eptember, as well as being the time when summer looks to be coming to an end and we’re bunkering down for the winter, is also the start of the academic year.Whilst thousands of keen students are about to start architecture and other construction-related courses, news headlines about the lack of graduate places must somewhat dampen their spirits.
Publication Manager Steve Gull steve@fca-magazine.com
Message boards are full of discussions on students lamenting the lack of job opportunities, even for free internships and work experience, and employers bemoan the fact that they have already had to make staff cuts, and with covering the workload of missing colleagues there is simply no time to look after trainees who require supervision.
Account Executive Adele Mason adele@fca-magazine.com Studio Manager Paula Smith paula@mixedmediainfo.com
It’s the same story with apprentices – lack of funds and working short-handed means employers cannot spare the time to take on an apprentice, even though they may be fully aware that replacing skills for the future is of the utmost importance – and even if college courses can be found for the academic element of much skill training, the practical element cannot be arranged.

Our Legal & Business page in this issue looks at a new scheme allowing apprentices to be trialled on a ‘try before you buy’ basis, and news from the FMB states that “the Cross-Industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force (CCATF), which aims to increase the number of construction apprenticeships available to help avoid future skills shortages, is warning that firms of all sizes cannot afford to simply ignore the need to train people who are enthusiastic about a career in construction, despite the difficult economic situation, and are urging more employers to take on apprentices as the new college term approaches.”

estico + Whiles became involved in this project at competitive bid stage in early 2007, but the local authority and school had been involved in the gestation of the Hackney BSF programme since 2005. The client’s brief was to utilise the funding available from the Hackney BSF programme to refurbish and add to the existing building stock. Having existed on the site for over 100 years, the school is very proud of its heritage and original buildings and wanted this retained and developed. Accordingly, the brief was to upgrade and maintain the existing accommodation, whilst also adding new facilities to cater for an increase in student numbers resulting from the establishment of a sixth form. Prior to redevelopment, the school did not have an assembly hall and pupil and staff eating facilities were also compromised with two awkward and unconnected dining spaces. Therefore a new assembly hall and single space dining hall were key elements of the brief along with the requirement for a new sixth form facility. Historic architecture The school site is comprised of a series of individual campus buildings aged between 35 and 100 years old (each named after a famous woman in history), two of which are listed – one locally and one statutorily. The two key new build element of the development – the Nightingale Building and the Dining Pavilion – are deliberately deferential to the qualities of the historic architecture of the school site, and particularly that of the Edwardian Pankhurst Building. The architectural language of the redevelopment is one of respect and considered intervention, with the massing of the new buildings creating

Greenhouse Sustainably sourcing The new Dining Pavilion slots comfortably into a previously seldom used space between the gable ends of the Pankhurst and Curie buildings, but deliberately does not touch either of these building. A lightness of touch is achieved by the use of glass at the junction between new and old. All new materials have been sustainably sourced and were selected with regard to cost, context, suitability and life cycle. The strategy of retaining and refurbishing the existing building stock is also one of the most sustainable approaches possible. Early investigations concluded that the school should be refurbished and extended, and not demolished and rebuilt, cognisant of the school’s desire to retain its listed buildings and the views of the local planning authority. With this in mind, the level of refurbishment had to be established and balanced carefully against the areas of new build. Renewable energy The available budget did not extend so far as to refurbish all areas of the school campus and the works to the Tereshkova Building (the most recently built) extended only as far as new ICT infrastructure. At completion of the project, approximately 40% of the accommodation is new-build, and 60% refurbishment. The end result is a teaching environment of great quality, and one the school and local authority are immensely proud of.All of this has been achieved within a testing Design & Build contract – a fitting model for these austere times. The installation makes use of two biomass boilers serving Curie Block, Dining Pavilion and Rosa Parks Block. The biomass boilers provide all hot water to these blocks with surplus capacity contributing to the

heating requirements of the building. The biomass boiler installation contributes 497,366kWh/yr to the heating and domestic hot water requirements of the Marie Curie and Rosa Parks Blocks. A photovoltaic array is mounted on the roof of the Curie block; linked into the block’s electrical installation. The photovoltaic array contributes 1,201kWh/yr to the electrical requirements of Curie block. Carbon emission reduction The renewable energy target for the project was to reduce the CO2 by a minimum of 10%.The initial proposal to generate domestic hot water using biomass boilers resulted in a reduction in CO2 of approximately 7.8% when compared against a similar capacity direct gas fired storage calorifier installation. The proposed services installations were subsequently reconfigured to allow the usage of the biomass boiler installation to be maximised. The biomass boilers act as the lead heating
boiler with priority given to the generation of domestic hot water. This configuration allows surplus energy to be injected into the LTHW heating circuit when not required to generate domestic hot water. An annual carbon emission reduction of approximately 23.9% is achieved when compared against a similar capacity direct gas fired hot water calorifier and gas fired heating boiler installation. In addition to the renewable thermal energy provided by the biomass installation a photovoltaic array has been installed to provide renewable electrical energy. The photovoltaic installation comprises eight modules each rated at 180Wp.The installation has a total capacity of 1,440Wp and is linked into the electrical installation serving the Curie Block. Completion was achieved in June 2010, ready for the new 2010-2011 academic year.

The biggest changes were in the provision of mechanical and electrical services, especially in the dedicated services used in the provision of Renal Dialysis Care. A new RO Water Treatment Plant Room and new mains water connection was required in addition to comfort air handling and upgrading Nurse Call and Medical Gas provisions already on site.

As phase I is completed, Phase II, the new build element of the project, will allow the current services to be decanted from the old buildings into the completed new build.
Three phases The construction work will be split into three phases to ensure that clinical services can continue to run on a near normal basis during the building work. Phase I encompassed the refurbishment of Barclay and Davison Wards for the new Renal unit. The existing Renal unit is located in a temporary modular building, currently located on the site of the new build facility. Barclay and Davison Wards are to be refurbished and once complete the existing Renal unit will decant into the newly refurbished building. The existing temporary modular building will then be removed from site. A continuing commitment A spokesperson for PMT explained why it was decided to keep these buildings and refurbish instead of demolish and rebuild. “Due to the requirement to maintain a fully functioning hospital during the construction phase, as well as a compact site with little easily accessible open space, a series of phased developments were identified as the best method for achieving the Trust’s requirements. Key to the development of the new build was to relocate the Renal Dialysis Unit. Cromer and District Hospital was fortunate to have existing accommodation which had until fairly recently been used for clinical procedures. This area was identified as ideal for refurbishment to comply with current healthcare requirements and would allow the new build footprint site area to be available for construction earlier.
12
“The Cromer and District Hospital campus has evolved over 100 years and seen many additions and extensions. Not all accommodation was deemed suitable for refurbishment at economical costs; therefore, the Trust’s instructions were for a majority new build on the existing site. This demonstrates a continuing commitment to the people of Cromer and North Norfolk of a high class healthcare service.”
Maximised daylight In order to meet with the tight construction programme, the use of metal frame external wall sub frame (Metsec) has allowed the building to become effectively water tight at an earlier stage than by using traditional construction methods alone. The large flat roof was identified at an early stage as suitable accommodation for the mechanical air handling plant and Photovoltaic Panels. The design of the building accommodated a parapet wall, thus complying with Health & Safety (CDMC) to allow for maintenance. The use of a single ply membrane product (Sarna) system allowed for quick and efficient installation of insulation and membrane.
Dedicated services The refurbishment requirements were set out to match the existing Renal Dialysis accommodation, with the Trust asking the project team to achieve HTM/ HBN compliance where possible. All finishes were required to be stripped back and new

