Magazine October 2016
Welcome
to Future Constructor & Architect...
T
hanks to advancements in technology and material performance, architects are now faced with an increasing amount of options when it comes to deciding upon a structure’s composition. For buildings to stand out amongst their peers and appeal to the client’s target audience, designers must push the boundaries, both in form and in function. You only have to look at Zaha Hadid’s project portfolio to see that the industry is not as ‘straight-edge’ as it once was. Austin-Smith:Lord’s new Teaching and Conference Building at Teeside University – known as The Curve – is a perfect example of this. Its bold and striking composition is enhanced by the golden copper cladding that wraps around the curved wall surfaces of the four-storey building. The golden copper alloy also brings an additional warmth and texture – a material that will maintain its high-quality appearance with negligible maintenance. To read more about this landmark building in education, turn to page 28. Continuing the curved theme, in this month’s Sustainability in Development, FC&A unveils the Francis Crick Institute – a stunning piece of architecture, thanks to the curved steel elements made possible using Barnshaws Section Benders.Turn to page 14 to find out more. Meanwhile on page 32, Schoeck explains how its thermal break system provided the ultimate solution for a London scheme featuring two rippling glass towers. Elsewhere in this issue, Aco Water Management’s Dr David Smoker examines how Brexit is set to impact on product standards in the construction sector, Sutton Vane Associates looks at some of the benefits gained from a well-considered lighting scheme and Graf UK profiles the first UK eco town to harvest the rain. Architect in Profile After graduating from Newcastle University, Tim Bailey joined Browne Smith Baker in Newcastle, qualified, became an Associate, a Partner and then Managing Partner before leaving in 2000 to set up his own firm, xsite architecture. Tim has increasingly become involved with RIBA, regionally and nationally, and recently joined the Board of RIBA Enterprises in Newcastle upon Tyne. What do you think is the greatest challenge for designing in sustainability? Knowledge and innovation. Developers and funders alike are suspicious of both and it is the way buildings are funded, more than planning or public tastes, that holds back real advances in the way we build. This is particularly true for houses where, in general, we are building more slowly than we need and building housing stock that will tire at a much faster rate than any identifiable period of housing before it.
The project that has attracted most attention in xsite architecture’s portfolio is the Toffee Factory, Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne

What is your greatest influence and source of inspiration? I have always found ordinary people the best source of inspiration. Being involved with something that has real purpose and will create the possibility of change for people is all the motivation I have needed. Influences come from many directions, but I was told many moons ago that “keeping the money moving” and “acting to make a difference”, would contribute more than would ever likely to be recognised. I like that and try to follow it. What has been your most notable project to date? Easily, the project that has attracted most attention, press and awards is the Toffee Factory, Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne. It has the perfect appealing characteristics of a
rescued building (after fire), in a challenging but stunning location – a contemporary treatment to create a workspace that people have found inspirational. Job done! How do you approach your projects? Absorb every detail of information available first. Context, constraint, brief, economy and, of course, location and budget. Let that stew around for a few days (if they are available!) before sitting in front of the blank page. It is usual that some of the sifting and prioritising of information has happened and helps with the early concept and site approaches. We also value precedent study, research into the building type and consultation with a wide constituency of stakeholders whenever that is possible.

What is your favourite building and why? I have a few, but if I have to pick one it has to be the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, built in 1935 to a competitionwinning design by architects Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff. At the opening, the benefactor and Mayor, 9th Earl De La Warr, set out the vision as “a modernist building of world renown that will become a crucible for creating a new model of cultural provision in an English seaside town which is going to lead to the growth, prosperity and the greater culture of our town”. Fabulous and enduring, every seaside should have one. What can we expect from xsite over the next few years? xsite always wants to follow the exciting projects! Over the next few years this will see us working across the UK and maybe even Europe.

The premium combination of sophistication, performance and proven reliability that sets Corian apart from the crowd comes beautifully into play in this project. What’s more, the material’s cuttingedge compatibility with the latest technology offers added benefits for user-friendly surface installations, especially those that can expect high levels of public engagement. Further applications that maximise the easy adaptability of Corian and its pleasing, hygienic tactility include the surrounds for the ATM units that are set into the Express Banking element. The in-house architects for the project were Miguel Pérez Tallón and Rubén Sesmero Blanco. They explain:“Corian was chosen after a long research process into many different kinds of materials, and particularly because it was the best material for achieving the seamless appearance we were looking for. In addition, Corian allows us to match the curved shapes proposed in the design without incurring a more challenging manufacturing process. We are really pleased with the final result as we have been able to achieve a really smart and professional look that will enhance interaction with our clients.” Naturally, the design of the space aims also for optimum energy-efficiency. Features such as underfloor heating and the apertures within the separation ‘planes’ of the various zones, which have been added to enhance ventilation, mean that no additional HVAC

Durable and renewable Thanks to its inherent stain resistance, Corian lasts a long time. It can easily be repaired and renewed, thus minimising the desire or need to replace and dispose of it. However, should you want to redesign, Corian can be removed, re-cut and either reinstalled or reworked into new products.
Sustainability, technically speaking Corian solid surfaces – the whole range or specific types – have received important independent certification for their environmental performance (such as GreenGuard, NAHB North American Builders Association, Scientific Certification Systems). Their hygienic performance has also been certified by prestigious independent institutions (for example, by NSF International,The Royal Institute of Public Health and LGA QualiTest). Corian is NSF/ANSI Standard 51 Certified for food contact, the highest level, for all food types in commercial food preparation.

The Francis Crick Institute has been described as a symbol of ‘scientific Britain’, and will strive to translate its findings to treatments that can benefit patients for years to come
Signature structures The latest £650m jewel in Britain’s scientific crown, the Francis Crick Institute has opened in the Camden Borough of London, with some of the country’s most esteemed researchers and scientists now taking up residence under its vaulted roof. The institute will aim to tackle disease and illness concerns of the 21st century, by researching the mechanics of how illness develops and pushing resulting discoveries to enhance treatments for patients.

ited as the largest biomedical research facility in Europe, the new structure has already been widely lauded as the new symbol of ‘scientific Britain’.The institute proudly carries the name of the co-discoverer of DNA’s molecular structure and the joint 1962 Nobel Prize winner, Molecular Biologist Francis Crick. Funding for the project was provided by the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK,Wellcome, UCL, Imperial College London and King’s College London – with the new structure replacing a range of aging lab facilities scattered around the local area. The building itself was designed to offer the scope and adaptability to incorporate new scientific opportunities of the future, which required utilising innovative construction techniques to ensure the Institute reflected this forward-thinking approach, while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding area.

One of the most distinctive features of the structure are its curved steel elements, which offer a futuristic aesthetic and define particularly its vast roof structure. Curved structural steel has seen wide use in a number of high profile construction projects over the last few decades. It has enabled designers and architects to introduce new and innovative designs that are more organic and aesthetically unique. So when steelwork contractor Severfield required curved structural steel for the project in 2013, they contacted Europe’s largest metal bending company, Barnshaws Section Benders. Greg North, Commercial Director at Barnshaws, remembers the project well: “We were initially contacted by Severfield to supply a range of specified Rectangular Hollow Sections, Universal Beams, Universal Columns and flat sections, which amounted to around 300 tons of steelwork. The scale of the project was particularly large, but

– which house some of the largest capacity bending machines in the world, allowing the company to deliver precision curved sections up to 35m in length. Such expertise has seen Barnshaws involved in the construction of Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, Wimbledon’s Centre Court and a number of London’s 2012 Olympic facilities. The vaulted roof structure of the facility was the destination for the majority of Barnshaws’ steelwork, which embodies the innovative design and construction approach of the entire project. The roof also pays homage to the architecture of the adjacent St. Pancras train station, offering a blend of modernity and consistency within its city surroundings. The roof is arranged in two sections, which serve to conceal the substantial heating and cooling units for the building, while also incorporating one of Britain’s largest in-built solar panel arrays to further reduce the structure’s carbon
footprint. The two sections overlap above the atrium, conveying a strong architectural statement to all visitors. Aside from the aesthetic benefits, curved steel also allows greater load bearing capabilities than an equivalent-sized straight section, since the curved section can deflect load more efficiently across its span. This enables contractors to specify smaller sections for the same application, reducing the weight and overall cost of a project. Greg North continues:“Curved steel allows architects further flexibility in design, and can offer significant weight savings in a structure while still offering ample load bearing capabilities. Curved steel is allowing modern buildings to reflect the progress of our times, offering a shift away from the boxy designs typical of the 1970s and 80s.This benefits the immediate area around the building, and in the case of the Francis Crick Institute, makes

our experience and large bending capacity meant we could complete the work entirely in-house. Many of our engineers have been curving metals for decades for everything from bridges to bus shelters, so we were able to cater for the wide range of sections and beams required by the contractor, all to the exacting quality standards.” Barnshaws Section Benders was established in 1969 and has been providing precision curved metal solutions to the construction, power generation, mining and manufacturing sectors ever since. The company operates facilities in the West Midlands, Manchester, Hamilton and Poland

