lthough interior design is always looking to the future, sometimes it’s just as nice to reminisce about the past, after all design is cyclical. This month Inex travels back to the decorative, sensual and uncompromising era of Art Nouveau.

The Tate defines Art Nouveau as an “international style in architecture and design that emerged in the 1890s and is characterised by sinuous lines and flowing organic shapes based on plant forms”. It’s a dynamic and expressive style characterised by motifs that include delicate tendrils, organic forms, swooping, swirling lines, eccentric geometry and exotic bodies and it oozes glamour. Walking into Gibson, the hustle and the bustle of the outside world immediately melts away as you’re transported to another era. Once you enter the restaurant inside the Hotel Bijou, you’ll immediately notice how glamorous and opulent it feels. But if you take the time to look a little closer at all the details – specifically the mural on the ceiling – you’ll see cherubs donning tattoos and Calvin Klein briefs, showing that design can be humorous without taking away from the allure. To explore this 1920s revival with a twist, turn to page 09. Not wanting to stay in the past too long, on page 18 Rob Kendal, Managing Director at Yulio Technologies, explains why designers should consider using virtual reality technology. He believes marketing has really done VR a disservice with images of complicated and cumbersome headsets that immerse a person in an alternate environment for hours on end and wants to show that fast VR is so much more than that. I hope you enjoy this edition. W

hen you step into Gibson inside of the Hotel Bijou, the first thing you’ll notice is how glamorous it feels – especially for San Francisco. The look leans heavily on Art Nouveau with lots of gorgeous tiles, shiny gold accents, and leather booths and banquettes. But if you look a little closer – specifically at the mural on the ceiling where the cherubs are sporting tattoos and Calvin Klein briefs – you’ll get your first clue that Gibson doesn’t take itself too seriously.

For inspiration, the designers played off the hotel’s name, from an era when Bijou was one of the most popular names for a movie house. The mural on the ceiling, Michelangelo meets street art-style, courtesy of Italian Artist, Marco Battaglini, is surrounded by clear bulbs reminiscent of a marquee. In place of a movie screen there’s a kitchen completely open to the dining room, similar to Chez Panisse and Saison. Diners don’t need a ticket to view the action at the stove and the glowing live fire where many dishes are cooked. Diners can watch the eight chefs, all dressed in blue shirts, jeans and dark wool aprons with leather straps, as they execute the eclectic smallplate menu. The restaurant has already been lauded by local critics and food blogs as the next hot thing. This spot has snuck into downtown, gracing the Hotel Bijou with a new destination for contemporary dining. Walking into Gibson is like stumbling into the ‘20s. It’s a hip, elegant throwback spot with Art Nouveau-style finishes, antique mirrors, a decorative ceiling layered with images of the renaissance and graffiti, and a constant golden glow from antique lighting fixtures. misterimportant.com

ENTERING THE AGE OF FAST VR Marketing has really done VR a disservice. Those images of complicated and cumbersome headsets that immerse a person in an alternate environment for hours on end are projecting the wrong idea when it comes to using VR in design practice. encounter designers every day who know VR is going to be disruptive, and who understand its potential to help them share their vision, speed up client communications and help them win business. But they have a picture in mind of complex cabled VR rigs that bring computing complexity and high price tags. Those complex systems only seem worth it if for those planning to design, iterate and present solely in VR, with clients willing to spend hours in the rig. And so smaller firms may disregard the potential of VR. But we’re entering the age of fast VR which has the power to transform your design process, and it’s an option that not enough designers

have considered. Fast VR is a principle, a habit, a way of bringing virtual reality into business situations and workflows at precise moments when it can do what it does best – quickly communicate the complex. With greater mobility, ease of use and different levels of fidelity, leading edge designers are bringing fast VR to their businesses as a practical, everyday business tool for firms of all sizes. 1 9

Take VR anywhere

Fast VR takes advantage of mobile VR headsets. Using just your smartphone, VR can be viewed with inexpensive clipon goggles, or slightly more expensive mobile headsets. With these mobile options, you have the opportunity to take VR to your clients, wherever they are located. Typically, about 80% of meetings are off site for most designers, so taking VR with you is critical if it is going to fit into your workflow. Mobile VR also provides the option to carry a VR portfolio in your pocket to share the designs you’ve created and win business. No, it’s not as immersive as full tethered VR – but the most beautiful renderings in the world won’t help you communicate with your clients if they are only available back at your office. Using mobile devices and simple headsets to deliver VR experiences means presentations are always at your fingertips and costs are minimised.

