Greenhouse Construction of the Brighton Waste House is now complete and the ‘living experiment’ is open for research and learning
Waste house at Brighton’s disposal Architect Duncan Baker-Brown and the University of Brighton’s Faculty of Art have undertaken a new ‘living experiment’ in sustainable building. The Brighton Waste House is an on-going project involving students of the University, Brighton & Hove City Council and wide ranging support from industry and the community, and is designed to explore ways in which to build as ecologically as possible.

The timber framed structure is made largely of timber off-cuts with salvaged ply and is insulated in a variety of ways, from donated KoolthermK15 boards to internal wall ‘cassettes’ filled with old VHS tapes, compact disc cases and discarded wallpaper! Meanwhile, Gatwick Airport donated over 20,000 used toothbrushes provided in Business and First Class, now packed into the Waste House wall cavities.

requirements for a high-performance breather membrane are embodied in DuPont Tyvek which is unique in the market because of its high-quality single layer construction. DuPont Tyvek is naturally vapour open but also wind and water-tight due to its composition of millions of micro fibres bonded together to make a “maze” that’s impermeable to air and moisture but which allows water vapour to pass through its natural pores.
Proven reliability Lightweight yet robust, DuPont Tyvek is easy to install to exterior walls and roofs and offers long term proven reliability and durability. Designed to protect the building envelope against the effects of weather and moisture, the membranes also offer optimal air-tightness and can help to improve the thermal performance and energy-efficiency, as well as the interior climatic stability and comfort of a building. Also involved in this innovative project was leading ventilation manufacturer VentAxia who donated ventilation equipment. The Crawley-based firm was thrilled to supply a Sentinel Kinetic Plus Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) unit to Britain’s first house made almost entirely from thrown-away rubbish. As the structure is highly-insulated and airtight, a MVHR system was specified to provide ventilation and heating.Vent-Axia therefore donated a Sentinel Kinetic Plus and in the true spirit of the project, it is

Architect and Project Leader Duncan Baker-Brown of BBM Sustainable Design Ltd comments: “We were very happy to specify DuPont Tyvek Housewrap and DuPont Tyvek UV Facade for The Brighton Waste House, as the products guarantee the proper performance of our rather unusual walls made of reclaimed and surplus material from the construction industry, as well as from household waste. DuPont Tyvek Housewrap ensures that our carbon neutral building manages moisture sensibly, while DuPont Tyvek UV Facade forms a highly effective weather seal for the building, sitting just behind our unusual external rain screen, which is of course, also made of waste.” Mark Hill, DuPont Building Innovations, Sales Manager for UK and Ireland adds: “DuPont has been delighted to support this fascinating research and learning project with the donation of our advanced breather membranes for buildings, with two different types of DuPont Tyvek. This experimental and important build involves the community from industry experts and manufacturers to students and schoolchildren. The hut is a stronghold in a stunningly isolated landscape. It marks a major milestone for the national network of refuges for trekkers as it is their 500th, and most remote, cabin. The Norwegian Trekkers Association has a long history of providing shelter for those exploring Norway’s great natural beauty, and Rabothytta will join the ranks of some of the most secluded and beautiful hideouts in the country.

The architects needed to create a structure that the wind could easily move around
For the designers, Norwegian architects Jarmund/Vigsnæs, it was essential to create a cabin that mimicked the natural landscape, bringing the outdoors in, and creating a design that was sympathetic to its natural surroundings. One of the great advantages of Kebony is that it will over time adopt similar traits to the stony surrounds of the cabin as it ages, developing a silvery patina akin to the rocky terrain in which it sits. This aesthetic blending was central to the project, not only to reduce the impact of the building on an otherwise untouched landscape, but to allow trekkers to feel as close to

nature as possible whilst seeking refuge. However, designing for such a harsh environment meant safety and durability were paramount. First and foremost the architects needed to create a structure that the wind could easily move around, which meant no protrusions, but rather a sleek self-contained building. Most importantly of all it would need to be built
with materials that would stand up to the elements. Kebony, being a real wood with enhanced cell structure, is durable and strong with exceptionally low-maintenance material, even in extreme climates like this, and therefore provided the perfect blend of all these qualities. Building in the back country of Norway was a great challenge to those working on Rabothytta, inaccessible by road they needed lightweight materials that could be helicoptered to the site. Kebony ticked all the boxes, providing a transportable, durable, and natural material that would withstand the test of a harsh Norwegian winter and still retain its beautiful appearance.
Improved durability
One of the great advantages of Kebony is that it will over time adopt similar traits to the stony surrounds of the cabin
12
The many advantageous properties of Kebony stem directly from its production. The wood is formed by a revolutionary environmentally friendly process wherein sustainably-sourced wood species are impregnated with a liquid mixture based on furfuryl alcohol, produced from agricultural crop waste. With the addition of heat the furfuryl polymer is permanently grafted into the wood cell wall resulting in greatly improved durability and dimensional stability making the wood strong and resistant to biological decay and harsh weather conditions without the need for expensive and environmentally-damaging chemical treatments. The resulting product is safe, natural and has high resistance against fungi and other microorganisms. It is the complex Kebony process, a product

architects who are sensitive to the ecological pressures of the day, but who are unprepared to compromise on looks and finish. As attempts to create new sustainable materials for the construction industry flourish, Kebony leads the way and new applications for their wood are being pioneered around the world. From Nordic lamps to ‘Spine’ furniture concepts, involving a number of interlocking parts to form skeletal benches, Kebony has proved versatile and ergonomic, proving its worth in the home. Certainly if it can withstand the demands of a cruel Norwegian winter it can handle the sticky hands, muddy boots, and stomping feet of family life. In the home, in the garden, on an outback mountainside, this wood proves its mettle. Rabothytta will join the ranks of some of the most secluded and beautiful hideouts in the country
sourced only from sustainably managed forests and all suppliers hold certificates. Durability has been the lynchpin of Kebony’s pioneering, patented technology. But this product, with its pleasing finish and evolving patina is also a thing of beauty. With aesthetic attributes to complement its practicality, Kebony is perfect for both indoor and outdoor
spaces. The wood makes excellent flooring, window panes, decking and can be used in the creation of some fine furniture, drawing the outside in just as it did at Rabothytta. The creators of Kebony strive to maintain a bespoke element to the service they offer, providing a product which will meet the requirements of its environment, and this is truly reflected in the diversity of the projects they have undertaken. With a material as timeless and versatile as wood, their product has applications for both the traditional and the avant-garde. Whilst it can be seen cladding schools or residential homes, it has also been the central material in creating the stunning KREOD architectural sculpture currently situated on London’s Greenwich Peninsula.
Material of choice
Kebony ages with its environment without suffering from rot or warping
The selection of sustainable materials is paramount to the ensuing sustainability of any building. Treated timber has the ability to bypass the need for maintenance, painting or varnishing, meaning that it is as ergonomically sound as it is environmentally and it is therefore unsurprising that it is fast becoming the choice of many across the construction industry. What we can learn from the proliferation of new technologies and methods is that the future of timber construction is filled with the potential to incorporate innovative and imaginative ways to meet demands for sustainability in building. The building material supplier, Kebony, is providing a world of potential for

Considerations for specifying wood in harsh environments • Choose a wood that is as hard as possible. Softwoods will deteriorate over time or absorb water. • Low maintenance woods are more cost effective in the long run. A wood that does not require extensive treatment such as varnishing and painting will not only be cheaper and easier to maintain, but will also perform better. • Some treated timber products, like Kebony, have good resistance against fungi, rot and other wood destroying microorganisms as they are chemically restructured to be protected against these. • Pick a timber product with good stability. In the case of Kebony for example, swelling and shrinkage are reduced by 40-60% as compared with the parent wood. • Wood that contains no toxins or harmful impregnation substances, like Kebony, will ultimately be safer as these tend to leak out over time. • Try to choose a wood that is transparently sourced and environmentally friendly. Kebony is sourced from sustainably managed forests and all suppliers hold certificates.

