Welcome
to Future Constructor & Architect...
A
rchitecture has a considerable impact on both our lives and, of course, our towns and cities. The Brits’ love for architecture inflates year-on-year with new landmarks hitting our skyline and changing metropolises’ aesthetics. This is the case for RIBA’s new centre located on Liverpool’s Waterfront, RIBA North. The freestanding building pays homage to its background of black aesthetics on Liverpool’s Mann Island and acts as a key part of the city’s cultural offering. Designed by Matt Brook, RIBA North intends to educate more people on how architecture has an influence on all our lives. For more information on RIBA’s new offering, turn to page 30. Meanwhile on pages 14 and 40, the Brits’ admiration for all things Dutch extends from our interiors out of doors with the design and build of a state-of-the-art car parking facility in the district of Zutphen and an outstanding eco-friendly academy in the Netherlands’ Groningen quarter. The Energy Academy Europe has been built on the Zernike Campus Groningen and has set itself on a path towards a CO2-netural status. To find out more about this academy, turn to page 14. Whilst on page 40, you can find out more about Zutphen’s up-to-the-minute car parking facility. Elsewhere in this issue, Kemper System looks at the benefits of wet-on-wet vs wet-on-dry roofing applications, Remeha reports on its future-proofed heating system at London’s Royal Academy of Arts and A-SAFE talks designing in safety. I hope you enjoy this edition. Don’t forget you can also access all of the magazine’s features, product news and supplier information at your fingertips via Future Constructor & Architect’s state-of-the-art app. To download your version free of charge, simply search ‘fc&a’ on Google Play or the App store.

During the planning and execution of the project, GRID Architects’ designs were greatly influenced by the Festival of Britain, a national exhibition held in 1951. In the wake of World War II, the exhibition symbolised a strong spirit of recovery and rejuvenation. The bronze Festival Star is subtly replicated throughout Belvedere Gardens, masterfully etched onto the facade. The award-winning architecture practice undertook
In addition, the panels were tested for noise and ground wind reduction in a wind tunnel – used to test high-power race cars – at Southampton University. The panels are incredibly detailed, featuring alternate perforated holes and embossed dimples, with light-sensitive paint, so that the facade appears to transform with the movement of the sun throughout the day. The bronze colouring pays homage to the nearby Palace of Westminster, and is echoed throughout the exquisite interiors, by Goddard Littlefair. Purchasers at Southbank Place will benefit from the highest quality of living, with access to the 1700ft2 residents-only amenities floor, which will include his and hers steam and sauna rooms, a gymnasium, a 25m swimming pool, treatment rooms, wetroom and gym classes. Residents will also be able to make use of an outdoor terrace and residents’ lounge, ideal for social gatherings and business meetings alike. Additionally, the development will include 48,000ft2 of shops, restaurants and bars, plus 530,000ft2 of office space and a direct entrance to London Waterloo Station.
extensive research into the emblem, which was originally created by influential British Graphic Designer, Abram Games, and how it could be incorporated into the facade. The architectural team worked tirelessly to make the emblem fit geometrically onto bespoke folded aluminium panels. To achieve the best results, each panel has been tested extensively in centres in Germany for strength, water resistance and colouring.

Architect in Profile Anthony Thistleton-Smith and Andrew Waugh set up Waugh Thistleton in their thirties. The pair have never taken anything for granted which has resulted in many of the firm’s key achievements. Here, FC&A talks to Anthony about the practice and what he and Andrew have planned for the future. A lot of bad design results from architects imposing their idea on a site. You need to study the site, the surroundings, the social and urban context and allow the solutions to develop from this research. This does not have to mean designing to match, but the response to the context has to be the driving consideration.

Had you always wanted to pursue a career in architecture? Growing up, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I stumbled across the idea while watching a news piece on the closure of Bath University’s architecture school when I was 14. As the camera panned across the studio, filled with drawing boards and models, it was a bit of a revelation. I realised then that this was what I wanted to do and it was pretty much fixed from then on. Who has been your greatest influence and source of inspiration? My first year out, after my degree, I spent in Australia with Harry Seidler. His enthusiasm was incredible, as well as his sense of purpose, even at a late stage of his career. With a wealth of achievement behind
him, his vehement passionate as undimmed and he fought angrily against mediocrity and compromise of any kind. What has been your most notable project to date? Our Murray Grove/Stadthaus building competed in 2009, which was the first tall timber building. We had little idea of the impact it would have – at the time we were pursuing the goal of building in CLT because we thought it was a good thing. It is only since then that we have come to realise what a groundbreaking, pioneering project it was. How do you approach your projects? ‘Anew’; I think the most important thing to do is to try to come to new schemes without preconceptions.

What do you think is the greatest challenge for designing in sustainability? We need to understand what we mean by sustainability and sustainable. The words themselves have a very specific meaning; can we design buildings that can be sustained – economically, socially as well as environmentally? For too many, sustainability is simply a badge that means designing the same building that you would have 25 years ago and chucking some new technologies at it to meet codes. For us, the need to minimise energy use, carbon emissions, water use and waste has to be considered at the concept stage as well as how they work within the local infrastructure and communities. What can we expect to see from Waugh Thistleton over the next year? We are going to continue to challenge the entrenched way we do things and pioneer new ways of meeting the challenges of the dire need for housing and reducing our environmental impact. Our first modular housing will be coming off the production line within a year or two and that will be a game changer.

It’s a given that fossil fuels are a finite resource and it’s only a matter of time before they run out. The problem is buildings use a lot of energy, so planning for the future has never been more important.
F
aced with this challenge, the team behind the design of an awardwinning building in the Netherlands decided to create a building which demonstrates innovative design, materials and technologies that will serve as an example at a time when fossil fuels and other polluting, highconsumption solutions are a thing of the past. Bringing together science, teaching and business interests under one roof, the Energy Academy Europe has set itself on a path towards a CO2-neutral university and one that produces more energy than it consumes. This exemplary and inspiring project is without equal among education-related buildings in the Netherlands.

daily on innovative and sustainable ideas. Based on the BREEAM guiding principles, the unique design demonstrates how a building can make optimal use of the natural elements – earth, water, air and sunlight – as primary sources of energy. Comprising two sections, the 15,000m2 building has research areas with laboratories and related offices have been built on the north side, while the south side houses workspaces, teaching rooms and a winter garden which serves as an important buffer zone, where air can be acclimatised. The design team worked along with these challenging energy performance standards: Zero emissions (after 40 years, including construction) BREEAM-NL ‘Outstanding’ EPC = 0 or less 51kWh/m2 per year (which is extremely low for an education-related building) Earthquake-safe (added later on during the design phase).

Energy academy provides a low-tech lesson for the future By taking a low-tech approach to energy, the design of the compact building makes optimum use of readily-available natural resources, such as earth, water, air and sunlight. Energy is generated using solar panels; a ‘solar chimney’ helps with natural ventilation, the winter garden creates a pleasant indoor climate and geothermal energy is used to heat and cool the air. Finally, rainwater is collected for flushing the toilets and watering the plants. If natural resources temporarily prove insufficient, back-up installations have been fitted for heating, ventilation and lighting systems.
Rooftop energy In order to achieve these highly ambitious sustainability objectives, the building has an unusual design with a sloping roof facing south for optimum solar performance. The roof is fitted with around 1600 solar panels, arranged in 133 triangles so that natural daylight can penetrate deeply into the building, reducing the need for artificial light.

t
The solar chimney is a striking solution for providing natural ventilation at the right temperature. The solar chimney on top of the building is a warm spot that stimulates the airflow. Air enters the building underground and flows slowly through a long system of ducts (i.e. the 200m-long labyrinth) under the building, where it is heated in winter or cooled in summer with geothermal energy to ensure the right air temperature. This natural ventilation saves approximately 20% in energy. On warm summer nights there is additional cooling through a natural process that requires no energy. Cool night air flows through the interior winter garden via the atrium and through the entire building, so that the next day occupants can start their day in a cool working environment. The building also makes a sustainable contribution to its immediate ecological surroundings. A ‘fauna tower’ and faunafriendly green spaces have been

The heating and cooling comes mainly from the ground. Two water reservoirs are located at a depth of 100m – one for heating and one for cooling. In summer, the cold water is pumped up and absorbs heat in the building. This now warmed water is then pumped back into the second reservoir. In winter, this process is reversed. The water is further heated by a heat pump which efficiently turns electricity into heat which is distributed throughout the building for underfloor heating (60% of the heating), to heat the airflow through climate ceilings and to heat tap water. When needed, cool water can be used from the nearby pond. Rainwater that flows down the sloping roof is filtered and stored in the reservoir. This water is used to water the plants in the winter garden and to flush the toilets. Fostering innovation in the field of energy, the Energy Academy Europe (EAE)

Sustainability in Development Nicholas Hare’s brief was for a new office building to house about 60 people next to existing buildings on the edge of Saxmundham
Green with envy The newly-completed office building for Christies Care on a rural site in Suffolk is perhaps Nicholas Hare’s greenest building yet. The design followed Passivhaus principles and achieved an EPC ‘A’ rating. It is largely built of wood; the external cladding is of specially treated, unpainted timber boards and the superstructure is of cross-laminated timber. Furthermore, it was erected in three weeks.
C
hristies Care arranges home care for all sorts of people. Nicholas Hare’s brief was for a new office building to house about 60 people next to its existing buildings on the edge of Saxmundham. The decision was taken to focus on two aspects of greenness; in the selection of materials and energy economy, targeting an EPC ‘A’ rating and following Passivhaus principles without the rigour and expense of certification.
Design approach The building is a simple two-storey box with a pitched roof. The long axis runs north-south, so that the windows along its side walls face east and west. The deeper and more open offices are on the west side, so the windows are larger there than
18
on the east. All of them will need blinds to cope with sunlight. The wet parts are at the north end, and on the south there is a generous glazed screen to the cafe, with a deep canopy to protect it from summer sun. Above it at high level in the gable is a circular window. This will allow sunshine to track across the open office on the first floor, and is actuator-operated to help purge hot air in summer.
Construction The entire superstructure of the building is of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and was erected in three weeks. The CLT is generally visible internally and the most basic industrial quality was chosen. The surface was given a dilute white spray to reduce the effect of darkening.

