s with any specification process, research to remain abreast of industry trends is essential for creating the best possible interior experience for the end-user. The coming months are packed with shows and events to topup your industry knowledge and inspire your upcoming projects and designs. I recently spoke to Decorex’s Brand Manager, Simone du Bois, about why trade shows are so important for the design community: “Predominantly because we are a community and trade shows provide the opportunity to not only discover new and exciting companies and products but also to connect with existing companies and importantly with their peers. It is about inspiration and ideas for not only the visitors but also for the exhibitors.” Next month’s May Design Series at London’s ExCeL promises to once again offer something for every interior space. Now consisting of five design districts, the second edition of this industry-leading event will serve both the contract and retail markets. For your guide of what to expect read Inex’s event preview on page 16. Grand Designs London Live – also at ExCeL next month – is a show with a slightly different emphasis. Leading the way for self-build and restoration inspiration, this nine-day show has a plethora of innovative products from a wide range of exhibitors. One step ahead This sweeping staircase

contributes towards a wonderfully dramatic entrance

Stay one step ahead Stay abreast of the latest trends with Inex’s design forecasts. Richard McLane, Design Director of bespoke staircase company Bisca, explains why ‘wow factor’ staircases are on the rise.

I Cantileverd dark walnut treads are complemented by a simple white painted plastered balustrade

n years gone by, unless you lived in a palace, a staircase was a simple thing. Today, it can be a central design feature transforming an interior with one dramatic statement. Curved, cantilevered, spiral or suspended, in steel, glass, timber, copper or aluminium – infinite possibilities have been opened up by clever design and engineering turning the staircase into a key focal point of the house. Staircases are fast becoming a priority for architects and developers, seeing the potential to add that ‘wow factor’ to a house. Homeowners have historically spent a fortune on kitchens and

bathrooms, rooms that are often out of view and have a lifespan of around 10 years. Staircases are another matter altogether and as a design feature have been neglected in the last 50 years. Today’s interiors are often open plan, lightfilled spaces where the staircase can make or break the overall design. A lightweight, transparent structure in glass, for example, suits this type of interior as it continues the open feel and doesn’t take away natural light. In addition, a striking, well-designed staircase adds value and can set the tone for a whole house, helping to woo potential customers with that all important first impression. INEX-ONLINE.COM

10 INSPIRE This staircase is supported by a hidden structure cleverly detailed into the wall

Low iron glass

Changing a staircase is not something one should embark on lightly. However, if it blocks out light, is not well integrated, or in poor condition, it might be time to look at an alternative. A natural time to think about a new staircase is when other renovation work is planned. As aesthetic and structural implications need careful consideration, each staircase has to be planned individually. Commissioning a bespoke staircase enables you to create an original design to your brief and for complicated projects it is always advisable to consult a specialist. A specialist staircase design and manufacturing company will be involved throughout the whole process, offering expert knowledge and the benefit of their considerable experience. The process should start with a visit from a designer where both client INEX-ONLINE.COM

balustrade panels are complemented with leather clad handrails in this contemporary straircase

and designer contribute ideas and then a small-scale model should be submitted for the client’s approval. Every interior should be treated as a unique space – a sleek, stainless steel staircase works well in loft spaces and buildings with a high-tech, contemporary style whereas a very grand home with an impressive entrance hall requires something more majestic. The configuration of the staircase will depend on the space available; the stairs should interact with the building they are in. The design should be beautiful as well as practical. Safety is of paramount importance for staircases and all new staircases and balustrades must conform to building regulations. A well-integrated product also has to take trends into consideration. The trend for light and spacious, openplan interiors has in turn created a trend in use of glass for staircases. With the light, ethereal aesthetic of glass, designers are able to create staircases which appear to float, to a stunning effect. The translucent nature of glass maximises the use of light and space and creates an ‘airy’ feel. A frosted, opaque effect, achieved through sandblasting, can be a good way to increase safety as it gives more friction underfoot. Stainless steel is another very popular material for staircases, remarkably useful both for its strengths and its looks. Although it is often associated with very bare, minimalist architecture, it can take on a range of different looks. It is great combined with glass and also sits well with all sorts of timber and even with leather. www.bisca.co.uk «

Blurring boundaries Over recent years a revolution has taken place in the design and comfort of outdoor relaxation areas. The dividing lines between exterior furniture and interior furniture have become virtually invisible and interior design now extends increasingly towards garden design and vice versa.

