espite the extreme floods that caused major devastation across the country earlier this year, it seems sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are still not being prioritised as the Government has announced yet more delays in implementing SuDS for new projects. What’s more, it seems that impermeable paving is now causing severe problems with downstream flooding. In this month’s issue, we unveil a striking project that has been designed and specified to combat water ingress. This details an outstanding extension to The Städel Museum in Frankfurt. Below ground, a self-contained exhibition space is lit with a striking array of skylights. Above ground, the grid formation of skylights provides an outstanding landscaping feature and a perfect complement to the main building. Here, Kemper System reveals how it achieved a complete water-tight solution. Turn to page 6 to find out more. Also in this edition, we’ve integrated FC&A’s exclusive show guide for Ecobuild. From page 38, you will find a selection of exhibitor profiles highlighting their recent and mostestablished offerings. Our handpicked selection includes Flowcrete, which will unveil its ground-breaking flooring system. Set to take centre stage, GREEN Floorzone is a single warranty floor build-up programme featuring a number of sustainable options. Elsewhere, Dura Composites looks at the growing demand for composite products, namely decking. Turn to page 44 to see why this solution provider should be on your show itinerary. We also round up previews from renowned suppliers such as Timberplay, Bosch, Pegler Yorkshire and CANAL Architectural. I hope you enjoy this issue. Don’t forget you can also access all the latest features, product news and supplier information at your fingertips via FC&A’s state-of-the-art app. Available for both smart phones and tablets, the app can be downloaded free-of-charge from Google Play or the App Store.

‘Garden Halls’ not only provides a distinctive and contemporary underground exhibition space but has also created an external landscaping feature
An eye for detail While the purpose of museums and galleries is to showcase the exhibits inside, it’s no coincidence that many of the world’s most famous museums are also amongst the architectural world’s most celebrated buildings. Look at the Louvre in Paris, the Guggenheim in Bilbao and London’s own Tate Modern, for example.
F
ounded in 1815 when banker and spice merchant, Johann Friedrich Städel bequeathed his house and art collection as a public institute that would bear his name, The Städel Museum in Frankfurt continues to use the same imposing but unremarkable building as its main exhibition space today. However, there have been numerous extensions and modernisations during the course of the museum’s 200 year history. The latest, the €35m ‘Garden Halls’, not only provides a distinctive and contemporary underground exhibition space but has also created an external landscaping feature which is both unique and in keeping with the Städel’s status as the home of one of the most significant art collections in Europe.
Dual purpose The creation of an extension to the museum below ground provides a selfcontained, contemporary exhibition space that extends the available space without creating any architectural conflict with the existing traditional facade. However, the

real genius of this building is not in the physical space of the new underground building but in the roof of that building, which provides natural light and also forms the substrate for a new garden area that is a striking green space in the daytime and provides eye-catching feature lighting at night. At the heart of that achievement is the perfect geometry of 195 round skylights or ‘Eyes on Art’ as the Museum calls them, positioned in a grid formation on the undulating domed lawn that forms the roof of the Garden Halls extension. These ‘Eyes’ bring sunlight into the new building during the day and enable artificial light to illuminate the lawn from within the extension at night. The idea is simple in concept, spectacular in its realisation and technically challenging for architects Schneider + Schumacher who won an international design competition for the 3000m2 extension. The roof substrate of the extension had to be both sufficiently well waterproofed to ensure that the underground extension was safe from

water ingress and suitably root resistant as the base for the garden lawn/green roof planting – and with 195 Eyes on Art creating so much detailing, this was no easy task! The solution to meeting this challenge was to use a cold liquid applied waterproof membrane and waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, was brought in to advise on the specification and application of a suitable membrane. Explains Stuart Hicks from Kemper System UK: “Kemper System Germany was involved with planning the roofing element of the Städel Museum project from the early design stages to ensure that the design concept was deliverable and could provide a lasting water-tight solution. The architects

Stuart continues: “Kemperol 2K-PUR is a solvent-free system based on a castor oil formulation using sustainable crops. The solvent-free resin is used in conjunction with a non-woven reinforcement fleece, which is manufactured using recycled plastic bottles, and the two elements are installed in a single process to create a seamless, monolithic membrane that cannot delaminate and has a service life in excess of 25 years.”
Single process The reinforced concrete extension is supported by just 12 interior columns and the outside walls, rising to a height of 8.2m at the centre of the domed roof. Each of the circular Eyes on Art skylights have a diameter of between 1.5 and 2.5m and the circular

wanted to use a long-term and homogenous waterproofing product that would be durable enough to withstand footfall and flexible enough to cope with the contours of the dome-shaped roof. The chosen system also had to avoid any mechanical anchors to the skylight structures and seal the complex detailing accurately and this was a significant challenge that could only be addressed by a reinforced liquid membrane.” In addition to the practical considerations for the waterproof membrane specification, the architects and the Museum were keen to ensure that the chosen system also answered the environmental and sustainability aims of the whole project. As a result, Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquid-applied membrane was chosen.
bulls eye glass windows are each housed in a square concrete flange that raises the top of each Eye above the roof substrate, allowing the finished glazed circles to lie flush with the top of the green roof build up. “The complex network of a grid of concrete squares topped off by circular windows made for a geometry that was extremely difficult to seal,” explains Stuart, “which is why only a liquid applied system could really have answered the needs of the project. Even so, installation required careful planning and specialist skills and several meetings were held on site involving Kemper System, the architects and the contractor, PB Flachdachbau, to ensure a good end result.” Kemperol 2K-PUR is suitable for application on any substrate and forms a permanent bond. Particular attention was required to ensure suitable preparation of the substrate and sealing of the light domes and PB Flachdachbau erected heated tents to enable preparation of the substrate and installation of the waterproofing membrane despite very cold and inclement weather. The concrete surfaces that lie beneath the skylight flanges were either sanded or blasted, depending on individual requirements at different parts of the site and the installation team applied Kemper System’s solvent-free Kempertec EP5 primer, which can be applied in temperatures as low as 50C. Once the primer had cured, PB Flachdachbau began the painstaking process of applying the Kemperol 2K-PUR membrane, using small rollers to apply the liquid system to awkward areas. The installation was completed in sections with the application of resin followed by

laying of the reinforcement fleece, which was cut to size and shape on site to fit the contours of each detail exactly, with overlaps to ensure that the system’s full integrity is maintained throughout the roof/garden surface. Once the fleece had been laid, the installation team rollered the surface to remove any air bubbles and ensure complete saturation before applying more resin and leaving each section to cure.

Stuart continues: “Because Kemperol 2K-PUR is solvent-free, there were no issues with nuisance odours, either for the installation team or for visitors to the museum.”

■
Once the entire roof/garden surface had been waterproofed, the green roof build up could begin, transforming the studded roof into a spotted garden. The green roof is a grass only surface with interest provided by the gentle slopes of the dome and the Eyes on Art, with the addition of coloured lights in the evening. Stuart adds: “Green roofs have become relatively commonplace and Kemperol 2K-PUR has proven long-term root resistance in compliance with FLL standards. For the specification of this green roof, however, the specification challenge was not only to select a product that was suitable for the roof build up but to ensure that the chosen system was applied with expert precision to leverage the durability and flexibility of a membrane that will provide reliable protection from water ingress for generations of art lovers.”

