A
s the UK negotiates its departure from the EU, European legislation may remain an enigmatic matter to many within the construction industry. A substantial amount of EU legislation is implanted in UK construction regulations, and any alterations to EU legislation will remain mandatory for the UK construction trade until after Brexit. In this issue, Chris Meir, Sales Director at Remeha, discusses the forthcoming EU requirements concerning NOx emissions from space heaters. The Energy-Related Products (ErP) directive initially came into play in September 2013, and the largest alteration within its revised counterpart will come into effect on 26th September 2018. As Chris explains:“The aim of the legislation is to ensure that only the most energy-efficient, low NOx heating products are manufactured, specified and installed across the UK and Europe.” To find out more about 2018’s ErP, turn to page 22. Elsewhere in this month’s issue, our portfolio pages are jam-packed with inspiring projects from both the UK and overseas. Our first featured project, The Sill in Northumberland, houses learning and event spaces as well as an 86-bed youth hostel adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Wall. Turn to page 18 for JDDK Architects’ publicallyapproved build. Meanwhile on page 28, Guardian Glass talks FC&A through its most recent project at Hamburg’s recently-unveiled mixed-use facility, the Elbphilharmonie. I hope you enjoy this edition. New halls at the Messe Dornbirn exhibition centre illuminated The modern architecture and expansive new areas of the Messe Dornbirn exhibition centre fuse impressive aesthetics with practical functionality. The spectacular and imposing buildings are showcased by an innovative lighting concept from Zumtobel, which was carefully drafted to meet the very special
requirements of the project. The fundamental idea behind the new presentation and event halls was to create one large entity by deliberately bringing
together the different exhibition spaces, foyers and delivery centre. The result is a truly monolithic structure, more than 170m in length, almost 70m wide and 17m high – a ‘black box’ with unmistakable bright red ellipses carved into the building. The grandiose vision of Marte.Marte

architects, shaped by force and restraint, took the honours in a design competition involving 10 participants. The power and dimensions of the spaces are key factors. The ceiling construction of the building complex is made up of 65 laminated timber beams that each measure 66m.These rest on 11m-high wooden supports, which stand at 1.8m intervals along the length of the halls.Wood also plays a major role in the interior, with concrete additionally used where appropriate. The western main facade features elliptical delivery yards and entrance areas, while an
impressive 14m-high elliptical doorway welcomes visitors to the inner area of the complex. The vivid black wooden interiors of hall 9 and hall 11, the largest space of its kind in the county of Vorarlberg with a total area of 4800m2, offer the ideal setting for a wide variety of different events. This powerful mass of Seite 2/5 black is broken up by the elliptical entrances, painted in the red of the exhibition centre to create a striking colour combination that passes seamlessly into the somewhat more formal settings of hall 10 and hall 12. The special challenge for the lighting solution is not only the
variety of functional areas but also the incredible dimensions of the halls, boasting lengths of 75m and room heights of 11m. In addition, the solutions need to be efficient and needed to fulfil specific architectural requirements, such as the visual staging of prominent sections of the external facade and the precise, even flexible, illumination of the entire halls – despite the enormous ceiling heights. Zumtobel solved these tricky tasks with innovative customised fittings from the TECTON Balanced White and PANOS infinity lighting ranges. www.zumtobel.com/gb-en

Architect in Profile After studying architecture and urban design at Oxford Brookes University, Adrian Griffiths joined Chapman Taylor in 1986 and has been there ever since. In 1998, he was promoted to the board and has evolved the business into an international practice with 18 studios employing over 450 people. from the outset is fundamental. We need to create places where people want to be to spend their time and money. This is what leads to successful regeneration which will stand the test of time.
Please tell us a bit about your career background Having spent my first year out in the architectural department of a design and build company, I then joined Chapman Taylor in 1986 as they were a leading practice in town and city centre regeneration. I have a passion for urban regeneration, which combines both my urban design and architectural training.

What has been your greatest influence and source of inspiration? There have been many influences in my life but, if I had to pick out one, I would choose the Urban Design Group at Oxford Brookes University, who attracted me to undertake their course in conjunction with my architectural training. This group were ahead of the game. What has been your most notable project to date? Picking out one project is hard but I would choose Cabot Circus, Bristol, because I believe this to be a ground-breaking project.
Historically, most retail schemes had been single-use and enclosed with doors at the entrances. Cabot Circus was arguably the first truly mixed-use scheme consisting of retail, restaurants, leisure, community uses, residential, student housing, hotel, offices and car parking. While the value driver is the multi-level retail and leisure element, the development naturally fits within its urban quarter. This project attracts much attention from both our UK and international clients. How do you approach your projects? As most of my projects are large mixed-use masterplans, my aim is to create a development which will provide the public with an experience and a sense of place that they will bond with. The challenge is to think about what happens between the buildings, rather than within them, as this is where the experience is realised. Yes, understanding that getting the commerciality right is of paramount importance, and tenant-mixing the masterplan

What can we expect to see from Chapman Taylor over the next year? Chapman Taylor are committed to continuing to invest in and grow the business, both in the UK and internationally. Our core value is to create buildings, places and spaces that people enjoy. We are industry leaders in the evolution of mixed-use masterplans that deliver a sense of place and the required commercial returns for our clients. Next year you will see more projects at home and abroad which clearly demonstrate that we deliver what we say we will.

Cabot Circus was arguably the first truly mixed-use scheme consisting of retail, restaurants, leisure, community uses, residential, student housing, hotel, offices and car parking
What do you think is the greatest challenge for architects today? Innovation and creativity sits at the heart of what we do, but trying to get the industry to accept new ways of thinking takes time. We work in the commercial sector, which is heavily reliant on developers and institutions to fund projects. Historically, there has been a resistance to mixeduse developments because developers generally specialise in a specific sector. We have to be more creative in how we can maximise value from the land in our city centres, and mixeduse plays an important part in achieving this goal. We are gradually winning the battle but it is a challenge.

T
o meet the need for more space and accommodation due to significant growth in student and staff numbers, Eindhoven University of Technology’s (TU/e) high sustainability ambitions have been recognised for the design to renovate its main building ‘Atlas’, an inspiring example of sustainable and innovative building in line with the principles of the City of Tomorrow. Built between 1959 and 1963, the Atlas building had become very outdated in terms of aesthetics, furnishings and technology. As part of the university’s City of Tomorrow experiment, that will demonstrate the viability of sustainability and comfort within an existing building, the newly-renovated 16-storey building features innovative solutions in terms of energy, smart mobility and health. In a country where 15% of office buildings are vacant, the Atlas building perfectly demonstrates how renovation really does pay off.
Healthy, comfortable building
t
The renovation of the Atlas building is founded on creating the healthiest and most comfortable indoor environment possible for users while, at the same time, minimising the environmental impact of the building and its use. To ensure that this combination of sustainability and comfort would succeed, various innovative solutions were applied, including a high-tech, smart facade and Smart Energy-Saving Lighting (SEL). The new glass membrane facade has windows containing triple anti-glare glazing with internal sun screens. By using state-ofthe-art materials, such as a heat-reflecting coating on both the windows and the screen, this simple membrane facade matches the insulation values of a double-skin facade. At night, the internal blinds can be lowered so that the insulation value of the facade is equivalent to that of an insulated cavity wall. Having been dispensed with a gas connection, all the heating and cooling comes from the campus-wide geothermal system (the largest in Europe) that stores heat and cold separately in the subsurface and accesses it whenever the buildings need to be heated or cooled. In addition, the power requirements of the building are provided by solar panels that supply 500 megawatt hours per year. Initiatives such as the building’s ‘night flush’ – floor-high windows slide outward to cool the building and clean the air in the summer months – along with smart, economical LED lighting and climate control systems which can be adjusted by users with an app, will together reduce the CO2 emission of the building by around 80%, even though the number of residents of the building will more than double.

create the society of the future, said TU/e Executive Board President, Jan Mengelers. In addition to the highest BREEAM score ever for an educational building, the project has achieved the highest score for a renovated building in the Netherlands. BREEAM is the internationallyrecognised measure of sustainability for buildings and communities. More than 530,000 certificates have been issued under BREEAM on more than 24,000 projects around the world, and over 2.2 million buildings and communities are registered for certification. BREEAM is used in more than 70 countries.

Other sustainable measures include the economical reuse of materials, an efficient layout geared to a high level of occupancy and flexibility, energy-efficient elevators, water-saving measures and bicycle storage facilities. To enhance biodiversity, there are special facilities on and around the Atlas building including a bee hotel and nesting boxes for bats, swifts and house sparrows.

Public approval for The Sill The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre, at Once Brewed in Northumberland, opened to the public on July 29th and has since received acclaim from visitors and Northumberland businesses as a whole.
M
ade possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project is the result of an innovative partnership between Northumberland National Park Authority and YHA (England and Wales). The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a National Lottery grant of £7.8m towards The Sill project to help transform how people connect with the landscape. Designed by JDDK Architects for the Northumberland National Park Authority (NNPA) and YHA (England and Wales), the 18-month construction programme began in late 2015. On its opening weekend, The Sill
had over 5000 visitors with superb reviews for both the facilities and building itself. Named after the adjacent Great Whin Sill, the volcanic crag on which Hadrian’s Wall is partly built, the building forms the heart of a seven-year investment plan to increase visitor numbers to the Northumberland National Park and Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage sites. The facility has been designed as a showcase of local pride and passion, featuring an exhibition space, learning and event spaces, a local produce cafe, rural business hub, a world-class 86-bed youth hostel and a shop specialising in local crafts and produce.