Renewable energy Due to the high localised water table found across the site, sub ground rainwater storage and discharge into the public drainage system had been identified as being unable to match the capacity required. The large flat roof provided a suitable reservoir for storm condition downfall, reducing the peak in rain water entering the surface water system. A planning requirement demanded the development minimised energy consumption and provided for at least 10% of predicted energy usage from renewable energy sources. The renewable energy target will be achieved by incorporating a 90KWe/152KWm Combined Heat & Power (CHP) system, which will provide the base load for all heating and electrical services. Electricity generation will also be supplemented by photovoltaic cells comprising of 31 solar panels (50m2), which will provide the primary source of electricity in tandem with the CHP system. The photovoltaic cells will provide
12.9% of the building’s predicted energy requirements, exceeding 10% planning renewable energy target. Significant legacies Once all services have been relocated to the new build hospital and the refurbished Barclay and Davison Ward, Phase III will commence and see the demolition of the existing buildings which will allow for the external works phase of the project, including car parking and landscaping, to be completed. At project completion approximately 2,500m2 of building will have been demolished to accommodate the New Cromer Hospital and associated landscaping. This includes the demolition of the former Hospital building, but retention of the former TB Wards (Barclay and Davison Wards) which have been refurbished for Renal Dialysis. The former Boiler House has been demolished. The existing MRI/ Imaging Modular Building remains on site. Voice of the Industry The first road bridge in the world to be made of Accoya
g n i p e e K l a g e l r e lumb The forthcoming EU Illegal Timber Regulation (ITR) will result in specification changes for architects and contractors; Tony Miles, managing director for International Timber, discusses these changes and explains why timber should be embraced as a modern construction material.
T
imber is a versatile, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing building material. It has been used in construction for many centuries, with of the world’s oldest surviving wooden buildings, situated in the Horyuji Temple in Japan, dating back over 1,300 years. However, despite this, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the
14
specification of timber in some sectors of the construction industry as they get to grips with legislation such as Eurocode 5 and the forthcoming EU Illegal Timber Regulation (ITR). The green building agenda in the UK has been gathering pace over the last few years and there is a growing demand for sustainable products and systems as the industry works towards tighter targets. Timber is an ideal solution, but some still lack confidence when it comes to specifying it. One of the main reasons for this is many are unclear how to make sure that the timber they’re using is legal and meets the required standards. Take Eurocode 5, for example. This is a standard which establishes common rules across the European Union for the structural design of timber buildings. It was introduced across the EU in 2010 with the aim of setting a national design standard for Europe and removing potential barriers to trade. In the UK, an agreement was made to withdraw all parts of BS 5268 by 31 March 2010 and use Eurocode 5 instead.

New standards When this happened last year, the main changes for designers included the introduction of new symbols and material strength modification. Also, BS EN 1995 was more of a theoretical design code rather than a code of best practice, but Eurocode 5 contains only the essential rules and formulae for design. Because of this, it lacks the quick look-up tables of BS 5268, so there are now new calculations to deal with when specifying timber. As a result of this, many people have been wary of the new code. The new calculations can initially seem complex, but Eurocode 5 does have advantages for the industry. It has helped big multi-national companies as they can now use the same timber design code in a number of countries, both in and outside of Europe. Also, because it is formulae driven, it has been possible to develop computer software to help designers, making the code easier for them to understand and use. As with any change, it just takes a bit of time to adjust and although Eurocode 5 has brought in some requirements that ▼

Voice of the Industry years, partly due to the fact it can be used structurally but also because it can be left exposed, creating a dramatic focal point. Its warmth is a stark contrast to the coldness of steel and it is also around two thirds the weight, giving a better strength-toweight ratio and making it easier to handle, transport and assemble.

Embrace the benefits Cladding is another area where developments in technology are driving the specification of timber. The rising number of finishing and treatment facilities in the UK mean it is growing more popular as a cladding material, with products like Sikkens treated timber,Thermowood or Accoya providing attractive, durable and high performance solutions.
have meant structures using timber have had to be strengthened, overall timber use and specification has not had to change radically to meet the new standards. Chain of Custody One big regulation change coming up is the EU Illegal Timber Regulation (ITR) which takes effect in 2013. This focuses on the origin of the timber and means all parts of the supply chain will need to take individual responsibility for staying within the regulation and making sure the timber they’re buying or selling comes from a legal source. It has always been important that the source of the timber can be identified, but with the introduction of the EU ITR it will be essential. The benefit for the end user is that under the new regulation all companies involved in selling timber must use a system of ‘due diligence’ to show that it comes from a legal source, but with only two years left until the regulation takes effect, do you know whether your suppliers have a good understanding of what is expected of them as a result of these changes? One of the most common myths is the belief that if a product is certified then it is legal, but this is not always the case. For timber to be legal you must be able to demonstrate ‘Chain of Custody’. ‘Chain of Custody’ is a mechanism for tracking
16
certified material from the forest to the final product but for a product to be legal all links in the supply chain must be certified by an approved scheme such PEFC or FSC. If this isn’t the case then the product might not be legal. Practical and sustainable When the regulation changes in 2013, ‘Chain of Custody’ will be the easiest and safest way to show evidence of where the timber has come from and how it’s been handled. When buying timber, make sure your supplier provides you with the right supporting documentation to show ‘Chain of Custody’. If you don’t receive this, then there is no way of proving that you’ve purchased ‘Chain of Custody’ timber. Timber is a strong and versatile product and architects and contractors shouldn’t be put off when it comes to using it. There is a huge range of timber products on the market and advances in technology over the last few years now mean that it can be used in an even wider variety of applications. Take Glulam, for example. This is made from layers of parallel timber laminates, usually European Whitewood. It has greater strength and rigidity than solid constructional timber of equal dimensions, providing practical and sustainable alternative to steel beams. The popularity of Glulam has risen over the last few

