ousebuilding was once again the focus of attention in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement and Spending Review, emphasising the need to prioritise the provision of affordable housing. In previous Statements announcing measures for housebuilding, the industry has responded with skepticism.Yet it seems the majority of the sector is at last satisfied with the new housing programme unveiled last month. Whilst a blueprint for 400,000 homes has been unveiled, there is no doubt the test will be on the execution of delivery and standard of these new homes. RIBA President Jane Duncan praised the announcement, yet appealed for a high standard of homes: “The Chancellor’s focus on housebuilding is welcome. But urgent action is needed to ensure all homes are well-designed, sustainable places people want to live, making ‘rabbit hutch’ houses a thing of the past.”

C I N G

As we look toward the arrival of these new homes, newly completed housing schemes are helping to set the benchmark for design, sustainability and affordability. On page 13, FC&A profiles a stunning example of a residential development committed to improving the residents’ quality of life through passivhaus design.

FC&A rounds up the industry news

In Brief Morgan Sindall tops out Grade II listed building Construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall plc has held a topping out ceremony to celebrate a key milestone in the construction of a £2.9m project to develop new office space and refurbish a 17th century building in the heart of Norwich’s historic Cathedral Close district. The new three-storey office building is being constructed for Bussey & Sabberton Bros and sits alongside the Grade II listed St Martin’s building on Bedding Lane.

Art in architecture Art and architecture have always been intrinsically linked. Art has often reflected the changing landscape of cities and

urban spaces, with classical and modern pieces of architecture regularly deemed ‘works of art’ in their own right.

Center Parcs submits plan

Center Parcs has submitted a planning application for a €233m holiday village in Ireland. Situated in County Longford in the Irish Midlands the application has been prepared by the team responsible for Woburn Forest, Center Parcs’ most recent village; Edmond Shipway, NTR Planning, Holder Mathias, Jackson Design, Larnaca and Peter Brett Associates together with their Irish partners ORS and EIS.

Launderette-tohome conversions won’t solve crisis

A new housing bill will allow developers to convert laundrettes to homes without planning permission. Liverpool, Manchester and Hackney in East London are amongst the country’s Hotpoint hotspots, according to official data. Housing Minister Brandon Lewis announced changes to permitted development rights (PDR) as part of a housing and planning bill. The PDR changes are designed to encourage thousands of new homes to be built. With washing machine ownership reaching saturation point, demand for launderettes has fallen.

Housing developer Peabody has recently launched two central London developments that have incorporated high quality contemporary living space with exciting and engaging artwork, unique to each development. Both More West in W10 and St John’s Way in SW11 are perfect examples of a successful balance between aesthetics, culture, history and practicality. These two schemes have both utilised the local history and heritage of their respective areas in creating art installations that will be on permanent display to residents, locals and passers-by. More West is located in the heart of one of London’s best arts and culture scenes near Notting Hill and Portobello Road. Contemporary British artist Nathan Coley was chosen from a shortlist of accomplished artists by Peabody and architects Haworth Tompkins to design and install a piece of public art central to the development’s overall look and feel. Originally drawn to the project because of ‘Peabody’s strong history’, Turner Prize

nominee Coley formed his final idea, a 7m high abstract apple tree sculpture gilded with 24 carat gold leaf, after comprehensive research into the local area. The sculpture, situated on the development rooftop, reflects the intriguing history of a small community that lived on the site in the 1970s. Known as the Free Independent Republic of Frestonia, each member of the local group of residents changed their surname to ‘Bramley’ taking inspiration from a local street name Bramley Road. Coley’s research and subsequent unearthing of the Frestonian’s history inspired his ‘Bramley apple’ sculpture that was “….a light bulb moment,” Coley comments. Visible from Latimer Road Underground station, Coley’s apple tree plays an important

new part in the local landscape, its presence echoing the site’s history, brings a sense of pride to the development and a permanent art fixture in the area. Equally inspiring but with a very different approach, St John’s Way situated near Clapham Junction, features installation artwork in its structural brickwork, created by artist Rodney Harris. Harris’ integrated artworks include; services uniforms, pinafores, tools and a Butler’s sink which will be installed with further sculptures across the remaining phases of the development. Each location for the artworks has been chosen to, “…provide varying natural light… how it changes

over a day will vary the clarity of each artwork,” states Harris. Iain Cochran of architects Hawkins Brown further adds, “Involving an artist on architectural schemes can bring many benefits to a project including a strong, unique identity and an opportunity for the building users to inhabit an environment in a subtle and personal way.” Each sculpture has been placed at a specific location around the development designed to increase legibility, identity and serve as navigational markers ‘creating a sculptural trail’. www.morewest.co.uk www.stjohnswaysw11.co.uk

The business plan for the park was designed to support its sustainable long-term development

historic buildings and courtyard gardens. Artists’ studios, small creative business units, a backstage arts training facility and residential accommodation would follow. The business plan for the park was designed to support its sustainable long-term development. The Park project involved extensive consultation and complex funding arrangements and was funded and supported by the Arts Council of England, EEDA (East of England Development Agency), CCS (Creative and Cultural Skills), SFA (Skills Funding Agency) and Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation. The NHA masterplan created a new square as a focus for the main buildings. The square is linked by a gentle ramp to the old farmhouse buildings. All buildings

icholas Hare Architects (NHA) were commissioned by Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation to develop a masterplan for a 14-acre derelict farmhouse site close to the Dartford crossing on the Thames. The project was born out of necessity – with a sense of purpose and urgency – as the London 2012 Olympics required the Royal Opera House (ROH) to move its scenery workshop from Bow and find a new permanent home. Rather than move to a nondescript shed on an industrial park, the ROH and Thurrock developed a vision for a creative arts production park that would be anchored by two ROH buildings and visitor facilities housed within 10 grade II listed

on the site would have to be designed to a very high environmental design standard to achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ ratings. Attracting visitors and students (of all ages) and developing strong ties with local residents were a key aspect of the brief. The first aspects to be completed were the landscape and public playground to form an infrastructure that could facilitate change and development. The historic buildings and courtyard gardens were carefully restored, primarily for community use. The project won the Regeneration category in the RICS East of England Awards in 2011.

The first buildings The first new building on the Park was the Bob and Tamar Manoukian Production Workshop for the ROH, designed by NHA. The building has proved a resounding success, both in terms of its primary creative and technical purpose, and in terms of education and public interest. “The workshop has exceeded all our expectations as a work place and is the envy of other Opera Houses around the world,” comments David Pritchard, Head of Production, ROH. The ROH arrange weekly tours of the Production workshop which are regularly booked out. They also hold open-air screenings in the courtyard garden of live events from Covent Garden and hold

Other building projects have followed, which have helped to establish the critical mass of creative activity on the Park. They include the new Backstage Centre – a national skills centre for the backstage arts – and artists’ studios and live-work units, all of which are fully let.

The ROH Bob & Tamar Manoukian Costume Centre The new Costume Centre was opened by Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Greg Clark MP in October. It was commissioned by Thurrock Council and funded through a grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in partnership with the Royal Opera House, South Essex College, Thurrock Council, Bob and Tamar Manoukian and the Foyle Foundation. It is the second ROH building on the site designed by Nicholas Hare Architects. The Centre brings together a number of specific spaces for distinct functions:

Workshops The ROH workshops provide ideal conditions for making and repairing costumes. “The workroom is such a fantastic space for making costumes, being so large, warm and bright – the light really is perfect for detailed work,” comments Fay Fullerton, Head of Costume, ROH. In addition, in a unique partnership with South Essex College and University of the

Arts London, the ROH has established a new BA degree course in Costume Construction, based in the first-floor workshop in the new building. The ROH Collections A special part of the building provides secure storage for the ROH’s precious collections. These include costumes worn by famous artists, furniture, props, artwork on historic musical instruments. This part of the building is sealed against moths and has temperature and humidity control.

High standards These various spaces are housed in an innovative structure of steel and cross-

laminated timber, which exploits the different properties of each material. The rectangular structure is clad in blackpainted timber. This material echoes the appearance of the old farm buildings and complements the grey-weathered timber cladding of the Production Workshop. Standing between the Production Workshop and the Skills Academy, the Costume Centre completes the third side of the Park’s central square. Like the Production Workshop, it has been designed and built to the highest environmental standards, achieving a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard.

Storage A purpose-designed warehouse will house more than 20,000 costumes for ROH productions currently in the repertory, together with dedicated spaces for shoes, hats and wigs.

By effective use of the roof’s shape and design, the house can deliver a comfortable temperature

Passivhaus scheme takes shape Ibstock has recently worked with Stride Treglown architects to help realise a ‘wraparound’ vision and seamless finish for a striking development of high-end eco homes. designed to both meet and exceed the brief. This ‘wraparound’ roof would enclose highly glazed south-facing rear elevations – that would take full advantage of solar-gain and collect the heat from the sun. The effect on the house would be wide-reaching. In practical terms, warmth would be trapped helping reduce energy consumption. While aesthetically, the roofs would form a striking focal point for the development, producing the effect of origami standing on end. As an integral part of the design, the product selected for the roof would have to serve a unique purpose of blending seamlessly into the Tilebrick wall and assisting delivery of the sustainable targets of the architect. Ibstock’s Tilebrick in Slate Blue, was chosen and coupled with grey roof tiles.

orm, shape, building orientation and innovative products played a key role in the next step of an evolving line of passive solar design projects by architect, Stride Treglown. When tasked with the project to build a series of high end homes in North Bristol, the architect saw this as an ideal site for next generation passive solar design homes. As well as requiring for homes which were bright, healthy and attractive, the brief also stated that the houses should have a strong connection with the garden to create a fluid inside and outside open plan, conveying a ‘Clean Living’ feel. Using the principles of passivhaus designs and learnings from previous projects, it was decided that a ‘wraparound’ roof, which linked seamlessly from floor to ceiling, was

The illusion was achieved. Both roof and walls appear to be made from one continuous material in a bold ‘wraparound’ sculptural design. Tilebricks and roof tiles work together to merge roof with external facade, blurring the distinction between the building and surrounding areas and reinforcing the architect’s vision of a continuous form. Andrew Halstead-Smith, Group Marketing Manager at Ibstock, comments: “This bold and distinctive project is a prime example of how brick can be used to bring any architectural vision to life. The Tilebrick range provides architects with design solutions that give a new dimension to facades, enhancing the design elements of a building whilst retaining the benefits of structural masonry.” The recently extended Tilebrick range offers an innovative tile-shaped front face brick which replicates a tile-hung wall

the foot of the building to the roof also ensures heat is distributed throughout the property. At the top of this triple space is a remotely controllable roof light. This allows warm air to escape as it rises in warm conditions via passive-stack principles and ensures retention of heat in cooler temperatures. Robert Delius, Senior Associate Architect at Stride Treglown, says: “In previous projects we used sunspaces and double height spaces to contribute to the effective heating of a building. The height of this project allowed us to go one further and construct a triple space. This will bring greater returns for the homeowner, and coupled with the catchment area of the south facing facade should help the owner use energy more efficiently. “The reason we – and the client – are so pleased with this project is that the design itself was not that complicated in its requirements for specialist products.

