W
ith the year drawing to a close the industry looks ahead to 2014. This month, Inex is delighted to present an entire issue dedicated to keeping you abreast of emerging hues for the new year, helping you to deliver projects that ooze sophistication with innovation. Highlights from this issue include Paul Barratt from Karndean Designflooring discussing why attitudes towards ceramic and porcelain floor tiles are shifting within the commercial sector. Read his flooring recommendations on page 20. Also, with so many kitchen storage solutions now available choosing the right option may seem a daunting task. Häfele UK’s Kerry Baulch explains which options work best for different kitchen spaces on page 30. Sustainability is a hot topic for interior design as ecofriendly products continue to appear on the market. I recently had the pleasure of talking to sanitary fittings specialists Grohe’s Senior Vice President of Design, Paul Flowers, and Managing Director, Maha El Khabortly. We had an interesting discussion about how sustainable attitudes are embedded within our European neighbour’s cultures and that the UK could learn so much from them. Sustainability need not seem a battle or even something that you need to pay more for. Read about how Grohe approaches sustainability on page 12. Being the time of year to look back, on behalf of the Inex team I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our valued readership, for your support with the launch of Inex this year, and wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

The Windsor collection merges traditional British design with Italian style
Profiling the Windsor With the industry concentrating on upcoming trends for 2014, Inex spoke to The Sofa & Chair Company’s designer, Alexandr, about the inspiration behind their spring/summer collection, Windsor. What can we look forward to from the new Windsor range? While the range does include some plush ottomans, Windsor is really all about the sofa. One of the most difficult pieces to make, this sofa epitomises our craftsmanship and quality. All of the deep-button placements were calculated and upholstered by hand with painstaking attention to detail. Applying the deep-buttoning to the rounded corners was particularly tricky. As such, the piece is quite exclusive and not your average sofa. What was your initial source of inspiration behind these pieces? The range merges inspiration from a combination of traditional British design features and Italian style. Following a visit to the Milan furniture fair we decided that we wanted to do something uniquely British, but with real ‘wow’ factor. How do you feel it conveys this inspiration? The Windsor accomplishes this amalgamation by being
both visually commanding and elegantly traditional; something a little bit different and not confined to existing design standards and styles. Are there any specific design or fashion trends that these pieces reflect? Not particularly. It is an eclectic piece, and as such in a league of its own. Fashion trends are changeable and often subjective, whereas Windsor is something timeless and unquestionably beautiful. In what interiors do you best visualise this piece fitting? Windsor is made to dominate. It is an iconic piece that belongs in the centre of a very large room. It
befits a sophisticated interior with plenty of space so that it can sit a good distance from any walls. This is absolutely not a piece for the corner of the room! It works well as part of a conversation set, with armchairs and ottomans encircling it; creating a cosy space ideal for large groups and families. Do you have any recommendations for furnishings or accessories that you would pair these pieces with? Beautiful, quality accessories, of the sort that can be found in our homeware collection. This is a sizable piece of furniture that can accommodate a good deal of accessorising; including the use of INEX-ONLINE.COM

stylish throws and bold cushions to complement and accentuate its lavish features. What do you think today’s consumers are looking for most in their furniture? They are looking for the same design trends and standards of quality that can be observed in top Italian designer brands but at better prices; giving them maximum value for money. We satisfy these demands so that they do not have to compromise or accept second best; infusing our own Sofa & Chair touch. What is your favourite Sofa & Chair product and why? My favourite is the Enzo collection. I like it so much I have it at home! It is modern, easy-going, light and well suited to a breezy, contemporary interior. It’s a versatile and comfortable piece and I think it just looks cool! What predictions do you have for furniture trends in the future? While some modern designers might dabble with quirky, futuristic designs, the demand will always

exist for a comfortable, quality piece of furniture and this is where our efforts are grounded. Because most trends are unstable and transient, we try to set ourselves apart from those that aren’t deeply embedded into our culture. Our aim is always to set the trends rather than follow them. What do you predict is next on the Sofa & Chair design horizon? We have a lot of developments on the horizon in terms of our production and retail capabilities. Next year we will be opening a brand new showroom and expanding our workshop to incorporate new machines, more staff and a more streamlined production process. We believe this will enable us to increase production output and meet the growing demand for our products. In spite of this expansion, we will maintain our techniques of traditional hand-craftsmanship, we have no intention of becoming automated and mass-produced! From concept to craftsmanship, The Sofa & Chair Company offer modern buyers something a little different. When it comes to serving the capital’s leading interior designers the company has long been London’s best kept secret; but now over 10 years since their formation they are breaking new ground by offering everyone the opportunity to own truly iconic pieces of British-made designer furniture. thesofaandchair.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