As we move towards 2016 and low carbon targets, timber products will play an even bigger role in sustainable construction. Legislation like Eurocode 5 and the EU ITR is designed to help architects and contractors. It makes sure that the structures they create will be durable, long-lasting and fit for purpose, helping the industry to embrace the benefits of timber as a truly sustainable building material. ith over one million visitors through its doors in 2010,The Imperial War Museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. The Museum opened its newly refurbished Lord Ashcroft Gallery recently, which houses the ‘Extraordinary Heroes’ exhibition at a cost of £5m, the first major permanent gallery at the museum for over ten years. The new gallery, which contains the world’s largest collection of Victoria Crosses, provides visitors with a range of interactive touch-screens and state of the art video montages and sound clips depicting life stories and actions of war heroes and soldiers. Redevelopment of the gallery was project managed by contractors Jerrum Falkus Group who carried out high level refurbishment and fitting out works. A seamless finish The design for the emergency exit staircase included a glass balustrade railing system, glass opening gate and the construction of steps leading to an emergency exit door. As well as providing a critical evacuation route, it was important that that the design blended into its surroundings, giving a modern, light and clean feel to the area. C.R. LOC™ System was used to ease installation of a glass balustrade system within the gallery which was supplied and installed by entrance and security specialists, System2000 Group. C.R. Laurence’s beautiful frameless, dry glaze balustrade system enabled System2000 to install 19mm toughened glass with accuracy, speed and efficiency, giving clean lines and a seamless finish to the final installation. Controlled environment The TAPER-LOC™ System conforms to BS6180:1999 and BS6399-1:1996 and is more than 50% faster than alternative methods and unique in that it uses a horizontal Taper-Loc design, which allows the system to be adjusted, dismantled and re-set. This gave the installers the flexibility and control they needed on site for accurate installation and will make replacing scratched or broken panels effortless in the future. Using the TAPER-LOC™ Tapers and C.R. Laurence’s exclusive TLK9 installation/ removal tool, the installers mechanically slid the tapers horizontally into the base shoe, compressing them together. Once compressed, it then expanded in thickness and locked into place. When the correct tension was applied, the torque wrench then clicked and brook for a few degrees of rotation. The same tool can also be used to loosen the Tapers for glass alignment or replacement.
as a museum gallery needs sensitive thought to reduce disruption and the effects of construction on its exhibits and external environment. As the TAPERLOC™ System required no cement, this significantly reduced unnecessary mess and untidiness so the installation had limited effect on its surroundings. The gallery has proven popular with visitors since it opened its doors to the public and the new emergency exit now provides an escape route which meets health and safety requirements, whilst blending into the overall look and feel of this unique space.

he £255 million Finzels Reach development, named after a Victorian sugar importer who had a factory in the area, will comprise 399 apartments, 400,000 sq ft of offices and 87,000 sq ft of shops, cafes, restaurants and other leisure facilities, while also incorporating a number of protected and Listed buildings. Centrepiece of the development is Bridgewater House, the largest speculative office development on site outside London, and which comprises some 110,000 sq ft of Grade A office space, set to be rated as BREEEAM Excellent. Bridgewater House, in the process of completion, will be one of three office buildings in the development. The 5-storey, 3-sided glass atrium of the new building incorporates steel framing systems from Wrightstyle, the Devizesbased steel glazing specialist. The full-height atrium is designed to bring maximum light to each intermediate floor and provide 30 minutes of integrity and insulation. Finzels Reach, due for final completion at the end of this year, is already a landmark in the city and will become a new commercial, social, retail and cultural hub. Apart from the commercial space, over 1,000 people will live in the development, and Temple Cross at the centre of the scheme will be one of the city’s principal public areas.

You’re hired! Access to Apprenticeships, which launched in August, is a government scheme that will help business owners take a leaf out of Lord Sugar’s book and ‘try before they buy’ to find their next apprentice, whilst providing help and support for young people aged 16-24, offering an extra boost moving into an apprenticeship.
T
he scheme is designed to provide young people with the opportunity to demonstrate to employers their commitment to work and study, and their ability to perform to a required standard. For an employer, is it a chance for them to see the work ethic and suitability of an apprentice, and whether they may fit within their organisation. Under the scheme, employers can take on a prospective apprentice for up to 60 days unpaid work experience over the period of six months. If they achieve the required standard during this period, then each apprentice will complete the remainder of their training as a paid employee for £100 per week. Upon qualification a payment will then be made back to the employer. “It’s a great incentive for employers, as it’s really a win-win situation for them,” says Nick Hayward, CEO of leading vocational training provider, ATL. “An employer will be able to secure an extra pair of hands for a whole year for as little as £1500. For employers who want an apprentice but who are uncertain about finding someone suitable for their business, it gives them a chance to try them out.” A vital resource ATL operates a nationwide network of training centre and has more than 5000 students passing through its door each year. Courses range from gas, plumbing and electrics to renewable energy technologies and building controls. Every course on offer at ATL leads to industry recognised skills and professional qualifications. “There has been a major skills shortage in the building services sector for the last 15

years, and apprenticeships continue to be a vital resource,” added Nick. “They are key to ensuring that we have the skilled work force we need in the future and much greater value needs to be placed on these types of vocational professions. These highly technical skills are vitally important for industry and our economy.” Statistics from the National Apprenticeships Service show apprenticeships can have many benefits for an employer. 80% of employers who employ apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive, and 88% of employers say apprentices lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce. Vocational education “The Access to Apprenticeship scheme is finally a step in the right direction by the Government,” agreed employer Charlie Mullins, managing director of Pimlico Plumbers. “For years we have been trying to bring a more ‘old fashioned’ apprenticeship back to the industry. They are an important part of my business, and indeed, the route I followed to begin my own career in plumbing. Apprenticeships offer young people a high-quality and respected hands-on training route and many employers and young people can benefit from them. For a business they are a way to harness and find fresh talent and to train new people the way we want them to learn and work right from the very beginning. “In her recent report on vocational education, Professor Wolf concluded that jobs like plumbing, carpentry, and electrics have been downgraded in social status over the years, a situation she said must be amended if we are going to solve the

huge youth unemployment problem. But the implications are far wider than that, these skills are the lifeblood of industry and the trades which are keeping our country moving.” A real career path Having an apprentice can also benefit a company in other ways, with 81% of consumers saying they would favour using a company which takes on apprentices. A study carried out by the University of Warwick Institute for Employment Research (IER) concluded that apprentices are seen as loyal, more likely to stay with a company and steeped in company values. Charlie added: “Since I started my apprenticeship, more years ago than I care to remember, I haven’t been out of work for a single day. I am passionate about giving the younger generation the same opportunities that were given to me. An apprenticeship puts you on a real career path.” Access to Apprenticeships will provide up to 10,000 places in the first year, with a similar amount expected to be created in following years. www.atl.co.uk

