he Comar range of solutions, Comar 5P.i and Comar 9P.i High Performance window systems, offers specifiers a comprehensive single source solution that achieves an increased range of window sizes. To achieve this Comar Systems has two profile ranges available: standard and heavy duty, Comar 9P.i has a top projected casement window system with slim 84mm profiles that offers maximum heights of 2500mm. Comar 9P.i Tilt and Turn offers side hung, bottom hung or tilt and turn at a maximum height of 2400mm. Comar 9P.i Parallel Opening offers sizes of up to 3000mm. Depending on the type of build, these configurations can offer a solution for maximum airexchange, smoke ventilation and restricted ventilation with lockable handles for cleaning inside and outside. Comar 9P.i also offers optimum heightened performance in terms of weather and security. Comar 9P.i windows achieved market leading results in terms of water tightness at 900Pa; this ensures that even in the most demanding locations Comar 9P.i will maintain its water integrity.
Security concerns are alleviated with the system exceeding the requirements of PAS 24:2012. Added to this, Comar 5P.i, Comar 9P.i and Comar 5P.i ECO windows hold Kite-marks for both systems supply and security. Comar is also a Secured by Design license holder for its window systems. With regard to Document L, Comar 9P.i has been designed to create a futureproof solution. Comar 9P.i incorporates Comar’s trademarked P.i Polyamide Insulation, creating a thermal break of 34mm. This high performance P.i can be augmented with thermal foam, offering even lower U-values. Comar’s Technical Department back this up with project specific U-values and modelling. With the latest enhancements Comar 9P.i tilt turn can achieve a U-value of 0.99 for a CEN size window and for a CEN size Comar 9P.i fixed light, 0.76. Comar 5P.i ECO achieves a Green Guide rating of ‘A+’, providing points for BREEAM ratings and an ‘A’ Grade Window Energy Ratings (WER) with a standard double glazed unit. The windows can be stand alone, but they also have their own high performance framing system, which offers ladder or mitre frame construction in 80mm or 120mm sections. This allows the completion of floor to ceiling window wall glazing, designed with a maximum height (depending on wind loading) of up to 3000mm. Comar 9P.i provides a value engineered solution by using the framing as an outerframe. In effect, Comar 9P.i reduces the cost of opening vents into framing by a third. To complete this extensive solution, Comar 9P.i offers two door options: rebated and rebated with anti-finger trap stile. These door sets are available in single or double, open-in and open-out and have surpassed the requirements of PAS 23 at 600Pa for air and water and PAS 24:2012 enhanced security. Again, the doors offer a stand-alone option as well as seamless integration into a framed facade. Working with architects Comar currently has a range of profiles in development for project specific solutions that will be added into its standard range. This provides specifiers with the reassurance that Comar will develop new profiles to achieve even their most demanding design briefs, now and in the future.

The MCIAT Professional Assessment
– a new qualifying route What is the MCIAT Professional Assessment?
The MCIAT Professional Assessment is a flexible, rigorous, robust and quality assured qualifying process, based on performance and designed to recognise the diversity of Architectural Technology. Candidates must provide an in-depth critical analysis clearly summarising their professional experience. This should be a reflective report and should refer to challenges and successes encountered whilst working on projects and how any issues were resolved. Applicants should also undertake a self-evaluation highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in relation to their area(s) of practice. The Professional Assessment process is based on four core competencies: • Designing • Managing • Practising • Developing (self)
Who can apply for the MCIAT Professional Assessment? Any applicant working in or on, for example, academia, general practice, component design, refurbishment, small residential projects, large commercial projects etc within Architectural Technology, should be able to apply their own experience to the Professional Assessment process, but they must hold one of the following membership grades: ACIAT, TCIAT or profile candidate. Each application will be assessed on its merit. However, each applicant will need to demonstrate a sufficient level of knowledge and understanding and professional competence/experience in relation to their sphere/s of practice and demonstrate to the Institute they can meet the expectations of a Chartered Architectural Technologist, MCIAT.
How much does it cost? To apply for the Professional Assessment, applicants are required to pay £300 for the assessment of the application and the Professional Assessment Interview.