The last personal sanctuary With 33 red dot awards, 6 production plants worldwide and a presence in more than 130 countries, Grohe is the world’s leading provider of sanitary products. As the headline sponsor at last month’s hotel design show, Sleep, Editor, Emily Smith, spoke to Senior Vice President of Design Paul Flowers and Managing Director Maha El Khabortly about how the UK needs to be educated about water consumption, design zoning and what’s in store for the future. Grohe understands the value of design and in 2004 the company restructured itself to have more of a design-led focus. Having previously worked for well-known innovative companies Electrolux and Phillips, Paul was persuaded to leave Italy for Germany and, rather unusually, report directly to the CEO as Vice President of Design. The Grohe Ondus was the first product that really highlighted this change for the brand as it won their first red dot best of best in 2007 and it has grown since then, winning no fewer than five accolades at the 2012 Good Design Awards. With a history of marketing and INEX-ONLINE.COM
sales diversity behind her, Maha became the first female MD for Grohe in 2012. Since joining the business Grohe has expanded rapidly and, as Paul highlighted, this certainly isn’t a coincidence as Maha delivered 8% growth in 2012 and has kept the momentum through 2013 as Grohe has launched over 300 new products. E: How would you advise interior designers to approach bathroom design concepts? P: People always ask me what my design style is and I always say that I try not to have one because

good design is objectivity. It’s about understanding who you’re designing for, you should remove yourself from it as you’re not the person you’re trying to connect with. At Grohe we design successful ranges for people across the globe and that’s because we understand what those particular consumers want. First of all, be objective - who’s using it, when and why, and then create zones. We have four bathroom zones: preparation, rejuvenation, relaxation and recreation. For the preparation zone think literal preparation and what’s

important for that. Perhaps women applying makeup and men shaving, so a good mirror and lighting is important, maybe magnification. The rejuvenation zone is around the shower. People get into the shower not to relax like a bath, but for different reasons, so from that concept we created showers that have bokoma sprays, like the head massager, that stimulate blood flow. Thinking about what that zone means has enabled us to create a physiological change through water. The relaxation zone is around the bathtub. So, thinking about what you might need to relax, sensorial elements come to mind such as smell. We launched products like the F-digital Deluxe where you can control combinations of lighting, sound and steam. We even have a range of Grohe spa candles. The forth zone is the recreation zone. It’s all part of our concept of transforming a rational space into an emotional space. View the bathroom as an emotional space, it’s personal and private, you’re naked and there’s a lock on the

door –a personal sanctuary. E: How does Grohe approach sustainability and concerns for water consumption? P: We believe in a concept of creative thinking and we look at many different problems. An obvious way is including eco-buttons, which entice consumers to reduce consumption, things on our thermastats and lots of technologies that are reducing water consumption. M: As a company we are very eco-friendly, but we don’t force it, we give customers the option. You might have an eco shower, but it doesn’t work with you because you have long hair or you have low pressure because you’re high up, so then you associate eco with a bad experience. The button is flexible so that it gives the individual the right experience and then it’s not a negative thing. P: If you have long hair you’ll rinse your hair until all the shampoo is gone, so how is that ecological? All you do is slow down the experience and it’s a negative one. Another example is when, a few years ago, we changed our showerheads from 45 degrees to 7. We sell our products to 130 countries across the world and doing this meant that we reduced packaging by 50% which has reduced our carbon footprint by more than 40%! This INEX-ONLINE.COM