FIRST FLOOR PLAN
The external wall cladding is of vertical Accoya tongue and groove strips. The client opted for it to be unpainted, understanding that it will go grey and stain unevenly. Whilst the roof cladding is of pre-patinated zinc. The external areas are largely grassed and planting will be carried out by the client in the spring and autumn.
Social sustainability Christies Care is a major employer in the market town of Saxmundham. Its previous main office was in an unsatisfactory old Post Office building. The new building provides the opportunity for continuing and growing employment in the town. The entire superstructure of the building, including the external walls, is of timber – CLT combined with glulam columns and beams. This calculated to sequester 180 tonnes of carbon, which in terms of embodied energy, much more than offsets the transport from Austria. The external wall cladding is also of acetylated timber (Accoya), which uses a timber which would otherwise be unusable for construction. Floor finishes were chosen for their sustainability, being generally Desso ‘Airmaster’ carpet or lino.

■
The design generally followed Passivhaus principles, but without certification
The building has achieved an EPC ‘A’ rating and the design generally followed Passivhaus principles but without certification. This meant that a standby l.p.h.w heating system could be installed, partly for psychological reasons and partly to deal with cold mornings. The building achieved an air leakage rate of 1m3/hr/m2 at its first testing – testimony to the form of construction and a careful contractor. The main ventilation is through a centralised mechanical system, using a Passivhaus-approved heat recovery AHU. On the upper floor, displacement ventilation is delivered through floor grilles. The windows generally are opening to give improved ventilation in temperate conditions. All of the light fittings use LEDs. Hugh Gathorne-Hardy, Chairman at Christies Care, Saxmundham, commented: “We’ve been in our new offices for over three months now and the pleasure of admiring it and walking inside every morning to work is as strong as our first day just before Christmas. Our team are happier and more productive than they were in our old, cramped offices. Our receptionist has said what a pleasure it is to show people to it, because they turn a corner and see this beautiful building. “The construction and planning too were remarkably easy. Nick and Beatriz were always on the ball, their expertise in not only designing a great building but making a great team of builders, M&E, engineers and so on, made the whole process a pleasure. Started on time and finished on time, we couldn’t ask for anything more.”

A desire line is the preferred route a person will take to travel from A to B, usually the quickest, straightest route
The importance of designing in safety Here James Smith, Co-Director of A-SAFE, explains why designing in safety at the architectural stage is essential to ensure a productive operation.
I
t all starts with the layout. There are hundreds of considerations to factor in during the architectural phase of a new development, upgrade or redesign. If the vital components aren’t included at this stage, it can be complex to introduce them into plans and budget later. If dangerous pedestrian and vehicle interactions can be designed out entirely during the planning period, the longterm potential for productivity is hugely improved. If a facility is organised, with distinct segregation of people from vehicles, clearly defined routes for pedestrians and traffic, reduction of dangerous crossing points and proper protection of structures and equipment – then the facility is designed to be productive.Visual segregation can be built into a facility using painted lines and signage, but this does not prove as effective as physical segregation, nor does it stop desire lines.

James Smith is the Co-Owner and Director at A-SAFE, a manufacturer of the world’s first fixed, flexible, polymer-based safety barrier system. Used in industrial workplaces across the world, A-SAFE barriers are able to flex on impact from a workplace vehicle, absorb the impact energies and reform to their original state.
Desire lines A desire line is the preferred route a person will take to travel from A to B, usually the quickest, straightest route – although obstacles will curve the desire line and force a more meandering route. In a facility, desire lines still apply – and understanding them is crucial at the architectural planning stage to ensure the protection of pedestrians. According to health and safety statistics, approximately 50 people are killed each year and over 5000 injured in accidents involving workplace transport. Mixing vehicles and pedestrian traffic increases the risk of potential accidents, so it is imperative that risk is kept to a minimum. Imagine an employee who needs to cross a factory floor to press a button. It’s unlikely there are hills or landmarks in his way, but there will be machinery, vital structures and moving vehicles such as forklift trucks. It is here when a desire

line and the safest possible route may not be identical. Desire lines often intersect with moving traffic, head down narrow walkways or lead into inaccessible areas. It is essential that pedestrians do not have ‘free roaming’ rights in a facility. The segregation of vehicles from pedestrians is at the core of safety in the workplace, and pedestrian routes should be created that correspond as closely as possible with desire lines, dissuading any attempt to make hazardous shortcuts across a facility.
Voice of the Industry Crossing points Ideally a facility will be designed with segregation in mind, and pedestrians should be given individual routes that avoid crossover, unless the design of the building dictates otherwise. Crossing points are critical areas within a facility where a pedestrian and vehicle route cross, and they must be properly managed using barriers, access gates and other measures to control the flow of pedestrians and vehicles. If implementing barriers, they should be installed as part of a wider traffic management plan that understands the potential forces of the vehicles in operation and therefore ensure they are fit for purpose. Best practice for ensuring safe crossing points is to reduce or remove them altogether. If designed in from the start, A-SAFE advises using overhead walkways where possible and making crossings highly visible using ground markings, lights and signs.

the largest vehicle that uses them, avoid sharp or blind bends and marked with the correct health and safety signage, to mention but a few. Pedestrian routes on the other hand, require a walkway with a minimum width of 600mm and additional room for deflection of the barrier, should be free from vehicles, use clear markings and signs and have raised kerbs to define the edge of the route – just some of the control measures advised by PAS 13: 2017.
In an ideal scenario, initial floor plans should include pedestrian routes and walkways, pedestrian zones and working areas, vehicle routes, pedestrian crossing points, critical structures and equipment protection, vehicle parking areas and unloading zones to create the most safety-conscious traffic management system possible. More information on PAS 13: 2017 can be found via BSI’s website.
■
It’s crucial to have a safe system of traffic management in place with methods and procedures for arrival, reception, unloading, loading and movement of vehicles within the workplace. People and vehicles should be segregated as far as is ‘reasonably practicable’. Polymer safety barriers will protect the vital components of a facility, but they will also guide, segregate, streamline and organise a workforce, forcing vehicle traffic and pedestrians to take different routes. These barriers should be selected based on several key influences, including the weight of the vehicles in operation and through calculating their kinetic energy and maximum speed of travel. Steel barriers are an option too, but require frequent replacement and accumulate expensive maintenance costs, where modernised polymer versions do not. Implementing the correct control measures is important, as advised in PAS 13: 2017 – a new code of practice for safety barriers used in traffic management. Although some of the measures may seem customary practice (eliminating hazards and isolating them from pedestrians), they are often low on the priority list for facilities, and so is the frequency of reviewing these measures to ensure they continue to perform effectively. Vehicle traffic routes should be designed with specific control measures to provide the safest route; a one-way system will minimise the need for reversing and allow for adequate passage space, it should be free from pedestrians, be wide enough for

he architecture practice worked alongside executive architect firm, tp bennett, to design the new principal nine-storey facade facing Cartwright Gardens and a lower seven-storey building at the corner of the historically-sensitive and challenging site. The new student halls for the University of London, in partnership with student accommodation provider University Partnership Programme (UPP), replaces the former 1930s and 1950s buildings to accommodate 1200 student rooms, making it one of the largest student halls of residence in London. The partnership, established in 2013, involved UPP designing and financing the scheme, thereafter operating the scheme for 50 years and will help the University of London to continue its current trajectory; to grow and develop as one of the most significant academic institutions in the country.

The challenge was to design a contemporary nine-storey facade along one side of an historic garden square in Bloomsbury opposite a crescent of listed four-storey Georgian town houses. The design takes its cues from the larger Victorian and Edwardian buildings that have been previously added to the fabric of Bloomsbury. The design shows a meticulous approach to scale, order and relief. The main facade facing Cartwright Gardens is a highly articulated and finely-crafted brick building, made from high-quality materials and simple crisp detailing. A buff water-struck Petersen brick is the principal building material chosen for the elevation. This is offset by white reconstituted stone, glazed terracotta sills and two-storey mansard. The upper five storeys are expressed as a series of stepped brick piers and frames over various window openings that are gathered together to form a vertical order over the facade.

