Welcome

...to our Floors, Walls & Ceilings focus

E

ffectively, floors, walls and ceilings make up the envelope of a building, acting as the physical separators between the interior and exterior of a building. It is therefore of utmost importance that components specified in these three divisions are of the highest quality for the benefit of the future occupants of a building. This is particularly imperative for buildings that have to consider speech intelligibility issues that may arise from hard surfaces – an area ceiling and wall supplier, Rockfon, is well-versed in.The acoustic specialist has utilised its know-how to provide a world-class sporting and events venue with a wave-effect ceiling design within a function room, providing a comfortable environment where visitors can hear one another. Elsewhere in this dedicated floors, walls and ceilings supplement, Knauf AMF cements its position as a leading high-quality ceiling manufacturer with a range of solutions to assist all types of interior design schemes, Interface unveils its biophilic-inspired Global Change collection and Forbo addresses the sought-after requirement for combining elements of flooring to create a contemporary aesthetic with the launch of Allura. I hope you enjoy this issue. Floors, Walls & Ceilings Images: Left: Style has designed and installed numerous wall panels that slide and spin across an open space Below left: The system offers complete flexibility to position the panels where they are needed, or cluster several together to add privacy whilst still leaving a sense of openness

F Brand new concept in flexible office space Style has helped transform the London offices of worldwide financial derivatives trading company, IG Group, by designing and installing numerous wall panels that slide and spin across an open space to create informal, collaborative meeting spaces for groups of anything from two to 20 people.

urther increasing functionality, both sides of the panels act as magnetic writable whiteboards which can be swivelled round to share ideas with other groups, effectively bringing them into the discussion. “This ingenious solution is perfect for collaborative working,” confirms Julian Sargent, Style’s Group Managing Director. “The system offers complete flexibility to position the panels where they are needed, or cluster several together to add privacy whilst still leaving a sense of openness.” FTSE 250 member, IG Group is a global leader in online trading, providing fast and flexible access to over 10,000 financial markets – including share, indices, forex, commodities and binaries. It now has over 152,600 clients worldwide, making millions of transactions per month. At its office in London, Style was approached by the architect firm for the project, ID:SR Sheppard Robson, which was working with BW to create a uniquely flexible, collaborative office space. “The concept of individual allocated offices was removed, to be replaced by innovative furniture pods,” explains Paul Etherington, Senior Project Manager for BW. “The openplan area needed to be highly adaptable, encouraging employees to gather to discuss ideas and share information, with the ability to screen themselves off as required, whilst using the walls as magnetic writable whiteboards.” “These radical demands were certainly challenging as we didn’t have a product that met the unique requirements,” comments Sargent. “Our design team had to go back to the drawing board, devising the optimum way to enable the wall panels to move freely, yet be secure when still and rotate when necessary.” “The feedback we have received from the client and their professional team has been outstanding,” confirms Etherington. “The redesign has delivered the wow factor and the staff are using the space positively, adapting to the agile new working environment.” The final solution is so ingenious that Style is already seeing orders for the same system from other major PLCs who can see what a difference this will make to how their employees work together. 8 www.style-partitions.co.uk

Interwall Flooring signs exclusive UK rights for Timbertherm innovation Interwall Flooring has announced that it has completed the integration of Timbertherm Flooring and has the exclusive rights to import and distribute Timbertherm wood flooring.

T

his new innovation provides a world-first alternative to dual wood floor and underfloor heating specifications. Its integral ‘smart-heat design’ provides style, health, installation and cost benefits – and is suitable for new-builds, renovations and retrofits. The full range of 20 finishes will be available exclusively from Interwall Flooring, with new designs to follow. Featuring integral Far Infrared technology, Timbertherm conducts heat through builtin nano-carbon conductors, warming to 26ºC (max) in less than five minutes. It can be installed – like a standard ‘tongue and

6

groove’ board – on most dry, level surfaces. Floor height issues associated with separate heating pads are eliminated, as is the subfloor preparation necessary with traditional wet underfloor heating systems. Timbertherm’s multi-layered construction has a sustainable hardwood surface layer and a water-resistant prefinish, making it ideal for all areas of the home, as well as commercial environments. It also creates a healthy heat – warming objects without raising dust particles – and minimises temperature fluctuations, for greater efficiency and reduced heating costs.

Floors, Walls & Ceilings Images: Here: FILA’s new kit contains DETERDEK, FUGAPROOF and FILACLEANER

Tile care made easy with new FILA kit

FILA has introduced a new care kit for ceramic and porcelain tiles. The new kit includes three products, for easy cleaning after laying, stain protection of joints and ongoing maintenance.

