Floors, Walls & Ceilings
The rise of the baffle Walk into many offices, schools and universities now and look up. You’re likely to witness the use of rafts, baffles and fins in an arrangement of shapes and colours.
A
rchitects are specifying these alternative acoustic ceiling solutions because our buildings and use of space is changing.
Refurbishment Many old buildings and heritage properties are being converted into offices, hotels and restaurants. Clients like to retain the architectural features of these buildings because they add charm and character and for listed buildings, it is compulsory. A traditional suspended ceiling might hide these desirable features. Acoustic baffles can hang either vertically or horizontally to fit around exposed wooden beams, joists and high windows, working in harmony aesthetically.
Multipurpose spaces Because space is at a premium, architects are designing large, open spaces which have a number of uses. To enable these spaces to function harmoniously, controlling noise is paramount. High sound absorbent ceiling rafts provide the acoustics needed in particular areas. Rafts can be located around the noisier, more social areas to help control sound and prevent it from becoming a disturbance in areas where quiet and concentration is required.
Images: Above: Heradesign fins fitted to a glass ceiling have created a comfortable working environment for 400 workers at BBH advertising agency’s London HQ Below: Heradesign baffles are able to control the level of reverberation in the classrooms of Valley Invicta Primary School, helping to create a healthy learning environment
Thermal mass With the drive to conserve energy, emit less CO2 and lower costs, architects are using thick concrete soffits to store thermal energy required to heat and cool buildings. On the face of it, a concrete ceiling is going to cause real headaches when it comes to creating a healthy, sound environment. Baffles offer a practical solution because they allow air to circulate freely, enabling heat transfer to take place and, at the same time, provide acoustic control.
Aesthetic appeal Ceilings are playing a more prominent role in the design of a building. Rafts, baffles and fins offer flexible and stylish solutions. Available in a wide range of formations, they are fitted to the ceiling using suspension wires and hooks, which gives the impression they are floating in air. This allows the creation of elegant designs with colour providing further contrasting options. Architects are able to make a feature out of the ceiling and, at the same time, provide the necessary acoustic control to create truly unique interiors. 8 www.amfceilings.co.uk/heradesign * info@knaufamf.co.uk ( 0191

U
nlike traditional parquet staves which are glued down piece by piece, Kährs’ Chevron has a modern, plank format, measuring 1848 x 300 x 15mm, which is fast to install. The angled chevron pattern and ingenious ‘parallelogram’ short ends create the continuous V-shaped design, which is further emphasised by a bevelled edge. All boards are brushed to create a tactile lived-in look, which complements the warm white, weathered grey, classic brown and dark brown colour tones and the lively oak graining. Kährs Chevron has a multi-layered
construction, made up of a sustainable oak surface layer and a plywood core. This ecofriendly, engineered format makes the floor more stable and ideal for installation over underfloor heating. New Allura Flex 0.55 from Forbo as convenient as it is stylish Perfectly capturing the beauty of the natural world, Allura Flex 0.55, the new loose lay Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) collection from Forbo Flooring Systems, takes the trend for nature-inspired interiors to a new level.
N
atural designs are increasing in popularity across all sectors, and reclaimed wood and exposed stone are in high demand. Allura Flex 0.55 is right on-trend and offers authentic, realistic designs, featuring the grains, patterns and tones inherent within wood and stone. Aesthetics are not the only attraction; the loose lay format means that installation is quick, easy and costeffective. In the Allura Flex 0.55 Wood range there are 30 stylish options, including vintage wood designs and traditional, classic wood looks with a timeless appeal. The authentic, rustic tones of salvaged timber have been accurately represented, alongside refreshed colourful finishes that give the collection a modern edge. Deemed a ‘luxury’ surfacing material, natural stone has been used in interior design and decor for centuries. Within Forbo’s Allura Flex 0.55 Stone range, designers will find the lavish styling of marble together with contemporary stone designs, enabling specifiers to recreate this ever-popular look, but without the high costs associated with using quarried stone.
Allura Flex 0.55 floorcoverings are offered in a variety of formats to enhance their naturalistic designs. Stone designs are available in three square and rectangular slab sizes, whilst wood designs are offered in a choice of three plank formats to allow diverse and striking layouts to be created, including herringbone, chevron and wicker designs. Julie Dempster, Marketing Manager at Forbo Flooring Systems, comments: “This new loose lay LVT collection will have particular appeal in retail, leisure, office and hospitality environments. Designers looking to optimise the use of the finite space available are increasingly using floorcoverings of different textures, colours and characteristics to create different activity zones within open-plan areas. Aesthetically-pleasing modular floorcoverings that are quick and easy to fit offer an ideal solution. Allura Flex 0.55 vinyl tiles can be installed alongside carpet tiles and contractors can even use the same tackifier, which results in less time, cost and mess during installation.” 8 www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/alluraflex * info.flooring.uk@forbo.com ( 0844