and delivered the halls with sustainability and the environmental performance at the heart of the project, which is on target for a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) ‘Excellent’ rating.” Richard Lavington, Founding Director at Maccreanor Lavington, commented: “The challenge was to design the facade for a large new student hall of residence in the context of the Georgian crescent that frames Cartwright Gardens and the wider Bloomsbury conservation area. Our approach embraces the repetition inherent in the brief for student halls.
“The depth of the facade allows for the modelling of light and shade appropriate to a building of this scale. The unique Danish brick combines references to the warm, pale hues of Portland stone and the texture of the surrounding Georgian brickwork which the shadows of the grand London plane trees within the garden can play. The brass and stone of the entrance reference the entrance detailing of 19th century buildings with the hues of the stone reflecting the shades of autumn leaves within the square. It’s been finely crafted and beautifully made.”
■
The ground and first floor are grouped to form a single base to the building with brickwork piers being rusticated by recessing every fifth course. This finely-crafted facade sits behind new painted metal railings that match those within the surrounding square. The new double-height entrance is lined with panels to the side walls and floor of stone mosaic inlaid with brass letters and lit by large brass-coloured pendent fittings designed by Tom Dixon. The Leigh Street corner building is expressed as a pair of simple punched brick elevations. Darker water-struck bricks are used here to match the soot aged brick of the surrounding area. The windows have reconstituted stone surrounds and the brick sits on a single-storey stone base evoking the memory of the 1950s buildings that went before. The entire (4500m2) brick facade was manufactured off site as brick-faced precast concrete panels. The prefabrication has cost-effectively allowed the design team to develop stepped brick details that make reference to the detailing of traditional load-bearing masonry. The depth of the facade also allows it to be constructed from large load-bearing units which require fewer movement joints than contemporary site-laid brick cladding. This leads to a building with a more monolithic character akin to traditional masonry while minimising the amount of on-site labour. The overall development was delivered to budget within a tight 26-month programme. Sean O’Shea, Group Chief Executive Officer of UPP (University Partnership Programme), commented: “We are delighted with the completion of the Garden Halls development which is a flagship development for UPP. The residence sets a new bar for student accommodation in the heart of our capital city, offering exceptional architectural quality alongside modern facilities and delivered by leveraging cost-effective private investment attracted by the strength of the UK HE sector as an investment proposition. We have worked in partnership with the University of London since 2013 and are extremely proud to have delivered this project. The halls play a central role in the community with local residents able to enjoy the new landscaped gardens and tennis courts, with the quality of the architecture underpinning Garden Halls’ important position within the Bloomsbury conservation area and local heritage of the area. An adjudication where the party seeking the payment relies on there being no pay less notice is known as a ‘smash and grab adjudication’
Gullands’ construction department has once again been commended in Chambers & Partners 2017. David Brown has received a Band 2 ranking as a ‘Leading Individual’ and in the Legal 500 is described as “adept at handling adjudications and assisting with JCT contracts”. Here, David looks at second adjudication valuation cases.
I
t is long-established that a party’s failure to issue a pay less notice means that the sum applied for becomes the ‘notified sum’, (see section 111 Construction Act and the case of ISG Construction vs Seevic College). An adjudication where the party seeking the payment relies on there being no pay less notice is known as a ‘smash and grab adjudication’. Any attempt in a second adjudication to have a valuation of the same application would fail. If it was an interim payment, then the paying party would have to ensure that the relevant payment and/or pay less notices were served on the contract’s next due date. In relation to final accounts following termination under the JCT Immediate Form Contract (as in the case of Harding vs Paice), the parties are entitled to adjudicate in order to determine the correct value of the payee’s claims and counter claims. In respect of other final accounts, it was unclear whether ISG vs Seevic applied to all final accounts.
28
The case of Kilker Projects vs Purton has clarified that where an adjudicator has found that a payer must pay up following his failure to issue a payment notice and pay less notice against the final account, the payer is entitled to refer the merits of that valuation for determination in another adjudication. In other words, there is a difference between final payment and interim payments. The Construction Act 1996 and the scheme regulate payment and cash flow, but do not decide the true substantive entitlement to payment under the contract on a conclusive basis. The statutory regime was pay now and argue later. Kilker was a main contractor and employed Purton, a joinery sub-contractor, to carry out works at The Dorchester Hotel. Kilker had lost an adjudication on a final payment claim by Purton because it failed to give a payment notice. Kilker paid the notified sum following enforcement proceedings in the Technology and Construction Court (TCC).
Find this issue plus much more on the fc&a app and fca-magazine.com
Subsequently, Kilker decided to adjudicate the substantive valuation of the final account, in other words to have a decision made on the proper value rather than be stuck with paying the notified sum after the smash and grab adjudication. Purton argued that the adjudicator had no jurisdiction as the previous adjudicator had already decided the same, or substantially the same, claim in respect of the final payment and the principle in ISG applied, so that Kilker was deemed to have agreed the valuation of the final account because it had not given a payment notice or pay less notice. The adjudicator in the second adjudication had ordered Mr Purton to repay Kilker around £55,000 and to pay his fees. In the TCC Mr Purton’s arguments lost and the judge said that the Construction Act and the scheme do not affect the ultimate value of the contract sum that the parties have agreed as a price for the works and/or services provided. Very clear words would be required if Parliament intended to impose a scheme that would interfere with the commercial value of the bargain freely negotiated by the parties. So, the final sum due to either party in the contract is based on the enforcement of their contractual bargain and not a value established following a failure to issue the correct notices.

Liverpool welcomes RIBA North In 1715 the eminent British Author, Daniel Defoe, said: “Liverpool(e) is one of the wonders of Britain. What it may grow to in time I know not.” It is in this spirit that The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) will open a new national architecture centre, RIBA North, on 17th June on the Liverpool Waterfront, designed by Matt Brook of Broadway Malyan – who also designed Mann Island. Here, FC&A looks at RIBA’s latest centre.

Taken as a whole, the 1100m2 two-tier design (ground floor –150m2; upper level – 950m2) sits within Mann Island’s central podium block. A giant, red corian wall (6 x 15 x 0.45m), accented with shadow gap detailing and recessed lighting, articulates the project’s volumetric spine, organising the double-height entrance atrium and adjoining mezzanine level, the voluminous stairwell that provides the main transition between the two levels and the ground floor cafe and reception area.

Alongside the permanent display, RIBA North will host a bold programme of temporary exhibitions and offer the opportunity to view the historic ‘RIBA Collections’, the nation’s richest resource of architecture drawings, photographs and prints, dating from the late 15th century to the present day.The opening exhibition, ‘Liverpool(e): Mover, Shaker, Architectural RiskTaker’, celebrates Liverpool’s long, often maverick, history of architectural ambition, its willingness to take risks and consider audacious schemes – a trait which has ultimately resulted in the dramatic and celebrated skyline we see today. A £67,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) enabled 30 drawings, models and watercolours from the RIBA Collections, many of which have never been on display before, to be restored to feature in the opening exhibition. They include extraordinary unbuilt proposals including a design for the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral by Sir Charles Archibald Nicholson from 1901/1902. He proposed a hexagonal space with pairs of unusual radiating transepts, like the petals of a flower. It would have been roofed with a dome, and the transepts would have had huge windows, flooding the space with light. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott won the contest but Nicholson was able to reuse his idea for the chapel of Clifton College in Bristol.
The impact of architecture For RIBA’s President, Jane Duncan, the building will enable “many more people to explore and understand the enormous impact that architecture and design have on all our lives”. It’s a project that has the enthusiastic backing of Liverpool City Council too. Mayor Joe Anderson has welcomed the new “tools and innovations” the centre will bring, as well as the “opportunities to work with other cities across the Northern Powerhouse”. At the heart of RIBA North is the City Gallery (160m2), a space for visitors to learn more about Liverpool’s past, present and future, as well as the processes involved in urban development and the evolution of the built environment. It consists of an outstanding museum-standard gallery and a smaller space, which will be used for lectures and debates. The City Gallery will accommodate a wide range of public activities, with visitors enjoying good views of Mann Island. The main presentation area also includes the Digital City Model, an interactive 3D model which tells a variety of stories about Liverpool and the surrounding area. It is also an extraordinary professional tool which can be used by developers, architects and planners to host public consultations, anticipate the impact of future development and encourage the best design approaches.