F

rom the designer’s point of view, this might sound somewhat daunting, as architects and interior designers may be less familiar with the outdoor leisure furniture market and, similarly, garden designers may well be more interested in the horticultural and hard landscaping aspects of the project, rather than sourcing furniture. One company which has seen firsthand the move towards outdoor living since it opened its showroom 25 years ago is Stanstedibased Leisure Plan. Chris McCormack, founder and owner of the business, said: “When I started Leisure Plan the market was concentrated on patio sets to private individuals, but during the last 10 years or so we have received more and more enquiries from interior designers who are looking for furniture which gives outdoor entertaining areas the same level of comfort and style that they are creating indoors. This demand has seen the development of leisure furniture from utilitarian plastic chairs and tables to stylish pieces of designer furniture which would grace any living room. Trends come and go, but the industry has seen a huge leap forward in the development of fabrics for outdoor use, many of which now offer the look and feel of interior furnishing fabrics. By combining beautiful fabrics with well-designed furniture, designers can ensure that the colour and design flair of the interior is not compromised in outdoor relaxation areas. Cushions add that finishing touch to any collection and the use of fabric and colour links interior and exterior spaces, with many outdoor specialists providing a bespoke service to match the size, colour, material and design needed. glass to combine the outdoors with the indoors are therefore being reflected in the development of furniture which allows the quality and comfort of the interior to flow seamlessly into the exterior areas. The dramatic increase in air travel over recent years has allowed more and more access to luxury holiday destinations worldwide, where people get a feel for dining and entertaining outdoors with all the comfort of a dining room or living room. Designers are being asked to re-create this kind of atmosphere and level of comfort and consequently are looking for good quality, well designed furniture which will withstand contract use.

The Original Bedstead Company, Stanze Interiors and Swaffer Fabrics, as well as a host of international brands including German furniture giants Gwinner and Koinor, and Italian companies Calia Italia and Casamania. Tim Robinson, UK agent to Koinor says: “After a nine-year break from showing in the UK, we felt that this year’s May Design Series was the right time and location for Koinor to exhibit again. London offers a venue that will attract influential buyers from the retail and contract sectors, and May is the ideal time for procurement.” Product highlights include Deirdre Dyson’s 2014 carpet collection, which is entitled ‘Designs from the Seashore’ and inspired by the beaches of the Las Perlas islands. The designs incorporate Chinese silk and pure wool, giving the carpets an iridescent appearance resembling water passing over the beach. Another favourite promises to be Casamania’s Toshi range of storing units. Meaning city in Japanese, Toshi is a system of mobile containers which calls to mind the mosaic decorations to be found in certain buildings in Tokyo. The fresh and essential lines optimise and emphasise the

geometric design engraved on the doors of the pieces. In addition, the Toshi system is completed by three optional smaller containers, either with doors or drawers, which can be positioned on the modules themselves. In addition to a top exhibitor line-up, May Design Series has some exciting feature areas in the pipeline. Design guru Ab Rogers will be curating the exhibition space in his own inimitable style, and the Conversation Series is back by popular demand, with a host of experts poised to offer pearls of wisdom to visitors. Visitors to the Lighting district will also be treated to the Designers With Light Forum, a programme of talks put together specifically for lighting specialists. Materia will be showcasing the materials set to shape the future of the built environment at The Materia Xperience, and charity-ofthe-moment Out of the Dark will be embarking on one of their now famous collaborative ventures. Radical redesigns Inex unveils the greatest iconic interior elements still prevalent in today’s design world – all thanks to a little contemporary twist. INEX-ONLINE.COM