a bold statement regarding the forwardthinking approach of the facility, its users and local society. Local communities can be truly engaged by new developments if they offer an aesthetic and cultural benefit, and curved structural steel helps enable this.” The Francis Crick Institute was conceived as a publicly accessible, transparent space, making a break from the traditional isolation of conventional laboratories. Scientists, residents and community groups were consulted throughout the project to ensure that the building was aspiring to the goals of the Institute and could help inspire future scientists and the community for years to come. The building is designed as four separate blocks or ‘neighbourhoods’ gathered around a central atrium, incorporating a total of 12 floors, including those below ground. These underground levels are specifically designed to minimise the effects of vibration and static electricity on the precise instruments which will be housed within, allowing scientists to gain the most accurate test results possible. Total floor space for the structure amounts to over 17 football pitches, which includes labs, teaching facilities, offices and public spaces. Once the transfer from other facilities is completed, the Institute will house 1500 staff, which will include 1250 research scientists. The Institute will operate under a budget of £100m a year, which will be used to help treat cancer, heart disease, brain disorders and a further range of debilitating conditions. Greg North expands on the importance of curved structural steel for the future of British construction: “Construction must

move with the times, to allow better spaces for ourselves and future generations. We are delighted to have curved steel incorporated in signature structures such as the Francis Crick Institute, especially when the structure is utilised for such a vital purpose. By incorporating new techniques regarding structural steel, the design of any structure can be revolutionised in a truly cost effective manner. Curved structural steel means we can give architects the freedom of expression to change our world, rather than confining them in the limitations of conformity.” In the aftermath of a split from Europe and the following uncertainty, it is vital that Britain retains its relevance in the high precision and skill industries it has traditionally excelled in. Scientific research is one of these key areas where British expertise is highly valued, and by investing in state-of-the-art facilities such as the Francis Crick Institute, this expertise will only grow. By coupling innovative structural designs enabled by the work of structural fabrication experts with high quality services, Britain can retain its worldwide relevance and progression as a domestic economy that can attract investment from around the globe. Curved steel sections are a small part of protecting and progressing with the philosophy of a modern Britain, where, in this case at least, the pinnacle of scientific expertise is conjoined with world class facilities to achieve the discoveries of tomorrow, today.

Voice of the Industry
Brexit – lowering or raising the standard? Dr David Smoker, Business Development Director at ACO Water Management, examines how Brexit is set to impact on product standards in the construction sector.

David Smoker is Business Development Director at ACO Technologies. He has spent the last 30 years working across the building products industry, most recently overseeing business strategy and the introduction of new products to market for ACO’s Water Management division.
W
ith the dust settling after the announcement that the UK is to leave the European Union, the construction industry now faces the task of tackling the effects of Brexit on areas such as regulation and standards. As is the case with all EU member states, the UK, in the form of the British Standards Institution (BSI), is currently a full member of CEN, the European Committee for Standardization, meaning any new European standard for a product must be adopted in the UK within a set timeframe. The UK is also a full member of the International Organization for Standardization and this will not change irrespective of the country’s relationship with the EU and CEN post-Brexit. The Brexit negotiation process as a whole is likely to be lengthy and complex, taking anything from two to three years or possibly even longer if agreement cannot be reached in key areas. Regulation regarding the standards for construction products, and how these will be governed, will be no exception to this.
Voice of the Industry interesting paradox – it is not permitted to CE mark products being sold in the UK (unless they are being sold into the EU as well) but if UK manufacturers wanted to sell into the EU they would have to CE mark.
Driving the green agenda
are applicable across the whole of the EU and in many cases contain elements governed by the UK implementation of the Construction Product Regulations (CPR).Where a product is covered by a harmonised standard the manufacturer has to provide a Declaration of Performance and the product has to be CE marked. However, the question arises as to whether the CPR legislation would have to be unpicked if the UK leaves CEN.This would create an
■
One possible outcome is that the UK could remain a full member of CEN, in which case the current scenario on adoption of new standards would remain as it is now. However, the possibility exists that the UK could be de-selected and have to reapply for CEN membership. In this instance, assuming the reapplication process were to be successful (the most likely scenario), then the UK would become a non-EU member of CEN.A number of other countries hold a similar position already, notably Turkey, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. Here, the same standards would apply as they do currently, although the EU would not be able to enforce them as rigorously as is the case now. In the albeit unlikely event that the UK applied for readmission to CEN as a non-EU member and was unsuccessful, the anticipated outcome would be a reversion to British Standards (BS).This scenario is not expected to be preferred by the Government or industry, due to the likely costs of unpicking existing standards and drawing up new ones for products previously governed by EU standards rather than British ones. In particular this would affect the process of selling products into the European single market, as they would also need to conform to the relevant European standard. A second area of complication in this scenario would be around harmonised standards. Currently, where these exist, they
A further area where there is expected to be increasing divergence is in environmental legislation. As is the case with product standards, the UK is currently bound to meet the terms of all EU legislation around environmental performance and sustainability. However, the looming Brexit is set to create even greater uncertainty in this area. Planned EU legislation will bring in tighter controls for our counterparts remaining within the EU which will not have to be adopted within the UK as matter of course. This could place the UK behind the rest of the continent in terms of legislative expectations on companies – something which could impact on their likelihood of being selected as a supply partner. However, there is, of course, nothing to stop either the UK Government from imposing domestic standards which either mirror or even surpass their EU equivalents, or for UK industry bodies to self-regulate in the same way or, at least, to set voluntary standards for companies operating in the sector. This means that whatever the outcome, there is no need for standards to drop and for British manufacturers to lose out as a result. In the unlikely event that CEN membership is no longer an option, Brexit could represent a real opportunity for the UK to take its own dynamic path in both product standards and environmental operation.

Rainwater Management Buildings with metal profiles roofs are generally most affected, e.g. industrial, commercial or retail, as the metal sheets are non-retentive in terms of water absorption and have little friction or resistance to help slow the flow of rain water. In previous years when buildings had fibre or asbestos cement roofs, water ingress was not as common, as these materials provided much better water absorption properties which helped to slow the water flow more effectively, thus allowing gutters and outlets time to discharge any excess water.
Located in Watford, the Renault showroom was constantly enduring water ingress due to gutters with a poor outlet capacity
Uni-dam Rainwater Management System – protecting against water ingress Torrential rainfall is becoming an ever-increasing problem for businesses throughout the UK. Building damage, production disruption and stock damage are all serious, and common, issues faced by businesses as their gutter systems and outlets cannot cope with heavy bursts of rainfall. Ampteam has a solution – its Uni-dam Rainwater Management System, the easy, effective system that prevents water ingress into buildings.
A
ccording to the Met Office, four out of the five wettest years in the UK, since records began, have occurred since the millennium. Not only that, but they also recorded an increase in the frequency of days of extreme rainfall in the
UK since 1960.These unpredictable, intense days of heavy rainfall cause major issues to businesses and their buildings in the form of water ingress and overflowing, particularly if they use inboard gutters such as parapet or valley gutters.
Following installation of the Uni-dam system, the showroom has enjoyed a much more effective rain water flow with levels of water ingress now non-existent
Uni-dam – the effective solution for water ingress Uni-dam is a rainwater management system which was introduced to help with water retention levels, frictional resistance and interruptions to the flow of water within roofing areas. The system comprises a series of blades which run horizontally across an entire roof, helping to create a series of ‘minidams’ that disrupt the water flow and control the rate at which the water runs off into the gutter or outlet. Manufactured from either 0.7mm coated and galvanised steel or 0.9mm mill finish aluminium (whichever is more sympathetic to the original roof), the Uni-dam assembly is fixed to the rib or upper corrugation of the roof sheet, leaving a continuous gap between the bottom of the blade and the roof sheet. This gap allows water to discharge in a controlled manner into gutters and outlets therefore preventing any overflow into buildings.
Uni-dam installed at Renault car showroom Located in Watford, the Renault showroom was constantly enduring water ingress due to gutters with a poor outlet capacity.Ampteam was contacted and a design was created based on simple information such as location, roof length, slope length and roof pitch. Following installation of the Uni-dam system, the showroom has enjoyed a much more effective rain water flow with levels of water ingress now non-existent. In fact, a short time after installation, there was heavy snow fall in the area. This was successfully dealt with by the Uni-dam due to the system’s snow loading capacity, and also when the snow thawed and turned into water, it was able to effectively run into the gutter in a slow and controlled manner, giving the gutter time to discharge the excess water. 8 www.gutterliners.com * unifold@ampteam.co.uk ( 01384

Technical Focus
For projects involving complex 3D geometries, such as in the Great Court at the British Museum, tight dimensional control and 3D setting out provide the high order accuracies required to achieve a first time fit
Laser scanning with dimensional control 3D laser scanning and CAD modelling offer an important resource for design and construction teams. Where complex geometries are involved, more traditional techniques such as dimensional control may be more appropriate advises Peter Field, Managing Director of Warner Surveys.
3
D laser scanning and CAD modelling are now well established survey techniques, used extensively for the accurate mapping of large scale development projects and complex
buildings, as well as smaller projects. Often, however, laser scan surveys are requested when the specified tolerances call for higher level dimensional control techniques, applied using more traditional instrumentation.
High accuracy survey techniques were applied in setting out the supports for the brickwork cladding system on this 10-storey ‘twisting’ tower, working to a tolerance of +/-2mm, with over 60,000 points to be surveyed
24