proves that small insights have a dramatic effect. Materials are obviously very important. We are the second biggest producer of brass in Europe (second to the military), so now we have produced our own ‘special recipe’ of brass where we have removed 95% of the lead. It’s interesting living in Germany because sustainability is so deep rooted into the culture that I don’t need to hammer these concepts and it’s really easy to make them happen. E: What steps can Britain take to adapt to these concepts? M: We are helping businesses to understand what eco means. We offer hotels the free opportunity for us to come in and audit their water, heating and electricity consumptions. We help them to understand their water consumption and give them options to let them know how to save money and also become an eco-hotel. For example, rooms on different floors require different products and what we have seen is that we are saving companies up to 43% on their utility bills.
Left: Grohe’s F-digital Deluxe is a superslim and intuitive ambient controller that orchestrates the new collection of products designed to stimulate the senses. By touching the ‘dry
P: I read in the UK news recently about the rising utility bills and water is the only one to be capped and I thought to myself, that is probably going to be good for ecological consumption because economical incentive will push consumers. Research all over the world has found that without an incentive people don’t want to give up that great experience. For big brands like ours, it really is our responsibility. And not just brands that have a cultural background, but I think all should take the responsibility, even local brands, when they deliver to the consumer, that as long as they have a great experience with some kind of economical incentive then they are happy to reduce consumption. M: Our eco products are not priced more than the standard products even though they have more componants. For us, eco is not something that you should pay more for. I really expect us to see a good return on our investment there as utility bills increase because everyone thinks ‘it’s only water’, but if you turn on hot water then the furnace has to kick in and then you are already using gas and electicity. P: I guess it’s education as well because people in the UK are not as conscious of it. I’m always interested to come home and see the supermarket adverts that are saving you pennies and the same consumers who rationalise which supermarket to shop in are at home wasting money and resource without even realising because in UK culture water in a commodity. Showing people that you can save money is a big incentive, especially if you’re a business, but at the same time you can communicate this to the people who, in the case of this event - Sleep - stay in that hotel.

P: Digital is going to be huge. With digital technology I can create different sprays that produce a better experience using less water. Digital is expensive at the moment, but as technology becomes more mainstream it also becomes more affordable. There will be more diagnostic products coming through in the next 10 years that will tell you about your health. There will also be a transition for the bathroom environment as it merges with the bedroom. This is being pushed by hotel interior design and that’s coming from a lifestyle change. Our parents generation might have only had one bathroom in the home, but now new houses are built with almost a bathroom per bedroom. This obviously throws new challenges, as when the kitchen was opened into the living space noise and odours had to be considered, there will be new challenges as the bathroom is opened, such as moisture. E: What sets Grohe apart from competitors? P: I guess it’s the speed and rate of innovation. If you look at how we have transformed our product portfolio, we release new products at a rate that is unheard of in our industry. What sets us apart is our humanity. We worked with Pink Ribbon by creating pink showers and donating money to Breast Cancer research. Today we are launching flower bumpers for children that sit on top of our rain showers. When we are known around the world for being a high performance, high technological brand, these products show a humanity that people often don’t see.
Above: Paul Flowers is Grohe’s Vice
M: Grohe is known for its technology and innovation quality, but it’s also known for its design being more geared towards an engineer designing it. When we brought Paul onboard he humanised the brand and made it consumer design-driven. This for me was a big pillar for Grohe because design is such a critical element. E: How does Grohe approach research and development? P: We do really advanced physiological research. For example, how do you ascertain what the best spray is? If I gave you the same shower we would both have different opinions and often what you articulate isn’t actually the truth. So we attached people to electrodes and measured their physiological response by spraying different types of water on them. At Grohe we have a unique synergy in that different departments work together. I’ve worked for big companies and they do lots of research, but this is the first company where I’ve worked closely with the sales people, which is a great source of customer insight and direct feedback. Many thanks to Paul, Maha and the Grohe team. grohe.com/uk «

