The objective was to create a magnificent and adaptable pub-restaurant that fits within the surrounding maritime landscape – they have achieved just that.

eventh generation family brewers Hall & Woodhouse is one of the leading independent brewers in the UK, well-known for its range of award-winning ales brewed under the Badger brand and its network of more than 260 public houses throughout the South of England. Nicknamed locally as the Box on the Docks, the new pub-restaurant has recently been awarded Pub Design of the Year 2013 in the annual CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and English Heritage awards. This is the first year since 2006 that CAMRA and English Heritage have found a new pub worthy of the award.

venue that is completely relevant to its setting whilst at the same time maintaining Hall & Woodhouse core values of great hospitality. The design is notable for its prominent use of 28 shipping containers in its construction, recycled after delivering gifts from China for Christmas 2011. These containers give the building much of its architectural character that is highly appropriate to the marine location and forms a strong visual link with the Dock’s industrial past. They also accommodate many functions such as private dining and meeting rooms, customer toilets, storage areas and staff accommodation that are ideally suited to the cellular nature of containers. Portishead Quays operated as commercial docks for many years so the architects felt that it provided a perfect setting for a development made with shipping containers to reflect the idea of travel by sea. other graphics designed for external walls and used within the rooms and corridors. However, the idea of shipping containers as the form of construction is no architectural whimsy but was generated by the requirement to design a building that could be extended upwards, to accommodate three additional storeys of hotel rooms within a further 108 containers at a later date, once the pub and restaurant had become established. for new and contemporary design within the pub sector and it is CAMRA’s hope that the award will encourage others to once again build new pubs that contribute architecturally, as well as socially and economically, to the civic life of their communities.

Efficient installation During construction of Hall & Woodhouse Portishead, the shipping units arrived fully insulated, decorated and fitted out, so were ready for stacking. As the structure is self-supporting it needed no additional framework and the site’s plug-in-and-go services made for a simple build and a rapid installation. Powder-coated metallic finishes have proven to give a very attractive finish to this type of cladding. Light grey washes give a subtle articulation to the building and allow for attractive branding to be incorporated. The membrane canopy to the Chandlery Square offers a nautical element which covers a timber deck. This clearly helps to define the public/private space.

Ground source heat pumps, solar thermal panels, photo-voltaic panels and rainwater harvesting as well as other technologies help the building to be energy efficient. Colin Wood, Project Manager at Hall & Woodhouse, comments: “It is in our psyche to do things a little differently to the mainstream in meeting the needs of our guests. The design is a tribute to an ambitious Hall & Woodhouse prepared to back this wonderful, innovative design by Mackenzie Wheeler. One of the most pleasing aspects is how supportive the local community has been. Initially, I had loads of calls and emails pleading for a pub-restaurant, so I shared the early designs and there wasn’t a negative voice among them. That helped our confidence to proceed, and now that it has come to fruition, I’m delighted to say that many have adopted Hall & Woodhouse Portishead as their own. I now see familiar faces on my visits, which is great.” David Hoare, Retail Director at Hall & Woodhouse adds: “Constructing this magnificent pub-restaurant is the

Hall & Woodhouse is a family owned brewery, with great hospitality at its core, but with the vision and guidance of Mackenzie Wheeler we have really pushed the boundaries to create a destination venue that is completely relevant to its setting. Individual concept

“To see this project come to life was a great day for all the team. Thanks to the use of the recycled containers, the building looks incredible but, as with all our barrestaurants, Hall & Woodhouse Portishead is about more than just style. The menu is a British interpretation of the bistro and brasserie concept, with dishes ranging from our much loved and award-winning steak and Tanglefoot ale pie to our cheddar glazed smoked haddock. Also Hall & Woodhouse Portishead is the only place in Portishead that guests can enjoy one of our award.” The construction team was led by Rupert Wheeler of Putney-based architects, Mackenzie Wheeler, and carried out by Contractor, ISG. ISG were and continue to be responsible for a lot of the surrounding development in Portishead, which was a key factor in their selection. Furness Partnership was the structural engineer on the project and Moordown Contractors was the mechanical engineer.

Shaping user experience

Fact file Client: University of East Anglia Architect and Interior Designer: Pick Everard Contractor: Kier

The new Julian Study Centre designed by architects at Pick Everard is the latest and most environmentally advanced of the 57 academic related buildings on the Norwich campus at the University of East Anglia (UEA). Named after Julian of Norwich, one of the first female authors in England and an important medieval mystic, this centre has been designed to be the most energy efficient building on the UEA campus by a factor of 2.

U

EA is an internationally renowned university with around 15,000 students, ranked in the top 1% of HE institutions in the world. Number one university in the UK for student satisfaction in the 2013 Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, its ongoing multi-million pound campus investment programme continues to enhance teaching and research facilities on its distinctive and attractive campus. With a long established reputation for energy efficient buildings and practical solutions to energy consumption, the university has actively pursued a sustainability agenda since the early nineties. Other universities and organisations from the UK and across the world frequently visit the campus to see its low-energy buildings and highly efficient combined heat and power plant which enabled UEA to achieve a 60% reduction in the campus carbon footprint some 20 years ahead of Government targets. With a continuing commitment to reduce its carbon footprint, the university today has many super-efficient buildings, including this latest addition on campus.

Behind its striking, glazed front elevation, complete with pink render, is a 2000m² four storey sustainable building envelope

The new £6.9m academic building is set in over 300 acres of rolling parkland, two miles from Norwich city centre. Behind its striking, glazed front elevation, complete with pink render, is a 2000m² four storey sustainable building envelope, designed within UEA’s strategic masterplan for its single-site campus. While the UEA campus has a history of low energy buildings, this is the first on target to achieve BREEAM Excellent accreditation. Built by Kier using Passivhaus principles, photovoltaic panels, triple glazing, cross laminated

timber wall panels and floors divided by Termodeck slabs, all contribute to the Centre’s impressive environmental credentials. This is the first time, as far as Pick Everard is aware, that a cross laminated timber superstructure has been used with Termodeck. The hollow core floor slabs act as heat exchange elements for transferring heat around the building, allowing for passive cooling in summer and efficient heating in winter, significantly reducing running costs and carbon emissions. Neither UEA nor Pick Everard is stranger to the advantages of the Swedish Termodeck system. It was first used in UEA’s Elizabeth Fry building in 1995 and in the Medicine, Health Policy & Practice building in 2003, and the Thomas Payne Study Centre in 2010, and specified by Pick Everard in the groundbreaking William Smith Building for the British Geological Society and an £80m Meterological Office headquarters near Exeter. Pick Everard’s interior designers were also very involved at the early stages as the vision for clean, aspirational and durable interior spaces developed. The design strategy for the interior was to echo internally the pink featured on the exterior render by using vibrant highlights of pink, purple and contrasting teal blue for walls, floors and furniture.

12

The series of internal spaces created by Pick Everard cater well for a constant ebb and flow of students

To achieve vibrancy and colourcoordination, designers fully specified all the furniture including high stools, high benches and squiggle glass for work spaces, and more comfortable club chairs, more suitable for quieter seating areas. BREEAM A-rated materials, which use a high proportion of recycled content were specified for interior floor finishes and furniture.

Environmental credentials • The centre achieved an air leakage rate of only 2M3/(hr.M2) at 50 Pa. UK Building Regulations’ air leakage rate is 10M3/(hr.M2) at 50 Pa • Cross laminated timber structure locks in thousands of tons of sequestered carbon • Highly insulated with extremely low U values (heat loss) • Triple glazing (part) and low emissivity glass keep U values low • LED lighting and other low energy devices used wherever possible to lower the building’s electrical load • Termodeck helps remove stale air and deliver cooled or warmed fresh air

The facilities in the new centre are as impressive as its sustainability credentials. There are two lecture theatres, both traditional 286-seat and 80-seat Harvard style, seven seminar rooms of varying sizes which can accommodate 18-60 people, a cafe and reception area that seats 60, and break out spaces which include three spacious collaboration areas for up to 40 people. The auditorium is a flexible space that can also be used for events and mini exhibitions during the day or in the evening. The series of internal spaces created by Pick Everard cater well for a constant ebb and flow of students coming in and out of the centre to attend lectures as well as providing informal areas for learners to gather together, to work and collaborate in small groups, or meet one to one. What informed the architectural design for the interior of the building was carrying out student flow analysis,