Data accuracy
Whilst ‘fit for purpose’ for many applications, laser scanning is subject to inherent limits on accuracy, with terminal accuracy dependent on a number of variables. In the real world, most survey subjects are exposed to a significant temperature change which, alone, can account for several millimetres’ difference in the data registered. Additionally, the ‘noise’ produced within a point cloud from a flat surface can range from as little as 2-10mm, or more, depending on the quality of scanning instrumentation and the surface being scanned. Interpolation of this ‘noise’ can lead to further distortion in the data.Where the objects being scanned are vibrating or subject to other influences that can cause movement this will also affect the results. For this reason, claims that laser scanning can provide accuracy to within +/- 2mm should be approached with caution. Using the highest possible specification terrestrial laser scanner in a stable, controlled environment at relatively short range (10-20m) and with high order survey control (+/- 1mm) it may be possible to produce data to that kind of auditable accuracy. If the data is not auditable then accuracy claims should be dramatically downgraded, with +/- 5mm being more realistic. Moreover, the concept that modelled surfaces are more accurate than the basic cloud data is only true in certain circumstances. Most construction related software modelling packages were originally intended to represent design rather than the less predictable “as built” environment. Where projects need to address the interface between existing structures and new design, there may be inconsistencies that need to be acknowledged and addressed in a different way.

designers and contractors to address purely dimensional issues. Containing high quality, auditable data which can be interpreted factually, these databases offer the flexibility to interrogate and view point clouds to produce 2D plans and elevations directly. This allows the freedom to request additional deliverables from the original survey team in the form of sections or drill down into specific areas at a minimal extra cost. Often however there is no substitute for a full CAD model. Laser scanning or dimensional control? So how do you decide what level of input you need? The following may help: Laser scanning is a rapid and reliable method for surveying often inaccessible, complex or congested areas Survey control is the essential, traditional survey activity providing the auditable
accuracy to so many survey operations including laser scanning Dimensional Control has become the name given to high accuracy survey techniques used to achieve a good fit up between new, basic pieces of plant Critical Interface Surveying relates to high accuracy techniques and instrumentation used to achieve first time ‘fit up’ on site between new and old complex pieces of plant or structures. Ultimately, designers and construction professionals need to be clear about what the project demands. Equally, good survey control techniques must lie behind and support the laser scan, however high its quality, providing auditable proof that there is no degradation in the laser scan due to other outside influences.

Surfaces are often irregular, the geometry of old basic primitive shapes become corrupted and even the lack of perpendicularity between (for example) walls and floors can result in some software squaring off or smoothing out such irregularities.Although resulting in a very good looking model, this may not accurately represent what actually exists on site. In this instance, the accuracy of the model is dictated by the quality of the structure being surveyed. While a number of software companies are currently investigating how such limitations can be overcome, a commercially viable solution is still some way off. An alternative option available to data users is to bypass the automated software corrections by interrogating the underlying databases directly. Frequently overlooked in the delivery of 3D models, the point cloud database captured by the laser scanning process offers a valuable resource in itself for

In 21st century Britain, no household should have to suffer the negative impacts of fuel poverty on their wellbeing
Managing Director of NAPIT Certification, David Cowburn, discusses the recent consultation on the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) and how this could affect those living in fuel poverty in the future.
W
ith the current Energy Company Obligation nearing its end on the 31st March 2017, NAPIT has been active in consulting with the Government with its plans to introduce a new 5-year supplier obligation in its place. Currently, the Government is debating the possibility of extending the current ECO by a year as part of a ‘transition period’ prior to the introduction of a five-year scheme. As a stakeholder, NAPIT was recently invited to provide responses to a series of questions regarding the proposed transition period and the future of ECO in a consultation which ran between 29th July and 17th August. ECO is a Government energy-efficiency scheme in Great Britain, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and tackling fuel poverty; for this reason, NAPIT has always maintained strong positions on how the obligation should be implemented. It is a massive issue, since approximately 10.5% of householders in Great Britain suffer from fuel poverty. Currently, ECO possesses three distinct targets that are required for energy suppliers. These include the Carbon Emissions Reduction Obligation (CERO), the Carbon Saving Community Obligation (CSCO) and the Affordable Warmth Obligation (AW). These building blocks have been instrumental in providing low income households with energy
26
efficient installations, including loft and wall insulations or replacement boilers. In a bid to increase the scheme’s focus on supporting fuel poor households, coupled with improving cost effectiveness, the Government has proposed that the Affordable Warmth Obligation should become the sole supplier obligation from 2018 onwards, whilst incorporating elements from the other two obligations. The proposed transition period would however maintain CERO until the implementation of the five-year scheme. In our response to the Government consultation on ECO, NAPIT expressed its support for the proposed transition period as we believe it will provide certainty to the market and allow for time to consider longer-term plans. We also agreed with the proposal to realign the obligations above by increasing both the Affordable Warmth obligation and CERO during a transition period. Our only concern with the realignment of the three obligations is the removal of CSCO, since this obligation aimed to deliver primary insulation measures restricted to any home within the 25% most deprived in Great Britain and primarily promoted the tackling of fuel poverty in rural areas through a ruralsub-obligation. On the latter, NAPIT was asked whether we agreed with plans to stop the rural sub-obligation from April

2017 with the new transition period. We agreed that whilst this would be beneficial from a cost effectiveness point of view, we had concerns that the lack of a rural sub-obligation could have a negative impact on those living in fuel poverty within rural areas. In accordance with this fear, we suggested that an uplift could be applied within the new Affordable Wealth Obligation to encourage deployment in rural areas to mitigate this impact. Despite these concerns, we believe that the changes proposed by the Government will provide a cost-effective means of dealing with the problem of fuel poverty. In 21st century Britain, no household should have to suffer the negative impacts of fuel poverty on their wellbeing. For this reason, the Government’s intention to increase the element focused on fuel poverty from £310m to £450m can only be viewed as positive. Especially since they have claimed the proposals will result in over one million warmer homes over the course of the current parliament. At NAPIT, we are going to continue to monitor this debate in close detail, starting with the results of the consultation. We hope that the result addresses our concerns, whilst affirming the positive changes we believe the future will hold for ECO.

The new building’s teaching block and 200seat auditorium are linked and expressed by a curved facade that wraps around the north, east and south elevations, embracing the western end of the ‘Campus Heart’. Expressing each of the building’s elements separately gives an opportunity for a bold and striking composition, especially as the auditorium is able to ‘float’ at first and second floor levels, allowing the ‘Campus Heart’ landscape treatment to flow under

Produced by Aurubis, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler, Nordic Royal is an innovative alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving a rich golden through-colour that is very stable. The surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the atmosphere, resulting in a protective matt finish. It behaves differently to other copper products over time and does not develop a blue or green patina. Other copper alloys from Aurubis include Nordic Bronze and Nordic Brass – now also available pre-weathered. his £80m development has transformed a brownfield site into two rippling 23- and 24-storey glass towers, that offer 360 apartments with a mix of studios, along with one-, twoand three-bedroom units. All apartments have floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors with balcony access. The residents also benefit from a range of facilities on site, including a gym, business lounge and concierge services. The buildings effectively sit on a ‘landscaped lid’, which covers the single level basement accommodating parking and refuse plant spaces. The scheme then uses bioengineering technologies to establish a series of soft landscape terraces. These wrap around and conceal a basement car park, along with groups of trees, which enclose a residential garden. The buildings are super-insulated and the concrete frame will act as a heat sink – absorbing heat on warm days and releasing it back into apartments when it cools. An innovative link-up with the neighbouring ExCel Exhibition Centre will also see excess heat piped directly into the two towers. This

will provide all the necessary heating and hot water requirements and significantly reduce maintenance costs by doing away with the need for individual boilers. A critical design requirement for such a super-insulated building was the avoidance of any risk of thermal bridging at the many concrete-to-concrete balcony connectivity points – so highly-efficient structural thermal breaks were required throughout. The preferred solution was the Schöck Isokorb type K for cantilever balconies. With its innovative HTE pressure-bearing module and Neopor core, the unit provides extremely high thermal resistance; and is also a load-bearing element which transfers bending moment, stress and shear forces.
Complex balcony detailing The balconies on the HOOLA, which are all precast in a Reconstituted Portland Stone Concrete, meant that thermal break supplier Schöck had to work closely with specialist Thorp Precast of Newcastleunder-Lyme. Luke Smerdon-White, Technical Director at Thorp, takes up the story: “We had to design, manufacture and deliver 1410

Research at the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD) at Oxford Brookes University shows that as a result of airtightness and fabric U-values being improved in UK building, thermal bridge heat losses are responsible for an increasing percentage of the overall building heat loss. It is common for thermal bridges to account for 20-30% heat loss in multi-residential units (as calculated by thermal modelling) and balcony The preferred solution was the Schöck Isokorb type K for cantilever balconies
connections can be a major contributor to the thermal bridge heat loss if effective thermal isolation is not included in the design. Schöck offers a number of highly effective solutions to various thermal bridging situations. In addition to concrete-to-concrete capability, the Isokorb range provides totally verifiable solutions for concrete-to-steel, steel-to-steel and even a maintenance-free alternative to wrapped parapets. All solutions meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations and offer BBA Certification and LABC Registration. The requirement that the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (the fRsi value), in residential buildings, must be equal to, or greater than 0.75, is comfortably met by incorporating the Isokorb. It also complies with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2012, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings and respectively heat losses through non-repeating thermal bridges. The lambda values of the Isokorb enable energy loss to be reduced by as much as 84% to 91% in various connective situations.

