s the world changes, environmental organisations are pushed to their limits and the nature of their work shifts consequently. This was the case for conservation leader WWF, which found their headquarters was no longer fit for purpose. The organisation therefore embarked on creating its own dream building to spread its message and to showcase its wildlife conservation work to thousands of visitors a year, including industry representatives, designers, architects, students and the public. Turn to page 6 to read how WWF together with construction partner Willmott Dixon made sure The Living Planet Centre was constructed to the highest sustainable standards as part of the overarching goal to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating. Also in this issue, FC&A profiles the striking installation of a stained tulipwood form sculptured around the existing staircase in a converted office building. Home to Chrysalis Records HQ, the development is in an enviable location and now benefits from a stylish glazed entrance to enhance the impact of this eye-catching feature. This artistic family’s objective was to combine the glorious seascape where they live, with a working environment designed to inspire all those who come to share it.

hore Cottage Studio runs short courses for artists who may be starting from scratch or looking to expand their creative practice; the courses are led by practising artists and are inspired by and rooted in nature. From a construction perspective there were a few challenges – the house and studio are cut off by tides twice a day so there’s a lack of access for materials and machinery and the plot is on a strip of clay, rock and sand. This was never going to be a straightforward build. With unrivalled views over the tidal Dee Estuary to North Wales, this is an ever changing, dynamic space with exposure to the elements. The family developed their business plan which would utilise their artistic

talents, created a story board designed to communicate their brief and set about finding the perfect partners to deliver the project. Being highly artistic, business-savvy and enthusiastic, the family were looking for partners who would have similar values surrounding their ambitious project. They found Poynton-based Swift Garden Rooms and sat down with director Martin Lawson and designer Mike Jolley to describe their vision and explore how to make their dream happen. Martin Lawson explains: “We’re always keen to build relationships with our clients first, get under the skin of the project and understand the objectives before we begin to put pencil to paper.” The clients, being typically thorough, already knew what practical boxes had to be ticked and the Swift designers produced innovative ideas that combined such function with flair and met a business-like budget. The building required: • A unique and bespoke design with a stunning appearance

• Huge opening glazed doors to connect with the garden area • Panorama window overlooking the vast shore and seascape • Plumbing for work sinks and dedicated electrical layout for work stations • An environmentally friendly solution that respected the ecology of the plot Experience meant that Swift Garden Rooms knew precisely which partners they’d like to choose to deliver this building which is now creating such a

positive and powerful reaction from all who see it. Swift engaged the skills of architect Matthew Jarman of Maydean Design in Poynton to prepare the planning application and ensure that every angle was explored, so that the building and its construction was planned with empathy for its situation in an area of special scientific interest and beauty.

Structural support Martin Lawson had also worked with Leicester-based Jackpad for a number of years and knew that their innovative environmentally friendly foundations made of 100% recycled and recyclable materials

would be perfect for this sensitive location as there would be no requirement for digging footings and filling them with concrete. As Martin Lawson commented: “Jackpads may be the least sexy element of the build, but without those clever foundations there would have been no building.” These seemingly simple supports have been tested to within an inch of their lives and having passed Building Control’s strictest scrutiny, provide portable foundations for temporary and permanent modular buildings throughout the UK. As Shore Cottage Studio literally is on the shore, access for deliveries of building materials is non-existent, everything had to be transferred to tractor, trailer and 4 x 4s to be brought along the delicate and very bumpy beach, with a weather eye on the tide tables. Planners needed to be sure that strategies were in place to minimise the impact on the beach and wildlife and the local community had to be happy that nothing detrimental would be done to their beautiful environment. The clients, Swift Garden Rooms, Matthew Jarman and Jackpad all recognised that this was going to be an amazing space and after some assessment, it turned out that TV architect and ‘Renovation Man’ George Clarke agreed – the project featured on Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces programme on 21st November 2013. weather, the first day of the build arrived, as did the Channel 4 film crew and torrential rain! There was no denying the fact that the film crew was particularly keen to concentrate upon the delicate moving of thousands of pounds worth of very heavy glass across a windy, rough and inhospitable half mile of beach. The sheer bulk of materials and the massive sections of glazing made this the most demanding day of the whole installation period.

The entire building was completed within 14 days – ahead of schedule, within budget and signed off by the Building Inspectors. Shore Cottage Studio is now a working space for the clients to produce artworks and to host workshops and courses.