Crown Trade paints complete environmental picture Crown Trade has reinforced its sustainability credentials with the introduction of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) across a range of its premium coatings.
F
our Crown Trade products now hold verified EPD certificates, in compliance with the European Standard EN 15804. These include Crown Trade’s Fastflow system, which was introduced into the marketplace last year and has already built a strong reputation in the specification sector for its ability to deliver all the benefits of an oil-based coating in a water-based formulation.
EPD certified additions The complete system, comprising Crown Trade Fastflow Primer Undercoat and Crown Trade Fastflow Gloss, has been assessed. Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt, trusted by specifiers across high traffic areas including healthcare, educational and housing environments, also has an EPD certificate. Featuring a super scrubbable finish, which allows repetitive cleaning with the added benefit of excellent stain resistance, Crown Trade Clean Extreme also extends maintenance cycles by returning
10
to an ‘as new’ condition after cleaning – reducing the need for costly redecoration. Finally, another popular choice, Crown Trade Matt Vinyl, a premium quality flat matt emulsion for interior use on wall and ceiling surfaces, has a EPD certificate too.
Environmental impact assessment Debbie Orr, Marketing Manager for trade brands at Crown Paints, said: “The EPDs are full life cycle assessments of the environmental impacts of the products from raw materials and manufacturing, through use to end of life. “They are carried out using the standardised method defined by EN 15804. Each EPD is independently verified to ensure that the data, data handling and resulting report are reliable, giving specifiers and architects confidence in their credibility. “The EPDs are aligned with the environmental requirements of BREEAM and LEED and also meet the requirements

of the SKA rating scheme, meaning these Crown Trade products can be confidently specified in projects where environmental considerations are key.” BRE, a world leader in certifying sustainable products, operates the EPD verification scheme to allow product manufacturers to communicate their sustainability credentials to customers. Dr Shamir Ghumra,Associate Director at BRE, said:“Crown Paints has shown great leadership by joining the growing number of companies who are choosing to provide the market with externally verified EPD to EN 15804. “Having access to more transparent and credible environmental data in the supply chain will help to create stronger product specifications which will encourage a more widespread use of EPD.”
Social responsibility The development of the EPDs represents another chapter in Crown Paints awardwinning sustainability journey. Since 2008, Crown Paints, which manufactures Crown Trade, has run its sustainability programme, Earthbalance, with a focus on changing the way the company does business in terms of social responsibility, the environment and the economy, rather than just focusing on the application of environmental benefits to a few niche products, or compromising on the quality of products to achieve green goals. Earthbalance has won a string of awards, most recently the Sustainability accolade at the Lloyds Bank’s National Business Awards, and has a meaningful impact in areas including the support of young people/apprenticeships, the circular economy (through a social enterprise-led waste recycling initiative), carbon reduction and ethical sourcing of materials. 8 www.crowntrade.co.uk

o deep clean porcelain and ceramics, including anti-slip tiles with pronounced high and low spots, options include FILAPS87. Used neat, the product removes stubborn coloured, organic stains. When diluted, it deep cleans porcelain and ceramics, as well as unpolished stone and cement tiles.
It is also particularly effective for textured surfaces with a dirt and residue build-up, where it provides a high-performance clean, restoring anti-slip ratings. For acid-sensitive surfaces, other options include best-selling FILA Cleaner, a concentrated neutral detergent that can also be used at a variety of dilutions to tackle different renovation issues.
Images: Above: FILA surface care solutions have been specified for an extensive cleaning project at London’s Baker Street Tube station. The project, which was carried out by Cleshar, included deep cleaning of the Tube station’s wall and floors. FILA treatments specified included FILAPS87 and FILA Cleaner Below left: All products are designed to provide high coverage and performance, whilst providing a safe application and protecting original surface characteristics
After renovation, surfaces that require sealing can be treated with FILAMP90 ECO PLUS, a solvent-free protector that forms part of FILA’s award-winning Green Line. The LEED-approved sealer which is designed for natural stone and polished porcelain surfaces, can be applied internally and externally, and is suitable for use on food contact surfaces. As well as safety and ecobenefits, FILAMP90 ECO PLUS can be applied, in just one application, to surfaces with residual moisture, so it cuts application time by up to 80%. To prevent future dirt build-up on textured and natural unglazed porcelain, FILA has also developed FILASTOP DIRT. The UV-resistant treatment chemically bonds without leaving a film or altering the material’s original degree of slipperiness, as proven in tests conforming to the B.C.R.A. and ASTMC 1028- 2007 methods, and in the English Standard BS 7976 Pendulum tests. FILA’s range includes 36 surface care treatments, from stone and ceramic stain proofers, to grout protectors and cleaners. All production is supported by FILA’s ISO 14001:2014 certification and the range is recommended by 220+ leading tile manufacturers and stone suppliers. 8 www.filasolutions.com/en * filauk@filasolutions.com ( 01584

