Balustrade specialist, Q-railing recently completed an installation on an existing residential apartment development made up of three separate blocks, situated in West Bay, Dorset.
T
he initial enquiry was made to Q-railing by Morgan Sindall, appointed by Zurich insurance to provide a specification to replace all of the existing badly corroded Mild steel powder coated balustrades. Q-railing worked closely with the BSSA and the Aluminium federation to develop and present a solution to this potentially troublesome specification. The client wanted a guarantee that Q-railing products, and more specifically the materials they are made from, would withstand the extreme coastal environment they would be subjected to. The apartment balconies consisted of Easy Glass Slim top mount, MOD 6904 glass clamps with rubber set for 19mm toughened monolithic glass. The Channel was clad both sides using 316 grade mirror polished flashings. Monolithic toughened glass panels held in place using MOD 22 Glass clamps. For the ground floor Ellipse Cafe, the team specified Easy Glass 3KN base shoe, top mounted with rubber set for 21.52mm, toughened laminated glass, with 316 grade mirror polished flashings. Q-railing worked closely with the residents providing them with sample products. Written statements from material professionals were also obtained to satisfy the insurance company of the high quality and suitability of Q-railing products. The glass specification was also upgraded from 15mm Monolithic toughened glass up to 19mm Monolithic toughened glass and the handrail tied back to the structural columns to ensure maximum safety when hit with extreme winter storms. Q-railing Recommended Installer WM Ironwork, worked in partnership with Morgan Sindall to co-ordinate the removal of the existing balustrades with

Doors, Windows & Balustrades
Bespoke balustrades for commercial and residential From making the most of stunning views on residential balconies and terraces to creating spacious and welcoming environments in commercial offices, the design of balustrade can provide the essential finish to any interior and exterior property.
I
n the heart of London, companies are expanding and developing their offices to fit their high-end brand by creating a place not just to work but also to entertain their valued clients. Instead of a low budget refurbishment, many companies are investing in greater interiors, features and furniture to boost their company image. The use of glass balustrade has become popular due to its contemporary appearance. Once installed, glass can visually suggest a sense of increased space and open plan living, where natural and interior lighting can travel through the crystal clear panels. In turn, this creates a brighter environment, which is ideal for both offices and home interiors. Similarly, polished metal balusters and fixings catch the light and reflect it around the room providing a secondary light source. More frequent in residential homes, a baluster design can complement existing features around a home or create a brand new, unique style that can be built upon. The design of a property is not just concentrating on the interior, it is also evolving the exterior to deliver an appearance that is aesthetically pleasing. In the same way glass balustrade provides a sense of space inside, it also does outside. By using low iron glass balustrade a property
can ensure the views off of its balcony or terrace is uninterrupted. Once chosen, a balustrade can be enhanced with the choice of handrail finish and positioning. Now in 2015, the popular materials including brass, stainless steel, walnut timber, leathers and other animal skins are becoming increasingly more fashionable within interior design. These mentioned materials are very good at complementing raw materials and surfaces such as concrete and rusted steels.Trendy bars, restaurants, offices, retail stores and even residential homes are displaying this new raw interior style. The most common example being Urban Outfitters. With experience working in both commercial and residential environments, CANAL Architectural manufactures bespoke staircases, balustrades and handrails, which is installed throughout the UK and abroad by their own installation teams. CANAL has various product examples and an extensive materials collection in its East Central London Showroom, enabling a tailored service built around you.

he largest sponsored Academy in the UK,Thomas Deacon opened its doors in 2007. Designed to accommodate children from the ages of 7-18 years, it is located on a purpose built 43-acre campus with unrivalled sports facilities and delivers a modern, forward thinking approach to education. TORMAX secured the contract to automate a number of key internal swing doors located throughout the school buildings. “The entire facility has been carefully designed to ensure clear access for all staff and pupils,” confirms Mick Crossley, Deputy Facilities Manager at the Academy. “The decision to further automate these internal entrances reflects our continuing drive to improve our environment.” Designed in-house at the head offices
in Switzerland, TORMAX iMotion motors have been cleverly engineered without the elements that generally wear out over time, such as gears and brushes. This ensures outstanding reliability, low maintenance requirements and also one of the best life expectancies on the market today. iMotion technology also ticks the green box making it a sustainable solution too, an important consideration for the Thomas Deacon Academy. Not only are the operators almost entirely manufactured using recyclable material but all components meet current RoHS standards, with no hazardous materials such as lead, or mercury being utilised. Further reducing carbon footprint, iMotion operators automatically minimise energy consumption at all times. The high