Voice of the Industry
Protecting green spaces Deric Newman, Sales Manager at Glendale Civic Trees, discusses the importance of green spaces in high street regeneration following the Mayor of London’s Action for High Streets report.
T
he Mayor of London’s Action for High Streets report sets out the importance of making London’s high streets even better places to visit, live and do business in. In the report, the Mayor makes a worthwhile case for investment into our high streets and announces that £9m will be made available in the autumn for town centre improvement grants. High streets play a vital role in sustaining our economy and their regeneration could accommodate new homes and jobs. However, when policymakers are deciding how to invest public resources, it’s important that they do not overlook the importance of green spaces and urban tree planting. In a poll carried out by environmental charity Groundwork, nine out of 10 adults said green spaces are an important factor in making somewhere a good place to live or work, so in line with the Mayor’s report the investment in our green spaces really is a no-brainer. However, it is estimated that only 14% of people in England have access to trees or woodlands within 500
metres of their home. Similarly, a report by Natural England found that only 10% of children played in woodlands, compared to 40% of their parents’ generation. Given the tangible benefits of access to green space, these are things that need to be addressed.
Health and social So what are the benefits? There are many. Health benefits are at the forefront; The Woodland Trust believes the NHS could save £2.1b a year if everyone had access to green space, and the connection between “healthy woods and healthy lives” is one that needs to be recognised. According to the European Environment Agency, every 10% increase in green space is associated with a reduction in diseases equivalent to an increase of five years of life expectancy. A study in the journal of Environmental Science and Technology reports that living in an urban area with green spaces has a long-lasting, positive impact on people’s mental well-being. Researchers from the University of Exeter used data from 5000 households over 17 years and found that people living in greener areas reported
lower levels of mental distress and higher degrees of life satisfaction. Access to the natural environment can also encourage physical activity and active living, lowering the risk of obesity and the associated health implications. Other research has identified a link between lack of contact with rural areas and an increase in cases of allergies and asthma, and green space has been found to have a positive effect on people with dementia and autism. Green spaces create safe communities. They provide places for people to get to know and socialise with their neighbours, building the social glue that reduces crime, according to Groundwork. As a social platform, green spaces bring together people from different backgrounds, potentially bridging cultural and class divides that may exist. Friendships and a sense of community can be built through projects to improve the local environment, and other studies have highlighted a relationship between green spaces and people’s sense of belonging. There are economic and wider environmental benefits, too. In terms of the economy, greener cities attract more visitors, whose spending on shopping and leisure creates job opportunities. Environmentally, academic studies

Voice of the Industry increasingly point to the importance of green space in meeting the challenges of climate change. Green infrastructure, such as green roofs, can play a direct role in helping to reduce energy use and green routes encourage walking and cycling as an alternative to car travel. Aesthetically, the Mayor’s report emphasises the importance of a welcoming and attractive high street, something that can be improved by treescapes, a wellmaintained park, garden or green space. With this in mind, it’s important that investment is made not only into the development of green spaces, but also to their upkeep.
Positive steps Researchers agree that the evidence in support of the green space is sufficient for urban planners to factor in the benefits when designing new developments. Admittedly, crowded city centres and a resurgence of urban living make finding room for green spaces difficult and I would like to see more incentives for developing vacant lots or run down spaces into green areas. It’s pleasing to read The Greater London Authority environment team is coordinating the Mayor’s Street Tree Initiative and Pocket Parks Programme.

10,000 promised during the course of Boris Johnson’s second term in office. The RE:LEAF scheme benefits the whole of London as it not only improves the visual aesthetics of the city, but also offers its residents the chance to learn about and understand the growing process, while recognising the importance of trees in modern day society. With public resources often scarce, it’s crucial that schemes like these continue and are not overlooked. Our high streets are changing and they must adapt to new pressures and shifting habits, but it’s important that this is not to the detriment of the green space.
■
The Pocket Parks Programme is investing £2m into helping to establish small areas of green space on high streets, and by March 2015 the Mayor’s Street Tree Initiative will have spent £5.7m planting at least 20,000 trees. Glendale Civic Trees has also completed the planting of more than 350 trees for the Mayor of London’s RE:LEAF scheme. Using the latest handling, planting and maintenance techniques, specialists installed trees in streets, parks and residential areas across the London Borough of Southwark. The initiative aims to encourage the planting of more trees across London, while also protecting the city’s woodlands and wildlife. Restoration Sika supplied a range of concrete repair and protection systems to bring the entertainment venue back to its best
Stem the tide of concrete corrosion During its lifetime, every concrete building will be subjected to premature deterioration, unexpected and uncontrolled cracking caused by corrosion and severely compromised aesthetics. When refurbishing, restoring and re-strengthening ageing building stock to make it fit for the 21st century and beyond, global building product manufacturer Sika offers a market-leading range of building products and systems you can trust.

lthough a durable and robust building material, concrete can still be severely compromised when attacked by sulphates and chlorides. With so many structures built near to the coast and even in direct contact with sea water, proven high performance repair and protection systems are now a vital specification choice at refurbishment projects. It is imperative to establish the cause of the concrete degradation or steel reinforcement corrosion before repairs are carried out. Poor understanding of the cause of the problem can result in inappropriate repairs which will ultimately fail at significant cost. So, how can we repair, maintain and extend the life of the ageing buildings and structures on our coastlines in a cost effective, sustainable and reliable way? USE Architects has transformed Mentmore Terrace in London’s Hackney with a new residential building
Facing the future In one of the earliest major applications in the UK for DuPont Corian as a structural facade, architectural practice USE has created a distinctive new residential building in an area of London experiencing significant regeneration.

s evidence of both the revival of its Hackney neighbourhood and the attractions of this pioneering design, every apartment in the development was sold off plan long before the building was complete. Standing proud and pristine, in contemporary juxtaposition to the Victorian railway arches of London Fields, Mentmore Terrace makes an impressive addition to the local landscape – and has delighted its neighbours, according to the architect, by gently reflecting the light with its smooth, pale and elegant finish. Formed entirely from DuPont Corian high tech surface, which is fast becoming a favoured facade material for discerning developers, this high-performance weather screen promises to maintain its subtle and sophisticated beauty for the long term. Architect Jo Hagan, who has been keenly involved for many years in the regeneration of local neighbourhoods such as his own community of Hackney, describes the concept behind the project: “There is certainly an element of homage to the

Bauhaus in the overall design, and the facade and its relationship to the windows and balconies is the only element of decoration. The concept is inspired by the book Fahrenheit 451 by Raymond Bradbury and so we have used a 4.5.1. ratio for the various panels.” Jo says that he has thought about using Corian for exterior cladding for quite some time, as he has the material in his kitchen and has long admired its performance
Cladding and aesthetic qualities. However, it wasn’t until the opportunities presented by this project that the notion became a reality – partly because Jo co-owns the building (his practice has moved from an older building next door to new premises on the ground floor) and thus, by also being ‘the client’ he had considerably more freedom to innovate.
An abstract aesthetic “I’ve always wanted to cover a building in Corian,” explains Jo, “but it needed a leap of imagination as it has not been used in this way, on a larger scale, in this country before. By working with the 4.5.1 ratio this allowed for a certain economy while visually breaking up the mass of what is otherwise a very simple structure. The design is both an abstract aesthetic and yet practical in that it offers more variety to the vertical elements and makes a stronger pattern with the shadow gaps, while also having the appearance of a solid mass from afar.” The individual Corian panels that form the facade were fabricated and fitted with expert workmanship by specialists Urbana Exteriores from Spain, and have been installed using a Kiel fixing system to a Hilti frame. The structure also benefits from the installation of DuPont Tyvek UV Facade, a version of the renowned advanced breather membrane that has been created specifically to allow greater design freedom, reliable protection and enhanced energy performance for open-jointed facades. Indeed, sustainability has been a key

aspect of the design, which has been built to very high U-values. A heat exchange system recirculates through the building and grills have been routed out directly into the Corian panels to assist this process. “Today, architecture becomes radical through technology,” states Jo. “By using the skin of the building to retain heat, there is pure articulation thanks to the inventiveness of industry.”
Notable versatility Rather than opt for one of the bright whites within the sophisticated colour palette for Corian, Jo chose to go with a whisper of colour in the form of Private Grey, a discreet hue that transforms with the variable UK light, it has a subtle quality, which according to Jo Hagan, “can make the building appear to float.” 37 colours of Corian are recommended for facade applications, offering a refined choice for cladding design, which together the notable versatility of the material, allows for an inspiring vista of decorative effects. Completely homogenous and non-porous,
Corian is easy to clean and maintain, it is fire rated, resistant to graffiti, UV and climatic conditions – and should any damage occur – that material is repairable. Corian Exterior Cladding is compatible with a ‘secret’ fix undercut anchor system and its lightweight, workable properties mean that fabrication and fitting run smoothly both off and on site. Whether creating an apparently seamless monolithic look, puzzle-like patterns or engraved, textured and backlit effects, Corian offers a facade solution like no other. Corian is the solid surface with the broadest range of international certification for facade applications and has passed a series of fundamental tests for its application to the exterior of buildings. These include freeze/thaw cycling resistance, standards proving the material’s resistance to exterior environmental substances, and fire performance tests, and tests for abuse resistance. Further information about these tests and certificates are available on request from DuPont.