Architect Paul Darlow, Eastern Region Director at Pick Everard comments: “The most important challenge for us in the early stages of any project is making sure we get under the skin of what users of the building want and need. We held a number of meetings with UEA user groups where we presented ideas, gathered feedback from various areas to make sure we met their criteria. “As well as planning the building with learners needs in mind, the designers also take account of the staff who work there all year round and who also have a very important role in shaping the workplace. Working behind the scenes, facilities teams have a vital role – they require all the building services – for heating, cooling and lighting – to be easily accessible as well as being properly integrated into the architecture from the start.” Paul Darlow continues: “For this centre,

we paid particular attention to the fine detail when it came to designing the specialist spaces. In a lecture theatre, for example, our role is to ensure that the acoustics are right and that the viewing distance is comfortable for everyone and all the specific criteria are met, especially when the site is a constrained one. Paying attention to the detail at the design stage means getting it right first time so that the building works well. “As architects, our aim was to design a building that would make a statement but also connect with the architectural heritage and reputation of the UEA campus. Our brief was to create spaces where students would enjoy spending time and learning; where the quality of the experience, affected by colours, the materials used, the views out into the landscape, plenty of daylight, would be a positive one. We’re confident that this new centre holds its own against the many fine buildings on the UEA campus, designed by prominent architects that have won architectural awards in the past. We’re delighted to see the centre open.” Martin Lovatt, Project Administrator at UEA, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming students into the completed Julian Study Centre for lectures. The unique building was designed to meet the need for additional first class teaching and learning facilities on campus and it will be a valuable resource for students and staff.”

Photovoltaic panels, triple glazing, cross laminated timber wall panels and floors divided by Termodeck slabs, all contribute to the centre’s impressive environmental credentials

mapping student traffic moving around the building, especially at peak times. So rather than having linear corridors, the curve of the building has been replicated inside, creating a more positive, fluid flow around the building and into the collaboration zones. The design and planning stages were completed in six months with tendering and enablement in four, followed by 13 months for construction – a programme of 23 months from feasibility to occupation.

Voice of the Industry Collaborative supply chain partnerships are key to the success of every sustainable construction site

efficiently will significantly reduce costs as well as carbon. The Infrastructure Carbon Review (ICR), developed by the British Treasury, the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills and the Green Construction Board (GCB), calls for clients to embed carbon reduction into procurement of infrastructure. At Balfour Beatty, carbon reduction is a key to driving down costs, reducing environmental impacts and a prerequisite for winning work.

Effective leadership

For Balfour Beatty, effective carbon management makes business sense and is already part of its wider sustainability strategy. The company is one of nine contractors who have signed a new joint initiative to reduce carbon in infrastructure. Here Dr Paul Toyne, Balfour Beatty Sustainability Director talks to FC&A about the importance of implementing this strategy across the whole supply chain. 14

Sustainable procurement

Dr Paul Toyne, Director of Sustainability at Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK commented: “We have already applied principles of carbon reduction with success on some of the projects featured in the ICR, including the M25 widening, A21 Stocks Green bypass and the Olympic Aquatics Centre. We want these principles to become commonplace in our business. In 2012, 11% of our infrastructure projects had agreed sustainability outcomes prior to contract signature and this percentage will increase significantly over time.” With sustainability embedded throughout Balfour Beatty, effective leadership, a key recommendation of the ICR, has influenced the company’s commitment to carbon reduction which also forms the core to the company’s strategic plans. From board level down, the company is able to deliver clear and consistent policies on carbon reduction. Collaborative supply chain partnerships are key to the success of every sustainable construction site. By designing in sustainability excellence and early supplier involvement at tender stage Balfour Beatty creates a ‘right first time’ attitude amongst suppliers to minimise wastage,

Balfour Beatty currently has 80 live projects using BIM, including Heathrow Terminal 2B

Voice of the Industry rework, modifications and costly variations and deliver projects that demonstrate excellent value for money. Again, this was a recommendation of the ICR that Balfour Beatty is already committed to and was delivering against.

Innovative solutions The company’s supply chain has a critical role to play in delivering sustainable projects. By continuing to develop and share good practice on responsible procurement across the business Balfour Beatty are able to work with suppliers to deliver innovative, more sustainable solutions. Off-site manufacturing plants – such as Balfour Beatty Engineering Services state-of-the art Modular Systems + facility in Wednesbury – make the process even leaner, saving on average 15% on construction costs when compared to traditional installations. And with the advent of Business Information Modelling (BIM), waste can be massively reduced to deliver better customer value and maintain a competitive edge. Balfour Beatty adopted the strategy to implement BIM on all new projects in 2011 and currently has 80 live projects using BIM and it is also being deployed within 30 bids. This includes a variety of schemes ranging from schools to infrastructure and has included major projects such as Heathrow Terminal 2B,

the Forth Bridge in Scotland and the M25 maintenance programme. The company embeds sustainability across the supply chain and works with strategic and preferred suppliers who do not have their own strategy to create improvement plans that address sustainability risks and opportunities. Balfour Beatty supports the sharing of learning across the supply chain and all suppliers are encouraged to join the Sustainability Supply Chain School and to demonstrate improvement through regular self-assessment. The school has attracted 2300 members from 1300 companies, more than 700 of which are Balfour Beatty suppliers. As part of a commitment to working with clients and supply chain as equal partners in achieving sustainability goals, Balfour Beatty has integrated sustainability and carbon reduction into its procurement policy for the UK confirming its intention to become the industry leader in managing and developing its supply chain. Dr Paul Toyne added: “With two thirds of the value of our projects passed through to our supply chain, sustainable procurement is an important part of our relationship with our supply chain. It is important for our suppliers to understand our sustainability drivers and the requirements that our clients are specifying in their procurement process. If we want to have

a sustainable business, we must procure sustainably and ensure that our supply chain does the same.” On a project level, Connect Plus, a joint venture between Skanska, Balfour Beatty, Atkins and Egis Projects, realised a 115,000t reduction in capital carbon and cut the outturn cost by £53m through building clever and building efficiently during the widening of a 63km length of the M25 motorway. Balfour Beatty welcomes and endorses the ICR report. Cutting carbon is vitally important to long term global economic, social and environmental sustainability. It is a core part of Balfour Beatty’s strategy, which involves working closely with customers to understand their sustainability goals, implementing detailed project sustainability roadmaps on every scheme and delivering on the most challenging industry standards. It is critical that these requirements are shared with the supply chain to ensure that the wealth of innovation and best practice that lies within is used to deliver value for money solutions.

Off-site manufacturing plants make construction processes even leaner

Dr Paul Toyne joined Balfour Beatty’s UK Construction executive leadership team as Sustainability Director in October 2013. Outside of his role at Balfour Beatty, Paul is a London Sustainable Development Commissioner for the Mayor of London, chairing its Quality of Life work. He is also a Policy Commissioner for Birmingham University’s Urban Futures Commission.

Brickwork Brick was chosen as the material for the Carmelite Monastery, for the way it “embodies a sense of timelessness, tradition and practicality”

Restored faith in bricks Brick has been a reliable construction material for centuries and has proven itself time and time again. Not only are they beautiful to look at, clay brick buildings are brought to life with a wonderful mixture of subtle tones and textures, not to mention elegance and humanising character.

W

hilst the material itself is still a first choice for the wider home-buying public, architects are discovering its attractive, versatile characteristics are equally suited to non domestic housing developments. Indeed, the Annual Brick Awards, organised by the Brick Development Association, have seen an increase in the number of entries for religious buildings where brick has been employed as the main cladding material. Recently in the 2013 event, no less than five