T

he kit promotes safe and effective maintenance, with the product trio contained in a sturdy, cardboard carry box – ideal for retailers and as a ‘leavebehind’ care kit in new installations. FILA’s new kit contains DETERDEK, FUGAPROOF and FILACLEANER. Designed for the post-installation or the ‘builder’s clean’, DETERDEK is a safe, concentrated acid cleaner that removes grout and polymer residues. It has a buffered acid solution, so doesn’t release fumes or erode joints and metal profiles like traditional muriatic acid. Following removal of residues and rinsing, FUGAPROOF is then applied to grout joints to protect against stains. The water-based

treatment, from FILA’s Green Line, is odourless, quick-drying and it doesn’t affect grout colour. As well as safeguarding the tiles’ aesthetic, it also makes ongoing maintenance easier and has GEV and ECIPLUS environmental certification. The third kit product, FILACLEANER, is also from FILA’s Green Line. The concentrated, pHneutral detergent is suitable for manual cleaning and for use with scrubber-dryer machines. For daily maintenance, it has a high coverage of 1500m2 per litre, at a dilution of 1:200; no rinsing is necessary and FILACLEANER leaves no residue at this dilution. It can also be used at a lower dilution for deep cleaning of all surfaces, including delicate materials.

Established in 1943, FILA is a global, ecofocused company. It specialises in surface care solutions for marble, natural stone, porcelain, terracotta and wood. Combining the traditional values of a family-run firm with innovative product development, FILA products are recommended by over 220 manufacturers throughout the world. eradesign acoustic ceiling and wall panels provide colour and texture which adds a sense of warmth and visual impact to an interior. Heradesign has visible wood-wool fibres that give it its distinctive textured finish. Heradesign is unique in that it can be made to match any colour as a ceiling in an exposed or concealed grid system, and as rafts, baffles or wall panels. In some buildings, a traditional suspended ceiling is not viable. In these situations, ceiling rafts or baffles are a versatile option for controlling sound. Monolithic, frameless Sonic Element ceiling rafts are lightweight, durable and easy to install. Fixed to the ceiling using discreet wires, they appear as if they are floating in air.Available in a range of shapes and colour options, Sonic Element ceiling rafts add visual appeal to an interior. Ceiling baffles are ideal for interiors fitted with hard surfaces, for example, glass atriums or classrooms with concrete soffits. By varying the distance between the rows of baffles or

10

changing the size of each baffle, the correct acoustic performance can be achieved. Knauf AMF manufactures baffles with smooth or textured surfaces and in a range of colours. Metal is a versatile, durable ceiling material which lends a contemporary industrial chic to both modern and classical interiors. This is ideal for classrooms, hospitals and offices where poor light can lead to deterioration in performance and health.

Mapei industrial flooring system installed at Morrisons Gadbrook Mapei’s Mapefloor i302 resin flooring has been installed in an area covering over 1200m2 at the Morrisons supermarket food processing plant in Northwich, Cheshire, to renovate the existing flooring and provide a safe and durable solution.

T

he area covered in this project was in preparation for the installation of a new food processing production line. Dates had already been set to install new machinery at the factory, so the project had to be completed within a short time frame so as not to delay further works, whilst simultaneously not compromising on quality of finish. The floorcovering was installed within one week, with the machinery being installed on time and the project completed to specification. Mapei’s technical specialists were heavily involved throughout the project, visiting the site with the contractors, Respol, prior to specification and installation to agree on the process. Consideration had to be given to the processing plant remaining operational during the preparation and installation of the flooring, therefore all operations had to be strictly controlled, particularly concerning the creation of dust and odours. Stuart Turley from installer, Respol, commented: “The system itself was easy to install and has proven to give a good finish.”

12

As the flooring was installed in a food processing plant, the products used for the new floor had to be ‘taint-free’, hence the specification of the Mapefloor i302 system, which is safe and compliant for use in areas of food preparation and storage. The versatility of the Mapefloor i302 SL product allowed it to be used as two systems; first as a high-build coating for foot traffic areas and secondly, as a self-levelling system for areas where forklift trucks would be operating. Floors, Walls & Ceilings Images: Left: The monolithic ceiling provides Class A sound absorption (0.95-1.00αw) which significantly decreases echo and reverberation levels, creating a relaxed environment where visitors can comfortably hear one another Below: Rockfon Mono Acoustic was installed in the Lake’s Boathouse function room to create a unique ‘wave’ ceiling design inspired by the waterside view

How Rockfon Mono Acoustic rows to the challenge Owned and managed by Eton College, Dorney Lake is a worldclass sporting and events venue with an inspiring Olympic heritage – the GB rowing team won 12 medals in London 2012. The Lake’s Boathouse function room offers magnificent meeting facilities and is the perfect place for events and conferences. Rockfon Mono Acoustic was installed here to create a unique ‘wave’ ceiling design inspired by the waterside view.