Fire, Health & Safety It is the personal responsibility of company directors to ensure the health and safety of workers on site
The f o t h heig y t e f sa Ensuring worker safety at height is a consideration in any design. John Boyle, Director at Eurosafe Solutions, advises specifiers on minimising the risks and ensuring the safety of workers on roofs and external facades.
M
any specifiers are clearly focused on the two main principles relating to buildings, firstly, how can they be built safely and secondly, how can they be maintained safely. The Working at Height Regulations 2005 reinforced the importance of the correct fall protection systems being used on roofs. The Hierarchy of Risk Management is fundamental to this, which breaks it into three categories. The first is – can the potential hazard be designed out of the building? Secondly, where it is not possible to remove the hazard completely, can it be made so that the worker is not exposed to the hazard, by protecting it.Thirdly, where access is required to all areas and there is exposure to a hazard, a fall restraint system should be considered. The location of the fall restraint system and the lanyard length should prevent the
26
worker reaching the hazard and therefore being at risk of a fall. So in essence, the guidance states that the fall protection system specified should be fit for purpose. Collective protection When specifying fall protection systems it is important to consider the location of the area that requires fall protection. In some cases, the whole roof may require safeguarding and, as such, it may be necessary to protect the whole perimeter of the roof, which is why guard rail is often specified. Manufacturers have responded by innovating in order to ensure that guard rail is more aesthetically pleasing and also the design of such systems now often means it cannot be seen from ground level. Where access is not required, the adjacent fall hazard demarcation can be specified creating a collectively protected “safe zone”.
Respond online www.fca-magazine.com or using free reader enquiry card
The beauty of collective protection measures such as guard rail and demarcation is that they provide protection to all workers on the roof “collectively” without the need for extensive individual training. Other locations where fall protection is required include roof edges, where access may be required for gutter cleaning and leakage checks, access may also be needed to the rest of the roof.Where roof access is via ladders and roof hatches, these areas may also need fall protection systems. Appropriate systems There are many maintenance reasons for regular access to the roof – rooflights require cleaning on a regular basis, air conditioning units, satellite dishes and solar panels all need regular checks and again, the fall protection systems which provide safe access to these require regular testing and inspection to ensure safety of personnel during this process.
Fire, Health & Safety Specifying the correct fall protection system is very important. One of the main considerations is how many workers will be accessing the system? Specifiers also need to assess the level of experience and skill of the workers using the system, including how well trained they are. If this information is unknown, it is best to assume very little knowledge, for the better protection of staff. Another factor to take into account is what length of time will workers spend on the roof and finally, how regularly will they be using the system? Any reputable fall protection company should be able to advise on the most appropriate system for a specific building’s requirements.
fall protection should be tested at least every 12 months, as should PPE associated with work at heights and eyebolts on roofs. Furthermore, Abseil anchors should be tested every six months, as part of meeting Work at Height legislation, including BS 3N 365, BS EN 795 and BS EN 7883. If an accident occurs on a roof when the fall protection systems have not been tested to this required frequency then the building owners would be liable, which could lead to expensive claims.
Another consideration and an area where occasionally fault can occur is in ensuring the compatibility of fall protection with the roofing system in place. It is worth checking with the roof manufacturer which fall protection systems they recommend and are approved to work efficiently.
Falls from height are still the biggest reportable cause of fatalities in the workplace, as reported in RIDDOR (Report of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations).
Failure to do this could mean that this could invalidate the warranty on the roof and put workers at risk.Testing and inspection of a fall protection system would ensure that the right fall protection was in place, providing additional protection and greater peace of mind. Ongoing maintenance The ongoing maintenance of fall protection systems is vitally important and Work at Heights regulations state that cable-based
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 states that any employee required to work at height must be suitably protected from any potential fall hazards.
Reduce the risks Specifiers play a key role in emphasising the message of the importance of an annual inspection of a building’s fall protection systems. Being exposed to the elements in this way means that it is inevitable that fall protection systems may one day need maintaining or replacing. However, the number one reason that they need to be tested regularly is because of misuse due to lack of knowledge or human error, which can lead to compromises of its integrity. This is why effective training of workers is all important. Fall protection systems shall be used only if the user and a sufficient number of available persons have received adequate training specific to the operation
Abseil anchors should be tested every six months
The Work at Height Regulations state that fall protection systems shall be used only if the user and a sufficient number of available persons have received adequate training specific to the operations envisaged.Training of site staff is therefore essential to ensure that everyone involved in the work is competent. The training should reduce the risk of a fall occurring and it should ensure that those who will be working at height are aware of how to avoid falling and how to minimise injury or risks to anyone who should fall. The introduction of corporate manslaughter legislation back in 2008 made this ever more of a concern for company directors, as it is their personal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of workers on site. Should an accident occur, it could mean that not only will the company suffer huge financial penalties, but also individual directors could be liable. Specifiers have an important role to play in helping building owners to reduce the risks to workers. However, installing the correct fall protection equipment is only half the issue and it is the ongoing testing and inspection of these systems that ensures the long term safety of workers on roofs and facades. www.eurosafesolutions.com

rozen in Time most successfully balances a respect for the building’s formal heritage with forward looking experimentation to create an urban generator disguised as a natural phenomenon. The proposal explodes the building outwards and far beyond the traditional definition of a wall. The structure becomes a force of nature, to be enjoyed like a fountain or park, beautiful from afar and inhabitable up close. As the seasons change and the building moves from ice-scape to summer cloud, it transforms the city itself into a performance space where the Pushkinsky Theatre is the star. Frozen in Time takes its inspiration from the poem “Winter Morning” by Alexander Pushkin which celebrates the way the
bracing Russian winter can transfigure the landscape and create possibilities. The façade elements disperse water which in the summer becomes a cooling mist and in winter freezes to a new façade of ice surrounding the building. In this way the deep cold, which so often isolates people, actually creates a space for social interaction and a new landmark. “DuPont™ Corian® hi-tech surface has been used in the skin of the building within an innovative and poetic concept,” said Juan Andres Diaz Parra. “Hundreds of elements, each one made with a metallic structure and a sphere of DuPont™ Corian®,
become like stalactites in winter due to the low temperatures, while in summer they diffuse water creating a mist that modifies the external environment of the building, offering an even more fascinating atmosphere at night.”

and night these strands change to suit the environment, during the day they appear translucent and reflective like shaded glass, and at night, when the theatre is filled with patrons, they are illuminated making the theatre a beacon within the square.
“The electroluminescent lightwires are coated with DuPont™ Teflon® to prevent them from tangling and enable smooth moving wires as DuPont™ Teflon® is a material with one of the lowest friction coefficients plus as the durability of DuPont™ Teflon® is higher than the outer sleeve of the lightwires which are PVC. Electroluminescent technologies have a low power consumption compared to other lighting technologies,” explained Adrian Reinbroth, Franziska Boettcher and Jenny Grossman. “Transforming the energy from the moving wires with pietzocrystals provides the energy which the lightwires consume while glowing.Their brightness appears the same from all angles of view, because electroluminescent light is not directional, as well as homogeneous and well perceived even from great distances. The copper-golden glass front is made from float glass with DuPont™ SentryGlas® interlayer and a sheet of metallic coated float glass. The gold coating with its high reflectance helps to retain warmth and can reduce heating costs by 40% while it is inexpensive to produce”.

his project encases the Pushkinsky Theatre in a glass “jewel” box.The design expands the footprint of the theatre inside a class volume and allows many of the functions of a typical lobby to be opened up to the gallery space which surrounds the original theatre. This gallery directs the social experience of the theatre outward, deepening its connection to the site and expanding its role in the life of Pushkin Square. “The Pushkinsky Jewel’s grand Walk-around Gallery directly links the cinema to the landmark square‘s urban fabric, allowing the city of Moscow to inscribe its visions,” described Joseph Sung. “The visual link between the Pushkinsky Cinema and the Pushkin Square is achieved through the glass curtain walls/ceiling using DuPont™ SentryGlas® structural interlayer. By enclosing the balcony space currently exposed, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of the square, of its historic surrounding mini-park and monument in any kind of weather. DuPont™ SentryGlas® structural interlayers were chosen, among others, due to their capability to protect against wind, weather and impact. By utilizing coated low-E glass, we increase the building overall energy efficiency – it can assist in engineering with more effective thermal insulation and by controlling the transmission of UV radiation. DuPont™ SentryGlas®, which offers long-term durability even when edges are exposed to weather and is less susceptible to moisture intrusion so remains free from clouding even after years of service, makes our specification choice ideal.”