The first stages of PRP Architect’s public realm regeneration at the east London Brownfield estate make extensive use of colourful precast concrete paving.
Sustainable improvements A master-plan approach was adopted, intended to be cohesive and responsive

and no defensible space to frontages, the streetscape was bleak. Usable open space was sparse and there were few play facilities. This regeneration project, designed by PRP for Poplar HARCA, aims to transform the public realm associated with both existing and new infill dwellings, creating new, improved building entrances and connections to the wider area.
T
he Brownfield Estate began to be developed in the 1950s and now has a settled resident base and strong local identity. It incorporates a conservation area, linked to the local landmark Chrisp Street Market with its innovative ‘Idea Store’ community library. The Estate also includes listed, iconic high-rise blocks, designed by ‘brutalist’ architect Ernö Goldfinger in the late 60s and early 70s – Balfron Tower, Carradale House and Glenkerry House – which contrast with the surrounding low-rise buildings. Before regeneration, a key issue with the Estate was the variable quality and character of the urban realm, which was ill-defined with uncertainty about identifying public or private spaces and fronts or backs of buildings. With standard width carriageways, very wide pavements

to existing neighbourhood constraints – so ensuring long-term, sustainable improvements. The design works within the general layout of the existing, refurbished buildings and adopted streets, but introduces new buildings to improve the streetscape: in addition to a new residential tower on Willis Street, two infill sites, contained by 1950s maisonette blocks, are being developed.
A simple palette Public realm interventions seek to clearly define footpaths and defensible space, introduce new front gardens for low-rise buildings and add new public spaces to give a sense of arrival. Art will be introduced at key points and trees added more widely to soften the environment. Parking will be distributed throughout the Estate, not concentrated in parking courts, and a new ‘white light’ scheme introduced. In terms of materiality, the designers aim to unify disparate elements of the site using a simple palette of hard landscape materials, developing a language that unites the neighbourhood. Wherever possible, multi-use streets and spaces are developed – bold and contemporary in character,
12
using robust and high quality landscape elements. Designs are characterised by a uniform application of concrete block paving on un-adopted, HARCA land with feature paving announcing estate entrances and around key buildings. Here, concrete flags in strong colours are arranged in bands to create a bold linear feel. Then, throughout the scheme, silver-grey concrete setts, with enhanced granite surface adding sparkle, highlight footways, while charcoal setts identify private amenity space, Other materials are also used, such as resin bound gravel and tarmac to match existing adopted highways. Edges and transformations are defined by enhancedfinish concrete kerbs, some laid flush, others raised. The material palette is complemented by high quality street furniture – seating, bins, tree grills and reflector lighting.
Key public space The Panoramic Tower Plaza, located off Willis Street in front of the new residential tower, acts as a gateway to the Estate. As a key public space it uses concrete flag linear paving, in bold colours to complement the

buildings, and feature planting to identify one of the main east-west pedestrian routes through the site. The linear paving also reflects the verticality of the tower facade.
Streetscape value The linearity of the paving contrasts with the informality of the adjacent Local Area Play (LAP) space. Carefully detailed, cut granite units define curved edges between hard and soft landscape while treecircle units coordinate with the modular concrete paving grid. Surrounding existing buildings will have new front gardens with defensible planting to soften the building edge. A long, seven-storey block – Langdon House – plays a prominent role at the heart of the Estate. This went unrecognised by its previous ill-defined building accesses and grass strip fronted by a low wall of little streetscape value. The new design is based on the symmetry of the building, with linear bands of low planting and a central tree avenue. Two matching plazas now announce the new entrances with adjacent black water-walls and public art installations in
Sustainability in Development
Enhanced identity Although the central area, Adderley Green, originally contained open green space, it was largely under-used (other than by dogs). The pedestrian avenue was unattractive with an uneven surface. Linear concrete flag feature paving now enhances the identity and quality of the avenue with new trees replacing old diseased examples. Enhanced finish concrete kerbs are used to define areas, raised up to protect planting or laid flush for accessibility. The open space has been structured as a focus for play with a real identity, working around retained mature trees. It now includes a Local Equipped Area for Play (LEAP) and a new ball court with decorative screen. Good connections to the rest of the Estate have been clearly defined. The contrasting Susannah Street, which was a bland, under-used pedestrian area separating two rows of houses, has been brought to life with a diagonal design of planters surrounded by modular paving, working around retained mature trees.
Linear concrete flag feature paving now enhances the identity and quality of the avenue
Here, silver-grey concrete setts, with a granite surface adding sparkle, continue the linear theme with planted areas protected by raised, enhanced finish concrete kerbs. Although Ida Street’s typical residential street layout has been largely retained, its random surface materials have been replaced with a more rigorous application of high quality concrete block paving, with silver grey for pedestrian areas and charcoal for parking, alongside a new tarmac carriageway. Tree and shrub planting, and high quality street furniture add to the enlivened streetscape.
Details in the design This is an exemplary scheme, demonstrating the importance of considered, detailed design and execution in the public realm. The completed first phases of the project – shown here – highlight the transformative power of good landscape design and the potential of precast concrete paving. Interpave has published a case study exploring the project which, together with other case studies and guidance on various issues ranging from Sustainability to SuDS, can be downloaded via the Interpave information resource online.

front. These plazas are characterised by strong coloured concrete flag linear paving, continuing out into the wider environment as raised shared surfaces (still to be added) within the street itself. Concrete block paved parking and footpaths link the plazas.

Voice of the Industry
In the UK the ARB fulfils the role of the competent authority for architects
Emma Matthews, Head of Qualifications, at the Architects Registration Board (ARB) explains the current system of educating architects and discusses why the ARB are currently scoping a review of the routes to registering as an architect.
T
he Architects Registration Board (ARB) is the UK’s statutory regulator of architects. To use the title architect in the UK in business or in practice an individual must be registered with the ARB. The regulator’s role is set out in the 1997 Architects Act, one of the ARB’s key duties is prescribing – or ‘recognising’ the qualifications needed to become an architect.
Current routes to registration An individual can currently apply to register with the ARB via one of the following routes: • UK qualifications For individuals who hold UK qualifications recognised by the ARB at Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 levels including 24 months appropriate experience. • EU qualifications For EU nationals who have obtained qualifications listed in the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC) and

concerned by the impact of any possible changes on standards within the profession. The debate centres around whether the current pathway model of qualifications progressing step by step from Part 1, to Part 2 to Part 3 should be replaced with a gateway model. Such a model could result in a much wider range of routes to registration but the gateway to the final accreditation would have to be rigorous enough to ensure appropriate testing of knowledge, skills and experience could be conducted. In July 2013 the ARB’s Board considered the suggestion of a review of routes to registration. The regulator’s Board members were mindful of two key factors which could significantly impact on the outcome of
who can practice in their own country. • Non recognised UK qualifications and overseas qualifications For individuals who hold a qualification which is neither prescribed by the ARB nor recognised by the Professional Qualifications Directive, there is an alternative route. These individuals can take the ARB’s own Prescribed Examination at Parts 1 and 2 followed by a Part 3 Examination in Professional Practice and Management at a UK school of architecture and 24 months appropriate experience. Over recent years there have been calls for a review of the above routes to registration. Proponents of change feel that it is time for a more flexible system of education whereby individuals with degrees in related disciplines could transfer to a postgraduate architecture course. Some are also very concerned about the length of time spent studying and the related costs faced by students. Others are

Voice of the Industry any such review. Firstly, the UK government is conducting a periodic review of the ARB and the regulation of architects in 2014 and secondly, a piece of EU legislation entitled the Professional Qualifications Directive has to be integrated into national regulations by January 2016. As a result of the uncertainty created by both of these factors the ARB’s Board decided that, during 2014, a scoping exercise only would be undertaken. This will help ensure that any changes arising from the Periodic Review and the EU’s revised Professional Qualifications Directive can be taken into account when the review of routes to registration is undertaken and that all revisions will be aligned with one another. As part of ARB’s 2014 business plan, the organisation has set the objective of scoping a fundamental review of routes to registration. This will involve exploring whether registration should continue to be qualifications based and whether alternative methodologies would widen access to the Register whilst maintaining standards of competence. It will involve investigating whether current arrangements remain fit for purpose. The ARB will also look at current best practice in other sectors and other equivalent regulators. Consideration will also be given to any implications for change at an EU and international level. A number of key stakeholders have conducted, or are in the process of conducting reviews which cover, either wholly or in part, the subject of the education of architects and routes to registration. These include Sir Terry Farrell’s Independent Review of Architecture and the Built Environment commissioned by Culture and Creative Industries Minister Ed Vaizey; RIBA’s Education Review and the white

paper produced by the UK Architecture Education Review Group. The main purpose of the EU Professional Qualifications Directive is to facilitate the movement of appropriately qualified individuals within the European Economic Area. Each Member State must nominate a competent authority to ensure that the legislation is implemented. In the UK the ARB fulfils the role of the competent authority for architects. In January 2014 revisions to the EU Professional Qualifications Directive were published. Member States have two years to consider the implications of this new legislation and incorporate any changes into law. Under the current Directive, the minimum training requirements for architects are set at four years of study at University level. Architectural qualifications which comply with this, and are approved by Member States and the European Commission, can be recognised anywhere in Europe.
■
As part of ARB’s 2014 business plan, the organisation has set the objective of scoping a fundamental review of routes to registration
Under the revised Directive, the minimum requirements for training are at least five years of academic study with no requirement for practical training experience (5+0); or four years of academic study and two years of mandatory professional traineeship undertaken under certain conditions (4+2). The key point here is that under the new Directive, the training requirements for architects remain minimum requirements across Europe, and these have been increased. This means that Member States can still maintain or adopt appropriate additional requirements for accessing the profession and the title in their country, in the UK, the existing Part 3 qualification falls into this category. Changes in EU legislation are not in themselves drivers for change to routes to registering as an architect in the UK. Nonetheless, legislative changes at an EU level can impact on the system of education of architects in the UK. It is, as yet, unclear what impacts the revised provisions of the Directive may have on each Member State’s existing requirements for training and access to the profession. ARB is currently analysing the new EU legislation and engaging with stakeholders, including professional studies advisers, schools of architecture and the RIBA, to ensure that they are kept up to date with accurate information and to seek input and views as interpretations develop. The ARB is committed to conducting an objective scoping exercise of a review of routes to registration. The ARB will seek and consider the views of its stakeholders. Issues of widening access to the profession will be given serious consideration with a view to seeing if changes are viable whilst at the same time maintaining standards of competence for the benefit of the public and the profession.