The design and detailing coordination on our part was taken from the 2D consultant’s information, which we converted into 3D Tekla modelling. “The balcony detailing is complex. The exposed front-face is curved, with almost 50 different dimensional configurations, while the internal face has a facetted line that had to correlate with the glazing line and opening doors. The ability to integrate the Schöck Isokorb thermal breaks using 3D BIM details was critical; as we had to both accommodate the slab and column reinforcement – and achieve the finite positioning of the connection modules for structural and cost efficiency. The logistics involving deliveries was challenging too and involved 235 articulated lorry journeys over a 58-week period, all on a just-in-time basis.”

the result is a harmonious sense of place. In the Leicester scheme, the council wanted to celebrate the rich architectural heritage of the city, so our lighting designs focus on specific buildings. Planning which buildings will be illuminated, and which left to sit in shadow, guides the attention of the visitor and builds a sense of the character of the area. How people move through the space will also depend on the lighting and in Leicester we considered key journey routes, such as from the station to the city centre, ensuring the lighting invites people to move in a particular direction to a planned destination. Leicester Council appreciates that investing in the design of the city centre will bring economic as well as social benefits – and there is a definite financial case to be made for this type of investment. Some time ago we designed a lighting scheme for Peterborough. The council wanted people to stay in the city at night rather than taking themselves – and their spending money – to other towns. Our lighting scheme was designed to make the city spaces attractive and welcoming – clearly signposting that this is a space to linger in rather than travel through – and the council used the argument of economic benefit to justify the investment. We see lighting as a “quick win” for urban

city in daylight is a fixed thing. The buildings are immutable – for better or worse – and architectural gems sit alongside cultural horrors in whatever pattern has been chosen by the planners and designers. Love it or loathe it, it is what it is. But as soon as darkness falls, the situation changes completely. Our perception of the space, the relative importance of individual buildings or landmarks and the routes we use to travel around are all dictated by light. A good lighting scheme can be truly transformational, allowing a city to reinvent itself. Just such a transformation is being executed in Leicester where the Connecting Leicester scheme is an ambitious project to create a connected, safe, family-friendly and cohesive environment in what had become a fragmented and unwelcoming urban environment. Sutton Vane Associates has been involved in the initial phases of what is a longterm project, as the council recognised that lighting has a key role to play in the reinvention process. Key to the success of any urban lighting project is harmony. If the lighting is considered holistically, rather than allowing individual buildings or features to be lit individually, then

T
he homes are the first to be built in the UK’s first ever eco town, North West (NW) Bicester, as part of the Elmsbrook phase of the project. On completion, Elmsbrook will comprise a total of 393 highly energyefficient, true zero-carbon homes. These include a mixture of privately-owned houses and flats, as well as affordable housing, all of which are fitted with extensive efficiency measures, such as solar PV panels and triple glazing. To reach Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5 standards, developer A2Dominion needed to limit each property’s potable water consumption to just 80 litres per person per day. As well as reducing pressure on the mains supply, flooding protection was also a key concern – so they enlisted the expert help of civil engineering consultancy Infrastruct CS Ltd to specify a water management solution. The Infrastruct team worked with Graf UK to design, install and commission a complete rainwater harvesting and stormwater management package for each of the 91 properties – consisting of a 1500L Platin tank and a soakaway made of Rain Bloc modules. Tim Trotman, Director at Infrastruct, explains: “Graf UK is a company that’s local to us, and we’ve worked with them several times before – so we knew they could help us find the right water-saving solution to meet the needs of this unique project. The Platin tanks sit out of sight underground, and use submersible pumps to feed collected rainwater into a header tank in the loft of each home. The header tanks then gravity-feed the water to the properties’ bathrooms, where it is re-used for sustainable toilet flushing.

NW Bicester – and rainwater harvesting plays a key role in ensuring we are managing natural resources to the best of our ability. The Graf UK systems mean Elmsbrook residents are now benefitting from cost-effective, efficient rainwater harvesting, as well as a solution that helps protect against flooding.”
Engineered with ultimate ease of installation in mind, the unique flat shape and lightweight design of Graf UK’s Platin rainwater tanks means they are groundwatersafe and can be buried at significantly shallower depths than traditional cylindrical cisterns – allowing for up to 80% less digging. The tanks also feature integrated, self-cleaning filter technology for minimal maintenance, as well as wide tank domes for simple filter assembly during installation and straightforward ongoing maintenance – ensuring full peace of mind for end-users. Graf UK’s Rain Bloc stormwater modules are made from expertly-designed plastic cells that fit seamlessly together to build tailormade, crate-style soakaways. The Rain Bloc black models used at Elmsbrook have a lorrybearing capacity of 60 tonnes with a 500mm earth covering.Weighing just 19 kilograms, the modules are also easy to install and are quick to link together using simple connectors. Kevin Reed, National Specification Manager at Graf UK, concludes:“It is an absolute privilege to be involved in such a pioneering project. With extreme weather conditions becoming increasingly common in the UK, demand for rainwater harvesting systems that can be combined with stormwater management is on the rise.At Graf UK, we’re committed to offering cutting-edge solutions that are fit for the future – designed with long-term performance and simple, ongoing maintenance in mind. The Elmsbrook development is indeed the perfect example of how RWH systems can be effectively bolstered to provide effective SuDS alongside their harvesting capabilities.”
■
“The system is engineered to use hardly any mains water, only diverting to the mains supply if the tank is empty (for example, after a particularly hot, dry spell). This not only helps save water, but also keeps bills down for homeowners and tenants. To manage excess water in the event of heavy rainfall, each rainwater harvesting system has its own soakaway made up of Graf’s Rain Bloc modules. These stormwater tanks all feed into a central soakaway, where water is gradually released back into the underlying ground conditions in a controlled way – reducing pressure on the drains and minimising flood risk.” Elmsbrook at NW Bicester is the only development in the UK to meet the Government’s strict requirements for the delivery of eco towns set out in the Planning Policy Statements (PPS1). Elmsbrook is set to boast a primary school, a community centre, an eco-pub and an eco-business and retail centre. Once finished, NW Bicester as a whole will consist of up to 6000 sustainable homes. Steve Hornblow, Project Director at A2Dominion, adds:“We’re proud to be leading the way with the country’s very first eco town. Our hope is that this innovative project will now set the standard for the development of many more sustainable communities in the UK. Environmental integrity is at the heart of

aided considerably by the willingness for all construction partners to cooperate, with the aim of achieving the best possible solution. The arena opened in time for the Cardiff Devils home game against Belfast Giants in March 2016. There were a number of challenges to overcome from the outset, primarily the choice of roof and wall products to achieve the aesthetics. It was important that the chosen solution would sit comfortably on such a high profile sporting building. Euroclad’s Vieo wall profile was chosen to help deliver the sleek, modern and unique aesthetic experience that stood out among other world-class venues. The functional needs of the building also presented an unprecedented series of challenges, driven by the internal operational environment of the Ice Arena, specifically

Specialist contractor Massey Cladding Solutions installed the roof and walls and Managing Director, Ray Massey, commented:
“After designing the roof and walling systems, Euroclad supplied us with the insulation materials we required – I was very impressed with the laboratory tested products, as they met our brief accurately.” The Vieo walls of the Ice Arena Wales were manufactured from Colorcoat Prisma in Silver Metallic, Grey Aluminium and Anthracite; a solution that provided the building with diverse, complementary colours that define and enhance the distinct aesthetic design. The Secret Fix SF500 roof was manufactured from Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra pre-finished steel in Goosewing Grey; a solution that complemented the distinct wall aesthetics, whilst also providing superior durability and corrosion protection for the harsher external rooftop environment. The option to use Colorcoat pre-finished steel products in collaboration with Euroclad as a supply chain partner of Tata Steel ensured superior, tried-and-tested performance, which has been achieved through decades of collaborative testing and joint product development to meet a wide range of specifications. Colorcoat pre-finished steel forms the backbone to many Elite Systems with Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra and Colorcoat Prisma pre-finished steels being the only steel materials that can be used to manufacture the outer sheets of most Elite Systems. Elite Systems offer a 25-year system guarantee, which covers the entire package of components that are either manufactured by Euroclad or sourced from the leading manufacturers of construction products. This all combines to add peace of mind for the entire roof and wall systems. This guarantee is underpinned by the Confidex Guarantee

installed as part of the roof and wall systems, the insulation needed to be of single density with a high compressive strength, without being too dense, to avoid any potential for interference with the acoustics. Through consultation with Knauf Insulation’s technical support team, a bespoke product was developed to deliver a thermal conductivity of 0.036 W/mK.This unique product was developed within Euroclad’s timescales, managing to meet the stringent project specifications, even with a variety of acoustic and thermal testing included as part of the product development. The resultant engineered roof and wall systems were enhanced versions of well-established Euroclad assemblies, which outperformed the acoustic requirement laid out by the design teams. The use of alternative constructions and materials, combined with tried-and-tested products and systems, has identified a new way to construct these systems should exceptional thermal or acoustic performance be required. The supply chain worked together closely to transform the challenging design brief into reality. An example of this collaborative approach can be seen in the way that the roof and wall systems were developed, with valuable input from all parties, which resulted in a new system that: Achieved the demanding performance requirements; Could be manufactured efficiently; Could be practically installed; Didn’t compromise the desired visual appeal.