These seemingly simple supports provide portable foundations for temporary and permanent modular buildings

system overcame the fall in the ground and was the first element to be installed, then the SIP panels that Swift uses in their construction – these systems are all created offsite, minimising waste. The clients used packaging for their fire and recycled delivery pallets into furniture for the finished studio. The SIP panels are eco friendly, include excellent UV values and structural rigidity and require virtually no extra processing on site. This is a well insulated, very efficient building with trickle vents and extraction just for the laser cutter used in the studio. This was a ‘Swift’ project in more ways than one. The Jackpad foundations were set within three hours, another five hours later, the ring beam had been fabricated, the base of the floor adjusted, the sole plate accurately aligned and fixed and the first wall panels glued, screwed and insulated in place. By day two, all walls were complete, the roof was on, all was stable and ready for windows. Day three saw the 4m wide aluminium doors and 2.5m wide panorama window and the Firestone roofing membrane in place – suddenly this building was connected with its seascape. The fourth day brought first fix for cables and pipes in readiness for plaster boarding and by day six the plasterers had transformed the interior so that the clients were given an indication of the perfection of their own Amazing Space. Once the plaster had dried, the final fit for electrics and plumbing completed, the clients brought their own unique skills to bear inside. The Centre was officially opened last month by one of its ambassadors, Sir David Attenborough before its opening to the general public. Commenting on WWF’s new home, Sir David said: “It’s a fantastic eco-building that shows not only how it’s possible to use our planet’s resources wisely, but also helps us all connect with

3. WWF will generate its own electricity from the sun with carefully positioned solar panels on the roof. This is expected cover up to a fifth of the building’s electricity use. 4. The appliances used will be among the most energy efficient around. WWF will monitor the building’s energy use carefully, and display this data within the building. 5. The building has used recycled materials where it can, and all wood comes from responsibly-managed forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). 6. Shrubs, trees and flowers, and put up boxes have been planted to attract birds and bats. By encouraging biodiversity WWF wants to bring the natural world onto the site. 7. Rainwater and ‘grey water’ from showers and hand basins is used to flush toilets and water plants. 8. In the construction of the building, WWF made sure as little waste as possible was sent to landfill. 9. WWF is always looking for ways to reduce its air travel, and improved video conferencing facilities will really help. 10. The new building can be reached easily by public transport and plenty of sedum-covered bike racks (and showers!) have been provided to encourage staff to cycle.

While refurbishment projects need to work within the constraints of existing fabric and structural dimension. The fit out of any transport hub is a challenge. Design, material choice, durability, the risk of issues on site during installation and programme slippage have huge repercussions for ensuring projects are delivered on time and to budget.This is where using prefabrication can have a significant benefit. Working in live stations poses many complications including limited hours working in a fully operational station as well as the actual location, therefore factory solutions which can be installed quickly and delivered just in time have an advantage in these environments. Site health and safety is improved and usually fewer operatives are required on site. SAS International’s Architectural Metalwork solutions are specified for many stations around the world. A striking example is the bespoke suspended soffit linings and binnacles specified for Blackfriars Station, London. Blackfriars serves as the main terminus between Kent and South London, and is visited by more than 44,000 passengers a day. Many of the materials required for the construction process at Blackfriars were carried on barges on the River Thames to avoid road congestion in this central London location. Balfour Beatty managed the multidisciplined construction team who delivered this unique transport project.This included the coordination of night-time working and traffic management which was necessary for works alongside a busy railway line. Refurbishing existing fabric With refurbishment projects limited ‘As Built’ information will mean architects may have to investigate the existing fabric, propose a solution and start fabrication almost simultaneously. Design and construction work for Waterloo’s refurbishment has been carried out with the potential constraints posed by the late-Edwardian era site and building fabric.

SAS International has worked successfully on three separate phases of Waterloo station’s refurbishment alongside a range of designers and project teams.The most recent phase to be completed was in 2012 where a new balcony level was incorporated to maximise retail space whilst accommodating the growing number of passenger journeys. A very modern aesthetic was chosen for the balcony which still manages to expose the older stone and brick vertical interior facade. By specifying metal cladding, with toughened glass for the balustrades, the BAM design team chose a durable and sympathetic material choice. While at Liverpool Central Station, SAS International worked with the main contractor Morgan Sindall at early design stage of the refurbishment, assisting in selection of materials to replace the original Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) and Melamine cladding installed in the 1970s. Replicating the existing cladding line, whilst using the old sub-grid, posed a challenge at design stage to ensure the new Vitreous Enamel panels were installed correctly.This was overcome by designing notches in the sideflanges with adjustable brackets fixed to the flange to suspend panels.The new panels, with impact resistant and anti-drumming backings, were designed to keep weight to a minimum, so as not to impose excessive loads on the existing sub-grid.The overall thickness in many cases could not exceed the original Melamine size to coordinate with the existing escalators and avoid any reduction in floor area.The Liverpool Underground Stations refurbishment project has been undertaken by construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall on behalf of Network Rail.