projects were submitted. UK Mosque designer Archi Structure, designed the Farooq-E-Azam Mosque in Stockton-on-Tees to replace a previous Mosque formed from two converted terraced houses. The new building follows traditional Islamic Mosque architecture, with dramatic brick facades punctuated by deep arched window panels outlined in contrasting brickwork. The sensitive handling of materials is epitomised in the choice of brickwork and in the patterns, colours and textures that make Farooq-E-Azam Mosque a unique and outstanding landmark for the area. Archi Structure also designed the Abu Bakir Mosque and Islamic Centre in Reading. Again the choice of brickwork and materials was carefully selected to reflect Islamic and local architecture predominant in the area. Peckham Mosque in London, St Michael’s Cathedral in Toronto and Carmelite Monastry in Liverpool also featured in the 2013 Awards, with Carmelite Monastery being voted as the Architect’s Choice Award. The Peckham Mosque Extension and Minaret Project is located in the largely 19th century Holly Grove Conservation Area and set beside a Victorian Board School with high-quality decorative brickwork. minarets with decorative red brick upper stages inspired by Islamic and British Arts and Crafts Architecture. The existing brickwork to the mosque, built circa 1995, was yellow multi stock. For the minaret tops, red bricks with a dense orange-red hue were specified and handmade plain tiles were cut into the profile to vary the rhythm and introduce bands of shadow. The top stage of the minaret is open with brick piers in a contrasting buff tone. St.Michael’s, the oldest Cathedral in Toronto, is currently undergoing a major renewal programme. The original specification referred “the finest picked, white bricks”.These, in combination with a buff Ohio Sandstone give the Cathedral much of its distinctive character. Many of the original brick units had deteriorated and required replacement. A suitable alternative was found in the UK and has been selectively incorporated in the restoration of the tower walls, alongside the original units. Architects Austin – Smith: Lord chose brick as the material for the Carmelite Monastery, for the way it “embodies a sense of timelessness, tradition and practicality”. Flemish bond was used as the background weave to add texture and pattern. The headers are projected on the curved facade of the chapel, creating a rich texture that together with the curved form expresses the modest chapel as the most important building in the community. The colour and texture of the facing brick is soft and rich and equally suitable for internal and external use.The brickwork has been used internally most notably in the chapel and the cloister adding texture and robustness to these spaces.

ith a seating capacity of up to 13,500 the Arena is designed by Architects Populous as a world-class music venue; its unique fan-shaped interior provides clear sight lines to the centre stage area. It can also be arranged to host theatrical performances or a venue for sports events. Additional uses such as business conferences and exhibitions can also be catered for. Opened in July 2013, the First Direct Arena is situated alongside the Leeds inner ring road on a 5.1 acre site at Claypit Lane. Its position benefits from a vibrant city centre location and well established city centre infrastructure. The paved concourse in front of the venue is the main pedestrian route for those entering the building. This large area is drained by a 120 metre run of FASERFIX KS

100 fitted with Class C250 heel-safe ductile iron gratings. There is also a 67 metre run of FASERFIX KS 150 channels fitted with Class E600 heel-safe ductile iron gratings. The high loading capacity was necessary as the concourse is occasionally accessed by delivery and promotional vehicles. A further 146 metres of FASERFIX KS 100 also fitted with Class E600 heel-safe ductile iron gratings were installed in the service yards and hard surfaces surrounding the arena.

Easy access system The FASERFIX KS channels were specified by Arup Limited. BAM, the project’s construction contractor sub-contracted the work to GRKC LLP Groundwork and Formwork specialists who ordered and installed the channel runs. (RFC) which allows for the easy cutting, without breakage, of mitres and the holes required for pipe access points. The channels also feature the company’s SIDE-LOCK ductile iron boltless gratings system which allowed for quick fitting and access for cleaning. For example, 10 metres of covers can be removed in about 90 seconds with just 70 seconds to replace all 20 covers. The FRC perfected by the company in the mid 70s allows FASERFIX channels and trash boxes to have much thinner walls yet are very much stronger when compared with similar non-reinforced concrete products. A standard feature of FASERFIX KS channels are galvanised steel pressings securely moulded on to the top edges of the channel during production, this detail allied with the ductile iron gratings provides exceptional wear resistance and increased load bearing capability. Unlike some other well known makes, FASERFIX components are so strong, even prior to installation they are able to endure the rigours of site work so reducing waste and down time. Colin Taff, Hauraton’s Project Engineer comments about the project: “Over 330 metres of Hauraton drainage channel installed in this project by the groundworkers GRKC LLP. They were please to report no breakages of Hauraton components, even during necessary mitring and hole cutting in the FASERFIX channels.”

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation

Roofing support In a fast-changing construction environment, it’s more important than ever that architects and specifiers keep abreast of developments within the roofing industry. From the BIM supply chain to CompetentRoofer, there is an ever-changing landscape of legislation for roofing, and given the pivotal role that architects and specifiers already play in the design and specification of roofs and roofing materials, it’s imperative that they stay on top.

W

ho better to steer education and best practice on all matters roofing than the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC)? Dating back over 120 years, the UK’s largest roofing trade association today actively ensures that all members offer high standards of workmanship and sound business practice through a strict code of practice and vetting procedure, including site inspections and adhering to the Government-endorsed TrustMark standards. The Federation also offers training services, technical advice, and represents member interests to the wider construction industry and Government. Representing over 70% of the roofing industry by value and currently boasting over 1000 contractors and 165 associate members (manufacturers, merchants and service providers), NFRC strives to ensure that members from the roofing community are at the forefront of all roofing developments. The Federation recently rolled out a roofing campaign to exclusively target the architectural community. Entitled ‘Think roofs – think NFRC’, the campaign primarily aims to raise awareness of the Federation

Fully Supported Metal finalist Norman and Underwood Ltd with The Hive

and to promote its knowledge and expertise to this sector. Ray Horwood CBE, Chief Executive of NFRC explains: “The importance of roofing design in architecture can never be underestimated, and in a fast-changing industry, the time is now right to launch a dedicated campaign that aims to position NFRC as a single source of knowledge and expertise for both architects and specifiers.” Ray continues: “Benefiting both new and established architectural practices, we are confident that our ‘Think roofs – think NFRC’ campaign will establish NFRC as the ‘architects’ answer to roofing’, and ultimately lead to improved best practice across all roofing disciplines.”

Essential guidance But just what exactly can architectural practices gain from working with NFRC? As well as offering comprehensive guidance and advice on all matters relating to roofing, the Federation provides technical assistance, engagement and support, along with access to information covering all disciplines of roofing. Updates on the latest developments in standards and legislation, plus news on NFRC’s ongoing role in parliamentary lobbying and policing is also available. Of course, architects and specifiers can also source help and guidance on specific roofing disciplines at all times. NFRC Chief Executive, Ray Horwood CBE, explains: “Our ‘Think roofs – think NFRC’ campaign was borne out of extensive research which shows that architects are largely unaware of the benefits that NFRC and its members can bring. For example, they

Collaborative approach Working collaboratively not only reduces the stress and hassle for the client throughout the project, ensuring a smoother and often faster process, working closely with roofing contractors also ensures that the project is completed to plan and in line with the detailed specifications. It also ensures that all tenders are like for like and comparable, rather than a mismatch of clarifications. Roofing contractors such as A.E.M.S. Limited firmly extols the virtues of this approach. Chris Whale, Managing Director of A.E.M.S. Limited explains: “By working closely with the architect or project manager, not only are we able to complete the job on time and on budget, we can provide the client with regular progress updates and photographs, thereby setting the tone for excellent working relationships all round.” Chris Whale also stresses the benefits of being NFRC members: “Architects provide a great source of tendering, and being listed on NFRC’s website not only provides contractors with greater visibility, it provides architects with reassurance of our competence and credibility. Once you start delivering jobs to a high standard and on time and budget, architects and project managers also become a great source of repeat tender opportunities.” The role of NFRC in assisting architects and specifiers in roofing design and best practice can never be underestimated. In a fast-paced and ever-changing environment,

NFRC provides an affordable, and easily accessible help and information service that not only helps architects stay on top, it can help them raise their game by enriching their knowledge of all matters roofing. And as Benjamin Franklin one said: “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

need to be aware that CompetentRoofer is now an accredited body for Green Deal and ECO, which enables member companies to become Green Deal and ECO authorised in one simple procedure, saving not only valuable time and money but also further reducing the risk on project management. “Most architects are unaware that it is NFRC who operates CompetentRoofer as part of the Competent Person scheme, and it is yet another example of our ongoing drive to improve standards and professionalism within the roofing industry. Sustainability is a key issue for everyone, and this scheme offers enormous benefits for architects, specifiers and roofing contractors,” says Ray. He adds: “As well as putting architects in touch with contractors, designers and manufacturers – an extensive register of suppliers that they can place their trust in – NFRC provides an overriding umbrella of knowledge and co-operation through the supply chain. Thanks to our extensive resource centre, we can become the first point of call for architects and specifiers when it comes to roofing.” As part of its best practice strategy, NFRC also firmly encourages architects, specifiers and project managers to work in close collaboration with roofing contractors to deliver high quality, consistent and costeffective results on roofing projects. “Architects and project managers are key to the roofing industry.Very often, trust can be a major issue amongst clients, so the involvement of an architect and project manager can provide complete reassurance to both client and roofing contractor

Legal & Business Offsetting can be applied to lower value and more easily replaced habitats