Flex by name, flexible by nature
Daikin Altherma Flex outdoor unit
Space Air Solutions, Guildford-based subsidiary of the Daikin Distributor, Space Airconditioning, specialises in the Daikin Altherma range of heat pumps. The awardwinning Daikin Altherma Flex was initially developed to cover large-scale commercial applications where space heating and hot water production are a priority. This air to water heat pump system reduces carbon emissions and energy bills.
L
eaving water temperatures from 25° to 80°C make the Flex system suitable for all types of heat emitters as well as hot water production. Typical applications include those where there is a higher demand for hot water. However the Flex system is equally suited to larger homes and in particular, apartment buildings or collective housing. The ‘Flex’ is the first centralised air source, air to water, heat pump system to allow independent control and billing of heating and domestic hot water within each individual dwelling that it supplies. The Flex system, features “cascade refrigeration cycle technology”. The
purpose of a cascade system is to attain pressures and temperatures, which cannot be achieved by using only one refrigerant cycle. The aim is to get the best characteristics out of two active cycles.
Cascade cycle The outdoor units (between 23 and 45kW capacity), are based on the market leading Daikin VRV technology, these absorb heat energy from the ambient air and elevate the temperature and pressure level of the first refrigerant cycle (R-410A), while the indoor unit ramps this heat energy to higher levels via the second refrigerant cycle (R-134a), resulting in
water temperatures up to 80°C using only renewable heat and heat pump technology, with no need for supplementary electric heaters. The system can be connected to Daikin hot water or thermal storage tanks as well as existing third party tanks. Daikin solar heating systems can also be integrated. The high leaving water temperatures of Daikin Altherma Flex Type also make it well suited to upgrading existing heating systems, allowing the retention of standard radiators.
Low running costs The modular construction of Daikin Altherma Flex, combined with several capacity classes of indoor units, allows precise configuration for specific needs and optimum efficiency. The Daikin Altherma Flex from Space Air is today’s answer to current and future issues of increasing energy costs and the high environmental impact associated with combustion based heating systems. The Flex system’s cascade technology, in combination with inverter control of the compressors and weather dependant temperature control, results in extremely efficient operation with running costs as much as 36% lower than comparable oil or gas installations and up to 71% reduced CO2 emissions.

The MCIAT Professional Assessment
– a new qualifying route What is the MCIAT Professional Assessment?
The MCIAT Professional Assessment is a flexible, rigorous, robust and quality assured qualifying process, based on performance and designed to recognise the diversity of Architectural Technology. Candidates must provide an in-depth critical analysis clearly summarising their professional experience. This should be a reflective report and should refer to challenges and successes encountered whilst working on projects and how any issues were resolved. Applicants should also undertake a self-evaluation highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in relation to their area(s) of practice. The Professional Assessment process is based on four core competencies: • Designing • Managing • Practising • Developing (self)
Who can apply for the MCIAT Professional Assessment? Any applicant working in or on, for example, academia, general practice, component design, refurbishment, small residential projects, large commercial projects etc within Architectural Technology, should be able to apply their own experience to the Professional Assessment process, but they must hold one of the following membership grades: ACIAT, TCIAT or profile candidate. Each application will be assessed on its merit. However, each applicant will need to demonstrate a sufficient level of knowledge and understanding and professional competence/experience in relation to their sphere/s of practice and demonstrate to the Institute they can meet the expectations of a Chartered Architectural Technologist, MCIAT.
How much does it cost? To apply for the Professional Assessment, applicants are required to pay £300 for the assessment of the application and the Professional Assessment Interview.

Technical Focus: Acoustics
The evolution of open plan Open-plan work spaces have been in existence since the 1950s and went on to form the basis of the traditional office landscape. The actual impracticalities of this layout are now widely recognised, with acoustics and the requirement for flexible, multi-purpose spaces becoming a priority. Steve Crompton, Sales Director for Sektor, discusses the various interior solutions that are available to achieve both a productive and efficient work space.
W
hilst 70 to 80% of offices worldwide are still open plan, many companies are now finding that the negative aspects of disruption and lack of privacy are resulting in working habits that are not always as efficient as they could be. Ultimately, it is now in agreement that open plan can not suit the wide range of work styles that are present in the average workplace. This reasoning is combined with property and rental prices that climb ever higher, meaning that maximising the layout of any working environment, from corporate offices to hospitals, is essential. One of the reoccurring problems experienced in an open plan space are the acoustics with clattering keyboards, phone calls, and conversations to contend with. If any sectioned off areas do exist, glass is often
the material of choice which hasn’t always been successful when attempting to create a private or acoustically-sound area. The continued demand to produce a light and bright office, which naturally suggests that glass has to remain the material of choice, whilst ramping up the acoustic specification is something that manufacturers have had to consider. This has resulted in the creation of acoustically-sound glass partitioning which not only provides the right aesthetic, but can provide privacy or an area for undisrupted work when needed. Partitioning systems are now available which provide up to 58dB sound attenuation with even fully glazed options reaching 50dB. These floor to ceiling glass partitions can also provide up to 60 minutes fire resistance. Development in partition joints can additionally provide a completely flush aesthetic, especially when installed alongside
frameless offices and doors. In addition to the traditional options for vertical mullions, dry glazed joints can give the appearance that the glass simply butts up against the next pane. Seamless transition from glazed to solid elevations also provides further flexibility to provide the essence of an open plan layout, without the need for full exposure. For end-users who are placing a large investment in creating the ultimate creative space for employees, this attention to detail can go a long way to achieving their vision.
Flexible solutions Moveable walls are an ideal way to create the flexibility that many end-users now demand. Most commonly used to turn smaller meeting rooms into larger boardrooms, whether in an office, hotel, or training facility, modern moveable walls can also include acoustic properties with seals at the top and bottom. Laboratory tests have shown that they can achieve sound attenuation from 40db to 57db, but onsite tests are of course recommended. For specifiers and contractors, interior products not only need to have the right aesthetics and meet requirements such as fire protection or acoustics, but be quick and simple to install. Flexibility with existing components, backed by stock availability and rapid delivery are as important to creating the ideal interior space as the product solution itself. However unique the interior design or stringent the requirements from the client, tried and tested solutions exist on the market to deliver a range of aesthetics for any type of interior. Innovation in partitioning systems, moveable walls, and privacy options has meant that the demand for a flexible space that can be social and private can now be easily met.

Valued service The right windows can provide real ‘wow factor’ to a building and in the case of timber offer real carbon savings, says Iain McIlwee, Chief Executive of the British Woodworking Federation, but whilst the design possibilities seem endless, architects and specifiers also need to be aware that windows are another product required to meet stringent new energy efficiency standards.
U
nder Part L of the regulations, all windows installed in a new home or refurbishment project must have a declared U-value.The U-value is a measurement of heat loss and the lower the value, the better – it indicates a more energy efficient product with lower carbon emissions. U-values differ depending
24
on the material used for the window and certain buildings may require a specific U-value to comply with building regulations. U-values are not only a requirement of building regulations, but also of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), introduced last year. For the window manufacturer this requires them to have a U-value calculation undertaken (and validated by a notified body if the manufacturer has more than 10 employees and a turnover below €2million). The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) provides a U-value calculation service for its members to ensure calculations are exact. After using specialist software, where necessary, the calculations are then verified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA), hence making CE Marking possible. The manufacturer is then supplied with a certificate in accordance with Part L and this is the information that should be passed on to the architect or specifier. The obvious benefits of CE marking windows for specifiers is the information available about the window. Manufacturers are obliged to provide information via a Declaration of Performance (DoP) document.Within the document the manufacturer lists how the window performs in relation to the ‘essential characteristics’, a declaration of dangerous substances used and the load bearing capacity of safety devices. The DoP must
For a faster response visit www.fca-magazine.com or use the free reader enquiry card
always be made available to the specifier either via the manufacturer’s website or sent direct. This information should make specifying simpler by ensuring the chosen window meets the client’s requirements and the required U-value, helping you to meet your environmental sustainability targets and to ensure compliance. CE Marking, however, falls short of Certification where a product is not only tested once, but regularly retested and the factory is subject to annual audit visits to ensure the product continues to meet the performance defined in the original test. There will be occasions where windows are exempt from CE marking. A project that is exempt from building regulations will not require windows to be CE marked, as is the case for bespoke windows that have been designed and manufactured for one specific project. Specifying compliant windows can be a headache for specifiers but by following the steps above and ensuring the manufacturer can provide the correct documents and validation makes the process simpler and less stressful. Wood windows can meet the most rigorous requirements of current regulation and if correctly specified can provide service life in excess of 60 years and huge carbon savings (according to recent research by Herriot-Watt University available through the Wood Window Alliance).