This ‘wraparound’ roof would enclose highly glazed south-facing rear elevations

elevation, offering three profiles – Planar, Banded and Curved shapes. The Planar, which was used on this project, gives a crisp and defined finish, the Banded adds a strong linear definition to the facade, while the traditional Curved finish provides the softer appeal of real tile hanging. The range comes in 10 colour options, including black and buff, and is supported by a range of accessories to satisfy any design requirement. Another important facet to both the architect’s vision for a striking and dynamic continuous form and the sustainability of the property, was the use of shade in the summer and exposure to sun in the winter. By effective use of the roof’s shape and design, the house can deliver a comfortable temperature for the inhabitants of the home throughout all seasons. A triple height space stretching from

Ibstock’s Tilebrick in Slate Blue, was chosen and coupled with grey roof tiles

The only part which required something out of the ordinary was the flowing roof. Once we had found Ibstock’s Tilebrick, we knew it was the ideal product and it played a big role in the successful completion of the project. Without the versatility and flexibility of Tilebrick, the sloping roof could have posed problems. It helped us to meet the objectives of the original brief with the aesthetic appeal and our own desired sustainability targets.” In recognition of its achievements, the development has been awarded in the Insider South West Property Awards for Residential Development of the Year. Part of the experimentation was down to the small number of buildings which were needed. This meant that a more bespoke approach could be taken. Nonetheless, continually challenging uses of space, form and orientation to build eco-friendly housing has paved the way for more passive solar projects from Stride Treglown. More projects are set to follow, so the flexibility of building products to assist architects and builders in the effective use of space, form and orientation will be key.

Voice of the Industry

The rise in labour costs in the face of drastically increased demand for construction results in the perfect storm

The perfect storm Ionic Recruitment’s Managing Director, Martyn Makinson, talks to Future Constructor & Architect about the current status of employment in the construction sector.

B

ritain needs more buildings. That’s the news story we hear nearly every day. Whether it is more new homes, office blocks or large infrastructure projects; such as HS2 and Crossrail 2. Overall, the construction industry is under immense pressure to answer the countries appetite for the large swathes of new construction projects. The trouble, as those of us in the industry are all too aware of, is that we simply don’t have the people with the skills to satisfy these demands. Beth West, Commercial Director of HS2 Ltd, the rail network that will deliver “fast, frequent and reliable” connections between London and major cities in the North, called for the skills gap to be closed to capitalise on the £11.8bn worth of contracts on the first stage of HS2. It is expected that at the peak of construction in the mid-2020s, more than 24,000 people will be working on the

18

project yet there is a short supply of people coming from education to fill the roles. West has said that 50% of the workforce will require skills at, or above, level 3, which is A-level equivalent, yet 80% of the current UK construction workforce typically only train to level 2. Beth adds that finding and securing Quantity Surveyors is also an issue because each year the UK needs 87,000 graduate engineers but in 2013 only 51,000 engineers graduated from British universities and other higher education institutions. Peter Box, the Local Government Association’s housing spokesman summed up the situation perfectly by saying, the country has trained “too many hairdressers and not enough bricklayers”. The recession cut the industry to the bone, resulting in a drastic reduction in training and a significant proportion of the workforce leaving the industry. In recent years the industry has made significant regulatory steps forward. The

Those returning to the industry will even see that the skills, qualifications and capability required has changed dramatically even from a few short years ago. This has led to a situation where skilled foreign workers are relied upon to plug in the gaps: a short term solution to a long term problem. So what does this mean for construction companies right now? The combination of industry growth and a skills shortage in the sector has resulted

Pay scales for tradespeople has dramatically increased in line with the demand for them

On an industry level, tackling this problem will require small and large companies across the entire sector to come together with the government in association with the education sector to ensure that the next generation of skilled construction personnel is being trained. This problem will only grow, with industry statistics showing that more than 400,000 construction workers will reach retirement age in the next five to 10 years and it is all

too clear we lack the people to replace them. There is vocal concern about the shortage of tradesmen and women but the cries are being drowned out by rhetoric advocating growth and investment. It is vital that we pay attention to the process that leads to success and invest in our future through training and developing the workforce required to satisfy our ambition.

in there being more work than there are tradespeople, meaning the pay scales for tradespeople has dramatically increased in line with the demand for them. This rise in labour costs in the face of drastically increased demand for construction results in the perfect storm. One of the most noticeable effects of the skills shortage is that competition for skilled people has resulted in a race to the bottom of who can pay the most to subcontractors and new employees and with deeper pockets, larger construction companies will be at an advantage. Smaller developers will find that they can’t compete with the larger companies and struggle take on more work as their margins shrink due to labour costs. Larger, publicly listed construction companies have additional challenges. They will be under pressure to expand fast enough to take advantage of industry growth. Given the lack of manpower available to them these companies are struggling to meet the demands of shareholders and analysts are only too aware that it is a universal problem that no one company can deal with. In the short term shoring up profitable and long standing relationships with subcontractors by providing favourable conditions may help to weather this storm. On an individual level, companies would do well to remember that salary isn’t everything to attracting talent. In our experience, whether it is a tradesperson or management, people often place work environment over a large salary.

Office pushes retrofit boundaries Built in the 1970s, Mansel Court in Wimbledon, London was in need of refurbishment. The concrete structure required a transformation – one that would propel it into the 21st Century, with energy efficiency at its core.

L

ow Carbon Workplace, an initiative between Carbon Trust, Threadneedle and Stanhope Plc selected the building in 2012, as one of its first flagship commercial premises, with a core aim of reducing the carbon footprint of commercial premises. To meet this end, Wilmott Dixon was selected as the main contractor, Skelly & Couch the M&E Environmental Design Consultant, Halsion Ltd as M&E Contractor on the site and Duggan Morris Architects. Uponor Building Energy were tasked with the design, supply and install of a Thermally Active Building System (TABS).

24

The key challenge of the site was to deliver a complete overhaul of the building to include improved insulation and heating solutions; while also reducing solar heat gains and the resulting requirement for cooling. Despite the energy efficiency requirements of the build however, air conditioning remained an important consideration in the development and therefore had to be considered as part of the new heating and cooling solution for the site. Pre-development, Mansel Court’s energy performance was rated band C on the EPC, with heat losses attributed

to soffits, windows and metal columns throughout the central structure of the building; presenting huge opportunities for improvement. The core plan was structured around the extension of the existing premises by 33% with an overall aim to increase energy performance, by over half.

The design detail As a retrofit and extension project, Mansel Court required the development team to work with both an existing building as well as a new structure. Technology for the heating and cooling solution was therefore designed with this in mind, combining a mix of two solutions; the Uponor Contec and a partner system Clina Capillary, to meet the needs of the building. The two technologies work in tandem to provide the most efficient solution for the site, with the Uponor Contec system installed into the new concrete floor structures. Retained concrete soffits were then covered with a Clina Capillary system, then rendered with a high conductivity plaster in order to activate the surface cooling. The radiant cooling system operates via high temperature water cooling.

HVAC

A mix of two solutions, the Uponor Contec and a partner system Clina Capillary, were specified to meet the needs of the building

The key challenge of the site was to deliver a complete overhaul of the building

The partner system, from Clina Capillary, consisting of 3.5-4.5mm Polybutylene pipes could then be connected together on to a main header. This is a key benefit on site, enabling installers to connect the system in a series, or in parallel to one another, with relative ease. Either system can be also activated to provide heating however, in the instance of Mansel Court it was cooling only. Nick Hiles, Asset Management Director at Stanhope Plc, commented: “The challenge with Mansel Court was to

design and implement a retrofit project that could meet with the guidelines of the Low Carbon Workplace Partnership; to deliver a comfortable and inspiring working environment that delivers in terms of energy efficiency. “One of the greatest barriers to change, in buildings such as this, is the incorrect assumption that the cost of retrofitting projects will outweigh the return on investment, yet this simply isn’t the case. The Low Carbon Partnership was created for this purpose and Mansel Court demonstrates that energy efficiency is not the reserve of new build developments.” Post-completion, the building now scores an EPC rating of 33 and has been awarded a BREEAM Excellent ranking. In comparison, a typical building, of this stock, would score an average 121 and, if newly built the average rating would be 45. James Griffiths, Application Manager for Special Projects at Uponor said: “For some time, there has been a belief that in order to generate the most efficient building stock, they must be new build. The 12-point rise, on top of the benchmark, for this building, is testament that with the right design and approach to retrofit, older building stock can be energy efficient. “For too long, the focus for efficient building stock has been on new build development. Mansel Court pushes the boundaries of retrofit design– highlighting that it is possible to achieve high energy efficiencies and greater usability in a retrofit development.”

The Uponor Contec system also brings a further advantage for installers and property owners, helping to save time during the installation process thanks to the option for pre-assembled modules, with integrated connection pipes – for installation into new concrete structures. PEX pipes are simply cast into the concrete slabs of the newly constructed floor plate, with capillary mat cooling plastered to existing soffits. Pipes could then be installed centrally at 150mm to ensure optimum performance and in accordance with BS EN 1264/15377.

Creative thinking can be used to enhance the building fabric

Graham Suttill, Sustainable Buildings Assessor at Darren Evans Assessments explains how to achieve Part L without renewables.