Legal & Business
Plan early to get ahead For owners of small and micro businesses, auto enrolment is looming large on the horizon, explains Morten Nilsson, CEO of NOW: Pensions.
T
he new legislation which began rolling out in October 2012 requires all employers to set up and contribute to a workplace pension scheme on behalf of their employees. So far only companies that employ more than 60 people have reached their staging date – the date they have to comply with the new rules and enrol their employees into a scheme but, by February 2018, every employer whether large or small will have had to navigate the auto enrolment maze. For business owners faced with the prospect of tackling auto enrolment, the sooner you think about it, the better as it is not without complexity. The Pensions Regulator will write and advise you of your staging date, but if you are unsure, you can check it on their website. Ideally you should start planning 6-9 months before your staging date and there are a number of things to consider. Start by determining what you want from a scheme, and then compare offerings, costs

pension provider your payroll already has links with, you’ll avoid unnecessary hassle and expense. In order to prepare your company for auto enrolment, take some time to check that your payroll data is complete and up to date. Where possible, make sure you have e-mail addresses for all staff as issuing communications about auto enrolment via email is often cheaper and more efficient than post. You should also give consideration to contribution levels. The minimum employer contributions are 1% of each member’s qualifying earnings, increasing to 3% over time. But give some thought to whether you would like to make a more generous employer contribution. Research we conducted with 2000 employees found that behind holiday entitlement, the quality of the pension is the benefit employees value the most with high employer contributions top of their wish list. So, while auto enrolment is a legal obligation, as an employer you can view it as an opportunity to offer a benefit that will help attract and retain employees. Approaching auto enrolment can feel daunting and there are a lot of things to consider, particularly for firms that have never set up a pension scheme before. But a little planning can go a long way and will help you to avoid sleepless nights.

and benefits. Is a traditional group pensions provider appropriate or would one of the companies specialising in the auto enrolment market be best for you?
Do your research Research we recently conducted with 450 SMEs found that 41% of employers in the construction sector haven’t given any thought to how they’ll go about finding a pension scheme for auto enrolment. But, by leaving it late, you could be taking a risk as not all pension providers are happy to accept all companies and all employees on equal terms. It therefore pays to do your research early to avoid being let down at the last minute. If you need help, consider speaking to an independent financial advisor or accountant. While selecting an appropriate scheme is imperative, your payroll provider also has a very important role to play. Contact them as soon as you can to find out what auto enrolment support they offer and which providers they work with. By selecting a

Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms
The incorporation of inclusive design principles can significantly help improve an older or disabled person’s quality of life
Inclusive ethos Enrico Carloni, Managing Director of Ponte Giulio, explains why he believes inclusive design principles should be embedded within the design and development of all accessible bathroom products.
E
very design decision has the potential to include or exclude customers. When designing new bathroom products, it’s not uncommon for manufacturers to instinctively or deliberately discriminate in favour of some and against other user groups’ needs and desires, but this very process restricts their ability to design products that are accessible for everyone. The British Standards Institute (2005) defines inclusive design as: “The design of mainstream products and/or services that are accessible to, and usable by, as many people as reasonably possible…without the need for special adaptation or specialised design.” By addressing the needs of a broad user group, inclusive design is better design as it inspires innovation and improves product experience for a wider audience. The ethos behind inclusive design and how it contributes to product success can be broken down into three areas – user diversity, capabilities and satisfaction. Understanding user diversity is an integral part of inclusive design, since different user groups offer varying experiences and opinions. A crucial stage in all new product development is undertaking market research which, when designing inclusive products, should be carried out across a broad range of user groups that take into consideration participants’ age, sex and cultural background.
26
Carrying out research at the right time and with the right focus is invaluable. A common misconception in society is that someone is either fully able or disabled. The recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which saw fully able athletes compete along with para athletes of varying disabilities, is a good demonstration of the diverse capabilities apparent within any population.
addressed the safety and functional needs of the elderly but gave little or no consideration to aesthetics. Accessible, adapted bathrooms – whether in a private home, nursing home or hospital – can give elderly people independence and help prevent falls and hospital admissions. Our Family range of accessible bathroom products, which includes sinks, grab rails, mirrors and other accessories, have all been designed following extensive market research that revealed that users wanted not only products that were safe and functional but ones that were more stylish. Most of our bathroom products incorporate BioCote antimicrobial technology, which delivers superior hygiene to the bathroom environment. BioCote technology adds silver ions into the exterior of products at the time of manufacture or as a coating, which can reduce surface bacteria by up to 80% within just 15 minutes and 99% within two hours. At Ponte Giulio, we believe that inclusive design principles should be embedded in the design and development of all accessible bathroom products, as successful inclusive design results in products that are functional, usable, desirable and ultimately profitable.
www.pontegiulio.co.uk
Addressing functional needs Only by considering the broad spectrum of user capabilities in the product development process can manufacturers make the best informed design decisions. Understanding the needs and desires of users can affect design inclusion and user satisfaction. Failure to correctly interpret market research can result in products that exclude users unnecessarily and frustrate customers. This, in turn, can lead to an increase in customer complaints that can ultimately destroy a product and a manufacturer’s reputation. The incorporation of inclusive design principles can significantly help improve an older or disabled person’s quality of life and allow them to stay in their homes for as long as comfortably possible. When designing our Family range of accessible bathroom products, we were surprised by how many products were available on the market that

ranslucent internal partitions by Rodeca have helped the new, award-winning innovation centre in the shell of a Grade 1 listed old station building to achieve “phenomenal and measurable” results. Some 390m2 of Rodeca’s 40mm PC 25404 Kristall polycarbonate wall panels usually used for external cladding and roofing were specified by childs+sulzmann architects for The Engine Shed at the Old Station Building at Temple Meads in Bristol.
28
It was the practice’s first use of Rodeca and architect Mike Cox said: “Our company had never used Rodeca materials before but due to the success on this project we will definitely be looking at using them on future projects. “We had seen images of a project in Holland, by Ector Hoogstad Architecten, where a converted steel plant had used the material as internal partitions and were impressed with the aesthetic created. “At The Engine Shed, the Rodeca cladding

As well as being 200 times tougher than glass, they can be over half as light (m2 of double-glazed 4mm glass + spacer bar + sealant at a total 22kg V a 60mm polycarbonate panel system of 8kg/m2), reducing the requirement, and associated costs, for large sections of additional steel to enable the building to bear the weight. They also perform to a high level thermally as they can be manufactured with U-values as low as 0.71-0.77 W/m²K as a single-wall construction and 0.36-0.43 W/ m²K as a double-wall construction. As such, they can be used to allow natural daylight (with light transmission of up to 66%) into a building without compromising its thermal integrity. Mike Tremlett said: “The project was fairly straightforward although it was in a Conservation Area so the utmost care was required. The Rodeca panels performed very well for the visual effect that was required.”
Design & Desire
The year-long build included the former GWR drawing office being converted to accommodate offices for high-tech start-up companies via Setsquared, the enterprise collaboration between the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter and Surrey. Mike Cox said: “The project emerged from a unique partnership between academic institutions, local and national Government offices and the private sector. It is the first significant development in the city’s Enterprise Zone which was

recognised by Government as having the most potential for growth in the country.
Sensitive revival “The results of this development have been phenomenal and measurable. The design allowed of 240 desk spaces of different types throughout the building. When work started on site less than 80 had been allocated. By the completion of the contract works, 30 weeks later, all the desks had been taken and a waiting list started.
t
The design has created a series of diverse spaces within the existing volume of The Engine Shed
“In addition, it was always the intention to offer a membership of The Engine Shed to anyone who might want to use the facilities for meetings, presentations, events and networking. Three months after opening, The Engine Shed has 2500 members.” He added: “The re-use of this quite exceptional listed building was an opportunity and a challenge. For decades we have as a society revered our built heritage and found it difficult to make the necessary alterations to such buildings, to bring them back into some kind of sustainable use. This project demonstrates that, even in the most sensitive of contexts, it is possible to occupy these magnificent structures. “We wanted a material that was in keeping with the industrial nature of the space, which was lightweight, recyclable and transparent, while diffusing the natural light.” He continued: “The project has also attracted attention both nationally and internationally. There has been a constant stream of visitors from government departments to local schools. Within the first few weeks two cabinet ministers and several vice chancellors of other universities came to see for themselves what has been achieved. “Already, the business incubator element of the project has been recognised and been awarded the Business Incubator Design award for the newly-opened Engine Shed by industry body UK Business Incubation.”

Design & Desire “The design has created a series of diverse spaces within the existing volume of The Engine Shed, completely transforming the nature of the existing building whilst retaining the scale and grandeur of the original space. The installation was achieved without any significant impacts on the fabric of the preserved structure of the old station. The Engine Shed now provides a highly innovative and lively working environment, meeting rooms, presentation space, cafe and lounge, and the entire construction is completely reversible without detriment to the historic building.
Flexible business environment “In technical terms the project is remarkably simple except in so far as it provides an exceptionally data-rich environment. New connectivity provides ultra-high speed (1GB) data connection throughout the facility. A combination of wireless and hardwired data transfer is integrated into the installation to suit flexible layouts and a multiplicity of uses to ensure the necessary capacity to respond to a changing business environment in the short and medium term.
“The key to environmental control was to create a buffer zone between the working environment and the outside and a series of specifically serviced areas to accommodate a variety of activities and uses, from business lounge to permanent office space. The most popular and hugely successful elements are the meeting pods which are separately controlled and datarich. Some 20% of the energy required to run the building is provided from renewable sources. “We believe that The Engine Shed, both as a building and as a concept, is the right vehicle to demonstrate that the West of England is the best place to start or grow a low-carbon, creative high-tech business. Its uniqueness and strength lies in how many people and organisations are under one roof – academics, entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, policy makers and business leaders. The project has generated an extraordinarily high impact in a very short time with a very small budget. It is the physical demonstrator of the collaboration between diverse groups of stakeholders and shows how the perception of a city can be changed with a simple, highly focused and innovative intervention.”
Some 20% of the energy required to run the building is provided from renewable sources
Bristol Mayor George Ferguson said: “The opening of The Engine Shed in record time demonstrates the innovation, ambition and collaborative working that exists here in the city. Once home to Brunel’s innovative railway, Engine Shed is now in the heart of Bristol’s Enterprise Zone and is home to creative and high-tech companies developing the technology of the future. It is also key node on the GigaBit Bristol broadband network connecting buildings in the city and developing the potential for new collaborative and creative working.”
Right vehicle for business
■
Engine Shed Director Nick Sturge added: “We believe that Engine Shed, both as a building and a concept, is the right vehicle to demonstrate that the West of England is the best place to start or grow a lowcarbon, creative or high-tech business. Its uniqueness and strength lies in how many people and organisations are under one roof – academics, entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, policy makers and business leaders. We like to think of it as a ‘living marketing suite’ for inward investors.” The project has attracted attention both nationally and internationally – there has been a constant stream of visitors from government departments to local schools