Tile trend change The sales of ceramic and porcelain floor tiles have again experienced lower demand in the commercial sector according to figures published recently in Ceramic and Natural Stone Tiles Market Report. Paul Barratt, Managing Director at Karndean Designflooring, explains this industry change. INEX-ONLINE.COM
Interior designers and architects continue to look to Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) as a tough, practical and durable alternative to natural stone and ceramic tiles in commercial spaces. Stone effect LVT tiles offer the sophistication, look and feel of natural stone whilst providing the durability needed for heavy footfall commercial areas. In 2013 we have seen extra-large tiles rise in popularity for adding instant ‘wow factor’ to any commercial décor. Ideal for achieving a modern minimalist look, large format tiles enable a room to automatically appear streamlined and spacious – perfect, therefore, for open plan hospitality, leisure and retail environments. Our Opus range, with its extra-large tiles and wide planks, has played a significant role in supporting this look. With the added benefit of quicker installation times for less disruption, the trend for large format tiles is set to continue in 2014.
Monochrome and chequerboard tile trends remain popular for a dramatic and eye catching look in commercial spaces. When it comes to colour trends, black and grey remain the colours of choice for statement and iconic floors. Smoky charcoal, graphite grey and black tones can be particularly effective when laid on an angle or with light or metallic design strips. On the other end of the spectrum, if you are looking to create a sense of space or project light in modern, contemporary spaces, look to chalky white toned tiles.
21 TILING
Next year’s big trend is going to be marbles. We’re seeing a surge in popularity towards buffed, tumbled and unfinished marble, particularly in white and grey tones. Moving away from bold and busy pattern tiles, we are expecting to see more texture, intricate detail and designflooring in both commercial and residential spaces. Importantly, it will see us introducing on-trend travertine, marble and slate tile designs. Random panel designs and variable tile sizes are also going to remain popular for creating statement floors and zoning in spaces. Making a statement is easy
with metallic, mosaic and pebble tile effect flooring. What’s more, lighting works well with the reflective qualities of metallic finishes. For something totally unique, bespoke is back. Inspired by natural materials, architects and interior designers are coming to Karndean to replicate real stone and ceramic tiles to a required specification for commercial projects. Our ability to bring every fine detail of our stone tile designs to life sets us apart in the industry, with some of our products offering a unique registered emboss finish, guaranteeing a more realistic look

and feel to our floors. This meticulous attention to detail paired with advanced print film technology means Karndean can match the natural pattern and colour of stone materials. Although, colour, texture and design play a major part in the specification process, ultimately a floor tile needs to perform and require little care and maintenance. Selecting a durable and practical floor covering will be a key driver alongside next year’s tile trends. karndean.com «

Creating a new market Sektor With constantly evolving trends and changing regulations, the interiors market can be incredibly challenging. Noel Robinson, Technical and Training Manager for Sektor, the brand of interior solutions from leading distributor CCF, discusses the strategy behind launching a new name which meets a number of very specific customer concerns.
C
ontractors, architects, and facility managers are faced with the daily trial of not only creating a workable space, which meets legislative and budgetary requirements, but one which is aesthetically pleasing to the building occupants. It was clear to CCF that a range of fresh interior solutions was needed to simplify this situation, making it easier to meet tight installation schedules and please eager clients. Despite launching in September
2013, a team of CCF’s industry experts have been working on developing Sektor for nearly two years. The time was spent making sure the range of professional interior solutions, including glazed and flexible partitioning, cubicles, storage walls, shelving, and doors were designed to specifically meet contractor demand for value, availability, reliability and service. The first stage in Sektor’s growth was analysing customer needs and defining how the range could bring something different to market. By taking the approach of identifying requirements before the design stage, the team quickly recognised three key fundamentals: the solutions must be high-quality and simple to install, have flexibility with existing components and are readily available for over the counter purchase or rapid delivery.
Above: Sektor introduces a fresh interior solution for office spaces as open plan becomes increasingly popular. Left: Whether the need is for partitioning, moveable walls, or simply doors, Sektor is a single source of materials, components and expertise.

Combining this with the knowledge of industry figureheads has provided a technical vision to ensure product design was approached from the installer’s point of view. This put ease of installation at the top of the agenda, resulting in some of the most extensive and flexible ranges on the market. It was clear that a reliable service is equally important to customers – as the own brand of CCF, Sektor is not only available from a number of UK locations and via the brand new website, but it takes just two to three days for the delivery of a complete partitioning system. Confidence of the solutions themselves and their arrival, on
time and in full, is crucial to success. The Sektor sales network has been designed to work closely with refurbishment and fit-out contractors to provide a tailored approach in a market where service is king. Supported by 19 Sektor ‘gurus’, who will be based at 19 CCF branches across the UK, the sales team are in the ideal position to deliver a trusted and reliable service. Added support to meet the most demanding specifications covering fire, acoustic and structural performances is also an important element of modern customer requirements. A lot of investment was therefore made in the Sektor website, which is complete with installation guides and technical drawings. This is supported by the option for training. Held at the Sektor showroom at CCF Heathrow, the training courses will take attendees through the practical application of Sektor products and provide a ‘hands on’ experience prior to purchase. Led by Sektor experts, customers will discover the fine details behind the design of each range, including fire and acoustic ratings.
CCF recognised the need for the design and development of products that solve problems faced by contractors on a daily basis. The resulting range of Sektor products has created a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality solutions for all environments, budgets, and aesthetic requirements. A range of products from the Sektor portfolio is available online and exclusively through branches of leading merchant CCF with a product showroom in Heathrow. Customers can contact their nearest CCF branch to book a visit to the Sektor Showroom at CCF Heathrow. sektorinteriors.com «