But, for many, it’s the actual building that is the main attraction. The result of a truly local enterprise, with more than 3000 local residents taking part in the extensive community consultations during the design period and 90% of the construction employment coming from within the region. The most striking feature is the Whin Sill grass roof, planted to replicate the unique natural grasslands of the surrounding area. The Sill’s fully accessible living roof sweeps gently upwards, giving visitors a bird’s eye vantage point across one of the UK’s most magnificent landscapes and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall.
Sustainability in Development The facility has been designed as a showcase of local pride and passion
The building forms the heart of a seven-year investment plan to increase visitor numbers to the Northumberland National Park and Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage sites
JDDK Project Architect, Alison ThorntonSykes, commented: “The Sill is inspired by the Great Whin Sill, Northumberland’s internationally-renowned geological feature, and grows from the landscape that surrounds it. An aerial view of the wider landscape shows these dramatic geological outcrops as diagonal ripples in the landscape. The building is developed as another ripple rising out of the landscape so that the diagonal flowing lines of the building echo the natural undulations and outcrops in the landscape. “We hosted a series of open events and workshops where we discussed site layout, materials and architectural style. The participative design process gave the local community a chance to get involved, voice their opinions and feel some ownership
of the project. It also allowed us to draw on a vast wealth of local knowledge and expertise.” The building has also been designed on sustainable principles to target a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, including orientation to maximise on solar gains in some of the public spaces while offices are placed to the north to prevent overheating. A central atrium provides daylight into the heart of the building while allowing a summertime natural ventilation strategy and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery in the winter. The south-facing entrance canopy provides solar shading to the glazed frontages of the classrooms and main entrance while also supporting photovoltaics for generating electricity. Solar panels are also incorporated
on the youth hostel roof to provide hot water while the remaining Whin Sill vegetation roof increases biodiversity and reduces surface water runoff. The building also incorporates high levels of insulation and airtightness, low embodied energy materials and enhanced ecology including habitats for bats and birds. As such, the building harmoniously reflects the distinctiveness of the Northumbrian landscape in both its shape and the materials used in its construction, rising from the Northumberland landscape with little impact on the environment, perfectly mirroring its inspiration; the unique landscape of the Hadrian’s Wall corridor. 80% of the external walls of the building are finished in local materials including Whin stone, sandstone and native larch.

Tony Gates, Chief Executive of Northumberland National Park Authority, commented: “The unique concept and rural location of The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre, located in a National Park and within the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage site, presented challenges which required experienced and high-quality architectural design services. JDDK took the building from a list of required uses through an extensive and detailed public engagement process, establishing a public desire for a modern design response in this key heritage location.

This has ultimately led to a building in, and of, the landscape, with its very fabric drawn from the land within which it sits. “The Sill is the largest project of its kind undertaken by a National Park anywhere in the country. Its opening weekend was a huge success and the very first stepping stone towards achieving our vision to excite, inspire and enable people of all ages to understand and explore the landscapes, history, culture and heritage of Northumberland.”
■
Alison added: “The whole team at JDDK are incredibly proud of what we achieved at The Sill. Our brief was for a landmark building which would become the hub of visitor activities, welcoming visitors and supporting communities throughout the Northumberland National Park. Sustainability and public consultation were at the core of the design process with the finished building inspired by the rugged Northumbrian countryside. A contemporary addition to the landscape, respectfully fitting into its natural surroundings.”

Cleaner air by design Tighter requirements for NOx emissions from space heating are set to come into force in 2018, says Chris Meir, Sales Director at Remeha. As air quality rises up the environmental agenda, it’s more important than ever to mind the NOx.

hese are uncertain times for the people of Britain as the nation negotiates its departure from the European Union. One thing, however, is clear – all EU legislation will continue to apply in the UK until after Brexit, which is formally set for March 2019. So it is worth noting the impending mandatory EU requirements relating to nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from space heaters that will be imposed from next year.
22
The Ecodesign of the Energy-related Products Directive (ErP) will enforce maximum NOx emissions of 56mg/kWh for gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) boilers and 120mg/kWh for oil-fired boilers. The legislation, which applies to new equipment up to, and including, 400kW on both newbuild and replacement projects, will come into effect from 26th September 2018. only the most energy-efficient, low NOx heating products are manufactured, specified and installed across the UK and Europe. Clearly, any legislation that tackles energy costs and emissions reduction is to be welcomed. In refurbishment projects the EU predicts a 20% drop in energy bills where older equipment is replaced with ErP-compliant products. The reduced greenhouse gas emissions will also help the UK meet its 80% emissions reduction target by 2050.
Voice of the Industry

Mind the NOx But why the focus on NOx? NOx has come under scrutiny of late as clean air warnings have been issued across a number of UK cities. According to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), most UK cities and towns reached ‘high’ or ‘very high’ levels of pollution at some point last year. Poor air quality has been linked to asthma and lung and heartrelated conditions. Defra measures levels of five pollutants: ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and PM2.5 as well as PM10 particulate matter. Of these, it claims that NOx alone is responsible for the premature death of 23,500 citizens each year in the UK. While road traffic has been identified as a major contributor to outdoor pollution, non-domestic buildings also typically emit NOx. According to statistics from the City of London Corporation, 38% of NOx emissions in the Square Mile come from gas for heating buildings. The introduction of maximum NOx emissions from heating is therefore an important step towards achieving cleaner, less polluted air.
The next steps
Of course, designing for low NOx heating is not a new concept. The London Plan, for example, already recommends the use of low NOx boilers within borough council and City of London buildings. Then there’s BREEAM, the environmental assessment scheme, which has certified and rated the sustainability of buildings since 1990. Its Pol 2 emissions category aims “to encourage the supply of heat from a system that minimises NOx emissions, and therefore reduces pollution of the local environment”. It awards a maximum of three credits for a heating plant with a dry NOx emission level of up to or less than 40mg/kWh.These low NOx credits are added to the results from the other categories, ranging from energy to ecology, to provide a final building rating. From a commercial perspective, higher BREEAM accreditation brings economic and environmental advantages as these buildings tend to generate environments that are more comfortable and more sustainable to operate.
So what are the implications for specifiers? On new-build and refurbishment projects alike, the focus should be on ensuring that only ErP-certified. high-efficiency low NOx heating products are specified. In older buildings, consider replacing any ageing or inefficient equipment with the latest ultra-low NOx condensing boilers. Even when well maintained, a 25-year-old boiler will achieve 70% gross efficiency at best and comparatively high NOx emissions. The tighter ErP regulations are effectively driving a move to condensing boilers. While switching to condensing boiler technology can and should be seamless, take time to plan ahead to ensure a smooth transition. Size the heating load of the building accurately to meet its use. A well-sized boiler will help create a more comfortable, productive environment and improve the energy performance of the building. With existing buildings, take the opportunity to resize the load – the building and how it is used may have changed since the last boiler installation. Good control is essential to optimise boiler and system performance, so ensure that effective controls are included at the design stage. This will keep heating efficiencies high and NOx emissions low. Finally, take time to involve manufacturers at the outset when their specialist input is most valuable. Early engagement can ensure that the most appropriate equipment is specified and that the design is robust. Addressing the energy performance of the built environment remains one of the greatest challenges facing the nation. ErP might just be the driver we need to tackle air pollution and energy waste. With the ready availability of cost-effective, ErP-compliant condensing boilers, backed by knowledgeable support from manufacturers, the tighter requirements are entirely achievable. And if the result is cleaner air to breathe, we’ll all be winners.
Future-proof heating While the crackdown on NOx does place more stringent demands on new and replacement boilers, forward-thinking manufacturers are ahead of the game. In fact, for some manufacturers, reducing emissions has been a priority for years with the result that many low NOx condensing boilers are now in their third or fourth generation. Advanced models, like Remeha’s comprehensive Quinta range, have been engineered from the outset to achieve maximum high efficiencies and low NOx criteria. With high gross efficiencies of up to 98% and ultra-low NOx emissions at or below 40mg/kWh, they meet the EU standard EN 15502 Part 1 2015 Class 6 for NOx.This makes them eligible for maximum BREEAM credits and future-proof to the ErP 2018 requirements. Crucially, they are also certified for operation on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), making them a flexible, viable solution for off-grid projects.