Set in spacious rural grounds with ‘Music House’, a former mansion, at its heart, the school provides expert tuition for musically-gifted students
Kemper System hits the right note Stuart Hicks from roofing specialist, Kemper System, discusses the installation of a Stratex Warm Roof System at Yehudi Menuhin School’s new practice rooms scheme, as part of a green roof build up.
A
mongst those who aspire to reach the highest standards of excellence in classical music, the Yehudi Menuhin School, near Cobham in Surrey, is almost as famous as the globally-recognised violin virtuoso who established the school in 1964 and from whom it takes its name. Set in spacious rural grounds with ‘Music House’, a former mansion, at its heart, the school provides expert tuition for musicallygifted students from around the world
between the ages of eight and 19. Most are boarders and recent improvements in the residential accommodation at the school have also included development of a new practice house, which will provide facilities for one-to-one tuition and musical practice in an acoustically-controlled environment. The building also features external hard landscaping that creates an outdoor performance space with amphitheatrestyle steps around a terrace to provide the seating.
Specification considerations Constructed by Sunninghill Construction, the 600m2 single-storey music block comprises 11 practice studios, along with a teaching area, a library, offices, storage, toilets and a kitchen area. The flat-roofed building has an 18mm ply roof with numerous rectangular roof lights and Miller Bourne specified the Kemper System warm roof having used the same combination of insulation boards and Kemperol cold applied liquid membranes on other projects. The design team worked closely with Kemper System’s technical department to determine the optimum specification for the roof that will provide a BBA accredited 25 year service life. While all of the roof is flat, various sections have been constructed at different levels, providing a terracing effect that works well with the finished green roof and, along with the glulam timber and glass canopy which reaches out from the main roof over the entrance, adds interest to the building.
t
While all of the roof is flat, various sections have been constructed at different levels, providing a terracing effect that works well with the finished green roof
In addition to the practical considerations for the building’s function – such as the extensive acoustic wall build-ups that isolate the sound within each practice room – the scheme’s Brightonbased architect, Miller Bourne, also had to consider the project’s rural location; right on the periphery of the school’s campus, adjacent to a neighbouring farm. The BREEAM ‘Very Good’ practice rooms development has been constructed as a contemporary building that blends in with its leafy surroundings with a modular green roof and rainscreen cladding and timber. It also delivers high standards of thermal performance, thanks to its Stratex warm roof system from Kemper System, and these sustainability credentials are further enhanced by its solar PV panels.

Green Roofs The level changes were amongst the key drivers for specification of the Kemperol cold applied system as the liquid membrane cures to provide a seamless, monolithic and elastomeric membrane that adheres permanently to the substrate and cannot delaminate. As a result, any potential vulnerability to water ingress where the roof steps up or down has been avoided and the system’s proven root resistance as a base for green roof installations provided the client with further assurances that it would offer a robust solution for this application.
Warm roof build up Roofing contractor, Imperial Contracting Limited, installed the warm roof on behalf of main contractor, Sunninghill Construction, applying a primer to the plywood substrate before laying a Kempershield vapour control layer (VCL). Kempershield is a reinforced aluminium, cold-applied, self-adhesive VCL, which can be used on concrete, profiled metal or timber deck substrates. The installation team then fitted the standard 150mm Kempertherm insulation

The rigid PIR insulation board has a dense, closed cell structure that gives excellent compressive strength, along with low thermal conductivity, adding to the robust roof build up. The sections of Kempertherm were adhered to roof using Kemperfix adhesive, which has been especially designed to offer an exceptionally strong bond when used as part of the Stratex warm roof build up.

With the insulation in place and fully bonded to the substrate, Imperial Contracting Limited could move on to installation of the Kemperol V210 membrane. Kemper System’s D Primer was used to prepare the surface. The Kemperol V210 membrane was then applied in a single wet-on-wet process, comprising the cold applied liquid resin and a 200g flexible reinforcement fleece, which is manufactured using a 25% recycled plastic bottle content. This combination ensures both durability and flexibility of the cured membrane. For the details, including the rectangular roof lights, the installation team cut the fleece to size during the installation process, enabling the system to be tailored to the exact dimensions before application of the resin. Imperial Contracting Limited began installation of the membrane by applying the Kemperol V210 resin to the substrate. The reinforcement fleece was then laid onto the wet resin, with more resin immediately applied on top and rollered to ensure complete saturation of the fleece and removal of any air bubbles or creases before the system was allowed to cure to ensure complete encapsulation of the roof with the reinforced membrane.
Pleasing appearance

Once the waterproofing membrane was installed on the roof, Imperial Contracting Limited was able to install the green roof elements. The planting had been agreed early in the design process and had included research of local species to ensure that the roof was in keeping with its local landscape. Consequently, the prepared green roof planting was already at a mature stage of growth when the modules were installed, creating an aesthetically pleasing effect from completion. The practice rooms building is now fully operational, helping to nurture the next generation of musical talent and provide an informal outdoor venue at this very special school.

Rooflights
Barrel vaults are the bespoke daylight solution
Marvault uses Marlon ST Longlife and Marlon FSX, multiwall and solid sheet polycarbonate, offering exceptional impact resistance and surface protection
One of the most cost-effective ways of introducing natural light and ventilation into an existing building is through the specification of rooflights. From leisure and sporting facilities, commercial buildings through to education and health centres, Brett Martin’s Marvault is a versatile, barrel vaulted rooflight system which can capture light at any time of day and be tailor-made to any building.
A
popular way to introduce daylight and reduce energy use, CO2 emissions and running costs, Marvault is particularly suitable where aesthetics are important with many designers having a preference for the out-ofplane profile created by vault rooflights.
Bespoke as standard A superbly engineered bespoke glazing system, Marvault can be used to great effect on all types of roofs, including profiled industrial, curved, low pitch or for standing seam built-up metal roofing systems where a secret fix style system is required. They are also the ideal rooflight system for canopy and walkway applications.
Capable of spanning up to 9m, the Marvault roofing system includes an elegant aluminium framing system which can maximise natural daylight. The system allows specifiers to achieve unrestricted lengths for greater design flexibility. Widely used in schools, public buildings and residential projects due to its durability and excellent weather resistance, Marvault offers versatility, long-term reliability and exceptional detailing.
Glazing options Marvault uses Marlon ST Longlife and Marlon FSX, multiwall and solid sheet polycarbonate, offering exceptional impact resistance and surface protection due to
a co-extruded UV protective layer. And, with thermal performance now crucial at every project, Marvault glazing options are available for U-values down to 1.6W/m2K and can help buildings achieve compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations. Depending on the desired internal environment, glazing options available in Marvault include clear, bronze and opal polycarbonate.Whilst clear provides direct light, the tinted options reduce solar heat gain, minimise glare from the sun and can provide privacy where necessary. And where ventilation is a priority, there are a number of opening options for Marvault rooflights to provide natural ventilation, in a choice of manual or powered. These rooflight systems also offer improved safety, as the rooflight is raised out of the roof plane, making them less easy to walk on.
Built to specification Designed and manufactured in Brett Martin’s own BSI quality accredited and ISO 14001 environmentally accredited factories, these tailor-made Marvault barrel vaults are backed up by comprehensive support from design to specification, and finally installation, ensuring specifiers can help realise their aspirations. Rooflights make a vital contribution to every building and are often the only way of introducing natural daylight into many buildings. The physiological benefits are enormous – daylight relaxes, improves concentration and makes people feel better. Architects, specifiers and building owners must switch on to the benefits of natural daylight to save energy, ensure compliance and, crucially, create an environment people want to spend time in. A popular way to introduce daylight and reduce energy use, CO2 emissions and running costs, Marvault is particularly suitable where aesthetics are important