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation
Operatives do not have to wait until the first layer of resin has dried before installation of the final layer with wet-on-wet
A wet-on-wet liquid solution with reinforcement fleece means it is easier to obtain a consistent depth and coverage
Liquid roofing: the differences between wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry applications Stuart Hicks from cold-applied liquid waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, looks at the key differences and benefits of installing a wet-on-wet vs wet-on-dry liquid waterproofing solution.
I
n many refurbishment and new-build projects, specifying a liquid system for a roof, walkway or balcony is an obvious choice. Not so obvious are the key considerations to be made before the specification of one liquid system over another. Liquid waterproofing systems are made up of different chemistries, use alternative application techniques and have different curing times, meaning some are far better suited in certain applications than others. There are both wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry systems available and, when specified from a manufacturer with appropriate BBA certification, should offer a durable waterproofing solution for the client and end-user alike.
Wet or dry? When applying any liquid waterproofing products – whether it be by brush, roller or spray – it is often very difficult to achieve a consistent coverage rate. This means when
34
Find this issue plus much more on the fc&a app and fca-magazine.com
the system begins to cure, whilst the average membrane thickness may be as required, the overall system could still be thin in parts and the creation of weak spots can occur. It can be argued that achieving a consistent coverage rate is more difficult when using a wet-on-dry liquid waterproofing product, especially with the topcoat. If not applied correctly, this can lead to UV damage of the insufficiently protected base layer and subsequent system breakdown.A depth gauge or cut core samples may be required to prove the correct coverage has been achieved, but only represents the place in which they are taken. This process also presents a risk of weak spots where the performance of the whole roof is dependent on bonding between the two separate layers. Specifying a wet-on-wet system that utilises a reinforcement fleece means it is easier to obtain a consistent depth and coverage as the liquid system completely saturates
Roofing, Cladding & Insulation
However, with any liquid system, the British climate can often delay a waterproofing project, as the substrate must be clean and dry before application. No high-quality, certified system should fail if installed correctly according to manufacturers’ instructions, training and with full diligence by the operatives. The benefit of wet-on-wet systems is they remove some of the application issues and roof failures associated with multiple coatings and uneven layer thickness. Quality manufacturers should also offer a system warranty for clients, developed to build the confidence of the contractor, specifier and the end-user.
Quality manufacturers should offer a system guarantee for clients, developed to build the confidence of the contractor and specifier
the reinforcement layer. Operatives know enough resin has been applied when the fleece is no longer visible, meaning optimum saturation is assured. In addition, if a liquid manufacturer offers a warranty with its product, if a consistent depth of liquid has not been achieved, the warranty can be invalid, with any remedial work at the contractor’s or even client’s expense. Another key consideration is ensuring the total integration of base and surface build-up once the liquid waterproofing is applied. Wet-on-wet systems typically involve two-thirds of the required resin being poured directly onto the prepared substrate and evenly spread with a brush or roller. Reinforcement fleece is then laid directly into the wet resin with the remaining one-third of the resin immediately applied on top to completely saturate the fleece. This then cures to form a single, fleece-reinforced, chemically bonded membrane that is completely UV stable. This helps to avoid potential problems of intercoat adhesion, thin spots or delamination. On any waterproofing project, there’s always a risk of surface contamination and the substrate must be clean, dry and stable before any product application to ensure a full, seamless bond. Wet-on-dry systems
that require the base coat to cure before application of the topcoat are more prone to windborne debris or moisture forming on the surface overnight. This is less likely with wet-on-wet applications, as these systems are laid in a single process and don’t require additional coats or secondary surface preparation.
Savvy specification The Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA) advocates all liquid waterproofing systems should provide a reinforcement layer as part of the application to optimise the system performance, but there are some products on the market without this. However, contractors need to be aware that without a durable reinforcement, problems can develop. During specification, it is advisable to look for a liquid waterproofing solution with a reinforcement layer – typically a polyester fleece material when using ‘wet-onwet’, such as the solution offered by Kemper System, or a fibreglass mat if using a wet-ondry system, for example. Time and cost savings should also be taken into consideration during specification, and it can be argued that a wet-on-wet system offers quicker possession times and less disruption on site, as operatives do not have to wait until the first application of resin has dried before the final layer is installed.
Time for training In any building project, meeting quality standards is of paramount importance. As with all roofing systems that have varying application techniques, system training should be available to operatives new to using a product. With the lack of regulation on training in the roofing sector, operatives are less likely to be installing a safe, compliant system without appropriate training and should consider the long-term benefits. Many liquid manufacturers, such as Kemper System, offer free system training to approved contractors so operatives are confident in using their products.
A matter of choice There’s no doubt there are varying specification and installation benefits of the different application techniques of using a wet-on-wet system in comparison to a wet-on-dry technique.Time and labour cost savings, consistent depth and coverage of resin as well as long-term performance of the cured membrane must all be taken into consideration. It is always advisable to opt for an experienced, well-established liquid manufacturer with full system training, specialised on and off site support and system warranties to ensure a sound waterproofing solution for many years.

For London’s Royal Academy of Arts, achieving high environmental standards is essential to protect its valuable collections. James Porter, Sales Director at Remeha, reports on its new future-proofed heating solution.
I
n 2018, the Royal Academy of Arts (RA) in London celebrates a milestone anniversary – 250 years of shaping the country’s understanding, appreciation and creation of art. Honouring this impressive achievement, it is transforming its historic two acre estate, opening up, uniting and revitalising its buildings on Piccadilly and Burlington Gardens in a £50m project led by renowned Architect David Chipperfield. Running in parallel is an extensive infrastructure masterplan that has included refurbishing, relocating and centralising the heat generation plant across the RA estate within a newly-designed plant room. This is located on the rooftop above the Sackler Wing of Galleries at Burlington House. “Our key requirement was to develop a long-term, future-proofed solution to more efficient and reliable heating while ensuring the close controlled conditions demanded by Government indemnified standards,” said Kyle Peters, Senior Project Manager at the RA. The RA appointed Arup as services designer on the bespoke heating system.
36
“The new boiler plant room consolidates the heating generation across the RA estate,” explained Vasilis Maroulas, Associate at Arup, “centralising the maintenance regimes, liberating space for use as backof-house storage and RA staff offices, and enabling the implementation of the critical electrical infrastructure upgrades.” Arup specified 16 Remeha Quinta Pro 115 boilers to meet the building’s flexible heating load. The boilers can provide a total heat output of up to 1.8MW to meet peak demand with the ability to be turned automatically down as low as 17kW when required for more efficient energy use. The design called for a large DN200 diameter primary boiler loop pipe to connect to the existing distribution system. The long, narrow dimensions of the new Sackler plant room presented an interesting additional challenge for Arup and principal contractor CBRE. “Given the shape of the plant room, the only viable solution was to use modular, wall-mounted boilers,” explained Antaeus Wheatley, Arup’s Senior Mechanical Engineer.

Working with Arup and CBRE, heating manufacturer Remeha provided a bespoke, off-site-fabricated rig solution to meet the specific requirements of the project and site. “To overcome the plant room constraints, the boilers were arranged in an in-line format,” said Nick Stevenson, Remeha’s Prefabrication Expert.“Arup and CBRE specified designing the rig in four separate modules to facilitate positioning within the rooftop plant room. Each module comprised four Quinta Pro 115 units, shunt pumps, isolation valves, control valves and safety valves plus flow and return header pipework.” The rig was specially designed to accommodate the specified additional orifice plates, test points, expansion vessels and increased shunt pump sizes for each boiler on the frame. As the boilers needed to be cranelifted into the plant room through a limited opening in the roof structure, the four modules feature lifting eyes for easier manoeuvrability. The packaging was designed to be retained during the lifting process to suit CBRE’s plant room build programme and assist in keeping the galleries fully operational during construction. Each module incorporated Remeha iSense Pro controls, prewired within control panels with the requisite safety interlocks and shut-off switches as specified by Arup. The control wiring was bespoke to this project to accommodate the specific requirements for additional pump control, monitoring and water treatment functions. To meet Arup’s specific requirement, the control panels were provided with interconnection boxes to add flexibility for future repositioning if required.

Bricks, Blocks & Pavers What are the differences between bricks that make an impact on the look of a property?
Brick type There are several different manufacturing methods for producing bricks, with each one offering different characteristics. Handmade, stock, wire-cut and water-struck are all different types of clay bricks.
Size The standard format of bricks in the UK is 215 x 102.5 x 65mm – however, there are several different size variations available that can have a massive impact on the look of the property.
Colours Obviously, the colour of your chosen brick will play a huge factor in the look and feel of a project and within the UK market there is a huge number of colours available, from plains, multi-coloured and reds to yellows, white and blacks – and even glazed bricks.
Brick by brick At its most simplistic, a home is bricks and mortar, so making sure that the right products are selected for a certain project is vitally important. Here Richard Brown, Category Marketing Manager for Walls at Wienerberger, elaborates on the considerations you should regard when choosing brick for a building project.
W
ithin the UK, brick is the most popular facade option for the housing market, with durability, security, solidarity, longevity, versatility and cost-effectiveness all being key contributors to the product’s sustained prominence within the market. There are many variables but most people are surprised that typically the cost of bricks on a new detached property is around £5000. That is less than 3% of the overall build cost and much less than most people spend on the average kitchen, yet bricks have such an important impact on ‘kerb appeal’. From the way the building looks and the feel the build exudes, to how it fits in with its surroundings, the use of the right facade can have a major impact on the overall aesthetic of a project. Add to this the fact that it’s also the most difficult aspect to alter at a later stage – you can easily modify your kitchen or bathroom but it isn’t quite so simple to change the fabric of the building – the importance of selecting the right brick for a project becomes
38
crucial, especially when there are over 1000 different types available within the UK.With such a selection, choosing the right bricks for a project can be a daunting thought, but before jumping in, it’s important to consider the factors involved with selecting the right product. One key consideration is to ensure you’re fully aware of the style that you want your project to encompass. Do you want to create something with a contemporary finish, or do you have a more traditional and ‘olde worlde’ feel in mind? We see the rulebooks being thrown out with beautiful soft mud bricks being used in open-plan, contemporary settings where we used to have them in the ‘traditional’ category. One aspect that will obviously play a part in this area is local planning permissions, as this will have an impact on the features that are deemed suitable in different areas of the country. It’s also worth noting, that brickwork isn’t always considered just an external material, but can also be used inside the home to create a unique feature.

Textures Similar to the colour of your brick, the texture also has a major impact on the style of a building. Creased, handmade and ‘tumbled’ effects provide a look of reclaimed bricks, whereas monotone, smooth products are more popular for contemporary looks.
Blending Currently, there is a growing trend for projects to incorporate a mix of different products to create their own signature blend for a property. This gives customers the chance to create a project that is entirely unique in appearance and character. We’re able to offer this service, with access to the largest range of bricks available in the UK, meaning that customers can mix-and-match from a huge selection of colours and textures for complete individuality.

his was the case in the Noorderhaven district of Zutphen in the Netherlands, where MoederscheimMoonen Architects was designing a new garage parking facility for the Dutch National Railways. The design references the historic warehouses and the old industries of the city of Zutphen and is located in a former industrial zone next to the centre, the railway and the river IJssel. The building, with a total floor space of 12,780m², has 375 parking spaces and storage for over 600 bicycles. The design, which incorporates two visually exciting corkscrew ramps that are used as an entrance and exit, is lifted by galvanised columns as a reference to the former industrial character of the area. This open plinth maximises daylight on the ground floor. The facades of the upper floors are then finished with SafeWood Select, a unique product from Foreco in Dalfsen. A maintenance-free fire retardant treatment is industrially applied to provide a longterm surface spread of flame protection to the cladding timbers even in exterior applications such as this. The stylish pine cladding struts provide plenty of natural light into the structure. Around 40,000 linear metres of these timbers were supplied by Foreco of Dalfsen, which arranged the industrial application of NON-COM Exterior fire treatment from Lonza Wood Protection. NON-COM Exterior is a tried, tested and proven fire protection for timber, designed specifically for external projects and is fully in-line with NHBC standards for exterior timber cladding on new-build projects.