Completely plastered! From an eye catching cornice to a stunning centrepiece, we have historically had the desire to incorporate ornate plasterwork features into our homes. The team of craftsmen from West Yorkshire-based Ornate Interiors, founded in 1989, have helped to restore many of our most prized architectural landmarks and prestigious domestic dwellings.
T
he origins of the word ‘plaster’ date back to the Greek civilisation and means ‘to daub on’. Still clearly very much a practical process used to preserve and protect the interior and exterior of buildings, fibrous moulding techniques have transformed plastering into the realm of the aesthetic. Around the time of King John in the 13th Century wealthy households started to commission architectural decoration in plaster. Ornate features were incorporated using wooden and metal tools on the moist plaster. Paint and gild were then added to highlight their status within a room. The technique of fibrous plastering came

into existence during the Victorian era and involved strengthening the plasterwork using hessian and lathes which allowed the design to be cast in a workshop and transported to the site of the works for fitting. Fibrous plastering Traditional fibrous plastering mouldings involve the use of gypsum, a sedimentary mineral rock distributed widely across the globe. In its raw state it’s a very soft substance that is made into plaster by heating it to 150ºC and then grinding it into a powder. One major issue that Ornate Interiors and other specialist plastering firms come across is the presence of dry rot at the back of plasterwork. “It is a problem that we come across

regularly and is usually not evident until we start on site,” explained Iain Clifford, a Director of Ornate Interiors. “Once we remove the damaged area of plasterwork and find dry rot in the timbers at the back of the mouldings or in the laths our work must then be put on hold until the area has been treated.” Another key problem that is frequently encountered is that of previously ‘botched’ repairs. “Previous inappropriate repairs are a common issue as many repairs have been carried out with more modern cementitious materials and are generally hard to remove without causing further damage to the existing plasterwork,” added Iain. t

Floors, Walls & Ceilings Stunning centrepieces that highlight Park Hall’s chandeliers were restored
Sympathetic materials The dilemma of whether to repair or replace is one faced by many period and listed property homeowners. In buildings of historical interest it is better to preserve the plasterwork to prevent further deterioration as opposed to restoring or replacing. It is acceptable to replace mouldings when it is a health and safety risk. “Mouldings are also reproduced to match the existing to create the original design of the period,” described Iain, “this usually follows the removal of layers of paint and the production of clay models which leads to the manufacture of new rubber moulds.” Great care should be taken when carrying out basic repairs to your fibrous plasterwork as Iain confirmed. “Basic repairs are usually carried out by hand using sympathetic materials. The correct material can be determined by having the existing analysed. Hand repairs require knowledge of the background, the existing

materials, how to work with the material (i.e. setting times) and an eye for detail for seamlessly blending in to the existing, be it plain or decorative, so the finished repair isn’t noticeable when painted.” Aesthetic appeal Other basic repair work should be regularly carried out during the restoration of a period property undergoing a modernisation programme to meet current legislation ie the installation of conduits for new electrics, plumbing, broadband. It’s clear that the care taken in restoring decorative plasterwork within any home will dramatically improve the aesthetic appeal of the environment and reflect well on the diligence and attention to detail of the homeowner. Firms like Ornate Interiors will ensure that those features remain safe, sound and stunning for generations to come. www.ornateinteriors.co.uk
The dilemma of whether to repair or replace is one faced by many period and listed property homeowners
One of Ornate Interiors’ recent projects, Park Hall, a grade II* listed mansion situated south of Sheffield and built in 1650 by the Chandos Pole family during the early turmoil of the Cromwell era, is a spectacular example of what can be achieved with expertise and a lot of loving care.
S
et in ten acres of private grounds in Spinkhill, Park Hall was until recently a hotel frequented by the likes of the Beatles and Cliff Richard as well as featuring as the backdrop in an episode of TV detective drama Poirot. Ornate Interiors set to work on the creation of a large number of decorative mouldings within their Pudsey workshop before transporting them south for the weeklong installation process. Owners Trevor and Keely Wragg have overseen a comprehensive renovation of a number of spectacular cornices, centrepieces, ceilings, corbels and niches. “It’s a long process but with projects such as this you have to use the skills and the attention to detail offered by craftsmen,” explained Trevor who knows a fair bit about the trade as MD of a Rotherham construction firm. “The second floor ceiling had fallen into bad disrepair and was leaking. We wanted to keep the feature patterned 18th century style consistent throughout and restore the cornicing. The lounge also required attention where we had installed three stunning centrepieces that beautifully highlight the chandeliers. Motifs to the ceiling corners and door areas were also incorporated.” The ceiling within the sitting room was another area of focus with a feature patterned ceiling put in place that matched up with other parts of the house. An impressive large niche was also positioned within the entrance hall.

Dural UK Ltd specified for tiling project on a house in Oldham, Manchester Flooring Accessories Specialist Dural UK Ltd were chosen by Phil Hobson Tiling on a tiling refurbishment project on a house in Oldham, Manchester. The client wanted the tiling replacing on their balcony patio but it soon became clear that it was not going to be as simple as that. This particular patio had been neglected for years and on close inspection it became clear that not only did the tiles need replacing but also the base on which it was laid. The original tiles were laid on a sand and cement mix on top of asphalt. Over time cracked grout lines allowed water penetration, which froze in winter forcing the patio to break up. The asphalt on which the sand and cement screed were laid had provided the wooden substrate structure beneath with excellent protection from the elements so it was decided that this would stay and a solution would be found to rebuild the patio on top of it. Professional tiller Phil Hobson’s solution was to use the Dural CI Matting decoupling membrane to remove the stress from the substrate. He also used adhesives from Mapei to bond the CI Matting to the substrate and a flexible adhesive and grout combination to fix the new tiles onto the surface. To prevent any further water penetration the edges of the membranes were sealed using a waterproof mastic compound from Mapei. Dural movement joints were used to make the patio durable and the surrounding steps were given Dural Step edges for extra protection and grip. Phil Hobson said, “The knowledge and expertise we get from Gerard Caygill and his team at Dural make working with them very easy. The recent modifications they have made to their CI Matting have made it a much better product. We will continue to work with Dural because they have the product solutions we need and their professional and personal approach all contribute to excellent value for money”. Crown paints make the grade at Shrewsbury College A partnership approach between Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology and Crown Paints has seen colour come to life across the Shropshire education facility.
T
he Crown Paints Colour Service team has worked with the College’s students and staff to create a bright and inspiring centre, creating a welcoming and appealing environment to staff, students and visitors alike. Crown Trade’s Timonox Flame Retardant Coatings system and Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt have been used throughout the College – creating a safe and durable finish on campus. More than 30 different colour schemes have been introduced using both systems. The project began as a repaint of the reception and corridors in the main building. From there, the partnership has developed and work is now being carried out within classrooms and corridor areas of the College’s main building on London Road and the neighbouring new Technology Building. Creating identity Jemma Saunders, Crown Paint’s Colour Consultant, visited the College and after a careful review of the facilities helped identify a series of schemes that would suit - with a brief to create a stimulating, vibrant environment. Her concepts, communicated in face-to-face consultations and with Computer Generated Imagery, were then put to the students on feedback forms, and the favourite schemes were selected.
Each area of the College now has an individual look for each of the subject areas taught on-site, helping to create important identities across the facility. Dean Howe, Estates Supervisor at Shrewsbury College, said, “The colours Jemma provided were fantastic and they are really what we were looking for in terms of creating the right environment and atmosphere. We wanted to appeal to the students, motivate, stimulate and be vibrant – and Crown Paints has supplied us with colours that do just that.” Colour psychology Crown Paints continues to lead the way in colour forecasting and the Colour Service is designed to bring to life projects and share the company’s expertise with clients to ensure the best possible outcome for projects. “Colour psychology plays an important role in the creation of an ideal environment in the education sector and our experts bring to life ideas that make a positive impact,” said Vernon Kinrade, Crown Paints’ Specification Sector Support Manager. “This project showed how Crown Paints’ Colour Service can help signpost clients to certain ideas and concepts and help them make informed choices. Aside
from colour, it is important that high quality paint is selected to ensure a longer-lasting result, and the school’s specification of Crown Trade Timonox and Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt ensures a fit-for-purpose system has been achieved at the College.” Reduces environmental impact As part of the specification process, Crown Paints’ Sustainable Smart Maintenance programme has been introduced on site, overseen by Crown Paints’ Technical Specification Consultant Bob Brankin. Streamlining asset management programmes, Sustainable Smart Maintenance enables maintenance budgets to be optimised, with intervals between applications extended by the carefully tailored specification of Crown Paints’ products – based on an analysis of the environment and site surveys. This personal approach – overseen by Crown Paints specification team – ensures paints are specified which represent Best Value. As well as reducing whole life costs, Sustainable Smart Maintenance reduces environmental impact – by driving forward reductions in the amount of paint needed in the long-term, through extended maintenance cycles. info@crowntrade.co.uk

