rain stations, airports and cruise terminals experience the highest level of footfall than any other public building.Trudged by commuters and sauntered by globetrotters, these central hubs are the fulcrum of travel in every town, city and capital; both for their architectural intrigue and, equally, for their utilitarian intent.The visual appeal of these structures is crucial to the infrastructure of all towns and cities across all quarters of the globe. Two recent public transit projects that boast compelling aesthetics have been welcomed by Canadians in the capital of the region of Ontario. Designed by British Architect,Will Alsop – whose architectural practice, aLL Design, is known all too well by Torontonians for its avant-garde designs – the Pioneer Village and Finch West stations comprise two of six new stations in the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension project.The two brightly-coloured, eye-catching edifices have been designed to inject a touch of “cheer” and “joy” into the daily commuter’s everyday routine, as Alsop explains:“I have to assume that on one of those really cold, miserable January mornings... there will be people down there travelling to a job that they’d probably rather not do.What I want them to feel is a little bit of cheer, a little bit of joy.” To read up more on the two recent additions to Toronto’s already impressive skyline, turn to page 12. More architects than ever pay their retention fee on time 38,783 architects paid their 2018 annual retention fee on time, which represents 97% of the register. The Architects Registration Board’s 2018 annual retention fee was due on 31st December 2017. As a regulated profession, architects are legally required to pay their retention fee of £107, held for the fourth year running. The fees collected from registrants cover the regulation of the profession in the public interest. The Architects Act 1997 requires ARB to hold an accurate register and so those who did not pay their fee on time have been removed under Section 8.2 of the legislation.

BSRIA launches its famous Blue Book 2018

The famous Blue Book contains invaluable industry information.This includes key contacts (including BSRIA North); conversion data; key performance indicators; market statistics; legislation and financial information. BSRIA’s services, training courses and current publications are also covered. dhf welcomes tougher Building Regulations

dhf (Door & Hardware Federation) has welcomed recommendations made in the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety’s Interim Report.“We fully support the proposals presented by this report, particularly pertaining to appropriate qualification of those responsible for manufacture, installation, repair and maintenance,” says dhf’s CEO, Bob Perry.“We have been actively lobbying for this and are pleased to work with other bodies in the industry to achieve this objective.”

Breaking ground on UAE Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, laid the foundations for the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai on December 17th 2017.

The ceremony, also included the signing of the official agreement for the UAE’s participation in the expo, which was signed by His Excellency Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of State and Chairman of the National Media Council (NMC) – the entity tasked with overseeing the construction and management of the UAE Pavilion at international expos – and Her Excellency Reem Ibrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and DirectorGeneral of the Expo 2020 Office.

In Brief Brooke Homes to bring complete three-storey house to ecobuild

The pavilion, designed by Santiago Calatrava, has the shape of a falcon in flight which symbolises the leadership and pride of the country.The design components reflect the values of openness, communication and tolerance, aligning with the main theme of the exhibition, which calls for international cooperation to improve the quality of life through sustainable development. For Santiago Calatrava, having the opportunity to participate in the design of the pavilion is “an honour, given that it constitutes a project of great global importance. We are convinced that once its construction is completed, it will become a symbol of the bold and daring spirit of the Emirates that will last over time”.

The pavilion covers an area of more than 15,000m2; it is made up of four floors with the top storey dedicated to hospitality with an area of 1717m2. Meanwhile, a 588m2 mezzanine floor will house support units, and the two remaining floors consist of more than 12,000m2 of exhibition space.The entire structure is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. The NMC approved the design submitted by Santiago Calatrava after a sevenmonth design competition, where nine international architecture firms submitted 11 different concepts. Timber reaches for the sky with new roof designs House-builders are urged to review their legacy roof designs as the Trussed Rafter Association (TRA) committed to switching to building design standard Eurocode 5 on 1st January. By switching to Eurocode 5,TRA members will work with the most up-to-date codes and better software to give customers a quality service.TRA members will no longer be accepting work using British Standard designs and all existing designs must be phased out by 1st July 2018. Building Regulations only refer to Eurocodes and so, all newcomers to the trussed rafter industry are being trained to Eurocode 5.

he Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension Project will provide a critical extension for the existing TTC subway system across the municipal boundary between the City of Toronto and the Regional Municipality of York. Pioneer Village Station straddles the border of York Region, beneath the intersection of Steeles Avenue West and Northwest Gate, anchoring a corner of York University Campus. The station will serve as an integrated regional transport hub serving up to 20,000 subway passenger trips daily, providing 1881 commuter parking spaces and two separate regional bus terminals. The location is otherwise underdeveloped and it is intended that the station entrances and bus terminals will create a public focal point that will serve the future development of the surrounding area, beginning with Steeles Avenue West.