Brickwork as a material was chosen to embody a sense of timelessness, tradition and practicality

A new monastery in Liverpool has won this year’s Architect’s Choice Award at the annual Brick Awards which took place on 14th November at the Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel in London.

mpressed by its grace and elegance, over 100 registered architects and architectural students voted for the Carmelite Monastery, which was built for the Carmelite Sisters and completed in March 2013. Designed by architects Austin – Smith: Lord and built by brickwork contractor Nobles Construction, the monastery embodies the daily cycle of prayer, manual labour, communal mealtimes and private reflection whilst being a comfortable and modest home. Silence and light articulates the architecture which is calm, ordered and uplifting. Although modern in its expression, the architecture acknowledges the tradition of monastic design in its form and layout. Monasteries have always been sustainable communities and this building is no exception. Designed to minimise its energy requirements the building incorporates natural ventilation, improved insulation, maximised daylight and renewables such as ground source heat pump and solar water

heating. Brickwork as a material was chosen to embody a sense of timelessness, tradition and practicality. Flemish bond was used as the background weave that can be modified by projecting and recessing the headers to add texture and pattern. Thus the headers are projected on the curved facade of the chapel, creating a rich texture that together with the curved form expresses the modest chapel as the most important building in the community. On the third storey the headers have been recessed to define the datum set at the top of the second storey that acts as a horizontal line tying the composition together. The colour and texture of Wienerberger’s Con Mosso facing brick is soft and rich and equally suitable for internal and external use. The brickwork has been used internally most notably in the chapel and the cloister adding texture and robustness to these spaces.

Home utilities with communication capabilities increase security and comfort, reduce energy consumption and provide technical assistance to the elderly. Here Armin Anders, Vice President Business Development, EnOcean GmbH discusses how energy harvesting wireless technology can flexibly network intelligent homes.

WiFi has proven to be invaluable for transferring large amounts of data from multimedia devices

he smart home is no longer a thing of fiction but an accepted fact among the general public, as proven by recent figures. By 2017, smart homes in Germany are expected to increase to more than 20%, which is equivalent to more than eight million households within the next five years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a potential billion euro market in Germany alone. The results of a survey on the attractiveness of smart homes to customers support these statements: more than 65% of 500 respondents found the services attractive or even very attractive. The addressable market is therefore over 20 million households in Germany alone. At the heart of a smart home is automation for a residential building, in which the individual components, gadgets, wall switches, sensors and relay receivers,

are networked to form an intelligent system. As a result, the building systems (lighting, heating and shading), security technology and other home devices can be controlled automatically as well as visualised and changed from a multimedia device. The networking of individual components and a central control makes the home more comfortable and also more secure, while saving energy at the same time.

Wireless innovation The central control logic is to be found either in the cloud, or, as a safer option, in a separate device in the house. Decentralised intelligence makes it possible to use local emergency functions, like turning the lights on or off, during a system failure. Residents can run the different applications from mobile devices such as smart phones or

tablets. Classic controls such as light switches and hand-held transmitters are also available to the user, if their smartphone is left in the car, for example. Modern smart home solutions use wireless technologies.Wireless solutions address existing buildings, which outnumber new ones, thanks to easy retrofitting and, therefore, provide clear advantages against classic wired systems.Two principally different wireless technologies are needed: on the one hand,WiFi has proven to be invaluable for transferring large amounts of data from multimedia devices.WiFi uses a lot of energy though, and can only be used by permanently powered or daily recharged gadgets. On the other hand, transferring data, such as measurements or conditions, from sensors, wirelessly installed in windows, furniture or walls, as well as from integrated valves and ventilation flaps, preferably requires energy saving wireless radio. The energy harvesting wireless technology from EnOcean has been optimised for these ultra-low-power data transfers. Instead of batteries, miniature solar cells, mechanical motion converters and thermal converters provide the necessary energy. Changing the batteries, maintenance work usually required during the most unfitting of circumstances, is no longer needed, as the technology is energy-autonomous.The technology can also be easily connected to all systems that communicate over WiFi, as well as over Ethernet/IP, KNX, BACnet or LON via gateways. Based on the energy harvesting wireless technology, a wide range of energy-