Taking the build off site – the future of construction
Multistorey building panel facade
Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) is used as the foundation for concurrent engineering processes to simplify and fully optimise the structure wherever possible, to reduce manufacturing and assembly costs and to quantify improvements. This process helps to identify, calculate and eliminate waste or inefficiency in the building design. Kevin Riley, board member of the Structural Timber Association and Head of Business Line, LVL, for Stora Enso – discusses why DfMA is becoming an increasingly important consideration.
D
esign for Manufacture and Assembly is an approach that facilitates greater off-site manufacturing – vastly reducing on-site construction. Structural timber buildings are constructed with higher levels of speed and safety – the process delivers both resource and cost efficiencies but does not impede creative design, aspirations or compromise on quality. According to the Smart Construction report, researched and published by KPMG, the construction industry has seen a substantial increase in pipeline activity, with greater significance placed on sustainability – playing to the strengths of structural timber systems. Growth is being driven by demand for infrastructure, public and private housing and commercial buildings. While the construction industry is buoyed by predicted growth and expansion, it
24
continues to underperform in four strategic areas: productivity, certainty in delivery, skills shortage and data transparency. Off-site construction – the prefabrication, modularisation and standardisation of construction processes and assets within factory-controlled environments – continues to be quoted across Government and industry as a potential catalyst in meeting these challenges. Off-site structural timber construction, supported by DfMA techniques, offers a viable solution by presenting transformative improvements across the asset lifecycle in time, cost, quality, health and safety. But most importantly, off-site structural timber construction offers predictability. As well as delivering projects faster, lowering costs together with improving quality and sustainability, the use of DfMA techniques also results in better operational and in-use outcomes. The recent RIBA
Find this issue plus much more on the fc&a app and fca-magazine.com
Plan of Work incorporating Designing for Manufacture and Assembly was developed to help the industry take the next evolutionary step towards ‘assembly’ rather than ‘construction’. Historically, many have questioned why the built environment sector does not reflect the manufacturing methods of the aerospace and automotive industries; where cars and planes are assembled in huge factories predominantly by robots. Innovations in panelised timber systems and modular timber components, supported by new off-site manufacturing technology with semi-automated assembly production processes now make this achievable to some extent. However, size limitations are dictated by transportation restrictions and there has to be a mindset and process change, now that buildings no longer have to be constructed in situ – this is where the RIBA Plan of Works and Assembly overlay comes in.
Technical Focus The plan identifies seven core stages of the build process, from the preparation of the brief and concept, to technical design and construction stages. These stages are mapped out against core objectives such as the DfMA strategy, the integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and procurement tasks for DfMA. Crucial to DfMA principles, information transfer and share, designing with BIM is a collaborative way of working, underpinned by the digital technologies which unlock more efficient methods of creating and maintaining assets. BIM embeds key product details and asset data to create 3D models that can be used for effective management of information throughout a project lifecycle – from earliest concept through to operation. 3D models can be shared by construction partners with further detailing being added along the design journey. BIM technology and CNC machines ensure structural components are manufactured to exacting tolerances to guarantee the details of connections are precise. This is of particular relevance in hybrid structures where high levels of technical advancement, innovation and rigorous planning through a strict programme of works are required to finish builds on time. At a time when our industry is facing a skills shortage, taking the build off site into a factory-controlled environment reduces the levels of resource required and is not dependent on traditional construction skills. Developing solutions that are ‘assembled’ rather than ‘constructed’ offers the prospect of using fewer people in a more controlled and safer environment.

To avoid making matters worse, ‘mantelpiece’ first drafts of any response before sending
Gemma Carson is a Partner at law firm Wright Hassall and heads the commercial litigation team. She specialises in commercial litigation and has a wealth of experience dealing with all types of commercial contract disputes, arbitration proceedings and professional negligence claims. Gemma regularly writes on technical matters relating to contract disputes, able to explain often complex legal arguments in simple terms that make issues easy to understand for those facing the challenge of running their own business.
Mantelpiece your response to a complaint…or make matters worse Standards within the construction industry are constantly being reviewed to ensure building works comply with regulations and quality expectations. However, despite the efforts taken to meet or exceed these standards, there will still always be complaints forthcoming. Many architects and contractors may see this as an unjustified attack on their good name, or a tactic to avoid payment. This may spur them to defend their business by ‘having it out’ with the complainant.
26
“Acting when a complaint first emerges, it can prevent it from developing into a major problem when positions become entrenched. “Face-to-face meetings help resolve issues before they can escalate. Raise the matter directly or if it feels more serious, seek legal advice before making contact. “Also, retain all relevant information, documents and correspondence relating to the complaint. “Early intervention can prove effective when a dispute cannot be resolved easily as it adopts more collaborative methods of dispute resolution than traditional adjudicated court proceedings. Benefits include: Speed: disputes can often be resolved more quickly Costs: the costs can be significantly lower than traditional court proceedings Flexibility: offer more flexible and commercially-focused resolutions Relationships: often allow the parties to preserve working/commercial relationships Publicity: allow a confidential resolution process which can be beneficial and often obligatory

Concurrency: can often be used in conjunction with other methods when needed.
Professional help “Dispute resolution advice is very effective when delivered soon after the complaint is received as lawyers can offer strategic legal guidance whilst preserving the commercial position for the future. “Remember, making a rash statement or decision to stop providing your services may cause a serious breach of contract. In simple terms, a breach of contract can entitle the party affected by it to terminate the contract and then bring legal proceedings against you for damages. “Finally, where positions have become entrenched and legal proceedings seem the only option, work with experienced lawyers who understand commercial disputes and demonstrate a commitment to reaching an early, commercial and costeffective resolution.”

emma Carson, Head of Dispute Resolution at law firm Wright Hassall, says disregarding the consequences of a knee-jerk reaction could be harmful:“We see people react badly to complaints, firing off an angry email or arguing their case on the phone. “When emotions are running high, it is easy to get involved in a heated debate about the rights and wrongs and mistakes and failures of one party or another, and things can escalate quickly. “Real problems arise when allegations or threats to take certain steps are made, without due consideration to the terms originally agreed when the two parties entered a commercial relationship. “To avoid making matters worse, ‘mantelpiece’ first drafts of any response before sending. Given time to cool down, most people will see their impulsive email as inappropriate. “Check whether a service agreement and/ or a contract exists between the parties and read them carefully as there may be relevant contractual terms that could help to manage the situation.

laminated curved single glazing for the loggias (covered exterior galleries). One of the challenges was developing the curved glass elements of the facade. Up to that time, nobody has ever bent glass panes of that complex 3D geometry. The next challenge was to maintain the functions of the different coatings of the glass during the manufacturing process. The glazing of the facade consists of a low-E coating, a solar control coating, chrome mirror dots and a ceramic silk-screen pattern. The solar control coating and the chrome dots were vital in achieving the customer’s performance requirements. Gartner was concerned that the high temperatures in the bending oven would destroy these layers or adversely affect their performance. “We talked with many companies, but Guardian was the only one that could offer a base layer that would guarantee that the sun protection layer maintains its functions during the manufacturing process,” says Karl Lindenmaier, Senior Project Manager Elbphilharmonie at Josef Gartner. “In close collaboration with Guardian, we were able to achieve and maintain the customer’s requirements.”

Design & Desire The SunGuard Solar Light Blue 52 coating provided the possibility of applying the ceramic silk-screen pattern directly on the coating
Guardian Glass’ products have enabled a complex curved facade on Hamburg’s new stunning concert hall
As well as working with Gartner during the facade design phase, the Guardian Glass team also worked closely with curved glass processor, SunGlass Srl. This ensured that the curved glass met the architect’s requirements in terms of performance and aesthetics (i.e. shapes of the curved glass, appearance and colour reflections).
Products The architect practice, Herzog & de Meuron, selected Guardian ExtraClear float glass as a base glass for the whole facade for its combination of transparency, aesthetics and performance. Guardian also supplied its coated solar control glass, SunGuard Solar Light Blue 52. This product provided sufficient stability during the glass bending process, while also meeting the architect’s requirements. In a standard insulating glass unit*, SunGuard Solar Light Blue 52 provides a visible light transmission of 47%. It also has a low solar factor of 36% to help reducing demands on the building’s air conditioning and controlling the temperature inside the building.

Guardian also supplied its coated solar control glass, SunGuard Solar Light Blue 52
Furthermore, the SunGuard Solar Light Blue 52 coating provided the possibility of applying the ceramic silk-screen pattern directly on the coating. To provide complete performance for the curved IGU windows, Guardian supplied its ClimaGuard DT thermally insulating coated glass. This product combines neutrality, thermal insulation, durability and easy processing. It offered a remarkably high stability during the glass bending process, while, again, meeting the architect’s requirements
Technical support services In addition to supplying the highperformance coated glass products, Guardian also provided technical support including thermal and spectrophotometric glazing calculation data as well as thermal stress analyses. Using its vast experience and knowledge base, Guardian was also able to provide invaluable suggestions and guidance on glass bending and ceramic printing of coated glass.