The subway station’s entrances were designed as a pair of sculptural structures; their height exceeding that necessary, to increase their visibility – “We learn a lot from cathedrals,” commented Will Alsop. Rendered in weathering steel, these two structures mirror each other in shape and scale. The bus station canopy – also corten steel – has a huge cantilevered roof, the surface of which is planted with meadow grasses to create a ‘green roof’ and to provide shelter for waiting passengers. Both Pioneer Village station and Finch West station comprise beautifully executed concrete work – in Pioneer Village the interior walls are faceted, highly-polished concrete and the supporting columns along the length of the platforms are angled and ovoid in section.

‘LightSpell’, designed by realities:united, Berlin, is a ‘super-sculpture’; a hybrid between art and the lighting of the subway station. The interactive installation consists of a suspended array of 40 light elements that run along the ceiling throughout the station. Each element produces the alphabet; special characters and numerals, enabling passengers to send messages that appear on the display. The debate on censorship of this installation is ongoing. Pioneer Village station incorporates the following environmental initiatives: Cool roofs and green roofs Increased daylight levels to reduce electric lighting power usage LED lighting in pylon signs, and energyefficient lighting in illuminated wayfinding signage to reduce power consumption

Water-efficient plumbing fixtures Energy-efficient HVAC system Reduced stormwater runoff into the municipal drainage system by utilising green roof landscaping and soft landscaping areas adjacent to other building runoff areas Short-term bicycle parking spaces Landscaping with native and droughttolerant species. Finch West station is located at the intersection of Keele Street and Finch Avenue West.The hydro corridor to the north of the station accommodates commuter parking for 347 vehicles, passenger pick-up and drop-off with associated access roads from Keele Street. Bruce McLean, Alsop’s long-term collaborator, was appointed as the artist for the station, and in this particular case, the art is totally integrated into the architecture of this structure.

McLean was inspired by ancient architecture – the external columns at Finch West refer to Greek caryatids and those supporting the underground roof were influenced by 6000-year-old Minorcan pillars that would have supported underground houses.The sculptural concrete forms are integrated with the supporting columns of the substation and entrance buildings, the bus canopy and doubleheight columns. Every visible aspect of the public space of this project aims to blend the boundaries between art and architecture.

Since the interior space is required to be air conditioned, a major challenge was keeping the inherently permeable bamboo structure airtight. The architects solved this by installing arch-shaped glass panels between the columns and the walls. Also, partition walls composed of bamboo layers, rubber sheets and a thatch finishing were placed within the columns to make them airtight also. The gabled roof, which has a maximum height of 6.4m, allows natural light to permeate inside and provides a pleasant atmosphere to this dynamic room. The gently curved interior form allows people to experience the layered frame structures, which further the user perception of the depth of the space. The service area, located adjacent to the bamboo building, is compactly designed so that it sits below the bamboo building’s eaves yet still meets the minimum functional requirements in the design’s plan. The bamboo has been treated with a traditional Vietnamese method in order to naturally reach the high-quality and longterm durability that the project demands. Energy efficiency: insulate the installation Andy Swift, National Sales Manager for foam tapes supplier ISO-CHEMIE, says that with the latest technologies, the entire window installation – and not just the frame – can be energy rated effectively. Here, he explains further.

n fact, it could be said that in the light of the many innovative products available, that it’s perhaps ‘criminal’ that a lamentable number of installations remain unchecked or unregulated, leaving in their wake a legacy of problems that can last for years and cost thousands of pounds to rectify in the long run. Heat will always find the fastest exit as it comes up against the A- or A+-rated window and this is invariably the 10mm or so expansion gap left around the window when it was originally fitted.This is normally left empty but some uncontrolled volume of spray foam can be injected to fill the void before a silicone trim is applied for a smart-looking finish. Unfortunately, as expedient as this might be, none of these solutions create a measurable, long-term, high-performance thermal, acoustic or airtight barrier: the U-value of the installed window is simply reduced, which leads to heat loss and, ultimately, financial loss.

If Building Regulations remain lenient, we will continue to see window and door developments that only just meet minimum standards. But installers deserve better insulating products to improve energy efficiency and save money for their end-users, and the latest generation of high-performance foam sealing tapes, which use ‘smart’ foams impregnated with different substances to create a measurable U-value as low as 0.6wm2k, offer superb thermal insulation and acoustic sound reduction by 63 dB. As these installation tapes are completely weathertight against driving rain up to hurricane force wind speeds, installers can quickly apply them around the frame during initial fitting. This provides the assurance that they have completed a comprehensive A-rated installation rather than just supplying an A-rated window. This is a benefit that can be sold on to deliver enhanced energy efficiency advantages for customers and property owners.