Integrating applications Data security and reliability play a big role in the smart home. EnOcean radio already offers the basics for a reliable two-way communication in home automation and uses secure frequency bands. For a higher level of data security, an encryption mechanism can be used. The data packages are encrypted with an AES-Algorithm with 128 bit-keys. Furthermore, every telegram comes with its own rolling code. A forever

changing authentication code is generated, based on the rolling code and the AES encrypted data package, and then validated by the receiving system. The same proven mechanism also takes place by locking or unlocking a car with a wireless key. For even higher requirement of data security, application-specific encryption mechanisms can be integrated too. The present trend for smart home solutions is developing into the direction of improved design as well as the application areas security, comfort and saving energy. Security and comfort are seen as bare necessities for the user, the advantages are obvious. The HVAC discipline (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) has an enormous potential for saving energy. After all, the heating system accounts for more than 70% of the delivered energy consumed

to install, and they require no maintenance. They eliminate the burdensome need to change batteries once a year. In further optimised systems, the heating boilers are also integrated into the batteryless wireless communication system. As a result, the boiler can directly communicate with the heating valve, or users can control not only the individual radiators but also the entire heating system from a smart phone, based on real-time data.

The valves determine the temperature itself. An optional room temperature sensor can also provide more precise measured values wirelessly. Unlike classic radiator valves, daily and weekly timedependent as well as presence-dependent profiles can be generated for the valve. Residents have different options for setting a desired temperature: by using either an app on the smart phone or a stationary control in the building. They can also adapt the valve in the usual way. Enormous progress is being made in this part of the networked home, thanks to energy harvesting wireless technology â&#x20AC;&#x201C; new heating valves use the difference in temperature between the heating system and the environment to provide energy for changes in stroke as well as for communication. DCLG has not set out a replacement mechanism to drive sustainability in the future. The Committee recommended that DCLG: • Examines the latest research on the decreasing cost of clean energy technologies • Maintains and refreshes the CSH as a tool for local authorities to lever in sustainability

Sustaining the housing standard The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has been urged by MPs to reconsider plans to axe the Sustainable Homes policy that has driven up home building standards and helped to create a thriving sustainable building industry in the UK.

nvironmental Audit Committee Chair Joan Walley MP said: “The Secretary of State should think again before demolishing the Code for Sustainable Homes.The policy has been a big success in driving up home building standards, delivering local choice and supporting green exports. Building materials manufacturers in the UK told us that they use the Code as a green kitemark when they sell their products abroad.” The cross-party Environmental Audit Committee criticised the Department for its decision to remove local authorities’ discretion to set high standards on energy and water saving – using the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) – in favour of a lowest-common-denominator national standard. Joan Walley MP pointed out: “The Coalition Agreement promised that the Government would ‘return decisionmaking powers on housing and planning to

local councils’, but this decision bulldozes local choice in favour of a one-size-fits-all approach designed to benefit developers who want to build homes on the cheap.” DCLG’s proposed needs test on the application of sustainability standards by local authorities also risks becoming a lawyers’ charter, according to the MPs. It could curtail local choice, delay the construction of new homes and compel local authorities to incur unnecessary legal fees. The inquiry found that DCLG failed to take into account the latest evidence on the declining capital costs of fitting clean energy technology to homes in its Housing Standards Review.The MPs also discovered that the 2016 zero carbon homes standard has been successively watered down. The report pointed out that the CSH is a proven policy mechanism for driving incremental improvements in sustainable home building. Once-difficult-to-achieve lower-level CSH standards on energy use

Smart energy and water saving measures – which will ultimately save homeowners money on their bills – must become the norm if we want our homes to be fit for the future. “The Code for Sustainable Homes incentivises developers and designers to think about sustainability from the outset of a project and throughout the development process. It is a proven and flexible way of pushing up home building standards and should not be dropped.”

A sculptural timber form is the most striking thing that visitors see when they enter the reception of a converted warehouse building in North Kensington, west London. The structure houses the offices’ reception desk, providing the reception team with a presence that many would envy. The architect was not responsible for turning the building into offices. That had already been done, and those offices housed the headquarters of Chrysalis Records, which had been at the forefront of the 1980s New Romantics movement in the UK, publishing bands including Spandau Ballet and Ultravox. Since then it had changed hands several times. The client wanted to make the most of the building. It decanted Chrysalis to the upper floors, and Stiff + Trevillion designed a new reception space by roofing over an existing courtyard. This both gave the building a more imposing entrance, and provided an area that could be used for informal meetings. The architect went for a simple industrial aesthetic, with a glazed entrance. It has exposed the underside of the new metal deck roof, installing glazing around the perimeter at the junction with the existing buildings, to bring in light. The floor is of polished concrete. This ‘industrial luxe’ feeling was however in danger of being compromised by the presence of what Andrew Trevillion, director at Stiff + Trevillion, described as a ‘clunky 1980s’ staircase in the middle of the space. Since there was not

Design & Desire enough money to replace it, the architect decided instead to disguise it – not in a way that tried to make it recede into the background, but by celebrating and transforming it.