Simplicity

VR can just be a tool, it doesn’t need to be an experience. Don’t expect clients to spend hours strapped to a headset taking in every element of a design. Fast VR isn’t about convincing someone they’re in a room, it’s about enabling them to experience a spatial environment. There’s a very real feeling of isolation to being inside VR, and your clients may feel foolish or uncertain about putting on the headset. You don’t want to make your clients feel awkward about using technology while you’re trying to build trust. Again, the fast VR concept is the way to remove this friction. Consider VR as a pop in and out experience – show your clients a scene they spend a few moments glancing at, before removing the headset and having a discussion. Used in this way, our early adopter clients have found there are two real truths to VR. Firstly, it creates a much better sense of space and scale for clients who aren’t as comfortable as designers at working in standard heights and measurements. Secondly, it elevates client conversations through shared understanding. When your clients understand what you mean about a feeling you’re trying to evoke, or why you are recommending a certain finish, you move past explaining it and your clients have greater confidence to sign off and discuss other design elements. I N E X

R E A L I T Y V I R T U A L

Fidelity

Designers may feel intimidated by the ‘reality’ portion of virtual reality. There are very good reasons that you may not want to show a client full renders of a space – you may need a decision about the size of a fireplace before you worry about the shade of paint. There are several ways to resolve this with fast VR – you can show just the elements you want to discuss and render the rest of the VR scene as an empty room. Or show different levels of fidelity, from black and white sketches to guide space decisions, and later full photorealistic designs for final finishes. A growing number of our clients are no longer providing updated drawings during the iteration process but instead, being asked by their clients to simply update the VR experience in order to move more quickly to a project’s sign off. Designers can now use simpler VR to easily share their vision (in a hugely compelling way) to clients and carry their entire portfolio around with them on their phones. But focusing on complicated forms of VR has kept some designers from reaping the benefits of better client communication and embracing new technology. VR made all this possible; fast VR has made it viable. yulio.com 2 3

PARADISE WITHOUT LEAVING HOME

If there’s one place that should be the centre of a homeowner’s happiness, it’s their outdoor living space. As the great Anton Chekhov once said: “People don’t notice whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy.” And it’s true. Few things are better than endless days of relaxation in your own private paradise. Here, Cape Reed International, a specialist in creating eco-friendly customised outdoor living spaces, discusses three very different outdoor living spaces.

T

he overwhelming need to entertain and relax in the comfort of home in such a paradise planted the seed for a tailor-made outdoor living space for a property in The Villa Community, Dubai. Mainly motivated by the idea of having a suitable area at home that would reduce the need to go somewhere else to have fun, Cape Reed International was contracted to bring this idea to life.

Always up for a challenge, the team put their passion and years of international experience to the test and closely liaised with the client to create the ultimate entertaining area. Right from the start, Cape Reed was actively involved in the entire process – from the conceptual and design phases right up to the final construction, landscaping and interior decorating.

The overwhelming need to entertain and relax in the comfort of home was the catalyst for this project I N E X

A contemporary bar area was created to overlook the swimming pool and was designed with the primary aim of having great fun and is now the uncontested favourite spot to watch the game and entertain friends and family. The fully equipped bar and seating area is finished off with a builtin BBQ and fireplace that is absolutely perfect for preparing al-fresco dinners or setting just the right ambience by simply lighting a fire. To the side of the structure a lounge was incorporated to create a soft seating area where one can relax in a covered space that creates an easy flow from the indoors to the outdoors. Together with that, the view of the garden is masterfully paired with the timber and thatch surroundings so that nature is resonated in every corner of the structure, creating a sense of calm and serenity that is second to none. All of the natural material (timber and thatch) that was used for this project comes from sustainable resources and is imported directly from South Africa. Cape Reed places huge emphasis on the quality of its materials and practices strict quality control every step of the way. All structural timber is pressure treated and the thatch protected by special fire retarding methods that ensures a final product that not only meets the highest quality standards but one that is also extremely durable.

One would think in order to escape the ever-present Middle Eastern heat and humidity a swimming pool would be an absolute necessity. However, Cape Reed recently had a very different request from one client in Dubai’s high-calibre housing development, Jumeirah Islands. In this instance, the client had a very specific request to investigate ways in which to transform their swimming pool. Due to its limited size, it had not been utilised to the pool’s fullest capacity. After a brainstorming session, they proposed, and ultimately implemented, the following plan of action:

O U T D O O R

Something unusual

1. Drain the swimming

pool and remove any pool-related equipment.