Roofing The revised code of practice introduces new design wind load calculations based upon Eurocodes
The highest of standards
Since fixing specifications vary so greatly and are based on many factors, it is even more important that every roof is fixed in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations
In August 2014, the British Standard Code of Practice for Slating and Tiling (BS 5534) recommendations were updated to improve the overall security of traditional slated and tiled pitched roofs. Sadly, site practice is still lagging behind – resulting in voided warranties and, at worst, significant roof failures. Dr Kevin Ley, Technical Manager of Redland, explains.
T
he first iteration of BS 5534, the Code of Practice for Slating and Tiling in the UK was CP 142, published in September 1942. It set the standards for recommended best practice for slating and tiling, covering all aspects of pitched roofing above the rafters. It was first codified as a British Standard in 1978 and variously updated since. Most recently revised in August 2014, changes included the introduction of mechanical fixing of all hips and ridge tiles, new wind uplift resistance requirements for underlays; and a considerable increase in the tile fixings particularly for interlocking tiles which are the most widely used. This increase has been brought about by a simultaneous increase in the minimum tile fixings required for tile security and safety along with increased design wind loads, by up to 100% in some cases. Consequently, all single lapped, interlocking tiles on a roof now need to be nailed, clipped or both depending on exposure. BS 5534:2014 applies to all pitched roofing, whether new-build, re-roofing or repair work, and came into full force in March 2015. Although not legally mandatory, compliance with BS 5534:2014 is considered not only best practice, but also provides the best defence in the event of failures or disputes. In the newbuild sector, the NHBC is especially vigilant in
32
respect of the standard and, since July 2015, all new housing projects, regardless of size or phase; must comply with BS 5534:2014 to qualify for its 10-year Buildmark Warranty. Despite the new code of practice being two years old, many new roofs are being installed that do not conform to the standard. For those designing or inspecting pitched roofs then, there is a need to be aware of the main provisions in order to ensure specifications are being met.
Mechanical fixing of ridge and hip tiles The revised code of practice states that the use of mortar alone can no longer be relied on as a method of fixing as it has been deemed to provide no reliable adhesion. Mortar can still be used but only if accompanied by mechanical fixings. This means if mortar is used then additional materials are needed including a ridge/hip batten with fixings to rafters, and mechanical fixings for securing the ridge/hip tiles to the ridge/hip batten. While the above secures the ridge/hip tiles it does not eliminate the risk of mortar failure, resulting in roof leakage and subsequent repair work as the mortar can still crack and drop out of the mortar bed.A simple way of avoiding all the hassle associated with mortar is to use the alternative of modern dry-fix ridge/hip solutions instead.

Tile fixings When the wind blows over a roof, uplift forces act on both the underlay and the tiles. The revised code of practice introduces new design wind load calculations based upon Eurocodes, resulting in greatly increased design wind loads – up to 100% in some cases – which means a greater requirement for tile clips in manufacturers’ fixing specifications. Since fixing specifications – the location, number and type of nails and clips required – vary so greatly and are based on many factors, including geographical location and type of building, it is even more important that every roof is fixed in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations, ideally with a site-specific fixing specification. Historic experience should not be relied upon!
Roofing Underlays
■
The issue of wind uplift resistance of roofing underlays or resistance to ‘ballooning’, as it is sometimes called, and its consequences for underlays is addressed in the new standard. The primary purpose of a roofing underlay is to reduce the wind load acting on the roof tiles by taking a significant proportion of the wind load itself. To do this successfully, it must not stretch to the point where it can touch the underside of the roof tiles when subjected to wind pressure. If a roofing underlay does stretch, or ‘balloon’, so that it touches the back of the roof tiles, then it ceases to perform this primary function as the wind load taken by the underlay is transferred onto the roof tiles. The tile manufacturer’s fixing specifications do not allow for this additional load and roof tiles can subsequently be blown off the roof during a storm even if they are fixed in accordance with the tile manufacturer’s fixing specification. A related problem concerns the bursting open of unsealed underlay laps when subjected to wind pressure which can also cause the removal of roof tiles. Both the old and new code of practice recommend that a timber batten be installed over the horizontal lap between courses of underlay to prevent the risk of this happening. In practice, this can be achieved either by increasing the horizontal lap of the underlay to coincide with an existing tiling batten or installing an additional batten also known as a ‘fly’ batten over the horizontal lap. Many roofing contractors do not like installing these additional battens as they can cause a trip hazard when working on the roof so the preferred alternative is to increase the underlay lap which has the disadvantage of increasing the amount of underlay required as well as requiring more care during setting out of the roof. The 2014 version of BS 5534 introduced a new single test that measures the ability of an underlay to resist stretching when exposed to wind pressure. These test results are then used to establish which types of underlay are suitable for the various regions around the UK. Before specification, it would be prudent to ensure that any preferred underlay has the necessary checks and testing in place to ensure it is fit for use for the project in question. These changes are a significant step forward from what has been the baseline standard for roofing practice in the UK hitherto.

Schöck’s thermal break solutions are fit for purpose, are manufactured using insulation and do meet the relevant Building Regulations
Designing effective thermal breaks “Man darf nie beim Alten stehen bleiben” (“You must never remain standing still”), a quote that visitors are greeted with when they are guided through the innovative museum of German-based thermal break solutions manufacturer, Schöck. These are the wise words of the company’s Founder, Eberhard Schöck, and this message is unmistakably the ethos behind the company’s groundbreaking thermal solutions.
B Schöck’s success in innovation and production is evident through the vast volume of thermal break solutions it produces

ack in July, FC&A was invited to the specialist’s headquarters in the picturesque, quaint German town of Baden-Baden, where the birth of Eberhard Schöck’s thermal break creation began its life. produces on a daily basis for construction sites in every corner of the globe. Globally recognised amongst the most prestigious of clients from within the construction industry – having supplied solutions for projects from London to Moscow – Schöck is constantly developing its production line to ensure its products meet the everevolving, stringent Building Regulations
Balconies
By including a thermal break solution, the thermal losses at the connections of a structural element will be significantly reduced
Schöck’s Isokorb range also acts as a load-bearing element for cantilever balconies meaning the Isokorb itself forms part of a building’s structure
One example of such a ‘thermal solution’ commonly being used within UK architecture was brought up by Schöck’s UK Managing Director, Chris Willett. “Architects often don’t fully understand thermal breaks,” he explained, “and, as a result, thermal ‘pads’ are commonplace in UK architecture. As the industry demands for thermal efficiency become greater, under certain conditions, pad solutions may not be sufficient to meet the Part L requirements of the UK Building Regulations in balcony construction. “While architects may think that they are specifying a thermal break that meets the requirements, this may not be the case. Schöck’s thermal break solutions, on the other hand, are independently verified to be fit for purpose, are manufactured using insulation and do meet the relevant Building Regulations.” It is evident from Chris’ disclosure that there is still a need to educate the architectural industry in the requirements of the Building Regulations to ensure correct specification of thermal break solutions, that are proven to meet Part L.
t
in countries such as Poland, Germany, Switzerland and the UK, to name but a few. Schöck’s main product – its thermal break solution, Isokorb – was a concept conceived by Eberhard Schöck.The notion arose whilst the German entrepreneur was on a skiing vacation in Switzerland. Eberhard encountered a Swiss hotel accommodating a number of balconies and expressed concerns over energy loss and internal mould from within the establishment. Four years after his discovery, Eberhard launched the company’s very first thermal break solution, Isokorb. Since Eberhard’s discovery, there has been an increase in awareness around the importance of thermal breaks, however, what was apparent from FC&A’s visit is that many industry professionals – particularly within the UK – are still unclear of the importance of thermal breaks and the impact they can have on our buildings. This disregard of thermal breaks within structural balcony connections may stem from a lack of understanding from within the UK construction industry or by using inappropriate ‘thermal break’ solutions out of ignorance.

Balconies So, what is a thermal break? By definition, a thermal break is a localised area with a higher thermal conductivity than the adjacent areas – in other words, a material of high conductivity, such as a balcony or any other form of a structural attachment, that penetrates an insulation layer. The use of a thermal bridge within a structure will enable a positive heat transfer through the structure and permit cooler surface temperatures on the warm side of the structure. However, negligence when it comes to thermal breaks can lead to several repercussions, namely: Higher energy use for heating and cooling, resulting in inflated utility bills Cold surfaces, leading to end-user discomfort Condensation, which can lead to corrosion and decay Mould growth, which comes with health concerns and impacts the durability of building materials Importantly, it is not compliant with UK Building Regulations. If architects and construction professionals are not considering thermal breaks, they will not meet the carbon emission targets set out in Part L.
By thermally separating an exterior and interior structure a thermal break is created between the two structural components
Isokorb is available in 10,000 standard variations
Schöck’s solutions By thermally separating an exterior and interior structure (such as balconies and parapets) you will be creating a thermal break between the two structural components. By including a thermal break solution, the thermal losses at the connections of a structural element will be significantly reduced. Schöck’s thermal break solution, Isokorb, is produced using expanded polystyrene (EPS), with a minimum thickness of 80mm. EPS is used for the main body of the product, while reinforcement bars are used to conserve the integrity between the structural elements of a building. As well as boasting heat-insulating properties, Schöck’s Isokorb range also acts as a load-bearing element for cantilever balconies meaning the Isokorb itself forms part of a building’s structure. The range is available in 10,000 standard variations – adhering to Building Regulations in multiple countries. Comprising five main solutions, including bespoke options, the range includes: Isokorb 80mm – applicable for concreteto-concrete applications, with an 80mmthick insulation layer Isokorb XT 120mm – again, applicable for concrete-to-concrete applications, with a 120mm-thick insulation layer
36
Isokorb Type KS and QS – for concreteto-steel and concrete-to-timber applications, with an 80mm thickness insulation layer Isokorb Type KST – for retrofit applications Isokorb R – for the renovation of concrete-to-concrete and concrete-tosteel applications.
Educating the industry Schöck’s in-house-designed software, available for architects and construction professionals, is able to calculate heat loss in buildings according to the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) requirements and is tailored to UK weather conditions. Industry professionals can delve deeper into the world of thermal breaks at The Institute of Structural Engineers’ (IStructE) event in November where Schöck will be hosting a workshop on thermal solutions.