And one of the over-riding factors, Trevillion said, was that “it takes a good edge.You can get a sharp arris on it”. This was vital since those edges play such an important role in the success of the sculptural conceit.

With a restricted budget and a relatively large amount of timber, the other attraction of tulipwood was that it is one of the more affordable hardwood species, thanks to the abundance with which it grows sustainably in the United States. Because the different elements had to be fixed – they were pinned – in a specified order, according to Trevillion “the contractor thought it was rather complicated at first. But once we explained, they realised that the job was quite straightforward.” The angling of the battens provides a range of surfaces on which sounds can be absorbed or bounced around, softening what would otherwise be a very reverberant acoustic in the space. It is made up of four horizontal layers, each set at an angle to the one below with the horizontal surfaces generated between the layers used to accommodate uplighting and downlighting. The lowest layer is carved down to an appropriate height to accommodate the reception desk with, in this case, the horizontal element forming the surface of the desk. By making the ‘sculpture’ work so hard, there is an essential simplicity to balance the complexity of the form, doing away with any extraneous elements. The carcase is of softwood, with a painted wooden board attached, to which are fixed American tulipwood battens, each measuring 20 by 30cm. The edges of the battens have been cut at angles, with three or four variations which give the lively, irregular almost rippling effect that is so attractive. “At first we just specified that we wanted a hardwood,” Trevillion explained, but when he investigated further he found that tulipwood was ideal for his purposes. Although he was aware of the material, he had never used it before but he would, he said, use it again. Although relatively light in weight and soft, American tulipwood has excellent mechanical properties and has a very high strength to weight ratio making it ideal for

reminiscent of the interior of some concert halls, but there is an important difference. Acoustic design for performance spaces is a specialist subject, calling for the use of highly skilled consultants, since it is vital that, as near as possible, every member of the audience should hear the music in ideal conditions. In a social space like the reception at the Phoenix Brewery, it is simply important that the sound experience is pleasant, and that people can talk with a degree of intimacy. The acoustic design does not therefore call for complex calculations. Instead an architect’s instinct and understanding of materials is sufficient. And that is what happened here. Trevillion did not know exactly the impact that the timber form would have on the acoustic of the space, but he knew that it would improve it. And this proved the case. “If we had not done this, the space would have been impossible to sit in,” Trevillion said. Instead it is welcoming and attractive, with some carefully chosen furniture. It fulfils the role that the client was looking for thanks, in large part, to the tulipwood enclosure that the architect designed. American tulipwood (Liriodendron tulipifera) American tulipwood has a creamy white sapwood which may be streaked. The heartwood varies from pale yellowish brown to olive green. This green colour tends to darken on exposure to UV light and turn brown. The wood has a medium to fine texture and is straight grained.

Planning for the future Following the severe flooding that parts of the UK experienced in 2012, it is becoming increasingly clear that the most effective course of action would be to prioritise planning for how to manage these situations in advance. Here, Terry Sloman, Regional Sales Support Manager, Burdens Utilities, discusses stormwater management and how to prepare for extreme weather by future-proofing properties and developments.

he subject of stormwater management is fast becoming one of the UK’s primary concerns in the area of environmental issues we need to be prepared for. According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), more than five million properties in the UK are at risk of flooding, which equates to one in every six homes in the UK.

With the government announcing that it is taking measures to better protect more than 64,000 more homes through 93 new flood defences, the £294m scheme has been criticised for favouring the ‘big cities’ rather than rural areas that were significantly hit by high levels of flooding in winter 2012. Since rain records began in 1766, the amount of rainfall has continued to increase in the UK. It is estimated that flood damage

The importance of considering surface water risk has become enshrined in a development’s planning stages

costs the UK more than £1 billion. High volumes of stormwater run-off place increased stress on existing drainage systems and urban watercourses. When a previously undeveloped site is built on and paved over, stormwater run-off from the newly impermeable surface increases by up to 80%, which places greater pressure on existing watercourses and drainage infrastructure. The traditional means of dealing with increased stormwater is just not viable anymore. As we move forward, we need to acknowledge the challenges that stormwater presents, but then consider how we can future-proof new and existing developments to cope with these growing pressures. Ever since the Pitt Review in 2007, the importance of considering surface water risk has become enshrined in a development’s planning stages. However, to improve our ability to withstand the levels of flooding witnessed in recent years, section three of the Pitt Review, entitled ‘Reducing the risk of flooding and its impact’, should still be the top priority. The latest Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) have been developed to cope with the demands that heavy rainfall can place on an area. Indeed, integrated systems incorporating attenuation tanks, large capacity drainage channels, lagoons or ponds, porous paving and rainwater harvesting are now an essential part of any new development. The solutions available include stormwater infiltration modular cells, large diameter pipework, separation tanks and flow control regulators. In order to achieve smarter stormwater management, a collaborative relationship between all stakeholders is required. This will lead to long-term benefits: enhanced public spaces, greater biodiversity and increased land value. It is our responsibility to take action for delivering a more effective stormwater management strategy in the UK today, to improve our quality of life in the future.