2. Alter the current levels within the pool to create a comfortable sunken seating area.

3. Cover the area with an

original, custom-made Cape Reed thatched roof that will blend in with the natural vegetation and complement the immediate landscaping environment.

A natural tropical look

This build in Los Monteros, Marbella, took more than 1000 nuts and bolts to form the structure with 200 specially selected and pressure treated poles. During the thatching process, 5000 bundles of thatch together with 682m of twine and 120m² of fire retardant Fireshield was used to accomplish structural perfection. One of the prerequisites of the site was that no vegetation was to be destroyed or harmed in the process of construction. The goal was that the end product ensures the garden retains its natural tropical look slotting in the natural structure as if it was there all along. The end result for all these projects? An extremely satisfied customer with a beautiful, versatile space in which the family can spend quality time together, relax or entertain guests in a stylish, yet casual manner. capereed.com

EMBRACE MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE Known for its uncomplicated, clean aesthetic, Mid-Century Modern style still looks as fresh today as it did 50 years ago. Organic shapes, tapered legs and natural materials combine to create designs that are both stylish and comfortable. ating back to the period between the mid-1930s and the mid-1960s, Mid-Century Modern style emerged as a popular design aesthetic after World War II. More than just interior design and decor, the term refers to architecture, art, literature, furniture and accessories. Nowadays, as an interior design and decorating style, Mid-Century Modern encompasses everything from an Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair to a gold and wood Starburst wall clock. It can regularly be seen filtering through the work of 21stcentury designers and has achieved cult-like status with design-lovers everywhere. If you want to embrace Mid-Century Modern style in a home, these are the most common elements to consider.

I N E X

A P R I L

2 0 1 8

Furniture

You will know Mid-Century furniture when you see it – it’s sleek, with clean lines and sophisticated curves that make it instantly recognisable.

Seating

For a sofa that boasts a vintage yet glamorous aesthetic, look no further than the Mid-Century trend. These large visual pieces have beautiful upholstery, with matching piping and strong symmetrical lines. 4 0

Tapered feet are a classic feature of modernist design and a sofa can easily be accessorised with Mid-Century-inspired patterned scatter cushions. If you’re looking to invest in something with a smaller footprint, consider a statement chair. Although there are many designer chairs available today, there are two Mid-Century Modern designers who stand out from the competition: Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames.

Eero Saarinen’s designs employ modern materials in graceful, organic shapes that create perfectlycurved chairs such as the famous Womb and Tulip chairs. These groundbreaking pieces were designed to support countless lounging positions providing ultimate comfort. Another staple of Mid-Century design is the Ottoman lounge chair by Charles and Ray Eames. It’s the ideal way to combine comfort, sophistication and functionality in a client’s home – perfect as a standalone feature or paired with a wooden table. These chairs are conveniently available in a variety of colours to suit every Mid-Centurystyle home. Mid-Century Modern interiors rely on the use of fewer choice pieces. The aim is to not clutter a space. It’s about adopting a minimalist style in open-plan rooms to draw attention to each piece of furniture.

Organic forms

Mid-Century design is often free-form, unpredictable and flowing in appearance. Fortunately, the modernist design approach hasn’t changed much over the centuries. We can incorporate fascinating pieces, such as the organic glass coffee table from Isamu Noguchi, into an interior design scheme. The Noguchi table has a solid wood base consisting of two identical pieces that create symmetry and stability. It’s the perfect centrepiece for a MidCentury-style living room. I N E X

Wood

Mid-20th-century designers commonly used natural materials in their designs. Using wood can give even the most contemporary space a Mid-Century Modern look. To create a natureinspired style, consider using a wooden dining room table, chest of drawers, television AV unit 4 4

or wardrobe. The Romana dining table by ercol is one of those rare designs that never dates ensuring stylish practicality for years to come. ercol emerged in the post-war era with a passion for creating furniture that was both well-designed and wellmade. Nearly 70 years later, the brand’s design

icons are still as stylish today as they were in the 1950s and its long-lasting reputation for creating pieces that stand the test of time is what sets it apart from other modern-day furniture makers. Wooden cabinets, ceiling details and doors can also be used to add warmth to a space. Whichever way you choose to use timber, investing in carved wood furnishings will bring everything together nicely. When working wood into a space, be sure to utilise one range of colours and avoid

using contrasting hues. Finding pieces with similar undertones – warm yellows, reds and oranges, cool greys, or neutral beiges – will help to keep a room unified.