I

ncreasingly stringent efficiency requirements within Part L of the Building Regulations mean that many projects struggle to achieve compliance without bolting on renewable technologies. However, despite renewables being an easy option this is not always appropriate. In these instances, creative thinking can instead be used to enhance the building fabric and services in ways that are cost-effective, easy to implement, and above all, low energy. With the 2013 Part L revision having had a chance to bed down, developers, architects and housebuilders now have a good understanding of what is needed to comply with the regulations. However, it would appear that the majority of initial SAP calculations do not meet the emissions or fabric energy targets with the specification provided. The simplest approach in this situation might be to just add on a few PV panels, but this is rarely the route to compliance many clients want to take due to the additional cost added to a project and the resulting change in its appearance. So what can we do? The first step should be to look at the fabric of the building, which would either mean increasing the insulation thickness or specifying a higher performing insulation product which provides a better

26

U-value with the same thickness. This might increase the capital cost but would balance against savings on additional systems such as heat recovery which might be required to enable a building to pass. Within the latest SAP software the thermal bridging calculation (heat loss across junctions such as where the wall meets the floor, known as the Psi value) has a large impact on whether the dwelling will pass or fail, as improvements here will positively impact emissions and the fabric energy efficiency targets. As a starting point we will always use accredited construction details (ACDs) but ideally you need to be offering a further improvement. The most widely used set of calculated values which offer improvements over the ACDs are the Aircrete Product Association (APA) details; these can be used when a lightweight block is specified as the inner leaf of the external wall. The junction which has the largest impact on the heat loss figure is the lintel, so using an independent or high performance lintel such as the IG Hi-Therm in conjunction with the APA detail will offer a significant improvement to your SAP calculation. There are other straightforward design approaches that can be modelled to offer enhancements to an SAP score in addition to improvements to the building fabric. The two

Find this issue plus much more on the fc&a app and fca-magazine.com

Graham Suttill is Sustainable Buildings Assessor at Darren Evans Assessments. Darren Evans offers a comprehensive service for assessing the energy efficiency and performance of any residential project. most commonly specified are flue gas heat recovery systems (FGHRS) and waste water heat recovery systems (WWHRS) which are both used with combi boilers, however, WWHRS can also be used with a hot water cylinder. A FGHRS works by taking the combustion heat from a boiler which would normally be lost through the flue and using it to preheat cold water entering the boiler; this lowers the amount of energy needed to heat the water to the required temperature. WWHRS works by recycling the heat from waste water from a bath or shower to preheat cold water via a heat exchanger before it enters the boiler. Both of these systems can make significant improvements to your SAP calculation which can be the difference between a pass or fail. They are also much cheaper to install than solar PV or solar hot water systems making them a preferred route to compliance for clients in many cases. So the lesson is that by thinking outside the box and exploring alternative ways of ensuring a building meets the tougher demands of Part L on CO2, it is possible to arrive at a simple and effective solution which avoids the need for bolt-on renewables.

landscape of different functions stacked up to four storeys above ground and two below. The key space is the 5355m2 main Transfer Hall, topped with a dynamic, undulating roof form. In the development of the design, the practice used a series of conceptual structural tools to mold the geometry of the terminal landscape to accommodate the different programme functions. These include the use of ‘V-walls’, a load-bearing concrete structure that absorbs the differences in the required grids and provides daylight to the below ground levels. The spaces between these elements also form the public access from the underground car park to the other components. In 2001, Arnhem Central acquired the status from the Dutch Government as of one of the ‘New Key Projects’ (station areas of national importance). These stations should function as catalysts for urban renewal and economic growth. It is anticipated that the new Transfer Terminal, which replaces a 1950s train station, will facilitate economic growth by enabling a vastly increased daily passenger flow to the city of 110,000 commuters per day in 2020.

“Arnhem Central is no longer just a train station. It has become a transfer hub. We wanted to give a new and vital impetus to station design, so rather than merely designing the station around the activities and people flows that already took place there, the expanded architecture of the new Transfer Terminal directs and determines how people use and move around the building” said Ben van Berkel, founder and Principal Architect of UNStudio. “To keep all stakeholders on board and on the right track during the long journey to completion was a real challenge,” said Karin van Helmond, Project Manager Station Development at ProRail. “In the past 20 years many things changed in the economy, technology, politics and social environment. By focusing on our ultimate goal, the actual building of this magnificent station, we succeeded in overcoming all setbacks and risks and by working closely together we got this unprecedented job done.”

I

mproving the thermal efficiency of buildings in the UK is an increasing trend, for both existing domestic and commercial properties and new build projects, utilising alternative construction methods. Much of this work is being carried out using an assortment of external wall insulation (EWI) systems, which has seen an explosion in demand and has led to a number of suppliers significantly increasing their installation teams. The minimum requirement of any EWI system is to add additional thermal insulation to the outside of the structure, then seal the insulation with a suitable weather tight finish to protect both the extra insulation layer as well as the underlying fabric. Different systems use different types of thermal insulation, but the one thing they all have in common is that the insulation must be kept dry. In my experience, it appears to be a little known fact that most insulation layers suffer significantly due to the addition of a very small amount of

moisture. It is a general rule of thumb that a 5% ingress of moisture into this layer will reduce its thermal insulation capacity by 50%. This may be one of the factors behind the Zero Carbon Hub report, highlighting the difference between ‘As Designed’ and ‘As Built’ performance when EWI systems are used in new build properties. The potential factors mentioned in the report however are vast and varied. The report tends to point the finger at both site installation practices and the need to use products that give guaranteed on site performance. What this highlights is the importance of reliably sealing the insulation layer of any EWI system

against the weather, in both new build and refurbishment projects. The vast majority of any EWI system is protected by the final weather proof layer, but the risk areas are the small junctions where the EWI system terminates against other building components. This could be abutments against windows, doors and under parapet walls etc. Different manufacturers and installers have different ways of dealing with the detail, but a wellused and increasingly favoured method is employing expanding impregnated foam sealing tape that offers larger expansion capabilities, constant movement throughout its life and guaranteed weather resistance;

as well as thermally and acoustically insulation the sealed joints. As mentioned above, different EWI manufacturers and installers finish joints and intersections in different ways. Some will simply butt joint the insulation up to the termination area, such as a window, then cover this with a render type finish. However, there will be movement in the area where the two materials meet, as they each have different coefficients of movement. This will cause a crack where the water moisture can creep through into the insulation layer. Other installers recommend the EWI system is terminated using a stop bead, and the window, door or wall to be butt jointed up against it. However, the difference in surface levels between the stop bead and window, door or wall can result in small gaps for the weather to penetrate. Using advanced impregnated foam sealing tapes in these areas will ensure a weather tight seal. The tape will take up any construction tolerance between the materials and accommodate constant differential movement between the two components caused by the different coefficients of expansion. The nature and structure of foam tapes also means additional thermal and acoustic insulation is an added benefit. If used in a simple butt joint of insulation against the existing construction element, sealant tapes are best placed on the outer edge of the insulation layer, between the two materials, and rendered over in the usual way. It is then good practice to trowel the joint area to cause an induction crack that will form in a straight line, as it breaks along the area of least resistance. When used in combination with a stop bead, assuming the render system is sealed correctly to the bead, the sealing tape is placed between the stop bead and the window, door or wall to seal the joint. If there is a potential that the render finish could break away from the stop bead, the sealing tape can be used on both sides of the bead. The optimal size of specialist sealing tapes used for EWI systems are those designated to fit a gap of between 2m and 6mm. It is also beneficial that tapes can be compressed further to 1mm, giving a site tolerance of 5mm+. Optimal tape performance allows an expansion beyond the stated 6mm size, but as they do so, the level of weather resistance starts to reduce accordingly.

Viridor’s Energy from Waste facility in Cardiff is creating both electrical energy and a renewable energy district heating system

Euroclad raises the roof In a first of its kind for Wales, Viridor’s Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in Cardiff is creating both electrical energy and a renewable energy district heating system.

T

rident Park Energy Recovery Facility is capable of handling 350,000 tonnes of residual waste, or post-recycling waste, per year, generating 30mW of electricity – enough to power around 50,000 households. In addition to the electricity the facility will generate, the heat and high-grade steam that supports a district heating network will add an additional 20mW to the plant’s energy output. The Energy from Waste process takes everyday waste that cannot be recycled from homes, businesses and industry and, through incineration, creates steam and electrical energy. This provides a sustainable waste management alternative to the historic

practice of land-filling and ensures compliance with the legislation now regulating the landfilling of biodegradable municipal waste. Of the 350,000 tonnes of waste, some 172,000 tonnes will come from the five local councils of Cardiff, Newport, Monmouthshire, Vale of Glamorgan and Caerphilly. The £223m project began in May 2012 and supported some 600 workers at its peak, with 40% coming from the local community. Working man-hours on the project totalled over 1.6 million and with only one lost-time accident during the entire project, it was rated amongst the safest construction projects worldwide. Donald Renfrew, Head of Construction

Using computerised site manufacturing processes the Euroclad standing seam solution produced sheets over 60m long

Health & Safety at Viridor, said:“I would like to thank and congratulate every-one working on site for their ongoing commitment and excellent work to ensure a safe and timely delivery of this project. The individuals working on site have taken a proactive and collective approach to Health and Safety, which I am sure has been a key factor in the safety record of the Project to date.” Tata Steel Projects, working with Main Contractor Lagan Construction, acted as the Lead Designer for the facility. The site was never going to be the easiest.Tata Steel Projects’ geotechnical review initially identified poor ground conditions across the site. Due to the proximity to Cardiff Bay, the site has a high water table, which required a central 14m deep 16 x 48m secant wall waste bunker. By working closely with MIZ, the building envelope contractor, Euroclad supplied more than 21,000m2 of ElitePlus 4 which was installed on the new Energy from Waste plant, featuring a standing seam profile in stucco embossed plain mill aluminium. Using computerised site manufacturing processes the Euroclad standing seam solution produced sheets over 60m long, which follow the deep contours of the roof and cuts around the elliptical roof lights. The walls are a combination of vertical standing seam sheets, curved standing seam sheets and standing seam sheets laid at 60 degrees from the horizontal. In addition, 1000m2 of specialist Vieo roofing was installed on the administration building, manufactured from Rheinzinc material. 8 www.euroclad.com

Hadrian cubicles match Champagne mood The Hadrian toilet cubicles installed in the ladies toilets at the Epernay Champagne Bar in Manchester were carefully chosen to match the mood of the existing decor by specifying a particular RAL colour; a service available in the UK from Relcross Limited.