A

ustrian artist Klemens Torggler has designed a unique collection of doors based on rotating squares, with the most recent addition comprising four collapsing triangular sections that roll and realign themselves into a seemingly traditional-shaped rectangle. The special construction of

Klemens’ doors makes it possible to move the door sideways without the use of tracks. This technical trick opens up new applications for the door. During the development of the flip panel doors several solutions were found for connecting the squares efficiently. One of these is a connection that employs a system of rods. Another alternative way to connect the squares is with a wheel and a curved track – a wheel is guided along the track when the door is moved. The system can also be connected with a wheel and a curved track, where the wheel is guided along the track when

the door is moved. The collection has evolved and concluded in, arguably, his most innovative design yet: the Evolution Door. The Vienna-based artist calls it the drehplattentür system, which translates ‘flip panel door’. Compared to all systems before, this one makes it possible to place the squares one upon the other in the final positions of the door.

The Evolution Door is set to motion by a soft pulling at the connecting panel joint, allowing the door to collapse into four triangles, slide across to the entrance and straighten once more into a rectangle. The system has soft curved edges to prevent injuries and adds to the door’s organic-looking motion. The Klemens Torggler Doors also come in screen systems, with the use of a moving object that revolves around its own vertical axis. The screen can separate entire rooms by turning and opening with one movement of the hand.

The new Evolution Door system is currently only a prototype, but the other Klemens Torggler Doors are available in glass, steel, and wood. www.torggler.co.at «

ocus SB electrical accessories are often the choice of interior designers and architects when something a little different or special is required. Bespoke plates and finishes can be specified in the knowledge that Focus SB has the manufacturing facilities and experience to deliver a first class product along with professional customer service. A good example of this is Angel House in Hove, which has been lovingly restored whilst maintaining its Regency period features and grand interiors. Owner Phil Haiseldon is undertaking a labour of love to bring the property back to its former glory and transform it into an exclusive wedding venue, filming location and stunning conference facility. Focus SB Ambassador flat plates were chosen to complement the period details and were supplied in un-lacquered polished brass. Phil wanted the electrical accessories to reflect the interiors and the un-lacquered brass finish will age gracefully, with each plate gaining INEX-ONLINE.COM

its own patina over time. The Focus SB Bespoke service was also used to manufacture unique plates to match the standard Ambassador range. These included circular sockets, push button dimmers, AV points and bespoke oversized light switch plates containing toggle both switches and dimmers. Phil said: “We wanted sockets and switches to complement the Regency decor. We didn’t want the plates to shout out. We were looking for a simple plate with an ageless quality. So we chose the Ambassador polished brass, supplied un-lacquered, so they will dull and look old quite quickly.” The ceilings are high, and walls have an authentic pastel colour scheme that co-ordinates well with the brass, which features not only on the Ambassador electrical accessories, but also on the door fittings and other architectural features. The brass plates are in all the rooms and hallways, and are often placed beside beautiful large cast iron radiators. It is only in the bridal suite,

a light room, which has a very unusual wall mounted patterned plaster canopy over the bed-head, where Focus SB’s clear Prism plates have been used. Phil added: “I didn’t want the rococo style wallpaper being interrupted by the electrical sockets so I went for Focus SB’s Prism range. The staff at Focus SB have been so helpful, so patient, and sympathetic towards my requests, helping me realise my vision for this interior.” Angel House sits opposite the Angel Peace Statue in Hove and is part of a series of terraced houses called Brunswick Terrace, which were designed by architect Charles Busby in 1823 in the Regency New Town. At this time Brighton and Hove was well on the way to becoming a fashionable seaside resort. www.focus-sb.co.uk « 01424 858060 «

The perfect penthouse Interior architect Thomas Griem has transformed St. Pancras penthouse into a haven of heritage-infused contemporary luxury.