Drainage & Landscaping through parliament and a 6-month leadin period, doubts have been raised about implementation ahead of the next General Election.
Concrete block permeable paving used extensively, with other SuDS techniques, at Proctor & Matthews’ Abode housing, Cambridge - Winner of the Housing Design Awards 2014
Today, it is well recognised that sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and techniques such as concrete block permeable paving are needed to help fight flooding and pollution – particularly with overloaded sewers, urbanisation and climate change. Now, there is also a growing realisation that SuDS can deliver far more, as a fundamental part of urban design, as architect and consultant to Interpave Chris Hodson explains.
T
here is ample research to demonstrate the link between growing urbanisation and flooding, notably the report into the summer 2007 floods. Here, over two thirds of the 57,000 homes affected were flooded not by swollen rivers but by surface water runoff or surcharge from overloaded drainage systems. The 2010 Flood and Water Management Act – resulting from the Pitt Review into
32
the 2007 floods – is set to make SuDS mandatory for any construction work that affects the ability of land to absorb rainwater. Yet these measures cannot be directly applied until application of the long-awaited National Standards for SuDS and related Guidance. In June, Defra announced that the latest proposed implementation date of October this year would be missed. With enabling legislation still needed to pass
Find this issue plus much more on the fc&a app and fca-magazine.com
Fortunately, Government’s frustrating delays have pushed SuDS onto the local planning agenda and a growing number of local authorities consider it their social responsibility to press ahead with action now. There is also a real sense that SuDS are at the crossroads and we now have the opportunity to reassess how they could become an integral part of urban design through the planning process, led by architects, master-planners and landscape designers. Even without implementation of the National Standards and its Guidance, local planning authorities are free to adopt policies and requirements for SuDS with specific local agendas now, particularly as The National Planning Policy Framework already encourages use of SuDS. Increasingly, specific requirements for SuDS will be found in local policies and plans, master-plans and design codes for major developments and, particularly, in Supplementary Planning Documents. In some cases, such as Oxfordshire County Council, SuDS have been a key part of planning policy for decades but other local authorities have taken action more recently. Just one example is Central Bedfordshire Council which has developed and adopted SuDS guidance as a Supplementary Planning Document, in advance of the government’s Standards. Having said that, the latest research from the Committee on Climate Change – which considers adaptation to avoid flooding – found that less than half of the planning applications reviewed even considered SuDS, suggesting that many local authorities are still failing to follow national planning policy on sustainable drainage. It also demonstrates that planning regulations from 2008 for paving in front gardens and, subsequently, around non-domestic premises are not being enforced either. Here, permitted development rights were removed for new or replacement hard surfaces unless permeable paving or similar solutions are used. Clearly, local planning authorities must now prioritise sustainable drainage as a key element in development control.
Designers take the lead This is also a clarion call for architects, master-planners and other designers to take the lead in developing multi-functional

Drainage & Landscaping
The growing choice of concrete block permeable paving products available from Interpave manufacturers allows real design freedom
Established technology SuDS technology is not new to the UK and is well established in other countries. It is clear from all the guidance – but sometimes forgotten – that there is more to SuDS than water storage and they should deliver:
planning from the very start. Conceptually, a SuDS scheme comprises a ‘management train’ of interconnected features, each delivering all three attributes wherever possible. SuDS manage surface water by attenuation and filtration with the aim of replicating, as closely as possible, the natural drainage from a site before development. That is not to say that all SuDS features have to be vegetated – for example, concrete block permeable paving is a well-used SuDS technique – or that urban projects need to take on a rural character with lower housing densities. As the latest draft National Standards Guidance states, SuDS “should aim to manage surface water within sub-catchments, close to source and at or near surface as reasonably practicable”. Concrete block permeable paving is uniquely placed to meet these requirements. In terms of place-shaping and urban design, the growing choice of concrete block permeable paving products available from Interpave manufacturers – with numerous
shapes, styles, finishes and colours – allows real design freedom. They can also be used in conjunction with conventional precast concrete paving products, sharing the same impressive performance including slip and skid resistance, durability and strength.
Impressive performance At the same time, permeable paving can provide completely level, well-drained, firm and slip-resistance ‘accessible’ surfaces without the need for cross-falls, channels, gulleys or other interruptions. Rainwater ‘ponding’ is eliminated, reducing the risk of ice forming on the surface and preventing splashing from standing water. But its real strength is an ability to remove water-borne pollution offering the important – and often missed – opportunity of a gradual supply of treated water that can be exploited for innovative landscape design, harvesting and ecology by imaginative designers.
■
SuDS as an integral part of place shaping. This is recognised by the RIBA’s July 2014 report Building a Better Britain which points out that: “For too long, we have been designing water out of our towns and cities when we should have been designing it in…” and stresses the need to: “start putting water at the heart of discussions about what makes places great to live in.” A number of recent SuDS schemes in the UK demonstrate misconceptions about the nature of SuDS and missed opportunities – particularly through the wider use of permeable paving as a source control. Now is the time for a closer understanding of, and engagement with, SuDS by designers and planners, as well as a convergence of SuDS and other planning guidance at all levels. With good design as a priority, engineering then becomes a supporting function, not an end in itself.

Recent guidance for both designers and regulators on how to go about implementing SuDS can be found in a Code of Practice, BS 8582:2013. It seeks to integrate SuDS with urban design in delivering amenity and community value as well as enhancing landscape and/or townscape character. It also stresses the importance of linking surface water management and development

Glass & Glazing Generally, toughened glass is five times stronger than the same thickness of annealed glass
Glass roots Firman Glass is a leading glazing provider offering a range of standard and bespoke solutions to the marketplace. Renowned for its fast, flexible and reliable service, Firman meets the needs of its customers by operating 6 days a week, 24 hours a day. Here, Future Constructor & Architect reveals the secret behind the company’s success.
F
irman’s customer base is diverse, from local glass merchants, kitchen manufacturers, shopfitters through to architects and builders. The wideranging requirements of these clients clearly demonstrate Firman’s ability to service the entire market competently, and reflect its ‘can do’ attitude time and time again.
Leading the way Originally established in 1975 as an emergency glazing supplier, the company has since branched out to toughened, decorative anti-slip and laminated products thanks to a significant investment in specialist processing machinery and equipment. The small family firm is supported by an
36
army of workshop staff, operating some of the most advanced machinery in the glass manufacturing sector. In a bid to stay one step ahead of its competitors, Firman believes strongly in investment. In 1991, Firman purchased the very first CNC polishing machine for shaped and profiled edge processed glass. This opened many new doors and even led to processing glass for Pilkington aerospace and Asahi glass – two of the largest corporations in the world. Following this and the growth of the use of toughened glass, Firman invested further in its first EFCO toughening plant, capable of toughening a maximum size of 1.500 x 3.000. Another CNC polisher and two state-ofthe-art CNC drilling machine pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved. The most recent addition is its COOLTEMPER toughening furnace that is not only one of the largest in the UK but also Europe, with a maximum toughening size of 5000 x 3000mm. With advanced capabilities in place, Firman Glass is able to manufacture a comprehensive range of toughened glass products, suitable for a wide variety of applications, from architectural through to retail and domestic. Its Firma Tuff brand has become industry recognised as a sign of consistent quality. The raw material is subjected to a heat treatment process, which induces a comprehensive stress to the surfaces of the glass panel. This increase in compressive stress increases the resistance to mechanical forces. Generally, toughened glass is five times stronger than the same thickness of annealed glass which when fractured breaks.