Forbo ‘brings the outside in’ at visitor centre Architects at Nicoll Russell Studios have worked closely with Forbo Flooring Systems to create an attractive and welcoming interior environment at The Kelpies Visitor Centre at Helix Park in Falkirk.
T
he centre provides an all-weather, all-year-round facility from which visitors can admire the magnificent 30m high Kelpies, the world’s largest equine sculptures. It also incorporates a cafe, exhibition space and a retail area.
Euan McCallum, Senior Associate at Nicoll Russell Studios, said:“When it came to specifying flooring for the centre, we initially contemplated having an exposed concrete finish, which would reflect the industrial heritage of The Kelpies. However, our client
Forbo’s Allura Stone LVT provides an attractive and welcoming alternative to exposed concrete at The Kelpies Visitor Centre
was concerned that the concrete may feel too hard beneath visitors’ feet and potentially be unwelcoming. So, we contacted Forbo for help as we were aware of the Allura Stone luxury vinyl tile range, which offers an appearance similar to polished concrete but without the associated costs and drawbacks.” The main public areas of the centre have been fitted with Allura Stone LVT in three colourways – Grigio Concrete, Charcoal Concrete and Natural Concrete. The natural aesthetics and 50 x 50cm format were chosen to blend effectively with the granite paving of the plaza outside. The installation pattern not only reflects the exterior paving but also echoes the patterns of the stainless steel cladding panels on the Kelpies themselves. Other Forbo products installed as part of the floor scheme include Nuway Grid entrance matting with Coral Anthracite inserts to complement the Allura Stone floor coverings, and Surestep safety flooring for back of house areas, such as kitchens and staff rooms, to help prevent slips and trips. Euan concluded:“Throughout the entire project, Forbo were very helpful providing advice and all the samples we wanted. They not only assisted with the product selection, they also provided us with technical assistance and gave us a fully detailed specification for laying the materials on the substrate. Overall, we are all very pleased with the finished project and the help we received from the company.” 8 www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/allura * info.flooring.uk@forbo.com ( 0844

Cavity wall thresholds kept dry The name Level Threshold Tray might be considered a misnomer, as it can actually be used in most styles of threshold. This product from Cavity Trays of Yeovil provides a systematic way of protecting thresholds and, in so doing, removes risk. The Type LTT Level Threshold Tray encapsulates the threshold masonry so the transmittance of damp upwardly and inwardly is prevented. It provides an easy standardised way or ensuring level and low profile thresholds are protected against damp permeation. Manufactured in solid petheleyne DPC, the Type LTT is available in a range of standard opening sizes. If you happen to be building to a non-standard dimension, a bespoke service operates. The Type LTT acts as a threshold DPC, and additionally extends downwardly over both faces of the masonry. At either end of the tray the protection rises, and wraps around the reveal masonry. This reveal wrapping allows the horizontal conventional DPC in the masonry wall to terminate
within it either side of the opening, despite being at a different level. Continuity of protection is thus maintained. The reveal vertical closers are able to similarly interface with the ends of the Type LTT, with the moulded upstands providing continuous three-dimensional defence against wet ingress. Similarly the oversite membrane can positively link against the Type LTT moulding. Suitable for inner and outer masonry skin, the Type LTT is not visible once installed – trimmed finish to exterior face. In isolating areas most susceptible to damp transference, the Type LTT permits abutting flooring, abutting insulation and DPCs/membranes to continue over an inner skin and converge with an exterior skin that itself is isolated from dampness at the point of convergence.

Accessible bathroom and wetroom solutions from Schlüter-Systems A significant amount of time and thought is invested into the design of bathrooms for architectural projects. One design aspect that is important to consider is how our needs may change over time and the accessibility of the bathroom, especially for those with a disability. This is where barrier-free bathrooms or wetrooms with floor-level showers, easyaccess sanitary ware and the provision of seating areas, can offer a practical, future-proof solution. The huge range of ceramic and natural stone tiles available today means that creating luxurious, stunning, yet safe, slip-resistant surfaces is easily achievable. Schlüter-Systems can help protect those stunning installations whilst providing a complete solution for a CE marked waterproof floor-level shower area. The uncoupling membrane, Schlüter-DITRA 25, which has been tried, tested and trusted for over 25 years, serves as a waterproofing membrane and a vapour pressure equalisation layer, protecting tile or natural stone coverings from cracking
or debonding. The same features can also be found in the underfloor heating system Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E making it ideal for heated floors and walls in wetrooms with tile and stone coverings. The tile and stone covering in the shower area must be sufficiently sloped to allow for appropriate drainage. This is easily achieved with the prefabricated levelling and shower tray components, which are available with a point drainage system or a component linear drainage system. The horizontal and vertical linear drainage system, Schlüter-KERDI-LINE, has been updated to ensure that it meets BS EN 1253, providing a constant 50mm water seal and to meet flow requirements which is in compliance
with National House Building Council (NHBC) regulations to offer a complete system solution. Schlüter-Systems has a long history of providing solutions for the application of tile and stone. To book a CPD seminar or find out about Schlüter’s CE Marked waterproofing solutions, contact the team today.

Mapei products specified for tiling renovation Mapei adhesive and grout products have been specified for the installation of a stone pattern in the reception and washroom areas in a refurbishment to the Freemasons’ Hall, London. Avantgarde Tiling was awarded the contract to design, supply and install a new stone pattern to the reception floor area and to install large format porcelain tiles and feature walls (including stone vanity and credenza tops) to the washroom area. Mapei products were specified to complete the tiling projects, and included the popular Limestone Ultracolor Plus grout (shade reference 299) which was applied to 70m2 of tiling within the reception area of the building. Kerapoxy white was applied to 94m2 of washroom tiles, ensuring that a stain resistant approach was installed in areas subject to heavy traffic. The Grade II* listed building is reputed to be one of the finest Art Deco buildings in England and, as such, due to its popularity
was in constant use throughout the renovation work. The reception area was completed over two weekends of work, first requiring a quick setting screed for the installation of substrate. Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 was specified for its quick setting properties, allowing Avantgarde Tiling to install a temporary carpet over the substrate so that the venue could be used without any constraints. The following weekend, the installation of the new stone floor was carried out entirely using Mapei’s Ecoprim T, Adesilex P10 for mosaics, Elastorapid Grey A for fast track floors and Keraflex Grey Maxi for the large format walls. These Mapei products were used due to their suitability for the listed interior of the building.

Shackerley’s ceramic granite cladding gives a cohesive look to the Premier Inn hotel and Vue cinema at the new leisure complex
Shackerley delivers premium quality cladding for major North East development Ventilated facade specialist, Shackerley, has supplied over 2100m2 of SureClad ceramic granite cladding for a new Premier Inn hotel and Vue cinema at the £30m Feethams leisure development in Darlington.
C
lose to the town centre, and also boasting a lively mix of restaurants and bars, the landmark leisure complex is integral to Darlington’s regeneration strategy. The ceramic granite cladding was specified
by Darlington-based Niven Architects who were keen to give the development’s tallest and most prominent buildings a high quality external finish. “Although we were working within an affordability envelope, we had no intention of compromising on quality
The SureClad Access system allowed high performance thermal and acoustic insulation to be hidden behind the hotel facade
or design,” commented Director, Peter Hodges. “We selected Shackerley’s SureClad ventilated facade system in contrasting colours and finishes for the Premier Inn, and a combination of render and SureClad ceramic granite facade for the Vue cinema.” To bring a cohesive feel to the development, semi-polished cream ‘travertine’ ceramic granite was used on both buildings; paired with highly polished black panels on hotel elevations, and with natural, unpolished grey on the cinema. “This offered a costeffective solution whilst achieving a modern quality feel that fitted with our design aspirations,” said Peter. The Premier Inn’s demanding acoustic and thermal specification called for additional insulation to be fused into the building’s structural panels. Shackerley’s SureClad Access system was employed to overclad this high-performance insulation with ceramic granite, fixing through to the structural framing system. Tony Blake, Commercial Director at specialist contractor Speedclad, said: “SureClad ceramic granite cladding is a high-quality, well-engineered product and the Access system gives us complete flexibility on site. Being able to install panels nonsequentially makes it easier to set the building out, and if we need to leave any panels out we can come back to complete gaps later.” “The Feethams complex is an important part of Darlington’s regeneration journey,” commented Paul Spensley, Project Manager at Urban & Civic Plc, the property development and investment company responsible for the project.“We’re very proud of the development and believe it would be difficult to find a better leisure scheme in the UK in terms of quality of finish and operator line-up.” 8 www.shackerley.com * info@shackerley.com ( 0800

