ighting is one of the most overlooked elements of interior design, yet it is arguably the most important. There is little point designing a beautiful interior if it cannot be appreciated because of inadequate lighting. In the last issue of 2017, we take a look at some gorgeous examples of lighting in a vast spectrum of projects to prove how important this design feature is. Inex takes an in-depth look at how Lucent illuminated a shopping centre in the Middle East on page 42, and discovers how public sculpture project, the Arches of Oman, is not only truly stunning during the day but how the careful placement of a series of submerged lights can provide a very distinct vision at night on page 23. The small French production company newcomer, Bloomboom, unveils its first collection of graphic pop lamps, deliberately going against the trend for brass, wood and marble combinations on page 10. And finally, if you’re not quite feeling festive enough yet, turn to page 19 to take a look at the twinkling lights that adorn Claridge’s Christmas tree this year, designed by creative visionary Karl Lagerfeld. 2017 has seen a number of innovations in interior and exterior design and I’m excited to see what the New Year has to offer, including the much-anticipated relaunch of our website! On behalf of the Inex team, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support over the last year and wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

8 FLOORING
The benefits of using LVT in hotels When specifying flooring for hotels there are, naturally, a number of requirements to consider as the space usually houses not only entrances and restaurants but also bedrooms and connecting areas. The hospitality industry is also a sphere of fast-paced demand where the consumer now looks for quality and design-led interiors. The floor solutions, therefore, need to satisfy multiple practical needs whilst consistently portraying the key messages of the hotel’s identity.
L
uxury vinyl tiles (LVT) are an efficient design solution for hotels combining highquality performance with outstanding design. Some companies have amazing technology now that means this flooring has come on leaps and bounds improving the designs and laying pattern options. The ability to recreate realistic woods and stones INEX-ONLINE.COM
in LVT allows for hotels to create an upmarket feel without committing to huge budgets. The durability of this type of flooring is perfect for a hotel environment as it works well in high traffic areas and doesn’t suffer from staining, cracking or wear in the way some other floor types do. And as many hotels must adhere to recycling and waste targets, using LVT is a great way at keeping wastage to an absolute minimum as you can opt for tiles rather than rolls, which can be more accurate.
Entrances Questions of practicality versus design are best understood when considering the reception or entrance area of hotel. As the first destination for anyone entering the hotel it is important that this makes the right lasting impression. This space needs to convey simply and instantly what the hotel is trying to achieve and its philosophy. It is unsurprising then that the most successful of hotels invest in highquality design in the entrance areas. This is the perfect time to play with colour and eye-catching laying patterns. Depending on the other elements of the room you can experiment with vibrant colour palettes for pared-back furniture or deep, luxurious woods that will perfectly complement and contrast a bright scheme.
9 FLOORING
Looking for flooring with a strong commercial warranty is best for these high footfall environments. It can also be beneficial to consider integrated solutions, where you can seamlessly combine both carpet or entrancespecific flooring. These can be practical solutions to improve the cleanliness of the space or create a zoned area making its key purpose, a waiting area for example, more visually apparent. We have also seen a big increase in the number of bespoke designs being created for focal areas in the hospitality sector, from intricate laying patterns to specific colours and logos. Dedicated in-house sales, design and manufacturing teams at Amtico work on these projects with clients, helping support with CAD drawings, product selection and production in its Coventry factory.
Connecting areas Connecting areas mustn’t be forgotten either. Largely ignored, these areas offer huge design opportunity. Combine materials to create a pattern that has movement within it, this can make a sweeping path design that leads visitors from one area to another. We often work with clients to solves specific challenges – for example, on one project the client wished to recreate the expansive and impressive feel of the original marble corridors of the venue. However, due to material costs and weight restrictions, this would not be possible. LVT provided the ideal solution, giving the ‘feel’ of marble, without being block-coloured or imitating another material. Restaurants Restaurants and bars experience high usage and numerous spillages, so it is key to specify a commercial LVT flooring with high durability. Another benefit is the low-maintenance nature making it easy to clean and maintain. Design and pattern can be again employed well here to highlight the main seating areas for the restaurant. amtico.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