The balanced internal stresses created during this heated process causes the glass to shatter into small, granular chunks instead of the more dangerous jagged shards of nontoughened glass. A popular application for Firman’s toughened glass is balustrades. The company supplies its products for use in glass balustrade systems to some of the largest architectural metalwork companies in England. Firma Tuff is suitable for use in two and four edge supported infill panel barriers

Glass & Glazing for 30 minute integrity only and 11.4mm Pyroguard for 60 minute integrity only applications. and provides the highest level of safety for structural balustrades where the glass is clamped only by its bottom edge. Glass is available in clear float, low iron glass, satin etched glass or body-tinted glass.
Bespoke operation The glazing specialist can also manufacture laminated glass to a maximum size of 6000 x 2800mm. Along with supplying high quality safety and structural glass products, the company can achieve any bespoke decorative design requested by the client using specialist printed or coloured interlays. The main benefits of toughened laminated glass are its strength and performance under impact and post fracture. It is capable of withstanding very large loads and in the unlikely event of being broken, the interlayer will retain the resulting fragments. This is vital on certain types of projects such as airports, shopping centres, floors and canopies or anywhere safety and security becomes a major issue. Firman Glass canopies come in many standard sizes but can also be custom produced for domestic, commercial and retail applications. All canopy glazing must be subject to professional calculation on the basis of accurate snow and wind loads, however Firman Glass can offer technical assistance at the estimating stage prior to approval by the client’s Structural Engineer. Using toughened or toughened and laminated glass, Firman Glass can incorporate logos, branding or property details by using sandblasting, digital print or coloured interlayers. Also popular within its portfolio of robust and aesthetic glazing solutions is its anti-slip
decorative glass. Tested to UK and European Standards, the glazing is available toughened and laminated – or even multi-laminated with Vanceva coloured interlays. Glass can be processed, shaped or drilled as required and designed for a host of applications from glass floors and bridges through to stair treads. Firman Glass is also a fire-resistant glass and glazing specialist supplier with Schueco SAFE certificates for steel framing systems. The company stocks 7.2mm Pyroguard
■
Popular within Firman’s portfolio of robust and aesthetic glazing solutions is its anti-slip decorative glass
In addition to the company’s expertise in glass processing, Firman also offers an in-house fabrication service, providing all types of metalwork to complement its glass. Purpose-built fittings can be designed for balustrades, doors and canopies. Pressed channels can also be produced to suit individual requirements, along with ring rolling and hand polishing of stainless steel. In a saturated glazing market, competing for business demands confidence in ability and service. Firman’s customerled philosophy and ingenuity ensures its customers’ visions are brought to fruition, however big or small, and with investment an integral part of driving innovation, specifiers in search of the latest solutions needn’t look no further than this familyrun team of specialists.

Timber Expo Preview
Timber trends
Timber Focus offers real life examples on how and why timber is performing across a wide range of sectors and applications
Timber Expo is the most important event on the UK construction calendar dedicated exclusively to timber, its associated technologies and its many applications. It is two days brimming with the latest products, innovations and developments. This year Timber Expo will be taking place from 7-8th October 2014 at the NEC, Birmingham.
T
imber Expo will again this year deliver an unrivalled collection of high calibre speakers from all corners of the built environment. From niche areas to leading trends, the Timber Focus seminar sessions will be characterised by big issues, hot topics, architectural gems and inspirational projects. Timber is grabbing the headlines for all the right reasons – clients want to learn more about it, architects appreciate the adaptability and customers love to be closer to it. Organised by TRADA, the free to attend Timber Focus seminars are spread over two days of the show and will be mostly case study-based to offer real life examples on how and why timber is performing across a wide range of sectors and applications. The 2014 content has largely been informed by feedback from previous shows and research – for the full programme visit the website.
Key session themes Pushing Boundaries: stretching imaginations – this will examine the opportunities for innovation in timber around the world and new possibilities in the UK. Speakers will be drawn from top
engineering firms including Arup, Ramboll UK and Buro Happold and will focus on ‘boundary-pushing’ initiatives. Training and Talent: growing your business through people – the future success of your organisation rests on recruiting, developing and retaining the best and brightest people. Here speakers will discuss the importance of apprenticeships, training and mentoring. Resource: Directors’ briefings – new for 2014. Aimed mainly at timber industry leaders and executives, these short, concise updates will cover pressing strategy and policy areas affecting timber business. Innovation: designing the future – this will include sessions from the winners of two categories in this year’s TTJ Innovation Awards – the Innovative Market Development category and the Innovative Product Development category. Engineers and Timber: ingenious structures and Architects and Timber: striking designs – these will highlight shortlisted entries from the Wood Awards 2014.
Sense of Space: creating places to live, work and play – much of what we build is functional but not always an aesthetic experience.Timber has much to offer with its myriad textures, grain patterns, colours, finishes and organic warmth – arguably more so than any other material. At the heart of Timber Expo each year is the Timber Buyers and Specifiers Forum – a purposeful environment for building business networks. This focused approach has proved to be highly successful in creating new business relationships, facilitating meetings and most importantly, generating business. With a busy schedule and not enough time to meet new suppliers – the Buyers & Specifiers Forum provides a solution to extend networks and meet with innovative companies from the UK and beyond. By facilitating ‘one-to-one’ supplier business meetings the Forum enables Buyers & Specifiers to have private meetings without leaving the comfort of the Forum lounge, but also still providing access to the exhibition.
■
Seminar content has largely been informed by feedback from previous shows and research
From Blueprint to Building: a client and contractor perspective – a chance to hear from some of the bigger contractors and clients in the UK on how they have been using timber to its maximum potential. Speakers from Willmott Dixon, Sir Robert McAlpine and BAM will share case studies and thoughts.

Timber Focus Ochil Timber’s innovative timber construction system comfortably met PKC’s requirements on environmental and energy performance
Full marks for Ochil Timber The challenges facing Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) Architects’ Property Department weren’t hard to find when Kinnoull Primary School needed a new gymnasium and additional classroom space.
P
roject architect Jana Boult explains: “The school is situated in a disused quarry so is surrounded on three sides by high stone cliffs and there’s only one tight point of access, making craning impossible. The site for the gym and classrooms was occupied by a large pre-1948 timber building and one smaller modular building used as classrooms, all of which had to be demolished first. And the whole school is C listed, so what we could do in terms of design was very restricted.” Against these constraints PKC managed to design a new gymnasium building and one two-storey classroom, more or less on the footprint of the demolished buildings, using an innovative structural timber system, fabricated in home-grown Scottish timber. The new buildings are also clad in untreated Scottish larch and they sit below the height of the existing buildings, making the whole invisible from the nearby road. The different parts of the construction – classroom, gym and linking corridor – are at different levels, which says Jana, with evident satisfaction, “Gives it a lovely, quirky feel.” PKC were also committed to providing the school with a modern building which met the highest environmental and energy performance standards – 10% over the Scottish Regulation requirements.
“We wanted,” says Jana, “to wrap the building in a cosy blanket and insulate it so there were no cold bridges.” Enter Ochil Timber Ltd, the project’s chosen supplier. Ochil is a Stirlingshirebased company, established 30 years ago, which manufactures, supplies and erects SpaceStud, SpaceRafter and SpaceJoist, an innovative timber construction system, which comfortably met PKC’s requirements on environmental and energy performance.
Andrew explains the solution: “We individually cut all the studs and components to size off site and delivered them as “Ikea-type” flat packs to site, complete with full design drawings, so they could be easily erected, like a huge jigsaw puzzle.” Neil Smyth, Construction Manager with Morrison Construction, the main contractors on the job, expands on Andrew’s point, saying: “The ‘buildability’ of Ochil’s system was very helpful on what was a particularly tight site at Kinnoull and it certainly was effective in meeting the brief on air tightness and thermal performance.” Architect Jana Boult is clearly delighted with Kinnoul’s completed gymnasium and classrooms: “It’s a lovely little building,” she says, “warm, modern, efficient and environmentally friendly.” And the success of Ochil’s supply of its Space Stud System can be measured in the fact that it has since supplied and erected the system for a complete school at Invergowrie. 8 www.ochiltimber.com *

Embracing innovation Managing Director Andrew McAree describes his company as “Specialising in the unusual, embracing innovation and technology in timber.” Ochil designed and supplied all the components for Kinnoul Primary in home grown timber – floors, walls and roofs – and used high performance timber fibreboard insulation. In all the company supplied 52 SpaceJoists, 40 SpaceRafters, and 210 individual SpaceStuds consisting of 736 linear metres of stud. Key challenges for Ochil were the need to manufacture the OSB-lined structural studs to 5m and 6m heights to meet the specification for the gymnasium; and the difficulties of delivering these, and the other components, to the extremely tight site.

Timber Focus The structural frame was constructed by Cygnum and made with timber sourced from local Thetford Forest
Project reaches construction milestone The team behind The Enterprise Centre at The University of East Anglia has reached another key construction milestone with the completion of the building’s ground-breaking timber frame.

the project. The structural frame was constructed by Cygnum and made with timber sourced from local Thetford Forest. The Morgan Sindall project team collaborated with Cygnum, The Forestry Commission and Thomson Saw Mills to take lumber that isn’t generally used for timber frame construction and use it to compose some of the structural elements of the building. Gavin Napper, Area Director for Morgan Sindall said: “People have generally shied away from using local timber in construction, doubting its suitability as a construction material. We wanted to challenge that perception and tap into the great resources which are available locally. “Due to the area’s climate and soil conditions, timber sourced from East Anglia tends to be fast growing Corsican Pine, which has a number of characteristics that make it more challenging than timber sourced from further afield and so does not lend itself as easily to this type of structural frame. However, our team was committed to using local timber and so we conducted extensive research, which enabled us to sort, condition and grade the Thetford timber which we used to construct the building’s frame.”
Sustainable build Once the timber had been sourced from Thetford Forest, located just 30 miles from the Enterprise Centre site, it was processed and sawn locally in Thomson Saw Mills, north of Norwich. The timber was then sent to Ireland, as local kilns were unable to meet the drying regimes necessary to bring the timber to the required moisture content. There it was kiln dried, planed and strength
graded to meet the structural engineer’s pre-determined requirements. John French, CEO of the Adapt Low Carbon Group, said: “Sustainability means using local resources and building high value supply chains from natural resources like forestry. This reduces carbon and creates high value jobs just as countries in Scandinavia have done. I am confident that the Enterprise Centre will stand up as a beacon of innovation that the enterprising businesses can now follow. “Many people have talked a lot about using Thetford Forest timber in the built environment – we launched the idea at Ecobuild in 2010. I am proud that my team on this project have delivered it for the first time and so quickly, and proved it to be possible. It is a credit to our collaborative team, UEA, and to our contractors Morgan Sindall and sub-contractors Cygnum, that this is now happening.” Gavin Napper added: “The successful use of UK timber in the Enterprise Centre could have a positive impact on the wider industry’s uptake of local timber. We’ve shown that lumber which is normally used for much simpler purposes like fence posts and pallets can play a much more significant role in the structural life of a construction project. “The completion of the timber frame marks a key milestone in the construction of the low carbon building and we are delighted with the progress that is being made on The Enterprise Centre.” 8 www.morgansindall.com *