Lighting
A paradigm shift Noel Marciniak, Head of Product Marketing and Planning, Toshiba Lighting EU talks to FC&A about LED lighting systems as an energy-efficient and longlasting answer to the deficit left by now-discontinued incandescent lighting.
S
ince the phasing out of incandescent lighting began, we have witnessed a revolution in how we think about lighting our homes, businesses and streets. At Toshiba, we are leading this innovative movement, focused on the development of LED lighting that will provide easier, cleaner, safer living for generations to come. There has been much discussion about LED lacking ambient quality, and not being able to effectively fill the shoes of its predecessor. What we are now discovering, is that LED can in fact usher in a new era of lighting, not as an afterthought, but as central to our lives and our habitat. Energy savings are an increasingly important design consideration for architects today, in commercial properties and homes alike. This has something to do with cutting the costs of rising energy bills, but is also in aid of working towards a cleaner more sustainable future, with ecologically sound buildings the goal of many. LED lighting systems are a key partner in this mission: an energy-efficient and long-lasting answer to the deficit left by now-discontinued incandescent lighting. An increase of more than 500% in lifespan means that they also present savings in

a state-of-the-art user interface remotely operated by the curator. This project was a crucial step for us in proving that LED can be used to improve lighting quality for even the most complex of structures and subjects. By the end of 2014, we will have tackled the replacement of fittings in the Cour Carré and the Napoleon Hall, just beneath the iconic Pyramid. However, the next step for improving the efficiency of building with LED requires us to take an even further leap: making integrated solutions readily available. Currently, the competitive market has made strides in the retrofit category, fitting LED solutions in to existing lighting networks. Architecturally speaking, the transition to integrated systems means moving from simply attaching lighting options to a structure towards building LED lighting directly into the structure, making for greater accuracy, control and atmosphere. The goal of this initiative is to make existing techniques work alongside each other and create new technologies which actively improve quality of life, user safety and at the same time reduce their environmental impact. Our mission is LED lighting that actively contributes to a connected cityscape.

maintenance costs. What’s more, the highly specific dimming features on many lamps and luminaires allow for atmosphere control through precise light distribution, enhance user comfort and again contribute to additional energy savings.
Crucial steps In terms of ambient lighting, the industry has seen huge developments in the last few years, such as Toshiba’s ongoing collaborative project with the Louvre museum. Stage 1, completed in December 2011, replaced all existing solutions with LED fixtures in the outdoor areas of the Cour Napoeleon, Pyramid and Pyramidions at the museum. June 2013 saw the completion of the 2nd stage, lighting the indoor Red Rooms including perhaps the world’s most famous painting: the Mona Lisa. Here, the challenge was to work with rather than against the natural light that the rooms already received, and to provide a remotely controllable, shifting spectrum of light, keeping the enigmatic face of La Joconde lit with a consistent and comprehensive ‘natural’ light throughout the day and night. In the solutions used to light the Mona Lisa, we also provided precision controlled LED lighting, by connecting the fixtures to

Design & Desire Chalet Husky is a brand new seven-bedroom chalet, designed and built by Jean-Charles Covarel
Alpine luxury Val d’Isere has been popular with British snow lovers for at least 30 years. Compared to uber-rich Courchevel – its only real rival in terms of caché – Val d’Isere is a flashy resort, but it is a flashy resort where people go to ski, not pose. Its skiing is sporty with tree-lined slopes and technical passes, which is in contrast to the open motorways of Courchevel. Here, FC&A profiles the hottest new property on the piste.

s a result of the resort’s popularity over the last 30 years its property market is relatively mature. This means that new land is extremely hard to find and most chalet projects – either as singles or collections – take place on land formerly occupied

by older chalet properties which are now outdated either as complete renovation projects or taken new from ground. Nicholas Leach, Partner at Athena Advisors comments: “There has been an unusually high amount of single-dwelling development in the alps over the last year. At least three times the number of chalets have been built compared with recent years. This is largely due to the pent up demand as a result of a large volume of buyers sitting on the fence for so long and
Design & Desire perfectly with the old village of Val d’Isere. The decoration mixes features of stone and wood with all modern facilities. The properties range from 120 to 609m2 in size and all bedrooms are en-suite. The first preoccupation of the developer when designing Le Petit Alaska was to ensure that luxury was prominent in every aspect of the development – location, architecture, facilities and finishes. Priced at €12m, Chalet Husky took two ski seasons to build (construction can only take place during the summer) by a team of more than 20.

now jumping off. This rush to the market has created a lot of demand for a limited supply. “The big popular resorts have seen most development. For example in Val d’Isere normally just two or three properties are built each season, yet last year eight were built in one project alone and we’ve sold all but one of these already.” Chalet Husky is part of the “Le Petit Alaska” project, a new take on a traditional ‘hameau’ of chalets. Le Petit Alaska is made
up of eight luxurious chalets situated in a prime location in Val d’Isere. These properties have been designed to meet the expectations of a demanding clientele, and therefore offer fine finishes and prestigious services such as spacious terraces, private parking spaces, private individual spas, swimming pools and lifts for the larger units. Designed by architects of dedicated developer Covarel, the chalets are inspired by Savoyard architecture and blend in

The key member of the team is of course Jean-Charles Covarel as LPA and Chalet Husky were his visions. Born and raised in Val d’Isere himself, it was he who built the Val d’Isere home of Jean Claud Killy, whom the Espace Killy ski region is named after. Jean Claud Killy of course being the alpine skiing legend & triple Olympic champion who was also brought up in Val d’Isere. There are lots of chalet developers in the alps, but Covarel sets himself apart from the rest in two specific ways. Firstly, he instead of building to order like the majority of mainstream developers in the alps (upon the sale of a plot), Covarel pre-finances the projects entirely himself, he then builds the properties the way he wants, with his own team (no outsourcing) and then finds a buyer afterwards – buying ‘off the shelf’. With high end properties, especially super luxury chalets, where buyers’ personal preferences are highly important, this is a unique way of doing

things. The demand for his properties is therefore a testament to the quality. Secondly, he is the only chalet developer to have his own local atelier workshop, in Annecy which is run by his own directly employed craftsman. Unlike most chalet developers he does not sub-contract out any of the large parts of the build, instead he has his own full time carpenters, electricians, plumbers who he has worked with for years and therefore know his style. The features within Chalet Husky are truly outstanding comprising a 200m2 living area, unlike anything in the alps. From west to east, the first floor of Chalet Husky features a Sejour (living area) traditional fireplace. From the Sejour, via a cleverly designed glass bridge which takes you across and through the naturally-light indoor atrium garden, you enter the expansive core of the property; formed of the Cuisine (kitchen), Salle a Manger (dining area seating 18+ comfortably) and the ‘Espace Bar’ – a skilfully created area entirely devoted to relaxation and entertaining with friends and family.
to natural light, even if it resides within the external outline of the property. Whilst the essence of the property has been designed for the winter months,Val d’Isere remains popular during the warmer summer months so the developer has made outside space an important feature. In total there is over 91m2 of exterior space design to provide both private and communal outside areas which exploit the surrounding views. This also includes a ‘Pelouse’, a green lawn-style area. In total, Chalet Husky contains seven bedrooms with 609m2 living space, a 32m2 private swimming pool with glass walls and waterfall, an indoor atrium garden, and an inside climbing wall and shooting range. Elsewhere a first floor lounge, kitchen, dining and bar combine to create a 200m2 living area unlike anything else available in the alps. Facilities also include a separate sauna, hammam, jacuzzi, wellness area for treatments, relaxation area next to swimming pool and gym room. There is
Use of natural light From an aesthetical point of view the 34m2 indoor atrium is the green heart of the property, yet on a functional level it serves as a window to the sky, siphoning natural light into both of the floors it slices through. Above the ‘Espace Bar’ area is a ‘Verriere’ or glass ceiling which lets even more light flood in and provides views towards Val d’Isere and the surrounding mountains. Of course, looking west from this area back towards the atrium garden you are given a further sense of interior space and light above and beyond what actually exists. The entire property has been designed so that every habitable room has access