PTH’s business graduate honoured
K
enny Macfarlane received the ‘Rising Star’ award for his contribution to the success of Precision Timber Handrails (PTH), a business unit of Stoke-on-Trent woodworking firm Clive Durose, which manufactures and installs bespoke, timber handrails for commercial and residential environments. The 24-year-old, who works at Clive Durose through the Staffordshire University Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), was presented with the top honour at a glittering awards dinner, hosted by the BBC’s Jeremy Vine at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane. Since starting his career in July 2009 with a visit to a Premier League footballer’s home to train in on-site surveying and measurement , Kenny has gone on to play a key role in helping grow the PTH business unit into a successful part of Clive Durose’s product and service portfolio. Management skills Kenny’s design and 3D CAD skills have made a real difference to the business, where his talent and commitment have also helped him develop his management skills. As the KTP placement comes to an end, Kenny will take up a new role as PTH Business Manager with a team of five people. His experiences will now help shape the future development of fresh talent in the business, with his new position enabling him to supervise a graduate working on a new initiative, due to be introduced to help the business develop its manufacturing

Kenny is also set to achieve his MSC in Advanced Technologies, a qualification achieved as part of his KTP. Enthusiasm and motivation “I am immensely proud of Kenny’s achievement. He is a self-motivated individual and has been a pleasure to work with,” said Clive Durose, the MD of Clive Durose. “It makes my role far more enjoyable to work with people who are enthusiastic. The award is also recognition for all the people who have contributed to the success of the PTH business overall.”
Partnership is an extremely valuable scheme for business and graduates,” added Clive. “It brings together the experience of business managers, a wealth of academic support and graduates who benefit from exciting commercial projects. A well-run KTP benefits all parties involved and this sort of scheme should remain high on the Government’s business support agenda.” After much celebration following the award ceremony, Kenny has his feet firmly back on the ground again and is busy carrying out surveys and managing a number of high value contracts.
Clive joined forces with Staffordshire University to recruit two graduates through the KTP programme, with Kenny introduced to develop PTH, and Ellie Moss to lead ID Modern Stairparts, which manufactures inspirational and contemporary new designs for staircases. Both businesses are now major contributors to the company.
“I can’t believe it. Receiving this award in the company of some of the UK’s big names in construction was quite a shock,” said Kenny. “I work for a great company and have been given a great chance to develop my career. Staffordshire University has been so supportive and my colleagues have helped PTH deliver great products and service. I am so grateful to everyone for their help, I couldn’t have done it all on my own.”

A crucial factor on this project was compliance with Skanska’s environmental policy. “The Skanska Colour Palette describes our Journey to Deep Green™. Celotex keeps up the heat To ensure that the University of Bedfordshire’s new Campus Centre in Luton, part of a £140m redevelopment of University facilities, had the best thermal performance at the greatest value, Celotex CW4000 was chosen. 2,500m² of Celotex CW4000 insulation boards were installed throughout the cavity walling. The first PIR (polyisocyanurate) insulation to achieve an A+ rating for its thermal efficiency, foilfaced Celotex CW4000 has a lambda value of 0.022W/mK. Manufactured at a board size of 1,200 mm x 450 mm to fit easily between cavity wall ties and with excellent dimensional stability, Celotex CW4000 proves simple to install.
“In the initial stages we believed that a metal tile would be far more practical as a solution for the corridors,” commented Derek Bennett of Clark & Fenn Skanska. “However, due to restrictions in void depth, and the heavily serviced corridors, with the assistance of Rockfon, Clark & Fenn Skanska together with the Architects developed a very cost effective solution using Rockfon Medicare plank. This solution allowed Skanska to delay installing tiles until the commissioning stages. This reduced the
actual damage that can occur on projects of this nature, thereby reducing any unnecessary waste.” Rockfon’s MediCare range has been specified in standard tile format for the rooms, and planks for the 13 miles of corridors, where it was essential the ceilings could provide ease of access and be easy to demount and install. The Rockfon MediCare range offers resistance to ubiquitous bacteria and fungi, in particular Staphylococcus Aureus including its Methicillin resistant strain (MRSA), making it fully compliant with HTM 60 and an ideal choice for the new hospitals. info@rockfon.co.uk

Floors, Walls & Ceilings ‘Balanced Choice’ proves Tarkett’s sustainability A recent seminar sponsored by Tarkett brought together specifiers, designers and developers to discuss sustainability and the environment, with a special focus on resilient flooring. Topics included the guidelines and regulations regarding installation, waste management and recyclability and how they are managed in major public projects today. Pete Thomas of the Flooring Sustainability Partnership examined current and future European legislation and UK government policy, including the introduction of CE marking for all construction products from 2013.The voluntary scheme ‘VinylPlus’ includes a commitment to annually recycle 100,000 tonnes of vinyl that requires ‘innovative approaches’, such as end-of-life flooring. As a full member of the scheme, Tarkett is actively involved in researching and developing new methods for recycling all types of flooring.
Roger Frost, Director and General Manager for Balfour Beatty in the Midlands, used his experiences on the new Birmingham Hospital project to explain how the use of closed-loop recycling and off-site construction can help achieve environmental targets.Twelve rooms were successfully trialled with Tarkett’s closed-loop scheme, whereby flooring offcuts were reprocessed into the backing for new safety flooring, which was then returned to site for installation, thus proving to the industry that it can be done.