ranslated from the original works of abstract Artist, Sam Glankoff, the rugs stand as works of art in their own right. The Art of Glankoff collection reflects the beauty of the artist’s innovative designs with all of the benefits of using Perennials’ high-quality solution-dyed acrylic yarns. Inspired by Glankoff’s bold brushstrokes, primordial symbols and richly complex surfaces, Perennials has brought the artist’s innovations to the forefront with this new line of luxury performance rugs. INEX-ONLINE.COM
Perennials carefully translated the artist’s contemporary techniques from paper to the loom, capturing subtle blends from Glankoff’s colour charts, and intricate surface details, such as seam lines from the original paper panels. In partnership with the Glankoff estate (SGW), Perennials has interpreted four of Glankoff’s works into 12 Tibetan knot rug patterns. Rather than craft a rug that simply mimics a Glankoff, Perennials and the SGW carefully isolated three sections within a single artwork and translated them into three unique rugs. From graphic to textural, each rug has its own personality and aesthetic. “Sam Glankoff’s unique, unprecedented approach to abstract expressionism certainly earned him a distinct place in the history of modern art,” says Ann Sutherland, President of Perennials and Sutherland, LLC. “We wanted to bring his iconic pieces to our rugs in such a way that
it emulated artwork that would hang on a gallery wall, with the craftsmanship, performance and tradition of luxury that Perennials’ fabrics and rugs are known for. These truly are pieces of art made for modern life.” Each rug in the initial offering comes in a size, shape and colourway approved by the Glankoff Estate. The Art of Glankoff collection is made from Perennials’ 100% solution-dyed acrylic yarns and resist stains, UV light and mildew, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They are

luxurious, soft-to-the-touch and are very easy to maintain and clean. Wendy Snyder, the Director and Archivist of the Sam Glankoff Estate and creative force behind The Sam Glankoff SGW Collections, worked closely with the artist for years, studying his methods, recording their conversations and curating Glankoff’s first solo exhibition. “This collection of hand-knotted luxury performance rugs by Perennials captures Glankoff’s bold brushstrokes, richly layered surfaces and life-affirming abstract language,” said Snyder. “They bring
to life the power, depth and distinctiveness of his works in a way that’s profoundly eloquent. His original artwork and designs have been preserved in a new medium. What an incredible tribute.” Sam Glankoff was born in New York City in 1894. He was invited to exhibit his paintings and woodcuts in the group show at the Whitney Studio Club from 1922 to 1928. For two decades he continued to paint on canvas, yet he found the woodcut medium offered him a greater opportunity to work privately and self-sufficiently. His representational woodcuts of the 1920s and 1930s inspired by German Expressionism, evolved into abstract collage-monotypes and later into large-scale, luminous mono-paintings (19701982) in water-soluble ink and casein. Glankoff dedicated himself to art as an entirely personal means of expression. Throughout his life, he
eschewed public exposure and declined to participate in gallery and museum exhibitions so he was not well-known in his lifetime. Today, his substantial and mature body of work speaks to artists, collectors and art lovers, with a powerful, emotional energy and formal elegance that are resonant and timeless. A new perspective This year’s Claridge’s Christmas tree is designed by Karl Lagerfeld, widely regarded as one of the fashion world’s most influential creative forces.
T
he festive installation is inspired by Lagerfeld’s childhood memories of Christmas, with a series of inverted spruce Christmas trees placed around the hotel lobby. The centrepiece is a 16ft-high inverted
tree with silver gilded roots topped with a multi-faceted mirrored star which reflects rays of magical light across the Art Deco lobby. Reminiscent of a silver stalactite, the tree is hung with traditional silver lametta decorations, silver butter
leather feathers and snowflakes handmade by craftsmen in Germany with tree candles giving a warm, inviting glow. Under the tree sit handsewn white Icelandic sheepskin rugs to reflect a recent snowfall. An inverted candlelit tree takes the place of Claridge’s famous central chandelier to add a touch of Christmas chic. The pure white linen cloths that cover the tables under the various trees are symbolic of a Christmas ritual that Lagerfeld’s mother would perform every year.