also private lift access from underground parking. iPads have also been installed in all rooms to control light and heating. To achieve the level of functionality he wanted, he chose an automation system normally used for industrial purposes, not residential – still user friendly though. Nicholas Leach, Partner at Athena Advisors comments: “We’ve noticed that these days when selling a luxury single dwelling in the Alps, whilst the resort and location are of course important, it is the person behind the build which carries the most kudos with high end buyers. Just like a Hallmark. “Hot tubs, après-ski bars and wellness facilities are now simple must-haves, it’s things like exterior under-floor heating, alternative sports facilities and behavioural lighting which are the new desires. “It’s not all simply about personal enjoyment and satisfaction, top end buyers understand that a more luxurious property will command a higher rental for bookings. The chalet rental market is extremely demanding and only a few properties in each resort can compete at this level. “The big resorts like Megève and Val d’Isere still retain their appeal, but neighbouring resorts which were previously less desirable are now becoming popular. Top end clients buying in locations like this are making a value play, property prices are cheaper which means they have more budget for tailoring their property. “Combloux in the Evasion Mont Blanc domain is at least 50% cheaper than Megève, yet its only 4km away and has direct access to the same ski domain. The resort is equally beautiful too.”

Glass & Glazing Sunsquare was recently tasked with transforming the levels of natural light in award-winning chef Régis Crépy’s home kitchen
A lighter lunch Natural light levels play a key role in the design of any property. Over time, greater and greater importance has been placed on increasing the levels of natural light flooding into building interiors.
N
atural daylight is an integral element of our everyday life; our brain functions and responses are determined by daylight levels. Therefore, it is vital for your wellbeing to provide a well-lit environment both at home
and at work. More than a decade ago, the Revised Building Regulations Approved Document L was published and recognised the need for buildings to provide adequate levels of natural daylight as part of their design. This

states that a minimum of 10% of a roof area and a minimum of 20% of a wall area should be composed of light transmitting elements. Skylights or rooflights can provide three times more light than an area of vertical glazing and perhaps more importantly, a more even distribution of light. This ability to fill a room with natural daylight makes skylights an ideal choice for both residential and commercial projects. Justin Seldis, Managing Director of Sunsquare, a leading designer and manufacturer of high-specification skylights, says that the larger proportion of the company’s customer base is for residential projects. However, as we begin to see economic upturn, there is a marked increase in using skylights and rooflights in commercial projects. Well-lit home interiors can have a positive impact on our daily activities and frame of mind. They can open up areas where we spend much of our time during the day; be it the office, kitchen, dining area or living room. A recent Sunsquare project saw the company tasked with transforming the levels of natural light in award-winning chef Régis Crépy’s home kitchen. The restaurateur has extended his home to create a vast kitchen and dining area where he and his family can enjoy spending time cooking, eating and socialising. The project brief was to create a closer relationship between his kitchen and garden area, improving the living space for his family

for the skylights. However, the two SkyView skylights we installed flood the room with daylight, transforming the light levels in the kitchen.” Glazing can bring natural light into many areas of the home; even the basement. Some of the UK’s most distinctive city architecture tends to be from the Victorian and Georgian eras when basements and cellars were part and parcel of most houses. However, they are no longer damp storage areas for everything we need to keep out of sight. Many people are now converting their underground rooms into habitable domains; even extending them beneath the back garden to create a larger subterranean space. The issue with these spaces has always been the low, or in some cases non-existent, levels of natural light. For many years, they could not be classed as true accommodation, especially not bedrooms, due to the fact there was only ever a small converted coal chute as natural lighting. The creation and design of structural walk-on products for the domestic market has been a game-changer for basement conversions. Suitable for internal and external use, walkon glazing allows natural light to flood into basement rooms, whilst being structurally sound to be walked on from above. Walk-on roof windows can therefore be used as part of a floor or external path, patio decking or just laid into grass to complement any basement conversion.
High-specification flat roof skylights not only provide much-needed levels of natural light to homes and commercial properties, but also offer thermal benefits. All Sunsquare skylight products are thermally broken, to ensure properties are not only brighter but also warmer and drier. Aluminium, which most skylights are manufactured from, transmits heat/cold very efficiently. If the external temperature manipulates the skylight frame, it not only creates a skylight that acts as a huge heat loss area for a property but also opens up the possibility of serious condensation issues. Justin adds: “Our walk-on roof windows are manufactured from our own extruded aluminium profile which is thermally broken with two polyamide insulating sections and then factory-glazed with our special walk-on specification insulating glass unit. “I am also extremely proud to say that Sunsquare are the first and only UK-based skylight manufacturer to be awarded the BSI Standard following rigorous testing of our products for air permeability, watertightness and wind resistance.” In both home and workplace environments the eye and brain functions respond better to natural light. Skylights, roof windows and walk-on roof lights all bring in more natural light than vertical windows, as well as adding a stylish design feature to any project.

and enhancing his multifunctional kitchen. Justin said: “The SkyView Skylight was selected from our product range for its ability to provide maximum light with the minimum of effort. We installed two 1000x1500mm skylights within an hour on the day of installation and it has immediately transformed the environment of the room. “This was one of our simpler projects but even the simplest jobs can yield magnificent results. In Régis’ case, he has said that the skylights have completely transformed the environment of the room. His home dining area is now much more appealing and enjoyable to spend time with family and friends and his cooking area is equally brighter and more welcoming.” To bring the outdoors indoors, Régis had already decided to install large concertina glass doors across the whole back wall of the kitchen. However, this restricted the amount of glazing which would be available for the skylights. Justin added: “The rule of thumb for domestic extensions is that it can be 25% glazed. To adhere to these building regulations this left only 3m2 available to use

Paints, Coatings & Finishes
Confronting harsh conditions The corrosiveness of an environment involves three major factors; the duration of wetness, the deposition rate of salts and the concentration of sulphur dioxide and other air-born chemicals. Powder coating protects the metal surface from the elements but it isn’t the only fortification against the threat of corrosion. Richard Besant, Sales and Marketing Director of Powdertech discusses how a successful outcome is achieved through a combination of best practice and informed powder choice.
S
o, when is an environment ‘harsh’? You need to determine the challenges your metal structure will face and International Standard ISO 9223/9224, Corrosion of metals and alloys: Corrosivity of atmospheres, helpfully identifies six environmental classifications. See Table 1. Thankfully, most UK cities fall within a C3 classification, and this is not considered ‘harsh’. It is the C4 and C5 environments that up the ante. A C4/5 marine environment classification occurs within 1000m from the high tide line where the air is constantly moist and carries salts and other particles.
Wind direction, composition of shoreline, elevation of the building, and proximity to other buildings are all important. In a C4/5 industrial environment the most important contaminant is sulphur dioxide which easily dissolves in water to form acid rain. Concentrations of SO2 have reduced significantly over the past 50 years but other pollutants, particularly nitrogen oxides, have contributed to the corrosive threat.
Defensive tactics Your stand against corrosion starts with design, well before any coating is applied. It is unrealistic to expect paints and coatings to deal with problems that are inherent in the

design of the fabrication. Design elements are often obvious but frequently overlooked. They include: • Eliminate water traps and allow for run-off • Avoid overlapping joints, or materials such as felt or in contact with the metal, as these induce capillary action which pulls water underneath the upper sheet of metal • Provide adequate ventilation for all areas to minimise condensation • Provide easy access for cleaning and maintenance The international standards for painting and coating metals cover best practice. See ISO13438 & 15773 for galvanised steel, ISO 12206 for aluminium and ISO12944 part 3 Design Considerations for Steel (also appropriate for aluminium). Cleaning the metal surface and pretreatment are the next lines of defence. At Powdertech we have a 9-stage pre-treatment process for aluminium and a 5-stage process for galvanized steel. The metal is submerged in tanks containing cleaners to remove grease and oils, surface etching agents plus a chrome phosphate conversion coating to seal the surface and form a corrosion resistant finish before powder coating.