When Harold Wilson Court, an 11-storey building comprising 43 one-bedroom flats on Leeds Road in Huddersfield, was originally ear-marked for refurbishment the target was for affordable warmth and cheaper energy costs for its residents.
F
unding from the Yorkshire & Humber European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007-2013 as part of the BIG Energy Upgrade programme, enabled Kirklees Council and its ALMO, Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH), to complete elements of the refurbishment in line with the principles of the Passivhaus standard. The year-long renovation was designed by Watson Batty architects. As part of the original brief the windows needed to achieve a U-value of 1.4 W/m2K but under the guidelines of Passivhaus the windows had to get down to a reading of 0.8 W/m2K. Main Contractor, Clugston Construction was charged with procuring a product which met the designated U-value while also achieving a wind load capacity of 2000Pa; Profile 22 Approved Window Contractor Polar Windows was the only company to tender which said that this was possible. Rob Hawkins, Commercial Business Manager for Polar Windows explains how the team reached a solution: “Ordinarily, to gain a 0.8 U-value we would remove

the steel or aluminium reinforcement in the frame but in this instance, without the reinforcement and with no additional support the window wouldn’t be able to withstand the wind load pressure experienced at such a height. “We developed a product that would not only achieve a low U-value and wind load capacity but one that would also allow us to create quite large windows. This meant that the new windows would have a two-fold benefit for the residents – they would be draught-free and thermally efficient, and they would also let more light into the rooms; an important factor for resident well-being.”
Influential factors It was crucial during the technical design of the window system that Rob, Polar Windows’ Contracts Manager Carl Taylor, and site supervisor Mark Lee liaised with the other sub-contractors and suppliers to head-off any potential issues. For example the EWI in some areas of the building was up to 250mm thick and this had to be factored in when designing the window and planning the installation. The

solution was a triple-glazed casement window reinforced using a bolster bar fitted to the outside of the frame but inside of the mullion. A total of 150 windows have been installed at Harold Wilson Court but this wasn’t all that Polar Windows had to contend with. In addition to supplying balcony doors which had to adhere to the same wind load capacity and U-value as the windows; fire entrance doors and a bespoke roof access door, the fabricator also had to install the Profile 22 curtain walling system into the stairwell area. Speaking about the transformation, Dave Woodhead, KNH Contracts Manager, said: “The new homes are currently being let to people on the Kirklees housing register and offer the latest in affordable, energy efficient, secure and modern living. Harold Wilson Court is a bespoke building and sets precedence for other social housing providers and landlords; this tower block is proof that a truly thermally efficient refurbishment is possible.”

Smart secures buildings’ heritage The recent launch of Smart Architectural Aluminium’s Alitherm Heritage door reinforced the company’s position as one of the leading suppliers of aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling systems to sensitive refurbishment projects throughout the UK.
T
he new Alitherm Heritage door shares the same characteristics and features of the company’s established Evolution window range, which has been used in a number of renovation, refurbishment and heritage projects to replace traditional materials, providing a perfect solution for listed buildings and projects where planning or design demands dictate the specification of sympathetic replacement materials. The Alitherm Heritage door and Evolution window ranges both reflect the slim profiles and lines of traditional steel doors and windows – but with a ‘B’ Window Energy Rating, the systems combine elegant aesthetics with outstanding thermal performance.With slim, thermally-broken profiles, the windows are available in a number of
formats, including fixed-pane, sash and casement options, each designed to be built as a series of horizontal modules which can be stacked using couplers to form a multi-part window. Both door and window ranges are available in either single or dual polyester powder coated finishes and have been weather tested in accordance with BS6375: Part 1. Three recently completed projects which have been designed, manufactured and installed by Avdon Bristol Limited, a Smart specialist partner, demonstrate the benefits of Smart’s heritage systems, with social housing, student accommodation and visitor centre projects all benefiting from these modern materials. Situated on the edge of the Olympic Park in Bow, East London, the Taylor Place development completed by the East