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation Icynene’s soft foam saves hard cash Icynene’s water blown insulation offers dramatic energy savings, enables better indoor air quality and gives off no harmful emissions. Icynene has recently been used to insulate the new 12 en-suite bed and communal area (total area 400m²) of The Manse nursing home in Lancashire. “The building holds the heat at a constant 23oC regardless of weather conditions,” explained Les Ansell, owner of The Manse. “If the wind is blowing it has no effect on performance and doesn’t put any extra load on the heating. The radiators were reduced in size by 40% and when they are not on, the building is still warm, draft free and comfortable. Installing Icynene insulation has resulted into substantially lower fuel bills. The new build is 23% by volume of the
new and old buildings combined, yet it accounts for only 7.3% of the total gas used.” Founded in 1986, Icynene has participated in over 300,000 health, environmental and energy efficient building projects across the world including North America, Europe, Japan, and China. Applied as a liquid, Icynene expands to 100 times its volume in seconds to fill every crack and crevice while remaining flexible so that the integrity of the building envelope seal remains intact. Icynene is
also extremely popular with designers as it enables them to explore geometry and space without compromising performance. For further information or if you would like information on becoming an Icynene installer, please contact Simon Falkner-Lee at Icynene now! inquiriesuk@icynene.com

Klober EasyLumen blends modern with traditional Lumen Conservation rooflight has been made to replicate a Form: easy choice The traditional Victorian design, which is unobtrusive and sympathetic Contractors Steadfast Roofing were so impressed with Solar-Line Easy-Form flashing at a Klober training day that they chose it for use on a block of 28 new apartments. Bugler Developments project in Greenford entailed fixing of solar PV panels and Easy-Form was used to seal slates where they were cut around fixing brackets. Easy-Form is ideal for this purpose as, unlike traditional flashings, it can be stretched by up to 60%, making it easier to use and more versatile. It can be used with the deepest profile tiles on pitches of 10° or more and is available in four standard colours.

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation Schöck enhances customer service Since its introduction to the UK in 2006 the Schöck Isokorb® range of thermal break solutions quickly established itself here as market leader, although holding pole position in the rest of Europe for twenty years prior did not guarantee success in an increasingly demanding UK construction sector. Certainly the legacy of proven high technical performance values helped, along with a focused marketing policy. However, one of the most significant factors has been the attention given to providing specifiers, engineers and contractors with an unrivalled level of design and technical support. The engineers in the technical team are primarily project-orientated, working with clients on specific day-to-day job related issues. However, there was scope for a broader more ‘educative’ approach, placing the emphasis more on the general principles of thermal break issues and good design practice. As a result, a new Product
Engineer role has been created to which Martin Ernst, BEng, University of Applied Sciences Munich, has been appointed.
Vinylit: always in stock
FLOORMATE 300-A in Passivhaus milestone
Vinylit, the specialist cladding manufacturers, have been specified over many years by Local Authorities and Housing Associations for their Vinytherm Stonechip cladding system. This provides an easy to install, cost efficient and well proven solution for RMI projects, especially where the outer skin is failing, typically render, wood, or metal in the case of BISF homes. To meet the growing demand for Stonechip cladding for remedial work, the company now holds stock at its Burnley premises of a selected range of preferred colour finishes, whereas previously product was produced to order. Vinylit carries a 30-year guarantee and has BBA certification. info@vinylit.co.uk 068
The UK’s first rural affordable housing accredited Passivhaus scheme is complete, and the housing association behind the project has cited below-slab insulation as key to achieving its very high levels of energy efficiency. The scheme in Wimbish, Essex, features Dow Building Solutions’ FLOORMATE 300-A STYROFOAM insulation as a continuous layer beneath the concrete floor slabs to help prevent thermal bridging. FLOORMATE 300-A is available in a range of thicknesses: 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, 125mm and 150mm, and has a design load of 130 kN/m2.The material is manufactured using CO2 as a blowing agent giving it a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than five. FKLMAIL@dow.com 066
Previously a member of the Schöck technical team, Martin observes “It is very important that anyone involved with the thermal break design process should be looking for both a functional structural solution, and one which provides the best thermal performance. Getting across the design principles involved at an early stage helps to rule out unworkable or inefficient solutions.”
One of Martin’s immediate priorities is to develop a series of Technical Seminars, which cover structural topics and thermal break design principles as they affect the internal structure of a building and compliance with Part L. In addition he will be looking to ensure that all planning offices are supported with the latest calculation software, with regular updates on new products and the latest technical information. design@schoeck.co.uk

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation Kingspan’s learning curve! The contemporary curved profile of the Kingspan Curvewall architectural wall panel is making an impact at new student halls of residence in Dundee, providing a striking silver finish and adding to the accommodation’s comfort and safety. Opal 1, the £20.8m, 498-bedroom design and build development by Ocon Construction at the University of Abertay Dundee, has been clad with 2,000m² of Kingspan Curvewall in Spectrum Silver, which combines an aesthetically pleasing wall solution with all the performance benefits of an insulated panel system. Certified ‘ECOsafe’, the panels can achieve a Green Guide ‘A+’ rating for BREEAM. They have a non-deleterious, environmentally sustainable, PIR core with zero ODP, which, though light in weight, can provide lifetime insulation continuity and airtightness of less than 5m3/hr/m². Importantly for multiple occupation accommodation, Kingspan Curvewall panels are FIREsafe approved by the Loss
Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) to LPS 1181 Grade EXT-B; and panel facings, both internal and external, are Class 0 in accordance with Building Regulations. The panels also help to reduce passage of sound having a predicted single-figure weighted sound reduction Rw = 24dB. Kingspan Curvewall is available in a range of solid and metallic colours and is suitable for both horizontal and vertical applications. The panels integrate easily with doors, windows, glazing, louvres and traditional construction materials; and because the pre-engineered system offers a single component, single fix installation, considerable construction benefits can be gained through a greatly accelerated build time and removal of the wall envelope from the critical path.

Uponor takes plumbing to new heights Plumbing specialist Uponor has unveiled a new professional fitting system that will take plumbing to new levels thanks to its ‘Tool Inside’ technology and high pressure joint system. The RTM, or Ring Tension Memory, system eliminates the need for tools to make quick, safe and professional joints and is the latest major launch for the company which has continued to produce industry-leading innovative plumbing solutions. Built-in visual and audible indicators mean installers can never be in any doubt that the joint has been made securely and the constant two tonnes of pressure applied by the connecting device means the joint will never be weakened or disconnected.
Simple and easy to use, the RTM device means making a joint is as straightforward as inserting a length of cut and calibrated pipe into the connector. RTM works in tandem with Uponor’s existing multi layer composite pipe which offers numerable benefits over copper including speed and ease of installation, price stability, joint security as well as requiring fewer joints eliminating the need for hot works and is not prone to theft as copper is. enquiries.uk@uponor.com 089
“RTM is a simple yet highly effective new way of installing plumbing systems and signifies a huge step forward for the industry,” explains Uponor plumbing applications manager, Mark Dowdeswell. “The secret to the joint’s security lies in the high tension metal ring inside the device. Constructed from high carbon steel, the spring-like ring’s memory effect ensures watertightness and its constant and consistent pressure acts as the tool itself.”