T

he life of interior designer Thomas Griem is almost as jet-set as some of his clients. Thomas, a German-born, Germantrained, London-based architect/ interior designer has recently been in Hong Kong to oversee a project. Before that he was visiting Russia, Ibiza and other European cities. Thomas considers working in different time zones on different projects as all part of a normal day’s work: “I really like it and never get tired of it. I remain really interested in residential, in how people live and how to do really clever things with property.” Thomas came to London after studying architecture at Berlin’s Hochschule der Kunste, which he followed with a diploma in architecture from the University of Westminster. Before deciding to form his own practice in 2011 (TG Studio) he was a partner in Target Living, a company he founded with interior designer Tara Bernerd whom he met when they were both working as designers for property development company Yoo. Thomas and Tara spent the next decade creating strong and contemporary schemes for a variety of commercial and residential clients. “We had a good time,” Griem explains. “We grew the company to 20 people but the time came when we both felt we wanted do something on our own so we decided, amicably, to split.” Thomas has recently completed

the refurbishment of a penthouse over London’s iconic St. Pancras hotel. The apartment is one of three penthouses in the 67 unit development by the Manhattan loft Corporation. It covers the top three floors of the west tower of this famous London landmark. The brief was to transform the unit from the standard developer spec into a personal and luxurious home. As the property is of highest public interest and the interiors listed by English Heritage as very significant, the floor plan had to be broadly maintained but all staircases, balustrading and partitioning, where possible, were replaced. The Studio and client worked closely together removing all bathrooms, floor finishes, builtin wardrobes and the kitchen. The master bedroom, which is located on the top floor, is now reached through a new staircase that turns around an oak clad storage room reached off the main entrance hall. Griem enlarged the floor area on this level and separated the space into a walkin wardrobe finished in oak and sheep leather and personalised to homeowner Arran Patal’s needs. The master bedroom space is open plan but can be closed to the triple height living room by an electrically operated curtain. Arran let Griem select and furnish the entire penthouse and a Meridiani bed in blue velvet was chosen for the Master bedroom flanked by vividly coloured, INEX-ONLINE.COM

The middle and lower floor (floor 4 & 5 of the building) are occupied by two levels of entertaining. A new staircase has been designed connecting both levels, featuring oak veneer, plain glass and wooden stringers painted in off-white. The staircase consists of a bridge that connects to a library which is cantilevering the main part of the staircase. This library unit is the feature of the staircase and also forms the balustrade to one side. It offers storage for books, statues and other artefacts Arran collects. The upper floor measures approximately 75m2 and accommodates a very comfortable seating area and a zone for the pool table, a collector’s item owned by the client. For me there are three key factors – time, cost, quality. I like to control all three, then I can get the best value for someone.” “I’m a designer,” says Griem. “I don’t want to create something that is just beautiful. For me it should also work really well. Design has to add value. It should be simple and logical, it has to survive and give longevity – only then is it intelligent and clever. With an inexperienced client then maybe you have to explain it, but the clients also learn something. So I sit people down and explain how I see this working. The essential finishing touches Anne Fulford, Managing Director at interior design company Kingdom Interiors, advises how to approach a domestic interior’s crucial finishing touches.

Left: Varese by Sanderson Above: Betula by Voyage Decoration

T

he little things make a big difference, but too often people neglect the smaller details and finishes when designing a room. Whether its accessories like cushions or rugs, or a statement piece of art hanging on a prominent wall, these add to the character of your home and reflect your personality. You would never decorate your room with a stunning paint colour or wallpaper and neglect to add furniture, so it’s surprising how many people forget to add the finishing touches. The power of the small details is often overlooked, when in fact these are often the most memorable aspects of a room, the items that project

individual flair and style. When considering your finishing touches, your primary focus should be to inject a sense of yourself into your home. Art is a great way to stamp your personality on a room, as whatever piece you choose it is guaranteed to reflect your personal taste and therefore act as an immediate conversation starter with guests. A great piece of artwork is also able to mimic a feature wall effect, INEX-ONLINE.COM