W

hen the bar was purchased in 2014 by VCP Taverns, a redecoration and upgrade was immediately implemented. While the tiles and walls in the ladies toilets were in reasonable condition they needed a little more attention, the cubicles had definitely seen better days and were certainly not meeting the champagne expectations of either the customers or the new owners. What they needed were cubicles that were much more durable, would look good

for years and could harmonise with the shade of purple and brown that is featured elsewhere in the room. Hadrian Elite steel cubicles from Relcross were selected and specified in RAL 8002 Signal Brown. These floor mounted, overhead braced toilet partitions are especially suitable for heavy use areas and require no special structural provisions to effect a rigid installation. They can be erected on any type of floor. Manufactured in North America, especially for the UK market, the Elite series ensures

privacy by using continuous stop and hinge sight line fillers along with a minimal 150mm gap from the floor to the underside of the door and panels. They are available in a choice of over 200 RAL colours to match just about any designer colour scheme. Hadrian utilises the latest powder coating technology to apply a hard, even and runfree finish. After a thorough cleaning and phosphatizing process, electrical charges ensure that the powder paint adheres uniformly over the entire product surface. The powder is then oven cured to create an attractive, permanent and consistent finish that covers every area of the product and resists impact, abrasions, chemicals, detergents and acids. Thicker paint application helps to combat rust. Powder coating allows a greater paint thickness to be applied without compromising surface uniformity.Wet paints simply cannot achieve the same thickness without the threat of unsightly runs and surface irregularities. The celebratory mood of the bar is continued in the toilets with the walls decorated with pithy champagne related quotes from famous champagne drinkers as diverse as Marlene Dietrich and Napoleon Bonaparte. A year after the installation was completed the cubicles have been subjected to continual use but are looking as good as new and maintaining the venue’s quality image and appeal. The Epernay Champagne Bar is rapidly becoming the place to chill out in central Manchester. Located within cork popping distance of the Manchester Central Convention Complex, they are also very popular for afternoon teas and Champagne Masterclasses for bridal parties. 8 www.hadrian-cubicles.co.uk * sales@relcross.co.uk ( 01380

The use of Kebony enabled the restaurant to achieve the natural look and feel desired

Weathered beauty At the base of a rocky cliff face on the Turkish coast in Istanbul now stands The Babylon Beach Club. Housing the Monk Restaurant and a year round multi-use concert venue, the beach club was designed by architect Selin Maner, who worked in close collaboration with the owners on the design. Approximately 2000m2 of Kebony wood was used to surface all buildings for this project

L

ocated north of Istanbul in the village of Kilyos the facility sits on a 68,000m2 site on the Black Sea coast, located below rocky cliffs and in a former stone quarry. The project entailed replacing the existing restaurant building, and adding additional buildings, including a beach bar, toilet and changing rooms, shops, entry gate, security quarters, back-of-house and management offices. It is one of the only concert venues in Istanbul to incorporate nature and the sea. The existing buildings were concrete and the entire seafront area had been covered in asphalt. A key objective was to return the setting to a more natural state, both through site planning and choice of materials, such as Kebony. The use of Kebony enabled the restaurant to achieve the natural look and feel desired. Approximately 2000m2 of Kebony wood was used to surface all buildings for this project. In the summer, the venue functions primarily as a beach resort, serving up to 1500 visitors in the restaurant, beach bar, beach facilities and private bay. In spring and autumn, Babylon Kilyos is a venue for outdoor concerts and music venues, hosting up to 20,000 concertgoers and in the winter months only the 100 guest capacity indoor restaurant is used since visitors would rather be inside, surrounding the fireplaces. As such the Monk restaurant presented an interesting creative challenge for Maner, as the size requirements of the indoor and outdoor space alters so dramatically between seasons. To solve this challenge the design team devised an innovative glass extension on a rolling track; designed by Libart, a local Kinetic

Kebony is more stable than the original wood so that its capacity for shrinkage and swelling is reduced by 50%

added Maner. As such he was particularly excited to discover that Kebony provided a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and “was able to meet the criteria”. Developed in Norway, the Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly, patented process, which enhances the properties of sustainable softwood with a bio-based liquid derived from agricultural crop waste. By ‘pickling’ the wood with this liquid under pressure, the wood is permanently modified, resulting in greatly improved durability and dimension stability, giving Kebony the characteristics of premium hardwood. A recent study by Norwegian environmental consulting firm Bergfal & Co. demonstrated that Kebony has substantially lower carbon footprint than its tropical hardwood equivalents. The carbon footprint

of modified Kebony is approximately 459 kilograms per cubic meter, compared with the carbon footprint for Brazilian IPE which is in the range of 7500 – 15,000 kilograms per cubic meter. Kebony is sustainable from a carbon footprint point of view, with no emissions of greenhouse gases. Thus, Kebony’s offer of a sustainable, durable and costefficient wood product delivered everything that was required of the project without the use of tropical hardwood. Maner added:“Based on our experience with Kebony cladding, we are planning on using Kebony decking material on another project in Indonesia. We hope to set a positive example that there are sustainable and affordable alternatives to using tropical hardwood.”

Architecture firm. This creates additional indoor seating space for the winter but provides a decked extension to the restaurant and beach bar for the summer, allowing the space to remain outdoor for the summer and thus increasing the club’s capacity. The motorised system for the rolling track, which enables the glass extension to move into place, is a new design from Libart, it exhibits 24v DC motors and a solar panel to charge the batteries. During the spring to autumn months, when the outdoor concert venue is in use, the mechanisms for the extension remains concealed inside the building. The extension fits over the original freestanding building, standing at 3.6m it accommodates the height of the original building when retracted and parked. The extension is constructed from insulated glass which has a special coating which will protect it from corrosion from the sea wind. In the same way, the use of Kebony for the cladding was important to ensure the club was protected from wear and weathering by the elements, over time Kebony acquires its characteristic silver-grey patina whilst not losing any of its performance characteristics. “As the buildings are on the seafront, we loved the fact the Kebony weathers beautifully,” said Selin Maner. With heightened resistance to decay, fungi, insects and other microorganisms, Kebony is more stable than the original wood so that its capacity for shrinkage and swelling is reduced by 50%. Having worked extensively in Southeast Asia, the architect was very keen to ensure that the wood was sustainable and not from a tropical source.“Sustainability, durability and affordability were key factors in this project,”

Timber

I

ncreasingly Energy from Waste (EfW) plants are moving away from the traditional ‘square box’ designs and implementing modern architecture to build eye-catching facilities, which better depict the modern hi-tech facilities they house. A good example of this in practice is one of Clugston’s current projects, the Leeds Recycling and Energy Facility (RERF). The facility is being built by Clugston in joint venture with CNIM, the French specialist process engineers, for Veolia, who have secured a waste management contract with Leeds City Council.

Award-winning designs

The Cross Green development in Leeds features a striking 42m high-arched timber frame

Timber facility makes its mark Buildings have been constructed in timber since the dawn of time, but none have been quite as striking as Leeds Recycling and Energy Facility. Scheduled for completion in summer 2016, the Energy from Waste facility is a prime example of the changing face of an industry embracing innovations in construction and architecture. Paul Gouland, Marketing Manager at Clugston Construction, explains more. 42

The Cross Green development in Leeds features a striking 42m high-arched timber frame, an award-winning design, which will enclose the process hall. Making use of traditional materials in a non-traditional manner, it is believed to be the largest ever timber frame – measuring 123m long and 35m wide – of its type to be erected in the UK. The arches have been manufactured using Glulam laminated timber, supplied by German timber frame specialist Hess Timber, one of the most sustainable construction materials available. The completed project will also integrate an 1800m2 green wall consisting of robust plants, making it one the largest in the world. The sustainable theme is retained throughout the construction site, which uses recycled products in its foundations. Old concrete slabs that had been covering brown field site were broken up and crushed for reuse, which saved importing new aggregate and disposing of the old concrete to landfill, in turn cutting out hundreds of wagon movements. Alongside the key theme of constructing a sustainable building, which could house the process equipment,Veolia also wanted to ensure the new plant was futureproof. Not only will the facility make use of the latest available technology, but will also be able to constantly advance with changing technologies to increase the efficiency of recovering materials.

Environmentally friendly With much talk of the circular economy, the new generation of EfW plants are playing their part and seeking every avenue to re-use and recycle materials it both processes and uses in their construction. It is estimated that during the 25-year Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract the facility will help the Council meet its environmental targets saving, during the period, more than £200m in landfill tax and environmental levies.

Timber The new plant will have the ability to divert and process approximately 214,000 tonnes of waste each year, which would otherwise have gone to landfill. About 20% of this is expected to be recyclable and the remainder will be incinerated to generate up to 11MW of reusable electricity to the National Grid – sufficient to power up to 20,000 homes. The facility will also have the potential to provide heat to local sites by capturing steam from the processes and piping it via a proposed new local distribution network. Waste transported to the Leeds facility will pass through an automated state-ofthe-art pre-treatment plant where any recyclable materials, such as cardboard, plastic, ferrous and nonferrous metals will be removed for recycling. The remaining waste will then pass by elevated conveyor into the energy recovery facility and stored within a large bunker with 26m high walls, from where it will be fed into the process hall. The new plant will have the ability to divert and process approximately 214,000 tonnes of waste each year

Whilst the base features of EfW plants remain relatively consistent, no two facilities are the same and each is unique. The required process capacity, site constraints and local planning can all impact on the building design and layout. Examples of different types of sites that Clugston has worked on include the EfW facility at Ardley in Oxfordshire for Viridor. Designed to process 300,000 tonnes of residual non-recyclable waste and capable of generating 24MW of electricity, the architect designed the building to mimic one of the dinosaur

footprints found in the limestone quarry where the scheme was built. The result is an eye-catching building, that can be seen from the nearby M40. Similarly the Lincolnshire facility for FCC, which opened last year and can convert 150,000 tonnes of municipal waste into 11MW of electricity, incorporates some of the most innovative use of external cladding in the UK. As for the Leeds EfW facility, it has already

become an iconic building on the South Eastern gateway into the City. With indications that the market for larger scale municipal EfW plants is drawing to an end, the future trend will be towards finding economic solutions for the smaller municipal waste authorities and dealing with the still large volumes of commercial and industrial waste.

Beacon of light Schréder, a supplier of lighting solutions in the UK, has designed and installed a 400m bespoke LED handrail and colour change feature lighting for a new pedestrian/ cycle bridge across the River Thames, as part of the LSTF (Local Sustainable Transport Fund) project, linked to the reconfiguration of Reading Station and the town centre by Reading Borough Council.

T

he new bridge is the focal element of the Council’s wider scheme, which aims to provide better connectivity between Caversham to the North of the Thames and Reading to the South. The bridge offers a new pedestrian and cycle route across the river, which will relieve congestion on the two existing vehicular routes and provide a direct pedestrian route between Caversham and the newly redeveloped Reading Station. David Moore, Neighbourhood Service Manager, Reading Borough Council, commented:“While the new bridge looks fantastic during the day, at night it provides a carpet of light for the area, with an imaginative array of colours and movement, particularly at

the top of the central mast.” Schréder was contracted by Balfour Beatty and worked closely with project engineer Peter Brett Associates to create the installation. Scott Witchalls, Partner, Peter Brett Associates, said:“Schréder’s lighting design for the bridge is really very striking, but also practical, and will help to encourage regular use of this iconic structure by pedestrians and cyclists; contributing to more sustainable travel in Reading.” A specialist installation team from Schréder fitted the LED handrail and colour change feature lighting onto the bridge, which was manufactured by Hollandia. Schréder worked in conjunction with Hollandia to ensure compatibility with the lighting equipment,

as the installation involved complex design considerations, including creating a custom system to fit the LED handrail onto the curvature of the bridge, and enabling the handrail to flex with the movement of the suspension bridge. Moore continued:“Schréder and Peter Brett Associates were an ideal choice for this project, and the quality of installation and peace of mind that comes from the longevity of the products makes the bridge a great investment for Reading.” In addition to the LED handrail, Urbis Schréder installed a series of its SCULP floodlights to illuminate the bridge, including one placed in the middle of the ‘tuning fork’ at the top of the 40m high-mast. Urbis Schréder has also installed a colour changing lighting display around the rest of the bridge, which includes 28 of its Enyo LEDs, running up the suspension cables, two Noctis 225 LED floodlights recessed beneath the bridge to illuminate the underside, and flexible LED strips underneath two ‘floating’ benches located on the bridge. The adaptability of the pre-programmed Digital Multiplex (DMX) controller Urbis Schréder supplied with its LED lighting scheme allows Reading Council to run a new lighting display every day.The LED handrail is connected to Reading Borough Council’s Mayflower Central Management System (CMS), which it uses to control the majority of its public lighting. Nick Cruse, Operations Director, Schréder, added:“The new LED handrail for the pedestrian/cycle bridge was a complicated installation, with 231 individual sections manufactured and assembled on site and several key design elements inherent in the bridge’s structure. The resounding success of the project demonstrates that Schréder remains at the forefront of modern lighting design and continues to meet new challenges that arise.”