The event is free to attend and architects will can gain CPD points for participating.
Enhancing energy efficiency Schöck’s aim is to improve the energy efficiency of buildings both in the UK and internationally, and its Isokorb range is backed up with British Board of Agrément (BBA) approval across the range, as well as extensive thermal modelling research from Oxford Brookes University. An innovation that initially began its life in 1983, and took approximately 35 to 40 minutes to install, has evolved into an easyto-handle product taking around three to five minutes to position. It’s not often that many find a solution to construction issues, however, Eberhard Schöck has proved that innovation can lead to the most effective results.

Drainage & Landscaping
The new GeoCeramica porcelain paving range from Brett Landscaping deftly avoids the problem of bonding porcelain to the Type 1 sub-bases commonly encountered in the UK
Adopting a UK approach to porcelain Here Andrew Gill, Marketing Manager at Brett Landscaping, discusses the current issues facing installers and end-users of porcelain in the UK.
Man-made porcelain paving, heated in a kiln to extremely high temperatures, gives the tiles a number of properties that make them highly attractive as a garden, patio or driveway material
T
here have been several trends which have affected landscaping design and specification over the last five years or so. Some, such as a greater adoption of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), are driven by functionality. Others, like the rising popularity of porcelain paving, are the result of a greater combination of factors.
38
Whilst there has been consistent interest over the past three years, porcelain is still viewed by some specifiers, designers and contractors with a degree of apprehension. The consensus amongst this group seems to be that porcelain is being held back by its reputation for being difficult to install over a Type 1 sub-base, which is a common installation method in the UK.

Man-made porcelain paving, heated in a kiln to extremely high temperatures, gives the tiles a number of properties that make them highly attractive as a garden, patio or driveway material. One advantage of porcelain is that it is hardwearing. This means that the moss, lichen along with everyday stains and dirt which naturally accumulate on paving over time does not adhere to the material easily. This means that porcelain paving can be maintained easily with a mild detergent and a stiff brush to keep it looking pristine. The fact that porcelain is manmade also offers a more subjective advantage in that it has a more consistent colour uniformity than natural stone, which can have a wide variance even if taken from the same quarry. In these regards, porcelain offers a great aesthetic, similar to more desirable landscaping materials like natural stone, but with a host of great benefits that makes the man-made alternative difficult to ignore for end-users, designers and specifiers alike. Add to this the ability to create differing aesthetics such as different types of stone or even timber planks and you have a highly attractive product indeed. That is why we offer a variety of porcelain paving in our domestic range to reflect interest in this material.
Drainage & Landscaping
One advantage of porcelain is that it is hard-wearing
Until now the difficulty of installing porcelain has been unavoidable, as it is the result of the properties of the material itself. The characteristics which give porcelain a number of advantages also creates issues for installers. The problem lies in the impermeability that results from porcelain’s density. Whilst this means that the material is resistant to staining, lichen growth and moss accumulation, it also means that porcelain is vulnerable to Britain’s cold weather patterns as a permanent bond to fix the slabs is hard to achieve. Anyone who is familiar with installing porcelain paving will tell you that it is prone to coming loose from the cement substrate during the colder months. This is the result of freeze/thaw cycles weakening the bond
between the substrate, which holds water, and the surface slab. Each time the substrate freezes and thaws, the moisture inside of the structure used to hold the slabs in place expands and then contracts, putting strain on the bond holding the porcelain in place. With porcelain, this freeze/thaw issue can become a major problem, especially in a temperate climate such as the UK. It has been suggested that applying a primer to the back of the slabs before adhering them to a mortar base helps – but what is really required is a drainage mortar base to eliminate the risk from freeze-thaw.Although now a common practice in Europe, this approach is unfortunately more difficult and also adds significant cost to the finished paving.
■
The fact that porcelain is man-made also offers a more subjective advantage in that it has a more consistent colour uniformity than natural stone
Fortunately, there is now an easier and more efficient way of enjoying all the benefits of porcelain, without having to deal with all of the potential problems. The new GeoCeramica porcelain paving range from Brett Landscaping deftly avoids the problem of bonding porcelain to the Type 1 sub-bases commonly encountered in the UK, whilst on the surface providing the end-user with the beautiful porcelain paving tiles which have become so desirable. Each GeoCeramica porcelain surface slab is inseparably bonded directly to a drainage mortar base during the manufacturing process, creating beautiful paving which will last for years. Crucially for contractors, GeoCeramica can be installed as if it was a regular paving slab. A bed of sand is all that is required to lay GeoCeramica over a conventional Type 1 sub-base. The implications of this innovation are significant. Contractors and specifiers can recommend beautiful porcelain paving for their projects with the confidence that they are reliable and will not become a point of contention with end-users and clients in future. Furthermore, clients may be more enthusiastic towards using porcelain for their projects, safe in the knowledge that the material will not cause them problems. Another innovation that GeoCeramica brings to the UK landscaping market is Bluestone, a 60mm-thick slab, which means that for the first time porcelain paving can be used on a driveway. This creates new aesthetic opportunities for creative architects to exploit. Combining the 60mm Bluestone with the 10mm and 40mm thicknesses available across the rest of the range allows for the use of porcelain both inside and outside of the home, allowing designers to create a truly striking insideoutside aesthetic. All of these innovations equate to a product which is simple and quick to install for installers, and desirable for consumers. This means that we can now enjoy the benefits of porcelain such as simple maintenance and great style, in all seasons, with no need to worry about the paving coming loose. The introduction of GeoCeramica could well change the way that porcelain is viewed as a material, whilst giving designers and specifiers more options. A great leap forward for a material held back, until now, by practicality.

Timber
Offering excellent thermal performance, Pavatex panels are manufactured with tongue and groove edges
Is woodfibre insulation taking root in the mainstream construction sector? Andrew Mitchell from NBT discusses the benefits of woodfibre insulation and why it’s moving beyond the specialist timber and ‘eco’ construction market and into the mainstream.
A
mongst those who champion sustainable construction, natural materials and renewable resources, the benefits of woodfibre insulation are a given. Manufactured from the off-cuts of felled timber grown in managed forests, woodfibre ticks all the environmentallyfriendly boxes of preserving resources and creating a built environment that does not damage our natural world. And, like all timber used in construction, every tonne of woodfibre insulation manufactured locks up carbon for at least 100 years, off-setting any associated CO2 emissions, including transport, entirely. This could make a significant contribution to the Government’s eco targets. All of this makes a compelling case for environmental projects, Passivhaus builds and timber construction. Indeed, the Structural Timber Association has recently advised that only ‘breathable’ insulation, such as woodfibre, should be used for projects of solid wood construction, such as CLT.
40
Despite its many environmental benefits, however, it would be a mistake to think that ‘eco-friendly’ is woodfibre’s only USP. Far from it. In fact, it’s the performance, ease of use and installed cost benefits of woodfibre insulation that are really making specifiers sit up and take notice, supporting a transition from niche solution to mainstream option.
Improved performance Let’s leave woodfibre insulation’s environmental credentials to one side for a moment and look at building performance. Increasingly stringent Part L regulations may have placed greater focus on better insulated buildings that waste less energy, but there remains a worrying disparity between buildings’ designed performance and what they actually achieve post-occupation. Many buildings simply do not deliver their designed U-values post-completion – despite being heavily specified with ample insulation – because the structure is not airtight. If thermal bridging occurs
Find this issue plus much more on the fc&a app and fca-magazine.com
at the joints between the insulation panels (Y-values), the designed U-value is eroded resulting in a finished building with poor thermal performance. Woodfibre insulation provides a solution to the issue of thermal bridging as it is applied as an external ‘wrap’ to the building. This solution is not possible with synthetic insulations on timber buildings due in part to their low density but, more critically, because they can trap moisture which in turn can compromise the integrity of the building, or the health of the occupants. Offering excellent thermal performance thanks to timber’s inherent properties as a natural insulator, Pavatex panels are manufactured with tongue and groove edges for a neat, secure and windtight fit. Alongside woodfibre’s performance benefits as an insulator, it also offers excellent breathability. The result is not only a more thermallyefficient building, but also an extended lifecycle for the building fabric and significantly increased comfort levels for the occupier.
Reduced costs While the cost of heating a building continues to rise and energy wastage comes at a high monetary and environmental price, the over-specification and under-performance of conventional insulation continues. Why? Because most specifiers would rather use what they know than try something new; particularly when they expect its natural and renewable credentials to be accompanied by a premium price tag. In reality, however, woodfibre insulation’s performance enables a simpler roof or wall build up, significantly reducing the cost of both materials and labour. Consequently, switching to woodfibre insulation can deliver both savings and performance during the build and throughout the lifecycle of the building.

Interiors RCR Arquitectes and P. Llimona designed an organic space full of curves and narrow aisles and required the slabs to be cut down into six smaller pieces
An air of mystery The story of ENIGMA started with renowned Catalan Chef Albert Adrià’s vision to create a ‘frozen and enigmatic’ restaurant project that was to reflect his cuisine as well as his career. His vision took shape when 2017 Pritzker Prize winner, RCR Arquitectes, drew its design idea in watercolours and decided to bring it to life with the help of Neolith by TheSize, manufacturer and designer of sintered stone.
T
hrough an incredibly creative and close collaboration, as well as Neolith’s expertise and technical know-how, the enchanting, out-ofthis-world interior of ENIGMA was created. Having worked on the design proposal for three years, Adrià wanted to ensure the perfect outcome for his passionate project. Well-known for his experimental cuisine and surprising menus, the chef wanted to create an immersive environment to captivate his guests. The chef’s style of cooking and menu is heavily influenced by the surroundings, hence, the interior had to reflect that. “The type of cuisine we make is determined by space. If we were, for example, surrounded by nature, we would cook entirely different dishes,” he explains.
42
From paper to slab The pivotal moment in terms of design came when RCR in collaboration with Architect, Pau Llimona, drew a watercolour painting the size of two A3 papers, which was to be applied to the floors, walls, bathrooms, kitchen worktops, cabinetry and air extraction systems. However, a watercolour design has not been done on sintered stone before, thus posing an unprecedented challenge. Carlos Garcia, Product Designer at TheSize, explains: “We had to expand the original design, all the while trying not to lose the quality of definition offered by the original drawing. Each pixel was equal to 2m of final floor.” Through R&D, Neolith developed the technology to re-create the design onto slabs, producing a perfect replica of the drawing.