The interior of the garage meets the highest requirements of the ESPA, the European Standard Parking Award. The garage is also designed so that it can be easily expanded in the future with an additional layer. KlaasJan Swager of Foreco commented: “SafeWood Select is a front runner in the development of new modification techniques to give timber an assured fire protection. This treatment offers proven, maintenance-free fire retardant properties. The material can be applied to cladding projects without risks and the lack of maintenance requirements provides real financial benefits in the long term. Besides that, it offers insurance companies and fire services a warranty that the timber is in
accordance with the Construction Products Regulations. The timber we used is European pine from sustainable, managed forests and once treated it creates a high-quality and sustainable alternative for inflammable cladding materials.” Mike Smith of Lonza commented: “Our NON-COM Exterior fire retardant technology has been used for over 40 years on major cladding design projects around the world. The assured fire protection it brings gives architects, designers and the eventual end-users of the building real confidence that the choice of timber is a beautiful, warm and high-performance material choice.”
■
The treatment involves a carefullycontrolled pressure application of the leach-resistant NON-COM Exterior polymer-based fire retardant, followed by kiln-drying and heat curing to provide a highly effective surface spread of flame protection in the event of a fire. The treatment provides a one-off, permanent protection with no need for ongoing fire protection maintenance. The treatment is designed to be used on a wide range of timber species, leaving the treated timbers with a natural finish. The cladding struts on the building are mounted in different directions and intermixed with red steel strips. Between the struts there is also vertical LED lighting.

Fire Protection
Fires in high-rise buildings generate large quantities of smoke that tend to spread vertically throughout the building
Protect the perimeter and meet the standard
When fire breaks out in a high-rise, the immediate challenge for firefighters is how to overcome the fact that an average fire hose won’t spray any further than 50ft and as such, the fire can therefore only be fought from an adjoining structure, or from the inside.
Tried and tested solution The perimeter barrier firestops seal the linear gap between the edge of the compartment floor slab and external curtain wall. Due to project designs and site tolerances, this linear gap can be variable, so the firestop system used needs to have a degree of ‘dynamic’ movement capability – compression and recovery – in order to accommodate serviceability movement. What is critical is the firestop system must do this in combination with the primary functional requirement, which is to maintain continuity of fire resistance between the compartment floor and the external wall. The installed firestop system needs to match the same period of fire resistance as the compartment floor.
46
All firestop systems need to be tested to two criteria – Integrity and Insulation (EI). Integrity (E) refers to the ability of the system to prevent the passage of flame, smoke and combustible gases either through or around the material, or through joints in an assembly; while Insulation (I) refers to a measure of the increase in conducted heat transferred from the exposed to unexposed surfaces of 180°C rise above ambient. These two criteria are critical in the development of curtain wall perimeter firestop products. The most effective products combine a number of material features – density, thickness, resin content, fibre structure and controlled compression – which together determine the resistance properties. When looking at the Integrity (E) criteria, the material chosen must be impervious to the transfer of flame and gases; easy to install with minimal site management and accommodate all real-world requirements at interfaces, joints and details. In order to meet the fire and smoke-stop requirements in all external facade applications, the Certifire-approved SIDERISE CW-FS perimeter barrier and firestop systems offer an unrivalled combination of fully-qualified performance, practical installation and service benefits. The principal function of the SIDERISE CW system is to maintain continuity of fire resistance by sealing the linear gap between the compartment floors or walls and external curtain walls both horizontally and vertically. SIDERISE perimeter barriers and firestops for curtain walling use a patented method of manufacture that provides a resilient lateral compression. This facilitates installation,
All firestop systems need to be tested to two criteria – Integrity and Insulation (EI)
ensures the requisite tight fit and enhances fire Integrity (E).Throughout the range, the materials comprise a one-piece product with a pre-compressed non-combustible stonewool core. The products also have integral aluminium foil facings to provide an overall Class A1 rating and excellent resistance to the passage of smoke. SIDERISE CW-FS perimeter barrier and firestop systems also offer an unrivalled combination of independent thirdparty Certifire-approved performance data for both horizontal and vertical applications, Certifire certificate No CF563 refers. The systems can offer tested fire rating options ranging from 30 minutes to five hours and can accommodate void widths up to 1200mm. In addition to providing an effective seal against the passage of smoke and fire, the products will also function as an effective acoustic barrier and plenum lining. Whilst specifying the correct product is vital, the quality of installation is equally as important. Contractors installing life-saving measures such as perimeter barriers and firestops must have adequate training on the particular manufacturer’s products and be qualified to install it in the first place. When it comes to saving lives and protecting businesses and property, a well-designed and installed system can make the difference.
■
I
t is easy to see why firestops are critical to prevent the passage of flames, smoke and noxious gases from one floor to the next. Chris Hall, Commercial Development Officer of SIDERISE, feels that passive fire protection solutions play a vital role in highrise buildings mitigating the effects of fire, saving lives and property. Fires in high-rise buildings generate large quantities of smoke that tend to spread vertically throughout the building, even if the fire is contained to only one room. When the linear gap at the perimeter edge between the floor and curtain wall is not properly sealed, flames and smoke will spread vertically to higher floors. Addressing these linear gaps by properly installing firestops maintains the floor’s fire compartmentation of the building. This delays vertical smoke spread and reduces the risk of smoke-related deaths in the upper floors of the building.

Drainage
Utilising Marshalls’ expertise in both concrete and natural stone, Pave Drain offers an effective combined paving and drainage solution which perfectly complements natural stone paving products
Drexus Pave Drain: set to change the face of landscape design Drainage has long been considered a purely functional element of any design. So much so that it’s often something landscape architects try to hide to ensure it doesn’t detract from the overall look and feel of the space.
E
ssentially drainage is viewed as a necessary evil, with functional grated systems being the traditional go-to solution. But that’s all now set to change. In a huge leap forward for the industry, landscape architects no longer need worry about how to incorporate drainage or conceal it from view. In fact, there’s now a reason to actively embrace it. Marshalls, a UK-leading hard landscaping provider, now supplies drainage that blends with concrete paving and natural stone products. With Drexus Pave Drain, Marshalls can provide a discreet natural stone-topped drainage solution in the exact same material as the paving that surrounds it.This means the drainage can either blend into the landscape to effectively hide it, or be contrasted to offer some form of delineation to frame a public space and create a design feature.
functions as a design feature in its own right. At a time when living space is at a premium and keeps having to work harder, Drexus Pave Drain can provide subtle yet effective demarcation, creating the sort of zoning that allows great public areas to do all that’s increasingly being asked of them.
Blending Where a landscape architect still wants to hide the drainage, thanks to Pave Drain it can now be created in the same material and colour as the surrounding paving – allowing it to be subtly integrated into the paving design. Marshalls’ Drexus Pave Drain provides the perfect solution, offering a unique aesthetic for linear drainage. Utilising Marshalls’
expertise in both concrete and natural stone, Pave Drain offers an effective combined paving and drainage solution which perfectly complements natural stone paving products. The unique ability of Marshalls’ Drexus Pave Drain to sympathetically blend drainage into a scheme, or use it to provide subtle but effective demarcation, means it has the potential to play a game-changing role in the world of landscape architecture – and find a place at the heart of every kind of project imaginable. 8 www.marshalls.co.uk

Delineation In busy, multi-use spaces which require demarcation, Pave Drain can be used as an effective delineator to distinguish between pedestrian, vehicular and cycle areas instead of a prominent kerb or edging. A line of drainage can also be supplied in a contrasting colour to be used as a border around a public space. As the product can now be rendered in the same texture and material, it no longer looks unsightly but instead

Off-Site Manufacturing A collaborative approach
Investment in home-manufactured solutions has a huge advantage which should not be overlooked
Brexit brings uncertainty... off-site brings solutions The uncertainty Brexit brings is pushing forward resurgence in off-site construction. Traditional construction companies have stated they are looking into new developments using off-site construction. They are aware there is a need to future-proof their businesses so are looking to off-site.
O
ff-site commands a fraction of the labour of traditional construction along with sustainability benefits too. Investment in homemanufactured solutions has a huge advantage which should not be overlooked. UK lags other nations in the adoption of factory-based construction, which accounted for 7% of UK house-building by value in 2015 versus up to 15% in Germany and Japan, according to data from engineering consultancy Arcadis. Today’s technology is light years ahead of the low-grade 1940s prefabs, however, and prefabrication can produce homes of the same quality as traditional building techniques, drawing the interest of big construction players ahead of Brexit. A study carried out by the Steel Construction Institute consultancy estimated that prefabrication could reduce traditional on-site labour by 75%, with many of these workers coming from outside of the UK in the EU. Such savings could prove important after Brexit, which Arcadis estimates could lead to Britain missing out on 215,000 traditional construction workers coming
52
to the country by 2020, on top of any departures of existing workers.
Off-site is the solution
Joint Managing Director, Steve Hardy, from fenestration specialist Sidey, commented:“The solution to some of the problems Brexit presents has to lie in the growth of off-site construction. Costs are now no more than when building through standard construction methods, but the two huge pluses are the delivery of better buildings by design, and delivery on time. “There is a growing lobby of Government agencies, procurement organisations and individual housing associations all reviewing whether they should directly invest into, or partner with, off-site manufacturing factories; they are recognising that the housing crisis which the country faces is being exacerbated by a basic failure in the construction sector – an inability to deliver on time. “Off-site is well and truly proven as a construction option and it is the way forward for the housing sector wanting to build better quality homes; cost-effectively and, most importantly, sure to be delivered on time.