ommissioned by Muscat Municipality and realised by Giles’ team in Britain, it is a truly extraordinary work of art, offering unique views from all surrounding approaches. Officially commissioned in late 2015, this public sculpture project has gone from vision to reality. The multi-national team who operated under the leadership of the Commission Director, Julian Glyn-Owen, was primarily British. They also utilised material and skills from Oman as well as from Finland, Germany and Italy, making this a very international project. Starting life in the UK, the sculpture was developed by a trans-national group of 12 companies consisting of design engineers, fabricators and specialists. Constructed of Duplex, the highest grade of stainless steel, it was pre-polished in Birmingham, cut, formed and fabricated in Darwen. It had the final trial assembly in Rotherham before being shipped to Oman. The water and electrical systems hidden beneath the site were designed and tested in the UK and installed in late 2016 in advance of the arrival of the sculpture. Arches sits above a 25m-wide, purpose-built oval pool and reaches 12m in height. Its design is formed of two entwined tusks which curve around one another, with a flowing curtain of water arcing and falling between them. Giles Rayner, the sculpture’s creator, is an established figure in the world of water sculpture. His work can be found in locations in North America and Europe in his imaginative and highly original style. Usually large in scale, Giles’ work uses copper, stainless steel and bronze, giving a strong energy and sense of intrigue to his aesthetically beautiful designs. As with all his work, Giles created this design as a response to, and sympathetic with, its surroundings.

“The abstract sculpture was influenced by the arch shape and by the Royal Opera House itself,” explained Giles. “Movement is provided by the variable water jets and also by its sinuous curves which cause it to appear to rotate as you pass around it. It is the focal point of the beautifully landscaped gardens in which it sits. “It is stunning during the day but then provides a very distinct vision at night through the careful placement of a series of submerged lights in the pool beneath.” Work on the sculpture required thousands of hours and coordination with civil engineers in Oman to ensure its safe delivery to site in Muscat for assembly during June 2017. Julian Glyn-Owen directed the final assembly outside the Royal Opera House. This took 22 days and continued without pause through the Holy month of Ramadan and into Eid. Across the project, teams from both Oman and the UK have brought specialist skills to complete the work, including the road and sea transport of the sculpture from Rotherham to Southampton to Muscat. This required over 10 trucks across three locations, before four cranes were used to assemble and lift the sculpture into its final position. Work on the finer details of the piece including the water pumps, hosing, lighting and infrastructure needed to allow the sculpture to come to life are now complete. “Its final appearance is both imposing and elegant, with its geometric shape enhanced by flowing water from over 60 nozzles throughout the sculpture,” said Julian Glyn-Owen. Surrounded by the beautifully designed gardens and flanked by the Royal Opera House, the Arches of Oman represents a great feat of teamwork and engineering. The project has reached its successful conclusion; to realise a grand vision in a unique location for all of Muscat’s visitors to enjoy. archesoman.com «

Blurring the boundaries between bedroom and bathing space C.P. Hart Designer Emma Scott talks to Inex about a project where a large freestanding bath overlooking a window was the catalyst for the whole project.
A
fter studying for an interior design degree at Lincoln University and working for a bespoke furniture company for a year, Emma Scott finally moved to C.P. Hart almost 10 years ago and has worked as a Bathroom Designer in Manchester for pretty much all of her design career. “I knew I wanted to work in design since high school,” explains Emma. “Art, graphics and design were my favourite subjects and I was a huge ‘Changing Rooms’ fan. As I got a little older I realised it was spatial planning and interior architecture I really enjoyed and bathroom design fits perfectly with this. “For this project, the client wanted an opulent, glamorous master en-suite that would flow through from the open-plan bedroom/ dressing area. A double shower, comfortable bath and storage with luxurious touches throughout were also key. Ideally, the client wanted a chandelier over the bath.” Emma continues: “The bath was the first focus. The room has a gorgeous view from the floor-to-ceiling window so we wanted to make the most of this. Rather than simply fit a freestanding bath, we chose the Bania bath which feels more like a piece of furniture with plenty of counter space to stand a glass of wine and a good book. The hidden drop-down storage in the side also means products can be neatly hidden away. As the ceiling was too low to accommodate a chandelier, we used the Wanders crystal shower heads in the double shower as a compromise which really added the wow factor to the space. INEX-ONLINE.COM
“By incorporating detail such as the crystal handles on the taps and the large-format porcelain marbleeffect tiles, the overall look is very elegant without being ostentatious and is a beautiful space in which to relax. The room is quite large so creating features within the bath and shower areas means the space isn’t overwhelming or sparse and is actually a very inviting sanctuary. A television at the end of the bath, underfloor heating and an electric blind all add little levels of luxury too. “The soft grey and white scheme mixed with the warm wood-effect porcelain floor tiles tie the bedroom, dressing room and bathroom together and give them continuity. The window dressing and fabric ottoman bring a softer feel to what can sometimes be quite a clinical room. “Most of the products are Italian and there is a lovely mix of finishes in the room which I think is important when working with such a neutral colour scheme. The matt bath is offset by the polished brassware and glossy furniture whilst the floor looks quite chalky, adding layers of interest to the palette. We used Karol for the basin/storage and bath, Gessi, Joerger and Bisazza Bagno for the brassware and radiators by Bisque. The shower screen was bespoke, the wetroom floor was by CCL and the tiles were from Casa Ceramica. The window treatments and all lighting is Lutron controlled. We also had the shadow gap on the bath and basin changed from standard white to a soft grey to pick up the veining in the wall tiles.” cphart.co.uk «