Micronized technology brings with it some distinctive features, when compared to current copper amine based systems
Preservation system of choice When it comes to product development in the timber preservation industry, revolutions are somewhat rare. The traditional principle of copper amine timber preservation has evolved in its technological advancements, rather than undergone a seismic shift. The industry has not experienced such a radical transformation, until now.
M
icronized preservative technology, developed in the United States by Koppers, is in simple terms that seismic shift that fundamentally changes the timber preservation landscape.Whilst active ingredients remain broadly identical, it is the production process and preservative delivery vehicle that has undergone a radical transformation. Rather than dissolving the primary biocidal active, copper carbonate, in an amine solution, Koppers’ revolutionary approach, developed over a 15 year period, has been to micronize the copper carbonate through a series of complex milling processes to reduce the size of the copper carbonate particle, which is then suspended in a water-based solution. Lee Christie, Koppers UK Business Director, says: “MicroPro is a timber treatment technology which works differently, delivering at all levels of the supply chain. It ticks all environmental, performance, operational and aesthetic boxes.” The micronized technology brings with it
some distinctive features, when compared to current copper amine based systems. These include: faster drying and enhanced fixation of active ingredients; a clean, even light green colour, weathering to a darker attractive honey tan colour; no organic solvents, setting new environmental benchmarks (VOC free); improved compatibility with metal fixings and fasteners; and availability of a long lasting MicroShades pigmentation system. However, the technology principles are nothing new and have long been applied within the pharmaceutical, paint and coating industries since the very conception of the traditional copper amine preservative system. Micronized technology, in the form of micronized zinc oxide, is in fact even used in high quality sunscreens. While micronized technology is a relatively new development within the European timber preservation arena, the MicroPro
technology is the predominant treatment method within the United States and Australasia, with in excess of 20 million m3 of MicroPro treated timber product sold to date, the equivalent of decking the surface area of the United Kingdom threefold. Whilst the aesthetic qualities make the preservative system a natural choice for visible applications, e.g. decking and cladding, with micronized pigment systems such as MicroShades adding further value, its operational and environmental credentials mean that it is also the preservative system of choice for a broad spectrum of applications, such as landscaping, agricultural, timber-frame and particularly outdoor children’s activity equipment and public buildings. Matthew Hempson, Koppers European Business Development Director says: “The introduction of MicroPro to our European customers is consistent with our objective to harness technology which can deliver tangible environmental, operational and product benefits to our customers, and more importantly our customers’ customers.” Brookridge Timber has for many years been at the forefront of the pressure treatment market and was an early adopter of the new technology. Neil Lush, Sales & Marketing Director, comments: “After extensive research into the product, we were quickly convinced by the micronized process. Customer reaction to the micronized process and its fresh appearance has been fantastic, with orders won purely on the basis of end-user preference for the MicroPro micronized appearance.”

Timber Focus return on investment. With sustainability in the construction industry being of high importance, having PEFC or FSC Chain of Custody Certification, ensures projects maintain a fully transparent Green Supply Chain.
Fire resistance It is in medium rise residential developments where the advantages of CLT as a core structural solution truly come into play
The optimum medium rise solution Speed, strength and sustainability – the key benefits of cross laminated timber (CLT) construction. But what does this actually mean in practice? CLT is now extensively used across the commercial and education construction sectors and the benefits have been widely acknowledged, but it has not been prolifically used in residential developments in the UK, until now.
A
ccording to the findings of a recent survey by the Structural Timber Association, 74% of the UK’s contractors, developers, architects and registered providers revealed they plan to increase specifications of structural timber due to benefits such as thermal, acoustic and sustainability performance, together with speed of build. It is in medium rise residential developments where the advantages of CLT as a core structural solution truly come into play. The key is in the strength to weight ratio of the engineered timber – it has proven multi-storey capability, with residential buildings up to nine storeys already constructed in the UK and a structural capacity beyond this.Typically the solid timber walls for 5-6 storey construction are often in the region of 140mm thick, therefore optimising internal space use. Factory manufactured to exacting standards, CLT is
50
an extremely stable solution which has little shrinkage or movement post construction. The benefits during construction are numerous – from reduced loading on foundations and infrastructure services, to impressive thermal, acoustic and airtightness performance over more traditional materials, but most importantly a CLT construction solution provides cost and programme certainty.
Cost and programme certainty Being a largely prefabricated offsite solution, CLT is manufactured to exceptional levels of accuracy, ensuring minimal defects. This improves construction and project delivery timescales, reduces costs and maximises efficiency on all levels. With other methods of construction, significant contingencies have to be allocated for unpredicted situations, such as secondary members for additional structural bracing. With cost certainty crucial for developers and affordable housing providers, CLT eliminates this risk as it is manufactured in controlled factory conditions and the only element which may affect costs, are changes to the design of the structural frame or building re-configuration.
One of the most crucial advantages of particular relevance to multi-storey residential developments is CLT’s inherent fire resistance. The panels can be designed to a specified fire resistance and unlike steel, remain structurally stable when subjected to high temperatures. CLT panels can be designed to fire resistances of 30, 60 and 90 minutes. CLT is the only structural timber solution to fully comply with all Fire Resistance REI classes and addresses all three; loadbearing capacity, integrity and insulation performance requirements without the need for costly add-ons or adaptations. At the forefront of European CLT research and development, the X-LAM Alliance is an innovative partnership bringing to the UK construction market a seamless and consistent method of supplying certified structural packages, across all construction sectors. Speed and sustainability Precision engineered for onsite installation, using CLT as a core structural component reduces site construction time, making project planning less weather-dependant, more predictable and therefore, reducing programme risk. Internal works can proceed earlier to make the critical path run more smoothly, which again improves construction and project delivery time, reduces costs, maximises efficiency on all levels, and most importantly offers a faster

Timber Focus The new single-storey facility acts as the gateway to the arboretum and is a modest but warm timber-framed building
Royal seal of approval Glenn Howells Architects announces it has completed work on the new Biffa Award Welcome Building – at the Forestry Commission’s National Arboretum at Westonbirt.
B
ased in the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, the arboretum is a Grade I registered landscape that is home to an internationally renowned tree collection and heritage area. The Duchess of Cornwall, Patron of the Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum, marked the occasion by propagating a (Stewartia sinensis) tree sapling and officially declared the new building open. The new single-storey facility acts as the gateway to the arboretum and is a modest but warm timber-framed building. The building is curved in plan and draws in visitors from several directions and distributes them out into the wider landscape.True to the ethos of the Forestry Commission, the building, acclaimed for its sustainable design, has been constructed from UK-grown Douglas fir and western red cedar timber, with its floor constructed in pennant stone from the Forest of Dean. The opening also marks the launch of the second phase of Westonbirt’s plans for a new Treetop Walkway built to transport visitors up into the tree canopy, giving them a

different perspective on the collection. From this elevated viewpoint they will be able to see the trees close up, view wildlife habitats and look out over the wider landscape. The Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum launched a £1.9m fundraising campaign at the opening, with only £600k left to raise. Simon Pearson, Associate, Glenn Howells Architects: “We are very proud to be adding value to such an historic and internationally renowned site. This brand new facility, with great care and attention paid to visitor flow and use of materials, will greatly enhance the visitor experience and help ensure Westonbirt’s popularity for many years to come.”
A welcoming design Simon Toomer, Director of Westonbirt Arboretum: “The opening of our new Biffa Award Welcome Building marks a new beginning here at Westonbirt. For the first time, visitors have a proper welcome to The National Arboretum, and have the opportunity to learn all about this important collection of trees and the work carried out to conserve and develop it. Next year we hope to see the opening of a new Treetop Walkway, giving visitors an exciting new perspective on the arboretum’s trees and landscape.” The Forestry Commission hopes that the state-of-the-art facilities will give Westonbirt’s visitors a deeper understanding of and greater interest in England’s woods and forests. Disability A Changing Places toilet makes a location accessible to anyone who needs a carer when going to the toilet, giving them back their dignity, and improving hygiene
Changing Places to give dignity Would you like to be lying on the floor, in full view of other users, if you needed the toilet when away from home? For some ¼million children and adults, this is often the reality, because venues are not properly accessible or inclusive.
lift you out of the wheelchair and place you on a flat surface to have your continence pad changed – this is what I am forced to do with my seven year old son, I have to lay him on a urine soaked floor inside the disabled loo, with the 2nd carer standing outside with the wheelchair they have to pass to me the changing accessories through the open door for all passers by to view, this is one of the most awful experiences I have to face every time I go into my local town centre.
A
“We take it for granted that we would not change a baby on the floor of a public toilet – so why on earth is this acceptable for disabled adult people?” “We go to the toilet eight times a day on average,” elaborates Kelvin Grimes, Changing Places Project Manager for Clos-o-Mat, Britain’s leading provider of disabled toilet solutions. “Research shows people make a conscious decision not to go somewhere if they feel there are not suitable toilet facilities. To be ‘cold’ about it, statistics show that visitors with disabilities account for a market worth £2b to English tourism, so it’s worth making a nominal investment to be inclusive/accessible.” Clos-o-Mat is the only British company with the ability to, in-house, provide design advice, supply, installation, project management, commissioning and ongoing service & maintenance of the equipment. To help all involved in the decision
correctly-designed and specified Changing Places toilet overcomes those issues, making a location accessible to anyone who needs a carer when going to the toilet, giving them back their dignity, and improving hygiene. With more space than a conventional wheelchair-accessible WC (12m2), a Changing Places toilet further includes, at least, a peninsular toilet, hoist, adult-sized height adjustable changing bench, washbasin and privacy screen. As a result, the user can toilet, and be clean, in an appropriate, hygienic environment. Yet to date, only 600 exist in the UK. That equates to just 10% of the total number of public toilets, excluding toilets at public venues, tourist attractions etc. Says Changing Places campaigner Samantha Buck: “If you are severely disabled or paralysed, you need carers to

