Glass & Glazing
Glass and glazing systems transform Olympic media centre A major project to transform the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics media centre into a creative hub is nearing completion, with fire-resistant glazed atriums supplied by Devizesbased Wrightstyle, utilising specialist glass from Pyroguard.
H
ere East is a new campus for the creative and digital industries, transforming the former press and broadcast centres on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park into 1.2 million sqare feet of commercial space. Wrightstyle supplied three full-height steel curtain wall internal atriums to a total project size of over 800m2, combining fire-resistance to 60 minutes of integrity and insulation with a high level of acoustic performance.
4
Wrightstyle also supplied a large number of its unlatched 6050F1 doors to integrate seamlessly into the atriums over various levels, part of Wrightstyle’s commitment to offer complete and guaranteed glazing system solutions. Supplying to Lakesmere, a leading roofing, cladding and facade specialist, one of the atriums is now part of BT Sport’s new broadcasting centre, while the rest of Here East will include shared workspaces, public areas and a range of bars and restaurants.

The ambition behind Here East is to create a community of offices, studio spaces and a data centre, alongside new facilities for University College London, Loughborough University and Hackney Community College – a place for collaboration, entrepreneurship and learning. Wrightstyle also helped to transform the media centre for the 2004 Olympics and Paralympics in Athens, supplying over 41,000m2 of steel glazing systems to create Golden Hall, now one of Greece’s foremost retail centres. The company, which is a European leader in the design, fabrication and supply of advanced steel and aluminium glazing systems, was also a supplier to the 2012 London main stadium and the adjacent ArcelorMittal Orbit, the 114.5m tall sculpture and observation tower.
Glass & Glazing
Pyroguard supplied Pyroguard T-EI60/25-3 VI for the project, a double glazed, fire-resistant glass specifically designed for use in steel profiles. The solution provides an hour of integrity and insulation from fire and optionally can be combined with counterpanes, which offer additional performance characteristics such as solar control, thermal insulation, sound reduction or attack protection. The Here East project was complicated by the need to accommodate sloping head screens and, due to the size of the building, significant vertical and lateral movement.Wrightstyle’s design solution was to incorporate a specially welded, anti-racking configuration with bespoke brackets. Wrightstyle worked closely and successfully with both Lakesmere and Laing O’Rourke, the main contractor, to comply with stringent supply chain management, as well as training the Lakesmere installation team to ensure compliance with the more complex requirements of the project.
“Here East is all about transformative legacy planning – a hugely imaginative project to create jobs, encourage creative entrepreneurship and foster further education,” said Lee Coates, Wrightstyle’s Technical Director.
“Our advanced glazing systems allow ambient light to flood through the building, removing the more traditional internal walls that the designers saw as being barriers to networking and collaboration,” he continued. “The building height internal atrium at Here East uses steel framed curtain walling with Pyroguard fire glass. On the ground floor, there is a subtle continuation of the stunning ‘dazzle camouflage’, frit pattern that wraps around the facade of the building, whilst upper floors mix in black spandrel panels. This project demonstrates that the use of fire-rated glazing and does not require any compromise in terms of design or performance,” said Simon Ellison, UK Head of Project Sales at Pyroguard. “The result at Here East is a transformational project that will further rejuvenate the east of London, become a destination for other Londoners and serve as a model for other regeneration projects across the UK,” concluded Simon. 8 www.wrightstyle.co.uk

O Cantilever staircases lead the way in Jersey A staircase is usually the first thing that someone sees when they enter a home, so making it a feature staircase can have a huge impact on the look, feel and overall value of a property. For well over 20 years now, CANAL Architectural has been privileged enough to be the go-to expert for architects, contractors, property developers and homeowners, providing them with the very best advice on mastering a feature staircase.
n Jersey Island, properties are surrounded by beautiful scenery and views to die for. To mirror this beauty, homeowners have been investing heavily in their properties and the results are stunning. In one home, CANAL completed the interior and exterior, which featured three matching cantilever staircases, a glass staircase, a terrace balustrade and many metres of an architectural stainless steel handrail. For the interior, CANAL fabricated the metalwork structure of the cantilever staircases at its manufacturing site in Nottingham. This structure is the secret ingredient for the success of these staircases. On site in Jersey, the first fix involved mechanically fixing a structural steel stringer to the wall with protruding, welded cantilever channels. The stringer was then completely hidden by the wall finish and prepped for decorating.
Making a statement Unlike many timber staircases that use stainless steel fixings to attach the balustrade, this Jersey home hosts unique solid American walnut box treads, which were specially manufactured longer than normal. CANAL used this extra length to produce an end piece to secure the glass balustrade in place. To the keen eye, you will notice that the grain of the timber flows through the glass balustrade producing clean lines and a high-quality finish. Achieving the correct performance of this floating staircase design is about more than its aesthetic appeal. With various technical considerations and installation methods, CANAL is able to design, fabricate and install a cantilever staircase into your property making sure the performance, durability and appearance are second to none. Find inspiration for your next staircase project by visiting the CANAL Project Showcase via its website and discover a range of cantilever staircases in all shapes, sizes and materials. 8 www.canal.eu.com