“One of the great benefits to customers, is the opportunity for us to get involved at the design team stage, to work collaboratively with the architects, the constructors and the clients themselves; to understand exactly what they want, and to offer them bespoke solutions to ensure that our element of the build – being enhanced specification windows and doors – are manufactured in-house with airtightness and off-site installation solutions to complement the whole of the rest of the construction. “There is capacity in the off-site market to fill the growing demand in a controlled and health and safety conscious way, and at the same time to offer the best products on the market to give them a long-term return on their investment and further reduce waiting lists of thousands waiting on affordable housing.” For more information regarding Sidey’s innovative fenestration solutions, please visit the company’s website. Off-Site Manufacturing
Offsite Solutions launches demountable bathroom pods Offsite Solutions, a leading bathroom pod manufacturer, has developed an innovative demountable pod solution for refurbishment and new-build projects where there is insufficient access for fully assembled pods. Originally developed for military refurbishment projects, the demountable pod option is now available in the complete range of GRP bathroom designs from Offsite Solutions. This level of design flexibility is unprecedented and a UK industry first. Demountable pods radically reduce work on site and offer the superior and consistent quality of factory-built bathrooms. Eight pods can be reassembled on site in just one day with a three-person team. This compares to site-built bathrooms on a typical scheme, which can take six to 12 weeks to complete using multiple trades and requiring a high level of site management and supervision. In refurbishment and conversion projects, the only access may be through the window openings of an existing
building – or internally via the main entrance and stairwells – and this may not be sufficient for a full-sized pod. The panel sizes of a demountable pod are specially designed to ensure full access is achievable. The demountable solution uses a unique sectional design where the shower tray forms part of the floor and the wall panels create the shower enclosure. Holes for sanitaryware are pre-drilled and only the shower door is then installed on site. The pod walls are completely vertical with 90° corners – unlike pods created from complete GRP moulds which have tapered walls – so integration is very simple. Offsite Solutions offers a comprehensive and expanding range of bathroom pods to suit different building types and applications.

Cavity wall openings Cavitray protected Incorporating a level of protection that works regardless of the site exposure categorisation makes sense. Conventional roll DPC is commonly used to provide protection against wet ingress over window and door openings in cavity walls. The downside is roll DPC cut on-site can end up being inconsistent in shape, inconsistent in length and there can be difficulty addressing all the NHBC/LABC recommendations.A solution is to use a preformed Cavitray. When horizontal preformed Type C Cavitrays are used with lintels, one eliminates the variances that occur with a site-fabricated approach. Preformed Type C Cavitrays are ready-shaped to harmonise with the window head construction/lintel choice, so the build detail is always consistent and always correct. Type C Cavitrays are also self-supporting, which means they hold to profile and do not require building into the inner skin. Importantly, Type C Cavitrays have extended ends that project each side of the wall opening by 300mm. These extended ends ensure adequate shelter of whatever
reveal closing method is deployed, and the 300mm projection guarantees a brick perp joint beyond the opening is always located to accommodate the stopends in the optimum position. So when lintels have only 150mm bearings (such as those within the 900 to 1600mm length range), the 300mm extension ensures the stopend can still be naturally accommodated without breaking bond. Finally, preformed Type C Cavitrays can be supplied with a drip lip, moulded to the tray front in a position to coincide with the top of the window or door frame. Thus the recommendation within NHBC 6.1D6b to provide a lip at this point is fulfilled automatically. 8 www.cavitytrays.com

BAL provides full tiling solution
FeRFA guide makes for excellent floor show
FeRFA, the Resin Flooring Association, represents a wide range of leading manufacturers – including Sika – as well as contractors and other associated companies involved in resin flooring systems. FeRFA’s classification system, which runs from one to eight and categorises floors according to durability and product type, enables contractors and specifiers to compare products on a like-for-like basis, helping to simplify the specification process. Ultimately, the FeRFA guide demystifies the specification process by cutting-through product marketing. Customers are provided with an estimated figure – giving them the reassurance of an educated ‘guarantee’ in terms of number of years the system should last for.And this figure then allows Sika’s own flooring guarantees. 8 www.sika.co.uk * contractors@uk.sika.com ( 01707 394444

weberfloor creates staff gym for Norwich recruitment agency
When I4 Recruitment’s new premises required a major refurbishment, Smart Renders of Norwich brought its expertise and Saint-Gobain Weber products to the project. Ray Smart, Managing Director of Renders of Norwich, comments: “The existing substrate sloped down to a central gulley and this required a sand blinding to achieve a reasonable level which was then covered by a 100 micron weberfloor DPM. 60mm expanded polystyrene insulation was laid and taped together with weber DB matting. weberfloor 4945 glass fibre mesh reinforcement was placed over the membrane and weberfloor 4310 fibre floor self-levelling screed pumped into place. The finish is excellent and will carry any type of surface covering easily.” * enquiries@netweber.co.uk

Mapei industrial flooring system installed at Morrisons Gadbrook Mapei’s Mapefloor i302 resin flooring has been installed in an area covering over 1200m2 at the Morrisons supermarket food processing plant in Northwich, Cheshire, to renovate the existing flooring and provide a safe and durable solution. The area covered in this project was in preparation for the installation of a new food processing production line. Dates had already been set to install new machinery at the factory, so the project had to be completed within a short time frame so as not to delay further works, whilst simultaneously not compromising on quality of finish. The floorcovering was installed within one week, with the machinery being installed on time and the project completed to specification. Mapei’s technical specialists were heavily involved throughout the project, visiting the site with the contractor, Respol, prior to specification and installation to agree on the process.
Consideration had to be given to the processing plant remaining operational during the preparation and installation of the flooring, therefore all operations had to be strictly controlled, particularly concerning the creation of dust and odours. As the flooring was installed in a food processing plant, the products used for the new floor had to be ‘taint-free’, hence the specification of the Mapefloor i302 system, which is safe and compliant for use in areas of food preparation and storage. The versatility of the Mapefloor i302 SL product allowed it to be used as two systems; first as a high-build coating for foot traffic areas and secondly, as a self-levelling system for areas where forklift trucks would be operating.

FILANO RUST wins TTA ‘Best Ancillary Product’ Award FILANO RUST has been awarded ‘Best Ancillary Product’ in The Tile Association Awards 2017. The prestigious industry awards were presented at the annual ceremony held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in central London’s Portman Square; FILA beat off competition from two other finalists, Instarmac and Norcros Adhesives, to win the category, and was also shortlisted for the ‘Best Environmental Initiative’ Award. The winning product, FILANO RUST is designed to safely remove old and new rust stains from all types of natural stone, agglomerates, porcelain and ceramic as well as concrete. It has a non-acid formula, which makes it particularly suitable for delicate surfaces, including polished marble and acidsensitive limestone.A highly viscous ‘gel-like’ formulation optimises performance and avoids wastage. It can be applied onto horizontal as well as vertical surfaces – indoors and outside – where it ‘stays put’ and acts directly on the stain, turning from a clear colour to deep purple, which indicates a reaction with the rust.
FILANO RUST demonstrates FILA’s innovative product development and the breadth of its range, which spans from pregrouting protectors, detergents and sealants, to maintenance solutions. The range is recommended by over 220 surface brands. Established in 1943, FILA is a global, ecofocused company. It specialises in surface care solutions for marble, natural stone, porcelain, terracotta and wood. Combining the traditional values of a family-run firm with innovative product development, FILA products are recommended by over 220 manufacturers throughout the world.

Rubik’s Cube roof solved by Contour Roofing and Sika Sarnafil Following last year’s NFRC Roofing Awards win, Sika Sarnafil registered contractor, Contour Roofing, has once again been recognised for its outstanding work, making the shortlist in the ‘Single Ply’ category. With the success of its previous award-winning project Ewart Grove, a London residential new-build, Contour was called on again by client Paul Simon Homes to offer a premium waterproofing solution for Cheltenham House.Another new-build project in London, comprising 11 luxury apartments, the entire roof and vertical works are shaped like a Rubik’s Cube – a puzzle that was no match for Contour Roofing’s problem-solving skills. Originally specified with metal cladding, the client wished to replicate this look for less cost, while achieving the same beautiful finish. Jonathan Woods, Managing Director at Contour, once more proved that Sarnafil’s single-ply membranes can accommodate the most complex builds, while offering the client one of the most robust extensive product guarantees on the market.
Contour worked closely with Sika Sarnafil to generate a bespoke specification with Sika Sarnafil’s recently-launched Self Adhered membrane in lead grey and decor profiles to emulate metal seams. Custom-made Sarnametal details were cut and fabricated to accommodate the various angle changes on the roof, including vent grills to the base of the cube. Sarnafil’s new spray-applied adhesive Primer 610 was quickly and carefully applied to all the vertical areas, to accommodate the application of the Self Adhered membrane.

Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free and odourless waterproofing membrane has been used to refurbish an 85m-high food silo on London’s River Thames.Working in conjunction with Capitol Roofing Co, the client, ADM UK, needed a swift refurbishment of one of its silos containing linseed. Capitol Roofing Co chose Kemperol 2K-PUR to refurbish the roof and expansion joints around the perimeter of the silo because of its ease of application and difficult-to-access project location. The contractors were able to install Kemper’s liquid system on top of the existing felt roof. After cleaning and priming the substrate, the Kemperol 2K-PUR resin was then applied in a single, wet-on-wet process. * enquiries@kempersystem.co.uk ( 01925 445532

Abet shelters the rescuers Abet Laminati’s MEG exterior grade laminate has been used to clad the exterior of the new offices and crew rooms of the RNLI Station in Brighton Marina. Designed and supplied by Aliva UK, MEG 414 was chosen to match the ceramic facades of the surrounding buildings and was face-fixed with colour-coded rivets. The cladding envelopes the station, keeping
staff and crew warm and dry in the harshest of weathers. This scheme is a perfect example of high-performance MEG in action where the need for incredibly high performance and
durability is married up with low life-cycle costs and aesthetic design. Carrying a BBA Agrément Certificate, MEG is a self-supporting high pressure laminate (HPL) for cladding the exterior of buildings, balconies and other applications. It features high resistance to temperature, climate shock, weathering, UV light and impact. Furthermore, its chemical-resistant nature and closed structure do not allow paint in spray cans, various inks, emulsion paints, lipstick or pastel paints to penetrate into the decorative layer, negating the need for any anti-graffiti treatment and making the surface easy to clean. The range is available in over 91 colours in a mix of traditional plain colours, wood finishes, simulated concrete colours and metal. MEG is also able to incorporate Abet’s digital printing technology. This means that almost any design, photograph or pattern can be reproduced in stunning detail to give architects and designers unparalleled freedom to create unusual and dramatic building facades. 8 uk.abetlaminati.com * sales@abet.ltd.uk ( 0207

Air curtains are so effective in separating internal and external environments that doorways can remain open all day with very little effect on the heating system’s energy consumption
Close the door on energy loss With over 120 chain stores operating 20k branches across the UK switching the heating on and throwing their doors open to customers, it’s no wonder their energy bills are making a huge hole in their profits. As internal temperatures drop by as much as 10°C within moments of the doors opening, it’s time for businesses to close the door on energy loss.
F
or the all-encompassing solution, without the inconvenience or discomfort caused by constantly opening and closing doors – air curtains fit the bill perfectly.Airbloc energyefficient air curtains cut energy loss by over 80% and deliver a uniform flow of air to separate the interior and exterior atmospheres, maintain the internal climate, offer significant cost savings and deliver vastly improved worker comfort.
A system which fits the bill Providing a comfortable and safe working environment is a must for every business owner. However, the opening and closing of external doorways is unpreventable in shops and every time this happens warm air escapes and cold air enters. This makes a huge difference to fuel costs. As well as the inevitable increase in energy bills, opening and closing external doors will also affect the internal temperatures and reduce the comfort levels for employees – especially those working close to the doorway. And with many shops storing perishable items, temperature-sensitive stocks can also be compromised. Comparative temperature readings show a drop of between 4 and 10°C every time a shop door is opened. However, with an air curtain the difference is normally just 1°C. With an over door air curtain, energy lost
60
through open doors which was previously seen as unavoidable, can actually be reduced by as much as 80%. Air curtains are so effective in separating internal and external environments that doorways can remain open all day with very little effect on the heating system’s energy consumption with relatively little detriment to internal comfort conditions.
Putting a stop to energy loss Energy-efficient air curtains such as those supplied by Airbloc, can be positioned directly over or down the side of a doorway. When doors are opened in heated buildings, colder external air flows in through the bottom part of the opening, while internal air flows out through the upper part. In air conditioned buildings, the opposite applies. Over door air curtains deliver a uniform flow of air across the full door width that separates the interior and exterior atmospheres. As well as their energy-saving capacity, air curtains also have ‘hidden’ benefits. Over door air curtains induce warm air down from a high level that would otherwise be lost through the roof, thus helping to destratify the building and eliminate cold spots.Among the air curtains’ new developments is a fresh design that promotes a laminar airflow and includes deep profile aerofoil section air straightening vanes. These improve the efficiency of climate

separation between the indoor and outdoor environment, compared to previous models. Furthermore, when combined with an energy-saving control unit, such as the SmartElec3 from Airbloc, both power consumption and energy costs can be reduced by up to 50%.The attractive unit offers a number of control options to suit all applications including thermostats linked to door closed sensors that turn units down or off to increase energy savings. Outside temperature sensors can also turn off in warmer times, whilst timers will ensure the units only operate when required. The latest addition to the SmartElec3 is the proportional control algorithm which drives the leaving air temperature of the door curtain up when the outside temperature drops and reduces the leaving air temperature as the outside temperature increases – thus giving a fully automatic control which delivers huge energy savings. Businesses looking to cut their energy bills don’t have to turn down the heating or turn off the air conditioning system. With a simple and effective installation of air curtains on the shop doors, businesses can keep employees happy, save money on bills and finally shut the door on unnecessary energy loss. 8 www.nortekhvac.com/europe ( 01384

HVAC/HVP To the benefit of trade relationships, the advantages of Schlüter-KERDIBOARD extend beyond design versatility and through into the process of construction. For contractors, a move to Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD represents a quicker and easier installation process, with time savings being made due to its light weight and ease of cutting. Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD makes for a considerably greener alternative to other options, such as plasterboard and cement-faced products; its construction consists of an extruded hard foam core panel, with a special reinforcement material on both sides and waterproof fleece faces to finish, providing effective anchoring in the tile adhesive. The foam core of Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD is thermally insulating, helping to conserve energy use and improve comfort. The absence of a cementitious layer means that it costs less to transport and produces no dust when cut, making for healthier working conditions and avoiding release of toxins into the wider environment. Flexirol Multidirectional adds flexibility to open-plan offices
P C Henderson’s Flexirol Multidirectional door hardware proves to be the ideal solution for adding flexibility to today’s openplan workspaces. Open offices have been on the rise over the past 10 years, however, research suggests that productivity and employee wellbeing actually diminishes in many of these surroundings. Glass partitions maintain the natural light transmittance present in an existing workspace. They only occupy a small amount of space when not in use, maintaining the open-plan feel desired. Most importantly perhaps, these partitions aid with noise reduction and provide privacy elements that can boost productivity. 0191 377 3116 hello@pchenderson.co.uk 8 www.pchenderson.com (

Studor shows the way to health and hygiene in the bathroom Whilst unpleasant, a bad smell in the bathroom is not in itself dangerous. However, it may well be indicative of a more serious and potentially life-threatening issue. The smell can indicate that the water trap seal – the only barrier between the drainage system and the living space – has been lost, potentially posing serious health risks. Water trap seals started being fitted on bathroom and kitchen fixtures after the 1854 cholera outbreak in London.Today, cholera is not a risk in the UK, but within all our drainage systems sewer gases and pathogens such as SARS, legionnaires’, norovirus and others are always present. For the last 40 years, drainage ventilation expert Studor has been solely focused on developing products that maintain the water trap seals in buildings. Studor’s Trap-Vent solution, the combination of a water trap and air admittance valve (AAV), can easily be retrofitted to an existing bathroom, and is also ideal for small group
venting in, for example, hotels, care homes and hospitals. It protects the water trap seal between the drainage system and the room, stopping bad odours and pathogens escaping from empty traps. Studor’s UK Managing Director, Stephen Taylor, comments:“The Trap-Vent comes with a lifetime guarantee and also reduces siphonage noise, providing a 20 dB noise reduction compared to conventional traps. Furthermore, it allows freedom of design for engineers and architects to enable multiple drainage fixtures to link together.” The Studor Trap-Vent is a combined trap with a 50mm water seal and an integral AAV.

TTA Awards night – another great success for the industry The TTA Awards 2017 has once again provided a great showcase for the tiling industry. This year the awards, hosted by Emma Jesson, took place at the Radisson Blu Portman Hotel in central London. The winners of 22 categories were declared during the course of the evening – six of these being determined by public vote, the rest being adjudicated by the TTA’s panel of expert judges.
“I think this 11th TTA Awards has been our most successful ever,” says TTA Chairman, Ian Kershaw. “It’s always great to recognise the real achievers in our industry, whether
they are tile fixers, manufacturers, retailers, distributors or contractors. It shows the real strength of our industry and that we are able to demonstrate such a wealth of talent, enterprise, hard work and creativity from within our member companies. “I would like to thank all those who entered the awards this year, all those who came along to the event itself, our judges who gave freely of their expertise to make the awards possible, those who voted in the public voting categories and this year’s ‘Gold’ sponsors who made it all possible financially.” The Gold sponsors for the event were ARDEX, BAL, Bellota, Impey Showers, Norcros Adhesives and Tilemaster Adhesives. As well as the serious business of presenting awards, the event was once again a great networking occasion and an opportunity for the industry to get together and enjoy some top-class entertainment. The evening also raised £2500 for Children Today, the TTA’s nominated charity, for whom the industry has been raising money for the past 11 years. 8 www.tiles.org.uk

Powder coatings meet strict fire safety regulations Powder coatings meet a number of environmentally-sound criteria, and in one area in particular they perform very well – fire safety. Powder coatings are a dry powder and therefore require no solvents, unlike wet spray-paint. Solvents contain harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and, as a consequence, wet spray-painting causes a greater threat to the environment and to health in the event of fire. The fumes of burning from most powder coatings have very low toxicity and a low rate and density of smoke generation and this makes them safe for use in London Underground stations and within the rest of the rail network. Powdertech Corby has worked on many projects where fire safety was an issue, and where the firm’s high-quality powder coatings could comfortably meet clients’ strict specifications, in residential and business environments, as well as for rail. Anti-graffiti polyurethane powders conform to the fire integrity required within the rail
industry and the obvious advantages of these powders have been welcomed at refurbished ticket halls such as Swiss Cottage and on carriage interiors for South West trains, London Underground, Gatwick Express and East Coast Line.Thermoplastic (acid modified polyolefin) powder coatings have high electrical and thermal resistance, suitable for cable conduits around underground rail tracks. They have also been used for train skirts and underbelly protection, line-side signalling on platforms and station fencing. Inside train carriages, thermoplastic finishes have been used to coat small items such as brackets for coffee flasks,
Rise in PRS projects an opportunity for construction companies Private rental sector (PRS) projects are on the rise across the UK. PRS, otherwise known as the Built to Rent sector, is one of the fastest-growing housing markets, having doubled since 2001, and now accounts for approximately 16.5% of all UK households. Whilst the PRS was once regarded as the tenure of last resort, it is now increasingly popular. An increase in projects is seeing increased demand for companies supplying building materials and construction services. SCC Design Build offers a complete design, manufacture and installation service and builds the whole precast concrete solution offsite, enabling the company to deliver projects to reduced timescales. * enquiries@sccdbltd.co.uk