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation Redland clay tiles meet tough planning rules Waterproofing solutions keep guests dry
The roof of a Manchester hotel required general repairs and had failing waterproofing to the parapet walls. The building had been suffering from water ingress from the roof for a number of years. The failed areas of waterproofing required replacing with a flexible waterproof system which could be terminated over the parapet wall and into the existing waterproofing. Remmers Kiesol was used as an injection agent to remedy the damp in the brickwork and is ideal for fair-faced masonry with high moisture penetration. Remmers Multi-Tight 2K was also applied, as it has a crack-bridging capacity five times more effective than the standard flexible mineral based waterproofing systems. 8 www.remmers.co.uk * sales@remmers.co.uk ( 01293 594010
Faced with tight planning restrictions in a conservation area, Mell Homes selected Cathedral Clay Pantiles and Postel Clay Tiles to roof Fosters Croft, its development of three- and four-bedroom homes in the village of Hatfield near Doncaster. “There were numerous planning conditions for this project so, where we might normally have considered concrete tiles they were not an option for this project,” says Natalie O’Connor, Director of Mell Homes. Neil Barron of BC Tiling explains: “We had already used Cathedral Clay Pantiles on two other developments that had won awards from the NHBC and we like the quality of the product, the reasonable costings and their availability.” * marketing.redland@monier.com

MINIFLOOR – automating the welding process for a faster, more consistent weld Heat welding for vinyl floorcoverings has been used for years and is considered a crucial factor in the durability and longevity of the flooring surface. It plays an important role by preventing ingress of dirt, bacteria and water into seams. However, welding will only benefit vinyl floorcoverings if carried out properly. A common reason for seam failure is improper workmanship where factors like welder fatigue are evident. A solution to this problem is the MINIFLOOR – a highly innovative drive unit which converts an existing hand welder into an automatic welding machine. This increases the performance of the welding project with a higher welding speed and a more consistent weld finish. * info@welwyntoolgroup.com

AluK specified for Lifetime Homes at Orchard Village The former Mardyke Estate in Rainham, east London, has undergone a substantial transformation to make way for a new residential development, Orchard Village. Designed by PRP Architects and developed in its entirety by Willmott Dixon, the project specified AluK aluminium curtain walling, window and door systems throughout all four phases, three of which have been completed. The design brief required all homes to comply with Lifetime Homes standards which are based on inclusivity, accessibility, adaptability, sustainability and good value. AluK SL52 curtain walling, 58BW TBT (tilt before turn) window, 58BD balcony door and GT55 TB commercial entrance door systems were specified for each project phase. In the case of windows and doors, Lifetime Homes requires that occupants have a reasonable line of sight from a seated position in the living room, and the use of at least one window for ventilation in each
room. The AluK 58BW TBT window and 58BD balcony door systems were designed with the tilt turn handles below 1200mm from the finished floor to meet accessibility requirements. To meet security requirements, all windows and doors complied to the Secured By Design (SBD) initiative, with the GT55 TB commercial door systems integrating electric strike access with key fob entry. The AluK GT55 TB is believed to be the first aluminium commercial door system to be SBD-accredited.
The AluK systems specified have slim sightlines and profile sizing to meet bespoke design requirements. The aluminium profiles are thermally broken, providing the homes with energy efficiency qualities that comfortably exceed the current Building Regulations Part L1A minimum U-value of 2.00 W/m2K.

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems enhances student accommodation
The University of Birmingham’s new Chamberlain Hall student accommodation is an impressive example of regeneration. In keeping with the surrounding landscape, the project comprises two linked, tall towers – 17 and 21 storeys high – and five ‘finger’ blocks.

impact on the facade’s integrity, maintaining the clean lines and sleek elevations. Making the facade work and integrate with all the cladding elements involved, Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems designed new methods of fixing. The flush facade was a must and all the elements – Comar glazing, mesh and copper panels – needed to integrate. One of the engineering challenges on the project was the connection of the perforated copper cladding panels to the Comar 6EFT curtain walling. This connection had a few considerations, such as the metals being at opposite ends of the galvanic table, aesthetic demands, thermal performance and the structural considerations of loading panels to Comar 6EFT curtain walling. Continental Installations worked closely with Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems and main contractor Balfour Beatty on the complex facade. The team designed a bespoke capping profile which was extruded with reinforced walls, capable of fixing the copper panels directly to it. A heavy-duty pressure plate, with a fixing port arrangement, was used to mechanically fix the capping to the pressure plate. Subsequent regular fixings then transmitted

This bespoke design then included inward, full-height opening windows, which sat behind the facade – Comar 5P.i Advanced Tilt/Turn open-in windows were selected. These windows were perfect for the application as they offer slim sight-lines, thus maximising daylighting as well as the profiles themselves which have thicker walls that provide robustness and large spans to ensure they stand the test of time. On the window elements, Comar 5P.i Advanced Tilt/Turn open-in windows were selected. These tilt/turn windows are perfect for the application; they offer slim sight-lines to maximise daylight, as well as the profiles themselves which have wide wall thicknesses that provide robustness. The wire mesh was fitted directly onto the window. The five ‘finger’ blocks were sited to draw people through the buildings and connect with the landscape beyond. Fullheight windows were selected, again, from the Comar 5P.i Advanced Tilt/Turn range. The new glass entrance connects the gallery to the surrounding park and features two sets of sliding glass doors
GEZE UK entrance is a work of art When the Whitworth, part of The University of Manchester, launched an architectural competition for its extension, it wanted a design that would make its important collection accessible to a wider range of visitors and re-establish the relationship with its grounds, home of England’s first gallery in a park.
T
he winning design, by McInnes Usher McKnight Architects (MUMA), is both sensitive and inspirational – glass, stainless steel and brick have been married with the Grade II listed building to create an elegant exhibition space overlooking the park. And with over 440,000 people visiting each year, GEZE UK was chosen to create an automatic entrance to ensure that the building – and therefore the art – is accessible to all. The new glass entrance connects the gallery to the surrounding park and features two sets of sliding glass doors powered by GEZE’s Slimdrive SL NT automatic operators. The doors have been positioned directly opposite each other to create a lobby. This contributes to sustainability by ensuring heat loss and gain is minimised without limiting accessibility. It also helps to ensure a pleasant even temperature for visitors and staff, without blasts of hot or cold air when the doors are opened.
68
Thanks to its slim design and a drive unit height of just 7cm, the Slimdrive SL NT operator has been discretely installed so it is barely noticeable to the user. The operators are finished in the same brushed simulated stainless steel finish as the porch structure and two 130mm diameter stainless steel bollards with push pads have been installed to allow visitors to activate the doors. Pocket screens have been installed to ensure the safety of visitors to the gallery. As with all GEZE’s automatic operators the Slimdrive SL NT enables compliance to the Equality Act and BS 8300. The Whitworth’s £15m extension project has already been recognised by the architectural community scooping a RIBA National Award 2015, Building of the Year in the RIBA North West Regional Awards and two AJ Retrofit Awards – Cultural & Public Buildings and Heritage & Listed Buildings. It has also been awarded the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2015 for ‘redefining the way that it engages with its public, connecting

T Keylex mechanical digital locks were supplied by Relcross via IRM of Yate for the new North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College campus
Keylex unlocks staff room access at Weston’s new college Keylex mechanical digital locks have been installed on the doors of the staff rooms and the first aid room at the new North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College campus, just completed by main contractor BAM Construction. The locks were supplied by Relcross via IRM of Yate, near Bristol. The K700 lock that was specified is a standard duty, high security lock ideal for many hundreds of operations per day
he majority of doors at the new £12m complex are controlled by proximity cards, issued to all students and staff, but some areas are designated for separate control by mechanical digital locks. These are the four staff rooms plus the first aid room and similar Keylex locks are already fitted to all the other staff rooms and first aid rooms on the other college campuses. This provides a common access control solution for all of these areas giving immediate access for authorised users without the need for a proximity card. The K700 lock that was specified is a standard duty, high security lock ideal for many hundreds of operations per day. It has an entirely mechanical operation with no electronics or electrical wiring involved. Code combinations from 12 buttons provide over 4000 code permutations from the recommended three to six digit codes. The slipping clutch mechanism nullifies forced attack or vandalism from the outside and the stainless steel buttons will not indicate regular usage patterns. Free exit is allowed from the inside, without code entry, regardless of the lock status. The lock can also be set to allow free access from both sides when required. Relcross’ Sales and Marketing Director, Stuart McMaster, said: “While electronic access control can be very effective, there are still circumstances where a mechanical digital lock is the best option. It’s a quickfix solution. No wiring is required, there are no batteries to replace, just solid mechanical reliability for which Keylex locks are renowned.” North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College is a free school for 14 to 19-year-olds and has a strong focus on science, technology, engineering and maths. The school opened in 2014 based at Weston College’s South West Skills campus, but has now moved to its brand new, purpose-built home. The new £12m building is in Weston-superMare’s junction 21 Enterprise area and includes an all-weather sports pitch, canteen, lecture theatre, sports hall and technology and enterprise spaces, as well as a purpose-built science floor with laboratories and an outdoor terrace for experiments. Where low impact environmental interiors are required, Amwell’s Sylan can be specified in Real Wood Veneer which is FSC certified
Five important considerations when selecting your washrooms Amwell Systems provides a wide range of washroom solutions and its specialist team are on hand to provide advice and make recommendations based on your requirements. However, there are five key considerations that you can take into account when starting your project to ensure that the correct washroom is specified.
U
nderstand your environment. Selecting the right material for the environment of your washroom is crucial for your project; it will determine how long the washroom will last. A medium to high traffic, dry environment, such as an office washroom, would be suited to high pressure laminate (HPL). Amwell’s Minima range in HPL fulfils all practical requirements whilst providing a modern, sleek look at a budget-friendly cost. A glass cubicle system would be ideal for a leisure centre or spa that requires a waterresistant washroom whilst keeping a high-end look. Manufactured from toughened safety glass, Amwell’s Coolite range is versatile offering both glass doors and divisions with stainless steel fixtures and fittings.
Comfort and privacy When specifying your washrooms, comfort and privacy are important issues to consider. Flush-fronted cubicles are an ideal solution to ensure the privacy of users. Amwell’s Urban range is ideal for office and retail environments – with a floating appearance, it provides privacy whilst looking smart and sophisticated. For leisure environments and schools where privacy is required at the same time as a durable, hard-wearing system, Amwell’s Splash range is ideal. Specified in solid grade laminate (SGL), these cubicles are suitable for high traffic areas and are both completely vandal and water-resistant.
70
Knowing your users
Equality
When it comes to creating your washroom, it is vital that you understand whether the washroom is going to be suitable for its users. In schools, for nursery age and EYFS children, fun, bright, colours and patterns are important to make toilet time less scary. Many children aren’t used to going to the washroom alone, so providing a fun and friendly environment is very important. Amwell’s Playtime and Acorn ranges come in a choice of bright, vibrant patterns and can accommodate differing door heights for supervision and privacy requirements. The all-important anti-finger trap hinges and emergency release locks bring design and functionality together.
When designing a washroom you need to consider access for everyone. There are various laws and guidelines in place to ensure that equality and consistency takes place, Document M includes the requirements surrounding colour contrast.Amwell Systems provides the light reflectance value (LRV) for its products; these can be obtained at specification stage to ensure that guidelines are being followed from early on in the project.
Corporate guidelines Retail and corporate washrooms are often subject to the same brand identity guidelines as a store front or boardroom. Amwell’s Sylan ColourCoat cubicles can be matched to any standard RAL colour, providing a high-end, luxurious look that fits in seamlessly with other areas of the building. Where low impact environmental interiors are required, Sylan can be specified in real wood veneer. All veneers are FSCcertified and sourced from responsible and sustainable forests. Sylan veneer is free from defects that occur in natural wood and ensures that true consistency, pattern and colour can be repeated every time.