systems – hiring access systems, with the associated health and safety issues, can add significantly to the overall cost of a newbuild or renovation project. Moreover, because the foam sealant can be used in the wet and rain the installation of windows can be undertaken regardless of external weather conditions, avoiding time-consuming, expensive delays. This can add up to potential savings of hundreds of pounds per day. Self-adhesive ISO-BLOCO ONE provides a high-performance seal for window and door joints up to 30mm wide and is impermeable to driving rain at a minimum of 1000 Pa – 66% higher reliability than most conventional joint sealing tapes. The internal airtight seal has been tested at 1000 Pa pressure difference (20 times more than UK Building Regulations) and found to give less than 0.1m³ of air loss. At the same time, depending on tape width, it will also supply a U-value of 0.6 and reduce sound by 63 dB, straight from the box. Once installed, the tape ensures structures are better protected from

elemental factors like wind, dust and moisture ingress by accommodating the changes in structural movement caused by environmental, cyclical and settlement factors. The product complies with energysaving regulations (EnEV) on windows and doors as well as the RAL quality assurance association and can accommodate extremes of temperature changes, from -30°C to +80°C. BLOCO ONE offers a single-product ‘fit and forget’ solution for fast and effective sealing based around the European RAL principles of three-level sealing – the inside seal area is more airtight than the external one, allowing any trapped moisture inside the joint, or within the wall, to escape outwards rather than into the building. Starry, starry night The much-anticipated Louvre Abu Dhabi opened to the public on November 11th last year, with a spectacular week-long series of celebrations. Designed by French Architect Jean Nouvel, the spectacular design of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s dome forms a cluster of stars when illuminated, lighting up the night sky. All images ©Roland Halbel

t is the first museum of its kind in the Arab region and offers a new perspective on the history of art in a globalised world. An iconic architectural masterpiece designed by Jean Nouvel, it is located on the waterfront in Abu Dhabi’s cultural district on Saadiyat Island. The inaugural installation in its spacious collection galleries will present 600 works of art, half from its own rich holdings and half consisting of stellar works visiting from its 13 partner museums in France. Louvre Abu Dhabi is the result of a unique collaboration between Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and France.The museum’s collection spans the history of humanity and will explore a universal narrative through artworks and artefacts from all over the world. Pritzker-prize-winning Architect Jean Nouvel sought inspiration for the concept of Louvre Abu Dhabi in traditional Arabic architectural culture and designed Louvre Abu Dhabi as a ‘museum city’ in the sea. Its contrasting series of white buildings take inspiration from the medina and

low-lying Arab settlements. In total, 55 individual but connected buildings, including 26 galleries, make up this museum city. The facades of the buildings are made up of 3900 panels of ultra-high performance fibre concrete (UHPC). The museum design is a collaboration between traditional design and modern construction techniques. The tranquil environment encourages visitors to enjoy the ever-changing relationship between the sun and the dome and between sea, buildings and land. A vast dome, 180m in diameter, covers the majority of the museum city. This impressive structure is visible from the sea, the surrounding areas and Abu Dhabi city centre. Constructed by Waagner Biro (a specialist in steel structures), the dome consists of eight different layers: four outer layers clad in stainless steel and four inner layers clad in aluminium, separated by a steel frame 5m high. The frame is made of 10,000 structural components preassembled into 85 super-sized elements, each weighing on average 50 tonnes.

The dome’s complex pattern is the result of a highly studied geometric design. The pattern is repeated at various sizes and angles in the eight superimposed layers. Each ray of light penetrates the eight layers before appearing or disappearing. The result is a cinematic ‘rain of light’ effect as the sun’s path progresses throughout the day. At night, it forms 7850 stars visible from both inside and out. This ‘rain of light’ effect has been the subject of many models and mock-ups over the years and is one of the defining features of the concept. The dome is supported by four permanent piers, each 110m apart, hidden within the museum buildings to give the impression that the dome is floating. The interior dome elevation is 29m from the ground floor to the underside of the cladding. The highest point of the dome is 40m above sea level and 36m above ground floor level. Warmer when it is cold. Cooler in the tropics. People do not resist thermal shock well. Nor do works of art. Such elementary observations have influenced Louvre Abu Dhabi. It wishes to create a welcoming world serenely combining light and shadow, reflection and calm. It wishes to belong to a country, to its history, to its geography without becoming a flat translation, the pleonasm that results in boredom and convention. It also aims at emphasising the fascination generated by rare encounters. “It is rather unusual to find a built archipelago in the sea. It is even more uncommon to see that it is protected by a parasol creating a rain of light.

The construction of the museum took place from 2013 to 2017. Prior to completion, Louvre Abu Dhabi had already received three international awards: winner of the ‘Project of the Future’ category of the Identity Design Award in 2015; the European Steel Design Award in 2017, received with Waagner Biro, the Louvre Abu Dhabi dome specialist, and winner of the ‘Most Prominent UAE Project’ category of the Identity Design Award in 2017. A capital workplace in Cardiff A seven-storey landmark commercial scheme in the centre of Cardiff’s Commercial Enterprise Zone, Number Three Capital Quarter, will provide 77,931ft2 of high-quality office space with a central atrium and terraces on the sixth and first floors providing features that will ensure a pleasant and functional workplace for occupiers.