Nature’s value

T

he Times started off the New Year with an interesting and challenging piece following an interview with The Secretary of State, Owen Paterson. The article covers the issue of offsetting ancient woodland to pave way for new developments, and that planting – at a ratio of 100 new trees to 1 ancient tree – is a good example of biodiversity offsetting. As a consultancy that assists many house-builders to secure planning consent for new developments, we deal with infrastructure provision, biodiversity offsetting, and threats to ancient woodland every day, both nationally and internationally. These are the issues at the heart of sustainable development.

sensitive land. Ancient woodland cannot be ‘offset’, as the value of the land lies primarily in its history. These woodlands store genetic material and are ecologically complex systems which, most crucially, include soil and soil organisms, as well

Inaccurate measure Often, the economic need for development and the UK Government’s robust conservation policies do clash, and can give rise to genuinely difficult decisions. This can be the case with major infrastructure projects, such as roads and railways. It is, however, deeply unnecessary that ancient woodlands, or other top conservation sites, should be seen by the government as a constraint to our country’s need for new housing developments. First and foremost, there are ample development sites on less environmentally

as more visible species. Nor can they be measured by the number of trees, as this is a bad measure of their value. Compulsory biodiversity offsetting, as trailed in the Government’s green paper last September, may be a good idea, but it should not be applied to our most valuable and irreplaceable habitats, which include ancient woodlands. Offsetting could, however, be applied to lower value and more easily replaced habitats where a case can be made for sustainable development to meet housing need. As an example, this could apply to some wetland, scrub and grassland habitats, but it is dangerous to generalise as there are many sites where these habitats are high value and difficult, risky or impossible to replace. The Government must apply biodiversity offsetting with great care, and ensure neither policy weaknesses nor oversimplified scoring systems for measuring value and impacts will result in a weakening of overall biodiversity. This is neither necessary for housing delivery nor good for the Government’s environmental credentials. There is a risk that biodiversity offsetting will be seen as a ‘licence to trash’, and the concept will become, unnecessarily, a ‘lose, lose’ for the Government, especially if it fails to recognise the importance of our most valuable habitats. This country is very much able to deliver the required housing provision on land with lower environmental value, and which does not require the loss of a single tree or clod of soil in our vitally important ancient woodlands.

Robert Tregay, Chairman of LDA Design talks to FC&A about biodiversity offsetting, which is at the heart of sustainable development, and the risk it poses to the future of our ancient woodlands.

windows. Additional lighting comes from LEDs, which are powered by an array of solar panels placed on the slanted roof. The building itself was oriented to maximise its solar resources, while windows and doors are recessed and covered with automatic solar shades to minimise direct solar heat gain inside the building. Additionally, a geothermal heat pump and district heating system help heat and cool the building. All the university’s buildings are within a radius of a few hundred metres in the neighbourhood and all form part of the same creative vision. The priority here was really to create the right learning environment within a hugely busy campus. “And it seems we have succeeded,” says Henrik Friis, Deputy Head of the Rector’s Office of the Faculty of Humanities, who has been involved in the construction process since the beginning. “It is clear that people feel welcome here and really want to be here.”

Striking a harmonious balance between ambience and light is incredibly important within the commercial space – it tangibly adds to our sensory experience of a room and naturally evokes from within us an emotive response to the surrounding environment. Here, specialist supplier of sustainable furniture, E-side demonstrates how a striking interior solution has benefitted users and visitors at the University of Copenhagen.

s part of an overall refurbishment at the University of Copenhagen, The Faculty of Humanities has relocated and been uplifted with a series of contemporary and sustainable elements. To soften and illuminate the vast atrium, seven Leaf Lamp birch trees designed by Peter Schmacher have been installed. This practical, yet arty interpretation of nature comprises the trunk of the floor-standing lamp, which is carved from sustainably sourced birch, and the shade, which features a lush array of soft unbleached starched wool leaves. The flourishing foliage has proven to be an excellent sound absorber, softening the room’s echo to create an acoustically peaceful ambience. The design is further complemented by the warm tones emitted from the LEDs. The Faculty of Humanities has relocated

and all departments are now situated in the southern campus of the University. The latest section, the newly-built KUA2, has been built on principles of transparency with a large central atrium and great student facilities. The large atrium area is at the entire university’s heart. Here lies the main entrance, the university’s reception area, the academic bookshop and a real cafe, which has rapidly become a meeting point for all the students. Aside from the natural birch light trees, the university has also invested in a unique series from Danish furniture maker Hay. To achieve carbon neutrality, many green design features were incorporated to reduce energy use and provide a holistic and healthy indoor environment for students and faculty. Design & Desire

Contemporary simplicity At the end of 2013, Kristall Salz Welt’s vision of a contemporary wellbeing facility was realised. Passionate about nature and architecture, the dream was to create a building that was both architecturally striking and also a place that enabled them to live and work in harmony with the natural environment.

A

s architect and a founder of Kristall Salz Welt (Crystal Salt World), Diana Hollacher believes that buildings should help us to connect with nature. This approach, as well as her passion for geometry and ancient building philosophies has been fundamental to her vision for the wellbeing facility. At the core of its creation is the belief that natural crystalline salt has restorative and therapeutic qualities. By using unprocessed salt as a building material, she aims to create a natural healthy environment. Located on the stunning shores of Lake Attersee, Kristall Salz Welt is the first salt therapy centre in Austria. The 12-sided building stands 11 metres tall. Its structure, which includes a striking Solardome Pro skylight at its summit, is an image of a dodekaeder-crystal (polyhedron with 12 faces). On the outside, the building has been clad

unique shape of the building the skylight is 9.3m in diameter, 2.7m in height and is completed with 75 double glazed glass panels. This central space forms the heart of the building and is a tranquil place that benefits from the abundance of natural daylight. The skylight connects people to the outside providing an ever-changing canvas of the sky, whether it’s bright blue, grey and stormy or stars at night. This closeness to the outside is fundamental to the buildings’ design and wellbeing philosophy. With floor to ceiling wall heating, cleverly disguised by colour panels, and under floor heating, guests can

vertically in spruce and larch wood from sustainably managed forests. The wood is free from any glue or other chemicals and provides a layer for the building to breathe and keep the climate inside natural and healthy. The vertical cladding complements the simplicity and solidity of the building’s design and the soft colours of the wood look at home in the natural surroundings. This simple, yet elegant design is echoed inside, where the main materials are also wood and glass. This natural simplicity and no nonsense approach to design have created a 350m2 contemporary building, which not only complements the salt healing ethos, but forms part of it.

experience the outside in the comfort and shelter of this light and airy environment. Reflected in the atrium windows is the unique geodesic design of the Solardome Pro skylight. Both mesmerising and calming, a lattice of triangles can be seen from every angle. It is this pattern of lines and shapes which also gives reassurance of its strength and solidity. The geodesic design, which was developed by Buckminster Fuller in the 1940s, was based on his desire to understand the nature of the universe. By replicating ‘nature’s own co-ordinate system’ which can be found in all spheres – from planets to molecules – and understanding that

gravitational forces are spherical, his work challenged the efficiency of the traditional ‘linear’ architectural structures. He demonstrated that a sphere was the most efficient space as it encloses the most volume and least surface area. A dome therefore has the least surface through which to lose heat and has the unique ability to stand up to potentially damaging wind and snow loading pressures. The Solardome Pro geodesic skylight at Kristall Salz Welt is constructed of almost 200 metres of recycled aluminium and has been designed to European standards. It exceeds both the wind and snow loading requirements in this location (wind – 0.901 KN/m2 and snow – 3.12KN/m2) and can therefore withstand the harshest of Austrian winters. From the naturally ventilated atrium guests go on to enjoy the salt healing rooms, dining area and seminar facility. The wellbeing philosophy can be seen in every element of this building’s design. Internal furnishings in the healing rooms have been made from salt crystal blocks. Walls, floors and seats showcase the natural pink tones of the salt and create a natural environment that has been shown to be beneficial to the human body. With views overlooking Lake Attersee and into the elegant central atrium, the second floor is home to living accommodation. There are two private apartments, which are simply furnished and further reinforce the desire for maximum light and space. The building

Design & Desire to complete the dome structure the internal space has been designed to match the dome shape. Complete with all amenities, including internal wall heating and log burning stove the dome home is an innovative approach to living, and one that invokes a constant feeling of being at one with nature.