Gareth Moriarty Owen of Dewis Architecture said: “The site is subject to extremes of weather so longevity of material specification was of paramount importance. But we also specified Welsh Slate because of the quality of the material, its environmental benefits, the specialist knowledge and advice, and its close proximity to site. “It was specified for the roof material as it was the most durable and suited material for the roof concept which was random diminishing courses chosen to reflect the striations and layers of the surrounding mountain ranges. “It also satisfied local planning authority stipulation on the use of slate products that said slate roofs are to have slate of uniform colour and texture consistent with natural local Welsh slate. I personally would not specify alternatively sourced roofing slates from any other location, China or Spain, as they are vastly inferior, do not have the same weathering characteristics, and are from different veins or build-ups of slate deposits. “The wall and floor materials were chosen for their numerous benefits – the external cladding was sourced from slate tips following site visits to hand-

ome 320m² of bespoke sizes of Welsh Slate’s Heather Blue roofing tiles from the company’s Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda were selected by Anglesey-based Dewis Architecture for the roof of the new BREEAM “Excellent” Ogwen Valley visitors centre in the Cwm Idwal area of the National Park. These were complemented by 140m² of Heather Blue floor tiles throughout the building, 80m² of cladding to external and internal walls from the Cwt Y Bugail quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog, and 30m² of traditional “crawiau” slate slab finish to external boundary walls. In addition, 500m² or 100 tonnes of hardstandings from glacial boulders were sawn to form slabs to a thickness of 80mm (and flame textured for improved slip

resistance) at the quarry five miles away. Firstly, it’s a flagship building that’s right on our doorstep that makes full use of a wide variety of our product portfolio from two of our quarries. “Also, Emyr said the new building had to be sustainable which Welsh Slate certainly is, as it is a completely natural product that can be re-used at the end of its shelf life. This can be up to hundreds of years for some roofing slates so that shows just how fit for purpose quality Welsh Slate is. And given the fact Welsh Slate has been

The £600,000 centre was funded by the CAN strategic project (Communities and Nature) through Natural Resources Wales and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.

Also, slate’s sustainability was of high importance due to the BREEAM requirements. “The Welsh Slate products complied with the aesthetic and performance requirements of the project excellently, fulfilling them in every way possible. They interface beautifully with the other natural and man-made finishes which is a testament to its natural value and flexibility. “The Welsh Slate elements afforded the building the opportunity to reflect natural elements such as the buttressing seen on the nearby mountain, Tryfan, and the angular synclines visible from Cwm Idwal, formed by glacial erosion during the last Ice Age.

It’s not often that bricks are the centrepiece of an acclaimed exhibition, however, Northcot bricks were on prominent display as part of the inaugural exhibition at the new Serpentine Sackler Gallery in Kensington Gardens, London.

he ambitious project involved the restoration and conversion of a classical 19th century brick gunpowder store, known as ‘The Magazine’, and the creation of a light and transparent extension designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, which complements the neo-classical architecture of the original building. This is Zaha Hadid Architects’ first permanent structure in central London. The Grade II* listed building was originally designed in 1805 to store munitions during the Napoleonic wars. It comprises two raw brick barrel vaulted spaces (where the gunpowder was stored) and a lower square shaped surrounding structure with a frontal colonnade. The building was in military use until 1963 and, since then, has been used by The Royal Parks to store flagpoles from The Mall. Having been brought into public use for

the first time in its 208-year history as a prestigious gallery space, its opening was marked by a site-specific exhibition by the young Argentinian artist Adrián Villar Rojas, who has gained international renown for his dramatic large-scale sculptural works, predominantly made in clay and brick. In this, his first UK exhibition Today We Reboot The Planet, Villar Rojas presented a potent mix of myth and imagination, with a number of fantastical clay sculptures, including a dramatic life sized elephant, which appeared to push against the gallery wall. Independent English manufacturer, Northcot Brick supplied 45,000 wirecut bricks from its popular Multi Red Rustic range, to cover the entire interior floor of the Gallery. In this installation, the artist re-imagined the architecture and original purpose of the historic ammunitions store and responded to the original brick vaulted Powder Rooms that sit at the centre of the building.