Hauraton drainage channels used at Maritime Transport headquarters in Felixstowe The new Maritime Transport £5m headquarters in Felixstowe has received the accolade of ‘Winner-Design (Non residential)’ at the Suffolk Coastal Quality of Place Awards held in October 2015. Designed by architects, Wincer Kievenaar, the Maritime headquarters provides an impressive gateway to Felixstowe Port. The headquarters’ extensive car park, set with composite grey blocks, is drained by 98m of Hauraton RECYFIX PLUS 150 channels fitted with Class C250 HEELSAFE ductile iron gratings. A further 47m of RECYFIX PLUS 100 channels were also installed in other locations on site. The RECYFIX PLUS channel unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable recycled polypropylene (PP), formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations, from frost conditions to strong sunlight –
including the ultra violet (UV) spectrum. The channel unit also features galvanised steel top edges which house the ductile iron gratings. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained. The PP is also naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Ken Burgess, Hauraton’s Project Manager,
comments: “The main contractor, E.L. Construction, liked the product for its ease of installation. Each RECYFIX PLUS 150 one metre unit, complete with its grating, only weighs 12.8kg, so it’s easy to position and robust enough to withstand building site conditions.”

SMARTPLY PROPASSIV meets all the requirements of EN 300 for the production of OSB3 panels and therefore can be installed as any other OSB3 panel
Panel system helps homes exceed standard SMARTPLY PROPASSIV is the perfect wood-panel system for ultra-low energy buildings. A revolutionary addition to the timber frame industry, its outstanding energy-saving properties have received certification from the Passive House Institute (PHI) for its performance for airtightness.
A
versatile, strong and costeffective OSB panel system, SMARTPLY PROPASSIV could play a vital role as part of a highly-sustainable and fabric first approach to construction. Its durable, sustainable qualities are likely to prove crucial if the UK is to meet its target of an 80% cut in carbon emissions by 2050; with all new homes built to be ‘zero carbon’. The Passive House Institute plays a crucial role in the development of the Passive House concept – the only internationally-recognised, performancebased energy standard in construction. To be recommended by the PHI, products must be tested according to uniform criteria and proven to be of excellent quality regarding energy efficiency. It was used as a Maidenhead home’s airtight layer and provided the integrated vapour barrier, which removed the need for an additional air and vapour control layer (AVCL). Building work was carried out by MBC Timber Frame Homes, a specialist in the production of timber frame Passive Homes. The wall cassettes were manufactured from SMARTPLY PROPASSIV structural OSB3 panels and were constructed off site, before being transported to site where the stylish, sustainable home was completed within a strict three-week deadline.
78
This remarkably rapid construction time was possible due to the reduced man hours required to install the SMARTPLY PROPASSIV system. The structural air and vapour tight panels can be readily cut and fixed using standard timber frame fixings, removing the need for the secondary installation of additional membranes, sealants and foams. With SMARTPLY PROPASSIV having created the perfect insulation envelope in just 19 days, tests showed the completed home achieved 0.55 Air Changes per Hour (ACH), comparing favourably with the Passive House requirement of 0.6 ACH. SMARTPLY PROPASSIV has also played a role in ensuring the first certified Passive House home built in Cheshire exceeded

industry standard airtightness regulations. Constructed by developer, Igglu, a total of 100m2 SMARTPLY PROPASSIV was installed on the ceilings at Red Walls, a stylish £3.5m energy-efficient residence in Knutsford, built on forward-thinking technology and natural materials making it the ultimate in luxury. Selected for its outstanding airtight performance, SMARTPLY PROPASSIV ensured Red Walls achieved an N50 value air tightness level of 0.17 (ACH), comfortably exceeding the Passiv House standard. Ian Forde-Smith, Director at Igglu, commented: “We have been highly impressed with the performance of SMARTPLY PROPASSIV. Independent attestation of airtightness from Passive House Institute has shown it was absolutely the right product for us.” Each SMARTPLY PROPASSIV panel features alternating layers of wood strands coated with a high quality formaldehyde-free resin system and wax to deliver outstanding levels of airtightness.A specialist coating is then applied to provide vapour control properties to ensure a premium performance OSB solution for super-insulated and passive buildings. “OSB is assumed to be airtight, but tests showed a huge variation in performance, between manufacturers,” explained David Murray, Innovation Manager at SMARTPLY. “Developed from our OSB3 system, SMARTPLY PROPASSIV has been proven to achieve the highest levels of airtightness required to meet the Passive House Standard.” Water vapour diffusion tests on wood based panels have shown that the vapour diffusion value of products with similar characteristics (thickness and density) can vary from one panel to the next, due to the nature of the products i.e. chips/strand/fibre of wood assembled and glued together do not form an homogenous layer with consistent properties. 8 www.mdfosb.com * info@mdfosb.com ( 01322

Building Elements Snickers unveils RUFFWork – heavy duty working clothes
UZIN system used in Plattens Fish & Chips refurbishment UZIN products were recently used to renovate the floor at Plattens Fish and Chip Shop in Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk. The old floorcovering had to be removed before two coats of UZIN PE 480 damp proof membrane was applied over the old sub-floor. UZIN PE 280 primer was then applied, followed by a coat of UZIN NC 150, a heavy-duty smoothing compound. Safety flooring was laid, capped and coved in the kitchen and preparation areas whilst luxury vinyl tiles were installed in the front of house. Both floorcoverings were stuck with UZIN KE 2000 S pressure sensitive adhesive. 8 www.uzin.co.uk * info@uzin.co.uk ( 01788 530080

Kee Klamp expands range of tubular fittings
Kee Safety has expanded its Kee Klamp range with the introduction of 12 types of tubular fittings. Designed for installation on steeper gradients, the new slope fittings offer builders an aesthetically-pleasing option. The latest addition to Kee Klamp’s portfolio is an extension to the current range of slope fittings. The new components have been designed to enhance the building of guardrail along staircases and ramps, particularly when the slope is greater than 30°. The range introduces single fittings to cater for situations where currently a combination of fittings is required. Not only does this improve the aesthetics of the finished guardrail, but it allows for a quicker, easier installation. * sales@keesafety.com

Historical artefacts halt pumping station installation The T-T Pumping Station installation team were in for an eventful day when they went to install a Mercury Package Pumping Station at St Marys Church in Nantwich. As the team dug a hole for the pumping station, they unveiled some concealed artefacts that needed to be investigated. The job was stopped and archaeologists were called in to investigate the objects – unfortunately no hidden gems were found. However T-T’s pumping station did make it down the aisle. The pumping station is now installed and is to facilitate the growing number of visitors to the church. 8 www.ttpumps.com * response@ttpumps.com ( 01630 647200