The future

Kristall Salz Welt’s vision for the site doesn’t stop here. The dream is to create a complete haven for guests with plans for further dome buildings, specific treatment rooms and additional conference facilities. At the core of any future structures will be Diana’s continuing and unwavering belief that buildings should connect people with the natural and healthy environment in which we live.

has created a harmonious approach to living and working providing very distinct areas, yet all part of the complete vision, both benefiting from natural light and closeness to nature. Diana Hollacher, architect and a founder of Kristall Salz Welt shares her vision: “I wanted a place that was peaceful. It had to be beautiful, have simple lines and provide the perfect restorative environment. The structure needed to be solid and safe, but also be part of the healing process at Kristall Salz Welt – not detracting from, but helping people connect with nature and experience a truly natural healthy environment.” “The geodesic Solardome Pro skylight was central to my vision – providing natural light in abundance, protection from the elements and creating that perfect calm space with views of the sky.”

Floors, Walls & Ceilings

Faking it When time, money and regular access is not available to maintain a living wall adequately, there is an alternative solution that gives equal impact. Martin Leather, Director of Bright Green Walls talks to FC&A about the advantages of specifying a replica green wall.

T

ravel through almost any city these days and you are pretty sure to see a green wall climbing up the side of a hotel or office building. Many public spaces have them too – look at Westfield shopping centre in West London or Snowhill in Birmingham. There’s no doubt that, properly maintained, they look fantastic and tick all the environmental boxes as well – providing a welcome home for insects and birds, insulating buildings and capturing carbon emissions. As the market has developed it has also become popular to install living walls inside, using tropical plants and more and more walls are being installed in residential projects, for private individuals, with this sector now accounting for a substantial share of the market. A living wall needs several things to work properly though and if these aren’t taken into account at the planning stage then the whole thing can become a very costly mistake. Plants need light and water to thrive and whilst some are more shade tolerant than others, if you fit a wall to a north facing side of a basement area then it’s not going to stand much chance of looking good at any time of the year. The integral watering systems also need to be connected to a mains supply and some systems need an electric supply as well – these all take up space, as do the pockets which the plants sit in. All living walls require regular maintenance as no matter how good conditions are, some plants will die and

32

need replacing – this not only costs money, but also means that regular access to the wall will be needed. To mitigate some of these issues there are now some alternative products available which use either replica or preserved plants to create a very similar look to the real thing. Preserved plants can only be used inside – they are real plants which are sustainably grown, then harvested and preserved with glycerine – this leaves them looking and feeling like the real thing, but no longer requiring light or water. The most

For a faster response visit www.fca-magazine.com or use the free reader enquiry card

popular foliages used for interior walls are various types of ferns, some grasses, palm leaves and even moss, which is incredibly tactile and bright green in colour. The quality of some replica foliages has improved dramatically over the last few years, so creating very realistic alternatives to the real thing has become quite possible. Designs can vary from completely naturalistic, random planting to structured swathes of foliage creating patterns, even logos. These walls are usually manufactured on one metre square panels which are easily fixed into place and butted up against each other to create the appearance of one large wall. The interior panels are manufactured onto MDF and can be fire rated if required, whereas the exterior panels are produced on a recycled plastic board. Recent installations in public areas include Trinity Kitchen in Leeds and a new Tesco and Dobbies outlet in King’s Lynn. Purchase costs are much lower per square metre than living walls and maintenance costs are minimal – it’s recommended that interior walls are cleaned (dusted) twice a year whereas exterior ones seem to need it less frequently. It’s also possible to fit them in low light, awkward spaces where the real thing would not survive. So, consider live walls if you have the money, right conditions and maintenance budget, but if not, don’t give up on the idea entirely as there may well be an alternative available.

HVAC Climate control systems are now designed to meet ever-tightening carbon reduction legislation

Thinking outside the box When it comes to energy efficiency, choosing an air conditioning ceiling cassette is an important part of the equation. But Martin Passingham, Product Manager, DX, Daikin UK, argues that high efficiencies need not come at the expense of interior design.

G

one are the days when air conditioning cassettes were simply boxed protrusions from the wall or ceiling. The building and design industry can now incorporate product performance and aesthetic appeal as part of the specification to provide the latest innovative and contemporary interior design. Climate control systems are now designed to meet ever-tightening carbon reduction legislation and ensure that occupants are kept comfortable at all times, while also keeping running costs to a minimum. But when it comes to business environments, whether offices, banks, retail, leisure or healthcare, gone are the days when a ceiling cassette was just a functional unit to be tolerated in an otherwise stylish interior. Selecting the right ceiling cassette is an important part of system design and there is a wide variety available, providing

34

easy to install, flexible, stylish and – most importantly – energy efficient solutions that do not compromise comfort levels.Take, for example, the new Fully Flat Cassette from Daikin. This is the first on the market to fit within a standard European architectural ceiling tile, enabling lights, speakers and sprinklers to be installed in adjacent tiles. To enhance efficiency and to improve comfort levels, ceiling cassettes can incorporate presence sensors so when there is nobody in the room, they will adjust the set point or switch off the unit, avoiding unnecessary cooling or heating. When motion is detected the sensors enable the temperature to be reset to its original setpoint. The use of presence sensors has been shown to improve energy efficiency by up to 27% over a three hour period. Sensors can also direct airflow depending on where people are in the room, ensuring no draughts. A ‘floor’ sensor in a cassette can detect the temperature difference between the floor and the ceiling (the natural temperature distribution in a room means that ceiling areas will be warmest, as hot air rises) and re-direct the airflow to ensure even temperature distribution. The need for flexible space usage often means that temporary or permanent barriers are erected leaving the cassette close to a wall or in a corner with the resulting imbalances in airflow. It is important to choose a cassette that can accommodate changing layouts and individually open or close louvres to restore optimal efficiency and to save on energy costs. Sound levels are also important to a comfortable working environment and

For a faster response visit www.fca-magazine.com or use the free reader enquiry card

should not be overlooked. Some of the quietest models on the market now operate at 25dBA sound pressure levels. Air quality is as important as room temperature in ensuring occupants’ comfort, so a good cassette will also have advanced filters to remove dust particles, ensuring the air is clean. The system should also be able to reduce humidity levels, without varying room temperature.

Installation and maintenance When looking to specify for refurbishment projects in particular, it is important to ensure ease of installation. In the UK and Europe the use of older buildings for

Ceiling cassettes blend with interior decor as they are integrated into the ceiling with only the decoration panel visible

HVAC

commercial purposes is far more common than elsewhere in the world. Often older buildings provide greater challenges for architects, building engineers and installers as the buildings were not originally designed for today’s HVAC systems. Tests have shown that the energy efficiency of a ceiling cassette can be related directly to how often they are cleaned. In some areas, such as shop floors for example, it is not always possible to access and clean cassettes regularly enough for them to operate at the optimum efficiency levels. That is where self-cleaning cassettes offer a significant advantage. The Self Cleaning Roundflow Cassettes save energy and help to meet latest energy efficiency legislation through a daily auto-cleaning function that optimises air flow. The self-cleaning filter cleans itself automatically once a day, resulting in no

accumulation of dust on the indoor unit. This increases efficiency, reducing running and maintenance costs, as well improving comfort levels through consistent air flow distribution.

Seamless integration Once a day, the filter rotates 360° past a special brush that removes accumulated dust. The time of cleaning can be programmed easily with the remote controller. This dust is then sucked to a storage chamber by using the airflow of the indoor fan. It takes about six months to fill this chamber, with a light indicating when the chamber needs to be emptied. Using a supplied extension pipe on a standard vacuum cleaner hose, the dust is removed easily through a small port in the grille. Again, these ceiling cassettes blend with interior decor as they are integrated

They also provide the perfect climate conditions as the various louvers can be individually opened and closed to ensure that heating and cooling are directed to where they are needed. The latest climate control systems offer a wide choice of ceiling cassettes, offering specifiers, installers, building owners and businesses flexible and stylish solutions. They offer high levels of energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption, carbon emissions and energy bills, while delivering optimal comfort levels in hotels, shops, offices and leisure environments. The fully flat cassette from Daikin UK is the first commercial indoor unit developed specifically for the European market. The cassette is designed to blend seamlessly with modern commercial building interiors and is the first to fit completely within a standard European ceiling tile, enabling lights, speakers and sprinklers to be installed in adjoining panels. Architects and building engineers have a choice of ceiling cassettes for specific applications and environment, whether this is part of a small system or larger overall solution. Modern ceiling cassettes have external designs to blend seamlessly with any interior decor and incorporate a host of new innovations to reduce energy use. This includes efficient heat exchangers, fan motors and drain pumps; dust filters and dehumidifiers to ensure air quality; as well as presence sensors and individually controlled flaps to direct air flow and ensure comfort levels are optimised.