Reverting to tradition Chosen predominantly for their form and character, the loose-laid bricks added warmth of tone and variation of texture, as well as making an engaging ‘tinkling’ sound as they were walked upon. Adrián Villar Rojas draws much of his inspiration from the rawness and immediacy of traditional handmade brickmaking, which takes place on the brick farm in his hometown of Rosario in Argentina. This return to an old and traditional practice – similar to that of returning to clay as material and sculpture as a form – was the artist’s path for inventing a symbolic world that speaks to the imagination. Northcot Brick is a traditional English manufacturer, known primarily for its characterful handmade bricks, which are also made using bench mould techniques that have hardly changed over the centuries, and which are fired in the timehonoured way in one of the last remaining coal fired kilns in the UK. Michael Brown, Managing Director of Northcot Brick Ltd said: “We are delighted to have been involved in such a prestigious project. As a company, Northcot is passionate about making traditional characterful bricks, which have aesthetic value and appeal. As such, we feel a natural synergy with the work of Adrián Villar Rojas, whose exhibition we were keen to support.”

As well as allowing in light to fill the space, it creates a new open, flexible working area ideal for encouraging social interaction and creative thinking. Visitors to the agency are directed to the central studio on arrival and architects and designers, Urban Salon, wanted to give the area a warm, welcoming feel. To help achieve this, they specified the use of natural materials. Heradesign Superfine acoustic Fins from Knauf AMF, fitted the brief perfectly and were installed under the existing barrel vaulted roof. The vertically suspended Fins were formed using 25mm thick mineral wool panels wrapped around a solid timber board on both sides. The characteristic natural texture of wood wool lends itself perfectly to the design

theme as Urban Salon Director, Alex Mowat explained: “We designed specially formed V-shaped Fins produced in a custom-made light-grey colour on one side and standard white on the other to complement the natural colours of the bamboo and textiles used elsewhere in the central studio. The Fins provide solar shading and at the same time allow daylight to pass through the original glass roof. Along with the other acoustic materials, the Fins help reduce reverberation times in the large open space where 400 people work together.”

Suspended statement The Fins were suspended in the roof space of the central studio and are affixed to steel RSJs. Frost Interiors installed the Fins and Managing Director, Stephen Frost, explained how they developed the design of the Fins with help from Knauf AMF’s

technical team. “We worked successfully with Knauf AMF to turn the design of the Fins into a reality, making them lightweight and easy to install. We used solid machined sections of timber mechanically fixed to the upper face of the top flange and lower face of the bottom flange to provide fixing points for the Heradesign panels. An additional section of timber was introduced at the base of the Fins to hold the material in the triangular position.” The Heradesign panels are available in various sizes, face patterns, edge details with an unlimited range of colours including RAL, NCS or StoColor offering architects a unique product to create truly original interiors. The Heradesign Fins create a bold architectural statement which are perfect for a modern space and are practical. They are ideal for areas where a suspended ceiling is not viable but acoustic control is necessary. The Fins provide excellent sound absorption in what would otherwise be a hard, reverberant space. *

Witherford Watson Mann specified Kerakoll adhesive and grout for the tiling in the renovation of Stirling Prize winning Astley Castle, because of the company’s reputation for high quality environmentally friendly products. H40 Eco Tenaflex Grey was used as the adhesive for both walls and floors. It is fully stable even in the presence of water which could have been a problem as there are places where the tiling touches the original castle walls which are still in the process of drying out.The grout used was Fugabella Eco 2 – 12 which is a low absorption water repellent grout. UZIN products were used to install 600m2 of new safety flooring following a refurbishment of Wigan Youth Zone – a centre which aims to help young people develop achievable aspirations. Contractor iFloor UK turned to UZIN because minimising risk was essential on such a prestigious project which involved installing an intricate flooring design at the heart of the building. Firstly UZIN PE 280, a rapid primer was applied to the floor before UZIN NC 160, a heavy duty levelling compound was installed. UZIN KE 66, a fibre reinforced adhesive was then used to install the safety floorcovering.The subsequent finish was outstanding. *

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing Bristol Blue glass for highlighting the performance ring. The SuDS compliant permeable paving system was laid by Ronacrete Approved Contractor Avalon Surfacing Ltd. The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing System was supplied in two components which were mixed together with a drill and paddle before being added to the aggregate blend. The aggregate and resin were then mixed in a high capacity forced action mixer. The mixed material was poured onto the substrate, spread to level and trowel finished at a thickness of 15mm. After completion the paving was ready for foot traffic within four hours and ready for vehicles after 1-2 days. Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing satisfies SuDS requirements, allowing rainwater to quickly and easily drain through the porous surface. All blends have been tested for slip resistance in wet and dry conditions; test results show the risk of slip to be low. RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing is a UV stable resin bound aggregate surfacing; its functional properties and decorative appearance make it an attractive choice for a wide range of paving applications. Further benefits include: 15 year product warranty from an approved contractor; range of natural aggregate blends offering a choice of colours and shades; highly porous allowing free drainage of rainwater (SuDS compliant); UV stable resin prevents yellowing, maintaining the appearance of the surfacing; and recycled aggregates available. *