.R. Laurence is a leading supplier to the glazing, railing, architectural and construction sectors and its innovative TAPER-LOC system was used along with base shoe channels to secure the cantilever glass balustrading to the balconies on the apartment blocks. The development, for client Bellway Homes, was designed by RMA Architecture and constructed by Principal Contractor, Ardmore Group.Tony Hall, Foreman of Steel Fixer at the Ardmore Group, commented: “We used approximately 2500 units over 19 storeys and had no failed units. The wedges were positioned at 200mm centres, on the advice of Building
BS6180:1999 and BS6399-1:1996, is more than 50% faster than alternative methods and is completely unique in that it uses a horizontal TAPER-LOC design which allows the system to be adjusted, dismantled and reset. This gave the installers the flexibility and control they needed on site for accurate installation and will make replacing scratched or broken panels effortless in the future. TAPER-LOC has a unique design that lets you apply precision tension to lock it in place, securing the glass in your aluminium base shoe without the use of messy cement.Your installation time is reduced by up to 50% while still exceeding code standards. Unique because they use a horizontal taper lock design,TAPERLOC tapers are simply installed with CRL’s exclusive TLK9 installation/removal tool. This tool mechanically slides the tapers horizontally in the base shoe and compresses them together. When compressed, they expand in thickness and lock in place. When the correct tension is applied, the torque wrench will ‘click’ and break for a few degrees of rotation. The same tool will also loosen the tapers for glass alignment or replacement, so if the glass panel is scratched or broken it can be replaced with ease, no mess, no large expense, delay or disruption to the rest of the balustrade. The TAPER-LOC system supports all mounting methods, and is designed to meet and exceed code standards.TAPER-LOC is designed to be used on internal and external applications and partners perfectly with CRL’s heavy aluminium base shoe and premium top cap rails. 8 www.taper-loc.co.uk

ESG Switchable leads the way with LCD privacy glass and controllers Using the best quality LCD film in the UK, capable of creating the largest switchable LCD panels in the country, ESG Switchable panels are widely regarded as the best performing switchable privacy glass on the market. But what makes its switchable glass even better is ESG’s range of patented controllers and wiring accessories.
T
hese controllers are designed to monitor the LCD glass panels, ensure they are operating at their optimum performance and to make installation as easy as possible by using a plug and play wiring solution. Since ESG released the new controller two years ago, there has only been one controller in the range – the HD-1.This model is capable of powering between 4 to 6m² of glass, dependant on the application – larger projects were accommodated by linking HD-1s together. Now, finally ESG has launched the big brother to the HD-1, the new ESG-4K.This new 4K controller is capable of powering up to 20m² and still has the ability to be linked together for larger installations. ESG’s patented range of controllers are fully compatible with nearly all third-party commercial and home automation services (BMS).The controllers’ ability to use both
high (230v) and low voltage switching methods make integration into systems such as Lutron, Crestron and Nexia an easy task. This compatibility allows ESG Switchable LCD privacy glass to be controlled via the home screen of your automation system on your PC, tablet or smart phone. For those without a BMS but wanting the convenience of tablet or smart phone control, there is now ESG’s very own ESG Switchable app. Available for both IOS and Android, this app is designed exclusively to control ESG’s new ESG-4K controller. The app can control the on/off switching as well as having the ability to change the level of opacity of the LCD privacy glass. For installations with multiple controllers which require independent switching, the app will display each controller ID on-screen and allow the user to quickly and easily switch between each controller in the system.

‘Glass over the fascia’ in multi-award-winning treehouse venue
Images: Above: Glass feature balustrades on the balconies and walkways, created by Q-railing, together with glazed floor-toceiling curtain walls, allow for stunning unobstructed views of the surrounding woodland Below: In total, 140m of balustrade was installed, with Q-railing Easy Glass MOD 0763 glass adapters and stainless steel cap rails
Looking as though it is poised to take flight, the Blackburn Wing is a multi-award-winning conference and events venue located within the ancient woodlands of the historic Bowcliffe Estate at Bramham, close to Leeds and York.
D
esigned by The Harris Partnership and commissioned by the Bayford Group, the aerofoil-shaped ‘treehouse’, as it is sometimes described, is located in the grounds of an estate that once belonged to Aviation Pioneer, Robert Blackburn – a fact that inspired both the aeronautical theme of the design and the name of the venue.
Major refurbishment The 200m2 Blackburn Wing is part of a £6m refurbishment of the estate. The curved wooden beams and tensile cables of the construction reference the biplane wings that Robert Blackburn is credited with creating. Clad in copper, it is cantilevered 30m above ground, supported by galvanized steel legs and reinforced with steel cross bracings. Two wooden walkways form a connection between the ‘wing’, with its spectacular wrap-around balconies, and the estate grounds.
Magnificent interaction of design and setting In addition to copper and wood, glass plays a central role in the design. Glass feature balustrades on the balconies and walkways,
created by Q-railing, together with glazed floor-to-ceiling curtain walls, allow for stunning unobstructed views of the surrounding woodland. As a result, users of the building experience a feeling of openness and a connection with nature. In total, 140m of balustrade was installed with Q-railing Easy Glass MOD 0763 glass adapters and stainless steel cap rails. Specific to this balustrade system is the extension of the glass over the fascia for a continuous, uniform and transparent effect. A series of Q-railing handrails and cap rails in a variety of materials, shapes and sizes were available to complete the balustrade as desired. This particular glass balustrade can be installed at the bottom edge as a glass clamp system between the glass panels, or at the lower edge of each glass panel secured with the safety pins. In this particular project, the glass balustrade reinforces the feeling of proximity to nature from the inside of the building and blends perfectly with the face of the treehouse from the outside. Since its completion in February 2015, the Blackburn Wing has won numerous awards, one of them being the RIBA Yorkshire Award 2015.
Being declared one of eight outstanding Yorkshire buildings recognised for their architectural excellence, Blackburn Wing is renowned for its high-quality construction, its sensitivity to nature and feeling of connection with its surroundings. 8 www.q-railing.com