T

he RIBA-accredited CPD seminars, lasting 45 minutes each, allow individuals to remain up to date with changes in practice so that they can make informed decisions about which products to request in their specifications. Run during lunch breaks from any business premises requested, the training sessions, which cover a diverse range of topics including solutions for tiling balconies, laying underfloor heating and installing wetrooms, are being offered free of charge with lunch included. In Schlüter’s Integrated Solutions for Wetrooms with Tile and Stone Coverings seminar, the company’s popular waterproofing and wetroom range will be explored and explained. Andrew Curry, Schlüter’s Technical and Training Consultant, commented:“The session will provide all the information and knowledge needed, from an integrated approach, on the

46

solutions for wetroom installations at design and specification stage, and we hope that by the end of the seminar participants will have gained confidence in specifying an integrated solution for wet room installations.” The second seminar being run is called Movement Joints and Uncoupling Membranes for Tile and Stone Coverings. The session will provide information on how to solve problems such as moisture movement in the substrate or drying shrinkage by specifying the appropriate movement joints and uncoupling membranes in specifications. Andrew said: “Participants will come away from the seminar confident in being able to specify movement joints and uncoupling membranes to counteract stresses and prevent future problems, such as failed sealed connections, cracked tiles and joints, from occurring.” Creating a patio, balcony or terrace that lasts the test of time is the third topic to be explored by Schlüter in its brand new seminar, Balcony and Terrace Solutions for Tile and Stone Coverings. The seminar will discuss the importance of using effective modern methods of construction to ensure lasting balcony and terrace installations. It will also explain the importance of waterproofing measures and will look at some of the benefits of the different products currently available on the market. Andrew commented:“We will look at how

400m2 of fully prefabricated Sureclad engineered stone cladding, in a natural limestone colourway and honed finish has provided a premium quality aesthetic, for the lower storeys of the nine buildings that form this stunning complex; designed by Stockwool and developed by St James, part of the Berkeley Group. Two circular towers called for smooth rounded facades, presenting Shackerley and Kent-based specialist, facade installation contractor, Stanmore, with a significant

technical challenge. Shackerley’s Sureclad Hang On system was customised to cater for large format curved panels, cut to a radius from engineered stone blocks. In addition, elegantly faceted facades were required to clad curved elevations of adjacent buildings. Shackerley and Stanmore worked very closely together, developing bespoke solutions at every stage, from the facade designs to the meticulous scheduling and palletisation of the prefabricated system. Stanmore’s installers also visited Shackerley to receive expert training in the use of the Sureclad system.

Two circular towers called for smooth rounded facades, presenting Shackerley and Stanmore with a significant technical challenge

As this was the first time that Sureclad had been used with curved engineered stone panels, the companies arranged for the bespoke system to be tested to NHBC criteria at VINCI Technology Centre UK. Construction Director at St James, Brian Paterson, commented: “Shackerley’s system was brought to our attention when we came to value engineer this project. By switching the engineered stone specification to Sureclad, we’ve benefitted from a more flexible and lighter facade solution than originally planned and from very substantial cost savings, whilst still achieving our architects’ original design intention. We’re delighted with the results.” He concluded: “The quality of Kew Bridge West has been recognised within the industry. St James has received an NHBC Seal of Excellence Award for achieving the highest standards in house building at this prestigious development.” 8 www.shackerley.com * info@shackerley.com ( 01257

Preformed protection and build consistency A cavity wall masonry sill constructed from brick, stone, tile or concrete usually substantially impinges or closes the cavity. In some instances the sill actually connects with the inner leaf. There is a requirement to prevent dampness from permeating inwardly and address cold bridging. An advantageous way of achieving compliance is to incorporate a preformed multi-functional Undersill tray. The Type U Undersill tray is a preformed shaped DPC unit that enables the mason to swiftly create a profiled sill within a cavity wall to a consistent design and shape. The Type U Undersill tray is bedded in position prior to sill construction commencing. It acts as integral formwork into which the sill materials are laid. The front of the Type U projects forward of the masonry face and has a front upturned lip.

This acts as a front edge alignment guide for the mason, and promotes a uniform finish. The Undersill tray has stopends to prevent end water discharge and promote integration with reveal closers. Once the sill has cured a grooved detachment line permits the front of the tray to be removed leaving just the sill projecting. The remainder of the tray remains insitu, acting as a damp course barrier so dampness is prevented from tracking inwardly. The back upstand of Type U tray can incorporate bonded insulation to isolate

For the cold roofs, warm roofs and green roof area, totalling over 1000m2, Decothane Delta 25 was applied on to various primed surfaces, from concrete deck to a mix of flat board and tapered Decotherm insulation. All the roof areas were covered by timer decking for use as viewing galleries and cafe seating areas, where a Sika Liquid Plastics protective layer was also used. The Sika Liquid Plastics technical team were on hand throughout the project to offer expert guidance, from initial design and specification to quality control during installation and final inspection, resulting in the issue of single point guarantees. Kristian Lewis, Weatherwell Company Manager, said: “We completed our portion of the project in 14 weeks, despite working through winter in very difficult conditions. Even in low temperatures we were able to expertly apply the Sika Liquid Plastics waterproofing membranes. Roof refurbishment at two London tourist attractions The National Gallery and the Science Museum – two of London’s major and iconic visitor attractions – have benefitted from a planned roof maintenance programme, using Sika Sarnafil membranes and specialist contractor, Delomac Roofing. Working with the National Gallery since 1995, a programme of roof replacement and thermal upgrading has seen in excess of 12,000m2 of Sika Sarnafil membranes installed, together with insulation, roof lights and walkways in a series of over 30 completed projects. Working closely with the client and architect, specifications have been delivered using the Sika Sarnafil Partner Supply Chain, to ensure watertight and long lasting protection to the priceless works of art on display. At the Science Museum, ageing and poorly insulated roof coverings were targeted for an upgrade and replacement in a series of tender awards, all successfully

won by Delomac and Sika Sarnafil. Brendan McNulty, Director of Delomac Roofing, said: “With the impact of rising utility costs, effective thermal upgrades were completed with the roof works, delivering tangible cost savings.” The Science Museum’s Flight Gallery houses many historic planes, including a Spitfire and a prototype Harrier. Visitors were able to safely enjoy these exhibits without disruption while these important roof works were completed close by. At both sites, environmental and whole life cost considerations were key in material specification – with a target to reduce energy use. Equally, the

lightweight membranes and considered planned specifications allowed system overlays with an entirely flame-free cold application, ensuring minimal internal disturbance to visitor experience. “The roof refurbishments on both buildings have been designed to an exceptionally high standard. Our effective installation, backed by Sika Sarnafil’s robust guarantees ensure the client has peace of mind for years to come,” Brendan added.

Cyclone, a natural stone finish effect. Minima is available in a variety of materials, from high pressure laminate (HPL) to glass to real wood veneer. Solid grade laminate (SGL) was specifically chosen on this job, as it is a durable, versatile material that can cater for wet and dry areas, and it can handle a high volume of traffic. It was installed throughout the toilet cubicles, changing cubicles and shower cubicles proving its ability to accommodate each area. Amwell aims to meet all of its customers needs. Plymouth Yacht Haven is a fantastic example to show how flexible it is for each individual project. Plymouth Yacht Haven was not afraid to explore with Amwell’s systems and ask for something out of the ordinary. ark Crick, Design Director of Crisp Designed Ltd, who was appointed to design and refit the offices, explains: “The client wanted an interior that was different, yet professionally welcoming to clients, so we came up with several bright and zany designs. We had a strict budget and deadline, so it was important to use a reliable and efficient flooring manufacturer.”

Tessera Alignment, a sophisticated and cleverly textured cut and loop carpet tile, was specified in the popular nucleus colour throughout the main office space. This was peppered with another perfectly coordinated Alignment carpet tile featuring a vivid green accent colour. Designed to complement the most contemporary commercial interiors, Alignment has a multi-height loop construction with a

bold directional theme, tempered by the introduction of intersecting random blocks of rich cut pile. Breakout zones and other feature areas were emphasised with luxurious fusion bonded Westbond carpet tiles. Organic curves and fluid wavy lines were cut into the floor space in bright lime green, jet black and anthracite to mirror the curvilinear furniture. The dense and plush nature of these cut pile tiles has added texture to the floor space and helped to maintain excellent acoustic levels. In direct contrast, Crisp Designed specified Allura luxury vinyl tile in the spring forest stripe colourway for the two tea stations, providing a durable resilient surface that is easy to clean and maintain and which perfectly replicates Qlik’s brand colours. “This was a challenging brief in terms of balancing the vibrant and dynamic vision with the budget but Forbo hit the mark for us,” comments Mark. “We were able to source a virtually unlimited range of suitable products from one supplier, with the option of combining different colourways into bespoke designs, and we benefitted from highly efficient service and delivery.” 8 www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/offices * info.flooring.uk@forbo.com ( 0844

Rinnai welcomes advent of ‘transparent’ Energy Labelling Rinnai, designer and manufacturer of the Infinity range of continuous flow gas fired water heaters, welcomed the implementation of the ERP and Energy Labelling Directive on 26th September as its expansive range of water heaters can satisfy a complete range of load profiles and all units are A-rated. In September, the Energy Related Products (ERP) Directive, incorporating Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives for water heaters (Lot 2) came into force, meaning that water-heating products sold in the UK need to meet minimum energy performance criteria in order to be legally placed on the market, and will require an energy label. “The Energy Labelling Directive offers transparency to specifiers, installers and end users who will now have a clear guide for choosing the most efficient units available,” says Tony Gittings, Managing Director of Rinnai UK.