28 ACCESSORIES Cushions are a great way to pour colour and pattern into a domestic space

without using paint or wallpaper, to bring the room alive. It can also serve as the focal point for any other accessories you may add, so colours, textures and patterns can be tied to the piece of art. The thing with accessories is that they are easy to update. Cushions in particular are generally a small investment, allowing you to easily change them dependent on seasons or trends. Creating an instant effect in your home decor scheme, cushions are also a great way to experiment with colour and INEX-ONLINE.COM

texture, whether it be dazzling jewel toned cushions, luxurious velvet fabric or an eye-catching pattern, all things you wouldn’t necessarily consider on a larger scale. Cushions are great throughout your home, rather than being restricted to the confines of your living room. Boutique hotels regularly use throw cushions on beds, providing an added touch of luxury to help the room feel more inviting. It’s also worth adding cushions to your outdoor seating areas for added comfort, though be sure to use fabrics that are specifically designed for outdoor use. Being clever with lighting can also tie together the components of your room. Well-placed table lamps or wall lighting can highlight particular features of your

room, whilst helping to improve ambience by softening ceiling light fixtures which can sometimes be too harsh. Similarly, adding a pair of table lamps can create symmetry in a room, helping to project the feeling of a well thought out room. The most important thing to remember when choosing your finishing touches is to make sure they reflect you, as this will ensure that you fall in love with your home time and time again. kingdominteriors.co.uk «

“Hanging pictures correctly on the wall is a crucial part of interior design,” continues Rebecca. “Picture frame wallpaper offers the customer a readymade solution to the difficult art of arranging pictures, with a

The Dresser wallpaper from the new Emma Bridgewater by Sanderson is a stunning example of tromp l’oeil and provides a wonderful opportunity for any Emma Bridgewater fan or ceramic collector to bring such an abundance of pattern and pottery into their home. Created by the Emma Bridgewater team every ceramic shape, pattern and image references back to the Emma Bridgewater portfolio and handcrafted ethos.” As bold patterned wallpapers continue to flood the interior design market, they take on the role of statement artwork within their own right. The advent of digital printing has allowed imagery that is more realistic and detailed than ever before. Wallpaper specialists Sandberg has just released its first digital collection called ‘Arkiv’. Using the latest technology, the company has created what it terms ‘true Swedish wallpaper art’. Sissa Sundling explains the origins of the collection: “We often find new ideas by looking back at history, taking inspiration from older graphic works and drawings, as well as the treasure trove of archive books, pictures and sketches in our own Studio. We have long wanted to share these wonderful patterns, but until now the technology has not been available to reproduce these larger designs to their full potential.” Fellow Design Director, Karolina Kroon adds: “Embracing digital technology is a new challenge for us, but one which opens up so many exciting avenues.” Sanderson’s Rebecca Craig concludes: “Statement wallpapers are here to stay and are ever evolving in new and exciting designing and decorating opportunities to revolutionize the way we use pattern in domestic interiors.” www.sanderson-uk.com « www.sandbergab.se/en « INEX-ONLINE.COM

There and back again Interior design trends are constantly changing; seasonal colours, popular patterns and interesting shapes. Janet Houston, Head of Sales and Marketing at Whitehead Designs, talks you through the shift in furniture trends from classic to modern, and back again.