Floors, Walls & Ceilings Images: Left: Yeoman Shield’s new Guardian Twin Handrail was chosen in light green to coordinate with an existing colour scheme Below: The timber handrail complemented the wood doors and frame work already in situ along the corridor
Yeoman Shield gives a helping hand Bradford Royal Infirmary – part of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and serving a population of 500,000 people – was the first to take delivery of products from Yeoman Shield’s new range of Guardian Handrails.
T
he hospital found that they were persistently having to carry out repair and redecoration of the walls in the Service Corridor leading to its ENT Out Patients Unit. As one of the main thoroughfares through the hospital building, the walls were being marked and damage was being caused to the plaster work from the impact of heavily laden trolleys and carts as well as from the everyday passing by of staff, patients and visitors. The Service Corridor also slopes from one end to the other with changes in direction. Already in place was an old metal handrail which was looking worse for wear with many layers of paint flaking off from being continually hit with passing wheeled equipment. For these reasons it was not just a system to protect the walls that was required but one that needed to fulfill the requirements of a durable handrail. Yeoman Shield has recently developed a new range of Guardian Handrails which includes the original 125mm Guardian Handrail and now with the addition of the
12
new Guardian Twin Handrail as well as a 50mm dia. handrail. The new range was introduced to the estates team at Bradford Royal Infirmary during a visit from Yeoman Shield’s Area Sales Manager who discussed the products, options and was able to provided visual samples. After Yeoman Shield carried out a free site survey it was concluded that the solution to Bradford Royal’s corridor damage came in the form of Yeoman Shield’s new Guardian Twin Handrail. The new system consists of an upper 50mm diameter handrail which can be supplied as either a solid timber, stainless steel or PVCu sleeved aluminium rail, connected to the lower protection rail. Available in a choice of colours to help blend into interior designs, Bradford Royal Infirmary chose the PVCu option for the upper rail in light green to co-ordinate with an existing colour scheme. The lower rail, 200mm deep, was also supplied in light green and both were completed with Stop Ends, Wall Returns and Corners in cream.

The installation of the Twin Handrail will help Bradford Royal with its maintenance budgets by reducing greatly the requirement for the repair and redecoration of the walls as well as avoiding the replacement of the handrail, proving the product to be a sound ecological and economical investment. The Guardian Twin Handrail was installed by Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives to both sides of the service corridor. “This is a great new product and was the perfect answer to our damage problem,” commented Thomas Molloy,Architectural Assistant at the hospital.“It was fitted by Yeoman Shield’s team with respect and the minimum of fuss in a ‘live’ area allowing the hospital to continue with its everyday business.” Also the main corridor of the ENT Out Patients Department was lacking a handrail product and due to the nature of clients that visited this clinic that might need an aid in walking Bradford Royal chose another product from the new Yeoman Shield range to fulfil the requirement. The Guardian 50mm Handrail, a single circular easy to grip rail in timber, was installed to the wall on one side of the corridor by Yeoman Shield’s fixing team. Fitted on strong and durable PVCu Cream injection moulded brackets the timber handrail, which is warm and smooth to the touch, also complemented the wood doors and frame work already in situ along the corridor. The different styles, colours and materials available in Yeoman Shield’s New Guardian Handrail range guarantees that they can provide a handrail system to help satisfy customer requirements.