Once this was achieved, an exact colour match had to be sourced, as the required green and blue tones are unusual hues for sintered surfaces. The intensity of the colours had to fit in with the other materials and decorations throughout the restaurant as to achieve a unified environment, fully submerging diners. Using Neolith’s proprietary digital printing decoration technology NDD (Neolith Digital Design), the architect’s design brief was fully met. The architect wanted every slab to be of an irregular texture like Neolith’s Riverwashed, but with a subtle shine to provide a surface that is multisensory – interesting to the eye and inviting to touch. “Neolith is a contemporary material with many properties. We have

The architect wanted every slab to be of an irregular texture
Installation The floor presented the biggest challenge because of its sheer size. Each slab is unique and had to be perfectly put together in order to deliver a continuous design. However, the only way to get a full picture of the puzzle required some creative problem-solving and a change of perspective. Neolith initially installed the entire floor off-site and used a drone to take images from above, thus ensuring that there were no inconsistencies. RCR Arquitectes and P. Llimona designed an organic space full of curves and narrow aisles and required the slabs to be cut down into six smaller pieces, the smallest being only 3cm wide. Absolute precision was key to guarantee the uniformity of the watercolour design. Taking inspiration from a map, a coordinate system was put into place,
uniquely labelling every single slab to know its exact position in the project. This way, the installers on location were able to piece the interior together like a puzzle.
This is ENIGMA Albert Adrià, RCR Arquitectes and Neolith are all award winners within their respective industries. Together they created a project that is truly spectacular in terms of design, material quality, food and, surprisingly, fashion. Completing the scene is the ENIGMA staff, whose uniforms have also been designed by RCR and P. Llimona. ENIGMA truly is full of surprises the architects say: “We like the idea that it is an ‘enigma’, which is difficult to explain. It is an enveloping space that melts and disappears; almost a labyrinth. Between materiality and conformation, a whole series of organic movements is created. Shadows, transparencies and a watery presence; nebular.”
■
been so surprised by its possibilities that we are now using it for other projects,” a spokesperson for RCR explains.

The evolution of Firman Glass
Firman Glass has evolved over the previous 40 years from a replacement glazing business in the early ‘70s to one of the leading independent glass processors, tougheners and structural glazing operations in the country.
O
perating from Harold Wood in Essex and with a current turnover in excess of £6m, glass is produced 24-hours a day and six days a week. Stocking a comprehensive range of glasses from 4-19mm of clear float and low-iron, tinted glasses, fire resistant glass, mirrors and being able to process these using modern CNC cutting and edgework equipment, offers clients a one-stop shop for all their glass requirements. Float glass is made by combining several components – sand, soda ash, dolomite, limestone, salt cake and cullet. This mix is heated by gas burners to approximately 2900°F, and then allowed to cool slowly for delivery to the float furnace. The molten glass forms a continuous ribbon that floats
46
on the molten tin with the thickness being regulated by the speed that the glass is drawn through. After the annealing process, the glass appears as the finished product and is cut into stock sizes. This is a very brief description of a complex manufacturing and quality controlled series of processes ending with the stock glass product. Firman Glass takes this stock glass in mainly 6000 x 3210mm sheets and produces a wide range of processed toughened glass products for the architectural glass sector, including back painted glass for the kitchen and bathroom fit-out market, also supplying fire resistant glass products from most of the major European manufacturers.

Processed glass takes on many forms, from simple single panels of float glass with polished edges, to intricately-shaped heavy gauged glass processed on Intermac CNC machines. Glass is toughened using the new North Glass tempering furnace also based at Harold Wood, to maximum sizes of 2750 x 4950mm. This new furnace, includes two bending chambers producing toughened glass bends to varying sizes and radii. Glass is inherently strong and can be used structurally to provide light and space in many situations, combined with the toughening and laminating processes the options for its use are almost limitless. Glass conservatories, bolted glass structures, balustrades, floors, bridges, stair treads and full-height glazed partitions can all be designed using glass as the focus with minimal visible framing. Firman Glass has manufactured highspecification products for projects in the Middle East, Europe and for Apple stores in England.

espite a towering reputation on the global architectural scene, One New Change is Architect Jean Nouvel’s first building in London. As a result of his strikingly diverse and plentiful body of work, Jean Nouvel’s buildings have no easily identifiable signature. His approach is characterised by a conceptual rigour as opposed to an overarching aesthetic. If he does have a signature, it’s one of space and light, not form. is glass: he is fascinated by the effects that can be achieved with it.The Modernist building has 6500 floor-to-ceiling glass panes in varying shades of red, grey and beige, flooding the floors with natural light. 4300 of which are unique pieces. In 2014, Firman Glass was approached by architectural glazing specialist OAG to price for the supply of four replacement walk-on glass floor panels in the One New Change Shopping Centre. At first sight, the sheer size and weight of the panels, the largest in excess

Outsourcing panels Firman Glass is a national glass processor and toughener capable of toughening glass to 3000mm wide x 5000mm long and laminating glass to 2800mm wide x 6000mm long making it one of the UK’s largest manufacturing companies, in terms of size capabilities. Not to be put off by the one oversized panel, Firman Glass looked at outsourcing the largest single-leaf toughened glass panels whilst ensuring that the low-iron glass brought in would match as closely as possible to Firman’s own stock of low-iron glass for the smaller panels. A sample panel was produced for approval by the client, and following its approval the order was placed with Firman for the manufacture of the four replacement panels. Over the next three weeks, the oversized, single toughened glass panels were procured
and, for the three other panels, the glass was cut, processed, and laminated in Firman’s Romford-based factories. Then, the last process, the sandblast anti-slip treatment was applied to the top surface, these panels needed three passes through the machine with panels taking almost a day for each piece. This project was delivered on time to a high standard of finish and showed Firman Glass’ comprehensive manufacturing capabilities and ability to be flexible when faced with difficult projects.

and holds a collection of processing machinery including four CNC processing stations, waterjet cutting and straight line edging. The construction of these panels was 50.5mm-thick overall comprising three leaves of 12mm low-iron glass and one leaf of 10mm low-iron glass, all laminated together with three 1.52mm-thick clear PVB interlayers. To complicate things further, the top glass surface had a bespoke anti-slip treatment that was needed to match the remaining panels on site as closely as possible.

Specification Spotlight FIRMAN GLASS INSTALLS A NEW GLASS LAMINATING PRODUCTION LINE Firman Glass has recently installed a new glass laminating production line capable of producing glass panels to a maximum size of 6000 x 2800mm. Whilst the company manufactures high-quality safety and structural glass products it also can achieve any bespoke decorative design requested by the architect using specialist printed or coloured interlays. The main benefits of toughened laminated glass are its strength and performance under impact and post-fracture. It is capable of withstanding very large loads and, in the unlikely event of being broken, the resulting
fragments will be retained by the interlayer. Firman Glass stocks all clear and Vancevacoloured interlays. The Vanceva colour interlayer system offers architects and designers unparalleled creative freedom to incorporate colour into glass and glazing systems. Producing a broad spectrum of colours and moods that are unachievable using stock selections of glass,Vanceva is the creative freedom architects and interior designers desire. A palette of 16 colours can be combined in up to four layers to produce more than 3000 custom, transparent, translucent and opaque glass colours.
SUPERIOR STRENGTH, LASTING BEAUTY The SentryGlas interlayer is five times stronger and up to 100 times stiffer than conventional laminating materials. With this kind of strength, the glass can be a more active structural element in the building envelope, opening up design possibilities that didn’t exist before. Besides its strength, SentryGlas ionoplast interlayer retains its clarity – even after years of service. Unlike other interlayers, SentryGlas ionoplast interlayer is much less vulnerable to moisture exposure or yellowing over time. Some of the many SentryGlas interlayer applications include minimally supported and open-edged railings, facades and canopies,
structural glass flooring, stairs, walkways and pedestrian bridges, hurricane-resistant windows, doors and skylights and bomb-blast resistant windows, doors and facades. As well as improved strength and stiffness, in the event of breakage, glass fragments remain firmly bonded to the interlayer, reducing the chance of injury and SentryGlas is extremely durable and resistant to clouding, even after years of exposure. SentryGlas can be used in glass manufactured flat or curved, including annealed, toughened, heat-stregthened, spandrel, wired, patterned and colour-tinted glass and is available with or without UV transmittance.
AMIRAN ANTI-REFLECTIVE GLASS AMIRAN anti-reflective glass is unique due to its unrivalled mechanical and chemical strength and robustness. It’s an established and strong premium brand in the market and is outstanding due to its overall performance combined with superior services. AMIRAN also has the best anti-reflective glass for bent applications. SCHOTT AMIRAN antireflective glass for showcases offers crystal clear transparency, even with a significant difference in the amount of light in front of and behind the pane. It reduces reflections to just a fraction
of those seen with conventional glass. This makes AMIRAN anti-reflective glass the material of choice for showcases. The invisible glass has extremely high transmission meaning no visible reflection (1%, instead of 8% with float glass). There is a reduction of unwanted reflection to provide a perfect view through glass especially in complex lighting conditions, high Colour Rendering Index for crystal clear transparency and the ability to photograph through it.