Prestige and performance Conveniently located close to Cardiff’s railway stations and within easy reach of both the city centre and Cardiff Bay, Number Three Capital Quarter is part of a major investment in the city’s Central Business District. The specification of the office building not only needs to reflect

the prestige and quality required to attract occupiers today but also needs to withstand the test of time to provide an extended service life for continued highcalibre accommodation in the future. As a critical element of the building envelope, the roof build-up had to be aligned to this specification philosophy and the decision to use a RubberGard EPDM membrane from Firestone was driven by the developer. Explains Gary Foster from JR Smart: “We had used Firestone’s RubberGard EPDM membrane on previous schemes on the Capital Quarter development and had been very pleased with how quickly and easily it could be installed with a neat finish. “The service life of the roof is very important for these high-calibre office schemes as it will reduce maintenance

requirements and ensure the building retains its Grade A performance. We’re confident the strength and durability of RubberGard EPDM will give us a ‘fit and forget’ solution, which – as the membrane will be obscured by the paved overlay – was a vital factor in the specification.”

esigned by architect practice, Morgan 2 Hayman, for developer JR Smart, the speculative office building adds to the existing 200,000ft2 of office space already occupied at Capital Quarter, providing high-calibre accommodation for occupiers including Finance Wales, Alert Logic, WSP-Parsons Brinckerhoff, Network Rail, Home Office, Public Health Wales, Opus Energy, Atkins Global and Lambert Smith Hampton.

Firestone worked with Envirotek to develop the specification for the membrane, assisting with wind loading calculations and optimisation of the membrane material to support a safe installation process

Building Envelope: RCI The detailing required for the fullyadhered RubberGard EPDM membrane at Number Three Capital Quarter was considerable. The Envirotek team had to interface the membrane with abseiling hooks around the perimeter of the seven-storey roof, which will be used for window cleaning purposes, along with steel columns that support maintenance gantries, structural steelwork installed on the roof to create visual shielding for rooftop plant and support steelwork for a solar PV installation. For all the penetrations, Envirotek used Firestone’s QuickSeam FormFlash, an uncured EPDM flashing laminated to cured seam tape. The tape was used to fully-encapsulate any details and regular site visits from Firestone’s technical support team ensured that all elements of the installation were fully compliant with the manufacturer’s guidelines.

The RubberGard EPDM membrane has been installed by Firestone-licensed contractor, Envirotek, on the main roof area at seventh-floor level along with the terraces at sixth- and first-floor level. The contractor was involved in the project at the design stage to ensure that sufficient provision was made for drainage in terms of the number and size of drainage outlets to maximise roof performance and avoid any risk of standing water.

Extensive detailing Envirotek began the installation by priming the concrete roof with a bonded vapour control layer.To further aid drainage to the outlets designed into the roof, a tapered insulation scheme was then installed, creating a fall to the drainage points.This was installed

as a two-layer insulation system, with flat insulation board followed by the tapered board to deliver the required U-value. With the insulation in place, the RubberGard EPDM could be adhered to the roof. Firestone worked with Envirotek to develop the specification for the membrane, assisting with wind loading calculations and optimisation of the membrane material to support a safe installation process with high standards of integrity for the finished roof. Comments Neil Jones from Envirotek: “We have used RubberGard EPDM on many projects but the technical support and training provided by Firestone help to ensure that we deliver the highest standards of quality and workmanship on every scheme with a team that are confident with even the most complex of details.”

Finishing touches The building has been designed with a 1.3m parapet wall around the perimeter of both the main roof area and the terraces, and the roofing scheme required a solution that could be taken up and over the top of these walls with a metal capping termination. On the main roof area, Envirotek took the insulation up the wall, followed by the fully adhered RubberGard EPDM membrane. For the terraces, the RubberGard EPDM was adhered directly onto the concrete face of the parapet wall and terminated at the top of the wall with a metal capping, before being obscured by a 50mm cement particle board, which was mechanically fixed to the internal face of the wall to provide a decorative finish, visible to any occupant standing on the terrace. Indeed, with the installation now complete, none of the RubberGard EPDM membrane is visible. Both the roof and terrace areas have been finished with 600 x 600 x 50mm paving slabs, which have been mounted onto support pads to protect the RubberGard EPDM membrane from abrasion and aid drainage. For the terrace areas, adjustable support pads enabled the paving to be laid as a flat walking surface, level with access to the sixth- and firstfloor doorways, despite the falls created by the tapered insulation. The Number Three Capital Quarter development is now almost complete, helping to energise the commercial property landscape in Cardiff and encourage growth and investment.