Floors, Walls & Ceilings Images: Left: The extreme wear-resistance and longevity of rubber floor coverings make a decisive contribution to the sustainability of buildings Below left: Rubber floor coverings from nora systems are made from high-quality materials and became the first ever resilient floor coverings to be awarded the ‘Blue Angel for low-emissions’ eco-label
Sustainability begins with the floor The architecture of a building is determined by three factors: the facade, the walls and the floor. As a rule, these components of a building’s structure remain unchanged for decades.
I
nterior fittings present a differentiated picture; the colours of the walls or the wallpaper are often renewed at shorter intervals. Whereas, the floor covering lies in the building for many years, therefore needs to be durable, hard-wearing and sustainable.
of plasticizers or halogens and became the first ever resilient floor coverings to be awarded the ‘Blue Angel for low-emissions’ eco-label as long ago as 2006. This was followed by other international Green Design certificates.
Certified environmental compatibility
Contribution to the sustainability of buildings
The increasing worldwide demand for rubber floor coverings is attributable to both the strivings of planners to design ecologicallysound buildings, as well as to the usage of ecologically-safe building materials that is already being stipulated in tenders. Rubber floor coverings from nora systems are made from high-quality materials, devoid
Under increasing scrutiny in the construction sector is the sustainability of buildings. To evaluate this, not only the individual building products themselves, but the entire life cycle of the building is also taken into consideration, from the planning stage, right through to recycling and disposal. The pioneer of this holistic approach in Germany is the Sustainable Building Council
(DGNB), of which nora systems is one of the co-initiators and founding members. More and more, in the working environment, consideration is given to how the finishing materials chosen will impact the employees in the building. This impact can be felt in many ways. Optimised working conditions that promote greater creativity, more communication, contented, social employees and better performance are important factors in new or refurbished buildings. Acoustics, climate, lighting and space have to be harmonised with one another. Above all, it is the floors, alongside the walls, that are the stylistic elements with varying purposes in aesthetic designs. Not only do they have to be hard-wearing, but they also have to be convincing in their design and functionality. The extreme wear-resistance and longevity of rubber floor coverings, which still look practically new even after many years of intensive usage, make a decisive contribution to the sustainability of buildings.
Quality of the indoor air Modern buildings have more airtight shells than they used to, because more effective insulation is used for energy-saving purposes. Today, the exchange with outside air is 10 times less than it used to be 10 to 15 years ago. A consequence of this is that the contamination of indoor air is now four times higher than that of fresh air. In other words,we protect the environment and the climate with modern buildings that are built or refurbished using energy-saving measures. However, without emission-tested building materials, trained planners and craftsmen, we will create harmful pollutant cages. nora system blue combines nora’s lowemission rubber floor coverings with low-emission installation materials. All the system’s components have been awarded the Blue Angel eco-label and are also tested within the composite system. This eliminates the likelihood of any hazardous interaction between the single components and assures healthy indoor air. On account of its resounding success, nora system blue has recently also been introduced worldwide. 8 www.nora.com/uk * info-uk@nora.com ( 01788

Karndean Designflooring brings the ‘deep south’ to Hickory’s Smokehouse
Images: Above: In order to bring the warm, rustic and deep tones of the south indoors, Lingar Group opted for the traditional mid-brown tones of Art Select Santina Cherry in its main bar and restaurant area Below: Looking to separate an exclusive private dining area, Art Select Russet Oak Parquet has been used in a preformed shaker-style block pattern
When looking to bring the hues of the deep south to its first restaurant in the West Midlands, Hickory’s, the American-style smokehouse and BBQ restaurant chain, looked to luxury vinyl flooring specialist Karndean Designflooring for its authentic design.
I
nterestingly, the space at Wall Heath, just outside Wolverhampton, was once home to some of the entertainment world’s biggest names, including The Beatles, as the iconic Kingswinford Club. Transforming the building, Gary Carter, Project Director at Hickory’s called on its main contractor, Lingar Group, to suggest an authentic alternative to natural timber in a bid to deliver within budget. In order to bring the warm, rustic and deep tones of the south indoors, Lingar Group opted for the traditional mid-brown tones of Art Select Santina Cherry, with its sophisticated undertones of red, in its main bar and restaurant area. Looking to separate an exclusive private dining area, Art Select Russet Oak Parquet has been used in a preformed shaker-style block pattern. Tapping into the trend for reclaimed and repurposed materials, the group also added the distinctive weathered look of Van Gogh Vintage Pine, with its versatile mid-brown tones and distressed patches in a cooler grey, as a decorative wall installation. Gary explains: “Having always previously specified real wood, we were impressed

