in Soho, which needed to provide guests with an ‘always open’ entrance, whilst maintaining a pleasant and consistent climate within the building. Our three leaf automatic TSA 325 NT revolving door is activated by a motion detector inside and out, and as well as being energy-efficient, it provides a high degree of protection from the elements and insulation against noise. Two pass doors powered by EMD-F automatic swing door operators have been installed for accessibility. By making energy efficiency a priority during the design stage, it is possible to marry aesthetics with function and sustainability, ensuring that an entrance is fit for purpose, both now and in the future. 8 www.geze.co.uk

Below: At the heart of the Imago Lift & Slide system is AGB Hardware’s Uni-V central locking profile
The lift and slide door is one of the most popular innovations in home improvements over the past few years. For architects, it’s the ideal combination of aesthetics and function. Yet achieving the smooth movement, slimline appearance and reliable performance requires a precisely engineered system, according to experienced Italian hardware manufacturer AGB.
T
he company is the manufacturer of the Imago Lift & Slide system; the innovative sliding door hardware system that combines fluid and silent door movements with a large glazing area that frames the view. Imago has proved popular in the UK since its launch in 2014.With its slimline profile, an Imago door is relatively easy to manufacture but the finished product commands a premium price tag. A key challenge is to ensure that the door system can carry the weight of the glass to enable movement of the door in a safe and controlled manner. That’s where the Imago
22
hardware makes a difference. At the heart of the Imago Lift & Slide system is AGB Hardware’s Uni-V central locking profile. This is engineered to remove any contact between the sash and the frame for seamless openings and closings. Similarly, the construction of the Uni-V profile permits wide working tolerances that maintain the Imago’s exceptional performance long-term, even with the natural deformation of wood. Imago incorporates AGB’s Poseidon advanced lock, while using two opposite facing hooks and a central bolt, as well as a concealed security striker that is installed flush to the frame to complement the slimline design of Imago.