Klober to host roofing airtightness demonstrations

For refurbishment projects when thermal performance is being increased under the Green Deal, Dryseal allows the work to be done without need for any structural changes and when

installed in a warm roof configuration can achieve a U-value as low as 0.18w/ m2K. It is suitable for use as a primary waterproofing membrane, including green roof applications. The carbon footprint of the GRP materials in the Dryseal system is only 13 kgCO2em-2 following installation, over 80% less than other traditional materials. Easy to fit, Dryseal is aesthetically attractive and perfect for tackling diverse detailing requirements. It has been recognised as a sensible alternative to metal roofing materials, such as lead, zinc, stainless steel and copper, which means that it can be increasingly found on the roofs of listed buildings. Whether for new build or over-roofing, the system can totally encapsulate the roof with a single material and it is very cost-competitive. Dryseal should only be installed by a Hambleside Danelaw approved contractor to ensure quality workmanship. Details of approved contractors can be found on the website.

Kingsgate House scores UK sustainable first Work has now completed on Kingsgate House, a seven-storey residential project in West London that is the first major construction project in the world to achieve PEFC Project Certification.

Located on the King’s Road, Kingsgate House provides 43 affordable residential units. Designed by Horden Cherry Lee Architects (HCL) and built by main contractor Willmott Dixon, the structure contains 1092m3 of PEFC-certified cross laminated timber (CLT) supplied by KLH UK. The site area is approximately 1345m2 (0.13 hectares) and the striking design is set to be an exemplar sustainable building, achieving Code for Sustainable

Homes Level 4, with the PEFC-certified solid wood acting as a natural, low carbon and renewable alternative to steel and concrete. Stephen Cherry from HCL comments: “Reasons for the use of CLT have to be taken early in the design process to ensure the design evolves as an integrated solution. At Kingsgate we have all worked together at every stage and for this project to be the UK’s first PEFC Project Certified scheme is recognition of this holistic design approach to sustainable construction.” Alun Watkins, who heads up PEFC in the UK adds: “The Project Certification of this major construction project is a global first for PEFC.We are very excited about it and feel the lessons learned and the promotion of the project will be valuable in moving Project Certification forward everywhere. The majority of solid wood solutions such as CLT and glulam are from PEFC-certified origin and schemes using these materials find PEFC Project Certification readily achievable.”

Scott Bader’s CrysticROOF GRP roof waterproofing system for flat or pitched roofs is BBA approved and NHBC accepted

Scott Bader makes Ecobuild debut Exhibiting for the first time at next month’s Ecobuild, global chemical company Scott Bader will be promoting three new recently-developed CrysticROOF products.

S

cott Bader’s in-house R&D team has risen to the challenge of providing building designers, specifiers and contractors with innovative, new technologies in roofing products based on glass-reinforced polyester resin (GRP) and acrylic coatings, which can help the environment and improve health and safety by reducing building energy consumption, reducing volatile emissions and improving fire resistance. CrysticROOF ‘BBA Premier’ is a BBA approved cold-applied GRP roofing system, which has proven itself as a long-lasting, leak-free alternative to traditional roofing materials, such as bitumen, felt and lead, and offers a 25-year guarantee if installed by a certified contractor. During Ecobuild the new energy saving ‘eco’ CrysticROOF coating will be demonstrated on the Scott Bader stand to show an innovative new ‘energy reflecting’ coating, which offers the combined benefits of a choice of roof colour other than white, ranging from yellow to dark grey, while also significantly reducing heat build-up in the roof due to the reflective properties of this new CrysticROOF ‘eco’ coating to the near infra-red (NIR) radiation in natural sunlight. According to independent experts, 53% of the sun’s heating effect is due to the infrared energy, so by applying the NIR reflective CrysticROOF ‘eco’ coating product on a flat or pitched roof, it will help to significantly reduce the daytime surface temperature of the roof. The advantage of a cooler roof for any air-conditioned, climate controlled building is a decrease in energy consumption and related CO2, emissions, which could

44

reduce by as much as 52% annually. As well as reducing the running costs and the carbon footprint of a building, there are added benefits for both the design and maintenance of a building roof by having a less extreme temperature change cycle over a 24hr period, resulting in less thermal warping and thermal stress.

Immediate application The new flexible grade CrysticROOF system being promoted at Ecobuild offers installers a fire-rated cold applied liquid system which can be applied immediately under damp, wet conditions to a base coat and still be tack free in less than three hours. The flexible system works in a wide range of summer and winter outdoor temperatures and variety of surfaces. According to Scott

Bader, providing a suitable primer is correctly applied, it can be used to cover a variety of common bitumen or cement-based flat roofing substrates, as well as with some proprietary foam or foil roofing products. This new flexible CrysticROOF topcoat uses a ‘next generation’ polyurethane (PU) based non-gassing GRP resin system which has very low VOC emissions, offering improved environmental, health and safety (EHS) for installers. Scott Bader has developed a new version of CrysticROOF topcoat, which is a specially formulated fire resistant (FR) isophthalic topcoat. This new FR topcoat will become part of the standard CrysticROOF system. By offering a FR rated GRP flat roof system as standard, Scott Bader aims to help customers and contractors make the right choice and avoid the risk of not meeting fire safety legislation and building regulations by opting to install CrysticROOF, confident that it is an approved and tested FR roof system which meets BS476 Part 3, yet still provides the long term UV resistance and weathering performance. All CrysticROOF products are manufactured in Scott Bader’s UK plant in Northamptonshire to ISO 9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards and procedures. The full range of CrysticROOF products, trims and ancillaries, is stocked exclusively in the UK by SIG Roofing Supplies, which supplies roofing installers via local SIG outlets. Scott Bader is an associate member of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors.

Floors, Walls & Ceilings Carpet tiles create zoned areas, giving the effect of sandy islands in a large blue ocean

Forbo brings the outdoors in In the Croxteth district of Liverpool, a variety of flooring products drawn from Forbo’s integrated portfolio has helped to create a stimulating and inspiring environment at a new school building, custom-designed to provide pupils with high quality facilities and fun spaces for learning.

M

artin Shutt, Architect at 2020 Liverpool, made the flooring a key design element at the new Croxteth Community Primary School, built to replace the original building which had been demolished.

“The main design objective for the flooring was to bring the outdoor environment inside, merging internal and external boundaries and bringing an organic and natural feel to the space,” he said. “We used carpet tiles to create zoned

areas, giving the effect of sandy islands in a large blue ocean. This created pleasing aesthetics but has also provided predetermined areas where children can sit, read and participate in group activities.” Martin used Forbo’s Tessera Teviot carpet tiles in Deep Ocean, Pine and Soap Stone colourways to achieve this. Each classroom has a wash area and Martin needed flooring that would provide slip resistance and easy cleaning in case of spills. He chose Forbo’s Surestep Original vinyl as it provides an attractive contrast with the carpet tiles, has an R10 slip resistance rating and benefits from a PUR pearl finish, making the floorcovering easy to maintain. Forbo’s Coral Duo entrance system, which can capture up to 94% of all walked in moisture and dirt, was installed at the various entrances areas throughout the school. Completing the project, Forbo’s Eternal Wood vinyl and Eternal Stone vinyl have been installed in the school hall and reception. Providing variety, choice and flexibility, Forbo’s colour coordinated modular offering makes it easier to mix and match multiple sizes, styles and formats of tiles across vinyl, linoleum, textiles, flocked and entrance systems, offering complete design freedom for multiple application areas within one project Martin concluded: “Forbo’s large integrated product offering and wide variety of design choices meant we were able to source all the floor coverings for the project from just one supplier, which ultimately made the procurement process easier and quicker, as well as being a more cost effective solution.”

Strength in structural panels Engineered wood products are developed to fulfill specific requirements of different industrial sectors. Among these, perhaps the most demanding specification is that of structural use. To meet these heavy-duty standards, FINSA has created SuperPan TECH P5 and P6, unique and exclusive products, protected by patent nr. 99966972.4. These high performance boards are suitable for a wide range of structural applications. Just like the other members of the SuperPan product family, they combine two outer layers of MDF with a particleboard core.

The main advantages of SuperPan TECH are: • High resistance Its improved bending strength coupled with its high modulus of elasticity make it the right product for the most demanding load situations.