with the overall look and finish of Karndean Designflooring. Importantly, it meant we were able to stay in budget and maintain our signature, authentic look of the deep south. “As our largest and first flagship restaurant, we can be confident our Karndean flooring will withstand the high traffic expected, and be even easier to maintain and clean, than real timber.” Matthew Speck, Head of Commercial Sales at Karndean Designflooring, said: “It would have been a real shame for Hickory’s Smokehouse to lose the authentic look of real wood, especially as it complements the overall design concept and consistent feel across its UK restaurant chain. “Lingar Group and Hickory’s in-house design team have successfully transformed the space and introduced a contemporary edge, whilst maintaining the traditional warm, deep south roots.” Available with a recently extended 20-year commercial guarantee, Karndean’s Art Select Wood collection features 15 individual wood plank designs from its handcrafted Oak Royale and Oak Premier collections, as well as seven parquet options.

Style first with BIM for partitioning walls
Below: Style is the first company to make BIM objects for key elements of its DORMA range available on the NBS National BIM Library
Continuing its commitment to support the needs of the architectural community, Style is the first company to make BIM objects for key elements of its DORMA range of moveable wall systems available on the award-winning NBS National BIM Library.
N
BS-authored BIM objects can be used with confidence as, to be included, they must be consistent with the industry standard, with complete, reliable and precise product data that is in the correct format to allow full collaboration and information exchange throughout a project. BIM offers enormous improvements when it comes to saving time and money. It increases the accuracy of estimations, reworks, alterations and the avoidance of error due to the loss of information. “There is no doubt that BIM will shape the future of how buildings and construction projects are designed and specified,” comments Julian Sargent, Group Managing Director for
Style, the sole distributor for DORMA in the UK. “Placing them onto the NBS National BIM Library is an exciting industry first of which we are incredibly proud.” In packaging the BIM objects applicable to DORMA partitioning systems, particular value has been attached to ensuring simple, uncomplicated usage, allowing the objects to remain lean and lightweight.Where possible, therefore, graphical extras have been avoided, with the priority being firmly fixed on the technical features and functions of the items concerned. 8 www.style-partitions.co.uk

An automatic divide
Below: A moveable wall solution was installed to add flexibility to the main meeting room
Dividing the Canary Wharf office space of Boston Consulting Group, partitioning expert Style has installed DORMA’s Moveo ComfortDrive movable wall system. A fully automatic solution, the stretched fabric finished panels slide effortlessly into place at the press of a button, rapidly creating a solid divide with exceptional 55dB acoustics for privacy between the two areas.
“
W
e’re seeing a significant growth in specifications for fully automatic partitioning walls,” comments Julian Sargent, Style’s Group Managing Director. “The speed and flexibility they deliver allows the room configuration to be quickly changed, numerous times a day if required.” Style is the sole UK distributor for the DORMA range of moveable walls, of which key elements are now available as BIM files on the award-winning NBS National BIM Library. The Boston Consulting Group has 85 offices in 48 countries and more than 12,000 employees. At its Knowledge and Analytics Centre in London’s Canary Wharf, Style worked with main contractors, Bluu
Solutions, and architects, Create Interior Design, to design and install a moveable wall solution to add flexibility to the main meeting room. A very adaptable design, the Moveo system is available in almost any conceivable finish with additional features including acoustic sound absorption boards, magnetic display boards, dry wipe marker and projection surfaces, plus single or double inset pass doors can be included for ease of access. ComfortDrive automation is computer controlled, giving users confidence that all seals will automatically extend or retract to the appropriate point, through each stage of the operating cycle, avoiding potential damage caused by mishandling of the panels.

Floors, Walls & Ceilings Image: Left: PFP became a Green Omega last year on completion of its biggest Armstrong project to date – the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow – where 10,000m2 of mineral ceiling tile off-cuts were recycled over the two years
Armstrong Ceilings sets another recycling record A rapidly expanding network of Green Omegas (specialist subcontractors with specialist recycling expertise) has helped Armstrong Ceilings break its recycling records for the second year running. The manufacturer recycled a total of 142,000m2 last year, during which time, nine members of Armstrong’s 136-strong Omega network of approved installers proved their recycling expertise to such an extent that they qualified as Green Omegas.
T
hat 142,000m2 equates to 495 tonnes, or more than 528 skips, which would have cost contractors almost £100,000 in landfill tax. All of the returned material has been, or will be, used in the manufacture of new mineral ceiling tiles, saving the company (which does not charge for the service) more than £28,000 in virgin materials. And not only is the scheme saving contractors