will continue to be favourites in the coming years. In response to this Garpa has extended its range. The Pan series – stainless steel with hand-laced synthetic fibre – proved extremely popular at Sleep 2013. This furniture brings a fresh accent to the bistro area on terraces and balconies, and can be elegantly supplemented with modern curved-frame or single pedestal tables with tops of easy to clean, durable HPL. Individual for special requirements Interior-exterior situations such as a bar-lounge area can be fitted out with exclusive furniture of modern design. Bar furniture in aluminium and HPL or teak creates an unpretentious, contemporary feel. Timeless design Furniture in traditional designs and materials will continue to enjoy popularity, which is a good prospect for the classics of the Garpa collection. Free from the trappings of fashion, this furniture will never be out of place. Generally, the awareness of the need for sustainability, the demand for easy maintenance and especially durable products, is on the increase. All furniture materials must satisfy the high requirements of a discerning clientele. This includes absolute outdoor durability, good care qualities, reliable functionality, and flexible and simple
operation. Service, too, is of special interest: products must be available on a long-term basis, spare parts in stock at all times. The proof of origin of materials must be documented. For example, Garpa uses exclusively, legally felled teak from sustainably run plantations. The executive director of Garpa, Katja Holert, comments: ‘Right from the beginning, it was our decision to use only premiumclass materials for our furniture – materials whose superb quality ensures beauty and comfort even after years of use. Exclusiveness, careful selection, and meticulous workmanship are a guarantee of durability and in the long run, justify the investment. Quite consciously, we do not follow shortlived trends, but put our trust in timeless design that satisfies the current wishes of our customers. In interaction with architects and object designers, we maintain: their requirements determine our range’. garpa.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Stretching the limits Stuart Jones, Managing Director of Co2nscience, looks at the growing trend towards recycled home decor from eco-conscious homeowners and designers and the latest innovations that allow waste materials to be transformed into high-end decoration for the home.
INEX-ONLINE.COM
With the importance of sustainable building now widely accepted in mainstream thinking, a growing number of architects, interior designers and homeowners are turning their attention towards sustainable interiors. We have seen a rise in popularity for the use of reclaimed and recycled materials in interior design and this looks set to be one of the key design trends of 2014. Eco-friendly interiors do not need to compromise on style, evident from the fact that ‘eco-
chic’ has become a key design trend in recent years. In fact, one of the main appeals for many eco-conscious designers and homeowners is the potential to make something beautiful from something that is, quite literally, rubbish. This was the inspiration behind this unique new concept in wall art produced entirely from plastic bottles. Stretcher Print is made from 100% recycled bottles and can be printed with a personalised image.