Harmer SML provides waste solution for landmark project The Harmer SML lightweight cast iron soil and waste system from Alumasc has provided a robust drainage solution at one of London’s most recent landmark projects. Neo Bankside is a multi-award winning development located next to Tate Modern on the cultural South Bank of the River Thames. It comprises four hexagonal towers housing 217 residential apartments, a business centre, leisure club and private landscaped gardens. Designed by architects Rogers Stirk

Harbour & Partners and consulting design engineers Hoare Lee Consultants, this large scale project demanded a reliable, cast iron soil and waste solution that would deliver high levels of efficiency. Following close involvement from Alumasc working alongside Hoare Lee, the Harmer SML system was specified for use in the buildings’

soil & waste and rainwater stacks and was installed by M&E contractor Interserve Engineering Services. The Harmer SML range has recently undergone a number of developments, which now present contractors and specifiers with a superb package of design and installation benefits. In addition, advances in cast iron technology have ensured that Harmer SML products are fully attuned to modern construction needs. The system is durable, recyclable, quick and easy to install and requires low maintenance. Engineers and designers also have the reassurance that the new Harmer SML range meets the new UK requirement for CE Marking, while installers can further benefit from the introduction of new ductile iron brackets. These brackets can be used for vertical and horizontal rainwater stacks without the need for pipe stack supports – saving costs for both the contractor and end user. A new case study from the trade association Interpave discusses how master-planning, urban design, hard landscape and external surfaces have been integrated with sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) – featuring concrete block permeable paving – on a major, phased development in Oxfordshire. Positive air entry Introducing or upgrading the ventilation of an existing roof is commonly an obligatory undertaking when the thermal insulation within the roof space is increased. To provide air entry and exit opportunities ventilation apertures are introduced through the soffit on opposing sides of the property. Once ventilation apertures have been established, air can flow into and out of the roof space (as long as the insulation laid within it is restrained from blocking the flow route where the converging roof timbers approach plate level). After the soffit apertures have been drilled to provide 70mm holes, the installer may choose whether the Type

CSV Circular Soffit Ventilators are fitted in a ‘see’ or ‘no see’ manner. Type CSV ventilators have a deflecting louvered face, providing positive air entry and insect screening. Unlike standard grille ventilators, rotating the Type CSV so the louvers slope downwards towards the property masonry face results in the ventilation openings being almost hidden from view, when viewed from the ground. The soffit can maintain a continuous unbroken appearance. Alternatively, fitted with the louvers facing the opposite direction – outwardly – provides a punctuated soffit appearance. The installer has a choice. The Type CSV is available in various colours and has one of the highest airflow ratings of 2100 mm², which means fewer need be installed to provide the required performance level.

Monodraught donates to charity build project In September, natural ventilation, daylighting and cooling specialist Monodraught supplied and installed free-ofcharge a number of its natural ventilation and natural daylighting systems to ‘The Little Miracles’ Project as part of BBC’s charity Children in Need, DIY SOS: The Big Build. ‘Little Miracles’ is a Peterborough-based, parent-led centre support group and charity for children with additional needs, disabilities and life-limiting conditions. Set up by Michelle King in 2010 after she was refused access on public transport because of her son Oliver’s medical equipment; Little Miracles now helps 700 families and has over 2500 children registered to use the centre. Built in Peterborough in just ten days in September, the Little Miracles site was erected on a gifted 2½ acre site, which includes an old, run down concrete prefab. While the new site is bigger than the Charity’s previous property, its existing building was not fit for purpose and had the

potential to cause significant problems to many of the families who desperately rely on the help given by Little Miracles. There were no disabled toilets, access ramps or changing facilities, and the existing climbing structures were unsafe and condemned. The building contained asbestos, was not secure and had none of the sensory equipment so many of the children depend upon. Monodraught’s contribution was to supply and install three WINDCATCHER X-Air 140 natural ventilation systems complete with an iNVent fully-automatic control system, to provide natural ventilation to the main hall. In addition, nine 300mm diameter SUNPIPE natural daylight systems were supplied and

Eircom gets a facelift from Remmers The Eircom exchange building, constructed in the 1970s, consists of a rendered exterior of architectural interest and features curves and round porthole style windows.The exterior render was suffering with a high degree of cracking.