T

he Lake View Room at the Boathouse is a glass-fronted space which overlooks the grounds at Dorney Lake. Johann Schnaus, Architect, and Lucille Lepercq, Associate at S&Y Architects, were briefed to refurbish the space “…creating an identity and re-integrating it with Dorney Lake’s Olympic legacy. The new scheme had to incorporate high levels of flexibility and create a subtle personality to cater for a host of different functions and events. Rockfon Mono Acoustic played an important role in establishing the room’s identity and purpose. I would be very happy to specify this system again”. Rockfon Mono Acoustic is more than just a ceiling, now with a smoother, elegant render and even whiter surface, it brings together the seamless, clean lines associated with traditional plastered surfaces, and performance characteristics thought only possible with modular suspended ceiling and wall systems.

14

Three long, linear acoustic rendered rafts were installed in the Lake View Room. The central raft is curved to echo the flow of the lake outside. PANARC Interior Solutions, a certified Rockfon Mono Acoustic installer, carried out the installation at Dorney Lake. PANARC Business Development Manager, Daniel Davies, explains why Rockfon Mono Acoustic was the perfect solution: “We installed 270m² of Rockfon Mono Acoustic at Dorney Lake. Rockfon Mono Acoustic Flecto edge panels were used to produce the curved wave effect. The versatility and flexibility of Rockfon Mono Acoustic helped us to achieve the desired result which looks very impressive.” The Lake View Room can accommodate up to 100 guests. Thankfully, the monolithic ceiling provides Class A sound absorption (0.951.00αw) which significantly decreases echo and reverberation levels, creating a relaxed environment where visitors can comfortably hear one another.

Mike Potter at leisure industry specialist contractor, WFC, liked the versatility of Rockfon Mono Acoustic. “This was an unusual ceiling design and required a clever solution. Not only could Rockfon Mono Acoustic create this unique look, it also offered the acoustic control necessary for a large reverberant space. I particularly liked how the projector, screen and services integrated seamlessly with the ceiling. The finished look is very polished and is perfect for the building and its setting.” The ceiling allows for easy incorporation of lighting, air conditioning and ventilation systems and offers Class A2 fire protection. The stone wool tiles are dimensionally stable at up to 100% relative humidity and can be installed in temperatures ranging from 0˚C to 40˚C, allowing for installation to take place before windows are fully sealed. If your project calls for creative ceiling design, Rockfon is eager to use its expertise and technical knowledge to help you achieve your vision. Interface’s Global Change collection references familiar landscapes Interface has introduced Global Change, the first global launch from the company’s Lead Product Designer, Kari Pei. Global Change is Interface’s most versatile collection to date, pairing natureinspired biophilic design with Interface’s modular flooring system expertise.

T

he collection offers an integrated range of design options that can be composed to solve a variety of unique business challenges.

Nature-inspired design with global application

Global Change reflects the human need to seek out nature and brings these qualities to commercial interiors, including corporate office and hospitality environments. The collection offers architects and designers the ability to bring biophilic-inspired flooring into their spaces, leading to more positive experiences and improved wellbeing for the people who use them. The collection evokes foliage through artistic interpretation of tree and leaf-shading patterns. Biophilic elements and references are also reflected in random patterns and fluid transitions inspired by textures found in nature. Global Change comprises seven face styles available in six organic colour palettes. Progression I, Progression II and Progression III, the collection’s foundational tiles, offer three gradated base textures at three different price points and pile heights. Glazing and Shading take inspiration from the tree canopy with foliage appearing as positive shapes against striations of texture, while Raku and Ground resemble the cracked appearance of dried earth and can be installed as non-directional and directional squares respectively. The styles are available in a mixture of 50 x 50cm squares and 25 x 100cm Skinny Planks, ranging from flat to plush.

To complement the seven face tiles, the Interface design team developed six earthy, mineral-based colourways for the collection, inspired by global trends: Eclipse, Evening Dusk, Desert Shadow, Fawn, Daylight and Morning Mist. “Global Change takes the end-user on a journey from the forest to the coast, offering beautiful aesthetics that also deliver modular versatility and functionality,” said Kari Pei, Interface’s Lead Product Designer.“Each product within the collection was designed to harmoniously blend into the next, and the collection has the unique ability to adapt as design and tastes evolve.”