Thames Group, consists of 158 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Located on the site of a former chocolate factory and warehouse which was originally built in 1897, this 16-storey mixed residential and commercial development also features studios for local artists, film makers and designers. Avdon manufactured, supplied and installed materials for the refurbishment part of this project. To retain the design style of the original structure which featured steel windows, green polyester powder-coated Smart Evolution windows were specified for the refurbishment project, with a combination of casement, top-hung and side-hung units installed. On the building’s front elevation, arch-headed windows were set back into the original brickwork reveals to maintain the building’s traditional

building. Smart also supplied the entrance doors and framing system for the ground floor (in a brown finish) with the glazed panels featuring a unique selection of ‘etched’ drawings depicting various local scenes. The whole glazing scheme helped contribute to the achievement of a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’. Amongst a number of other projects in Bristol, Smart windows and doors were also specified for the recently completed ss Great Britain visitor centre.

Completing the project, Smart’s commercial door and framing system was used for the main entrance on the ground floor and the company’s Visoline doors and tilt and turn windows were installed into a new steel frame extension constructed on the building’s roof to provide additional accommodation. In Bristol, a student accommodation building at 33 Colston Street was acquired by the city’s university in 2009 and underwent a complete refurbishment prior to accepting students for the first time in 2011. Originally built in the 1930s, the red brick building had been home to Bristol’s YMCA hostel until the freehold was bought by the University who then carried out a £6m refurbishment programme to provide 121 study bedrooms and communal areas for students. Again, Smart Evolution windows were specified for the project, the lines exactly matching the original steel windows that had been a feature of the building’s design. The upper floor casement windows were installed in a white polyester powder coated finish, and incorporated acoustic night vents to help maintain air flow while keeping external noise out of the
This high profile project, which was completed in 2010, was part new-build and part refurbishment, with the scheme ultimately delivering a new visitor centre and museum on the site as well as 200 new apartments. The new building was designed to reflect Brunel’s original Steam Engine Factory that was built in the 1830s, with the brickwork and window and door detailing echoing its original features. A combination of some 600 Smart Visoline tilt & turn and casement windows and Visoline doors, was installed in the building, with the window combination design producing the look of ‘dummy doors’ on the building’s balconies. The front elevation also appears to feature arch-headed windows, although these are actually square-headed on the inside, with feature panels on the external face forming the arch – a unique design concept developed by Avdon. Internally, the building’s walkways feature narrow window ‘strips’ in the kitchens of the apartments, allowing light and air into rooms, without compromising privacy. With the refurbishment and renovation sector continuing to grow, it’s clear that Smart has both the products and the proven expertise to deliver projects that provide the performance benefits of modern materials with the appropriate aesthetics required for sensitive locations.

Positive steps to learning

he complete project comprises a new main entrance into the building off Gosford Street, external repaving, a full refit of the first floor of the triangle area, and a complete refurbishment of the square end, adjacent to Sir William Lyons building. A significant element of this project has been the infilling of the existing courtyard to create an informal learning and social space with a feature glazed roof. Q-railing’s recommended installer, Tri-Dev, was tasked with designing and installing a new staircase, a balustrade surrounding the atrium area, and the refurbishment of an existing staircase. The atrium will create a cafe and breakout space wrapped with teaching rooms and academic workspace.
Stylish environment The refurbishment had to be carried out over a 9-week period to coincide with the academic break in order for the building to open in time for fresher’s week. The solution comprised a range of high-quality stainless steel and glass products combining to give stylish aesthetics that created the contemporary working environment sought by the university. Tri-Dev specified Q-railing Easy Glass Slim, a frameless glass balustrade system

that provides complete transparency. It was the ideal solution to create an airy, open working environment. A completely modular system, Easy Glass Slim is clean and quick to install, imperative when a tight deadline has to be met.