Architecturally, the form of the building is a direct response to its climatic context. Its wide cantilevered terraces shade the lower levels, protecting them from the harsh tropical sun. The balustrades, angled to tie in with the overall geometry of the building, extend downwards as louvred shading devices for the terrace below. The building also offers retail, dining and lounge facilities, with a stepped outdoor seating area from which to sit and enjoy the view. The steps feature glass risers that admit natural light deep into the internal atrium. The connection to the existing terminal is seamless, and the design introduces a new central diagonal circulation spine that connects the roof level to the marine deck, both physically and visually, via a series of escalators cascading down through the public spaces.

Bespoke Armstrong ceiling stuns in Scotland An Armstrong suspension grid for plasterboard ceilings, which is up to 40% quicker to install than traditional systems, has been used as the foundation for a completely bespoke, visually stunning day care centre ceiling that was created at a fraction of the cost of a specialist solution.

rmstrong’s Drywall Grid System (DGS) was used to form a curved ceiling at Scottish War Blinded’s new Hawkhead Centre for visually impaired veterans in Paisley, Scotland. Other Armstrong systems have been used in a different new building on the same former garden centre site – the Jenny’s Well care home for older people with sight loss, run by Scottish War Blinded’s sister charity Royal Blind. The Hawkhead Centre, designed by Page\Park Architects, features 1500m2 of Armstrong’s DGS facetted system in the atrium/foyer, formed to a radius and using acoustic insulation above, a black acoustic fabric and finished with birch-faced plywood planks 165 and 225mm wide.

This steel-framed facility provides an easyto-navigate layout through the gymnasium hall, workshop, art room, living skills kitchen, IT room, therapy room and quiet garden room. The Jenny’s Well care home features Armstrong Ceiling solutions in the main entrance, reception and manager’s offices, all the corridors, back of house staff areas, kitchens and toilets.These included 1000m2 of Armstrong’s Perla and 250m2 of Ultima + dB Cradle to Cradle-certified tiles, as well as 350m2 of Dune Max, all mineral with tegular edges installed on an Armstrong 24mm exposed grid. In addition, it featured Clean Room-rated Parafon Hygien tiles to the main kitchen and humidity-resistant Hydroboard tiles to laundry areas and toilets, both square-edged

600 x 600mm in a 24mm corrosion-resistant grid.The use of a 200mm-high Axiom profile also provided a solution for ceiling level changes with a pre-finished bespoke upstand. This 54-bed, two-storey facility has been organised in a layout of three ‘pavilions’ to the north-east and west and a ‘gateway’ building to the south-east providing access. The CE Marked and Cradle to Cradlecertified DGS and other Armstrong systems were supplied by CCF in Glasgow and installed for main contractor CCG (Scotland) Ltd by specialist sub-contractor Brian Hendry Interiors, a member of Armstrong’s Green Omega network of sustainably-certified installers, whose squad of specialist fixers completed over a sixmonth programme.

Managing Director, Brian Hendry, said: “This was a very challenging project, requiring careful pre-planning, the highest attention to detail and accuracy in setting out. Quality was of the highest standard of installation and required exact sizing to ensure the finished timber planks fitted to the DGS, all aligning through. It is a testament to the quality and hard work of our fixers and the experience of our supervisor that this project looks so impressive. “The DGS system was built using a jig to pre-determined radii and then raised and installed at high level to provide a curve.As a unique and bespoke installation, we had to constantly liaise with the architects to ensure their aesthetic requirements were met and verify all the different components which meant the complete ceiling could be built within the tolerances required. “The Armstrong Drywall Grid System facetted system was a perfect fit for this type of bespoke ceiling which could be altered on site, allowing much more flexibility compared to the specified traditional MF pre-determined off-site curved grid system.Armstrong’s Drywall Grid System was also quick and easy to install.” Page\Park Architect’s Martin Flett said: “The ceilings are crucial to the visual impact of the building and the integration of building services and acoustics. “The Armstrong system forms the frame for the decorative ceiling linings and building services integration. It dovetailed well with the aesthetic and performance requirements and is clever in how it allows you to form a curve from a facetted framing system.” Armstrong DGS installation specialist (North), Martin Dalby, explained that the DGS system was first covered with 100 x 6mm plywood strips to which the black acoustic fabric was fixed.Then the fixers used pre-finished 9mm plywood perpendicular to the ply lining to provide the finished aesthetic. Acoustic insulation was installed within the void to ensure high acoustic performance to the rooms and spaces below. He said:“The advantage of using the DGS on this project was that a very expensive bespoke system to provide the finish was not required.The DGS facetted system had a relatively low lead time compared to other solutions in the market and the components were extremely cost-effective. “Fitting the finished timber was the slowest part of installing this system but because of all the planning and setting out work carried out early on in the project with the fitting of the DGS framework, we had avoided all the lighting bays and there was no further work to be done altering the system.”