Flexible and adaptable modular system

While impactful as a collection, Global Change was also developed to coordinate with existing and future Interface collections and products, including its newly-launched luxury vinyl tile (LVT) collection, Level Set. This gives designers, specifiers and endusers ultimate flexibility to create seamless, eye-catching zones and pathways. Because the Interface flooring system is modular, customers can easily and efficiently update or replace the tiles to refresh designs. Collectively, Global Change has one of the lowest carbon footprints of any of Interface’s global collections to date. In line with Interface’s sustainability commitments, the Global Change collection uses recycled content.

Floors, Walls & Ceilings Loose-lay isolator membranes

Alternatively, Stopgap isolator membrane, a loose-lay isolator membrane can be laid directly onto the subfloor to provide a barrier between moisture and the floorcovering. Loose-lay isolator systems are also ideal for use with heritage floors, because the membrane allows a new floor to be adhered to its upper surface whilst protecting the floor beneath. By acting as a base to receive resilient floorcoverings and carpet tiles, loose-lay isolator membranes allow durable new floors to be installed and easily removed at a later date, allowing buildings to be returned to their original state. Fast and efficient methods to suppress subfloor moisture are readily available for different environments and settings, so that flooring contractors can offer a guaranteed, high-quality floor finish, whatever the deadline or size of the job. 8 www.f-ball.co.uk *

Selecting the right moisture management system

mail@f-ball.co.uk 361633

( 01538

When beginning a new flooring installation or refurbishment, F. Ball advises contractors to take the time to thoroughly assess the composition and condition of the subfloor before specifying the correct subfloor preparation products.

E

xcess subfloor moisture in particular, when left untreated, can lead to costly remedial work that could easily be avoided by using modern, waterproof surface membrane systems.

Making the right start

Following initial preparation of the subfloor, a moisture measurement test should be carried out to determine the relative humidity levels of the subfloor. If left untreated, damp can cause adhesives to debond, carpet underlays to rot, wooden floors to warp and resilient floorcoverings to blister. It may also promote the growth of mould, which may stain and risk further damage to the floorcovering. F. Ball advises using a calibrated digital hygrometer to accurately measure subfloor moisture. If the relative humidity (RH) levels are 75% or above (65% or above for wooden floorcoverings) then a moisture protection system should be applied, to impede the passage of rising damp or residual construction moisture.

18

Epoxy moisture management systems

Sometimes contractors need to install flooring in environments where damp is particularly likely to manifest, or areas where high levels of moisture are already present. In such instances, solvent-free epoxy resin systems are available that are effective up to RH levels of 98%. The best epoxy resin waterproof surface membrane systems, such as F. Ball’s Stopgap F77, offer a barrier against moisture in just one coat, with an accelerated formulation that cures in approximately three hours.

Floors, Walls & Ceilings

Forbo’s new Allura collection shapes up beautifully Forbo Flooring Systems has refreshed its popular luxury vinyl tile (LVT) collection, Allura, in response to the growing trend for combining shapes, sizes and colours to create contemporary floor spaces.

B

y playing with scale, direction and combinations across the range, the manufacturer has introduced new tile shapes and sizes that are ideal for use across the hotel, leisure and retail sectors. The Allura collection now includes new large-scale 180 x 32cm giant oak planks and 1 x 1m tiles, as well as small 50 x 15cm planks. The new XXL plank sizes have been designed to help achieve the illusion of larger

and lighter areas in buildings where space is limited, and can be used to create more spacious and social interiors whilst emulating the Scandinavian design trend for a neutral feel and finish. The smaller planks can be used creatively in smaller areas or within the body of more traditional floor designs. A new Hungarian Point plank, cut on a 45° angle, allows realistic herringbone and chevron designs to be created with ease.

Part of Forbo’s largest ‘wood’ offer to date, there are exciting new contemporary solids and more planks than ever before, with in-register embossing to bring designs to life. For a fresh approach to stone, new marble options bring a soft, natural angular flow to a timeless floor design. “Allura is 100% phthalate-free, REACH compliant and produced in Europe with low emission levels,” says Julie Dempster, Marketing Manager at Forbo.“The excellent dimensional stability ensures safe and hygienic floors, as dirt isn’t trapped in the seams; and the superior embossed lacquering system guarantees longlasting appearance retention and improves the resistance to stains and scratches. Our customers will also find natural stress-reducing designs and high LRVs in the collection. These are just some of the many ways in which Allura can help to create better indoor and outdoor environments.” 8 www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/allura * info.flooring.uk@forbo.com ( 0844