Low energy PIV from Greenwood Airvac
The Housing Minister Grant Shapps has recently unveiled The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment’s “Prince’s House” at the Building Research Establishment,Watford. This eco house doesn’t rely on gadgets or hi-tech products to make it green - rather its carbon savings are built into its innovative design systems which create a highly energy efficient thermal shell. A Clearview Woodburning stove has been chosen as the preferred heating method which is expected to dramatically reducing heating costs. The Foundation’s Hank Dittmar explained, “We hope the Prince’s House innovative eco design will dispel the myth that eco-homes have to be high-tech.”
Centair PIV, the newest low cost continuous whole house ventilation solution from Greenwood Airvac, helps ensure tenants have a comfortable and healthy life indoors, whilst also reducing carbon emissions in SAP.Ventilating every room from a single point and utilising free solar generated heat created within the loft space to help lower fuel bills, Centair PIV pushes warmer air from loft spaces into the home to enable tenants to turn down their heating thermostat, saving energy and money. By forcing contaminated air containing allergens and VOCs out of the building and replacing it with freshly filtered air, the Centair PIV also helps eradicate mould and condensation problems. info@greenwood.co.uk 090

Avoid limescale with Hydropath With rising fuel prices, more and more people are considering micro-generation technologies as an alternative to ‘conventional’ energy. But it’s still important for people in a hard water area to remember that whenever water is heated, there is a risk of limescale build up. Helping to maintain a limescale free system is the Hydroflow HS38, a patented water conditioning system by Hydropath Ltd.The HS38 prevents the build up of all limescale deposits, by emitting randomly varying electric signals throughout the system resulting in the reduction of the effects of hard water, which can lead to expensive repairs and maintenance of appliances and high energy bills. sales@hydropath.com 093

Sustainability and resource efficiency are a growing environmental concern across the world. Many organisations are striving to reduce their environmental impact and in the process save money by using less energy and natural resources. An area that organisations often over-look when assessing their environmental impact is the washroom, which accounts for around 65% of water use in many businesses. So what consideration can be made to reduce water usage in the washroom? Whilst there are numerous ways to save water, one consideration should be the choice of soap. Independent research, commissioned by Deb, has shown that when using foam soap, people use 16% less water than when using liquid soap.Water savings can be increased further by adopting Deb’s recommended foam soap hand washing technique – dispense, lather, tap on, rinse. By switching to this method people could use up to 45% less water compared with liquid soap.

Think wedi for walk–in showers The increasing demand for walk-in showers requires high performance products, guaranteeing water tightness for walls and floors. The unique HCFC free rigid blue core of the wedi building board is reinforced on both sides with strong glass fibre matting coated with a specialist synthetic polymer resin mortar. It is totally waterproof, requires no additional moisture barrier, is completely dimensionally stable and inert, (which means it doesn’t warp, rot or twist), lightweight and a great thermal insulator; there is no need to even consider tiling onto plaster, plasterboard, ‘moisture resistant’ plasterboard, chipboard, MDF, wood, plywood or cement particle board. And wedi offers much more than just tile backing boards! sales@wedi.co.uk 113

Deb’s washroom solution saves water, time and money
As less water is required for rinsing, there are also savings to be made in energy use and CO2 emissions. Additionally, as foam soap is eight times more spreadable than the lotion soap, less product is used. Interestingly, using less product does not equate to less efficacy; research shows that there is no significant difference in the cleaning ability between 0.7ml of Deb foam soap compared to 1.1ml of the lotion soap, confirming that the same efficacy is delivered from foam with less product. Are there any other benefits to using a foam soap? Because chemicals are not needed to thicken the soap (the lather is created by adding air) foam soaps biodegrade more easily. Finally, using a foam hand wash translates to more washes in the same amount of packaging – you get a third more washes meaning that the cartridge has to be replaced less often, saving time and money.

Balcony Systems take care of the views Castleoak, a leading care sector development and construction company, specified clear glass Juliette balconies from Balcony Systems for its latest care project to make the most of magnificent lakeside views in South Lanarkshire. Stylish Juliette balconies with aluminium handrails finished in Royal Chrome met the architect’s precise balustrading specification for French Doors in 20 remodelled extra care apartments at The Retreat, Auchlochan Retirement Village near Lesmahagow, south of Glasgow. It is the first time Balcony Systems has worked with Castleoak, whose project in Scotland was its thirteenth for MHA, one of the UK’s leading not-for-profit care providers. Castleoak Project Surveyor Sean Coyle said the Balcony Systems’ product was chosen as it matched the architect’s design and allowed light into the property, whilst retaining unrestricted views across the lake and landscaped grounds. “The Juliette balcony system worked on our building extremely well. Auchlochan was the first project where we used the Balcony Systems product and after Balcony provided a quotation during
the estimating process, it was a natural progression to follow this through to an order,” said Sean. “Working with Balcony Systems was straightforward. All of the technical questions were quickly resolved and telephone calls returned immediately.” Specialising in sophisticated balustrading solutions, Balcony Systems supplies Juliette balconies as single units or in bulk delivery for larger housing schemes and residential developments. Handrail finishes are offered in white, silver, bronze or Royal Chrome. Doors & Windows
PDS step back to the 17th Century Performance Doorset Solutions (PDS) have recently completed a renovation project alongside Yorkshire Timber Merchants and building contractors Made Contracts at the historic location of 17th Century Clegg Hall Mills on the Rochdale canal. It was essential that the renovated building kept to the style and retained features of the original structure but incorporated modern functionality, a brief which many manufacturers would be unable to meet! The building required a mixture of glazing sizes and designs throughout. A sample window was created and sent to the contractor and the heritage council to check that the window will not alter the traditional aspects of the building; fully meeting the brief led to PDS’s instruction to produce over 200 bespoke made to measure factory finished timber windows. PDS manufacture a wide range of timber windows all of which can be altered to
meet most bespoke orders. In this case the windows featured a composite bonding bar, high performance security hardware, and single glazing, which was a vital requirement for the demanding building regulations. Each individual window was factory finished in a heritage green high build protective coating on the outside, with white on the inside. Factory finished windows provided a significant advantage in their ease of fitting, as many of the windows needed to be installed from scaffolding platforms erected in the canal. The project was completed successfully with the windows ensuring that the building complied with heritage standards. The end result is a modern block
of flats which maintains the appearance of an attractive 17th Century structure. sales@pdsdoorsets.co.uk

As the search to find the 2011 UK Worker of the Year (UKWOTY) continues, competitions and opinion pieces on Facebook and the UKWOTY blog has unearthed the British workforce’s biggest bugbears about work colleagues. Presenting sponsor Dickies asked the question on the UK Worker of the Year blog, “What most annoys you about your co-workers?” Overall, the three most common themes were bad habits involving food, people who don’t do what they’re supposed to e.g. leaving the phone ringing for someone else to pick up or simply not doing their fair share of work, and general politeness eg people who don’t thank others for doing something. gary@chicanemarketing.co.uk 160

But we’ll still find plenty of time to pack out the October issue with some great features! Sustainability in Development visits Radian, a housing association operating in Southeast England, who won a 2011 Ashden Award for their huge energy-efficiency retro-fitting project, and Design & Desire takes us to London Metropolitan University. Caroline Richards from Devereux Architects, our Voice of the Industry, talks about her experiences of setting up a regional office for the international architectural practice and shares some advice on how to establish a new network to capitalise on opportunities, whilst in Legal & Business, Jane Simpson explains what ‘inclusion’ means, what the law requires, and how you can ensure that your premises are as accessible as possible. And if none of the above sparks your interest – tell us what does, and we’ll see what we can do! Regards,
Juliet