Lighting

When it comes to lighting, there’s no need to be modest – using unique and eye-catching fixtures are encouraged. 4 5

Colour and pattern

Be sure to explore earthy hues of orange, mustard yellow, olive green, soft blue and brown. Consider George Nelson’s iconic Atomic and Sunburst clock designs, which are ideal for hanging alongside modern art and sculptures in a living room. Or you can simply decorate a space with an amber vase, yellow velvet cushions or a vintage desk lamp to give it a Mid-Century Modern feel. I N E X

A P R I L

2 0 1 8

Use asymmetrical and abstract patterned cushions and throws for an effective way to add interest to a Mid-Century Modern-style home. Using understated geometric patterns, calm greys and blues are mixed with shots of yellow and green to bring a modern twist to British heritage. 4 6

Home accessories are the easiest and quickest way to add creativity, a touch of texture and pizzazz to Mid-Century Modern style. Reject the minimalist approach and instead add pieces that pack a punch. heals.com

BALKAN BEAUTY Nostalgia meets modernity in a 1930s villa where an opulent marble bathroom inspired by the hedonistic hammams of Turkey and the Balkans has been created.

marble. The industry flourished for millennia, the quality fine enough to satisfy the temple builders of Ancient Rome, but lying dormant for decades. 4 8

Fox Marble is regenerating a formerly troubled, newly-independent region, encouraging investment and economic stability. It owns the quarries and processing factory, an advantage for professional designers and developers to keep prices lower than competitors’, maximise efficiency and cut out time-wasting middlemen. This exotic red and white marble bathroom was fitted by a skilled craftsman, but the design and concept came from the owners themselves, an entrepreneur and Business Executive, who decided to build a sympathetic extension to accommodate their three children.

M A R B L E

The house is a fivebedroom 1930s detached villa in a secluded Hertfordshire village. The floorplan for the extension is almost twice the original size, with plans to build a swimming pool. They had basked in scented bathhouses (hammams) on frequent travels to Turkey and the Balkans, longing to recreate a Turkish experience in their own home.

Jon Mitchell of Fox Marble describes the project: “The challenge was how to fit the homeowners’ vision into a 3.7 x 3m modern box without it looking overornate. The result was, in design terms, quite a lot simpler than a typical hammam, but the stone and the colour, for us, captured the spirit of the inspiration.” 4 9

The owners described how they were attracted to the idea of using an exclusive stone from somewhere they knew. They wanted to use stone that might have been available to the region’s original hammam builders to give the project a real sense of coherence. Top-to-toe marble in such a relatively small space could have looked excessive but the clever choice of colour, a rich tone to highlight part of the floor and around the door frames, with a more subdued grey with white on the walls and the remainder of the floor, created a striking but not overwhelming aesthetic. The room required .15m2 of Breccia Paradisea and 75m2 of Alexandrian white. It was purchased as industry-standard 2cmthick stone slab with a polished finish. It was essential to commission a craftsman exceptionally skilled in cutting, fitting and installing marble. The homeowners worked with Bekim Derguti of Natural Stones Production. The master craftsman and his team took three weeks to complete the project. The main lighting consists of 15 standard LED spots augmented by a simple double light over the sink and two windows. mood lighting was in and around the shower which has an illuminated step as well as internal LEDs. Much of the room was bespoke. Cupboards and shelves were built by a local carpenter and the shower cubicle was also bespoke. The homeowners added: “We commissioned the extension with solid concrete foundations, so the weight of stone was never going to be a problem. The stone 5 0

from Fox Marble worked well with the planned underfloor heating. “It was really only the use of the marble as a material and the traditional combination of colours, which echo early ideas of a hammam. But, just as it did for the Ottomans, it feels right for our bathroom, it is clean, luxurious and yet functional.” foxmarble.net

A FLAGSHIP SHOWROOM

Heritage furniture and interiors brand Heal’s opened its first store in Birmingham with a showroom designed by award-winning design company, Office Twelve.