• Surface quality SuperPan’s smooth and compact surface is ideal for coating with vinyl, linoleum, ceramics or epoxy paints. At the same time, the compact layer of the wood fibre on the faces provides greater impact resistance, preventing from surface damages and defects. • Complete range Plain and coated boards specially developed for these applications, with the most suitable formats for the building industry, for a maximum optimisation of the material. • Non-slip and design Non-slip finishes provide extra protection against slipping and a range of decorative

colors with the reverse side in white melamine, providing a better reflection of light, which is especially important for industrial interior spaces. FINSA has carried out extensive testings at the University of Edinburgh and at AITIM (Spain) which showed that SuperPan Tech P5 and P6 clearly outperform competitive products available in the market. In this way, this unique product is becoming a milestone for structural panels for both its performance and its cost/efficiency ratio.

YBS gets creative with Interface Yorkshire Building Society has specified tiles from global carpet manufacturer, Interface, for its new offices in Leeds. As the company branding and colour schemes had not been chosen at the time of the flooring specification, the company required a neutral palette to future-proof the design. Products from Urban Retreat Three were used in contrasting shades of Granite to add a creative yet practical dimension to the open plan office space through the use of zoning. The carpet tiles were installed in monolithic and non-directional methods to demarcate areas of the office, without the need for unnecessary furniture or partitions. *

Skyfold Zenith partition delivers unique advantages Well recognised for delivering innovative partitioning solutions, Style is delighted to announce the addition of the unique Zenith Skyfold to the range of vertical-rising moveable walls for which it is the sole UK supplier. All Skyfold partitions neatly unfold from the ceiling cavity at the touch of a button but the Zenith is designed for locations where minimal disruption to the furniture in a room is crucial, or where space is particularly limited. Rather than descending as concertinaed panels, the Zenith slides automatically into place almost entirely as flat, vertical panels.

This extremely thin path of travel totally negates the need to move tables and chairs in order to create private areas with an exceptional acoustic barrier of up to 59dB Rw – a new industry record for partitioning walls. “We are extremely excited by this addition to the Skyfold range,” enthuses Julian Sargent, Group MD of Style partitions.

“The Zenith really is an incredible system because it divides an area so quickly and with virtually zero disruption. It’s ideal for meeting rooms, busy lecture theatres, crowded conference halls and other areas where the space needs dividing for multi-functional use. “The groundbreaking acoustic performance of up to 59dB Rw makes this the most innovative and complete moveable wall system on the market.”

GPDA sponsors waste debate A debate on waste in construction, sponsored by The Gypsum Products Development Association, sees space and time as key challenges to reducing waste, particularly plasterboard. The event, hosted by the Federation of Plastering and Drywall Contractors, gave representatives from across the industry an opportunity to air their views. The debate’s chairman, Professor Rudi Klein of the Specialist Engineering Contractors Group, introduced the role of reducing waste in achieving the Government’s target of a 25% cut in construction costs. In considering this point, the time and cost pressures placed on contractors were discussed as the real enemies of waste, as all contracts are pushing to the finishing line. However, it was generally agreed that planning construction phases and keeping sites tidy can help generate less waste through avoiding damages and offcuts. Whilst plasterboard is seen as a cheap commodity product, lots of ‘cheap’ waste soon adds up and it was suggested that more thought should be given to the use and shapes of materials at the design stage. Bespoke boards are available, subject to lead time, and can significantly reduce waste, however, this needs engagement

AVOID THIS! ELIMINATE SLIPPERY FLOORS!

early in the design stage as today’s shorter procurement times limit the scope during construction. Design and planning have a huge impact on waste creation and waste will become an even bigger issue in the quest for higher BREEAM ratings. Plasterboard manufacturers are already achieving zero waste to landfill from manufacturing, but this is more difficult up the line because of so many dynamics in the supply chain. In summary, the debate’s over-riding message was clear: considerate and carefully planned use of materials on site can bring about savings and for contractors, less wasted board means less wasted money.

Drainage & Landscaping Vulcathene sees clearly with product expansion Vulcathene, the specialist chemical drainage system from Durapipe UK, is expanding its portfolio to include the introduction of a new sight glass product to aid continuous monitoring and inspection of a pipework system. The new Vulcathene sight glass is manufactured from borosilicate glass and is supplied with Vulcathene mechanical couplings for connection to Vulcathene pipe in sizes 38 and 51mm. The ability to quickly identify build up is particularly important within chemical drainage systems as a build up of aggressive chemicals or acids could potentially cause damage to the system. Early identification of potential blockages will also significantly reduce repair and maintenance requirements.

Historic shoe factory gets complete protection Northampton has a long history as a world-leading centre for the manufacture of craftsmen made shoes, and a striking building in the centre of the town with a long-standing pedigree in the industry has been given a new lease of life for the 21st century with Sandtex Trade products. A range of trim products from Sandtex Trade has offered complete protection for the wood and metal surfaces at the Crockett & Jones factory – in-keeping with the prestigious brand and its heritage. Founded in the town in 1879, the company has made the finest English shoes and boots since 1897 at its Perry Street factory, a striking red brick building in the heart of the shoe-making district. In 1910, a five storey wing was built onto this factory – believed to be the first all-steel structured building in Northampton. In 1935 another building was created on the Perry Street site, again with a light, airy feel. As a result of the building’s design, it features a large number of metal and

Rehau GENEO chosen for Silver Active project

Architects Anderson Bell and Christie chose Rehau’s Passivhaus certified GENEO window system in a new residential development for North Ayrshire Council which was required to meet a Silver Active Level of sustainability as defined by the Scottish Building Regulations, Section 7. The specification was laid down by the council for 12 new bungalows built in Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae. In response, Anderson Bell and Christie adopted a ‘fabric first’ approach and focused on optimising the thermal performance of the insulation, cladding and windows in the buildings, choosing Rehau GENEO because the system could offer U-Values as low as 0.68 W/m²K. Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms

The stylish answer to shower safety In response to market demand, Mira Showers – a market-leading manufacturer of showers and showering accessories – has developed an anti-slip version of its ever-popular Flight Low shower tray, the Flight Safe. Meeting and exceeding the highest standards of slip resistance, this tray incorporates two integral finishes – Mira Safe anti-slip and the anti-bacterial BioCote – that will never wear or peel off or wash away so the tray will retain its anti-slip and anti-bacterial properties for its whole life. Unlike other anti-slip finishes, Flight Safe is intended for the vulnerable user but with a subtle design – there are no raised areas or stick-on roundels, for instance. And while the look is very understated, the Flight Safe exceeded the most stringent anti-slip test – Class C DIN

51097 – when independently certified. This test consists of making the tray slippery with soap and water and then inclining the tray until the barefoot subject slips off. To gain Class C, the subject must remain standing when the tray is at an angle of 24° but, with Flight Safe, the subject was still standing when the tray was tilting at 30°. This test not only shows how well the tray performs but also provides third party certification that will deter any potential litigation. Durable and easy to maintain, Mira Flight Safe is made from acrylic resin stone so it resists chipping and scratches to retain

its integrity throughout its life while being also very light – it is 20% lighter than equivalent products made from acrylic capped resin stone. To simplify installation, Mira provides an optional riser kit where the tray is to be installed on a solid floor that has strong ‘push-fit’ legs and the option of integral upstand variants that will ensure a watertight fit.

As the demand for floor-level showers in bathroom renovations continues to grow, wedi once again leads the way in offering first class proven, reliable and practical system solutions that will continue to perform over time. Providing a total installation height of only 70mm, wedi Fundo Plano Linea is an extension to the successful wedi Fundo range of floor-level showers. In many renovation projects design and installation options are restricted to running all drainage and water services ‘surface mounted’ above the existing finished floor level. Such cases can present problems in the consequential excessive increase in height to internal floor levels. *

Changing Places in 3D

The new Axor ShowerProducts, designed by Swedish design trio Front, draws attention to the hidden aesthetics of technology in an elegant way, turning pipes, joints, valves and funnels into charming industrial-style design objects. For example, a simple funnel becomes a well-proportioned showerhead. A total of five Axor products for the shower zone bear the signature of Front: a hand shower, a shower set consisting of a hand shower, a wall bar and a shower hose, an overhead shower as a ceiling- or wall-mounted version with two different spray types, and a showerpipe consisting of a thermostat, a height-adjustable overhead shower and a hand shower.