ZGS checks in at Oslo Airport The extension at Oslo Airport is one of the biggest recent projects in the lighting industry. Zumtobel Group Services (ZGS) connected 21,200 luminaires, installed a record-breaking 32 eBox devices and supported the customer every step of the way. Thanks to the outstanding results, ZGS has now been trusted with the job of modernising other parts of the airport.

slo Airport is getting ready for the future. A second terminal was opened at Norwayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest and most important airport in April 2017 and a third one is currently being planned. At the same time, the somewhat dated Terminal 1 is all set to be revamped in the near future. The Zumtobel Group was the full-service provider of the complete lighting solution in Terminal 2. ZGS installed intelligent lighting controls and emergency lighting systems to go alongside 21,200 LED luminaires from Thorn and Zumtobel and various components from Tridonic. At the same time, ZGS helped the customer with additional services right from the very start, advising the project managers and providing specialist training for the numerous electricians.

Imitating nature The larger the building, the greater the importance of intelligent control systems. This is certainly true in the case of the 117,000m2 terminal at Oslo Airport. As well as effectively and efficiently regulating the large number of luminaires, the ZGS systems also adapt the lighting in line with the natural daylight situation. A Skyscanner device mounted on the roof constantly checks the current lighting conditions and sends this information to the LITENET lighting management system. LITENET then enables the best combination of artificial light and daylight â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not only in terms of intensity but also when it comes to light colour. This saves up to 82% energy and creates unparalleled visitor experiences.

The airportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retail area lighting is separate from the lighting controls system in the terminal. Each shop is managed individually via LITECOM.This allows the shopowners to adjust brightness levels and select lighting scenes according to their individual needs.

Safety through service As the largest eBox emergency lighting installation worldwide, the ZGS emergency lighting system at the airport is a true record-breaker. With 32 eBox central emergency power supply devices, ZGS controls a total of 5000 Zumtobel ONLITE escape sign luminaries. The eBox devices also make sure that power is always provided. All 32 supply modules are visible on a browser-based programme and can be managed easily from any computer.

The airport operator, Avinor, has additionally ensured legal compliance with all the rules and regulations by signing an annual ZGS maintenance contract. This agreement includes functional tests required by law, software updates and data storage, enabling ZGS to guarantee full system functionality at all times. Thomas Knoop, Executive Vice President of ZGS, sees this installation as an indication of a wider trend:“In this project, we’ve again seen what customers really want: complete solutions that cover everything from luminaires to controls and maintenance services.The latest request to update the emergency lighting system in Terminal 1 really confirms the success of our business model.”

This decision reflects a greater appetite amongst hospitality designers for stone which mimics natural materials whilst also using opposing surface textures in conjunction to create a multi-sensory experience. Neolith Calacatta Silk was specified for the bar worktops, a colour fast becoming a go-to choice for professional chefs for its aesthetics as much as its practicality. Calacatta was also used for the restaurant walls, bathroom vanities and the stairs. In an exclusive interview, Chef Borghese highlights how he can now plate his adventurous concepts and culinary inventions straight onto the surface without the danger of staining or tainting the stone. He compares it to the craft of an artist. “If I was a painter,” he highlighted, “Neolith would be my canvas.” Taking this concept one step further, the restaurant also uses smaller, bespoke-cut pieces of Neolith as plates for tapas-style dishes. ‘Order…Order’ in transformation of courthouse into sumptuous five-star hotel It was once a building where juries deliberated and judges passed sentences, the police investigated crimes and arrested criminals. However, this magnificent Grade II Listed magistrates court and police station on Old Street has been converted and given a fresh lease of life after a period of dereliction and now stands as a sumptuous five-star boutique hotel. To change this Grade II Listed building from a courthouse to a hotel, careful consideration had to be given to find ways to improve the thermal performance as well as mitigating the ingress of noise from the busy streets outside, to create a warm and peaceful haven for guests. The primary windows could not be removed; so Selectaglaze was approached by contractor McAleer and Rushe to provide a solution. 106 units were installed including curved, raked and a beautiful

double-floor feature window which was 5.287m high and 2.045m in width. Secondary glazing is an independent window installed on the room-side of a building which reduces noise ingress, making a reduction of 45 dB easily achievable. Furthermore, secondary glazing can reduce heat loss by up to 50%. With great attention to detail paid to the design and build of this magnificent conversion, Old Street Hotel is on target to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.