This small enterprise has now grown into The Parkside Group which includes the market-leading brands of Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, Axim Architectural Hardware and Alu-Timber. Hardwired within the DNA of a business that has survived and thrived for over 50 years is customer service. To put this longevity into perspective, when The Parkside Group was founded, NASA had not yet taken a giant leap for mankind and landed on the moon. Since 1967, The Parkside Group has worked through great recessions, three-day weeks and the Black Monday crash, whilst always maintaining its unique customer service ethos; working with customers to supply innovative solutions that make their businesses profitable. The Parkside Group actively seeks to supply solutions and market-leading delivery that provides the market with cost efficiencies which stand the test

of time. Examples of this are operating a 100% in-stock philosophy and twice weekly delivery service, so fabricators can utilise all the cost savings of a JIT policy and, for its specification clients, creating bespoke aluminium profiles and systems that provide fast-track, robust solutions. In 1987, Axim Architectural Hardware joined the group and the famous TC-8800 Transom Closer stormed the door hardware market, and still today Axim is the number-one branded architectural door closer for reliability and performance. To celebrate the golden anniversary, The Parkside Group has a new brand identity to take it through the next 50 years of ambitious plans. The Parkside Group, now TPG, uses the heritage of the diamond logo, branding aluminium with ‘TPG’ to reassure its partners of the TPG mark of quality. This is backed up with a new website which outlines the group’s TPG: 2025 strategy, highlighting the processes that have, and always will be, critical to the business’ success.

A new sustainable orthopaedic clinic is enhanced with Selectaglaze secondary glazing Bentinck Street lies between Welbeck Street and Manchester Square in the heart of Marylebone and was named after the family surname of the Duke of Portland. Back in the Victorian era, Charles Dickens lived on this very street for a number of years with his father, which is hard to imagine now, with double-decker busses passing constantly down this busy thoroughfare. Number 20, part of the Howard De Walden Estate, has been transformed into a high-spec orthopaedic clinic. This involved the fitting of secondary glazing to the front elevation of the building, to enhance the acoustic performance and thermal retention of the original glazing. The original timeworn windows were draughty and allowed high levels of noise ingress. Selectaglaze installed 30 units. Series 41 sidehung casements were selected, due to the units having a flush glass-to-frame detail which lessens the build-up of dust and dirt on ledges. All the
casements were glazed with sealed units housing integral blinds, which help maintain a clean environment, as well as to ensure patient privacy. The installation was a success and the thermal and noise enhancements can already be felt in the rooms. With the addition of secondary glazing, it is hoped patient stays will be quiet, comfortable, private and clean. Founded in 1966 and a Royal Warrant holder since 2004, Selectaglaze has a wealth of experience working on all building types from listed libraries to new-build hotels with each unit bespoke to the individual needs of the client. 8 www.selectaglaze.co.uk

Forbo’s new range has been developed in response to the trend for more relaxed and calming workspaces
Forbo launches new Tessera Intouch – for more relaxed and informal workspaces Taking inspiration from natural craft textiles and artistic hand weaves, Forbo Flooring Systems has launched a new softly striated carpet tile collection; Tessera In-touch. Designed to help deformalise office interiors, the new range allows designers to create more relaxed and calming working environments.
T
he In-touch collection features 10 planks, with hues that diffuse along their width, rather than their length. Whilst any of the colourways can be used alone, each plank is part of pair, having three of their four individual yarn colours in common. This relationship of colour and
design ensures the paired colours flow easily into each other to achieve tonal or contrasting flows across the floor, creating relaxing interior spaces without the need for complicated space planning. Janet Lowe, Head of Marketing UK and Ireland at Forbo, said:“The current trend for
Tessera In-touch planks can be installed in a variety of different layouts
flexibility in the office environment suggests that if workspaces were more inviting and relaxed, employees would work better, collaborate more and, ultimately, be happier in work.Tessera In-touch embraces this idea of a less-structured, more calming aesthetic to produce a comfortable and tranquil atmosphere. “The collection is available in contemporary shades including on-trend hues from mustard, blush and grey to duck egg blue, all of which can be combined to create different aesthetics. Further designs can be fashioned by playing with the plank format itself – creating patterns such as herringbone or half drop.” Forbo aims to create better quality environments in which people can live, work and learn.Tessera carpet tiles achieve this through low levels of VOC emissions, excellent sound absorbency and a wide range of stimulating designs and sympathetic use of colour. In-touch is manufactured sustainably, containing 60% recycled content by weight and using 100% renewable electricity. 8 www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/tesseraintouch * info.flooring.uk@forbo.com ( 0844

HVAC/HVP
Nortek has a wide range of products that already exceed the minimum conditions as laid out by Directive 2009/125/EC Lot 20
ErP – what it means for radiant heaters With the ErP Directive coming into force on 1st January 2018, Daniel Wild, Senior Development Engineer at Nortek Global HVAC, explains what it means for radiant heaters going forward.
A
ll radiant tube heaters and tube heater systems will be required to have a minimum seasonal efficiency (calculated from radiant efficiency, thermal efficiency and electrical power consumption) of 74% and NOx emissions no more than 200mg/kWh input based on gross calorific value. Crucially, these minimum criteria are applicable for both new installations and when replacing existing products. As a result, customers can be assured that the heating equipment they are purchasing is highly energy-efficient and emissions of harmful environmental pollutants are constrained. The Ecodesign regulation (EU) 2015/1188 along with the implementing Directive 2009/125/EC is an EU policy aimed at improving the energy efficiency and other environmental performance criteria for Energy-Related Products (ErP), such as gasfired overhead radiant tube heaters. For this regulation, products have been divided into product groups or ‘Lots’ with gas-fired overhead radiant tube heaters, tube heater systems and gas-fired luminous plaque heaters all contained within Lot 20. Lot 20 provides the minimum energy efficiency and environmental values for each
58
heating technology. Any product that does not comply with the requirements cannot be marketed and sold within the EU – including the UK. Following the referendum in the UK to leave the EU, all requirements of Ecodesign will still have to be complied with as it could take up to two years to negotiate an exit. Even then, unless new legislation is introduced, ErP will continue to be one of many methods employed to reduce the environmental impact of heating technology. Unlike other products, gas-fired radiant heaters and some other commercial heating appliances are excluded from mandatory energy labelling under Regulation 2015/1186 as they are directly planned and purchased by HVAC professionals. However, product literature and free-access websites of manufacturers must indicate the seasonal efficiency and NOx emissions for each product or system. Underfloor air conditioning fits the bill at 8 Waterloo Place No. 8 Waterloo Place, a fabulous Edwardian building with a Grade II-Listed Portland stone facade, has recently undergone a full refurbishment including structural reconfiguration to the central core and installation of new HVAC services creating 33,000ft2 of prime speculative office space just off Piccadilly in the St James’ area of London. AET Flexible Space is delighted to have supplied a CAM-C direct expansion underfloor air conditioning system for this prestigious refurbishment; comprising eight CAM-C 35 downflow units, Daikin heat pumps and approximately 108 TU4-EC Fantiles. The underfloor system was specified by consultant Watkins Payne Partnership for four floors within the seven-floor building. Both the client, Cornerstone Real Estate, and Architect, Morrow and Lorraine, had requested a clean finish with no services at high-level to allow the decorative feature plasterwork in the ceiling to be left exposed. The AET Flexible Space CAM-C direct expansion system fits this brief perfectly.
The CAM-C downflow unit supplies conditioned air into the plenum beneath the raised access floor, which serves as the ventilation zone. This zone is divided into supply and return air paths using an airtight relocatable baffle and then the CAM receives spent air back at floor-level for reconditioning, allowing the total elimination of services located in the ceiling. Conditioned air is fed into the space using modular, plug and play TU4 Fantile units with the upgraded EC fan option for additional energy efficiency. Completed in April 2017, the refurbishment was successful in creating fully refurbished, additional net area Grade A office space, an enlarged reception and alterations to the top
storey to create a roof terrace. The building was also shortlisted for the 2017 BREEAM awards’ Refurbishment category – and Chinese restaurant giant, Imperial Treasure, has secured 8500ft2 of mezzanine, ground and basement floors on a 25-year lease deal. 8 www.flexiblespace.com