The perfect blend Mumford & Wood Conservation timber windows and doors have been architecturally specified in the remodelling of a traditional farmhouse typical of the region. Built around 1880, this red brick property has been significantly extended to the rear although the original building remains structurally unchanged. T
he property had been previously added to in 1970 with a singlestorey, flat roof extension with very little consideration given to the style or thermal performance of the building. In 2012 a new two-storey rear wing was added which has greatly enhanced the aesthetics of the building that now boasts elaborate use of insulation, replacement timber windows and extensive use of local oak for flooring and other interior details. Conservation double glazed box sash windows with traditional cords and weights have been installed throughout the new wing while a smart lean-to styled garden room structure, with glazed roof, French doors and fixed glazed side panels, create a bright and relaxing informal day-room. This has been finished with three coats of high quality micro-porous paint in a shade of green from the RAL Classic collection. Elegant single glazed box sash windows remain only in the original structure of the building which provides spacious formal reception rooms, an attractive hall and gallery,

and two large bedrooms that overlook a secluded and mature garden and drive. “The new wing was added in 2012 and I must pay tribute to my architects, Daniel Connal Partnership, who took care of every detail of the build and for introducing me to Mumford & Wood,” says homeowner Nick Deane.“The rooms with double glazed windows are very comfortable and they have made a huge impact on our energy consumption in this large property.” One single glazed window in the lounge was replaced, from necessity, with an elegant double glazed feature bay window consisting of a central sliding sash flanked either side with fixed sash windows to retain visual consistency. “The bay blends perfectly with the original window in the same room.Together with part double glazing and an efficient new log burner we’re almost too hot,” continues Nick.“We now have all the benefits of 21st century thermal performance as well as improved aesthetics with windows of different ages that complement each other very well.

Visitors can’t easily identify old from new which is very satisfactory.” The farmhouse is one of several on the Estate that was sold off to sitting tenants in 1920 and was sold again in 1964. The property remains in the family and no attention to detail has been spared in the recent construction. Old and new handmade bricks were matched, bonding patterns replicated and arched soldier courses over door and window openings have been expertly created. Doors and windows in the established Conservation range provide a coordinated collection of thermally efficient products with superior aesthetics.A combination of modern manufacturing technology in accordance with the British Woodworking Federation’s Wood Window Alliance standards is combined with authentic period detailing that has earned the brand award-winning status. All products are made in England from the finest engineered, clear grade, sustainably sourced timber and have an expected life of 60 years or more. All products are internally glazed for added security and the new colour match and dual colour paint or stain facility is a popular option. Conservation windows and doors achieve exceptional U-values which far exceed the requirements of current Part L Building Regulations’ and are BRE A+ rated. They also carry the BSI Kitemark, are Energy Saving Trust listed and many products carry Secured by Design accreditation.

REHAU showcases its ‘KnowHau’
REHAU used the recent Vision London event at Olympia to showcase to architects, specifiers and clients the breadth and depth of its energy efficient commercial fenestration solutions.
A
lthough recognised as one of the UK’s leading PVC-U systems suppliers, at Vision, REHAU also demonstrated its innovative composite solutions for curtain walling and Passivhaus certified window systems. REHAU offers what it calls a ‘complete’ system in PVC-U, branded REHAU TOTAL70. This includes a huge range of profiles which can be used to fabricate virtually any window style in double or triple glazing – from standard casements to fully reversible and tilt and turn windows. Hugely versatile, it even includes the option of flush fitting windows in PVC-U for contemporary new build applications and a range of outer frames for use with composite doors. Available in either a chamfered or sculptured option, REHAU TOTAL70 can also be specified in a vast range of colours. REHAU offers 22 different foiled colours, including six variations of the most popular grey option, and more than 150 RAL colours in its Acyl II acrylic coating system.
Alongside REHAU TOTAL70, REHAU’s range of specialist composite solutions have been designed to meet the specific requirements of the commercial sector. This includes the popular REHAU Polytec 50 composite curtain walling system, which has just gained Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT) approval, meaning it can be used in the vast majority of new build applications, including those covered by the NHBC Standards Chapter 6.9. REHAU Polytec 50 is a box steel based system with an aluminium faced exterior and PVC faced interior. Passivhaus certified, it is designed to compete head on with aluminium in any application where there is a requirement for an attractive facade providing high levels of thermal insulation and weather performance. Arguably even more innovative is REHAU’s range of window systems extruded in its RAU-FIPRO fibre composite material. This high performance, high strength material is similar to that
used in aircraft design and Formula 1 race cars and gives these window systems much higher torsional stiffness than can be achieved with traditional PVC-U. As a result, in most frames there is no requirement for metal reinforcement so there are none of the usual thermal bridges through which energy can be lost and much higher thermal performance can be achieved. In RAU-FIPRO, REHAU offers the Passivhaus certified GENEO window system for tilt and turn windows and doors and the Scandinavian REHAU Nordic Design Plus flush fit window system, which can be used either in contemporary multioccupancy settings or as a replacement for flush fitting timber in traditional cottage type properties. Vision was the first showing in the UK of a new version of GENEO with an aluminium top (ALU-TOP).This has an aluminium cladding applied to the exterior giving the system all of the strength and thermal performance benefits of RAUFIPRO combined with the contemporary aesthetics of aluminium. REHAU employs a team of commercial experts with their own brand of ‘KnowHau’ to advise specifiers not just on the most appropriate system and style for each application, but also on thermal performance, security, planning constraints, and of course cost.