For the Welsh National Velodrome in Newport, Newport City Council wanted a very quiet heating system that could maintain different temperatures for competitors and spectators. To heat the race track and badminton courts area, a Nor-ray-Vac continuous radiant tube system from Nortek was specified for the race track and badminton court area, while three AmbiRad linear tube heaters were installed above the seating areas.

as-fired warm air and radiant heating systems are long-standing technologies associated with effectively heating large, open (industrial or commercial) spaces. By burning the fuel at point of use currently provides an efficient thermal and seasonal efficiency, however, the way in which manufacturers will calculate seasonal efficiency (from 1st January 2018 onwards) is changing due to ErP (Energy-related Products) legislation coming into force. We would like to give you an insight into the impact this legislation will have.

What is ErP? ErP is part of the Ecodesign regulation (EU) 2015/1188 which, along with the implementing Directive 2009/125/EC, is an EU policy aimed at improving the energy efficiency and other environmental performance criteria for ErP, such as radiant and warm air heaters.

How is equipment categorised? Products have been divided into product groups or ‘Lots,’ with warm air heaters using gaseous or liquid fuels contained within Lot 21 and radiant heaters within Lot 20.

What are the requirements? Each Lot provides the minimum energy efficiency and environmental values for each heating technology. Any product that does not comply with the requirements cannot be marketed and sold within the EU – including the UK. Following the referendum in the UK to leave the EU, the requirements of Ecodesign will still have to be complied with as it could take up to two years to finalise the process. Even then, unless new UK legislation is introduced, ErP will continue to be one of many methods employed by the Government to reduce the environmental impact of heating technology. Lot 20 (radiant) has a max NOx emission of 200mg/kWh input plus a minimum seasonal efficiency of 74%. Seasonal efficiency is a combination of thermal efficiency, radiant efficiency and electrical power consumption. Lot 21 (warm air) has a max NOx emission of 100mg/kWh input plus a minimum seasonal efficiency of 72%. Seasonal efficiency is calculated from airflow temperature rise, thermal efficiency and electrical power consumption. Lot 21 also applies to AHUs and includes the performance of any heating/ chilling coils, where human comfort is the primary heating purpose.

Essentially, other than outdoor (heating an outdoor space) units, air curtains or ambient units, all products need to comply with either Lot 20 or Lot 21, plus the motor efficiency ErP regulation.

Implementation date: Each lot has a different date. Lot 20 (radiant heaters) came into force on 1st January 2018. Lot 21 (warm air heaters). Minimum seasonal efficiency came into force on 1st January 2018, with the maximum NOx levels applicable September 2018. The second tier for ErP will be 2021, whereupon seasonal efficiency will increase to 78% and maximum NOx emission for gaseous fuels will be <=70mg/kWh input. Crucially, the minimum criteria for Lots 20 and 21 are applicable for new installations and when replacing existing products.As a result, customers can be assured that the heating equipment they are purchasing is highly energy-efficient and emissions of harmful environmental pollutants are constrained. Unlike other products, warm air heaters and other commercial heating appliances are directly planned and purchased by HVAC professionals, the regulation 2015/1186 excludes warm air heaters and other commercial heaters from mandatory energy labelling. With an overall VWART of just 33.4ºC, impressively low domestic hot water return temperatures and the ability to deliver flexible Keep Warm operation, the BESA test results provide a clear, independently verified confirmation that the Evinox ModuSat XR range delivers outstanding heating and hot water performance for modern heat networks. Knauf Windliner obtains BBA certificate Knauf, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of lightweight building products and systems, has achieved third-party certification from the British Board of Agrément (BBA) for its Windliner Sheathing Board. The BBA evaluates manufacturer’s products and systems, and awards certificates as recognition of the product’s quality and reliability for use in the marketplace. Knauf Windliner has passed all tests, on-site evaluations and quality management checks, reassuring architects and specifiers of its use as an external sheathing board. In addition, Knauf Windliner boards have been recognised for their water resistance and weathertightness during the construction phase and prior to completion of the external facade. Flooring preparation products donated by F. Ball have been used to install floorcoverings in an function room at CB Hounslow United Football Club, Middlesex. Stopgap 1100 Gypsum, Styccobond F46 pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive and Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier were used to install a combination of wood-effect vinyl sheet and carpet tiles over an anhydrite screed. F. Ball’s Stopgap 1100 Gypsum was applied to create a perfectly smooth surface ahead of the installation of the floorcoverings. Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier was then used to install high-quality, bitumen-backed Desso carpet tiles to create a border around room. Schlüter specification insight: minimising build-up in the manor Schlüter-Systems used its specialist technical knowledge and a number of key product solutions to minimise floor build-up and guarantee complete waterproofing provision in the refurbishment of one of Ireland’s most magnificent country houses.

et in 840 acres of grounds, Adare Manor has been the subject of an 18-month-long renovation – its most extensive in 25 years. 40 new bedrooms have been added to this 19th-century Neo-Gothic masterpiece as well as a host of new facilities; including a swimming pool, boardroom, cinema, spa and 350-capacity ballroom. Stone was extensively specified as part of the project. Schlüter-Systems was initially engaged to provide a waterproofing solution for Adare Manor but was eventually able to assist on a greater scale.