Helping clients visualise a facilities project is simplified with a new 3D CAD download. The Changing Places accessible, assisted toilet 3D CAD download, available only at www.clos-omat.com, has been purpose-developed to help designers plan building layouts and visualise how the room differs from a standard (Document M type) wheelchairaccessible toilet, the range of equipment therein, and how it all integrates to enable anyone who needs the help of a carer to go to the toilet when away from home. Roofing, Cladding & Insulation

Lathams looks to the future Accoya – the modified, highly durable and dimensionally stable certified softwood – is now available from all 10 of James Latham’s nationwide distribution sites. Accoya wood is a perfect solution for exterior cladding, siding and facades where aesthetics, less frequent maintenance, dimensional stability, durability and insulation value are key factors. Accoya wood can be used to create simple or complex designs with a choice of coating finishes, delivering typically improved lifetimes. It can be opaque coated or, for those

wishing to enjoy the natural look of wood, translucent coated. Plus, with a 50-year guarantee when used externally and 25-years when used

in the ground, Accoya’s low maintenance requirements add to its ‘whole life’ cost effectiveness and environmental credentials and this versatility makes it ideal for use in residential, commercial and industrial applications. Paul Leach, James Latham’s Group Product Sales & Development Manager for Accoya says: “Accoya wood is fast becoming the material of choice for architects, contractors and joiners for many exterior applications which were once only feasible with nonsustainable material. In addition to cladding, sidings and facades, Accoya is also ideal for windows, doors and decking. “As well as our established customer base who are now seeing the benefits of Accoya for cladding and other exterior projects, we’ve also seen it open up opportunities with new customers as demand for sustainably modified products continues to grow.” He adds: “Accoya is a fantastic material for external specification and fits perfectly with our already established range of sustainable products.”

Firestone receives further certification

Zinc approved in sensitive planning area For the new £2.5m clubhouse and restaurant of Close House hotel and golf club in Heddon-on-the-Wall, Architects Space Group specified a low pitch VMZINC standing seam roof. ‘No.19’, a 1000m2 contemporary building, was given a pre-weathered QUARTZ-ZINC roof as part of a design which posed significant planning issues. It is within designated green belt and adjacent to the Grade II-listed Close House Mansion so zinc was chosen for use with natural stone walls. The system is ideal for compact, warm roof construction using either rigid or cellular glass insulation on straight or curved roofs. It offers exceptional colour retention and is ideal for complex detailing. ( *

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation Imaginative regeneration project uses Marley Eternit’s Thrutone

Copper at the seaside Wilkinson Eyre Architects’ recently completed Splashpoint Leisure Centre in Worthing is clad in Nordic Standard copper from Aurubis Architectural and red cedar – a palette of self-finished, natural materials selected to age gracefully and withstand the aggressive conditions of its unique maritime location. Two different forms of copper have been used to create variation along the length of the western façade: the primary wall and roof surfaces use flat cladding panels and projected windows use a perforated rain screen system. Copper roofs and facades were installed by Kingsley Roofing.

Marley Eternit’s Thrutone fibre cement slates have been used to create a distinctive roof aesthetic for an imaginatively designed regeneration project in Mill Hill, North London. Developers Countryside Properties and Annington Homes specified the Marley Eternit Thrutone fibre cement slates to complement the distinctive sandstone, terracotta brick and cedar cladding used on the houses, as well as to blend in with the surrounding countryside. As part of Marley Eternit’s fibre cement range,Thrutone boasts industry leading sustainability credentials, including a low carbon footprint of just 13 CO2e/m2 and the ability to achieve the lowest environmental rating (A+) in the BRE Green Guide. *

Smart payments with communal heating scheme At Evinox, the company understands the importance of integrating the most suitable energy metering, monitoring and billing system in a communal heating scheme to ensure the right solution is provided for residents and the building owner or operator. With that in mind, Evinox is excited to announce that its PaySmart technology is now available as a retro-fit system that can be installed in connection with any other manufacturer’s heat interface units or communal heating system. Already widely used in ModuSat communal heating systems for private and social housing schemes, Evinox PaySmart technology provides a facility for residents to pay for their energy in advance, making budgeting easier.

Rinnai BMS interface for hot water on demand Industry-leading manufacturer Rinnai is introducing new technology that seamlessly integrates its continuous flow hot water systems into BMS protocols. The launch of smart controls for its award-winning Infinity condensing range brings the prospect of higher energy efficiencies for commercial buildings. The controller allows the end user to remotely monitor and change system temperatures and also to monitor and adjust burners for maximum efficiencies. In effect, the controls monitor gas usage to dictate business periods and energy savings. Rinnai units modulate the gas supply in relation to the amount of heat input required to optimise gas usage meaning high energy efficiency is delivered at all times. The Evinox PaySmart debt free metering solution enables residents to be in control of their own energy bills by pre-paying and therefore removing any burden of building up unpaid bills or debt. This system also takes away the collection of money by the Managing Agent or Housing Association and provides residents with flexibility and choice over how they pay for their heating and hot water. Unlike traditional pre-payment systems, the process of adding energy credit to the PaySmart system is automated so there is no requirement for the resident to insert a card for activation. Residents can purchase their energy using the following convenient payment methods: at a local Payzone outlet, by Monthly Direct Debit or Standing Order, online using our Residents Website 24hrs a day or over the telephone. 8 *

Luxury superyacht builder turns to Asset Asset International, a leading manufacturer of Weholite HDPE plastic sustainable drainage solutions moves into the ventilation sector, with the provision of a network of HDPE pipes to service the new extension at the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, Cornwall. Pendennis, one of the world’s leading superyacht builders, commenced a major development of its Falmouth location, in order to respond to an increased number of refit enquiries as well as provide facilities for larger 60m+ vessels.

In order to facilitate the extension, Pendennis appointed Midas as the main contractor to undertake the required works. Asset was appointed by SCB Groundworks, a sub contractor on the project.

Asset was specifically involved in providing a large network of underground pipes in order to service an air tight duct, designed to carry air from the plant room to vast blowers within the workshop. These giant blowers help to dry the fresh paint on the hulls of the superyachts built or refitted at the shipyard. Asset supplied 750m of 1350mm diameter Weholite, along with prefabricated access shafts. Paul O’Regan at Asset International, said: “Weholite lends itself to underground air duct systems such as the one installed at Pendennis Shipyard, due to its versatility and ability to be fabricated easily into complex arrangements. This is essential when the air duct needs to navigate around a multitude of other services that need to be installed.” Andy Mansell, Quantity Surveyor for SCB Groundworks, commented: “After looking at several different options Weholite proved to be the most suitable solution and offered both programming and economical advantages.”

Lindapter specified for monumental project

High Clamping Force mechanism that produces three times the clamping force when compared to the same sized product without the mechanism.

Lindapter’s High Clamping Force (HCF) Hollo-Bolt was recently used to connect structural glass fins to the primary steelwork of the new Stonehenge Visitor Centre. The fins in turn support the walls of the glass box structure; one of the centre’s two ‘pods’, covered by an undulating roof supported by 211 steel beams. A range of size M16 and M20 HolloBolts were specified by the Designers & Engineers of the structural glazing,Vitrine Systems, to connect the glass fins to the RHS perimeter ring beams supporting the transparent glass panels that formed the exterior of the ‘pod’ housing the Visitor Centre’s cafe and shop. The Hollo-Bolt connections comfortably fulfilled all load requirements, which ranged from 20kN to 30kN depending on the connection location. The discreet and easy to install HolloBolt provided the ideal connection method for this project where on-site access limitations posed a potential problem.

Sentinel launches new and improved X100 Inhibitor Water treatment specialist Sentinel has launched its new improved strength formula X100 Inhibitor. The new X100 inhibitor still provides the same benefits it has always delivered – outstanding scale and corrosion protection for all system metals, in tandem with robust stabilisation of system water pH, which together ensure optimum boiler protection. It also helps to prevent boiler noise, pin-holing and the formation of hydrogen gas in the system. Most importantly, it is still recommended by leading boiler manufacturers who recognise the significant benefits that the use of Sentinel X100 Inhibitor offers to their boilers. The closed RHS steel made Hollo-Bolts the preferred connection method as they offered a reliable and high strength connection with independently approved safe working loads that could be installed using just handtools; a range of benefits that could not be matched by any alternative connection method. The £27m Stonehenge Visitors Centre development was completed on time and on budget and opened to visitors in December 2013. The completed structure provides a striking gateway to the monument site for the 900,000 people who visit Stonehenge each year. The Hollo-Bolt HCF features a patented