Images: Stretcher Print is made from 100% recycled material and can be created from an image of your choice.
Whilst Stretcher Print certainly ticks the sustainability box by reclaiming waste material and thereby diverting it from landfill, Co2nscience also recognised the importance of aesthetics in ecofriendly interior design. After all, a product that is recycled but ends up being thrown away because it is unattractive is really not sustainable at all. Therefore, we invested a great deal of time into pushing the limits of the material and using it to create something completely unique.
Stretcher Print offers almost unlimited design capabilities since it doesn’t require a wooden frame for hanging. Unlike traditional canvas prints, which are usually constrained to square or rectangle shapes, Stretcher Print can be stretched into a whole assortment of shapes and sizes. We are planning to extend our range of Stretcher Prints with the addition of new shapes and introduction of an online photo upload tool that will allow customers to choose their photo
and customize the shape of the print online. A bespoke design service is also available, allowing customers to commission one-of-akind Stretcher Prints. Heading into 2014, we expect to see an increased demand for home décor products made from recycled and reclaimed materials. The challenge is to continue finding unexpected ways to use these materials and continue to push the boundaries to create innovative new designs. co2nscience.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM
30 STORAGE
Storage solutions for modern living Kerry Baulch, Head of Product Management at Häfele UK, discusses the growing trend for clever, modern storage.
W
ith living space at a premium and the economy fostering an ‘improve don’t move’ culture, the need to offer innovative storage solutions, for every part of the home, has never been greater. Adding clever storage solutions and making creative use of space can drastically improve the look and function of the home as well as keeping everything neat and tidy. Kitchen storage The kitchen is more than just a room in the house, it’s the heart of the home and often a main focal point for family activity. With the demand for open-plan kitchen and dining spaces growing, efficient storage is even more important. Utilising wall space and removing items from work-surfaces not only maximises space but also banishes any clutter, making an area appear larger. Storage on show With the growing trend for cooking from scratch and the importance of eating fresh, display baskets have become a popular feature in modern kitchens. Wicker baskets in particular are an attractive means of keeping fresh fruit and vegetables on display while out of the way of everyday cooking activity. Simple aluminium rack solutions are also a neat way of keeping everything at hand and in place, from utensils and spices to tea towels and kitchen rolls. Having essentials on show improves functionality and adds character to the kitchen.

33 STORAGE Modern storage solutions allow for inventive use of space
Pull-out larders are an aesthetic and functional addition to a kitchen
a clever way of transforming an awkward space into an efficient storage area. In addition to maximising access to this tricky area of the kitchen, interior baskets can be customised with various finishes, including glass and wire ensuring a co-ordinated scheme throughout the kitchen. The latest designs can be tailored to fit even the smallest of spaces with sturdy, height adjustable shelves that can also accommodate large or small spaces. Pull-out larders and slim-line cupboards are a beautiful yet incredibly functional addition to the kitchen. A key advantage of modern designs is that custom sizes can be made to fit in between cupboards and run floor-to-ceiling as well as the benefits of adding an assisted ‘push-toopen’ door function so that it glides open automatically at the lightest touch. By fitting various baskets and rails bespoke storage can be created to hold towels, spices, trays and cookware while still maintaining clean lines. Investing in good quality internal fittings will add value to the home as well as convenience for the current owner. Waste and recycling The modern homeowner will also need to think about waste management and recycling - adding waste compactors and segregators to the kitchen not only increases storage capacity, but also helps the environment. Savvy storage throughout the home Clever storage solutions should form an integral part of interior design schemes throughout the home. To give the illusion of a larger living room, increase floor space with a TV lift and conceal the screen in a unit when not in use, or add sliding and pivoting panels and doors to conceal sound systems and electricals. Storage at lower levels is also proving to be an effective way of increasing space in a room as it prevents bulky units protruding into the room. Storage solutions are continuously evolving to offering innovative designs for every requirement. ideasforliving.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

The external fireplace With the growing trend to view the garden as another room in the home, incorporating exterior fires into garden designs not only create an interesting statement but also have the practical benefit of generating heat.
I
s there a better symbol of our cold winters than cosying up beside a roaring fire? There are plenty of interesting garden fire designs in the market that create a statement regardless of the season. Inex presents some of the best sculptural exterior fires that the market has to offer. Whatever the style of the outdoor space, outdoor fireplaces make a great focal point. They are designed to operate in virtually all weather, are durable long-term and proofed against nuisance shut-downs caused by excessive wind, for example. A square, rectangular or even circular firepit is nice to sit around in the increasingly dark winter evenings. Compared to burning wood, gas or bioethanol firepits are
quickly becoming one of the most common options for outdoor fire pits and are more environmentally friendly as they release no smoke. UK Fire specialist Urban Fires spoke to Inex about current garden fireplace trends. They highlighted minimalist ‘widescreen’ fireplaces as the feature expected to prevail into 2014. A noticeable switch from firepits to firetables has taken place this year. A firetable offers the same great look and warmth of real flames, but also delivers the very real convenience of a table space. Many suppliers offer bespoke designs. Cathy Azria’s indoor fire installations have won her acclaim both in this country and overseas. Blurring the distinction between function and art, Cathy has now re-inventied her designs for the
garden. Running on mains gas, they can be designed into a chimney, built into fireproof/frost proof “box” vessels or set on a slab. The opposite page is Cathy’s ‘Loop the Loop’ sculpture which was commissioned for a private London garden. The size, positioning and sculptural forms are designed in conjunction with the client and the steel elements of each piece are left untreated, to develop a beautiful fire tempered rusty patina. As flames lick through them, the sculptural forms begin to glow red hot, creating spectacular effects that are different every time the fire is lit. bd-designs.co.uk urbanfires.co.uk robeys.co.uk «