“Rinnai now brings to market the most expansive range of A-rated appliances, that have load profiles suitable for both domestic and commercial projects. Our appliances range from load profile(s) for small domestic models to XXL sized commercial units,” says Gittings. Rinnai is also set up to offer installers expert help with system labelling. The onus of labelling in this scenario falls on the installer, rather than the manufacturer, who will be responsible for system labels for those installations that combine a water heater with renewables, for example.

Rinnai has been working well ahead of the deadline for ERP and took delivery of its coveted A-rated labels in July. To get to that stage, Rinnai had all of its appliances tested twice. The first test was carried out at the Rinnai headquarters in Japan, where units underwent rigorous interrogation by the company’s expert engineers and then again by notified body who awarded the rating. 8 www.rinnaiuk.com

Modus maxes UK’s top energy ratings

Modus is one of two leading systems from Eurocell to achieve the BRFC’s Window Energy Rating (WER) of A++. This landmark award is further recognition of Modus’s market-leading energy efficiency characteristics. The company’s Eurologik system has also been similarly recognised. Modus designs with the new A++ rating include casement, reversible and tilt and turn; together with the Eurologik 70 casement. These windows are among the very first to achieve the ‘A++’ band in England & Wales for WERs since the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) launched the new rating in May 2015.A++ is only given to those windows with an energy index value equal to or greater than +20.

The long awaited Vue cinema in Farnborough is now open, with an ultra-modern exterior featuring an innovative Screening Solution from Levolux, the UK’s leading specialist. The cinema occupies a prominent position, so special attention was given to its external appearance to create a positive impression to visitors. As a result, Levolux was approached to design, supply and install an unusual screening solution. Each fin, which measures 200mm deep by 50mm thick, is arranged vertically and is formed from two extruded pieces. A straight lower portion is topped by a curved aluminium extrusion that helps to screen roof plant and equipment from view, at ground level and from overlooking buildings. *

Melbourne House is one of four buildings that comprise central London’s Aldwych Quarter. The 450,000ft2 complex experienced a major refurbishment in 1974 which involved the removal of the original subdivided windows and their substitution with undivided, plain glazing. This seriously compromised the external appearance of the building. The latest refurbishment; undertaken by main contractor ISG, involved the replacement of all windows between the second and eighth floors with new double-glazed, openable Crittall Corporate W20 windows. New light on waste recycling Mid-Sussex District Council has opened a refuse and recycling depot at Haywards Heath. Designed by Milan Babic Architects, its crisp simplicity is a dramatic example of the Kalwall translucent cladding system in action. Replacing an existing 50 year-old depot, the new building is designed to be more environmentally friendly, reducing the Council’s greenhouse gas emissions, its energy consumption and use of water, thereby generating long term financial

savings and other benefits for every resident of the district. The project boasts a number of new technologies to reduce running costs and the carbon footprint including photovoltaic cells and rainwater collection tanks. It also

benefits from the use of highly insulating Kalwall cladding which helps to reduce both energy consumption and heat loss by diffusing natural daylight across the interior. Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the offices are bathed with natural daylight, both from the cladding and the roof above the workshop which means less artificial lighting. Kalwall is distributed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by Structura UK, a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products. The company has had all three of its ISO certifications successfully renewed for three years: OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification and ISO 9001 Quality Management certification. 8 www.structura-uk.com

Vision Design Projects introduces new addition to its range 3D detection reduces lift door damage Copenhagen Airport has reduced the frequency of lift door accidents by 90% thanks to Panachrome 3D light curtains from Avire. When 14 of the airport’s lifts were protected by standard 2D light curtains, employees driving trucks would regularly misjudge their approach and collide with the doors. During that period there were between one and five incidents of door damage recorded every day. Following installation of Avire’s 3D detectors, that number had dropped to three a month. A construction fixings failure in a safety-critical installation can have potentially fatal consequences. Adhesive, also known as chemical or resin, anchors range from high performance Pure Epoxy and Vinylesters to the popular and widely used Polyester products. Polyester anchors are all too often subject to misuse. In order to make an informed, and ultimately safe, choice DEWALT believe it’s important to understand the key differences between the various resin-bonded anchors. Winning access campaigns in Britain When it comes to winning access campaigns, a Stannah Maxilift MRL motor room-less passenger lift has earned its wings in the Battle of Britain Visitor Centre in Folkestone, Kent. This EN81-70 compliant lift solution ensures accessibility for all. The lift is housed in an aesthetically attractive, circular structure, with the stairs sited to the left, winding around and behind it. Hydraulically ropedriven in a wall-mounted shaft, the lift operates over a distance of 4180mm, at a speed of .50m/s. The motor room-less capability saves space with the controller located in a landing architrave at ground-floor level.

goods lifts to help bring stepfree access to the travelling public, whatever their mobility level. Combining function and style for scenic travel and sense of space, the fully glazed, hydraulic passenger/goods lifts travel at a speed of 0.63m/s between the platform level and the footbridge, a distance range of 5645mm – 5765mm. Each lift has been tailored to fit shaft constraints of 2100mmW x 2675mmD. The lift cars have also been customised from single entry to through car, with NICEIC electrical 240v installation, testing and certification offered as an optional extra.

Schueco UK

New facade has vents that are fully concealed New from Schueco UK is the FWS 60 CV concealed vent facade, a state-of-the-art aluminium system for floor-toceiling ribbon windows where it is not possible to distinguish from the outside which vents open and which vents are fixed. This revolutionary innovation, which also has the added benefit of maximising light transmission through the facade, is achieved by merging the vent with the load-bearing structure. Even from inside, the only indications of an opening unit are a flat slimline shadow gap and the presence of the window handle. Moreover, to ensure safety in use, an almost invisible all-glass Juliet balcony can be integrated into the areas which have opening vents.

Parametric Facade System launched The launch of Schueco’s Parametric Facade System by sustainable building envelope

specialist, Schueco UK Ltd, offers architects a new level of dynamic design freedom. For the first time ever, geometrically complicated 3D facades can be designed as straightforward system solutions whose cost can be calculated with the certainty of a series product. Like all Schueco systems, the Parametric Facade is highly insulated, with Uf values up to 0.5 W/m2K, and surface elements that can be transparent or opaque. Sunlight and shading, guided views and daylight optimisation can all be employed as active design factors. The system can also accommodate BIPV panels for solar energy generation.

Introducing new Passive Housecertified window Newly available from leading sustainable building envelope specialist, Schueco UK Limited, is the Schueco AWS 90.SI+ window, one of a growing number of Schueco window, door and facade systems to have received full Passive House Certification. The window’s outstanding thermal performance – it delivers a U-value of 0.8 W/m2K with 0.7 W/m2K triple glazing – is the result of advanced insulation technology and enables it to make a positive contribution to the overall energy efficiency of a building. In addition to its attractive appearance, Schueco AvanTec concealed fittings impart an impressive degree of security.

Knauf AMF

Year at a Glance

Heradesign proves it’s good for business Heradesign, from Knauf AMF Ceilings, has been specified in bold red and blue ceiling and wall coverings for four meeting booths in a newly refurbished 1950s building at the London Business School. Architects Sheppard Robson designed the booths in natural materials to add colour and simplicity while complementing the existing materials in the original building. Principal architect, Gavin Robinson was drawn to Heradesign for its aesthetic qualities. With its organic woodwool woven surface, Heradesign mirrors the textured straw board material in the roof of the existing construction and works in harmony with the natural birch panelling of the booths’ exterior.

Leading the way with clever acoustics Heradesign from Knauf AMF Ceilings has been installed in a brand new school building that caters for pupils with complex special needs. Architects Haverstock specified Heradesign for the school’s

corridor and entrance space. “The Heradesign panels were a cost-effective solution. They’re hung as rafts, fitted together in continuous strips, running either side of the roof lights. The school liked that Heradesign could be used to introduce colour in the corridor, highlighting certain areas.” Heradesign is very versatile and can be colourmatched to almost any colour including those from popular systems such as RAL, NCS or StoColor – in the case of the school, the panels are matched to their emblem.

Stamp of approval at Post Office HQ The Post Office has relocated its head office to Finsbury Dials in London with the help of architects HLW International. The brief was to design open plan offices on three floors with a flexible events area and cafe on the ground floor. Heradesign ceilings in bold colours were installed in the two main entrance areas which lead to striking touchdown zones that wrap around the main atrium. At the Post Office HQ, Heradesign panels were colour matched to the floor and wall colours to create spaces that have a sense of vitality and enclosure about them. Heradesign can be specified in a wide variety of colours including pastels, solid and metallic colours.

Peace and serenity for new church Emsworth Baptist Church has a new building on the edge of conservation area in Hampshire. The church has a modern, minimalist interior with flexible, multi-function spaces. Haverstock, designers and architects of the project, specified Heradesign ceilings from Knauf AMF throughout the building to help fulfil two criteria as they explained: “Creating a simple design for the church interior was one of our main objectives. The Heradesign panels work in harmony with the finished look we wanted. They also help to control the reverberation times in the open areas.” Heradesign provides the highest rating (Class A) for sound absorption, reducing ambient sound levels and ensuring speech can be heard.

Heradesign offers first class acoustic performance Heradesign ceiling rafts were installed at Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) new Premier Lounge at London Heathrow Airport. The lounge offers an exceptional level of comfort and privacy so

business and first class passengers can relax in sophisticated surroundings. Architects Bramble Design Limited (BDL) were appointed to design the interior using SIA’s corporate style and ensure that all materials selected complied with Heathrow’s stringent requirements. Les Martin, Director at BDL, explains why Heradesign was particularly suited for the project: “Heradesign provided the best option for the ceiling panels because they closely match the grain and texture of the original SIA concept.”

Acoustic control reaches new heights City of Glasgow College opened the doors to its new £228m city centre Riverside Campus this autumn. The campus houses teaching accommodation for the Nautical and Engineering departments and a new halls of residence for the College. Heradesign from Knauf AMF is installed in the state-ofthe art Engineering Hall. This large expanse includes lathe workshops, welding areas and a dedicated working ships engine room. Heradesign ceiling panels were chosen because they comply with Building Regulation BB93: acoustic design of schools and provide outstanding acoustic control in this potentially noisy space.

One is its size – being the largest hospital building project in Europe to date, and another its design for client NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde by specialist healthcare architects IBI Group (formerly Nightingale Associates) – which is colourful and brave in its use of internal “floating” cantilevered pods, among other elements. First impressions aside, it is equally ground-breaking in the background, being the largest off-cut recycling project to date by Armstrong Ceilings who diverted more than 10,000m2 or 35 tonnes of mineral ceiling tile off-cuts from landfill.