Durable roofing on show Stuart Hicks from waterproofing membrane specialist, Kemper System, explains how a cold liquidapplied waterproofing membrane is being used to provide a long-term solution to wear and tear at event and exhibition venue, Telford International Centre.
O
ne of the UK’s larger regional venues, The International Centre Telford offers 15,000m2 of flexible event space over three event halls and two purpose-built conference and banqueting suites, located at the heart of the new £250m Southwater development. The venue’s owner, Southwater Event Group, has invested over £50m in the venue and its Group hotels and attention
The contractor was able to create a seamless return around the roof section perimeter thanks to the easy application of the liquid Kemperol membrane
56
Kemper System was recently called upon to provide a long-term solution to wear and tear at event and exhibition venue, Telford International Centre
has turned to the roof at The International Centre as part of the latest phase. A number of unsatisfactory repairs to the single ply membrane over the years have led to the decision to overlay the roof with a cold liquid-applied membrane and the first section has now been completed using Kemper System’s Kemperol V210.
Installation challenges The refurbished roof section has a range of complex details, plant and equipment: features which were characterised by multiple vulnerable laps and seams in the single ply membrane. By using a liquid waterproofing system that can be cold applied without any of the seams, laps and joints associated with the old system, these vulnerabilities in the roof will be overcome. Roofing contractor Profile Industrial Roofing Services Limited, began by preparing the 800m2 roof area to ensure the substrate was clean, dry and stable. A primer was then applied to each section and allowed to cure prior to the application of the Kemperol V210 resin. The resin saturates a non-woven, tear resistant polyester reinforcement fleece and cures to form a monolithic, seamless membrane that cannot delaminate and bonds directly to the substrate. On site, engineers painstakingly removed individual legs supporting the air conditioning plant on the roof one at a time, so that the Kemperol V210

membrane could be applied underneath to remove the potential for leaks in those areas without disturbing the air conditioning and ventilation units. The liquid-applied system also helped to reduce the vulnerability of the valley gutters, seamlessly accommodating their exact contours. In areas where there was very limited access, with just a 15-20mm space for applying the system, the contractor was able to create a seamless return around the roof section perimeter thanks to the easy application of the liquid Kemperol membrane.
Leak-free future As more and more companies focus on future maintenance costs and risk of disruption as part of the business case for selecting a roofing system, the ease of installation, durability, flexibility and seamfree nature of liquid applied systems have become widely recognised for their whole life value. For Telford International Centre, that has meant a new approach to making longterm improvements designed to provide a BBA certified service life for the roof for the next 25 years. 8 www.kempersystem.co.uk *

Abutments in coursed and random stone Where a gable abuts a masonry cavity wall, preformed cavity trays running above and parallel with the roofline are incorporated in the masonry to prevent permeating water from descending below the abutment. In the case of brickwork, standard 75mm coursed trays are used. But where the walling material is of different coursing, a different depth or built against a backing block, an alternative approach is required. Multicourse cavitrays are manufactured by Cavity Trays of Yeovil and are available in an infinite combination of dimensions to suit the walling material being used to build the gable. Trays are first sized to match the ‘course’ height. The cavitray layout must provide continuous unbroken protection throughout the slope, creating what might be described as a DPC staircase. The tray base being the stair tread and the tray end upstand the riser. Masonry above the tray line will be exposed to the weather but the staircase of trays prevents dampness permeating below.
The depth of each tray is proportioned to accommodate the outer skin of masonry and extend into the cavity. This depth includes any backing block against which the outer skin is being raised. Once the tray base reaches an appropriate position in the cavity it rises upwardly, to provide protection across the cavity width. This rising upstand is also hinged so it can span and protect the ‘as built’ cavity width as opposed to the ‘as intended’. As the flashing is already attached and shaped to suit the roof pitch, the usual task of raking out joints and cutting/fitting separate flashings is eliminated. Having the flashings attached also means suspect joins are eliminated plus there is no need to return to point-in afterwards. One can select long flashings to dress directly over profiled tiles
or short flashings to dress over a secret gutter or soaker. Cavity Trays is the only UK tray manufacturer awarded European Technical Approval and will schedule all requirements to provide the ‘complete solution’ for abutments. 8 www.cavitytrays.com *

Walthamstow blues A 13-storey hotel next to Walthamstow Central Station, London, has been completed, clad with Nordic Blue Living copper from Aurubis Architectural alongside black brickwork. Located on a prominent town centre site, the 107-bedroom hotel forms a key part of a mixed-use scheme that will also provide new homes, retail space and a landscaped public realm. The ÂŁ20m scheme has been developed by Solum Regeneration, a partnership between Network Rail and Kier Property, and will help revitalise this area of the town centre, creating a new urban gateway. Designed by Rolfe-Judd Architects, the hotel tower is conceived as a series of vertical articulated masses, differentiated by facades clad either in black brick or Nordic Blue Living 1 copper. Nordic Blue is a factoryapplied patina developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. In marine climates, the natural copper patina contains some copper chloride giving it more of a blue colour and this is emulated with Nordic Blue using 100% brochantite.
Another range, Nordic Green, is produced with a hint of iron sulphate yellow, replicating the natural green. With both ranges, the process can be accurately controlled so that, as well as the solid blue or green patina colours, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material, as with the Nordic Blue Living 1 here. The material is easily bent and formed, and there are no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets. This enabled the vertical long-strip cladding, as used at Walthamstow broken up by horizontal bands at floor levels. 8 www.aurubis.com/finland/architectural *

Solving substrate stress The screed layer of a floor is integral to making sure that this aspect of the building looks and performs as intended, which means that installing the right screed for the location is as essential as installing the right floor finish. Developers need to look at several key considerations about the chosen screed and the application method before verifying if the specified solution will meet the long-term needs of the site. One of the first steps will be to analyse the
quality of the underlying concrete slabs to ascertain what level of substrate preparation or repair will be required. For example in the case of bonded screeds the substrate will need to undergo preparation, typically by shot blasting or scrabbling, to provide a suitable
surface for the screed to adhere to. Once in place the screed will need to be able to not only support the finish that is applied on top, but also the everyday, on-going activity of the site. Inadequate screed layers will inevitably fail when subjected to heavy or intensive workloads, spoiling the seamless, attractive surface above it. Flowcrete UK has built up an extensive amount of experience supplying screed solutions to some of the largest commercial and industrial sites in the country, meaning that it is well placed to advise on the optimum application for a new-build or refurbishment project. The resin flooring specialist’s comprehensive selection of floor screeds includes a number of heavy-duty, selfsmoothing and environmentally friendly surface underlayments. For sites that want to get the most out of the screed layer, Flowcrete UK can provide its award-winning Isocrete K-Screed solution, which contains a plasticising and accelerating admixture to enhance the system’s performance. 8 www.flowcrete.co.uk *

Practical and adaptable for zoning, Contour sits well with Forbo’s luxury Westbond fusion bonded carpet tiles, and also alongside Allura Flex luxury vinyl tiles, which offer a high quality, dimensionally stable, loose lay floorcovering for areas requiring a resilient flooring solution. New Contour is also an environmental choice as it contains over 50% recycled content by weight. The installation and production waste can be recycled back into Tessera tiles through Forbo’s ‘Back to the Floor’ scheme – completely closing the loop, although installation waste can also be minimised to just 2% if Contour is installed non-directionally. Furthermore, Forbo is also an active member of Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK), which has a target to divert 25% of carpet waste from landfill by 2015 recovering valuable raw materials. Manufactured in the United Kingdom using precision tufting technology and an ultrasonic tile cutting process, tile waste is significantly reduced by 80% compared to traditional press cutting methods. 8 www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/contour *

Diespeker restores terrazzo to former glory Terrazzo is an extremely durable and a popular choice of flooring material for locations attracting high footfall. Inevitably, through prolonged intensive use, or when alterations take place, tiles will require repair. Restoration is a more sustainable goal than replacement but is a labour-intensive task few companies are prepared to tackle. London marble and terrazzo specialist Diespeker combines traditional skills with modern equipment to offer a comprehensive restoration service. Diespeker recently worked with Volker Fitzpatrick to carry out repairs and replace worn tiles on the concourse at Charing