T

he style of furniture has almost come full circle, with the popularity of more traditional pieces surging again after the dominance of modern design in recent years. Ultimately, the style of the space you’re working with and the feel of the entire house will influence your design choices, as well as personal taste, but seeing the variety of classic and contemporary styling across the design world suggests that this is not a one-sided debate. Classic and traditional styles, including the iconic Chesterfield which is one of our most popular pieces, will always have a place in

the home thanks to their obvious elegance and timeless design. Built with comfort and longevity in mind, these grand designs are often adorned in luxuriously rich fabrics to make them even more striking, with leather being a popular choice owing to its quality and durability. Commonly found in more period homes and character properties nowadays, the history that surrounds these regal designs is something that cannot be ignored. The attention to detail on these traditional styles is second to none, exquisite finishes and final touches complete the overall look of the piece, helping to create truly eye-

catching upholstery. Despite the endurance of classic furniture throughout time, more modern styles like our Jive sofa have come to the forefront in recent years. Cleaner lines, bolder colours and a focus on functionality and aesthetics over comfort have led to some very creative and intriguing pieces – a far cry from the traditional styles of previous eras. In keeping with modern styling throughout the world of interiors, modern designs seem more simplistic yet they still pack a punch as the focal point of a room. The modern design world tends to deviate from the classic sofa shape, with curved designs and fluid edges apparent throughout to add an extra level of interest to the room. The post-modernism arts movement also heavily influenced the world of interiors, and is centred on the deviation from the norm. Introducing the use of bright and bold colours, teamed with designs to challenge the perceived ideal of perfection, the postmodernism era led to a more creative way of approaching design and has led to the revolutionary products available today. Modern styling is the most evolutionary of the trends, always reflecting the latest advancements in technology and fashion. Contemporary, by its very definition, means belonging in the present, and as a result is a concept that is continually changing. Whilst classic and traditional

INEX-ONLINE.COM

styles will never experience drastic change, modern furniture brings with it the ability to adapt, which is perhaps why this styling choice is so popular with younger generations who are used to a faster, more transient way of living. Whilst there are extremes, a happy medium of classic and contemporary exists which combines elements of the two to create a piece to capture both old and new. This can be placing traditional styles in contemporary settings, merging traditional patterns with modern shapes, or combining the fluidity and simplicity of a modern design with luxurious fabrics to represent both sides of the design industry. Functionality is also important when considering the shift in furniture trends. More and more people are living in apartment style buildings, which call for furniture to

be lightweight and multi-purpose to reflect the style of living. We are in the era of the sofa bed, which is one of the most standout products for serving a dual purpose and something which we introduced into our range to meet the growing demand. Given the range of designs available, the sofa bed is able to bridge the gap between contemporary and traditional styles. It would be wrong to assume that the shift between classic and modern styles won’t continue; there will always be advocates for both sides of the debate. Ultimately it comes down to personal taste, which is why we offer a range of styles as well as a bespoke service to help you find your ideal piece of furniture. www.whiteheaddesigns.com

What’s more, if you agree to notifications, we will alert you when a new edition is uploaded – you’ll never miss another issue again! Sam Ball, Managing Director of Mixed Media Information comments: “Mixed Media Information has always been a leading purveyor of multichannel publishing and this is consistent among all of our titles. We believe it is important to publish information and content in a variety of channels for the design industry as the publishing landscape has changed dramatically and readers have a multitude of ways of reading, searching and specifying and we believe it is important to offer all of those channels.” He continues: “We conducted a lot of research to our readers and believe we offer the best app as it’s not just presenting a page flip magazine, it goes much deeper than that to the needs of the reader and the marketplace.” According to our reader surveys, case studies are by far the greatest source of inspiration for decision makers and with that in mind we have filtered the content in a dedicated ‘Features’ zone. 43 LIGHTING

Taking the lead with LEDs Ian Hamilton, Managing Director of Hamilton Litestat – the decorative electrical wiring accessories specialist and lighting control and multi-room audio systems manufacturer – talks about how the use of LEDs allows interior designers to create mood lighting and special effects in ever new and creative ways.