World premiere from Dallmer As the best known name in high specification drainage systems for hotel, leisure and top end residential developments, Dallmer has followed on from its acclaimed CeraLine and CeraWall product launches with the premiere of its latest creation: CeraFloor. The exciting new addition to the Dallmer collection offers architects and interior designers a further dimension in terms of elegance as well as function; with CeraFloor having been developed to fit smoothly and stylishly into hardwood as well as solid or reconstructed stone flooring. Key features include the extremely hardwearing and easy to clean nature of the visible elements as well as an integrated cross-fall to promote smooth flow characteristics.

40,000m2 roof area successfully drained by Dallmer RDC, a world leader as an IT hardware disposal and computer recycling company recently purchased a former Crittall Windows factory in Braintree, opened by Margaret Thatcher in 1990. The building had been

left empty for five years and was in a poor state of repair. Due to the nature of RDC’s business, it was essential for the building to be completely water tight. Complete Projects CDM of Sheffield was called in to upgrade the water drainage from the roof coordinated with gutter repairs. Complete Projects used a total of 54 Dallmer D62 PVC flange siphonic roof drains, each one placed to match the recalculated siphonic roof drainage system, properly fixed in the gutter and bonded to the lining.

Floor drains prove their fitness at Fulham gym Dallmer has supplied its stylish CeraLine shower channels for a chain of popular private fitness clubs stretching from the capital to the Midlands. The Fulham gym is one of the latest venues to be refurbished. Dallmer was able to supply the CeraLine W2000 units so that they could be finished on site. Work was completed on schedule, in June, with the design of the rugged, stainless steel and polypropylene drainage channels helping to speed both the plumbing connections and the laying of the floor tiling. The two metre long sections of channel feature sanded flanges to ensure a secure bond with the under-tile waterproofing layer; while the height adjustable legs facilitate millimetre accurate levelling.

Bedford has recently launched a new Spa. Barnes Construction contacted Dallmer, a company with over 100 years experience in this sphere and sought advice as to which of its extensive range of products would be suitable. Dallmer recommended its floor channel Ceraline Pronto F 600mm with a built in depth of only 129.5mm, which would be suitable for each location in the Spa. The Pronto was extremely simple to install, flanges securing the drain to the floor are grade quartz sand coated onto epoxy glue which gives optimal waterproof adhesion.

Wet rooms benefit from elegant drainage channels A high specification refurbishment and extension project at a residential property in a desirable area of West London has included installation of linear shower drains selected from the extensive range of Dallmer Limited. Two stylish shower spaces were created: one designed as a wet room while the other featured a two metre high glass wall set into a floor channel, with a rain head over. J&Z Construction’s interior designers chose products from the Dallmer range to ensure water was removed unobtrusively but effectively from the floor. Dallmer supplied two of its Ceraline-W-800mm floor channels with Ceraline Custom cover plates.

Walthamstow blues A 13-storey hotel next to Walthamstow Central Station, London, has been completed, clad with Nordic Blue Living copper from Aurubis Architectural alongside black brickwork. Designed by Rolfe-Judd Architects, the hotel tower is conceived as a series of vertical articulated masses, differentiated by facades clad either in black brick or Nordic Blue Living 1 copper. Nordic Blue is a factory-applied patina developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. In marine climates, the natural copper patina contains some copper chloride giving it more of a blue colour and this is emulated with Nordic Blue using 100 % brochantite.

Copper memories Corrugated Nordic Brown copper, from Aurubis Architectural, defines the character of a new secondary school in Strømmen, Norway, and is reminiscent of the town’s industrial heritage. Copper satisfies the client’s requirement

for a 100-year lifespan school and its sustainability credentials are important in this lowenergy building. But the unique visual characteristics of the corrugated Nordic Brown copper proved central to the design, both as a thoroughly contemporary material changing over time and as a memory of the riverside sawmills and later heavy industries in the town. Nordic Brown products are preoxidised at Aurubis’ factory to give straightaway the same oxidised brown surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment.

Copper conflagration Visitors approaching Żory in Poland are greeted by a dramatic, copper exhibition pavilion in the form of dancing flames – referencing the city’s historical links with fire and its Festival of Fire that continues to this day. The sculptural design of the new pavilion, by architects OVO Grabczewscy Architekci, was inspired by an irregularly shaped building area resulting from below-ground infrastructure and other constraints on its prominent site.Three independent walls, each clad in crisply detailed strips of Aurubis’ Nordic Standard copper, interact to create the ‘fire’, separated by fully glazed entrances. Copper also covers several internal wall surfaces, alongside exposed concrete.

A Royal welcome Trapezoidal pavilion roofs and facades, clad in Aurubis’ Nordic Royal golden copper alloy, define the welcoming character of a new children’s nursery building, Arcadia Nursery. Malcolm Fraser Architects selected Nordic Royal for its warm and friendly persona, so crucial to a nursery setting. Having used bronze on other projects, the designers felt that this would become too dark, whereas Nordic Royal will stay light, both in terms of the colour and visual weight, sitting well alongside the timber cladding. Double lock, standing seam joints were used to give structure to the pitched roofs but the Nordic Royal wall cladding is installed with a reverse coulisseau joint, avoiding projections that children might catch themselves on at low level.

Conceived as a landmark in the tradition of wayside and pilgrimage chapels, the house provides a setting for specially commissioned works by Contemporary Artist Grayson Perry, exploring the unique qualities of Essex through the life of a fictional character, Julie Cope. The exterior is clad in green and white ceramic tiles, cast from originals made by Perry, depicting Julie as mother and icon, along with symbols associated with her life.

Civic supermarket On a key route into the heart of Chester, the flagship Waitrose store is fully integrated with a new public realm. As part of a master-plan for the area, alignment of the supermarket and the adjoining walkway enhance views of the historic ‘shot tower’, adding to its role as a landmark. Nordic Bronze was selected at an early design stage. The building’s designer Matt Brook, Director of architects Broadway Malyan, said: “We wanted to use a material for the expressed frame that would reference the area’s industrial heritage, particularly of metalworking. In addition, the strong, natural colour of the gradually weathering bronze complements the surrounding historic brick and sandstone buildings.”

Floating staircases on Jersey The interior of this multi-million pound house features three matching cantilever staircases with American walnut timber and low iron, glass balustrade running throughout the property. The unique feature of the staircases are the solid walnut box treads. These were manufactured longer than normal so an end piece could be fabricated out of the tread. This technique allowed the wood grain to flow through the glass, creating a seamless design, which was very aesthetically pleasing unlike a typical cross grain design.

Spiral glass feature staircase Glass staircases offer a stylish solution for contemporary properties. Nestled in the heart of London, Parliament View apartments offer uncompromised views across the capital towards the Houses of Parliament. The client was

keen to make a feature of the staircase as well as the design being space efficient. A stainless steel central column was fabricated to support the staircase construction and a stainless steel ribbon stringer to host the low iron glass balustrade. Triple laminated, low iron glass treads with bespoke etching were installed to match the balustrades and allow light to flow, while a simple satin polished, stainless steel handrail was installed to complement the central column, and provide a stylish and safe solution.

Bespoke staircase for award-winnning London office In the heart of London, companies are expanding and developing their offices to fit their high-end brand and create a place not just to work but to also entertain their valued clients. CANAL fabricated two stainless steel, zig-zag stringers, which hosted solid timber walnut treads and 17.5mm low iron, laminated glass balustrade panels. Each panel was installed onto the staircase and the first floor, including a complementary square walnut handrail. This minimalist looking, feature staircase complements the surrounding interior features and allows the soft lighting to flow through the clear glass balustrade creating a spacious feel.

Connecting people and office space in the Shard CANAL was chosen for the feature staircase connecting two floors of office space in the Shard. CANAL achieved the optimum construction by using an open tread, suspended staircase design. The supporting steel framework that was hidden behind the mirrored wall, provided the structure for the steel channel treads to be welded to.To complement the existing office space features, the wide channels were enclosed with beautifully handmade, solid oak, timber box treads, which were stained to match the existing wooden floor. The combination of reflective materials and open space allows the light to cascade down from the windows and flow throughout the contemporary space.

Remmers Remmers UK was appointed to oversee the installation of a flooring system in keeping with the Ferrari brand and suitable for a workshop environment. The existing old concrete floor in the workshop was constructed in several slabs and therefore a high potential for movement existed. The system proposed by Remmers was a flexible 3mm visco elastic PUR resin system with a polyurethane seal coat. The seal coat has integral R11 slip rating and a high degree of chemical resistance.

Energy saving refurb with iQ Therm A listed 19th Century former Schoolhouse overlooking the Dublin mountains was renovated to create a new energy-efficient residential family home. So that the exterior facade of the existing property was not altered in any way, internal insulation was installed to the interior of the stone walls of the original house. Due to the build up of condensation behind conventional insulation when applied to single leaf construction, it became apparent that a “breathable insulation system” would be required. Remmers iQ Therm was chosen as it has the highest level of insulation for given thickness of breathable systems. The original U-value of the wall was approx 3.3W/m2K and was improved to 0.33W/m2K.

A high performance from Remmers To complement its recently refurbished showroom, a new ‘high tech’ workshop has been constructed at Charles Hurst Ferrari, the official Ferrari dealer in Northern Ireland.

Industrial food processing floor solution A new industrial flooring system has been installed to the 2000m2 extension at C&D Foods manufacturing plant in Longford, Ireland. Remmers Crete SL was applied in combination with Remmers PUR Color Top 2KM seal coat to provide a colour stable finish and a subsequent seal coat of Remmers PUR Aqua Top 2KM SG, with the inclusion of a polymer bead to provide an R11 level of slip resistance with a silk gloss floor finish. The system was installed by Larsen Contracts who worked closely with main contractor, Gem Construction to allow the installation of the floor whilst other fitting out activities were also being carried out, optimising the overall program.

Remmers delivers food grade flooring Hygienic food grade flooring was required to the automated filling and packaging lines at the relocated premises of Nature Delivered. Each mezzanine level required a complicated matrix of cross falls within the sub-screed and a hard wearing, hygienic, slipresistant resin floor finish, with integral perimeter coving. Due to the fast track nature of the build process, an epoxy damp-proof membrane was required prior to installation of the resin finishes. Remmers Haftfest Polymer was added to the sand/cement screed to improve its performance characteristics. The screed was laid to falls and subsequently primed with two coats of Epoxy MT100 damp-proof membrane and topped with a nominal 8mm thick layer of Remmers Crete HF hard wearing polyurethane screed.

Kemper System

Odourless roofing solution for Kent schools St Columba’s Catholic Boys’ School in Bexleyheath and Ashford Oaks Primary School in Ashford have both invested in upgrades to their roofs, installed by specialist roofing contractor, Capital Roofing. At St Columba’s, the project involved overlaying the entire existing roof surface with a warm roof build up from Kemper System to improve the building’s thermal performance and provide effective waterproofing. At Ashford Oaks Primary School, Kemper System’s solvent free Kemperol 2K-PUR provided significant advantages because it is both odourless and suitable for overlay directly onto the existing single ply surface. Following installation of the Kemperol 2K-PUR, maintenance walkways were added, with Capital Roofing using Kemper System’s TC resin and quartz aggregates, followed by a sealant.