Cross Station. The refurbishment was managed from Diespeker’s standard design range using tiles produced in the company’s South London factory. For projects requiring thinner sheets of standard range terrazzo, Diespeker calls on its established supplier in Verona to utilise a specialist, mechanised process. This compresses thicker sheets of terrazzo and adds strength, allowing the sheets to be

sliced more finely before being cut into tiles. Back in the UK, Diespeker uses the latest Italian cutting machinery to add bespoke detail such as grooves and insets. Where terrazzo renovation falls outside of its standard range, Diespeker retains traditional hand casting skills and tools in-house, enabling the company to match any distinctive design. The factory is capable of handling the complete process in-house, from mix to polish, through to installation. Restoration is only a part of the Diespeker story, and the business also supplies high end standard and bespoke flooring and cladding solutions and vanity units for a range of sectors, including restaurants and hotels, retail, offices and banking. 8 www.diespeker.co.uk *

Plasterboard and the feel good factor The Gypsum Products Development Association (GPDA) is highlighting the role of gypsum-based plasters and plasterboard in the trend towards building for ‘wellbeing’ in interiors. According to the GPDA, which represents Britain and Ireland’s gypsum product manufacturers, plasterboard and plaster scores highly on many key design factors identified by Evidence Based Design (EBD), from good sound and thermal insulation to improved air quality and aesthetics, all of which can add value to the physical environment and promote human wellbeing. Scientific research related to human behaviour in a built environment indicates that design factors such as colour, acoustics, lighting and furnishings have a calculable impact on building occupants. *

TTA adds member services with new HQ The Tile Association is boosting the services it is able to offer to its members, with the opening this month of a prestigious new HQ building in Stone, Staffordshire.
In addition to providing a base for the administration services of the Association’s secretariat, all TTA Board and committee meetings will now take place here as well. The Mount also has facilities to enable the Association to hold technical seminars and provide hands-on fixer training, as well as conference and meeting rooms for the use of TTA and member companies. The boardroom, seating 16-18 people, is available for hire by member companies, as is the training room. TTA chairman Ian Kershaw, who has an office in the building, says: “This is a great new resource for our members, where we are combining the running of the secretariat in the same building as a suite of products and services which we believe will be of use to our members. “In the future we will develop a full tile training and testing area for use by members, as well as a technical library, including tiling standards and associated information. For the first time this enables us to open up
our HQ building for trade events, technical seminars, conferences and other activities for members. I think this shows once again how TTA is moving up a gear in 2014 and thinking creatively about new member services, adding increased value to TTA membership.” The Mount is conveniently situated just 10 minutes from the M6 and has parking for 20 cars. 8 www.tiles.org.uk *

Conservation range enhances prestigious new build EAB Homes and Developments, (EAB), the award-winning design and build property specialist, has specified leaded light Oak casement windows, French and bi-fold doors for a beautiful new residence in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. Traditional rectangular leaded casements are part of Mumford & Wood’s highly coordinated Conservation range which includes sliding sash windows, French doorsets, bi-fold and entrance doors in traditional and contemporary styles. The company’s flush leaded casement is representative of designs of the Arts & Craft era which spanned a 30-year period reaching its height in the early 20th century. Airbloc, part of AmbiRad, a leading developer and manufacturer of energy efficient HVAC systems has recently completed a project for National Express in Digbeth, Birmingham. The previous building had eight gates and two external entrances. The problem was keeping the cold air out and complementing the buildings architectural style by having low visual impact. Airbloc was able to offer the ideal solution with the use of LPHW heated air curtains. They run on low speed when the doors are shut and the fan speed rises when doors open. The heat output is controlled by a temperature sensor on each doorway to ensure the correct comfort conditions within the space.

Alumasc provides timely rainwater solution Alumasc Rainwater recently provided a beautiful bespoke rainwater system to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake – weeks ahead of July’s 2014 Open Championship.
As part of key preparations for the worldfamous tournament, the rainwater system on the Clubhouse was in need of some refurbishment, but works had to be carried out within a tight timeframe of eight weeks in order for it to be completed in time for the competition. Alumasc’s Pre-Painted Cast Iron system
was chosen for the massive savings it offers by cancelling out the need for having to paint several coats on site. The specification of a painted factory finish, completely removed the need for post-installation paintwork, saving the Golf Club around 60% on installation time, and 30% on cost. Furber Roofing installed approximately 100 linear metres of Alumasc’s painted Cast Iron Rainwater around all elevations of the Clubhouse, and in order to ensure a result that remained sympathetic to the heritage of the stunning Victorian building, Alumasc manufactured bespokeHolderbats which were colour and design matched to existing products. Alumasc’s pre-painted cast iron range boasts a highly durable four-coat factory finish available in eight standard heritage colours. Lasting up to seven years before re-painting is required, all products carry Alumasc’s certified paint mark to confirm the four-coat system, giving reassurance that the range is fully protected against the elements. 8 www.alumascrainwater.co.uk *

New shopping centre presents no threat to newts Powdertech (Corby) recently completed work on York’s new £90m shopping centre on the outskirts of the city. The shopping centre boasts new stores including John Lewis, Next and Marks and Spencer’s and a range of eating facilities. The site was a year under construction, following a four month delay whilst a growing population of great crested newts were individually caught and re-located to a specially created £300,000 wetland habitat nearby. “We were delighted to find that the environmental credentials of powder coating were particularly relevant to this prestigious job,” says Powdertech (Corby) Sales Director, Richard Besant. “Environmental responsibility is paramount and the developers took the re-housing of the newts very seriously. With
a protected wetland habitat nearby it was satisfying to know that there was no risk of harmful chemicals entering the water system. Powder coatings contain no harmful solvents, VOCs or hazardous waste. And as they are applied in a factory environment rather than on site there is no risk of overspray, leakage or air pollution.” This is a smart and eye-catching new development with ‘vertical gardens’ on the exterior of the Marks & Spencer’s store. Powdertech coated the rain screen cladding alongside these installations with a high quality
powder, providing a performance guarantee of 25 years which the client specifically requested. Powdertech also coated numerous soffit panels and end panels for canopies around the restaurant and refreshments area using Valspar RAL 9010 white matt, RAL 9007 dark metallic grey and RAL 7024 matt grey. 8 www.powdertechcorby.co.uk *

Building Elements Miller Construction completed the building work, with painting contractors the Bell Group tackling the largescale project using products supplied by Crown Trade
Crown Trade tackles university challenge Crown Trade products have won top marks with a major university challenge completed in time for the start of a new term. The first phase of a massive £97m new redevelopment project at Robert Gordon University’s Garthdee Campus in Aberdeen was finished last year. A modern new library along with laboratories, teaching rooms and a refectory have been in full use ever since.
T
he University has centralised its Academic Function to Garthdee, moving many of its departments around Aberdeen into a four-wing building – featuring a nine-floor tower on the West wing, while the North has six floors and the East and South wings have five. This building houses a new library spread over five floors of the West Tower, three lecture theatres,The School of Engineering, The School of Computer Science and Digital Media,The School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences as well as two Research Institutes, Teaching and Research laboratories, together with formal and informal learning and social spaces for students. Miller Construction completed the building work, with painting contractors the Bell Group tackling the large-scale project using products supplied by Crown Trade, Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt and Eggshell, predominantly in a cool white shade. were painted in pastel shades and it’s all worked out well.” Roger McGarry, Aberdeen Branch Manager for the Bell Group, said: “The new campus at Garthdee is huge, so it was a massive job for us – I’d say one of the biggest the company has ever undertaken. “It’s looking really good and we’re impressed with the result. It’s nice to be able to have done such a big job so well and help create a fresh, clean environment for the students to enjoy.” The Crown Trade products selected throughout the build where chosen with a focus on achieving an easy maintenance finish that can stand the test of time. Crown Paints’ Regional Specification Sales Manager Dave Burkett, said: “Crown Trade Clean Extreme is the perfect sustainable fit for a university as it offers the durability and longevity that allows repetitive cleaning with the added benefit of excellent stain resistance. “That makes it ideal for ‘high traffic’ areas and also extends maintenance cycles by returning to ‘as new’ condition after cleaning – reducing the need for costly redecoration. “We are delighted with the finished job and I’m sure the university will be looking good for years to come.” More information on Crown Paints can be found at the new website for specifiers www.crownpaintspec.co.uk Developed to make the selection of products and services more effective and easier than ever – the site pulls together a raft of online tools and detailed information in a clear and concise format, to underpin a more selective, sustainable and speedier specification process. The website also links to Crown Paints’ popular PaintSpec Finder, which delivers instant and technically-detailed specification plans for exterior and interior projects, through a user-friendly format. This allows users to filter through a great deal of technical information to pinpoint exactly what products – from the specification brands of Crown Trade, Sadolin and Sandtex Trade – they need for their chosen projects. PaintSpec Finder then pulls together the specifications into a report, with a personalised cover sheet showing the customer’s name, the project and the user’s own details, which is then all ready for specifiers to hand to their client or add to their tender or reference documents. 8 www.crownpaintspec.co.uk *