Paints, Coatings & Finishes epoxy and so on, will confer different properties as will the curing agents, pigments and flow modifiers added to the mix. The resultant powders fall into two main categories – thermosets and thermoplastics with differences in their chemical properties. All of the high quality powders are tested for resistance to salt spray, light, humidity and a range of chemicals, including SO2 and acetic acid salt spray during their formulation.

be considered – possibly fluoropolymer coatings, or the ‘super durables’ containing a special polyester resin. Thermoplastics are particularly suitable for exacting conditions. They adhere closely to the underlying metal, forming a tough durable coating, 200 microns thick, with long term corrosion protection. Swimming pool environments are classed as C4 with high humidity, condensation and presence of cleaning chemicals. The properties of thermoplastic coatings, especially their ability to withstand immersion in water, enable them to withstand these conditions very successfully.
Most high quality thermoset powders retain their integrity within a temperature range of -30 degrees to +80 degrees. Thermoplastic powders withstand temperatures down to -70c without cracking making them ideal for pipes and installations underground and over ground in the coldest climates. Contrary to some opinion, UV light does not cause a threat to metal coatings in the UK. Powders classified by Qualicoat as Class 2 (with a modified UV resistant resin) are not necessary above latitude 65 degrees north. Class 1 provides sufficient protection and there is emerging evidence that they are achieving in excess of forty years durability. With the coated metal in situ we come back to the importance of the building design which should have ensured access to all areas for maintenance. All metal finishing systems need to be cleaned and checked regularly and whilst powder coatings are low maintenance, this certainly isn’t no maintenance. In a harsh environment, a rinse with water and a mild detergent every three months is recommended. Standing up to harsh environments clearly requires a battle plan - so remember your 7 P’s – Proper Practice & Planning Prevents Painfully Poor Performance – or similar! Intelligent design, careful surface preparation, rigorous pre-treatment, the right powder for the job and attention to maintenance – it is the combination that is key; no one factor on its own will do the job.
■
A close relationship between your powder coater and his powder manufacturers is essential. Powder manufacturers know from experience which powder formulations give the best performance in different C4 and C5 environments. They have maps indicating varying coastal conditions, for example, and from previous jobs they will know which powders were the most successful. In C4/C5 marine and industrial environments, Powdertech will often use a primer coat between the galvanizing zinc layer and the high performance top coat. Recent generations of epoxy-based primers are actually waterproof. Traditional primers are zinc rich, to increase the zinc protection but waterproofing is far more beneficial in challenging conditions. A primer coat will be between 70 and 80 microns thick and the top coat will add another 70-80 microns. This combined layer of around 150 microns offers excellent protection. Where the environment is particularly harsh, enhanced thermoset powders may

Renewable Energy
A warm welcome An award-winning holiday retreat on the Scottish Borders is seeing the financial and carbon saving benefits of biomass, thanks to a district heating system from Euroheat, and the commercial Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
T
he award-winning Eildon Holiday Cottages, based in Melrose on the Scottish borders, is a converted 18th century farm house, with six newly-built self-catering cottages. Situated in a fold of the Eildon Hills above the attractive small Border town of Melrose, there are magnificent views from the cottages over the Scottish countryside. Prior to the biomass system being installed, the farm and holiday cottages were heated by two oil boilers; one to heat the farm house and one to heat all six cottages. Simon Holden, co-founder of Euroheat, explained: “Apart from the carbon saving benefits of switching to biomass, what’s really attractive is its money saving credentials. At Eildon, 20 tonnes of pellets a year are required to fuel the system, at a cost of £3600; less than half the cost of Kerosene. The savings don’t end there; thanks to the Renewable Heat Incentive, Eildon receives an annual payment of £7367, more than covering the pellets. When combined with money saved on the previous fuel, biomass delivers a return of £11,067.” The biomass heating system, installed by GreenHeat Renewables, consists of a single, 65kW HDG Compact pellet boiler and accumulator. The HDG Compact is designed to burn pellets or wood chips, with optimised combustion technology, which results in high efficiency and low fuel consumption.
36
An advanced thermostat controls the boiler temperature, ensuring only the required amount of heat is produced. Pellets are transported to the combustion chamber and automatically ignited, with selfactivated cleaning and a large ash container, meaning minimal input from end users. Pellets were chosen due to the limited space available to install the hopper and restricted access for delivery. They are more expensive compared with logs or chip but offer additional benefits to end-users; such as taking up less space, a key requirement at

Eildon, and creating less waste. Helping to ensure their low carbon credentials, pellets are now easily available from British-based manufacturers throughout the country. The fuel is delivered to the boiler using a PSZ direct solid steel auger, which runs along the bottom of the purpose built wood pellet hopper, drawing pellets into the boiler’s burn chamber. The hopper is fed through a STORZ wood pellet delivery system – a delivery truck blows pellets into the hopper and extracts the dust at the same time. The hopper takes eight tonnes, reducing delivery costs, whilst maintaining the integrity of the wood pellet fuel. The boiler and hopper are built into an existing outhouse. Internal pipework transfers the heated water to all six holiday cottages and an underground REHAU Rauthermex pre-insulated pipe then transfers heat to a heat exchanger in the main farm house. This separates the farm house from the holiday cottages hydraulically, so, if maintenance work on the distribution system is required on one building, it does not affect the heating in the others. Each individual property has its own standard central heating controls. As you can see from Eildon, the RHI really does present an attractive financial proposition, particularly for those switching from oil who will see the greatest fuel savings. If you’re looking to get your customers interested in renewables and the RHI, then understanding how the scheme stacks up is essential for winning work.Your customers will be more likely to choose your services if you a) explain the RHI benefits in the first place and then b) help them apply – either yourself or by using a biomass installer that will help.

Ecobuild Show Guide Unlike many timber floating staircases that use stainless steel fixings for the balustrade, this Jersey home hosts unique solid American Walnut box treads, which were specially manufactured slightly longer than usually necessary. CANAL used this extra length to design an end piece to secure the glass balustrade in place. To the keen eye, you will notice that the grain of the timber flows through the glass balustrade producing clean lines and a high quality finish. CANAL produced the cantilever staircase metalwork at its manufacturing site in Nottingham, UK; the secret to the staircase’s success. On site in Jersey, the first fix involved mechanically fixing a structural steel stringer to the wall with protruding, welded cantilever channels. The stringer was then completely hidden by the wall finish and prepped for decor. Throughout the project the steel cantilever channels provided access to the next floor to complete the remaining structural metalwork process.

wood decking. The great thing about an engineered product such as Dura Deck means that highly developed additional ingredients can be added at point of manufacture to stabilise the decking and protect it from various threats including moisture, mould and UV.

omposites still represent less than 10% of the overall decking market but demand is growing at a rapid rate as end users and contractors realise the benefits of choosing composite decking products. This is thanks to two factors – enhanced product quality and an emerging willingness from key timber distributors to offer it alongside timber alternatives. To demonstrate, Dura Composites struck a distribution deal with national

timber importer and merchant Arnold Laver and its Dura Deck is proving popular at all of Arnold depots nationally where its products have been socked since April 2012. Dura Deck is a timber composite decking solution. It features a high percentage of reclaimed hard wood which gives it such a natural look but it’s high density polyethylene content and other inhibitors and stabilisers means that it doesn’t suffer any of the pitfalls of natural

Dura Deck retains around 90% of its original colour after a massive 5000 hours exposure
This means that, unlike natural wood, it won’t crack, shrink, warp or rot. It is also highly resistant to light degradation thanks to UV inhibitors added during manufacturing, which ensure Dura Deck retains around 90% of its original colour after a massive 5000 hours exposure, and then remains colour and structurally stable throughout its entire life cycle. Many don’t realise that products such as Dura Deck are just as ‘green’ as traditional wood. In fact, it is made of 87% recycled materials and can also be recycled after use. In addition, Dura achieved a world first earlier this year when we became the first timber composite supplier to become FSC 100% certified, guaranteeing the use of FSC certified forests in our production chain when this option is ordered. The biggest advantage of Dura Deck has to be the incredible cost-savings that it can bring. Dura Deck comes with a warranty of up to 25 years, 10 years longer than the average life of hardwood decking and more than 15 years longer than the life of softwood decking. When looking at initial outlay, Dura Deck is slightly more expensive than traditional wood decking but it is often cheaper to use because it lasts so much longer and doesn’t require any painting or staining. In fact, an independent report that compared whole life cycle costs over a 25 year period confirmed that a square metre of Dura Deck is £136.14 cheaper than softwood and £381.18 cheaper than hardwood. Specially designed subsurface fixings make the deck quick and easy to install, not to mention barefoot friendly. A deck installer can lay the deck very quickly and thanks to the 6mm spacer clips will deliver consistent gapping much more easily than natural wood planks. These characteristics mean that Dura Deck is suitable to be specified on large or small projects, be they commercial or residential, and is why the customer base ranges from the largest contractors to private individuals.