money, the Green Omega accreditation is also making them more money. Installer PFP has been an Armstrong Omega since the millennium, while CAP Ceilings and Partitions has been an Omega since 2002. PFP Managing Director, Boyd Sinclair, said of the Omega scheme: “We can project ourselves better as a reputable installer of Armstrong products, which is of particular

benefit when we are competing against labour only subcontractors, as we do come across a number of main contractors trying to weigh up the choice between buying materials direct and using labour only subcontractors (self-employed operatives) versus ourselves to procure and install the materials. “Most labour only subcontractors would not be Armstrong Omega certified, and so, if we can demonstrate to the main contractor that we are a certified installer, and a green one at that, it makes a difference. It just gives us a bit of an edge against the competition.” The £12m turnover company became a Green Omega last year on completion of its biggest Armstrong project to date – the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow – where 10,000m2, or 35 tonnes, of mineral ceiling tile off-cuts were recycled over the two years for main contractor, Brookfield Multiplex. Similarly, CAP became a Green Omega last year. Of the Green Omega scheme, PFP’s Boyd Sinclair said: “Armstrong are streaks ahead of the competition when it comes to their commitment to recycling mineral ceilings within the industry. They have ensured that their distribution partners (our suppliers) are fully on board with the scheme and this allows us to work as a team to ensure waste is diverted from landfill. “As more and more main contractors are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, working with Armstrong allows us to present this as a selling point to the client, which places Armstrong’s products ahead of the competition and gives us an edge over the competition.” Gary Rice, CAP’s Director, added: “The support from Armstrong has certainly helped us to grow the business from ground zero to £8m.” And of being a Green Omega, he said: “We are looked upon more favourably by clients because we have the recycling system in place. It’s a no-brainer as there are no cost implications, but it helps us with cost reduction to a certain point.”

New church uses both divine and diffused light
Below: An important feature of the church is the use of highly insulating Kalwall translucent cladding
Trinity Methodist Church first opened in 1938 and created a landmark on a prominent site in East Grinstead, Sussex. CPL Architects of Eastbourne, which designed the more recent community halls, were also commissioned to design the newly-opened church building.
T
his multipurpose facility is a welcoming and inspiring place with increased capacity and flexibility for new expressions of worship, and for use as an entertainment and performance venue. Its modern, clean lines and striking appearance have created a new, enhanced focal point in the neighbourhood. An important feature is the use of highly insulating Kalwall translucent cladding. Inspired by the desire not only to flood the main church with light and, unlike glass, to retain some privacy, Kalwall also enhances the experience of the activities within, particularly at night when the church glows. It also incorporates glazed opening windows to provide natural ventilation,
while the focal point is a stunning 5m2 Kalwall roof pyramid, flooding the worship area with daylight from above. Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall eliminates shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. The system also enhances simplicity by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or solar control. Even on cloudy days, the building is flooded with natural diffused daylight, from both the cladding and the roof, which means less artificial lighting and therefore reduced costs. 8 www.structura-uk.com/kalwall * kalwall@structura.co.uk ( 01233

Quietly broadcasting at BBC Worldwide
Below: To ensure that noise was kept to a minimum, HOK architects specified Troldtekt acoustic tiles
The BBC TV Centre at Wood Lane, London, is world renowned for its television output. Completed in February last year, much of the interior was extensively redesigned by HOK architects, with the refurbishment and construction carried out by the BDL Group, one of the largest specialist dry-lining contractors in the UK.
O
ne of the key factors was to ensure that noise was kept to a minimum and reverberation time reduced to ensure a pleasant and calm environment over very large areas. The solution was high-performance Troldtekt acoustic panels which were used to line all the ceilings and the soffit around the circular atrium. The panels were fitted to wood battens, fixed to the concrete ceiling as ceiling panels. Prior to fixing, the fine structure panels were factory painted by Troldtekt in a light grey finish. Commenting on the finished project, BDL Managing Surveyor, Elliot Bryant, said:“We found that these panels were very easy to handle and install. We were also impressed with their acoustic
performance and attractive unifying appearance. Troldtekt acoustic tiles are specified throughout the UK and Europe and can be delivered as either FSC or PEFC certified panels. They are manufactured using 100% natural wood fibres and their benefits are high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and fire safety. They are used to improve acoustics in many projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools and commercial and public buildings. 8 www.troldtekt.co.uk * info@troldtekt.co.uk ( 01978