Lighting up leisure This new swimming pool at Immingham includes some of the best examples of how the Kalwall translucent daylighting system is used for leisure and sport activities. The ÂŁ1.45m transformation and creation of this stunning facility was designed by ENGIE. It includes Kalwall cladding for all the walls in the new fitness suite and exercise studio.
T
he choice of the Kalwall mirrors specification is of the same cladding several years ago for the adjacent Oasis Academy where the system is used for both roof and wall applications. This brings a sense of uniformity and symmetry across both sites.
One of the main attractions of specifying high-performance Kalwall is its unique effect on both the interior and exterior. Internally, rooms are bathed with diffused natural daylight which creates a stimulating and healthy exercising environment. While being translucent, it also offers privacy.
Images: Above: Externally, the elevations appear crisp, simple and inviting Below left: Internally, rooms are bathed with diffused natural daylight which creates a stimulating and healthy exercising environment
Externally, the elevations appear crisp, simple and inviting. When illuminated at night, Kalwall will glow softly presenting a striking external appearance. Unlike conventional glazing, highly insulating Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. In addition, the even distribution and deep penetration of light through Kalwall means less artificial lighting is needed thereby reducing energy costs. Kalwall is distributed in England,Wales and Northern Ireland by Structura UK, a leading supplier, fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling, rainscreens, glass atria, windows and other architectural glass building products. The company has had all three of its ISO certifications successfully renewed for three years: OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification and ISO 9001 Quality Management certification. 8 www.structura-uk.com/kalwall * kalwall@structura.co.uk ( 01233

Glass & Glazing Images: Left: The system is suitable for high-end residential, institutional and, as in the case of Shepherd’s Bush Road, commercial applications Below: The character of 184 Shepherd’s Bush Road’s broad frontage has been retained with Crittall large form Berkeley windows
Crittall helps maintain ‘industrial heritage’ of striking London landmark A new landmark headquarters building in West London has been created using Crittall windows to reflect its historical context and satisfy conservation requirements.
1
84 Shepherd’s Bush Road is a striking redevelopment of a Grade II Listed garage and showroom originally constructed for the Ford Motor Company. Erected in 1915-16, the building was designed by Manchester-based Architect, Charles Heathcote, who drew on contemporary American practice utilising, what was then, a pioneering engineering solution to structural framework. The resulting reinforced concrete frame and modular plan of the threestorey structure strongly influenced architects Collado Collins in its design for the new building. The character of the building’s broad frontage has been retained – an important consideration because of its listing and its location in a conservation area – with Crittall large form Berkeley windows providing a significant visual aspect in the street scene. The Berkeley was originally created in order to replace existing 1920s and 1930s steel
18
windows that were predominantly single pane leaded glass, exterior putty glazed. With the Berkeley, Crittall developed an entirely new series of hot rolled sections, where a solid steel chamfer replicates exterior putty glazing, whilst the interior glazing improves access for reglazing and security. Berkeley offers an ideal solution for both replacement projects and new construction where minimum sightlines, maximum daylight, and fine details are desired. The system is suitable for high-end residential, institutional and, as in the case of Shepherd’s Bush Road, commercial applications. maintain the industrial heritage of the building and the surrounding area, whilst proposing a sleek and contemporary aesthetic. The use of innovative techniques to inform and influence the design is something that we believed could really enhance the site.” In order to meet the requirements of the project, Crittall Windows tackled a number of challenges associated with the physical size and weight of the Berkeley units specified. So as to optimise capacity to deal with the quantity required by the contract, the company utilised a newly-installed piece of equipment – its 4 axis CNC Machining Centre – which ensured that consistently accurate machined components could be produced with short lead times, assisting the flow of the product so as to meet the stringent on time needs of the installation programme. The 115,000ft2 office building has now been occupied by customer science company Dunnhumby as its European headquarters. 8 www.crittall-windows.co.uk * hq@crittall-windows.co.uk ( 01376