L

EDs have been widely available for some time now but only recently has the technology reached a level that delivers a reliable, practical and truly flexible lighting option for commercial and domestic design projects. When it comes to filling space with light to set scenes, create moods and highlight feature areas and key pieces – thanks to LEDs the possibilities are endless. In

fact lighting manufactures can now confidently say to designers and specifiers if you can imagine a lighting scenario then it’s possible to create it! The reign of the standard incandescent lamp, which has dominated lighting delivery for more than 100 years is well and truly over. LED lighting is the future and when you look at the benefits, you can understand why. Not only do today’s LEDs deliver accurate light colour, instant turn on and a useable lifespan 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs, they also eliminate abrupt failure and can be easily dimmed (unlike fluorescent light sources). Plus the fact that they are very small provides many new design possibilities and being a

solid state component means they are shock resistant and virtually unbreakable. Research and get creative It has to be said that manufacturers are in danger of being accused of constantly bombarding interior designers with new and revolutionary LED lighting products. So much so that we have seen many cases of designers sticking to what they know and INEX-ONLINE.COM

avoiding taking risks by not trying out new products. But by simply cherry picking the best of what is available, you are in a position to create amazing lighting effects. It’s just a case of taking the time to research what’s out there. Making light work New LED technology brings with it a massive choice in the form of different types of fittings and controls. From Hamilton’s point of view we can see the challenge for interior designers is how best to harness LEDs to create desired effects. Practical issues around ease of use and budgetary constraints are major considerations too. The simple ability to dim LED lamps efficiently and easily has been one of the biggest recent break-throughs in the LED revolution. Stunning lighting effects can be created using strategically placed fittings and traditional switches. For example even a basic dimmer gives the user the ability to use light to create different moods within one environment. Even everyday dimming installations are benefiting from advances in technology with the introduction of a new range of ‘intelligent dimmers’ designed specifically for LED lamps. In the past problems were often experienced with the simplest of dimming projects due to compatibility issues between the operational performance of the LED lamps used and a conventional dimmer. ‘Intelligent’ dimmers ‘Think’ before they ‘Act’. Using microprocessor technology they monitor the type of lamp used and control required, either leading or trailing edge, and programme themselves for optimum performance making them compatible with a wide variety of lamp types, eliminating any compatibility issues between the lamp and the dimmer which could affect their performance. A lighter look at control Again the whole area of lighting INEX-ONLINE.COM

control and automation offers endless options and possibilities. Lighting control installations allow users to transform a space with light to create different lighting scenarios via pre-programmed or flexible settings. But it’s not just about lighting control. Lighting control is often integrated with audio control and home automation. We are seeing a growth in demand for home automation products and systems and manufacturers are empowering interior designers with the ability to offer their customers entry level affordable systems right through to comprehensive total automation installations. We view every project as an opportunity to innovate and take our systems to even higher performance levels.

In addition to delivering ever more subtle and flexible control, energy saving and optimising security through light management are key areas of development. Lighting Control systems offer a comprehensive, intelligent and easy-to-use LED dimming and controls solution. Basic dayto-day lighting scenarios, from simple dimming to scene-setting programmes, can be set, stored and recalled – all at the touch of a button.

45 LIGHTING

When researching control systems designers and specifiers should look at ease of installation and use as a priority – for example the encased dimmer hub should be straightforward to access and wire in, plus the software should allow maximum flexibility so the system can be tailored to meet customers’ requirements. Our programmable wall-mounted controllers are available as ‘Capacitive Touch controllers’ and ‘Mechanical Button controllers’ in an array of

styles and finishes. Control options include infra-red remote control and wireless control via iPad and iPhone using a downloadable app. Also it’s important that any lighting system selected can be integrated with an audio system for an entire lighting and sound package. More complex LED colour washing effects are made possible using DMX control. In recent years, the DMX standard is being used more frequently in domestic and commercial interior design, and

architectural lighting projects, including accent lighting and even illumination of building exteriors. DMX control empowers the user with the ability to create their own lighting effects – anything from manually dimming a light to creating colourful lighting programmes that can truly transform spaces of any size. Do your research, seize the technology and make it work for you and your clients. www.hamilton-litestat.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

46 RETAIL

A competitive market Specifiers must create an ambience in which end users will buy, says Mark Darnbrough, business development manager of Karndean Designflooring.