30 GARDEN
How to create a garden with year-round interest The UK may not have a Mediterranean climate, but homeowners can still enjoy their garden from spring to winter. All the garden needs is ‘good bones’ – wellthought-out hardscaping – and good seasonal planting.
B
y hardscaping , we mean paths, paving, gravel, walls, fencing, benches, arbours, pergolas – these could be made from concrete, brick, stone, wood or metal, just make sure that the style and palette work with the style and decoration of the house in question. However, don’t be tempted to introduce too many elements or materials as it will look crowded and fussy. It is important to link the inside with the outside, particularly in an urban environment where the kitchen or family room invariably leads straight into the outside space nowadays. Also bear in mind that town gardens are often in constant view, which means the detailing has to be perfect. Opt for high-quality materials and high-spec appliances like in-built seating and BBQs for a luxurious finish. Pay attention to the size of the paving and the combination of surfaces, textures, finishes and colours – because the concrete, stone, paints
INEX-ONLINE.COM
and render all need to work together. Details and edging need to be precise and accurate. Simplicity is key for an elegant-looking garden. It is also worth considering the inclusion of a fire pit, fire bowl or fireplace into a design project. They work really well because they extend the life of the garden, making it a warmer and more sociable place to relax and entertain friends and family late into the evening, and not just in the summer. Another option is the use of electric heat strips which can be attached to arbour plinths, discreetly, out of view.

32 GARDEN
Viewing the garden as an outdoor room means there are plenty of other ideas to consider: outdoor kitchens, bars, hot showers, jacuzzis, studio/workshops, drum rooms and even ‘dancefloor’ terraces. A sculpture focal piece will also look good all year round. Good-quality, discreet garden lighting is a really important factor when designing a garden with year-round interest as it looks wonderful but it also creates additional living space, particularly in town gardens, where today’s lifestyles mean that, for six months of the year, the garden is often only seen at night. But, do not even attempt to install exterior lighting without expert advice – it is very difficult to install correctly and has to be certified, like all household lighting. A subtle combination of spots, up- and downlighters, ‘moonlighting’ and step and path lights gives a totally different view of the garden, and makes the outdoor space usable throughout the year, and provides a fun environment to be enjoyed even in the winter. Charlotte Rowe Garden Design reinterprets classical formal design and makes it contemporary, with strong architecturalstyle garden designs, and structural planting, complemented by modern outdoor furniture and lighting. Our planting style is soft, luxuriant to soften the lines. Use a simple palette of colours for planting which should have some structure, but not too wide a selection of plants. Repetition and rhythm is the key particularly in small gardens as, if the planting palette is too varied, it looks fussy and fiddly. Ideally, the colours should complement the house decor. Less is more in design and layout terms but in small gardens we like to almost ‘over-plant’ the beds so that the planting contrasts well with our pared-back and architectural hard landscaping. ‘Green architecture’ – structural evergreen shrubs, such as clipped Buxus or Taxus balls and low hedging, not only set a formal mood, but will also give a garden yearround interest. Combine this with evergreen grasses and perennials to create a range of texture. Also plant bulbs which will flower in early spring and summer to get a continuous display of colour and variety. charlotterowe.com «