Harper Chalice launches TriSecure perimeter detection system Harper Chalice has successfully launched its new TriSecure Perimeter Detection systems using its market knowledge and customer feedback to design a unique solution.TriSecure is a combination system that utilises both the CPNI-approved microphonic detection system, FenceSecure and CPNI-approved electric pulse fence system PulseSecure to create a single hybrid combining the best of both. The issues relating to the electric fence system, such as accidental shocks to staff or contractors and vegetation causing false alarms, are removed as the electric fence is above the height of the host fence meaning all these issues are negated but the physical and psychological deterrent remains. * sales@zaun.co.uk

Peter Cox sniffs out built environment with new venture Peter Cox has announced the launch of a new partnership with Enviro-Dogs – an innovative business providing specialist canines which help detect significant structural issues for property owners. The dogs, including border collies and springer spaniels, have been specially trained to detect the early signs of dry rot, which may not be visible to the human eye, or could be located in an inaccessible area. Dry rot is a fungus that attacks wood in relatively dry conditions, and if left untreated, can seriously threaten the structural integrity of a building. Whilst a visual survey can spot the signs of dry rot, the problem may have reached a critical stage before it becomes obvious. By relying on their powerful sense of smell, the dogs are able to sniff out the fungus in its early stages, meaning it can be treated and eradicated before it becomes a serious problem. The dogs have undertaken an intensive 12-month training programme before they
are used on customer sites. They are used to detect and assess specific issues as well as conducting annual ‘health checks’ for some Peter Cox customers. This new partnership with the Wolverhampton-based Enviro-Dogs strengthens Peter Cox’s ability to provide a broad range of surveying and property preservation services for residential and commercial properties. Richard Walker, National Technical and Development Manager at Peter Cox, said: “Dry rot can be incredibly destructive, particularly for historical buildings and early detection means that they can be treated before they suffer irreparable damage, helping to preserve them for the future enjoyment of others.”

Building Elements Intratone returns to CIH for fifth year running High-quality building design is key to meeting noise challenges in London
ROCKWOOL UK has published a report on the impact of noise in London. Entitled ‘Good Growth, Quiet Buildings: Exploring the impact of noise in a growing city and solutions in the built environment’, the report draws together information on health impacts, costs and Government policy and highlights how growth in high-density living coupled with the move towards a 24-hour economy means that London will continue to face challenges in achieving good growth. Managing Director, Rory Moss, said: “Building in noise considerations from the outset is the most straightforward, costeffective route to achieving quiet buildings. By considering noise as an integral part of the design process, materials can be carefully selected to meet real-life performance needs.” 8 www.rockwool.co.uk * (

History colours design Dramatic wall design at the refurbished Tottenham Court Road Underground Station is reminding the public just how stunning centuries-old terrazzo materials can be when specified for walls and floors. Here, TRI Contracting has used terrazzo to restore the iconic Eduardo Paolozzi mosaic work and it is a stunning example of how the material can brighten everyday life. One of the greatest changes in architectural design in recent years has been the resurgence and use of colour to avoid the drabness of post-war buildings and to exploit the potential of what both traditional and modern materials can offer. For the architect and designer, colour has now become a key component of design rather than a finishing touch. Colour has become another tool with which to enhance the character and ambience of a building. For example, changes in metal manufacture have enabled intense panels of colour to brighten facades. Similarly, a recognition of the qualities and durability of traditional terrazzo craftsmanship has provided
designers with yet another choice of material and a palette of colours. Terrazzo flooring is extremely hardwearing and will outlast almost all other types of floor coupled with the lowest possible cycle costs. It offers pattern and shapes with varying levels of finish from honed to polished or designed with decorative graphics by waterjet cutting. Leading suppliers of terrazzo, as well as marble and other coloured stones are all members of the National Federation of Terrazzo Marble and Mosaic Specialists. The aims of the federation to maintain standards of craftsmanship and technical control together with detailed information about the history and specification of the products, are detailed on the website.

The modern aesthetics of the core design are further enhanced by attention to detail
New life to intimate care
The new and improved Vita range of wash and dry toilets give people a stylish solution to retaining independence and dignity in the bathroom.
C
los-o-Mat, a UK leader in helpful toileting at home and away, has applied its 56 years’ experience of working with people to optimise their hygiene and independence in the bathroom to the new-look Vita range. The Vita range is, the company believes, the most ‘fitfor-purpose’ collection of wash and dry toilets available in the UK. It encompasses the top-selling unit of its kind; the Palma Vita, the wall-hung Lima Vita and the height-adjustable Lima Lifter, all of which look like – and can be used as – conventional WCs but have built-in washing and drying, so eliminate the need to wipe clean. Now they feature an updated, more modern, aesthetically-pleasing sweeping design, to complement even the most contemporary bathroom. The new look is in part achieved using a combination of traditional ceramic and state-of-the-art plastics that deliver optimum resilience and durability. The modern aesthetics at the core design are further enhanced by attention to detail. The main skirt is telescopic to finitely adjust to floor height, whether the toilet is mounted on the floor or raised to the user’s specific height requirement via a range of purpose-designed plinths – and moulded flush levers deliver a more ergonomic appearance. The new Vita toilets can be fitted with accessories to enable the user to toilet, feeling safe, secure and in control – integrated arm supports, body supports, different seats, operating mechanisms and douche options are available across the range.
72
The upgrades are not just ‘skin-deep’. They are the fruition of major investment in people and technology by Clos-o-Mat. The Vita toilets are also the only units of their kind that are made in Britain, in the first ceramic factory to be opened in The Potteries for over 25 years, and individually-assembled to order in a dedicated factory in Manchester. Clos-o-Mat itself is the only wash and dry toilet provider in the country that is British-based. It is also the only company in the sector that has its own team of service engineers. The network now covers the whole country, giving a local, personal touch from initial commissioning to annual servicing, or retrofitting of accessories to ensure the toilet adapts with changing user requirements. As a result, the Clos-o-Mat Vita range addresses more people’s needs than any other wash and dry toilet on the market. And it does that both at the outset, and as

needs change over time. “When we first introduced the Palma Vita, it was the first wash and dry toilet specifically developed for people who needed help with their intimate hygiene,” explains Mark Sadler, Clos-o-Mat Sales Director. “The latest offering with the new Vita range continues that pioneering, brand-leading approach. “Everything we do is designed to give people the tools and technology to be as independent as possible, giving due consideration to the very specific stresses and issues that people who may be limited in their mobility face when undertaking something so intensely private and sensitive as going to the loo.” 8 www.clos-o-mat.com

VAC-VAC is BACK Lonza Wood Protection is launching a new promotional push to highlight the importance of correct preservative treatment of construction and joinery timbers as the building of new homes becomes a priority. Andy Hodge, Marketing Director for Lonza, explained: “Over the last few years a lot of work has been done by the timber treatment industry to make sure the protection levels of preservative-treated fencing and landscaping timbers are where they should be to perform in the most extreme of environments – outdoors and often in direct ground contact. “But equally important in making sure that timber remains a valued and important construction material choice is reminding important decision-makers in the housing industry that internal construction timber also needs protecting to last an expected 30 or 60 years when used in a new building. “Over the last few years our proven low-pressure, double vacuum treatments, which are tailored to suit close tolerance
Living with an air of calm Apartments are often difficult environments to be acoustically comfortable, given the effect of hard surfaces and surrounding neighbours. When located in a city, the problem is often magnified. One city dweller discovered just this problem. The property was light and spacious and offered many interesting details, such as skylights and floor-to-ceiling bay windows. However, it was soon obvious that the apartment was far from
ideal, particularly as the owner’s hearing problem was greatly exacerbated by poor acoustics. This made him unable to use the living room unless he was wearing earplugs.
building and joinery timbers, seem to have been neglected, which is really concerning bearing in mind that changes in our climate bring new threats from decay organisms which can attack and degrade these structural components. Timber frame and truss material, general construction timbers and joinery remain the key prime treatment elements. “We have introduced the ‘VAC-VAC is BACK’ campaign to help raise the importance and relevance of costeffective, low-pressure treatments to the construction industry available from timber and joinery companies throughout the UK.” 8 www.lonzawoodprotection.com/eu * timberprotectionadvice.ukca@lonza.com ( 01977

The solution was to install four floating clouds on the ceiling with Troldtekt Plus acoustic panels, which absorb the high frequencies before they bounce around the room. The way in which they have been arranged is both functionally and aesthetically sensitive. An interesting aspect is new artwork on the walls, using the same fine-textured acoustic panels with customer-selected motifs. These not only add a decorative element to the room, but also subtly increase sound absorption. Troldtekt natural wood-wool ceiling panels are widely specified throughout Europe. They create an attractive and tactile textured surface which has superior acoustic performance and can incorporate different forms of lighting and speakers. They also offer a host of benefits such as durability and natural breathability coupled with sustainability as documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at ‘Silver’ level. They are used to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, leisure centres, pools, commercial and public buildings.