RECYFIX MONOTEC drains outdoor surfaces at Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las school The Ysgol Gynradd Lôn Las Primary School, Swansea, has currently 535 pupils from year one to six as well as reception and nursery classes. The school site is split into four main areas. Having a large gymnasium and a separate school canteen, there are plenty of outdoor playing areas including a hard surface yard, an enclosed area for the nursery and expansive areas of grassland. Hauraton introduced the RECYFIX MONOTEC surface drainage system in January 2016. The Lôn Las school joins numerous installations successfully completed in the UK. The MONOTEC 1m-long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very
resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the ultra violet spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Cat Jones, Hauraton’s Project Manager for the South West, comments: “The RECYFIX MONOTEC channel HEELSAFE slot grating was originally designed to enhance the flow of water into the channel. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. I was particularly pleased the site
contractor, Dawnus Construction, found these channels easy to handle on site.” Shaun Davies, the Site Agent for the contractor, also observed: “I was very impressed with the durability of the MONOTEC channels. Not a single unit was damaged by site traffic or whilst laying the asphalt.” 8 www.hauraton.co.uk

Roofing, Cladding & Insulation Roofing system sucks A unique flat roofing system is giving contractors peace of mind that however windy, the roof will stay put. Protan’s innovative vacuum system is the only single-ply roofing method to harness natural air movement to provide adhesion. The fully warranty covered system optimises air movement across the roof to create suction and hold the membrane in place. Protan’s vacuum system works by loose-laying Protan membrane over an airtight, load-bearing vapour control layer, on top of a metal or concrete sealed deck, inserting the vacuum vents across the main roof area, and mechanically fixing at perimeter and penetrations. * sales@protan.co.uk

Selecting Victorian tile leads to Swift sale
When Alan Swift saw the Rosemary Clay Craftsman Victorian tile from Redland, his first thought was:“I’ve got a job for that tile”. That job was a detached house in Wigmore, near Gillingham, that Swift Roofing, Alan’s company, was building together with its sister company, Heritage Designer Homes (HDH).The Victorian is the third tile in the Rosemary Clay Craftsman range offered by Redland and has a darker and grittier texture than either of the other two tiles. All three tiles in the range – Victorian, Hawkhurst and Albury – have a weathered look and give traditional roofs a greater depth of texture and character. 8 www.redland.co.uk/craftsman * sales.redland@monier.com ( 01293 666700

When the 80-year-old roof of Richard Hale School in Hertford needed replacing it was imperative that new clay tiles matched the existing in appearance, not only because the school is in a conservation area; but it is also situated opposite the local authority’s planning department. The obvious choice was Rosemary Clay Craftsman tiles in Victorian from Redland. The massive job of replacing the 165,000 tiles went to the Breyer Group. “Redland supported us all the way along, ensuring that we had a steady supply of materials and advising on accessories such as vents,” commented Tom Titler, who managed the contract. * sales.redland@monier.com

Choose a paint that lasts with TeknosPro’s Futura Aqua 40 Hanover building unveiled by Remmers The Grade II Listed building located in Manchester City Centre is being refurbished to provide Grade A office space, retail and leisure facilities. Constructed in 1905, the interior walls had accumulated a thick buildup of dust, dirt, polish and even nicotine residue, all of which needed to be removed. Following trials of various products, Remmers’ Arte Mundit Eco was selected as it is a self-vulcanising cleaning paste designed for thorough, water-free removal of residues and soiling on a wide range of substrates. The Arte Mundit Eco was applied using a 4" brush and left to ‘set’ overnight. The set rubber-like material was then removed by hand the following day revealing the original white marble finish. 8 www.remmers.co.uk * sales@remmers.co.uk ( 01293 594010

Powdertech Corby: a bespoke maritime colour palette Architects and planners are recognising that developments alongside the River Thames in London should celebrate the river and create a sense of riverbank community. Imaginative and ambitious projects are emerging, of which Enderby Wharf in Greenwich is one. The buildings are designed to reflect the site’s maritime past and have a ripple effect that mirrors the Thames. The use of colour on these buildings is carefully planned. Powdertech Corby was commissioned to coat over 4500 linear metres of galvanised steel balcony supports and glass balustrade support for the residential apartments. Five different powder colours were used, all made to order by AkzoNobel, conforming to NCS notations (Natural Colour System). As the project commenced, designers identified the unique colour palette for this maritime development. With careful choice of colour, new developments can be designed to strongly identify with their location. Powdertech used AkzoNobel powders in precise NCS shades of blue/green, orange and yellow, matching the colours chosen for the exterior of different parts of the building.
“Powdertech is passionately interested in the development of powder coatings to reproduce tones and textures and in the effect of colour within architectural design,” said Powdertech Director, Richard Besant. “The Natural Colour System is a powerful tool in determining the precise
colours to use and our manufacturers can produce custom colours to exact NCS measurements.” 8 www.powdertechcorby.co.uk * pcl@powdertech.co.uk ( 01536

Giacomini receives RIBA CPD approval
Four-step solution for penetrating damp
Giacomini is now offering a RIBA-approved CPD course to architects and construction professionals. The underfloor heating course explores the theory behind radiant heating, the benefits of underfloor heating and the make up and design of a system. The course also explains heat transfer, design factors and component applications and gives participants an understanding of how and why underfloor heating systems work. RIBA members can now take the course to contribution towards their CPD qualifications. The RIBA course will complement Giacomini’s existing CIBSEapproved CPD offering on underfloor heating and heat interface units.
A new CPD seminar created by Safeguard Europe sets out four steps to help architects, builders and other specifiers to deal with both the causes of penetrating damp. There are many reasons why rainwater can penetrate masonry walls and there are an equal number of issues that can make the problem worse. The four steps, explained in detail during the seminar ‘Dealing with Penetrating Damp’, are: assessing rainwater routes and exacerbating factors; blocking the primary paths for water penetration; controlling the exacerbating factors; and installing back-up in the form of a dampresistant internal system.

Increased demand for renewable building product Demand for Plaswood is on the increase as specifiers, architects, landscape designers, construction companies and many more realise the benefits of the sustainable, eco-friendly substitute for non-renewable materials such as wood, concrete and steel. Plaswood is strong, durable, waterproof, maintenance free, versatile and 100% recyclable – it sounds almost too good to be true. Made in the UK from 100%
recycled plastic, the product supports the circular economy and is not a wood composite like many other plastic wood products on the market.
The company boasts an annual recycling capacity in excess of 100,000 tonnes of waste, mainly from the agricultural sector’s waste farm bale plastic. Plaswood is a leading brand producing Plaswood lumber, construction materials and street furniture – providing structural and practical solutions and products for wetlands, waterways, parks, gardens, towns, city centres, leisure centres, schools and playgrounds. In fact, anywhere where environments are exposed to water and/or the elements. Mike Baxter, External Affairs Director at RPC BPI Recycled Building Products, explains: “Demand for Plaswood has hit an all-time high, especially in the outdoor construction and marine sectors where we serve a broad range of businesses with the successful construction of boardwalks and coastal paths. Plaswood’s long life qualities are the key ingredient for the success of many constructions because it doesn’t wear, rust or degrade with age but adds real value over the life of the product. It has a clear edge over wooden structures particularly in relation to marine applications simply because it will not rot and requires no annual maintenance.” 8 www.plaswoodgroup.com

G-SMATT targets architects and developers with its ‘architainment’ solution Following recent success in the Far East for both its architectural and events media display solutions, G-SMATT has announced the formation of a European company. G-SMATT Europe is led by Dr Orhan Ertughrul and will be bringing the benefits of its unique, smart glass solution to the architectural and city planning audiences as well as the events industry.
Dr Ertughrul, Executive Vice President Europe at G-SMATT Europe, explained: “We firmly believe that the digital media facade, coupled to the Internet of Things and the
current ubiquity of glass facade architecture, is fundamentally changing the way we interact with the cityscape. The buildings of the future will be connected and able to share information. This connectivity will also allow building owners to project the purpose of their buildings into the community, change the way their buildings are perceived, create new business models and interact with people on a personal level.” G-SMATT Glass has already been successfully installed at several locations in Asia including the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the company’s newly-refurbished offices contain two walls of the media active glass. When viewed from the inside, there is less than 1% reduction in visibility through the glass. This is considerably less than other current alternatives such as an overlay or frame structure. Even when illuminated at night, people within the building are not dazzled by reflection as less than 10% of the light emitted by the LEDs is reflected into the building’s interior. 8 www.g-smatteurope.com/products/

The pre-installation support of the team at The Deck Tile Co. and the preparatory work involved was an essential part of this project
All hands on deck Levato Mono Porcelain Paver system from The Deck Tile Co. was recently installed at the new ‘superpub’ from JD Wetherspoon, Ramsgate.
T
he vast 750m2 wrap-around terrace has been covered with the Timeless range of timber-effect porcelain ‘planks’, a most complementary finish blending in with the coastal location and its wonderful sea view. The pre-installation support of the team at The Deck Tile Co. and the preparatory work involved was an essential part of this project and has resulted in an excellent finished result. With hurdles to overcome, such as multiple falls, facilitating the erection of signage struts and large static planters, the paver system has, due to its flexibility, meant that the terrace expanse was completed in under three weeks. The use of the unique slope-correcting/height-adjustable pedestals and retention system has enabled the creation of a stable, raised access ‘deck’ and, when combined with the 20mm porcelain pavers, offers the user fine-quality external flooring, with low-level ongoing maintenance costs and high slip resistance – to name just two of the key benefits of the Levato Mono Porcelain Paver system. With all the benefits 20mm porcelain and the supports system has to offer, Levato Mono is the ideal product for exterior projects, both residential and commercial alike. 20mm porcelain pavers; 40x80 45x90 60x60 75x75 30x120 40x120 60x120