he scope involved the complete removal of all existing internal elements of the fivestorey Georgian terrace house in Pimlico, leaving a six-sided internal volume. Awardwinning architecture practise, ama, then re-imagined the spaces within to deliver a new home environment with transparency and connection, materiality and texture, light and shadow, excitement and tranquillity. A restrained palette of industrial materials – raw concrete and steel, combine with refined glass, timber and carefully detailed plasterwork to create a relaxed but crisp interior. To solve the issue of a dark and unwelcoming basement level so common in this building type, a ground floor made up entirely of pavement lights was introduced, common but unappreciated on every London commercial street – repurposed here to allow natural light and activity to connect the first two levels of the building. From the basement level, a handmade steel staircase connects to the ground floor and then works its way up to the first floor, at which point the solid steel plates transform into a perforated metal spine which cuts right through the building to the top floor. This use of the perforations throughout the house help to intensify the light through various aperture dimensions. andymartinarchitecture.com INEX-ONLINE.COM

The Robinsons department store is positioned over three floors around a main central day-lit atrium and also a smaller secondary day-lit atrium. Gary continues: “With many distinct departments, each with their own character and unique feature elements, lighting played a key role in creating the correct ambience and display lighting balance for each area, and with further enhancement of the interior design, provide a visually interesting journey through the store for the customer.” Lucent’s main source of lighting used was the Twin & Triple Gimbal Midi Trimless fixtures with its LED70 14° module. Michael Dunk, Managing Director of Lucent Lighting, discussed the lighting used within the Robinsons project: “Our ProSpex Midi Gimbal fixtures gave the client full flexibility with its dual-axis tilt and adjustment for illumination in all directions. As standard, these fixtures are supplied with anti-glare snoots to ensure visual comfort for INEX-ONLINE.COM
the customer. The majority of the Midi Gimbal fixtures were specified using our 14° LED70 module which delivered an impressive punch with 29,000 Candela’s of intensity for maximum effect.” A key part of the overall design was the quality of the lighting scheme both for ambient and display lighting purposes. Over 100 different lighting details were developed for the display furniture lighting across the whole store. The scope of the lighting commission also included external facade lighting and the general approach was to wash the facades and green living walls with discreet but powerful LED fixtures, or integrate concealed luminaires into the facade detailing. The Atlantis Palm Dubai, The Armani Hotel Dubai and most recently completed Jumeirah Al Naseem Hotel are a few hotels of note in the Middle East within Lucent’s international portfolio. lucentlighting.com «

52 FABRIC
Fabric that tells a story Epitomising the decadent spirit of the 1920s, Zoffany launches ‘The Muse’ for SS18.
E
ncapsulating the sophistication and decadence of this exuberant era, The Muse combines modernist style with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. According to Peter Gomez, Head of Design for Zoffany: “The Muse collection represents Zoffany at its most contemporary, telling the story of an imaginary muse and the art she inspired – and many of the designs are named after real-life artists’ muses. Everything the muse touches turns to gold and captures the artist’s imagination. “It was created with refined extravagance at its heart and a sense of adventure and decadence running through its designs. I imagined how the collection would set the mood for the Zoffany home – I wanted to translate its confidence and allure and mix it with hotel chic, INEX-ONLINE.COM
adding femininity and freedom of expression through its organic natural shapes and figurative lines.” The Muse channels cosmopolitan hotel luxe and symbolises elegance and prestige. The striking designs, opulent in both colour and texture, are bold and captivating, beguiling and sensual. The colours are integral to the overall look and cohesion of The Muse – powerful and luxurious, they build on previous collections through the Alchemy of Colour – a palette of colours distilled down to
their original ‘essence’ and based on jewel-like colours found within the Zoffany archive. Exquisite, rich and diverse, the colours link all the recent collections together to create a wonderfully layered interior scheme. The complete collection encompasses five complementary books: The Muse Fabrics, The Muse Wallcoverings, Oblique Wallpapers, Conway Velvets and Brooks. stylelibrarycontract.com «