Area: bedrooms and bathrooms (floors) Action: minimising height for uncoupling, underfloor heating and waterproofing Through use of multi-functional products, Schlüter was able to put forward a singlesource solution that reduced build-up from 10 layers to six and saved 19mm of height, as well as eliminating the need for a smoothing compound. The floor build-up was approved by lead architect, ReardonSmith, and main contractor, John Paul Construction.

Underfloor heating, uncoupling and waterproofing – four layers to one Underfloor heating, uncoupling and waterproofing provision was simplified from four layers to one, using the electric underfloor heating system, SchlüterDITRA-HEAT-E. Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT matting is only 5.5mm thick and was laid onto a 1mm bed of flexible adhesive, giving a build-up of just 6.5mm. As opposed to needing a layer of encapsulation above it, the system features studded matting and the cable clips securely within it, avoiding the need for tape or adhesive and enabling even spacing. Acoustic matting – a slimline variant Schlüter assisted by exchanging the proposed matting of 10mm thickness for Schlüter-DITRA-SOUND matting of only 3.5mm thickness, saving 65% of build-up for acoustic reduction measures. This matting offered the same dB rating and could be installed using a standard polymer modified adhesive. Area: bathrooms/golf clubhouse, including spa (walls) Action: providing guaranteed waterproofing For areas of high moisture, waterproofing is an essential consideration and it takes on an even greater significance when it comes to preserving historic buildings – Adare Manor has stood for 185 years and the intent of the restoration is to see it through at least the same again. A secure waterproofing system Schlüter’s complete waterproofing system for these areas consisted of SchlüterKERDI-200 waterproofing membrane, KERDI-KEBA sealing band and KERDICOLL-L adhesive. These products work together to form a CE Marked waterproof solution that will stand the test of time. As well as the above solutions, Schlüter-Systems also provided its original uncoupling mat, Schlüter-DITRA-25, for use under the flooring of Adare Manor’s new ballroom and its golf clubhouse and spa. Refuse-to-Fuse: Victaulic announces effective, simple method for pipe joining Victaulic, a world-leading producer of mechanical pipe joining solutions, has announced the European premiere of its Refuse-to-Fuse solution. This new technique enables HDPE (high-density polyethylene) pipes to be coupled without the need for fusion. HDPE pipes are widely known and popular for their flexibility, long-term reliability and corrosion resistance. They are widely used, especially in the gas, water and wastewater sectors. The pipes are usually coupled using electrofusion or mirror welding, which require costly equipment and qualified personnel with a good command of these techniques. Victaulic’s new Refuse-to-Fuse process makes it possible to couple pipes of both small and large diameters without fusing in just a matter of minutes. The installation is very simple, requiring only a socket

or impact wrench. Furthermore, it is up to 10 times faster than standard fusing techniques. “Cooling periods and wait times are no longer required. Once fastened, the pipes are tightly coupled and completely sealed,” says Frank Börstler, Sales Engineer at Victaulic. With external diameters of 63 to 225mm, the 905 installation-ready coupling is pushed over the plain end of the HDPE pipe. As the nuts are tightened, a double row of stainless steel teeth around the coupling’s internal circumference grip the

exterior of the pipe’s plain end. All that’s needed to hold the coupling in position and guarantee a tight seal is to secure the two halves of the housing at their bold pads. For diameters greater than 225mm, the coupling’s springs grip the twin-grooved HDPE pipe. Here, too, the two halves of the coupling housing are tightened bolt pad to bolt pad. 8 www.victaulic.com

High capacity channel system drains main car park at Castlegate Business Park The 107-space car park at the new Costa, KFC outlets, Castlegate Business Park, Dudley, West Midlands, is drained with 44m of Hauraton’s RECYFIX MONOTEC high capacity channel drainage system. The Castlegate Business Park is already home to restaurants including Frankie and Benny’s and Pizza Hut, as well as a Showcase Cinema and offices. Hauraton introduced the MONOTEC system in January 2016. The Castlegate development joins numerous installations successfully completed in the United Kingdom. The RECYFIX MONOTEC channels installed in the car park’s red block/asphalt surfaces have a nominal grating width of 100mm, an overall height of 380mm and a cross section of 355.5cm2. Having a total water capacity of just over 1566 litres, the channel runs drained an area of over 1233m2.

Legno+ Small Natural is solid oak 42 x 300 x 10mm flooring with chamfered edges and ends, and a handworked finish, which is covered in situ with two micro resin layers, one decorative, the other protective.The subfloor was consolidated using EP21, liquid damp-proof membrane, and L34 Flex adhesive was used.