Castle applies Kemperol to Turret Library Roof Kemper System has helped to protect books and interior finishes at the historic Bolton School following a refurbishment of the Turret Library Roof. Castle Roofing used Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 cold applied waterproofing system to

overlay the existing roof and provide a suitable colour match to the lead flashings of the traditional building. Castle Roofing stripped out the existing lead flashings on all four sides of the 100m2 roof area and ground out a 40mm deep chase on each of the four sandstone walls that form the perimeter of the Turret Library roof. The installation team then cleaned the existing substrate and carried out patch repairs where the substrate was blistered or water ingress had occurred before applying Kemper System’s D Primer and Kemperol V210.

Kemperol protects Tectons at Dudley Zoo Among the Grade I and Grade II* Tecton structures that have so far been refurbished at Dudley Zoological Gardens, under the watchful eye of English Heritage, are the entrance canopy and ticket kiosks, concession stands, and the impressive ‘Bear Ravine’ which was once used to allow zoo visitors to view the bears from above at close range. One of the main priorities of the refurbishment programme is to protect the structures from water and environmental damage due to rainfall, which led to specification of Kemper System’s Kemperol cold liquidapplied waterproofing systems. The Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing system was ideal as it is impervious to standing water and able to follow the exact contours of each curve.

Protecting Liverpool’s Royal Liver Building The Grade I listed Royal Liver Building is one of the Liverpool’s ‘Three Graces’ and an iconic waterfront landmark. With Cunard, one of Liverpool’s greatest companies, celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, it was time to refurbish the distinctive cupolas of one of its most famous buildings in the world in time for a celebratory flotilla. Roofing contractor, K Pendlebury & Sons selected the Kemperol 1K-PUR systems following trials carried out prior to commencing the project to ascertain the best approach to delivering the project with the level of finish required by the building’s management company, CBRE, and English Heritage while managing the time constraints of the project.

Barnsley Town Hall keeps heritage intact When Barnsley Council commissioned a project to refurbish the roof of its Town Hall, Kemper System not only had to ensure that the roof was upgraded successfully without any disruption to

council services but also had to complete the scheme without any impact on the rest of the building. To address these challenges, the Stratex warm roof system with Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing membrane was specified by Kemper System. Kemperol 2K-PUR is solvent-free and odourless; ideal for use on occupied buildings where the odours from solvent based or so called low-odour products can be disruptive.

Kemper System roof will mature at Cheadle Care Home Residents at a new care home in Cheadle, Cheshire, will be able to enjoy the greenery of the building’s parkland setting on their roof terraces thanks to a green roof installation from Kemper System. The contemporary building features a flat roof and a balcony at first floor level and Kemper System’s solvent free Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquid-applied system has been used to provide the waterproofing membrane for all areas of the roof and balconies. The root-resistant and U/V stable waterproofing system also forms an integral part of the green roof build up installed on selected areas of the roof terraces as a feature that connects the new development with its natural surroundings.

Low energy SIPs house ‘riding’ on Thermoblock A regional developer specialising in very low energy and PassivHaus projects is making use of the Thermoblock structural insulation for the first time as part of a bespoke SIPs construction for a client in the East Riding of Yorkshire. On its most recent project near York, RM Developments is creating a spacious two-storey family home where instead of blockwork or timber frame, the main loadbearing walls are all formed of SIPs – Structural Insulated Panels. These are located on top of the beam and block oversite whose ends are carried by a course of the Marmox Thermoblocks in order to prevent heat loss at the critical wall/floor junction.

Thermoblock offers the right formula The construction of an advanced new testing facility for motor sport engines in Wales features the use of Marmox Thermoblocks at ground floor level, specified in order to help comply with the latest

edition of Part L to the Building Regulations. The Sports Engine Testing Facility at the University of South Wales Pontrypridd is being built by Willmott Dixon Construction Limited working as main contractor. While the 1000m2, two-storey structure utilises a steel frame, the exterior walls are being raised in cavity blockwork with the Marmox Thermoblocks in two different thicknesses subtending both the inner and outer leaf.

Marmox SoundBoard proves ideal choice A contractor specialising in underfloor heating systems has made extensive use of Marmox SoundBoards on a challenging project to join two Thameside apartments to create an 11-room property. Despite having a modern, framed construction fitted out to a very high standard, there was a significant difference in height between the proposed floor finishes one of timber one of stone and wanting to employ as few wet trades as possible within the occupied building, Gaia opted to utilise two different thicknesses of Marmox SoundBoard across the existing surfaces in order to create a “level playing field” – over which the DEVI electric heating system could be laid.

for wetroom environments. In total Marmox supplied some 1000m2 of Multiboard in the 2500 x 600 (Longboard) and 1250 x 600 (Standard board) options; at 12.5 and 6mm thickness respectively. The joints between the boards were covered using Marmox self-adhesive waterproof tape which enables contractors to tile directly over the top; though in this instance the tilers opted to apply a thin skim of the adhesive across the entire surface.

A development of 25 new properties for a leading social housing provider, located close to Minehead on the Bristol Channel, is making use of Thermoblock from Marmox in order to meet the very stringent airtightness and insulation standards demanded under Passivhaus guidelines. Thermoblock is available in several widths from 100mm upwards to suit different wall constructions and features miniature columns of concrete encapsulated within high performance insulation. They can be used at upper floor levels and other locations as well as around the perimeter to the oversite. Each course of Thermoblock was bedded on mortar and jointed with Marmox Multibond, the manufacturer’s versatile one-part sealant and adhesive.

Five shades of Grey is a real leaf turner When it comes to the latest trend for interior door colours, Vicaima really knows how to excite the imagination. Grey is proving to be a very popular choice with interior designers and developers right now, so it’s only right that with a reputation for innovation, Vicaima has come up with five finishes that seem sure to satisfy the growing desire for shades of Grey. The shades include Dekordor 3D Grey, Grey stained Oak veneer, Dekordor HD Dark Grey, Straight Line veneer Grey and Dekordor SD Grey Walnut. All of which are available as made to order products to individual project requirements.

Vicaima staining makes its mark A major development for Barratt London alongside the River Thames in South West London has been fitted with doors, panelling and skirting from the Vicaima range of stained Oak veneers. For the private apartments, the fit out called for fire and security entrance doors with a complex matching wall panel. This was also carried through to the communal lobby areas and lift surrounds. The finish chosen was a Vicaima white washed Oak stain, which was supplied as part of the Portaro SBD door assembly, together with matching panels and skirting. The social housing was no less luxurious and saw the fitting of a Vicaima Walnut veneered entrance door as part of the Vicaima Secure by Design EasiFit primed frame kit.

Smart Architectural Aluminium

Smart refurbishment for listed art deco building Smart Architectural Aluminium supplied windows and doors from its Alitherm Heritage range for the refurbishment of the Art Deco-style Lanchester Building in Watford, the building being locally listed due both to its historical and its architectural significance. With a design requirement to retain the slim lines of the building’s original steel windows, so closely associated with Art Deco buildings, while at the same time achieving thermal performance and energy efficiency gains which are made possible by modern materials, new windows and commercial doors from Smart’s Alitherm Heritage ranges were specified, all of which were fabricated and installed by one of the company’s specialist partners, Leicesterbased Dotcom Glazing Ltd. Over 70 window assemblies (covering approximately 650m² in total) and 15 door entrance assemblies were installed from Smart’s Alitherm Heritage range, the doors being set in the company’s Smart Wall framing system. The window and door profiles were all finished in white polyester powder coating at Smart’s state-of-the-art paint facility, to match the materials being replaced and to provide a robust, durable and low-maintenance finish.

Heritage windows for Purifier House

Smart Architectural Aluminium’s Alitherm Heritage window system has been installed in Linden Homes’ redevelopment of the Grade II* listed Purifier House, located at the heart of Bristol’s Harbourside area. Linden Homes’ redevelopment has transformed Purifier House into elegant waterfront homes in

what has become one of Bristol’s most vibrant locations. 28 apartments have been created above ground floor retail and cafe space which overlooks the Harbourside and provides a valuable addition to the area. However, due the building’s listed status, the specification of the doors and windows was a crucial element in securing planning approval, with a requirement to mirror the traditional aesthetics of steel fenestration that is typical of heritage buildings. Fabricated and installed by Salisbury Glass, one of Smart’s specialist partners, the selection of Smart’s Alitherm Heritage system provided the perfect solution. The system allowed the building’s iconic arch-headed and bullseye windows to be re-created in modern materials, maintaining its distinctive appearance while delivering the benefits of an aluminium window system.

Year at a Glance refurbishment projects, and with a ‘B’ Window Energy Rating, they deliver the perfect combination of elegant aesthetics and outstanding thermal performance. Alitherm Heritage products are available in either single or dual polyester powder coated finishes.

Seafront development benefits from Smart design

Village hall restoration with Alitherm Heritage windows

Situated at the heart of the picturesque village of Silver End, Essex, an art deco village hall has been completely renovated. The project included the installation of new Alitherm Heritage windows from Smart Architectural Aluminium. Since it was first built in the 1920s, every original and replacement window in Silver End has been of steel manufacture, however, Smart’s Alitherm Heritage range has now been installed to recreate the original 1920s window style using an aluminum system, while at the same time delivering improved thermal performance. Supplied in a polyester powder-coated aged-white finish for this refurbishment, Alitherm Heritage has proven to be an energy efficient alternative to steel windows in a range of projects across the UK, where like-for-like replacements are required for heritage schemes. The system’s thermallybroken windows are ideal for sensitive planning areas and for renovation and

Window and door systems from Smart Architectural Aluminium have been used exclusively throughout the stunning new Abbey Sands development in Torquay. The award-winning scheme occupies a dominant position at the centre of Torquay’s mile long promenade and includes four restaurants, 13 self-catering apartments and 14 residential apartments. Influenced by the modernist and Art Deco styles of early 20th century British seaside architecture, architects Kay Elliott designed a truly elegant and sympathetic building which features curved balconies and glass balustrading to fully exploit the impressive sea views. The new building features a wide range of Smart systems, including the company’s large format Visoglide sliding doors, Smart Wall ground floor treatment and tilt and turn windows, all of which were manufactured and installed by Avdon Bristol Limited, one of Smart’s specialist fabricator and installer partners. Smart’s standard, marine grade polyester powder coated finish was specified for the MC Wall curtain wall system for the ground floor commercial units, as well as for the Visoglide doors for the apartments above, providing long-life protection for the materials and delivering low maintenance requirements.