L

ocated in the Mailbox, Birmingham’s premier shopping and lifestyle destination, the new store is Heal’s regional flagship for the Midlands. The Mailbox unveiled its new 20,000ft2 homewares section on Level 1 of the shopping centre, and Heal’s full product portfolio is available to touch and try before buying online, in-store or at home. Within a restricted fixed budget and short lead time, the brief demanded a

show-stopping, evolving pop-up space designed to delight visitors and promote Heal’s premium retail offer. The state-ofthe-art showroom would showcase Heal’s online best-sellers, driving traffic towards the full offer and encouraging online purchasing. 5 8

Office Twelve designed and made bespoke furniture and displays to echo the premium Heal’s brand throughout the experience – showrooming contemporary furniture, a home fragrance area, lighting, chair bar, soft furnishings and upholstery.

An online browse bar encourages customers to discover the entire Heal’s offer. Store staff carry hand-held devices to take customers to the Heal’s website and guide them through the much wider ranges available online. The showroom space is simple yet sophisticated, featuring unpretentious materials in eye-catching contemporary forms to complement Heal’s superbly edited collections.

Every moment of the showroom customer journey is designed to delight visitors with carefully curated displays and touchpoints. Highlights from Heal’s new collection feature alongside bestsellers from brands such as Vitra, Case and Tom Dixon. Classics like the iconic 5 9

Eames chair are elevated to hero status through subtle staging and lighting. “Our Mailbox showroom offers the finest in furniture design from Heal’s as well as internationally -recognised designers and brands,” Heal’s Chief Executive Hamish Mansbridge said. I N E X

“The shop itself will be a unique retail space that will bring the best of our online offering to Birmingham. “Birmingham is now recognised as one of the top shopping destinations in the UK, so Birmingham City Centre and the Mailbox are the perfect platform for Heal’s to promote its premium retail offering within a hugely popular lifestyle location which is well accessible to the wider Midlands region and its incoming visitors.” In keeping with Heal’s ethos of good design, well made, the simplicity of the store design is shrewdly deceptive.

High-quality finishing is apparent everywhere, with honest materials expertly crafted by hand. Hamish continues: “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for Heal’s, giving us a new regional flagship store in the Midlands. This significant move shows the desire of local residents for beautiful, well-made pieces of furniture that will stand the test of time. 6 1

D E S I G N

The challenge for delivering the Mailbox Showroom concept was to provide a premium experience on a limited pop-up budget. The execution needed to convey the quality and heritage of a highly-established brand into a new market audience that may not be aware of Heal’s. The concept was based around the Heal’s ‘ticking pattern’ brand identity with a contemporary twist. The goal was to elevate chosen products amid the strong VM as key Heal’s callouts, and to establish a design language to highlight the brand within a large open-plan, multibrand showroom. The solution was to minimise costs by using honest materials in simple and effective ways. Laminated marble, matte linoleum, brushed brass and ash onto plywood and coloured MDF were cut into shapes formed from the Heal’s ‘ticking pattern’ identity. This way, each sheet of timber was used with minimum wastage, and an honest approach saw the edge of the structural material clearly visible. The ticking pattern informed the visual identity for each fixture, and Office Twelve used the Heal’s blue colour as a callout to help the customer identify the brand. This bold use of colour was an evolution from Heal’s existing stores, and helps to make the brand feel premium and contemporary. High-quality finishing pushed the boundaries on concealing fixings on hooks, shelves and furniture, further conveying a detailed, premium, simple, yet cost-effective solution across the store.

A STORY OF COLOUR

In the historical centre of Budapest, near the Castle of Buda, lies an apartment with the most beautiful view of the city.

D

esign studio Margeza redesigned the apartment with the aim to recreate the spaces and make them more livable. The apartment has a beautiful view of the city and showing this was a primary consideration. One of the most iconic buildings of Budapest, the Parliament, and the river that splits the city is in full view, and Margeza wanted to emphasise this. The Parliament is visible even from the bath.Â

The interior style of the apartments is minimalistic but also colourful and bohemian. Gentle curves create balance between the spots of colour and the white of the apartment. The design studio does not conform to any rules in this interior. It uses curving furniture and walls, but livens the scheme up with vivid colours and irregularly-shaped spaces that give a sense of playfulness. The white background allows for the use of strong, vivid colours, meaning that the accessories define the mood. Margeza didn’t leave anything standing in the apartment. Due to bad divisions, every wall was knocked down and rebuilt – it was a complete renovation. The circle became the main motif for the scheme. It appears on the doors, lamps, even the armchairs. Many pieces of furniture were designed by Margeza and handmade by a team of carpenters. In the living room there are two items that define it: the living green wall, which brings nature into the apartment, and the glass wall, which frames picture-perfect views of the city. All the walls in the flat are white, there is a lot of light. Little spots of colour make the area feel energetic and lively. The green wall in the living room is fed by an automatic irrigation system.