Flooring & Acoustics
Groundbreaking acoustic barrier with Skyfold Skyfold, the unique, vertical-rising partitioning system available in the UK from Style, has set an incredible new industry standard in soundproofing with the launch of its 59dB Rw, fully automatic acoustic moveable wall. This easy-to-operate partitioning system already stands in a class of its own, descending silently into place at the push of a button and occupying zero floor space when not required by being discreetly housed in the ceiling cavity. With the launch of an unrivalled 59dB Rw model, Skyfold has set the bar even higher. “An automatic, moveable wall with this level of soundproofing certainly sets a new precedent,” confirms Efrem Brynin, Style’s Skyfold Product Director. “We have been the exclusive UK partner to Skyfold for 10
years now and during that time the product has continually evolved to exceed market expectations. “But this new development is a very significant leap forward in acoustic technology and makes Skyfold the product that many architects, specifiers, contractors and end-users, have long been waiting for.” Available in both the existing Classic range and a brand new Zenith range, Skyfold offers extensive benefits when sub-dividing space. Skyfold is unrivalled in that it does not impact on the interior ambiance of a room
when not in use as it requires no floor or wall tracks and neatly retracts, completely out of sight, into the ceiling. In fact, due to an almost limitless range of finishes, that include wood veneers, fabrics and even screen printed images, Skyfold offers enormous potential to create a visual focus when lowered into place.

Health and safety measures increasingly puts pressure on companies within the construction industry to improve safety standards for their employees. There is a particular concern when flooring contractors have to lift and move heavy bags of levelling compounds and screeds. As a response to these health and safety concerns Uzin has reduced the weight of its most popular levelling compounds. UZIN NC 150, UZIN NC 160, UZIN NC 170 and UZIN NC 172 are now available in 20kg bags to make the transportation of levelling compounds easier. Despite reducing the weight of the bag, each of the levelling compounds offers fantastic coverage! *

Sapa door is first to be awarded top energy rating Sapa Building Systems’ Crown 98mm aluminium sliding door is the very first door on the market to be awarded an A+ Door Set Energy Rating (DSER) by the British Fenestration Ratings Council (BFRC). The global aluminium systems company launched the door in 2012 when it was the first in its class to be awarded an ‘A’ DSER. At this time, it had already been tested and reached a positive energy balance of 10 or more, which is the requirement for the new A+ rating. The top rating is achieved through the door’s slim sight lines, which increase the glazed area allowing maximum light into the building. *

Floods, grease balls, manhole overflows and choked sewer drains all pose a risk to public health. So what are the causes? The lack of will? The lack of knowledge? Who is to blame when there are laws, regulations, experts/local authorities and building control (part H Building Regulations)? Water Companies and Water Utilities employ The Water Industry Act (BS EN 1825-2;2002 & 1:2004 EN 124:1994 & EN 124:1994, EN1253-4) but do not seem to have the will to implement these regulations. The viable alternative to compact laminate FINSA’s mission is to produce solutions in wood and arguably the high-tech COMPACMEL product is one of its best examples. All FINSA developments are aimed at providing products that offer users both additional application scope and excellent performance. COMPACMEL is an extremely cost effective alternative to solid laminate used in so many public usage and contract situations. FINSA UK Managing Director Rafael Willisch explains: “At the top end of the application scale for solid grade laminate, probably around 30%, there is no alternative (like specification that calls for specific chemical resistance), but for the remaining approximately 70% COMPACMEL is a fully viable alternative in all respects at between 35% and 40% less cost. This translates into significant savings on any project and will
often be the crucial difference in winning a tender.” COMPACMEL presents excellent performance characteristics: it has a high density (more than 1000kg/m³) as well as tensile strength, bending strength, elasticity and high impact resistance. It is well suited to environments of persistent high humidity. COMPACMEL comes in thicknesses of between 8-19mm and a variety of colour tones and patterns. COMPACMEL can also be covered with different surfacing and edging materials. It machines as easily
as other wood-based composites and has another advantage in that it is not nearly as abrasive as solid grade laminate so extends the tool life on fabricating machines. In the UK, FINSA distributes all board products nationally from its main base at Birkenhead on Merseyside and through selected appointed distributors.

Titan Products expands wireless range Titan Products continues to develop the TPZ-Net range of wireless sensors with the release of the TPZ-PIR occupancy sensor. Designed to detect movement in a space the completely wireless, battery powered sensor transmits a wireless signal to the TPZ-Net co-ordinator when movement is detected. The coordinator then communicates this state over a BACnet network which allows applications such as lighting and HVAC equipment to be controlled when occupants enter the room. This control on demand is essential when aiming to reduce energy consumption. The TPZ-Net range is supplied with Titan Products’ bespoke PC interface to allow for quick and simple setup and commissioning. *

Hauraton installed for duo store convenience The Waitrose supermarket and John Lewis at home store is situated to the South East of Ipswich on the Futura Park development. Opened in November 2012, the supermarket and store are next to each other enabling customers to benefit from convenient access to the vast range of products sold at both premises. A 340 space car park is available to customers at front of the complex. The asphalted area and paved pedestrian routs
are drained by over 383m of Hauraton RECYFIX PLUS 200 surface water drainage channels having Class D400 ductile iron
HEELSAFE gratings. A further 43m of FASERFIX KS 150 channels supplied with Class E600 ductile iron HEELSAFE gratings were also installed in the service areas. The channels were ordered through Collier and Catchpole, the leading builders’ merchants in Colchester. The drainage contractor was Mullen and Kelly. The RECYFIX PLUS channels are made from 100% recycled polyethylenepolypropylene (PE-PP) and are factory fitted with their ductile iron gratings. Each 1m length weighs less than 14kg, so was easily handled into position. The heavier 1m FASERFIX KS channels are made from the company’s tough fibre reinforced concrete. Even before the final surface had been laid and despite being trafficked by site vehicles, there were no reported channel breakages during installation of either type of channel. To further reduce installation times, endof-run caps and pipe connection sockets were also supplied with other connection points moulded into the sides and bottom of each channel.

T-T launches new pump system literature
Playground menace School children across the UK play in the shadow of impending danger as hurricane force winds rip insecure school roof structures apart and scatter debris across the playground at up to 80 miles per hour. Of particular interest to UK manufacturer Guttermaster was the continued safe performance of its parapet roof wall capping system, Snaplock. At the leading UK test institution, CERAM, the Snaplok system was exposed to ripping forces equivalent to over 200 miles per hour. “We’re proud to have been the first wall capping supplier to take this threat to our children’s safety seriously. Our products are now officially among the safest around,” reports Guttermaster Managing Director, Mike McKee. ( *

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation
New Sureclad brochure reveals latest developments Shackerley’s new cladding brochure reveals a massively extended Sureclad Ceramic Granite Collection to meet every possible aesthetic requirement, followed by an impressive gallery of Sureclad ceramic granite ventilated facade projects to inspire the specifier. This 6th edition features numerous cladding projects across the UK and the ROI, some of which are the result of a rapidly expanding strategic partnership with Kingspan, where Shackerley’s ceramic granite has been installed as a premium quality facade with the BENCHMARK Karrier Engineered insulated panel system. Whilst the Sureclad name has always been synonymous with hardwearing, longlasting ceramic granite, the 6th edition of the 124-page catalogue introduces a range of additional facade materials that can also be installed in conjunction
with the Sureclad System, including a comprehensive range of attractive large format engineered stone options. These materials are all prefabricated in the same way as Shackerley’s ceramic granite panels using highly specialised machinery at the company’s ISO 9001 certified production facilities in Lancashire. The Sureclad System meets all relevant British and European standards, CWCT standards for systemised building envelopes and NHBC technical requirements. As the technical section of the new publication reveals, Sureclad has also proved suitable
for installation in areas prone to earthquakes, hurricanes and other climatic extremes having successfully completed a series of punishing architectural and engineering assessments in Philadelphia. As a result, the UK’s market leading ceramic granite ventilated facade system is now also being promoted across the US and Canada by porcelain manufacturing giant Crossville. 8 *

Celotex drives for change with Insulating Britain campaign Diffused daylighting at the National Football Centre One of the world’s largest sporting facilities to use Kalwall with aerogel insulation technology is St George’s Park, the FA’s National Football Centre and training ground in Burton-on-Trent. Of particular interest is the full-size indoor football pitch and separate sports hall both of which are side lit by natural light using Kalwall. The cladding admits museum-quality daylighting, flooding the interior with natural diffused daylight while eliminating glare and shadows to create perfect playing conditions. The architects have also maximised the highest levels of insulation and energy efficiency, whilst still maximising daylight, by incorporating an aerogel within 950m2 of the 2780m2 of Kalwall used on the site. Carea serves up a striking cladding system 150m2 of Carea cladding has helped to provide the finishing touches to the new Ibex House – a 19 apartment complex located just yards from Wimbledon Park tube station. With the building’s aesthetics of vital importance and the exterior designed to complement the adjacent buildings, the costeffective Carea Aquila cladding system proved ideal to complete the facade. Installed by specialist contractor KTD Facades, the red-brown of the Terra colour Aquila cladding provided an attractive external facade to the three floors of apartments, whilst the lighter, subtle Sepia coloured cladding panels created the perfect finish for the building’s top floor balconies.