The forecast is contrast The latest addition to Chelsea’s King’s Road, Nina’s House is a new concept bespoke furniture store. Inex’s Editor, Emily Smith, asked the owner, Nina Bigbie, what furniture she believes will be popular in 2014. “As the owner of a store where natural materials are essential, I’m pleased to say I think the trend of taking nature indoors will continue. However, I believe the specific focus in 2014 will move towards actually merging the tranquility of the rustic with the vibrancy of the urban: Town and Country in one room. Flowers and floral decorations will dominate. “The 2013 focus on artisans and their work will remain important, but I think we’ll see more highly refined and sophisticated craftsmanship and a more contemporary taste. At Nina’s House, the interest in some of our sleek, wooden tables, such as our solid walnut CASTULA by Salih Teskeredzic is on the increase and I think this kind of interest will grow in 2014. “Minimalism will survive and a clutter-free look will still be essential. However, the pure and simple will be

Rough surfaces, stone walls or floors and lots of wood will be mixed with refined materials such as marble, gold, silver and copper. “The colours of 2014: Everyone is INEX-ONLINE.COM

Africa will be strong in general and the natural neutrals such as sand, stone, mushroom, hay, roots, pebble, birch and driftwood will continue with splashes of green and pale blues. “Finally, I think there will be a focus on low voltage lighting that combine functionality with beauty and atmosphere. Some lights will be more like artworks. The recent Buster & Punch Hooked lights, Donna Bates’ Parlour lights and the

o5. SMEG L30FABE electric fire
Little Greene has scoured the archives of both London and Paris to source its latest heritage wallpaper collection, the aptly named ‘Révolution Papers’. The title of this range refers not to the storming of the Bastille in 1789, but to the groundbreaking advances in the production and distribution of wallpapers in the ensuing industrial period. ‘Révolution Papers’ comprises seven designs that typify the period: traditional damask and delicate toile patterns, a sophisticated (and sometimes surprising) treatment of colour and a beautiful surface quality only achieved by traditional block-printing. littlegreene.com
With signature curves and the distinctive Smeg logo, you can choose between four designer frame colours - red, cream, black and silver. This variation provides you with the versatility to co-ordinate your electric fire with other appliances in an open-plan scheme or feature it as a standalone statement piece. Alternative frame options can be bought to simply replace by hand to suit the occasion. The L30FABE has a unique digital display, which will enable you to modify the temperature, flame intensity and timer and when it’s not in use, the digits fade away for a sleek finish. A compact remote control with manual override has seven heat settings with a convenient thermostat - this way, you can keep running costs to a minimum but still keep warm this winter. Smeg’s brand manager, John Davies, says: “ The L30FABE electric fire not only looks the part with Smeg’s trademark designer finish but it’s a fantastic alternative to our flueless gas fire collection and installation is easy without the constraints of gas supplies and flues to contend with. Simply use a mains socket close to the appliance location.” smeguk.com

The collection also offers a collection of unique ceramic accessories giving the whole range a decidedly modern edge. The choice of colours reinforces UKIYO-E’s visual appeal with a contemporary palette: pale grey, sage green and two types of white: gloss and matt. Combined with their pale oak and brass hardware to get a really luxe look. The name is taken from the Japanese art form known as “pictures of the floating world”. UKIYO-E definitely gives more than a nod to eastern culture. olympiaceramica.it

ROGER OATES Flatweave collection in British Cheviot wool This collection uses a new British Cheviot wool-blend yarn created specially for this edited group of floorcoverings. Cheviot wool has been an inspiration for the spring and strength it brings to the flatweave textiles. Through development in collaboration with English wool merchants and yarn spinners, a thread has been spun which not only provides good spring but also allows clear bright colour to sing through. Designs are woven to work as runners and can be joined by hand to create large scale rugs or wall-to-wall fitted carpets. rogeroates.com