R

etail remains highly competitive, and with customers having instant access to products online anywhere they go, the physical shopping experience needs to be more engaging for customers than ever before. Of course, shoppers want to make purchases in stores that feel luxurious, contemporary or edgy, not dated or unattractive. With this in mind, architects and interior designers need to think carefully about how they can transform a store environment into an enjoyable experience at the time of specification. Architects and designers face the difficult job of educating retailers who can sometimes be stuck in the mindset of expecting their store design to reflect their typical customer profile. More so than ever, specifiers need to inspire and take customers by surprise with engaging colours, designs and textures. Selecting the right floor surface is undoubtedly one of the most important decisions to be made when planning a new retail interior or refitting an existing INEX-ONLINE.COM

space. The right surface needs to be straight-forward to install and easy to maintain, helping to reduce disruption to daily trading. It must also strike the right tone aesthetically yet be durable enough to withstand heavy footfall. Throughout 2013 we’ve seen architects and interior designers who would have ordinarily specified real wood and stone in retail spaces look to authentic wood and stone effect Luxury Vinyl Flooring (LVT) for its versatility, practicality and more importantly, endless design capabilities. Specifiers are looking to LVT as a durable surface that can retain its beauty without splitting or cracking when walked on by thousands of shoppers each day.

Flexibility in flooring is vital for designers looking to incorporate zoning. Specifiers need to look at incorporating sweeping curves, rug effects and borders around key displays to add interest and guide shoppers around a store. Designers should consider moving away from traditional straight laying patterns and look to make a statement and add character with random panel and parquet designs such as herringbone, shaker style or block designs. Colour will always be an important decision. The right colour can help to maintain the appearance of the floor in a harsh retail environment by disguising

47 RETAIL Far left and below: Midnight Oak by Karndean Designflooring for Clinton Cards Left: Urbus by Karndean Designflooring for Kiddicare

everyday dirt. Specifiers should look to strike the right balance with colour, not too light or too dark. Ultimately, colour choice will be led by the overall design concept, so designers should not be afraid to use pale colours in simple, clean environments. Likewise, the right colour can also be used to make a statement and define a brand. For example, Clintons recently specified dark wood toned floor using Karndean’s Art Select ‘Midnight Oak HC06’ for a contemporary and sharp new-look. Identity is crucial but what’s more important is individuality. Whereas specifiers would have previously been led to adopt a ‘cookie cutter’ approach in order to maintain brand consistency and keep up with the demand of new store openings, they’re now quickly moving away from this approach. We’re working closely with specifiers to introduce bespoke features and develop an artisan sensibility unique to each store location. This can be easily achieved by combining wood and stone effect floor surfaces and introducing inlaid feature pieces such as logos and slogans. As brands look to open stores on retail parks, designers are looking for surfaces to make a bigger impact in large spaces. This is where specifiers should look to extra-large planks and tiles to make the most of big areas. We’re supporting specifiers in achieving industrial and sealed concrete looks with distressed grey toned planks and tiles. For example, Kiddicare recently adopted the same formula using ‘Urbus SP213’ and ‘Ombra SP114’ from Karndean’s Opus collection, not only does it look the part it is also engaging. Durability is equally as important as the overall finished look when specifying in retail environments. Therefore, it is important flooring maintains its look under the pressure of daily trading, especially in traffic hotspots such as doorways and queuing stations. Choosing the correct wear layer is essential to make sure the store does not look tired before the next refurbishment is due. For peace of mind that the floor covering will stand the test of time in demanding retail spaces, specifiers should look to products with a wear layer depth of between 0.55mm and 0.7mm. A beautiful floor is a vital component and one of the most valuable commercial tools a retailer can invest in. A store layout is only limited by the imagination of the designer and when competing with the internet, there’s no time to play it safe. www.karndean.com «