The window is made from triple-layered safety glass. The bench in front of it floats on glass legs. The two yellow armchairs are Italian designs from the 80s. The white wool carpet decorates the living room. It is a unique item designed specifically for this apartment. It shows a map of Budapest, with the different districts rendered with different woollengths. In the middle, the river crossing the city, the Danube is in blue. On it is a little red dot; marking the location of the flat itself. Its name is: ‘Budapest. You are here’. The kitchen surrounds the chimney like a peninsula. The cupboards under the stairs hold kitchen appliances and storage space. The kitchen counter and the stairs are made of Corian. The stairs were designed by Margeza, as well as the kitchen and the furniture, which were made to size by a carpenter. The doors were similarly fabricated.

The ‘floating’ bed was designed by Margeza 7 1

The dining room hosts a Leolux table, surrounded by Kartell chairs like the petals of a flower. The arched windows were a given, but previously they had many small panes with dividers breaking up the view. Margeza had special window panes made here, supported top and bottom by anchors, thus there are no dividing lines to draw the eye away from the beautiful park seen through them. It is rare that a loft apartment has a view of a park, but due to the hill it is the case here. There’s no need for curtains! I N E X

The ‘floating’ bed and curved cabinet in the bedroom on the bottom floor were drawn up by Margeza, too. The red radiator brings dynamism and energy to the white bathroom. The giant mirror enlarges the space. margeza.com 7 2

he silkworm is one of the most iconic insects that experiences a morphosis during its entire evolution. Although born as a worm, it then morphs into a butterfly after the process of maturation. Within the silk industry most of the Bombyx mori are killed in order to extract the silk from the cocoon, but what if we let the worm become a butterfly? 7 7

How can we use this material differently and celebrate the morphosis of the insects? Frenchborn and British-based Marlène Huissoud is an experimental Designer who has attempted to answer these questions. Her pieces have been made by using an accumulation of thousands of silkworms’ cocoons which are then varnished with a thin layer of a natural honeybee bio resin. I N E X

ORTUS The latest bespoke commission by British Artist and Sculptor, David Harber.

A

ward-winning Artist, David Harber, introduces his latest piece – a bespoke sculpture for a private island off the South Coast of England. The piece takes its name, Ortus, from the Latin ‘sunrise’, which was chosen by the family who commissioned it. David Harber accompanied Ortus on its maiden voyage to its new home from Poole Harbour. The work is based upon David Harber’s iconic Torus, but has been customised to reflect the rugged landscape of the island on which it will sit. The end result is a striking 3.25m Iris’ of copper pipe, suspended within a majestic marinegrade stainless steel ring. Using ancient astronomical observations and an accurate engraved compass plate, the entire sculpture is designed to be rotated by hand each evening so as to align with the point on the horizon where the sun will rise the next day, appearing through the kaleidoscope of copper branches at the sculpture’s core. David Harber comments: “The owners wished to have a sculpture that had an astronomical use, and a striking modern use of materials that would complement the wild nature that will surround it. This resulted in the seemingly random interconnected labyrinth of Verdigris copper rods held within a mirror-polished, stainless steel, knife-edged rim giving the feeling of an all-seeing eye to the sun.” davidharber.co.uk

Zanetti was commissioned to install 220m2 of Calacatta Oro, Grigio Carnico and Nublado natural marble to the entrance hall and corridor areas of this five-star hotel, named England’s top hotel in the AA Hospitality Awards 2017. “We worked closely with contractor Galliford Try and EPR Architects on this project,” said Mr Zanetti. “Recognition of our experience and expertise in being able to undertake and deliver the high-quality work required, together with a competitive price, helped us win the contract.” The Gainsborough Bath Spa is housed in a historic Grade II Listed Building in the centre of Bath, a World Heritage site. The hotel is centred around spa village Bath and has privileged access to the natural thermal, mineralrich waters. “In addition to the entrance hall, we supplied and installed bespoke-cut, natural marble benches, plus a stunning mosaic feature in the sauna and steam room areas,” said Mr Zanetti. “In any project of this size, there were inevitably issues we had to overcome. 1 0 2

“For example, being an old building, the corridors were out of square to the main entrance but we had the resourcefulness to overcome this by taking out the tolerance in the border.” The NFTMMS represents companies which wish to maintain and improve the standards of craftsmanship and technical control on which the industry depends.