VIVIX exterior facade panels were installed at the new control tower for Kristiansand Airport, in Kjevik, Norway. To clad the control tower, Archus Architects and Wiig og Horgmo Architects chose VIVIX panels in Storm, a deep charcoal grey. “VIVIX panels are the ideal solution for this project. The panels are easily machined and can be cut into a variety of shapes and sizes. The control towers are at least 30m above ground; the material we used for cladding had to be lightweight for ease of installation and safety as well as versatile and flexible to allow us to realise the design concept,” comments Roald Bakke of Wiig og Horgmo. *

Aperam stainless steel in £5m church transformation The £5m restoration of St Barnabas Church Erdington includes a sweeping stainless steel roof, which has been created combining Aperam UGINOX Patina K44 and UGINOX Top stainless steel. The Grade II listed building had been the subject of an arson attack in 2007 and Brownhill Hayward Brown’s redesign utilised a standing seam system across the entire roof span to ‘fuse’ the modern extension and restored Victorian structure. English Heritage has endorsed the matt grey appearance that UGINOX provides as an acceptable alternative to lead as the system patinates naturally to provide the traditional aesthetic of aged lead sheet. * kevin.jones@aperam.com

Schöck Isokorb for major Passivhaus residential scheme The Chester Balmore project, near Highgate, North London, part of Camden Council’s community investment programme, claimed to be the UK’s largest residential scheme so far to meet the Passivhaus standard. Rick Mather Architects developed the project, which will deliver 53 new homes, in three elegant brick-clad blocks, housing a collection of studios and one to three bedroom flats. A Passivhaus standard property must show high levels of insulation with good use of solar and internal heat gains, excellent air tightness and minimal thermal bridges.
Thermal bridges being a frequent cause of increased heat and energy loss, damp walls and mould formation. One of the most technically advanced
countermeasures is the Schöck Isokorb range. It not only thermally separates components, but acts in a structural design capacity as well. The Isokorb incorporated is the latest generation for concrete-toconcrete applications – the type XT – for which the Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt has awarded the “low thermal bridge construction” certificate and confirmed its suitability for Passivhaus construction. A major reason for the superior performance of the type XT is the thickness of the insulation body. Increased from the standard 80mm thick to 120mm, providing an even more efficient solution. Tim Paul from Rick Mather comments: “Balconies offer practical and aesthetic advantages for residents, but they have not always been a popular choice in the context of high efficiency Passivhaus design. However, the advanced technology and superior performance of the Schöck Isokorb XT range offers such a high level of insulation, that we had no problem in incorporating balcony design into the Chester Balmore project.”

Industry first for Brick Development Association Following a Life Cycle Assessment carried out by the BRE for Sustainable Products, the Brick Development Association’s (BDA) generic brick has been awarded an Environmental Product Declaration. The generic brick is the first construction industry product to be verified under BRE Global’s recently launched EN15804 Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) scheme. The EPD was presented to Alan Baxter, the Chairman of the BDA who commented: ‘“With origins that date back to 7000BC, the generic brick has demonstrated its continued relevance in this era of sustainable construction. We’ve always known that our material had great green credentials now we have the independent evidence that proves it.” An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a Life Cycle Assessment based tool
Bank is fully protected by Remmers The facade of a Grade 1 listed, four storey high building in London required extensive stone and concrete restoration. Concrete & Corrosion Consultancy Practice was appointed as technical project managers for the refurbishment works. Remmers protective coating systems were chosen to meet the highly demanding specification and multiple facade finishes including Limestone. Repairs were carried out using Betofix R2, a high build, fast curing concrete repair mortar. Remmers Restoration Mortar was also selected for its ideal restoration and reprofiling properties for masonry as well as ornamental building elements. Finally, Remmers Elastoflex Facade Paint was applied for its excellent anticarbonation characteristics, resistance to weathering and crack bridging ability. ( *

All EPD must be third-party verified. The BDA’s EPD has been prepared using a set of product category rules designed specifically for all construction products. David Richardson, Director of the BRE Centre for Sustainable Products who presented the EPD said: “It is great that one of the first building materials ever produced is also the first product to be successfully verified under our EPD scheme.Well done to the BDA.”
BRE Global is internationally recognised for its expertise in the field of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Having worked closely with industry to develop the Green Guide and Environmental Profiles Certification Scheme, it consulted with fellow internationally recognised LCA experts in developing a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment methodology for construction products in line with the European standard EN 15804:2012.

Weholite secures contract for bespoke system Asset International, a leading manufacturer of Weholite sustainable drainage and water management products, has been elected to provide a bespoke pipeline system to the £220m upgrade at the UK’s second largest sewerage treatment works. Water company, Thames Water, in consultation with Laing O’Rourke and Imtech Process Ltd joint venture – Tamesis, has chosen Weholite, the high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe, to help reduce pollution and overflow as part of a sewer improvement at Crossness Sewage Treatment Works in south east London. More than 4000m of Weholite HDPE pipe is to be used in the project, with variations in diameters ranging from 700mm up to 2600mm internal diameter. The upgraded pipeline system is designed to reduce the number of overflows and their environmental impact from the sewers and
treatment systems serving London, and in particular to limit pollution from the sewers and treatment systems connected to Beckton and Crossness sewage treatment works. Vasilios Samara, Product Manager at Asset, added: “We have worked successfully with Thames Water on many projects with this being the largest of its kind, so it was great that Weholite was the chosen solution. All fabrications are bespoke in design and made in accordance with the needs of the scheme.” The project will see its treatment capacity rise by 44%, significantly reducing the
amount of storm sewage that overflows into the River Thames during heavy rainfall, as a result of the upgrade. The largest quantity of Wehoilte pipe was one mile of 2100mm internal diameter pipe which was used for the main transfer line. There was also more than 300m of 2200mm internal diameter pipes used for the pipelines between the distribution chambers of the treatment plant.

New partnership to stock Ruukki HIARC sheets
Fike fire detection delivers significant cost savings Fike Safety Technology, a UK manufacturer of intelligent fire detection solutions, has supplied its popular Quadnet analogue addressable system for a large residential building complex in India. The Wembley Estate has eight tower blocks with 13 floors in each. The installation consisted of five conventional manual call points on each floor being wired to an input module in an addressable detector. A single 4-loop Quadnet panel communicated with all 575 addressable detectors in all eight towers. No additional sounders were required to be installed, as the built-in sounders in the detectors were used where required. (

Timeguard floods the LED market Timeguard’s lead in LED for outdoor lighting seems unassailable with the introduction of a range of wide-beam floodlight designs that produce even diffused light, virtually indistinguishable from old-style and energy-guzzling halogen lamps. This overcomes installers’ reluctance to switch to LEDs for floodlighting, because Timeguard has eliminated the disadvantages of other so-called LED floodlights which emit only the focussed beam of light that is the signature of light emitting diodes. These new Timeguard lights join the NIGHTeye range which, as well as quality, unashamedly trades on its looks, the result of many months of development by Timeguard’s London-based design team. *

Flood prevention and planning action The Government has announced yet more delays in implementing sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for new projects, aimed at reducing further flooding, through the 2010 Flood and Water Management Act. However, SuDS experts have pointed out that impermeable surfaces on existing properties are contributing to downstream flooding now. Planning measures are already in place to help address the problem but local planning authorities need to prioritise enforcement. All the permitted development regulations refer to a guide on permeable paving from the Department of Communities and Local Government and this, in turn, refers to Interpave’s website and its guidance document: ‘Paving for Rain: responsible rainwater management around the home – guidance for householders’. *