Vicaima staining makes its mark A major development for Barratt London alongside the River Thames in South West London has been fitted with doors, panelling and skirting from the Vicaima range of stained Oak veneers.
T
he ambitious and visionary development at Fulham Wharf covers some 3.2 hectares and includes the transformation of an existing Sainsbury store and derelict warehouses into a modern retail and residential hub with riverside luxury living and cultivated green space. The development also benefits from cafes, restaurants and river front access to create a harmonious environment. The Barratt London development comprises one-, two-, three-, four-, five- and six-bedroom luxury apartments, penthouses and townhouses. Specialist Joinery fit-out Contractors Atlantic Contracts, worked with the Vicaima Special Projects team from conception through to installation, thus ensuring the exacting needs of the project were fulfilled in every way. For the private apartments, the fit out called for fire and security entrance doors with a complex matching wall panel. This was also carried through to the communal lobby areas and lift surrounds. The finish chosen was a Vicaima white washed Oak stain, which was supplied as part of the Portaro SBD door assembly, together with matching panels and skirting. The social housing was no less luxurious and saw

Fulham Riverside was a classic example of how Vicaima special projects offer developers and contractors with tangible benefits and real on site solutions to their door and associated joinery requirements. As Danny Miller, Site Manager of Atlantic Contracts put it, ‘we found working with Vicaima made all the difference. They have the experience to understand our goals and worked with us every step of the way to ensure even the smallest issues were dealt with promptly, giving us the peace of mind to know we could rely on their help for a successful project conclusion’. Aluminium: the trusted building material Aluminium is the ubiquitous construction material, constantly evolving with design. It is a building material that offers the designer reassurance as well as catering for new demands. For construction professionals gaining a grasp of its capability is a future proof skill.
D
evelopments in 3D modelling and extrusion now mean that aluminium is the building material which literally pushes the envelope to the forefront of design. Not only is design aspiration catered for but this is a material which is both sustainable and offers longevity. In a Delft University pan-European study 86% of aluminium used in the old Wembley stadium was recycled and reclaimed. Longevity and lifecycle analysis is also favourable with standard 25-year guarantees for polyester powder coated aluminium and 35 year guarantees for anodised applications. The lifespan of aluminium, if properly maintained, can be indefinite: the top of the Empire State Building was one of the first examples of anodised aluminium and is still a gleaming, eye catching feature today. If one considers the building envelope integrating large glazed screens, canopies, windows and focal entrance points all can be achieved through installing and integrating, aluminium ground floor treatment, curtain walling, windows and doors. The envelope can be expanded with roof glazing to incorporate pitched, barrelled or pyramid vaults. These areas can be as sleek as the designer requires.Aluminium naturally has high strength to weight ratios so large glazed spans and multi-storey applications can be achieved with slim sight-lines.The
opportunity to polyester powder coat or anodise means that a multitude of shades can provide contrast or minimal visibility to the project. Panels and glass also offer an amazing area of options. Glass can be mirrored or tinted to suit the envelope, whereas panels can provide solid colour or a mirrored glass effect.Aluminium has the ability to integrate both panels and glass into the same facade; a variety of gaskets ensure that most applications can be catered for. Aluminium is robust and is ideal for high traffic applications, such as retail, school or hospital. If one considers entrance doors, available in configurations such as swing, sliding, sliding/folding, the robust profiles ensure longevity even with endless open and closing cycles. Windows also offer a myriad of options to cater specifically for the application. Tilt and turn, top-swing reversible, sliding and pivot windows have been around for many years with aluminium Systems Houses working closely with the gearing manufacturers which means that these are tried and tested solutions for providing ventilation without jeopardising security. In multi-storey applications the configuration selected, for instance top-swing reversible or pivot, has options to fully reverse the external surface to allow cleaning from the inside.Tilt/Turn windows allow the window

to open-in for cleaning. In essence aluminium is the building material that, through its long use, has developed to provide function, form and solutions for even the most demanding projects. Systems Houses, such as Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, continually develop and refine their profile catalogues to meet the demands of cutting edge designers, providing support and calculation at any stage of the tender process. Now with improvements in glass and to keep up with Document L, systems can utilise thermal foam and increased thermal break technology to take performance to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6. With the EAA’s (European Aluminium Association) “Future Generations” initiative, aluminium’s long reputation as a recyclable material is gaining further exposure. Future Generations is a scheme which highlights that the use of aluminium is actually creating a bank of material that can be re-used and recycled in the future.Aluminium is a true “cradle-tocradle” material with a real end of life value.
